“Come in, it’s open!” Emily Prentiss yelled out over her music blasting out of the laptop on her desk. She was listening to her pregame playlist, which was chock full of throwbacks, middle-school jams and of course, The Killers to keep things interesting.

Derek Morgan pushed open her dorm room door and waltzed in. He had a pair of light blue jeans on, held up by a brown belt, with a white t-shirt on top. He jumped on top of Emily’s slightly-too-high bed, and bounced as he grinned at her. Derek was many things, shy was definitely not one of them.

“You look hot,” Emily said, with as much sarcasm as she could manage, looking him up and down. She could tell he dressed up.

“You know it, princess.”

Rifling through his backpack, he grinned as he pulled out two blue college-branded metal water bottles, filled with what was probably not water at all.

“I made us sangria!”

Emily laughed, then spun back around in her desk chair. She still needed to finish her makeup. She had her foundation and eyebrows done, but she needed to focus as she applied her eyeliner.

“Did you just mix some juice into the wine?” She asked, taking the bottle from him, having a sip of the fruity liquid.

“Yup! There’s going to be a keg there, but I wanted to give us options.”

Emily laughed before focusing on her mascara wand gliding across her lower eyelashes, trying to finish up so they could start preing for the party. She wasn’t quite dressed yet either, still wearing her class jeans and not her going out jeans (there was an important distinction between these that mostly involved whether or not she could wear them with a belt.) Morgan was about five minutes earlier than she expected. Moreover, the boy had only sprung the invitation to the party during their lab that afternoon.

As much as she hated to admit it, Derek was basically 90% of Emily’s non-academic social life, the second year boy already very well connected due to his football scholarship, letting him in on all of the good parties. Unfortunately that also meant for Emily that he would spring themed parties like anything but clothes, or no cups allowed on her with absolutely no heads up most weekends.

Emily will not wear a tote bag as a skirt again if she can help it.

Despite the excessive drinking and mixed bag of party attendees, Emily genuinely enjoyed the boy’s company. Anyways, he was the best beer-pong partner that she’s ever had.

“Can I hop on aux?” He asked, leaning over her computer before she could even protest.

“Sure,” she replied, knowing he was already on his own Spotify account and putting on his playlist titled ‘FOR THE BOYS and emily’ that he found hilarious. She knew she could get him to sing along to the Mamma Mia! (2008) soundtrack once he was a few shots in, but for now she resigned herself to wordless EDM.

He sat on her desk, bobbing his head along to the beat.

Emily reached into the bottom drawer of her desk and pulled out a smallish bottle of vodka and two shot glasses, with their college’s crest etched into the glass. For a school that denounced drinking-culture, they had a shocking amount of merch for sale that encouraged it.

She filled each to the line, and slid one towards her friend.

“Bottoms up,” she said, as they cheersed the foul tasting liquid. Morgan grinned and winked at her before shooting it back with the confidence that only a nineteen year old could have.

Vodka still made her queasy, but being underage meant that the college students would take what they could get. Morgan’s senior friends would boot alcohol for them for an extra five bucks, but only every few weeks.

The one thing about the states that Emily still couldn’t wrap her head around was the backwards alcohol policy. Almost everywhere else on earth she would already be legally drinking. Hell, when she was 16 she was passed out in a ditch in rural England, drunk off her ass on legally acquired beer. Even now, if they drove north of the border, Emily could be off to the bars, no questions asked. America was absurd.

“How was the rest of your day?” Emily asked him as she stood up, digging through her dirty laundry to find her other pair of jeans. She tossed aside her fuzzy pjs, a bra and an assortment of band tees but her jeans must’ve been at the bottom. She needed to do laundry but was ripe out of quarters.

“Eh,” he made a face, “I had to finish up that quiz for psych, but honestly I just needed to catch up on some readings. I had like fifty pages of a badly scanned book from like a hundred years ago to annotate.”

“Reading? In this economy?” Emily snarked at him, still rooting through the bin. She knew her blue jeans were here somewhere.

“Well I know you can’t read,” he replied in a haughty tone, “doesn’t mean the rest of us have to remain unenlightened!”

“Ha-ha.”

There they were, right at the bottom of the bin. She changed right then, with Morgan politely averting his eyes, despite the fact that both have seen just about everything in the year or so that they’ve been acquainted.

No, they didn’t hook up or anything, it wasn’t like that.

It was the strange phenomenon that only could happen in college where you get really close really fast. Emily’s RA had explained it to their first-year floor, likening it to soldiers in the war (Emily wasn’t sure if the metaphor was kosher, but it was apt.). Young adults first starting out in the world, free from their family supervision and previous lives, cling on to those around them for stability. The RA explained this as in a cautionary tale, explaining that this can lead to high emotions, to fights, and… a bit more.

This talk led into their floor-cest talk, which was apparently required in every co-ed dorm at their school. Emily was the first to point out the heteronormativity in that policy. Floor-cest, for the uninitiated, was the concept of hooking up with someone on your floor in the dorm. It was formally discouraged by residence life staff. It was easy to have meaningless sex, harder when you have sex with someone you live down the hall from. Things could get messy.

Emily and Derek got this talk on move in day, both sitting cross-legged on the floor of their common room as their RA, a bubbly girl named Carol, explained the fundamentals of dorm life. Emily has been dropped off by her mother’s driver, who helped her unload her things.

Emily was still reeling from being surrounded by happy families, of crying parents and bitter that her mother was too busy to even send her own daughter off to school. Not that Emily wanted her there or anything, but the gesture would have been nice.

She remembered the startling moment when Derek walked straight into her room and offered his hand, introducing himself to his new neighbour.

They shared a wall, the co-ed bathroom down the hall, and most of their free time for their first year at college.

He had assumed that the driver, Paul who was one of Emily’s favourites out of her mother’s staff, was Emily’s father, which started things off on an awkward note. Soon she was swept up in a whirlwind of his family: his mom and sisters who insisted that Emily pose for photos of Derek and ‘his new dorm friend.’

A year later, Emily and Morgan were basically siblings. Emily didn’t actually have any siblings, but after going to Chicago for thanksgiving with the Morgan family, she was pretty sure she had officially been adopted.

Last year, they had a much nicer dorm, one of the newer ones with big windows and nice common spaces. This year they were both living in the oldest residence, a beautiful red brick building, covered with ivy, but the inside was all painted this gross beige, and the paint would chip off whenever Emily tried to hang her posters. There was also no air conditioning, the showers didn’t get too hot and the kitchen smelt like eggs. It was definitely a downgrade, but at least Morgan was on the same floor as her again.

Morgan had lucked out and gotten a corner room with tons of windows, and Emily was right next to the bathroom and could hear when anyone flushed.

After donning the jeans and a black tank top, Emily grabbed her leather jacket and they were ready to go.

“Another shot?” Derek asked, grinning at her mischievously.

“Of course,” Emily said. “Where are we even going anyways?”

“Well, you remember David, the TA from our psych lab? His housemates are throwing a party in their backyard. I heard there was going to be a DJ!”

“David Rossi?” Emily said incredulously, “How did you swing an invite to that?”

“I can’t reveal all of my secrets, you know that pretty lady.”

Emily scoffed. It was probably through their mutual friend Aaron Hotchner, who despite not being much of a partier, was very in the loop about the happenings on campus.

“Did you invite you know who?” Derek asked, a bit too casually as Emily locked her door.

Emily refused to bite.

“She definitely has better things to do than hang out with the likes of us.”

“I’m a criminology major,” Emily repeated, the exasperation in her voice palatable.

The boy, who was on the rugby team as she already learned, had asked her what her major was. He misheard her and began asking her how she likes studying biology.

The music was loud and the boy was clearly wasted off his ass. She was pretty sure she saw him do a keg stand in the kitchen earlier.

Emily took another sip of her drink, keeping it close to her chest. She looked around. They were only five minutes off campus at a decent-sized student house. The room was close to being at capacity, the old home creaking under the weight of dozens of students crammed into the living room. Music blared on a strangely impressive speaker system. The party was at its peak in the backyard, and was probably only an hour from being shut down by the cops if it got much louder.

Emily had carefully positioned herself next to the open window, enjoying the slight breeze as the body heat was making the old house steamy with humidity. This also happened to be the location of the bong, but she accepted the trade-off.

Derek was currently playing king’s cup, a game Emily refuses to play, since last time she got roped into it she lost miserably. She was forced to drink the king’s cup: a mixture of shitty beer, whiskey, cider wine and whole cream from the fridge, as she had been a bit too slow with bouncing the ball into the red solo cup. Derek held her hair back as she puked off the porch that night.

Never again.

Emily squinted as a few people she recognized walked into the room. It was only a month into classes, so she really hadn’t had the opportunity to get to know the new random assortment of people in her building, lectures and in her general orbit but she was pretty sure she was starting to recognize some faces.

Entering the party was the blonde from the end of the hallway who always complimented Emily on her outfits when she passed and had the most colourfully decorated dorm in the entire building. ‘Penelope G.’ read her name tag pinned to her door in their RA’s loopy handwriting.

Next to her was a younger boy that she had seen in the cafeteria with Penelope before, and while Emily wasn’t that good at identifying ages, he definitely looked a bit too young to be at college. He was tall, skinny and had a mop of unruly brown hair. He was also wearing a sweater to a house party, which was a major beginners mistake. He looked around nervously.

A few seconds later, the door closed, only dumping an assortment of other boys into the already packed house.

Emily let out a breath she didn’t know she held, as she found herself hoping that Garcia’s other friend might have been joining her that night.

Derek had teased her already about the girl across the hall. Jennifer Jareau. “My friends call me JJ,” she had said. Second year varsity soccer player and communications major. The girl Derek was convinced that Emily had a crush on.

JJ was the kind of girl who propped her door open during orientation week and always waved at Emily when she walked down the hall.

She did not have a crush. She barely knew anything about her besides that she was blonde, athletic and was always smiling. Both had been so busy since school had started, and seemed to have completely opposite schedules that they hadn’t really gotten to really connect.

Whenever Emily was coming back to their floor, JJ always seemed to be leaving. And vice versa. Somehow they were on exact opposite schedules. Probably since JJ was a varsity soccer player with early morning practise, and Emily was a bit of a night owl (that was a polite way of saying insomniac procrastinator perfectionist.)

She seemed to hang out with Garcia around residence, Emily having spotted the two getting coffee or studying in the library together occasionally, hence Emily’s hopes that Garcia may have JJ in tow that evening.

JJ was also definitely, one hundred percent, completely straight. Fairy lights and Polaroid pictures on her walls straight. She even had a high school sweetheart that might survive the turkey dumping season. Emily didn’t know his name but JJ said the key word early on in the year: boyfriend.

Emily turned back to the boy in front of her, who was describing, in detail, how the stock market worked, without realizing that Emily was not paying attention at all.

He was quite conventionally attractive, with mussed curly hair and broad shoulders. He obviously was interested in her—or rather interested in talking at her and potentially sleeping with her—that despite herself, Emily decided to slot him into her roster for that evening.

Emily considered herself a reluctant bisexual. Women could make her heart skip a beat just by looking in her direction, and men could get it when the situation was right and she didn’t have any other options. The second half of this pleased her mother to no end, as when young fourteen year old Emily Prentiss had decided to come out to her mother—at one of their rare dinners together—she watched her mother grit her teeth and tell her to keep that to herself. Her mother had eventually accepted this part of her daughter’s life, but only under the assumption that Emily would eventually end up with a man, and keep the rest to herself.

Emily looked around the room and wondered if she was going to have any other options that evening besides the very talkative boy.

Excusing herself from the company of…Matthew, she thinks was his name, she tries to find Derek, who had disappeared into the kitchen. Emily weaved through the crowd, steering past a couple making out in the corner.

She turned the corner and found Derek filling his cup with more beer from the keg. He grinned up at her and did the same for her.

“I hate beer,” Emily said to him, grimacing at the scratchy taste of the fermented barley in her red solo cup.

“Suck it up buttercup, you’re in college. You also complained about the juice from earlier.”

“Yeah well, watering down eleven percent wine is as bad as this five percent crap.”

“It did taste a lot better,” he agreed. “Who was that guy?”

Emily rolled her eyes.

“Matthew attempted to explain macroeconomics to me.”

“Oh god, is that what men are like out there?” He asked. “Guess you’re stuck with me tonight.”

“Lucky me.”

“Pong?” He asked, gesturing towards the row of tables set up in the backyard, through the open door and passed the crowd milling about near the speakers. The game seemed to be wrapping up, as the two teams shook hands and reset the cups to their original positions.

“Always.”

They found their spot at one of the tables across from their new opponents: Penelope and her very young looking friend.

“Penelope Garcia?” Derek grinned, recognizing the girl from their floor and walking up to her for a hug. Their rooms were facing each other, and they had apparently gotten the chance to get to know each other.

She grinned and hugged him, clearly a lot more sober than him having only arrived minutes earlier. There seemed to be a lot of hugging at house parties, Emily discovered when she moved to America, acquaintances became close friends once alcohol was involved.

She had bright pink glasses and a matching dress, with bright artfully done make-up highlighting her large smile. Emily knew that she was a CompSci major and had loaded her dorm room desk with monitors and the largest computer set-up that Emily had seen in her life.

“Derek, my love,” Penelope replied, gushing over Emily’s friend in an unexpected, but not unsurprising way. “Fancy meeting you here! And Emily! Have you two met my fine young friend here, Spencer?”

She gestured to the boy, who waved awkwardly.

“Hi, I’m Spencer Reid,” he said.

“He’s like a boy-genius or something. He already has a degree in mathematics and he’s currently working on his second degree in engineering. Isn’t that très cool? We met at the club fair last week.”

“I’m double majoring in philosophy,” he added.

“How old are you kid?” Morgan asked him, quick to the punch.

“Uh- sixteen?” Spencer seemed to ask, shrinking into himself a bit. “I skipped a couple of grades.”

He had a pair of glasses perched on his nose, a brown sweater with a white shirt collar poking through and had tucked his brown hair behind his ears. He was still taller than Penelope, but the smattering of acne and wide eyes made it clear that he was very much a kid.

“More than a couple!” Morgan exclaimed.

He shrugged.

“Are you in intro to logic with Williams?” Emily asked, realizing that she had recognized him from somewhere.

“Yes, I am. Though I find his repeated chess metaphors a touch reductive.”

“You’re right about that. Like, we get it Willy, you play chess. Big whoop,” Emily said, then introduced herself.

He smiled at her, slightly less awkwardly this time but with a touch more confusion.

“And this is Derek Morgan,” Penelope piped in, “the most gorgeous football player I know.”

“Do you know any other football players?” Spencer asked.

