🌿 A Sinner's Retribution
One could always wash blood off their hands, but no matter what he did, he could never will away the memories of that night.
He recalls the pain vividly, far beyond a physical sense. His transformation was overwhelming, unfathomable, revolting. At one point, Hyakugan Maoh's castle fell silent, void of life not unlike his eyes. Suffering a deep wound on his stomach, it was then when he would have settled by her side... but his hatred at the time ran so deep that he absolutely refused to die looking like a demon.
And so he stumbled out the castle all the way to a facility by the village borders that distributed power limiters, moving out of pure spite and adrenaline.
But it wasn't long before the blood loss became too much on his slow journey back, and he collapsed on a forest path, in the rain, adding salt to the wound of failing her a second time that night.
That was the end— or so he thought.
Fate had decided to spare his life then. Never would he have imagined getting to where he is now.
Things are... better. Getting better at least, as he'd like to believe. He smiles, even with the horrified faces and screams of the villagers and demons he had slaughtered haunting him from time to time, even to this day.
Like a constant reminder. A sinner's retribution.

@r3loaded asked → ❝ Why men throw their lives away attacking an armed witcher… I'll never know. Something about my face? ❞ (witcher verse obviously) ( src. / accepting. )
'Easy target' would be a poor way to describe Sanzo indeed, though Hakkai sympathizes with the poor souls who throw their lives in the ring to try their might against him. There's something about pride that forbids its closest keepers from backing down even when they know they're at a disadvantage—though the situation only comes up against people who were somehow stupid enough to cross Sanzo to begin with, and Hakkai likes to think he would be smarter than that even if he'd never met Sanzo.
He crouches down to inspect the clothing and belongings on the recently-made