“Now you hush!” She admonished him. “We have a game to play.”

“Do you two have something to drink?” Derek asked them, moving back towards their side of the long fold-up table, which was crudely painted in their schools colours.

Emily took a sip of her beer, wondering if the boy should be drinking.

Penelope babbled about how it was Spencer’s first college party, and how she was so excited that it was this one because look at the pretty string lights decorating the backyard and the fact that there was a keg, like in the movies.

Smiling at her new neighbour, Emily thought that this might also be Penelope's first college party.

Derek returned with a cup of water for Spencer, and some beer for Penelope. Spencer seemed relieved at the gesture, smiling as he took a sip. Emily marvelled at her friend's kindness, despite what anyone said about drinking culture on campuses either way, it was tough to attend a party and not drink, putting his drink in a matching red cup gave him the appearance of participation.

“Do we all know the rules?” Derek asked.

“The question you should ask,” Emily said, “Is if they’re willing to play by your rules.”

Emily had discovered that this game, depending on the people you were playing with, had radically different rules. While the premise of the game remained the same: there were six cups on each side of the table, into which you threw ping pong balls and whenever you got a ball in a cup, that cup was then taken out of the picture until there were no cups left. Depending on who you were playing with, the cups were filled with water or beer (Emily hated when they had beer in them, it make things sticky and it was very unsanitary), there were specific rules to what defined an airball, when one could get balls back, when you could call island and what was a permissible trick shot.

“Ha ha Prentiss,” Derek said to her, rolling the ping pong ball in his hands. “I wanted to know if they had played before.”

“Oh I’ve played before,” Penelope said, “and I am unbeatable.”

She waggled her fingers in a gesture that implied magic was involved.

“It’s simple physics,” Spencer added, “I’ve memorized the rules and common approaches. We’ll be more than fine. ”

“Ok pretty boy, let’s see what you’ve got. Eye to eye?”

Looking into each other’s eyes, rather than at their targets, the two boys aimed at the cups, with only Reid’s making it in.

“What the fuck Morgan,” Emily exclaimed as Penelope and Spencer whooped, “what even was that throw?”

With the other team having won the privilege of starting first, Emily was forced to toss her ball towards Penelope, who took it with a grin.

She threw first, missing the table entirely.

“Air ball!” Derek announced, leaping forward and waving his hands in front of the cups on their side, the rules granting him the ability to defend their territory.

Spencer frowned, apparently perturbed by this turn of events. He stuck out his tongue, aimed, and launched the ball, hitting Morgan right in the chest. The ball bounced off of it and fell straight down into the cup.

Derek’s draw dropped. Spencer and Penelope whooped in excitement.

“Derek, how did you lose us that cup?” Emily whined, pulling one of their cups to the side. One point to Spencer.

Derek, who had something to prove, lined up his shot. He gazed at his targets with the focus of a sniper, dunked the ball into one of their cups, dousing it with water, and rolled it in his hands, giving it a bit more weight. He aimed and fired off a quick shot into the centre-left cup. It spun around in the cup, floating above the water, but fell in. If the other team were crafty, they would have blown into the cup and Derek would have lost the point, but Emily sighed in relief when she realized that despite their first point, they didn’t know the rules well enough to beat the current reigning beer champs.

It was Emily’s turn. She took a gulp of her beer—she would always swear she was better when she was drunk because she didn’t think too hard about it—and threw. It neatly fell into the back right cup, scoring them two points for that round.

“Balls back!” Derek roared in delight.

Penelope tossed them, and the game continued.

They sunk one more shot on their turn. 3-1.

Penelope got another cup, Spencer missed. 3-2.

Derek’s ball bounced out, Emily sank hers. 4-2.

Only minutes later, after playing at breakneck speed, there were three cups left on the table and Derek and Emily were quite drunk, with Penelope not far behind. Reid, still very sober, was matching the duo with intense concentration.

It was his throw, with two cups left until his victory. He shots carefully, sinking it without a splash.

Derek and Emily had one cup to go. He went first, sending one barreling towards the cup. It hit the rim and instead of going in, it bounced towards Emily, who leaped forward and grabbed it before it fell off the table.

“Trick shot!” She yelled. Derek could try again, but only if he does it in an inventive way. At the frat house they spent a lot of time in first year, the only acceptable trick shot (under this house’s rules) was bouncing the ball off a poster of Obama. This time, Derek takes an empty cup, puts the ball in, and uses the cup to aim.

Somehow, it went in.

They leap into the air, yelling with delight. But they hadn’t won yet. The other team still had a redemption shot.

“How ya feeling kid?” Derek taunted, “Wanna give up now, save yourself the embarrassment?”

“Not a chance.”

He squinted at the table, lining up his shot with precision. With his left hand he licked his finger, sticking it up in the air like golfers do to measure the wind. Emily wasn't sure if this was a joke, something to psych Derek out, or something the boy was genuinely able to do. He frowned, seeming to ponder the information.

He aimed. He tossed it. He sunk the redemption shot.

They were in overtime.

“You can do it princess,” Derek told her, watching her with utmost intensity. Emily adjusted her stance, chugging back the last of that glass of beer, feeling the alcohol with greater focus than before.

She glanced around at the other team, but out of the corner of her eye she caught a familiar face looking at her: Jennifer Jareau from residence. Her not crush.

She was looking at her. Watching her play.

A swell of nervousness flooded up through her lungs, and she forced it out by huffing a breath.

She needed another drink. Moreover, she needed to focus.

Emily threw it. If it made it in, then they won. If she missed, Spencer and Garcia had another shot at redemption. They couldn’t lose this, not now, not in front of… uh, everyone. She was definitely not thinking about JJ in this situation. That would be something a frat boy thought about. She didn’t want to win beer pong to impress some girl, she wanted to win because she had pride.

The ball sailed through the air, Emily held her breath. It caught the lip of the cup, teetered. A splash announced that they had won.

Thank god.

With a whoop, realizing what they had done, Emily and Derek roared with joy, jumping into each other and hugging in their celebration. A few onlookers clapped, noticing how close the game had been.

They pulled apart and reached out their hands to their opponents.

“Great game,” Emily said, shaking Spencer's hand, “Really.”

He grinned despite his loss.

“Honestly I understand the principles, it’s simple parabolas and high-school level physics,” he frowned, “Unfortunately, I need to work on translating those parabolas into the real world.”

“We’ll work on it Spence,” Garcia grinned, shaking Emily’s hand while smiling at her younger friend.

Emily realized that in their celebration, Derek had spilled quite a bit of beer onto Emily’s sleeve and down the side of her shirt and it was currently dripping onto her boots. Emily sighed, handing her friend her cup.

“I’ve got beer all over me,” Emily sighed, “Get me a refill? I’m going to try to find a bathroom.”

Derek nodded and turned back to their new friends, chatting about how impressed he was with their game.

Emily felt a bit sticky, feeling the beer coat her bare arm. Walking back into the house, she glanced at the kitchen sink trying to see if there was any paper towel or something there, but no luck. The sink was full of dishes, the counters covered in assorted empties and cups, without a dishcloth in sight. Not wanting to rifle through their drawers, she made her way towards the staircase.

There was a couple making out on the staircase, which was not something Emily would do herself. It seemed a bit precarious since alcohol was involved, but, to each their own, she thought. Emily opened a couple of the doors upstairs before discovering one of the most disgusting washrooms she’d ever seen.

There was only one thing in the shower: dawn dish soap. The boys who lived here must use that for their bodies. Emily shuddered. On the sink were some toothbrushes, razors and some floss, but for some reason, no soap. Emily found a roll of toilet paper on the floor (ew), and wadded it up to try to reduce the wet spot on her side and hopefully from smelling like a brewery when she returned to residence.

For a moment, Emily found herself gazing at herself in the mirror, feeling hazy and a bit unsteady. She checked her make-up, noting that her dark red lipstick was holding up, but her mascara had smudged under her eyes giving her more of a goth vibe than the alt look she typically went for.

Emily sat down on the tub, patting the toilet paper against her wet clothing, feeling very drunk now that she was seated. Dammit Morgan, couldn’t he have spilled his beer on himself instead of her nice shirt?

The thud of the music was muffled, but there was a ringing in her ears that made everything feel very quiet. That was until there was a thundering of footsteps and the sound of a girl announcing: “I’m going to vom, right now.”

Emily sat, jaw dropped, as a red headed girl threw open the bathroom door, kneeled down on the floor next to the toilet, and relieved herself from the contents of her stomach without so much as a knock. The girl coughed into the bowl, yacking up what was probably way too much beer for the poor tiny girl.

“Oh my gosh,” said another voice, at the door, “I’m so sorry. We didn’t realize there was someone here! ”

Emily looked up, realizing the voice came from no other than Jennifer Jareau.

“JJ!” Emily said, not really knowing what else to do with the girl heaving at her feet.

“You ok?” JJ kneeled down next to her friend, carefully pulling her friend’s long hair back, tugging a hair tie off her own wrist and collecting it so that it didn’t get anything on it.

Emily felt stupid sitting on the tub, not helping anything. She tossed the rest of the toilet paper in the garbage, placing the half-empty roll on the edge of the tub.

“Can I get her some water?” Emily asked, “To rinse her mouth?”

JJ looked up at her and nodded. Emily felt herself blushing slightly as she turned away. Who let one girl’s eyes be so big, and so blue. It was rude.

She returned a minute later having had to rinse her own beer cup out in the gross kitchen sink to make sure that she wasn’t accidentally giving this girl some random person's sketchy cup.

Emily remembered that earlier Derek said that it was a varsity party, so it did make sense that JJ was also in attendance. The whole team probably was. The other girl looked like a soccer player, she had that vibe.

Emily handed the cup to JJ, who gave her a grateful smile. Emily felt their fingers touch for a moment, before JJ turned to attend to her friend.

She tried to get her to take a sip, and Emily took the moment to look JJ up and down, taking in her light blue skinny jeans, black tank and high heeled boots. She was basically wearing the uniform of a straight white girl at a houseparty. Not to say Emily wasn’t also basically wearing the same outfit, pairing the jeans with combat boots and attempting to set herself apart with her black nail polish and eyeliner that her mother once called ‘a lot.’

In contrast to Emily’s fairly undefined thin body, she took note of the strong looking shoulders that flexed as JJ kneeled down on the floor. She was definitely an athlete. Emily looked away, checking her phone, feeling suddenly embarrassed for looking at the girl.

‘Girl puknigh up hre’ Emily typed, ‘Got her waterr’

Emily blinked at her typos, pressing the red underlined words, hoping her phone would correct them for her. She wasn’t that drunk.

The two girls were talking quietly, and Emily decided to take her leave, but before she could the red-head beat her to the punch deciding that she wanted to puke in peace.

“Leave me aloooooonnne Jennifer,” she wined. “Get out, I don’t want any more fucking water.”

JJ pulled back, making a face and holding her hands up in the ‘I surrender’ motion. Emily hurried out into the hall with JJ on her heels. The girl kicked the door shut angrily, and the sound of her retching ensued.

“There was a funnel,” JJ offered as an explanation. She leaned against the door. “How has your night been?”

Emily blinked. JJ was making conversation. She didn’t want Emily to leave just yet.

“So far so good,” Emily replied. “Doing better than your friend, at least.”

“That’s not hard to do. So I guess you didn’t chug from a funnel yet?” JJ quipped, smiling and revealing a perfect, white smile.

“Oh I have that scheduled for one-thirty, actually,” Emily said, pretending to check her watch and grinning.

“Let me know before you do, I’d like to watch that,” JJ said casually.

A wave of heat rushed to Emily’s face as she realized that drinking from a funnel would entail Emily on her knees, with JJ watching her… a thought that she needed to push out of her brain immediately.

“I’ll have you know,” Emily said in retort, “I can chug amongst the best. I am no stranger to these sorts of parties.”

JJ grinned. “Oh yeah?”

“I’m a reigning beer pong champ, I’ll have you know.”

They laughed.

“I saw your last victory. Very impressive.”

JJ, in a controlled fall, slid down the door and sat down in the hall, resigning herself to waiting for her friend. Emily wondered if she should return to Morgan now, but unable to tear herself away from the opportunity for a conversation with JJ.

“I’m awful at pong,” the blonde admitted. “I miss every time.”

“You probably just need a good teacher.”

JJ raised her eyebrows, “oh yeah?”

“I mean,” Emily said, sitting down onto the top step of the staircase, facing her floormate, “it’s all about hand eye coordination. It’s basically a sport. You need a coach.”

They both laughed.

“Well if that’s the case, why don’t you teach me?”

Emily gulped.

The door opened, and JJ fell back slightly before catching herself.

“I’m going home,” JJ’s friend announced.

JJ looked up at her dishevelled friend and nodded, turning back to look at Emily apologetically.

“Another time?” Emily offered, smiling before walking down the stairs and rejoining the party.

Interesting to see some semblance of Soleil discourse again. I hated her when i played fates, and was genuinly surprised that people really loved her. Do you think a lot of her shittier aspects were from Fates' shoddy translation, or was she always sort of bad?

Sorry for this taking so long! I figured I might as well make this a sort of definitive post about Soleil since I talk about her a lot, so I put some more research and effort into it than I initially planned.

Soleil’s writing does have a lot of differences between the Japanese version and localization, but I have many, many issues with both.

Japanese Soleil

Soleil in the Japanese version of Fates is, to put it simply, a train wreck. As we know, her defining trait is her love of girls. However, with Soleil it goes past attraction and flirting into outright predatory behavior.

In many of her Japanese supports, Soleil creeps around girls, be it generic girls off-screen, or her female support partners. She hits on her mother in their support, she plans to sneak behind girls and embrace them out of nowhere in her support with Ignatius, and she harasses Ophelia and planned to get a better look at the latter’s figure in the tents when they switched bodies.

But the absolute worst was her Japanese support with Forrest.

Basically, she’s chasing Forrest around because she’s convinced he’s a girl, despite him telling her over and over that he isn’t. Soleil is extra creepy in this one, saying things like “I can’t hold myself back anymore” and “I won’t do anything bad, so just give in.” Forrest goes so far as to even compare her to a wild animal stalking its prey.

Forrest then tells Soleil once again that he’s a boy, and what does she do? She asks him to prove it by getting naked and bathing with her. Forrest, of course, refuses again. Soleil then finds out from others around camp that Forrest was telling the truth; but she still can’t keep her urges down and keeps making unwanted advances and touches towards him.

That entire support is extreme sexual harassment. It is one of the worst supports I have ever read, especially since it’s played for laughs and it can later advance into an actual relationship between them. Treehouse did realize how bad this support was, and changed it from the ground up into something completely different, which is one of the very few things I will thank them for.

Now, localized Soleil is another beast entirely. Before going into my issues with her localized version, I’ll explain the context behind her trope.

A History Lesson

Soleil’s character at its core is based on the Class S trope. Class S is a Japanese term describing romantic friendships between girls. It’s origin and popularity is owed to things like western women’s literature (such as Little Women) being translated for Japanese audiences back in the early 20th century and the all-women Takarazuka Revue theater being established; these helped cultivate feelings of sisterhood and a sense of romance for young female audiences, especially since most schools at the time in Japane kept boys and girls separate. While there was a decline in the Class S genre after Japanese schools became more co-ed, it has made a resurgence in popularity ever since the late 90′s with light novels like Maria-sama ga Miteru.

Class S had a rather big impact on Japanese society, where it was actually expected to happen and treated as something wonderful for these kinds of close friendships to develop between young girls.

However. These aren’t treated as real romantic relationships. They’re seen as nothing more than a phase. After adolescence, girls are expected to ‘mature’ or ‘graduate’ in a sense, into a real relationship with a man. To still have Class S relationships with other girls when you’re supposed to be in a “real” relationship is seen as a sign of immaturity.

Soleil Herself

So what does this mean with Soleil? Lots of her supports in Japanese have other characters being bewildered or even annoyed by her continued love for girls, because “she’s technically an adult now, shouldn’t she have grown out of that phase?”

Shigure gets surprised that she’s trying to learn how to sing to impress girls. F!Corrin wonders why she won’t give up her mindset already. Soleil gets jealous of Asugi’s popularity with girls and childishly tries to imitate him. Sophie says she doesn’t have time for Soleil’s antics because the former is trying to be a mature, devoted knight. Ophelia is frustrated that they can’t be “normal” friends instead of Soleil chasing her around and proclaiming her love.

They treat her obsession/love for girls as something childish for an adult woman like her to still have, much like Japanese society does. Soleil is Class S.

Soleil does actually get a chance to technically grow out of this phase, much like adult women are expected to. She ‘graduates’ into adulthood once she becomes romantically involved with her male romance options in the Japanese version; a “real” relationship.

As a gay man, you can probably guess how I feel about this trope. While it has had impact on helping Japan ease up on its more conservative beliefs and lots of Class S media has been created by actual queer women (like Nobuko Yoshiya), it’s still not a great feeling when same sex relationships are basically treated as not real or just a phase in someone’s life. It sucks, especially when I think the Japanese Rhajat/F!Corrin support is one of best in Fates. But enough about me, what does this have to do with localized Soleil?

Where The Localization Fumbled

Since she was already getting her fair share of controversy thanks to the many incorrect reports of conversion therapy during her support with M!Corrin, Treehouse decided to go the whole mile and rewrite some aspects of her character. This included removing the Class S aspect of her, and adding in a line from Laslow (as well as her roster description) that basically confirms she’s bisexual.

Except... they messed it up. They made her apparently bisexual, but they removed the romantic aspect of almost all of her S supports, all of which are dudes. Instead, most of her S supports result in promises of friendship or partnership of some kind. The only romantic S supports she has in the localization are with M!Corrin because Avatar privilege, and Forrest, which can still kind of be taken as platonic.

This doesn’t make sense. Why go out of your way to make Soleil bisexual, but remove her romantic supports with dudes? Her wlw side isn’t suddenly erased if she were to marry a dude, what’s the deal here? Did two different people have a hand in this and just didn’t communicate? Did one intend to make her a lesbian and the other wanted her to be bi?

This is a huge inconsistency and fumble on Treehouse’s part, one of their biggest. Hell, besides that, they didn’t even remove all of her creepy aspects either; she still creeps on girls in her Ignatius support (she now plans to pinch them instead of embrace them from behind), and while her support with Ophelia was toned down, it still isn’t great. Why go so halfway on this, especially since she’s the most controversial character in the game?

Conclusion & Overview

So yeah, those are my thoughts about Soleil. Her Japanese characterization is a predatory mess and based on a trope which I am not fond of whatsoever, while her localized characterization is only somewhat better as a person and is plagued by a whole slew of new writing problems because her bisexuality just wasn’t done correctly by Treehouse.

Which honestly? It makes me kind of sad. Soleil has a lot of good things about her. I like her shamelessness, her confidence. Her shyness is basically an inverse of Olivia’s, where the latter is shy all the time except when dancing whereas Soleil is only shy and insecure when dancing; it’s a neat full circle for the entire family line. She has a couple of great supports too, like with Laslow and Kiragi. Her design is adorable, she’s a good unit, female mercenaries are always a plus, and her new voice actress in Heroes is one of my favorites.

It’s just everything else is... bleh.

I don’t dislike her as much as I did a few months ago, because looking over her supports again endeared her to me a little, but unfortunately she still has too many things about her that I hate for me to say anything better than that.

May I ask why it is you didn't write any homophobia into your fanfic?

You may!

I was born in 1969. When I was a young girl growing up in the 70′s, there was absolutely nothing available to me that referenced anything queer. No books, no media, nothing at all. And by nothing, I mean NOTHING.

Were there queer people in the 1970′s? Oh my yes. But I knew nothing about them because it was just not part of my world. As far as I knew, queer people did not exist.

The first time I learned about queer people was overhearing a conversation when I was about nine or so about my Dad’s co-worker Ernie, a lovely first generation Chinese American man who often came to our house to hang out and who once brought me a beautiful doll from China that had long black hair and a hanfu with lilies all over it. My mother was saying something to my Dad about not wanting Ernie around my younger brother and me because he was gay and my father got pretty pissed off at her about it. I couldn’t understand why Ernie being happy would be such a bad thing, so I asked my Dad later and he explained what that meant. My Dad being the guy he was, he pretty much normalized it for me and I took it at face value.

The summers of 1983 and 1984 I attended acting school in San Francisco and that’s when I learned a lot more about queer people. That was smack dab in the middle of the AIDS epidemic; one of the teachers lost his best friend the night before our class and sat on the floor and sobbed and sobbed about it. It was, you can believe me, a real eye opener.

But you see, this is what the media told me about gay people as a teenager in the 80′s: they all had AIDS and were spreading it to straight people. They were pedophiles. The men were desperate, lonely people or overdramatic bitches that fucked anything that moved. The women were mean and ugly and out to steal other people’s wives or weird hippy pagan ladies that never shaved and smelled. They would all come to a bad end, one way or the other.

My biology/sex ed teacher in 9th grade told us that same-sex crushes were normal for teenagers and that they would go away and didn’t mean we were gay. Oh, I thought. Well then I guess laying awake all night thinking about Annie Lennox in the Sweet Dreams video and that one redheaded girl on the varsity volleyball team is just something I’ll grow out of.

(Spoiler alert: I did not grow out of it.)

I did not think of myself as being queer. For one thing, I still found boys attractive. For another, Mr. Powell told us it was something we’d grow out of. And I wasn’t like any of those women that we started seeing bits and pieces of in the media. So I just didn’t think about it.

I was at university in the late 80′s and early 90′s, studying theater, and then of course I was introduced to plenty of queer people. That was when I realized that yeah, okay, this is not going away. I am attracted to both men and women; I am bisexual. (Pansexual wasn’t something I’d heard of then but it’s how I identify now.)

Were we in the media? Eh...not so much. A glimpse here and there. But again, not much. And when we were in the news? It was Matthew Shephard (oh god, I remember sitting on the floor and hyperventilating when I saw that on the news) or it was Boys Don’t Cry or Will and Grace where Will was played as straight by a straight guy and never had a boyfriend and Jack was played for laughs.

This was not what my life was like.

I did come out to my family in my 20′s when I got a girlfriend; no one liked my girlfriend (god, she was so hot but such bad news; the sex was so so so good but she was so so so rotten, learn from my fail, children) but the fact that I was queer fazed none of them on either side. I come from very liberal stock, however. (Very liberal.) When I divorced my first husband and brought my then Finnish girlfriend around everyone loved her. It was not a traumatic experience for me. It hasn’t been traumatic for me in Finland, for the most part.

Of course I understand that this is not the norm for everyone coming out. I know people suffer from discrimination; I am next door to Russia, I know what the fuck is going on in Chechnya. Trans people in Finland are still required by law to be sterilized before they can legally transition. Gay marriage only became legal here very recently. I know kids get kicked out by their parents, still get sent to conversion camps. I am aware of the kind of violence transpeople are subjected to.

But this is my point. What are people still seeing on the news? What do they see in media? Homophobia, coming out trauma, violence, rejection, people having to engage in political debate for their right to simply exist. Is it better than it was even ten years ago? Oh yes, it really is. Absolutely it is. Is it good, though? Is it normalized?

Nope. Not yet. And I firmly believe that a huge part of that is because queer media is still being produced by straight people. Many of whom mean well, of course. But it’s not their story.

I know it can be very important, especially for younger readers, to read stories about coming out, about homophobia. It’s a way for them to process it and I’m not about to sit here and say that’s wrong. It’s not wrong! But there’s a world of difference between a queer person writing their own experiences as a form of processing and a straight person using those experiences as a means of conflict in their stories.

Do I think Bryke had good intentions writing a whole coming out arc for Korra in the comics? Retconning homophobia into their universe? I do. I absolutely do! I think they are very careful and thoughtful about representation. It matters to them.

But the fact remains that Korra’s coming out and the subsequent retcon of homophobia was written by a straight man in order to add conflict/drama to his story. There is no other reason for it to be there; Korra being queer does not require a coming out storyline nor subsequent homophobia.

Let me repeat this:

Being queer does not require coming out or homophobia. That is something that straight people add to the stories of our lives, both in real life as well as media.

So that’s what I am doing in my fic. I am normalizing queerness. Am I doing it perfectly? Of course not; I’ve been learning to write with my fic, and I’ve made certain choices I would like to go back and change now. But I am making a choice to write the kind of world I think queer people should be living in: I am normalizing us.

My queer characters have negative things happen to them; they are as human as I can make them. They don’t live in a utopia. But the things that happen to them do not happen because of their gender or sexuality. I am not now nor will I ever be killing my gays.

Taylor Swift Bent the Music Industry to Her Will

In the 2010s, she became its savviest power player.

n late November 2019, Taylor Swift gave a career-spanning performance at the American Music Awards before accepting the statue for Artist of the Decade. (Swift was perhaps the perfect cross between the award’s two previous recipients, Britney Spears and Garth Brooks.) Clad in a cascading rose-colored cape and holding court among the younger female artists in attendance - 17-year-old Billie Eilish, 22-year-old Camila Cabello, 25-year-old Halsey - Swift had the queenly air of an elder stateswoman. After picking up five additional awards, including Artist of the Year, she became the show’s most decorated artist in history. “This is such a great year in music. The new artists are insane,” she declared in her acceptance speech, with big-sister gravitas. That night, she finally outgrew that “Who, me?” face of perpetual awards-show surprise; she accepted the honors she won like an artist who believed she had worked hard enough to deserve them.

Swift cut an imposing adult figure up there, because somewhere along the line she’d become one. The 2010s have coincided almost exactly with Swift’s 20s, with the subtle image changes and maturations across her last five album cycles coming to look like an Animorphs cover of a savvy and talented young woman gradually growing into her power. And so to reflect on the Decade in Taylor Swift is to assess not just her sonic evolutions but her many industry chess moves: She took Spotify to task in a Wall Street Journal op-ed and got Apple to reverse its policy of not paying artists royalties during a three-month free trial of its music-streaming service. She sued a former radio DJ for allegedly groping her during a photo op and demanded just a symbolic victory of $1, as if to say the money wasn’t the point. Critics wondered whether she was leaning too heavily on her co-writers, so she wrote her entire 2010 album, Speak Now, herself, without any collaborators. In 2018, she severed ties with her longtime label, Big Machine Records, and negotiated a new contract with Universal Music Group that gave her ownership of her masters and assurance that she (and any other artist on the label) would be paid out if UMG ever sold its Spotify shares. Yes, she stoked the flames of her celebrity feuds with Kanye West, Kim Kardashian West, and Katy Perry plenty over the past ten years, but she’s also focused some of her combative energy on tackling systemic problems and fashioning herself into something like the music industry’s most high-profile vigilante. Few artists have made royalty payments and the minutiae of entertainment-law front-page news as often as Swift has.

Within the industry, Swift has always had the reputation of being something of a songwriting savant (in 2007, when “Our Song” was released, then-17-year-old Swift became the youngest person ever to write and perform a No. 1 song on the Billboard Country chart), but she has long desired to be considered an industry power player, too. A 2011 New Yorker profile of Swift circa her blockbuster Speak Now World Tour noted that she initially intended to follow her parents’ footsteps and pursue a career in business, quoting her saying, “I didn’t know what a stockbroker was when I was 8, but I would just tell everybody that’s what I was going to be.” In an even earlier interview, she fondly recalled the times in elementary school when she stayed up late with her mother, practicing for school presentations. “I’m sick of women not being able to say that they have strategic business minds - because male artists are allowed to,” she said this year in an unusually candid Rolling Stone interview. “And I’m so sick and tired of having to pretend like I don’t mastermind my own business.” Of course, she still spent plenty of time sitting at her piano or strumming her guitar, but in that conversation she painted herself as someone who is also “sit[ting] in a conference room several times a week,” coming up with ideas about how best to market her music and her career.

And so over the past decade, Swift’s face has appeared not just on magazine covers and television screens, but on UPS trucks and Amazon packages. Her songs have been featured in Target commercials and NFL spots, to name just two of her many lucrative partnerships. That New Yorker profile also found her to be uncommonly enthused about the fact that her CDs were being sold in Starbucks: “I was so stoked about it, because it’s been one of my goals - I always go into Starbucks, and I wished that they would sell my album.”

“Taylor Swift is something like the Sheryl Sandberg of pop music,” Hazel Cills wrote recently in Jezebel. “She has propelled her career from tiny country artist into pop machine over the past few years with little shame when it comes to corporate collaborators.” Such brazen femme-capitalism will always be a turnoff to some people (“the Sheryl Sandberg of pop music” is even less of a compliment in 2019 than it was when Lean In was first published), but it’s undeniable that it has helped Swift maintain and leverage her status as a commercial juggernaut more consistently than any other pop star over the past ten years.

In the 2010s, with the clockwork certainty of a midterm election, there was a Taylor Swift album every other autumn. (Yes, there was a three-year gap between 1989 and Reputation, but she all but made up for it with the quick timing of August’s Lover.) The kinds of pop superstars considered her peers did not stick to such rigid schedules: Adele released two studio albums this decade, Beyoncé released three, and even Rihanna - who for the first three years of the decade was averaging an album a year - eventually slowed her roll and will have released just four when the 2010s are all said and done. The only A-plus-list musician who saturated the market as steadily as Swift did this decade was Drake.

Still, Drake’s commercial dominance was more of a newfangled phenomenon, capitalizing on the industry’s sudden reliance on streaming and his massive popularity on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Drake might be the artist who rode the streaming wave most successfully this decade, but - with her strategic withholding of her albums from certain platforms until they better compensated artists - Swift was often the one bending it to her will. And she could do that because she didn’t need to rely on it solely: Somehow, against all odds, Taylor Swift still sold records. Like, gazillions of them. When Swift’s 2017 record, Reputation (some critics thought it was a critical misstep, but it certainly wasn’t a commercial one), moved 1.216 million units in its first seven days, Swift became the only artist in history to achieve four different million-selling weeks. And, of course, all four of these weeks came during a decade when traditional album sales were on a precipitous decline. At least for those mere mortals who were not an all-powerful being named Taylor Alison Swift.

“Female empowerment” has been such an ambient, unquestioned virtue of the pop culture of this decade that we have too often failed to take a step back and ask ourselves what sort of power is being advocated for, and if its attainment should always be a cause for celebration. Is “female empowerment” any different from the hollow, materialistic promises of the late ’90s “girl power”? Is “female power” inherently different or more benevolent than its default male counterpart? Maybe this feels like such a distinctly American hang-up because we have not yet experienced that mythic, oft-imagined figure of the First Female President, and have thus not had to contend with the cold reality that, whoever she is, she will, like all of us, be inevitably flawed, imperfect, and at least occasionally disappointing.

As she’s grown into her own brand of 21st-century American pop feminism - sometimes elegantly, sometimes gawkily - Swift seems to have come to a firm conviction that female power is essentially more virtuous than the male variety. This was a side of herself she celebrated in her AMA performance. Swift opened her medley with a few fiery bars of “The Man,” her own personalized daydream of what gender equality would look like: “I’m so sick of running as fast as I can,” she sings, “wondering if I’d get there quicker if I was a man.” She wore an oversize white button-down onto which the titles of her old albums were stamped in a correctional-facility font: SPEAK NOW, RED, 1989, REPUTATION. Plenty of the millions of people who scrutinize Swift’s every move interpreted her choice of outfit and song as not-so-subtle jabs at Big Machine’s Scott Borchetta and the manager-to-the-stars Scooter Braun, with whom Swift is still in a messy, uncommonly public battle over the fate of her master recordings. (The only album title missing from her outfit was “LOVER,” which happens to be the only one of which she has full ownership.) She has framed the terms of her battle with Borchetta and Braun in strikingly gendered language: “These are two very rich, very powerful men, using $300 million of other people’s money to purchase, like, the most feminine body of work,” she told Rolling Stone. “And then they’re standing in a wood-panel bar doing a tacky photo shoot, raising a glass of Scotch to themselves.” Though she is herself a very rich, very powerful woman, she reads their message to be unquestionably condescending: Be a good little girl and shut up.

It is true that many record contracts are designed to take advantage of young artists, and that young women and people of color are probably perceived by music executives to be the marks most vulnerable to exploitation. But it is also true that Swift signed a legally binding contract, the kind that a businesswoman like herself would have to respect if it were signed by somebody else. Braun, who has been asking to have these negotiations in private rather than on Twitter, claims to have received death threats from her fans.

Even as she’s grown into one of the most dominant pop-culture figures in the world, Swift sometimes still seems to be clinging to her old underdog identity, to the extent that she can fail to grasp the magnitude of her own power or account for the blind spots of her privilege. “Someday I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me,” she sang on Speak Now’s Grammy-winning 2010 single “Mean,” seemingly oblivious to the fact that, compared to 99.99 percent of the population, she already was. The mid-decade backlash to Swift’s thin-white-celebrity-and-model-studded “girl squad” - none of which was more incisive than Lara Marie Schoenhals’s hilarious parody video - took her by surprise. “I never would have imagined that people would have thought, This is a clique that wouldn’t have accepted me if I wanted to be in it... I thought it was going to be we can still stick together, just like men are allowed to.”

“Female power” is not automatically faultless, and can of course be tainted by all other sorts of biases and assumptions about class, race, and sexual orientation, to name just a few more common pitfalls. Swift’s face-palm-inducing 2015 misunderstanding with Nicki Minaj revealed this, of course, and plenty of people felt that her sudden embrace of the LGBTQ community in the “You Need to Calm Down” was a clumsy overcorrection for her past silence. Maybe she would have gotten where she was quicker if she were a man. Art has its own kind of power - sneakier and harder to measure than the economic kind. The reason Taylor Swift has been worth talking about incessantly for an entire decade is that she continues to wield this kind, too. “I don’t think her commercial responsibilities detract from her genuine passion for her craft,” a then-17-year-old Tavi Gevinson wrote in a memorable 2013 essay for The Believer. “Have you ever watched her in interviews when she gets asked about her actual songwriting? She becomes that kid who’s really into the science fair.”

After so much industry drama, much of the lived-in, self-reflective Lover is a simple reminder that Swift was and still is a singular songwriter. Yes, this was the decade of such loud, flashy missteps as “Look What You Made Me Do,” “Welcome to New York,” and “Me!,” but it was also a decade of so many quieter triumphs: the pulsing synesthesia of “Red,” the nervous heart flutter of “Delicate,” the sleek sophistication of “Style,” the concise lyricism of “Mean,” the cathartic fun of “22,” the slow-dance swoon of “Lover.” But like so many of her fans, and even Swift herself, I still find the most enduringly powerful song she’s ever written to be “All Too Well,” the smoldering breakup scrapbook released on her great 2012 album Red. “Wind in my hair, I was there, I remember it all too well,” she sings, an innocent enough lyric that, by the end of the song, comes to glint like a switchblade. In a decade of DGAF, ghosting, and performative chill, remembering it all too well might be Swift’s stealthiest superpower. She felt it deeply, can still access that feeling whenever she needs to, and that means she can size you up in a line as concisely cutting as “so casually cruel in the name of being honest.” Forget Jake Gyllenhaal or John Mayer. That’s the sort of observation that would bring Goliath to his knees.

“It is still the case that when listeners hear a female voice, they do not hear a voice that connotes authority,” the historian Mary Beard writes in her manifesto Women & Power, “or rather they have not learned how to hear authority in it.” At least in the realm of pop music, Swift has spent the better part of her decade chipping away at that double standard, and teaching people how to think about cultural power a little bit differently. She sprinkled artful emblems of teen-girl-speak through her smash hits (“Uhhh he calls me and he’s like, ‘I still love you,’ and I’m like, ‘This is exhausting, we are never getting back together, like, ever”) and did not abandon her effusive love of kittens and butterflies in order to be taken seriously. As an artist and a businesswoman, she made the power of teen girls - and the women who used to be them - that much more perilous to ignore. Because they’ve been there all along, and they remember all too well.

Taylor Swift Bent the Music Industry to Her Will

In the 2010s, she became its savviest power player.

In late November 2019, Taylor Swift gave a career-spanning performance at the American Music Awards before accepting the statue for Artist of the Decade. (Swift was perhaps the perfect cross between the award’s two previous recipients, Britney Spears and Garth Brooks.) Clad in a cascading rose-colored cape and holding court among the younger female artists in attendance — 17-year-old Billie Eilish, 22-year-old Camila Cabello, 25-year-old Halsey — Swift had the queenly air of an elder stateswoman. After picking up five additional awards, including Artist of the Year, she became the show’s most decorated artist in history. “This is such a great year in music. The new artists are insane,” she declared in her acceptance speech, with big-sister gravitas. That night, she finally outgrew that “Who, me?” face of perpetual awards-show surprise; she accepted the honors she won like an artist who believed she had worked hard enough to deserve them.

Within the industry, Swift has always had the reputation of being something of a songwriting savant (in 2007, when “Our Song” was released, then-17-year-old Swift became the youngest person ever to write and perform a No. 1 song on the Billboard Country chart), but she has long desired to be considered an industry power player, too. A 2011 New Yorker profile of Swift circa her blockbuster Speak Now World Tour noted that she initially intended to follow her parents’ footsteps and pursue a career in business, quoting her saying, “I didn’t know what a stockbroker was when I was 8, but I would just tell everybody that’s what I was going to be.” In an even earlier interview, she fondly recalled the times in elementary school when she stayed up late with her mother, practicing for school presentations. “I’m sick of women not being able to say that they have strategic business minds — because male artists are allowed to,” she said this year in an unusually candid Rolling Stone interview. “And I’m so sick and tired of having to pretend like I don’t mastermind my own business.” Of course, she still spent plenty of time sitting at her piano or strumming her guitar, but in that conversation she painted herself as someone who is also “sit[ting] in a conference room several times a week,” coming up with ideas about how best to market her music and her career.

And so over the past decade, Swift’s face has appeared not just on magazine covers and television screens, but on UPS trucks and Amazon packages. Her songs have been featured in Target commercials and NFL spots, to name just two of her many lucrative partnerships. That New Yorker profile also found her to be uncommonly enthused about the fact that her CDs were being sold in Starbucks: “I was so stoked about it, because it’s been one of my goals — I always go into Starbucks, and I wished that they would sell my album.”

In the 2010s, with the clockwork certainty of a midterm election, there was a Taylor Swift album every other autumn. (Yes, there was a three-year gap between 1989 and Reputation, but she all but made up for it with the quick timing of August’s Lover.) The kinds of pop superstars considered her peers did not stick to such rigid schedules: Adele released two studio albums this decade, Beyoncé released three, and even Rihanna — who for the first three years of the decade was averaging an album a year — eventually slowed her roll and will have released just four when the 2010s are all said and done. The only A-plus-list musician who saturated the market as steadily as Swift did this decade was Drake.

Still, Drake’s commercial dominance was more of a newfangled phenomenon, capitalizing on the industry’s sudden reliance on streaming and his massive popularity on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Drake might be the artist who rode the streaming wave most successfully this decade, but — with her strategic withholding of her albums from certain platforms until they better compensated artists — Swift was often the one bending it to her will. And she could do that because she didn’t need to rely on it solely: Somehow, against all odds, Taylor Swift still sold records. Like, gazillions of them. When Swift’s 2017 record, Reputation (some critics thought it was a critical misstep, but it certainly wasn’t a commercial one), moved 1.216 million units in its first seven days, Swift became the only artist in history to achieve four different million-selling weeks. And, of course, all four of these weeks came during a decade when traditional album sales were on a precipitous decline. At least for those mere mortals who were not an all-powerful being named Taylor Alison Swift.

As she’s grown into her own brand of 21st-century American pop feminism — sometimes elegantly, sometimes gawkily — Swift seems to have come to a firm conviction that female power is essentially more virtuous than the male variety. This was a side of herself she celebrated in her AMA performance. Swift opened her medley with a few fiery bars of “The Man,” her own personalized daydream of what gender equality would look like: “I’m so sick of running as fast as I can,” she sings, “wondering if I’d get there quicker if I was a man.” She wore an oversize white button-down onto which the titles of her old albums were stamped in a correctional-facility font: SPEAK NOW, RED, 1989, REPUTATION. Plenty of the millions of people who scrutinize Swift’s every move interpreted her choice of outfit and song as not-so-subtle jabs at Big Machine’s Scott Borchetta and the manager-to-the-stars Scooter Braun, with whom Swift is still in a messy, uncommonly public battle over the fate of her master recordings. (The only album title missing from her outfit was “LOVER,” which happens to be the only one of which she has full ownership.) She has framed the terms of her battle with Borchetta and Braun in strikingly gendered language: “These are two very rich, very powerful men, using $300 million of other people’s money to purchase, like, the most feminine body of work,” she told Rolling Stone. “And then they’re standing in a wood-panel bar doing a tacky photo shoot, raising a glass of Scotch to themselves.” Though she is herself a very rich, very powerful woman, she reads their message to be unquestionably condescending: Be a good little girl and shut up.

Even as she’s grown into one of the most dominant pop-culture figures in the world, Swift sometimes still seems to be clinging to her old underdog identity, to the extent that she can fail to grasp the magnitude of her own power or account for the blind spots of her privilege. “Someday I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me,” she sang on Speak Now’s Grammy-winning 2010 single “Mean,” seemingly oblivious to the fact that, compared to 99.99 percent of the population, she already was. The mid-decade backlash to Swift’s thin-white-celebrity-and-model-studded “girl squad” — none of which was more incisive than Lara Marie Schoenhals’s hilarious parody video — took her by surprise. “I never would have imagined that people would have thought, This is a clique that wouldn’t have accepted me if I wanted to be in it … I thought it was going to be we can still stick together, just like men are allowed to.”

Fair warning though, I wrote this a few years ago before Bambam and Yugy glowed up lol So they’re quite cute in this haha...ALSO! I’m following the Korean high school system in this story, which goes from 10th through 12th and begins in the spring ^^ - Ch. 1: The First Meeting Go Ahnmi stood behind Yugyeom, as if she were trying to sink into his shadow. But Yugyeom took hold of her shoulders and pushed her into the circle of guys awaiting her. “Guys, this is my older cousin, Go Ahnmi. She’s transferring to our school tomorrow,” he explained to the other six guys standing before her like towers. They all sent smiles her way, although Ahnmi could only stare at her shoes. She slowly raised her head, not looking at anyone in particular. “H-Hi,” she half-mumbled. “Cute!” one of the guys cooed loudly. He stepped in front of her, bending slightly to meet her eye level. “My name is Jackson! What year are you?” Ahnmi squirmed under the sudden eye contact. She looked away only to meet eyes with another pale-faced, handsome boy, making her even more nervous. She stepped back towards Yugyeom, almost leaning on him. He gave her another nudge. “Um, I’m a 96-er. I’ll be a 2ndyear.” “Hey, you’ll be in my grade then! We might even be classmates. My name is Choi Youngjae!” another guy introduced cheerfully. Ahnmi glanced up to see a boy smiling happily, his brown hair was tousled messily and his eyes were curled into little crescents. Ahnmi mustered up a small smile towards him. “Youngjae-sshi…nice to meet you.” Jackson burst out into a sudden squeal. “She’s so cute!”

She blushed, staring back down at her shoes. The guy beside Jackson chuckled. He had neat, black hair and was dressed just as neatly in his cardigan and button up. He squeezed Jackson’s arms firmly. “Please ignore him, Jackson is…very friendly. I’m Park Jinyoung by the way. Jackson and I are both seniors.” Another guy who had been standing quietly in front of her cleared his throat. “My name is Im Jaebum. I’m a third year also. Please feel free to rely on us.” He bowed slightly causing the flustered Ahnmi to bow 90 degrees. “Sunbae,” she said softly. Jackson clapped his hands in excitement, trying to contain another squeal. “Hi!” the next boy spoke up. “I’m Bambam! I’m a first year like Yugyeom.” Ahnmi raised her head to see a skinny boy smiling shyly towards her. She smiled and gave him a nod. “I’ve seen Bambam before.” He looked surprised, grinning even more now. “Really? How?” “Yugyeom, he texted me a picture,” she explained carefully, trying not to notice the intense stares from all the guys around her. Bambam tilted his head curiously. Hesitantly, Ahnmi raised her arms halfway up and diagonally. She bent her head into the crook of her arm, then looked up to find all the guys laughing loudly. “Dab?” “Dab!” “DAB DAB!” “Bambam is always dabbing!” “Yeah, it’s true, I am,” Bambam admitted easily, laughing in embarrassment with the guys. Ahnmi smiled quietly, raising her head more courageously. “Hey,” the last guy to speak said, trying to settle down the laughing guys. Ahnmi turned slightly, meeting eyes with the handsome guy from before. He smiled as their eyes met. He had a cap on backwards so that his light brown hair peaked out just slightly from underneath. “I’m Mark Tuan.” Ahnmi nodded her head, waiting for more to come but he was already looking away. “Ah,” Ahnmi said, realizing he was done talking. She bowed towards him. “Nice to meet you, Mark.” “Yah! Are you blushing?!” Yugyeom called her out suddenly. Ahnmi turned red in the face at the sudden reproach from her cousin. Jinyoung sighed. “Of course, no one can resist Mark’s handsomeness.” he smiled reassuringly at her. “It’s okay. I’m a guy and still feel butterflies sometimes.” Mark laughed at this response. Jackson walked over and took Ahnmi’s arm, pulling her further away from Mark and towards his and Jinyoung’s side. “Look Ahnmi,” Jackson ushered her to look up at Mark’s face, who was still laughing. “Don’t let that face fool you, he’s actually the oldest out of all of us!” Ahnmi made a small gasp and bowed towards him again. “Sunbae.” The guys broke out into laughter again, Jackson jumping up and down with Jinyoung while screaming “cute” over and over. Ahnmi blushed, staring at her shoes again, not knowing what to do. She turned to her cousin. Yugyeom patted her shoulder. “Don’t worry Ahnmi, these guys are probably the craziest ones in the school. If you can survive them then school is going to be a breeze.” Youngjae walked over to her, nodding. “That’s true, especially Jackson. If you can survive Jackson then all the other guys will be like nothing. Plus, I’ll be there to help you too. We’re buddies now!” Ahnmi smiled at Youngjae’s brightness. She was really glad Yugyeom had such nice friends. She turned to Yugyeom, rubbing his arm apologetically. “Sorry you have to take care of me like this even though I’m supposed to be the older one. In the future, I hope you can rely on me more.” Yugyeom chuckled, “I’m holding you to that Ahnmi. You’re gonna be my black knight!” Youngjae laughed. “Yugyeom, why do you look like a giant next to your black knight?” “Hey,” Yugyeom insisted, “these guys, their teasing is no joke. And besides, Ahnmi is a noona~!” “Urgh,” Youngjae grimaced at his sudden aegyo while Ahnmi chuckled to herself. “Maknae role really doesn’t suit you!” “Exactly, so you guys need to stop treating me like one!” Ahnmi smiled brightly now, amused by their bickering. “By the way, Noona,” Bambam called for her attention now. “That was a very weak dab.” Ahnmi covered her laugh. Yugyeom had been sending her pictures of Bambam every time he had a break in class, but she didn’t realize how adorable he was in real life. She smiled at Bambam. “Will you be my teacher then?” Bambam grinned with excitement. “You’re gonna be a dab-addict like me when I’m done teaching you!” “Hey, hey! Guys she’s talking!” Jackson screamed with excitement, bouncing between Jinyoung, Mark, and Jaebum before finally standing right in front of her and Bambam. “What are you guys doing?” Ahnmi glanced up at this bright, puppy-like boy, amused but slightly afraid of his sudden outbursts. The other boys leaned in closer, curiously. “I’m gonna teach her how to dab properly!” Bambam announced proudly. All the other guys groaned. “Don’t listen to him, Ahnmi,” Jinyoung insisted. “We can only handle one dab-addict.” Mark chuckled quietly to himself. “Can you imagine a dabbing Ahnmi?” Ahnmi blushed in embarrassment. Jackson and Jinyoung began joke-dabbing, causing Bambam to join them excitedly. Ahnmi couldn’t hold it in anymore. She began laughing openly, echoing the laughter that was all around her. Yugyeom gave her a pat on the back. “You’re gonna fit right in, Ahnmi ah.” - Mark stood in front of the house gate awkwardly. “Stupid Yugyeom,” he mumbled under his breath, kicking at a rock that was on the ground. The gate opened suddenly, a small Ahnmi rushing out in a beige sweater that looked too big for her and a navy pleated skirt. Her long wavy hair was tousled, looking like she barely had time to even smooth it out with her fingers. “I’m sorry, Sunbae!” she immediately bowed continuously his way. He tried to contain his laughter. “You can just call me Mark. I don’t care for honorifics.” He grabbed hold of her school bag and started walking. Ahnmi blushed. “M…Mark?” He looked at her to go on. She went back to staring at her shoes. “I’m sorry.” He sighed as she apologized again. See? Why would Yugyeom leave this poor girl on her first day of school? It’s not like he couldn’t just miss a morning of dance practice. She was family, after all. “I’m sorry,” Ahnmi repeated. “I should’ve checked the directions to school beforehand.” “Hey,” Mark said, bending slightly to meet her eye level. “No worries, okay? I live right across the street so it’s fine.” Ahnmi smiled shyly. “I-I can hold my own bag.” Mark tossed the bag over his shoulder so she couldn’t grab it from him. “I was once a newbie to this place too. It’s okay to receive help, you know.” Ahnmi nodded her head obediently, trying her best to keep up with Mark’s pace. “Remember to look up,” Mark added. “If you want to remember your way to school.” “Ah!” Ahnmi raised her head up in alarm, realizing that they had already walked for a while and she hadn’t been paying attention at all. She bit her finger with worry. How was she going to walk back home from school? Seeing the sudden concern on her face, he couldn’t help smiling. Jackson was right, this girl was extremely adorable. Even the way she was walking, looking like she was half-racing with him, was amusing. He debated to himself whether to slow down his pace or keep watching her struggle. He eventually walked slower for her. How was this shy little girl going to survive a practically all boy’s school? Her clumsy charm was definitely going to catch the eyes of all the guys. He wondered if she could handle all that attention. She could barely stand the attention from seven guys. He hoped the few girls that were at the school would take care of her. It didn’t help that she was so shy. She didn’t seem like a city girl at all. “Directions are more straightforward here than in the city,” he spoke up. She looked surprised at his sudden speaking but nodded her head. “It’s quieter,” she responded, almost in a whisper. She went back to staring pensively at her shoes only to jerk her head suddenly again so she could see where they were walking. He almost broke out into laughter after seeing that. The second-year boys were in for a surprise. He wondered if there were even any second-year girls. The school had only become a co-ed school this year so the handful of girls that did enroll were first-years. Wow, if Ahnmi is the only girl in her grade…Mark couldn’t even begin to imagine how wild the boys would be around her. “Are you,” Ahnmi suddenly began, “Are you in any afterschool clubs?” “No,” he replied. He paused, then added, “so don’t worry about getting back home. You’re probably going to have seven guys escorting you back today.” She smiled shyly, playing with the edges of her sleeves that went past her hands. She looked up at him cautiously again. She gestured for her bag. “I-I can hold…” But he held the bag at a distance from her still. “Second-year boys are really,” his voice trailed off. Ahnmi tilted her head curiously. He patted her head with a sigh, fixing the hairs that were sticking out. “Just…prepare yourself before we head in.” Ahnmi nodded her head, even more worried now. If only Yugyeom was her age, they could’ve been in the same class. She wished she was a first year student instead. “We’re here,” Mark spoke up, handing her, her bag finally. “What’s your classroom number?” “2B.” Mark smiled, feeling a little more at ease. “2B is a fun class.” Ahnmi smiled to herself as they walked up the stairs to the second floor. Rather than a fun class, she would just be happy to have a class that liked her, or at the very least, didn’t hate her. She bowed again to Mark when they were at the entrance to 2B. “Thank you, M-ark…sunbae.” He smiled again, amused at her inability to choose what to call him. He nodded for her to go inside. “Good luck,” he whispered kindly before she entered the classroom. Mark laughed while walking to his own class as 2B exploded into a succession of shouts and laughter. She was going to need a lot of luck. - Ahnmi took a sharp inhale when she was greeted by all the boys with shouts of surprise and excitement. “Daebak!” “Yah, 2B just won the lottery!” “WE WON! WE WON!” “AHHH! She’s cute too!” “HEY! What’s your name?!” Ahnmi bit her finger nervously, looking to the teacher for help. The tired looking teacher tried to hush the boys, only to look at Ahnmi apologetically. “Don’t mind the boys,” he said. “They’re just happy to be having a new classmate. Would you like to introduce yourself?” Ahnmi nodded her head shyly before walking up to the blackboard. When she grabbed the chalk, the whole class went quiet. Her back felt tense from all the eyes she knew were on her. She carefully wrote her name. “Wow, even her handwriting is cute,” someone whispered. She wondered to herself if she could just stay with her back to them forever. “My buddy~” a familiar voice called out. Ahnmi turned quickly to see a smiling Youngjae. She returned the smile, relieved to see a face that she recognized. “Yah!” “Who do you think you are, Youngjae?” “Why do you get to be her buddy?” The class broke into another fit of shouts and laughter before the teacher clapped for their attention again. He turned to Ahnmi to continue her introduction. “H-hi,” she began. The guys Ooo-ed and Ahh-ed after hearing her voice for the first time. “My name is Go Ahnmi. I recently moved here from Seoul.” “Oooh! A city girl!” Ahnmi blushed shyly, but willed herself to look up. She locked eyes with Youngjae who nodded his head encouragingly. “Umm, I’m new to this school and this town, so please bear with me. In the future…” she paused before breaking out into a smile, still looking only at Youngjae. “I hope we can all be buddies.” The class began hollering in excitement. “I’m Mr. Kim,” the teacher said to her. “Welcome to the class Ahnmi. Since it seems you know Youngjae, you can sit in the back desk next to him.” The rest of the class groaned with jealousy as Youngjae laughed. “Cute outfit,” Youngjae greeted her as she sat down. Ahnmi smiled at him. “It’s Yugyeom’s sweater.” He laughed, throwing his whole head back. “Looks like it too!” She fingered her sleeves timidly, looking down at her oversized sweater. “I wanted to match with the school uniform.” “Oh, that’s right, the girls don’t have a uniform yet. They might not make a second-year uniform,” Youngjae spoke aloud thoughtfully. “I think you might be the only second-year girl.” Ahnmi looked up at him nervously. She didn’t know if she could handle sticking out so much. “Should I wear a guy’s uniform then?” Youngjae burst out laughing. “I don’t think they come in your size, Ahnmi.” The boys around them turned their heads, looking enviously at the easygoing Youngjae. “Stop flirting, Youngjae!” the boy in front of Ahnmi turned to them and scowled.

Youngjae stood up suddenly. “It’s not flirting! I’m making her comfortable because that’s what friends do!” Ahnmi looked at Youngjae with awe. She wished she could speak so freely like him. She looked at the desk mate in front of her. He was a pretty skinny guy wearing thick, round glasses and had straight brown hair that swept at the side of his face. She courageously made eye contact with him. “I-I like your glasses,” Ahnmi commented quietly. The guy turned quickly back around, his ears turning red. The boys laughed happily. Youngjae looked at Ahnmi cheerfully. “The class atmosphere has become a lot better now that you’re here.” Ahnmi exhaled deeply, glad that things were going well so far. -

What the heck was up with that smoke cloud? It looked so real, and yet so out of place!

Ooh, I see Anti now has the ability to transform by himself…although I should’ve figured that out last episode, since I think that happened then as well.

So basically, it’s Boueibu LOVE! but with less meta. With lessons of mortality instead of the Kabuki Rule. Akane’s basically female!Kinshiro, right down to the hairdo…

Wow…someone really ran out of budget. It’s literally just a slideshow, but with black and white over it.

I laughed really hard at the explosions. Probably because I Photoshopped someone into a picture of an explosion and the scene with Kirill being shoved forward by an explosion reminded me of it…

I wanted Max to slap Travis, as weird as that might be for a show like this (but not for a show like Zombieland Saga). A punch in the gut’s good too, though.

“To be continued?” – Oh. Ohh. Ooh…Heh. I already knew there were some extra episodes, but at this point, there’s no ruling out a season 2, either…hmmm. I really wouldn’t mind a season 2, y’know.

Golden Kamuy 24 (FINAL)

For some reason, I’ve ben referring to Hijikata as “old fart” for the length of this episode (meaning “not long”). He’s an impressive old fart, to be sure, and he was hella nice-looking in his heyday, but in the age of Golden Kamuy, he’s still an old fart.

I thought “Say hello to my little friend” was from Scarface, not…whatever Tsurumi’s pulling here. (commnt made in jest with straight face)

Seriously, what happened to ruin Nopperabo/Wilk’s face, anyway?

Someone make me a Civil War poster with Golden Kamuy characters, stat!

Wait, so Kiroranke, Asirpa and co. are headed north to meet up with Kiroranke’s allies, which could cause a civil/national war. Hijikata and Blockhead Dick-sensei (forgot his name) are headed south due to the info they got from Inudou’s hut (the chapel). I’m pretty sure that’s what just happened, but…I could have missed a bit and then I’d be wrong.

“Send the beloved child on a journey” is a Japanese saying, by the way. That’s (probably?) what Sugimoto’s referring to when he talks with the boat captain (the elder Koito). Oddly, the elder Koito seems to drop the last O from “-dono”, which seems to be a Satsuma thing…?

Shield Hero 1

First anime of 2019 and it’s this one. Hoo boy – I’ve read one chapter of the manga, courtesy of CR. It’s gonna get nasty down in here, judging by the buzz that seems set to replicate Goblin Slayer’s…

Oh…that’s not a very favourable opening, the “It was all a dream” opening. Sure, it was gripping and showd Raphtalia (saw her name in promo material from ANN), but f*** if it weren’t overused at this point in time…

I always thought Shield Hero started out like Fushigi Yuugi…speaking of which, is that no longer on Crunchyroll?

Motoyasu’s got his own spinoff, so I’m hoping I’ll get to know him well over the next 12 weeks or so.

I find it interesting that they put the heroes together to reveal they’re from different versions of Japan so quickly. I’m pretty sure that didn’t happen in the manga.

Honestly, that “NOOOOOOOOOOOo!” could be an awesome reaction GIF. Just sayin’.

Sigh…Myne, Myne, Myne…you and your ways with Naofumi…

(Trigger warning: rape discussion) See? As I said, I knew this was going to happen. The thing is that it played out a lot more clearly in the anime than it did in the manga. As much as I don’t like the trope of “rape as accusation” enough (enough to have never encountered it before), it would be hypocritical of me to say I haven’t used it before – it appears in Half-Paid Heroes. However, one year out from having written it (due to the #MeToo movement), I can only say “rape is so not on”. I do not condone rape, but from a storytelling perspective it’s the perfect trope to make a character look like a monster and it makes a clearly false accusation have more oomph behind it, so…let’s just say Shield Hero’s doing its job here, making me despise Myne and the system in this world. Besides, I only stand on the side that does the better story.

For some reason, Naofumi’s “You can shove it all up your a***!” demand reminds me of when I’m angry and doing unreasonable demands…which means it’s won me over now.

I just realised…there hasn’t been much music until now…

(Trigger warning: slavery discussion) Oof. Now they’ve gotten to a new low of depravity in this show. Naofumi’s probably gonna buy a slave…again, I don’t condone this, but I assume Raphtalia is here.

Yep, even without knowing past ch 1, I was right on the money. That’s Raphtalia!

Poppies, huh? The symbol of bloodshed. What a perfect flower for this show, which demonstrates Naofumi’s blood, sweat and tears…

As much as I don’t condone some of the acts done in this show, I see some huge potential. Even if it’s got controversy flying around it like flies, I’ll stand with it. Are you with me?

Boogiepop 1 – 2

Double length premiere…oof, this’ll be tough on my spare time. Lately, I’ve been told to clean up the house a bunch and doing all manner of other things, so it’s just eating up time on all sides.

OP start is…for some reason, never a good start. For some reason, I just don’t like it. Maybe that might be the fact I was taught to start with a compelling opening scene when I was a fiction writer, though.

The subber got so bored they even subbed the Dengeki Bunko logo in the corner…wow. (sarcastic)

For some reason, the art style reminds me of Banana Fish (or Parasyte). Must be the chara designs.

This seems to be coated in a fine film of 90s edge. Or maybe the early 2000s, because that’s when this really comes from. C’mon, Takeda doesn’t even seem surprised when his mouth hangs open!

Notably, Boogiepop uses boku.

Wait, I don’t get why Boogiepop is called that. They pop the boogie(men)? That right?

I started zoning out and fiddling with my wrist in the middle of this episode. That’s another bad sign…

Wow, that ending’s really minimalist.

Currently, this episode raises more questions than it answers. Its overall impression level is trending slightly towards the negative. There must be a double premiere for a reason, though…let’s move on.

Wait - Kirima Seiichi? Is he Nagi’s father??? How did I not notice that earlier?

That manticore business seems to be correct…according to Wikipedia.

This doesn’t add up. Taniguchi. Kirima. Maybe Taniguchi is the name of the mother/father and Kirima is the name of the other parent? Update: Spoke too soon on this point and a previous one.

Kirima’s OS appears to be Windows 10 with a few adjustments.

Wait, but isn’t Suema meant to be the girl’s surname? Or is it Kinoshita? Update: It’s Suema. Kinoshita is another girl.

This white-haired man is the one from last episode, right? I didn’t really recognise him since there’s always terrible lighting plus he was wearing orange then, but yeah. Can’t believe I didn’t connect the dots there either.

White-haired man seems to be like Anti from Gridman. I presume he’s Echoes…? Update: Yup, Echoes it is.

Egao no Daika 1

This sounds like it’s outside my field of expertise, but I’ve been proven wrong before with Planet With, not to mention Toshiki Masuda is a character called Huey Malthis. It seems to be pretty standard Princess and the Pauper fare though…

There’s just a bunch of tablets with fancy-looking English on them…the heck?

Is it just me, or did the mecha game have the solitaire success sound effect…?

Ooh, I sense animosity regarding Japan’s emperor abdicating within this show (in a metaphorical sense)! I could analyse this show to bits, maybe…

The CGI in this actually ain’t that bad. Then again, we are talking about mechs here…

Netflix’s Never Have I Ever: Great TV Comedies to Watch Next

If there’s justice in this world, high school comedy Never Have I Ever will return for at least a third season. The story of 15-year-old Devi Vishwakumar, a Los Angeles teen reeling from her beloved father’s sudden death while trying to navigate all the usual boys/school/friendship mess of adolescence, deserves to continue long into the future. (Here’s our spoiler-free season two review.)

While fans wait for news on a third season commission, the 10 great shows below are well worth discovering or (re)discovering. They’re not all teen shows, nor are they all strictly comedies, but somewhere along the line, they share some DNA with Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher’s Never Have I Ever. Fresh Off the Boat

Six seasons (2015 – 2020)

Since the cruel early cancellation of her show Don’t Trust the B**** in Apt. 23 (Krysten Ritter’s funniest performance to date) it’s pretty much mandatory to watch anything Nahnatchka Khan makes. Fresh Off the Boat was her follow-up comedy for ABC, based on the early life of celebrity chef Eddie Huang as his family moved from Washington DC to Orlando. It’s set in the 90s and concluded last year after six seasons. The cast is great, in particular Randall Park (WandaVision, Always Be My Maybe) and Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians) as young Eddie’s Taiwanese immigrant parents, each of whom has very different mileage on adjusting to life in the US.

The Mindy Project

Six seasons (2012 – 2017)

This romantic comedy was Mindy Kaling’s post-The Office project – the story of self-absorbed, pop-culture obsessed, lovable OB/GYN Dr Mindy Lahiri (Kaling) and her search for love in Manhattan. After some cast changes in its first season, it really found its feet and settled into a sharp workplace comedy with a great ensemble. It survived a post-season three cancellation by FOX thanks to being picked up by Hulu for a further three seasons, and ended in 2017. US comedy fans can enjoy playing actor bingo too, thanks to appearances from many of Kaling’s The Office co-stars, including writer-producer B.J. Novak, Ellie Kemper, Ed Helms and more.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Four seasons (2015 – 2019)

Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna’s comedy-musical series is inventive, boundary-breaking and packed to the rafters with talent. Like a few of the shows in this list, it’s distinctly adult in theme and not a high school comedy but still shares the wit, high-key colour and bold approach to life’s harder moments as Never Have I Ever. It’s the story of high-flying NYC lawyer Rebecca Bunch, who gives up everything to move to a backwater Californian town to pursue her summer camp first love Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III). Rebecca’s love of musical theatre bleeds into the show, turning it into a mental health musical complete with funny, original, sharply written song-and-dance routines.

Popular

Two seasons (1999 – 2001)

The debut series from super-producer Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Pose, Glee, Nip/Tuck) co-created by Gina Matthews, Popular is the story of Brooke and Sam, two high school sophomores from opposite ends of the popularity spectrum who are forced together when their single parents become a couple. It ran for two seasons on The WB before being cancelled, and has since attracted a cult following for Murphy’s characteristically sharp blend of comedy, romance and serious themes. It landed in the 90s, so yes, the teens are played by 25 year olds, the unpopular nerd (Carly Pope) has model good looks, it’s not exactly diverse (though there is LGBTQ representation) but it’s seminal in Never Have I Ever’s genre.

Sex Education

Three seasons so far (2019 – )

Laurie Nunn’s charming British comedy-drama is a frank and funny look at sexual hang-ups and teen relationships. It has a great ensemble cast led by Otis (Asa Butterfield), a shy teen embarrassed by his sex therapist mother’s forthright attitude to all things physical. When Otis teams up with ‘bad girl’ Maeve to offer anonymised sex therapy to their schoolmates, he discovers that he’s not the only one with issues. It’s a bright and funny high school series with characters to invest in, a stand-out performance by Ncuti Gatwa as Eric, and oh, the sex therapist mother is played by Gillian Anderson. Season three arrives on Netflix this September.

Freaks & Geeks

One season (1999 – 2000)

A must-see high school comedy. Paul Feig and Judd Apatow’s 1980s-set series is most discussed these days for the outstanding cast of unknowns gathered by Allison Jones (who went on to cast The Office, Parks and Recreation, The Good Place, Arrested Development, Veep and basically every US sitcom worth watching). The prematurely cancelled NBC series kick-started the careers of Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Martin Starr, Busy Phillips, Linda Cardellini, James Franco and more. It’s the story of Cardellini’s Lindsay Weir, a maths star who crosses social boundaries from ‘geek’ to slacker ‘freak’ after the death of her grandmother. It’s brilliant, weird, funny and painful, and a total antidote to mainstream, slick, rich-kid Beverley Hills 90210 high school glamour, so of course, hardly anybody watched it, the network didn’t get it, and it was cancelled well before its time.

The Wonder Years

Six seasons (1988 – 1993)

Husband and wife team Neal Marlens and Carol Black created a classic in The Wonder Years, a coming-of-age story about Kevin, the youngest son of a suburban American family, growing up against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and the hippie movement. It’s fuelled by nostalgia and the sweet romantic yearnings of its young lead Kevin Arnold (played by Fred Savage, now a top comedy director-producer), but doesn’t gloss over life’s more serious moments. Never Have I Ever’s choice of John McEnroe as its wry adult narrator may well have been influenced by Daniel Stern’s role on The Wonder Years. It’s available to stream now on Hulu in the US.

Skins

7 seasons (2007 – 2013)

Not strictly a comedy, but with plenty of comedic moments, Skins has to be in the running for the best British teen show ever made. The first four seasons especially are filled with great writing, strong performances, and characters whose lives – and complicated love lives – are easy to invest in. It followed the students of a Bristol sixth form college through their A levels, giving it the chance to renew the cast every two years as the previous generation graduated/dropped out/ran away/were murdered. Like Freaks and Geeks, its cast of young actors, from Nicholas Hoult to Dev Patel, Joe Dempsie, Daniel Kaluuya, Jack O’Connell, Kaya Scodelario and more went on to very big things. Much more layered and satisfyingly weird than the reputation it was given by the British press as an orgy of sex, drugs and bad behaviour, it’s another must-watch.

Daria

Five seasons (1997 – 2001)

Developed from a character created for Mike Judge’s animated MTV comedy Beavis & Butthead, Daria Morgendorffer is a cynical 16-year-old with a gimlet eyed take on suburban US life. She’s a 90s icon with a monotone voice (provided by Tracy Grandstaff) and a wry take on her schoolmates, parents, and cheerleader sister Quinn. Her witty, dry animated series aired for five seasons plus feature-length TV specials, and is soon to have a new spin-off coming to Comedy Central, focused on Daria’s classmate Jodie’s travails in the modern workplace.

My So-Called Life

One season (1994 – 1995)

When My So-Called Life aired its only season on ABC in 1994, it was the anti-teen TV show. Muted and realist rather than upbeat and aspirational, it cast actual teenagers, not models, and ventured into areas avoided by many other teen dramas of the time: alcoholism, sex, domestic abuse… Its first-person narration from Claire Danes’ lead character gave it a distinctive voice, and influenced many shows to follow. It’s worth saying that My So-Called Life is a drama, not a comedy, and paints teenage life with a totally different colour palette to bright, satirical Never Have I Ever. Acknowledging that, it’s a cult favourite, and possible to trace a line from Devi’s love triangle with nerdy academic Ben and hot, popular Paxton, and MSCL’s Angela Chase’s love triangle with nerdy academic Brian and hot, popular Jordan (would that line continue all the way back to Pretty in Pink? Probably).

Kurtbastian one-shot - “The Pain” (Rated PG13)

While Sebastian evaluates new recruits for the Ice-plex's J.V. hockey team, one of his wannabes gets in hot water with Kurt when he cuts off a figure skater.

Tensions run high and secrets are revealed. (2093 words)

“Alright! Thank you so much, guys and gals, for showing up to this year’s hockey team tryouts!” Sebastian glides down the line of potential recruits, dropping pucks in front of them while he speaks. “It’s been a long three days of drills, but we’ve finally narrowed it down to you guys.” Sebastian stops to give the kids in front of him - holding their sticks at the ready, waiting for their chance to be unleashed and show their stuff - a stern once over. “You should be proud of yourselves. That’s a huge accomplishment.” They hold themselves a little straighter, a little taller for Sebastian saying that. “Before we begin, a little background for those of you who may not already know ...”

Sebastian knows a handful will already know what he’s about to say. These kids have been raised at this rink. They could skate before they could walk. Sebastian has seen a few of them grow up here. He’s been their junior coach for the past five years.

God. He’s only a teenager and already he feels like an old man.

“Westerville Ice-plex has four leagues – junior boys, junior girls, and our two co-ed top tiers, J.V. and Varsity. J.V. are the Ice Dragons and Varsity are the Fighting Titans. You guys are here to become … Dragons.” The boys and girls clap and high five one another. “The Westerville Ice Dragons are not just any team. We don’t just win tournaments and bring home trophies. We also do exhibitions, volunteer workshops, charity events, community service, highway cleanups, you name it. Becoming a member of this team isn’t only about your skills on the ice, it’s about who you are as a person. Yes, we have only one captain and one co-captain, but all of you are expected to be leaders. In order to stay on this team, we need to see community involvement outside of the rink, and we need to see good grades. If you need help in either of these areas, we have more than enough people here to help you. But if you start to lag without asking for help, you’ll be removed to second string. Is that understood?”

“Yes, coach,” the kids say, staggered between nervous swallows.

“90% of the players who have ever been on either the J.V. or Varsity team have received offers of scholarships to some of the best schools in the nation. Ice Dragons and Fighting Titans from the past three decades have attended every Ivy League school in the country. Our players are so sought after that one of the Titans’ best goalies received the offer of a full scholarship to Penn State, and he only played one season.”

“Wow.”

“That’s amazing!”

“Who is that, coach?”

“Oh, you’ve all seen him if you skate here regularly, you probably just don’t know it.” Sebastian smiles deviously. “We call him The Pain.”

“Why? Is he a jerk?” one girl scoffs.

“No,” Sebastian says with a hint of glower. “He’s the best goaltender we’ve ever had. Faster than lightning, almost superhuman fast. He can anticipate most any move. And he’s fearless. No one could get anything by him. That made him a pain in the ass,” Sebastian grumbles, acknowledging that that means he couldn’t get anything by him either. “Anyway, we have five spots opening up and seven of you, so obviously a few of you will not be making first string.”

“Make that eight.” Another boy, suited up and with stick in his hand, slides to a stop at the end of the line. “Sorry I’m late, coach. I had a little trouble making my way over here.” He jabs a thumb behind him, but Sebastian doesn’t follow it, focused on the boy who skidded in over fifteen minutes late as if that kind of behavior would be excused.

“You know, we value punctuality on this team,” Sebastian says, arms crossed, “so this doesn’t look good for you.”

“Sorry,” the boy says, not sounding all that sorry. “Like I said, not my fault.”

“Hey! Hey you!”

Sebastian looks over the boy’s shoulder when he hears his boyfriend’s voice, and even though he sounds madder than hell, Sebastian can’t help smiling.

“Hey, Kurt. What’s up?”

“Your little latecomer there almost knocked over a figure skater!”

Sebastian looks at the boy for a reaction. There’s really only one acceptable reaction in this situation … and the boy doesn’t give it.

“Well, they need to learn to get their fruity asses out of our way,” he says with a superior smirk.

Kurt slides to a stop – a hockey stop in his razor sharp figures - spraying the boy’s skates with snow, which makes him seethe. “They’re practicing in their section!” Kurt says, leaning in to talk into the cage of the boy’s helmet. “You have no right to cut them off! We’re sharing this rink until the other one’s resurfaced! No sport takes precedence on the ice here!”

“Uh, I’d check again,” the boy has the nerve to clap back, “because last I looked, hockey has the tallest trophy in the case after last Friday’s game.” He glances to the side, expecting support from the other hopefuls in line, but they’ve already started to back away.

Sebastian can see Kurt getting steadily angrier, but he manages to keep his cool. “Well then I’d get your eyes examined because technically, after last Sunday’s competition, figure skating has the tallest trophy. I know because it happens to be mine. And I’m telling you that no sport here takes precedence on the ice. You knock over one of my skaters, and you’re out of this rink. I don’t care who you are or what team you’re on. And there isn’t a single coach here, junior or senior, who won’t back me up.”

The boy rolls his eyes but Kurt doesn’t let that rile him. He looks at Sebastian, staring back at the two of them with hard eyes, and says, “Keep your boy in check, Smythe. This is the only warning he gets.”

Sebastian nods. “You got it.”

Kurt turns on his blades and heads across the ice.

“That’s right,” the boy mutters. “Sashay away.” The boy flips his stick and taps the heel on the ice, knocking one of the pucks into another. He takes a peek around. No one’s paying attention to him. Coach is watching that obnoxious figure skater skate towards the penalty box while the other kids trying out for the team have clustered as far away from him as possible, not even trying to be inconspicuous.

Then there’re the line of pucks, sitting on the ice, in perfect firing formation.

At that moment, he decides that there’s no reason for him to be the outcast here. He didn’t do anything wrong. Everyone knows that hockey is where the money is for any rink worth a shit.

So he’s not about to be told off by a frickin’ figure skater.

Sebastian doesn’t know how Kurt sees it. Sebastian didn’t see it, too preoccupied with watching Kurt skate and trying to decide how best to handle his newest troublemaker. The odds of him being Ice Dragon material are slim, but he can’t just cut him loose now. But what if he causes problems later on? With that attitude, how the heck did he even make it this far?

However Kurt sees it, thank God he does, because a hit from a puck at speed anywhere on the body can devastate a skater, hence the full body armor hockey players wear during every game. Rink management even requires that their hockey players wear skates with Kevlar guards after one player’s career ended when a shot to the ankle shattered the bone. A strike anywhere on Kurt’s body could be a career ender, and if not, the amount of time it would take him to recover might derail him regardless.

But Kurt swivels out of the way just in time to avoid a puck to the thigh. He storms back over, a glare in his blue eyes that would stop a charging bull elephant in its tracks.

The boy chuckles nervously, backing away in surrender with arms raised. “Oops! Sorry about that. That one just slipped.”

“I’ll bet,” Kurt says. Sebastian arrives at his side in a second without any idea if he skated over to hold Kurt back, or to hold the kid down while Kurt punches him. “Shooting a puck with the intention of striking another skater is grounds for immediate disqualification from any team at Westerville Ice-plex. Get off the ice.”

The boy’s smile turns into a scowl. “What!?”

“He’s right,” Sebastian says. “Get to stepping. Now.”

“No way! This is bogus!!”

“No, what’s bogus is you thinking you could assault another skater and get away with it,” Kurt says. “You’re lucky I don’t report you to the police!” The boy looks relieved until Kurt adds, “But I am reporting you to the league. Don’t expect to skate in competition any time soon.”

The boy stares for a second, mouth agape, searching for the right cutting remark that won’t just win his argument, but get him on the team. That would show up that stupid figure skater! It would shut him up real good. But, in the end, he decides it’s not worth it. There are other teams, better teams … somewhere. He’s sure that there’s no way they can make good on their threat. They can’t keep him from playing.

He’ll show them.

“Whatevs,” he says, taking his stick and skating off the ice. He cuts through the penalty box to avoid coming into contact with anyone else. Sebastian watches him go until he disappears into the lobby and he can’t see him anymore.

“I gotta send my kids to the other rink.” Kurt gives Sebastian a reassuring smile and skates away. Sebastian sighs. More than likely, that kid gets his attitude problem from his parents. Parents, in Sebastian’s experience, tend to be more aggressive than the players, and that’s really sad, because a player like that boy, with an admittedly kickass slapshot, might end up benched because he can’t get his ego or his attitude under control. But Lord knows he probably didn’t start out that way the first time he strapped on skates.

Sebastian’s mom used to say there are no bad kids, only bad parents. He used to think that was a stupid excuse, that everyone is responsible for their own actions no matter what their age. But the more bad kids he meets, the more bad parents he sees.

The more the saying fits.

“Now that that’s over, let’s get these tryouts rolling, shall we?” Sebastian says, finding his upbeat attitude again. “You’re going to give me ten laps around the ice. You’re going to give me twenty pushups on your fists. You’re going to show me your best shoot the duck, Russian lunges, belly slides, knees spins, and edge work. And after you’ve warmed up, you’ll be evaluated - individually and as a group. This isn’t the time for showboating. Your best chance at earning a spot is by showing us you’re willing to put the good of the team above yourselves. We wanna see how you handle the puck, how you pass, how you shoot, and how you approach the goal.”

One girl raises her hand, and Sebastian points to her. “Yes?”

“You keep saying we, coach.”

“Yup,” Sebastian says. “We.”

“Is that like … the royal we?”

“He would say so.”

The boys and girls look around, but they don’t see anyone else except a spattering of figure skaters exiting the ice, and Kurt, circling back their way.

“Who’s he coach?”

“Yeah. Who’s gonna evaluate us?”

Kurt stops beside Sebastian, giving the boys and girls a bright new smile and a wave, as if the tension from before had never happened.

“Hey, guys,” he says. “Let’s get down to business.”

The kids look down the line at one another, confused, but Sebastian puts a hand on Kurt’s shoulder and smiles.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I believe you all know Kurt Hummel - ten time gold medalist and the pride of Westerville Ice-plex.”

Sebastian hands Kurt his hockey stick. He weighs it in his hands, then flips it around his wrist. It spins three times before he catches it, slapping the blade on the ice. Only then do the kids notice that Kurt has changed out of his figures and into hockey skates.

“But around here,” Sebastian continues, “we call him The Pain.”

Sleepaway Camp Employment Woes

So I’ve been wanting to work at a sleepaway camp for forever, I’ve just never found the right summer to do it, as most camps ask you have at least 1 year of college under you. Now that I’m ending my sophomore year of college and have some good life experience under me, I thought this summer was going to be the perfect summer to go. Last summer I started researching camps for this summer, and narrowed it down to about 6. 6 amazing camps (for the sake of confidentiality, I will not be naming the camps). However, towards the end I only went to interview with 5. I thought, okay, it’s always been relatively easy for me to gain jobs, and I have a lot of skill and admiration for kids - let’s see how this goes! Maybe I’ll get picked by a few of my top choices!

Wrong.

Now, this isn’t a hate post. I still love all of these camps and if I don’t end up getting employed by any of these camps, I’ll consider re-applying next year. But spoiler alert, it’s been 5 camps later and I still haven’t been hired.

Before I explain how the sleepaway camps have been going, I’m going to explain how I believe working at a sleepaway camp will help me towards my career of child life specialist.

These kids go to camp for anywhere from a week to 7 weeks, some of them have been going a specific camp since they were of the age to, and some are there for the first time. Like a child life specialist, camp counselors are there to help you have a positive experience, and campers learn from their counselors. They’re also there to comfort them when they fall down in soccer class, they’re there for them when they miss their home and want to leave, they’re there for them when they get frustrated at today’s activity because they don’t understand how to play or they get too competitive and end up having a bad time, they’re there for them. My friends keep asking me, Sami, why a sleepaway camp? Why not the day camp near you? The thing about day camps is that you get to make these connections with the kids, but at the end of the day, they go home. They go home and you go home and your life is resumed until you go back the next day. At a sleepaway camp, you are home. You’re there with the kids 24/7, and you get to learn their likes, their dislikes, how they fall asleep, their favorite foods, their hopes, their dreams, their aspirations - sure, you can learn this from day camp experience too, but I feel like working at a sleepaway camp is a lot more meaningful if you’re looking to work directly with children.

Camp #1 was in New York. Amazing camp. It’s an all-girl camp. I enjoyed what they stood for, I had a nice talk with the director, I thought I had a pretty decent chance. Nah. rejected. I was sad, and confused. I think I actually cried a little bit. This was the first camp I had researched last summer and I was so excited to have an interview with them. But I quickly put my head up and went on to the next camp interview I had lined up.

Camp 2, another all-girls camp, but this time in New Hampshire. Again, I felt really confident and had a great talk with her. I loved the camp. However, I was worried because our interview only lasted about 12 minutes. Just a few days later, another rejection. “We encourage you to apply back when you have more professional experience.” This one I was kind of saddened by. The thing about me is that I have camp experience and experience working with children, and I’ve even worked for Walt Disney World, but I think what threw people off is that all my experience was from high school, and high school for me was 2 years ago. I still carry all those experiences with me, I haven’t forgotten them, so I was confused, confused on why I kept getting rejected. I shrugged it off and went onto the next camp interview.

Camp 3 took awhile to get back to me, because they just so happened to be away in Europe recruiting people, so it would be about 2 weeks until we talked. (I’m not gonna type up a separate post about this - about 3 weeks later I got a call from them, this interview lasted 8 minutes, they told me if I didn’t get anything by next week, it was a no from them - no email, no nothing. It was a really nice camp but it was unfortunately not the one for me). I had talked to camp 4 while this was going on - this camp was so good, guys. So good. I think I liked them just as much as I had liked camp 1, maybe even more. The director and I had an amazing connection, and we had an interview that lasted an hour and a half and every story I told her, we found a way to connect it to camp life. I was like, this is it, I’m getting in. But nah. Life doesn’t work that way. Unfortunately, I got yet another rejection. I was heartbroken. I haven’t even responded to the email because I’m so sad and hurt that we spent all this time bonding over the phone just to be rejected.

Now, this was going to be my last camp. I had a 5th camp application in, but hadn’t gotten a response. I was just about done with the heartbreak that went into this whole process. I thought about how most of the websites had said they re-hire 90% of their past summer employees, so that basically made me 10% likely to be hired as a newbie, maybe 5% since some of the 10% is international new hires. But then, it happened - I got an interview with camp #5! This is an amazing co-ed camp in Pennsylvania all about self-love, learning to encourage and support yourself and others, and so much more. I was so excited to hear it, this camp was my silver lining, a camp I had been really enjoyed looking over. I had a sort of pre-interview with them on Wednesday and I think it went really well, this was the first director to acknowledge that yes, I worked for Disney in just food, but wow, you worked in Disney! Now I just have to wait for my references to get back to them and they’ll schedule another interview!

Phylax Part1 ch.1 Young

Three months later.

“You ready for this kid?” Tony’s voice rang through her earpiece.

“Go big or go home, boss,” Bennett smiled, answering over her com. It was the grand opening of the Stark Expo and Tony planned on making it the event of the century. Even with 90 years left in this century.

“You sure this isn’t too extreme?” he questioned.

"For anyone else, yeah. For you jumping out of a plane might be a bit lowkey,” the blonde pressed herself against the wall of the small changing room as another of the “dance team” girls bumped her. This one too was wearing next to nothing. That makes 5 in the last half hour. They might have been comfortable in the small changing room, stripping in front of each other but it was completely out of her comfort zone.

Tony insisted they had to have a member of the security team in the room at all times as well as posted outside the doors. As there was only one female member of the security that job got handed to Bennett. “The twenty “Rockettes” running around me and stretching out before your big show, that might qualify as extreme."

“Not enjoying the show? I chose that job especially for you. We could trade spots.” Tony's voice held a touch of laughter in his tone. “Seriously not one of them is hot in your book?”

“Not the time, boss.”

“There is one?” He perked up. “We will compare notes after the show.”

“Just get ready to jump,” she said, checking the time. “Alright ladies. Showtime.”

Bennett, Pepper, and Happy stood backstage as the show started. Music blared and the girls began their routine. Tony touched down on the rotating platform with perfect timing. The suit started to remove itself piece by piece. By the time it finished a few rotations, Tony stood in a tux with his trademark smile as the girls struck their final pose.

After Tony’s speech welcoming everyone to the Stark Expo people began to mix and mingle. Finally pushing through the press to his car with Happy’s help they made it outside. “So kid how was it?”

“Your speech?” He nodded. “It was great except that whole part about no one being man enough to go toe to toe with you. If I remember right last time we went toe to toe you ended up face down on the canvas with my knee in your spine.”

“Coming from anybody else, that might sound kinky,” Tony quirked an eyebrow, then let out an involuntary shutter.

“Look what we got here, the new model,” Happy nodded toward the car with a too bright smile.

Tony looked the car over but also the woman leaning against it, “does she come with the car?”

“I certainly hope so. Hi,” Happy introduced himself. Tony followed immediately after,

The woman was a U.S. Marshal and was there to make sure Tony was at his hearing the next morning. He had to be in D.C. by 9 a.m.

“Happy you wanna take Tony or go brief Pepper?” Bennett asked, preparing for a long night babysitting Tony.

“No, no, no, you have to be at this club,” Tony pulled a business card from his jacket pocket, “in 45 minutes.” He reached in the back seat of the car. “Your Ducati is waiting for you at the south entrance.” He handed over her helmet, keys, t-shirt and leather jacket. “Some guy named Jax said he would meet you there?”

“Are you sure it was Jax?” Bennett asked. Tony gave a nod in reply. “Did he say why? Are you sure you don’t need me boss?” she flipped the visor on the helmet back and forth as she spoke.

“Happy and Pepper can handle this one. Stop that, you’re gonna break it,” he swatted her hand to stop her fidgeting. “When I get back though we need some Tony and Benn hang time. I have something to show you in the lab.” He climbed in the car.

“Yes sir,” she gave a two finger salute before heading toward her bike.

“Benn?” He called and she turned, “be safe.”

She sent a “Stark smirk” back “always am. Drive safe.” With that he and Happy sped off. Why would Jax want to meet her? They might still be friends but she wouldn’t expect it. After...

She made her way around the corner unbuttoning the stuffy white shirt and blazer, stripping down to the tank top underneath. She pulled on the t-shirt and the matching button up. After getting to the south entrance she threw on her jacket. Her bike was sitting in the closest parking spot, polished and gleaming. A custom Ducati, red with black and silver trim. A birthday present from Tony, which meant he had customized it even more than from the factory. She wadded up the shirt and blazer and shoved them in the storage compartment under the seat.

The engine roared to life at the first kick. She revved the throttle a couple times, catching the attention of a brunette a couple cars down. Bennett slid on her helmet, giving the woman a shy smile before peeling out of the parking lot speeding up town to the club.

The music pulsed and the lights flashed as she approached the entrance for the private club. She had to wait in line for a few minutes before she got to the bouncer at the door. “Party name?” He asked.

“Jaxon Hennings.” Bennet replied fidgeting with her helmet.

“Mr. Hennings,” the man gave a broad smile, “yes, a party of six. Your name?”

“Bennett Lancaster.” He gestured, her through directing her to one of the more private booths in the back.

Bennett met Jaxon Hennings on their first day of college. Co-ed dorms. They had private rooms that unfortunately shared a bathroom. As might be expected when rooming two 18-year-olds of the opposite sex that close, the first thing he did was try to flirt. She tried to let him down easy by telling him he wasn’t her type. He didn’t take it as easy as she had hoped. A small fight over the shared space of the bathroom broke out the first weekend of their college experience. It quickly escalated to an all out war.

The adversity between the two was palpable. He “accidently” walked in while she was in the shower so in return she taped the sink faucet to squirt him in the face. He put honey on the door knob. She superglued his toothbrush, toothpaste, razor and shaving cream to his drawer in the vanity. It only intensified when classes started and they shared most of their classes. Pranks became more vicious and spread to the others bedroom not just the shared space of the bathroom. A month into the school year found most of Bennett’s wardrobe shredded and Jaxon’s meals for a week laced with something. Melatonin was the nicest, laxatives were a given.

Jaxon shuffled across the quad after Intro to Economics one afternoon at the beginning of October. It had been a hard class that day, he could feel the headache coming on. The sound of giggling came from the steps in front of the cafe. He looked over to find Bennett talking to two other girls. Bennett wore a lopsided smile as they talked. Bennett focused most of her attention on her blonde companion rather than the brunette. The blonde reached out brushing the short bangs out of Benn’s face. Even though the locks were too short to actually fall in her face and her hair was gelled to perfection. She took long enough in the mornings. Especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when she had Latin class.

He looked the girl over trying to remember the girl's name. It took a few minutes but he remembered, Alex, a senior. As they sat talking several people stopped to greet Bennett. She seemed to attract people without trying. She, however, was focused solely on Alex. Jaxon walked to their dorm with a plan, a plan that would be mutually beneficial.

That evening Bennett entered their dorm only to find Jaxon sitting on her bed a smug smile on his face. “So, not your type? What exactly is your type?”

“I don’t have time for your crap today, Jaxon. We take the same classes, don’t you have as much homework as I do?” she dropped her bag by the edge of the desk.

“Of course, that doesn’t mean I am going to do it,” he followed her sitting on the desk. “So how do you feel about redheads?” The blonde rolled her eyes and pulled out her psych book. Trying to block her roommate out. “Nah, I bet you are into blondes. Yeah blonde hair and green eyes.” He hopped down and walked a few paces back and forth behind the girl. “Shorter side, I think. Curls.” Bennett turned to face him. He looked like the cat that ate the canary. “Nice rack? Am I warm?”

“I...”She shot him a glare, “what’s it to you?”

“I have seen you talk to Alex several times but I wasn’t sure until today, upperclassmen nice.” He stopped as if distracted by a thought. “Is that why you took that class, more upperclassmen?”

“A basic concept of Latin roots can help you in several fields of study. All the medical fields, for instance. Bonus is that you don’t take it.” She turned back to the book on her desk.

“But we both know you aren’t going into medical, you are getting a degree in general ed. And only because you have to, to stay in that security school,” he put his hand over the page she was reading.

Bennett slammed the book closed on his hand, “Latin also tends to make you sound smart. Headed to Latin sounds a whole lot better than headed to burger flipping 101 or whatever you take.”

“Hey I was gonna help with your Alex problem but if that's how you're gonna be?” Shaking out his hands as he began walking toward the door.

“I don’t have a problem,” her voice came out soft.

He took that as his invitation to start the conversation again. “Then why haven’t you asked her out?” When she didn’t respond he continued. “Scared? Don’t know how? She wants you too.” A devious smile crossed his face “I can help you.”

Bennett looked him up and down, “what’s it gonna cost me?”

“For some reason it’s starting the conversations that I have problems with, I have been told I come off as abrasive.”

“Can’t imagine why,” she rolled her eyes.

He shrugged as if it truly were a mystery. “But everyone seems to like you, so you teach me your charm and I will teach you mine. Be my wingman, I’ll be yours. Truce.” He held out a hand.

Reluctantly she shook his hand, “Truce.” Within three days Bennett had a date with Alex and she was helping Jaxon get rid of his first one night stand.

From that point on Jaxon and Bennett were inseparable. They quickly became best friends. Their morals and opinions didn’t always line up but that was understandable.

His parents were overjoyed when he told them he was bringing a girl home for Thanksgiving break their junior year. He thought it was fun to only refer to her as his best friend, to his parents, or Benn or Bennie. Never by a gender specific pronoun.

The drive, although short, was exhausting. Jaxon had been teasing her the whole time about this guy at school that could not take a hint. By the time they arrived she had had enough. As soon as he killed the car she tackled him, pushing him out his door. They rolled across the yard laughing and calling each other childish names. Throwing leaves in each other's faces and wrestling, until the girl finally locked in a chokehold making him tap. “Okay, Benn, you win.”

“Always do,” she held a hand out helping him up. As they dusted off their attention was drawn to the front door of the mansion, they had an audience. There on the front porch steps to the massive mansion stood Jax’s mother, father, and little sister, Emily.

Bennett made her way through the throng of people to the private tables toward the back of the club. Tucked the corner she found Jax, bleached blonde hair, purple button down shirt, silver tie. Over the top. How do I attract the eccentric types? She questioned herself. First Jax and now Tony.

“Bennie," he practically jumped over the table. Picking her up in a bear hug. “I am so sorry, Benn. I know Emily. I should have seen the signs. I just really hoped she would be different with you.”

“It’s not your fault, Jax. I missed all the signs too.” They shared a smile, “so still friends?”

“Are you kidding,” he smirked, “you can’t get rid of me if you tried.” He turned back to the table, pushing one of the other guys there out of his seat so she could sit.

Of the four other people sitting at the table one was Jax’s wife, Jordan. She had wrapped Bennett in a warm hug, no words just a hug of understanding. As they hugged Bennett felt an influx of several hormones that were high, she searched her friend for a reason, finally finding it, a second heartbeat.

Caleb, another of their friends from college, greeted her sitting directly to her left. Jax’s friend and business partner Martin occupied the next seat from him.

The seat directly across from Bennett was occupied by a woman with dark hair and even darker eyes. She was attractive by anyone’s standards. She had smiled when Jaxon introduced them, a thousand watt smile. Mariam, the head of marketing for the software division of Advanced Idea Mechanics. She was interested to hear that Bennett worked closely with Tony Stark.

Stories were shared around the table and Jax never let anyone’s glass sit empty. “So here we are, all just turned 21 at the strip club,” Jax continued the story. Bennett buried her face in her hands. “We all decide that Benn needs to experience more of life. She has refused to pay attention to any of the women there. Now as an older brother with her talking to my little sister I respect that. As her best friend I can’t let her leave without having some fun. So me and the other guys shell out a ton of money for Benn to have a private dance. They are back there for a solid 30 minutes so we are all glad that she is finally enjoying something. We watch the hall closely to see when she comes out. Benn and the stripper come out of the room, the stripper wearing Benn’s jacket. She leans in, gives Benn a hug before giving back the jacket and walking the other way. Benn gets back out to us and tells us they talked the entire time. We paid for a private dance and instead Benn spends 30 minutes making sure the woman is comfortable and discussing what this woman wants to do with her life and future.”

“I will have you know, her name is Holly not “the stripper,” and she is currently studying to be a surgeon.” Bennett smiled as she took another sip of her drink.

Martin left after a few hours claiming a business meeting in the morning to be the reason, not the busty blonde by the bar that he had been eyeing all night. Caleb went to the dance floor to try his luck with a group of college girls.

When Mariam left to get a fresh drink Jaxon turned serious. “So Benn, Jordan and I wanted to tell you something,” She knew what was coming. “We’re pregnant.” Their faces were beaming. The sodas and waters Jordan had been drinking all night had solidified what she had felt earlier. She was thrilled for them, even if it did sting a bit.

If she were different, if Emily were different, if things had just worked out different; they would be hearing this news together and she would be looking forward to being an aunt. Now though she would just be “dad’s crazy friend,” if she even got to be there.

“We still want you around. We want you to be involved in the baby’s life.” Jax continued almost as if he had read her mind. “You were my wingman and my best friend long before Emily screwed up. I saw you first.”

She let out a soft laugh, “I will be there as much as I can. I am so happy for you guys.”

He reached out grabbing Jordan’s hand giving it a gentle squeeze.

Mariam came back to the table with a drink in hand for herself and a refill for Bennett.

Jaxon and Jordan went to dance leaving Bennett and Mariam alone.

“So how many of those do you need for me to convince you to dance?” Mariam’s smile was bewitching.

Bennett could have easily been ensnared by the sight if not for her recent clash with reality. “I am afraid there isn’t enough alcohol in the world to convince me to dance.” Mariam’s shoulders fell and her smile faltered before she forced a fake in its place. “But I am open to some conversation and maybe a new friend.”

She met Bennett’s eyes again, “a new friend might be nice.” Her smile diminished in size slightly but it was genuine again. “Especially if this new friend has connections to Tony Stark,” the playfulness in her tone made Bennett laugh.

“I refuse to be a part in any sort of espionage against my boss or his company.”

Mariam joined in the laughter, “I guess I will just have to settle for friendly banter then and find another partner in crime against Stark.”

Friendly banter was the course of the evening. A great deal of the night was spent with the four of them at the table talking and trying to embarrass one another. Periodically it would be just two at the table as the others went to dance.

At last call Bennett found a taxi for Jaxon, Jordan, and Mariam. She made sure they were all loaded and the drivers had the correct addresses before cranking her bike to head back to Stark tower.

The last three months had been hell. Today though had been a good day. She hadn’t lost everything with Emily. She wasn’t going through it all alone. She still had Jax, her best friend, and Tony. Everyone needs a Tony.

Media bias against Kavanaugh is overwhelming The Hill ^ | 10/03/18 | JOE CONCHA It's hard to remember a time when both sides of the aisle have been this pissed off before on one topic.In this case, we're obviously talking about the farcical confirmation process surrounding Brett Kavanaugh, who went from Supreme Court shoo-in to perhaps the most divisive figure in the country outside of anyone named Trump.

This whole sordid affair is a farce with one goal in mind: Paint the Republican Party as anti-women, anti-sexual assault, anti-#MeToo.From a general political perspective, it's almost irrelevant if Kavanaugh gets confirmed.

The damage is already done when the president and many in his party, including the Lindsey Grahams and Chuck Grassleys of the world, defend Kavanaugh's right to due process while questioning multiple claims made against him from more than 30 years ago that one person has yet to corroborate.

Most importantly, a horrific precedent is now set for anyone even thinking of serving in government or on a high court: A world where anyone can be accused of anything that occurred decades ago without providing evidence or any corroborating witnesses to support the claim — all while it destroys that person’s career and family as a consequence.

What sane person would ever want to get into public service if these are the new ground rules?Oh, but Kavanaugh drank beer in high school, drank in college.

The Times story was co-written by Emily Bazelon. She wrote on Twitter shortly after Kavanaugh was nominated that she was "strongly" disassociating herself from the nominee because "he's a 5th vote for a hard-right turn on voting rights.After Bazelon's tweet was discovered and made the rounds on social media, the Times was forced to admit through a spokesperson that she is "not a news reporter.

"Times' spokeswoman Eileen Murphy said Tuesday the Bazelon’s “role in this story was to help colleagues in the newsroom gather public documents in New Haven, where Emily is based. In retrospect, editors should have used a newsroom reporter for that assignment.

"On the retraction front, things were much worse at USA Today last Friday. That's when the paper actually decided to run an op-ed by sports columnist Erik Brady that implied Kavanaugh was a pedophile who should not coach his daughter's basketball team because he couldn't be trusted around young girls."The U.S. Senate may yet confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, but he should stay off basketball courts for now when kids are around," he wrote.

"The nation is deeply divided," he added. "Sometimes it feels like we don’t agree on anything anymore. But credibly accused sex offenders should not coach youth basketball, girls or boys, without deeper investigation.

Can’t we all agree on that?"After considerable blowback, USA Today took down those passages instead of nuking the column altogether, stating:"Our sports writer wrote an opinion column but didn’t mean to malign the Supreme Court nominee.

"According to USA Today, the writer didn't mean to malign Kavanaugh. He just inferred that Kavanaugh was a potential pedophile, without a scintilla of evidence, who can't ever go within 50 yards of his own daughters' school again.

There are other examples of media malfeasance from the past two weeks, but you get the point.There's a reason the country is so angry right now.The left and the right see Kavanaugh as either a sexual predator and alcoholic, or a victim of a corrupt political system and/or an overwhelmingly biased media.

Those looking for truth, for objectivity, for the story to be presented through a non-partisan lens are mostly left empty-handed. Most quarters of media have taken a side here as noted by staunch Trump critic Joe Scarborough on MSNBC on Wednesday morning.

“The media coverage of this has been so one-sided, it has been so biased,” Scarborough said on "Morning Joe.""[The media's] presumption from the beginning has been that every single allegation made against the judge was true.

”Once the Kavanaugh confirmation mercifully ends one way or the other, the stench of this rancid affair still will not go away for a very long time when it comes to remotely trusting political institutions or the Fourth Estate.
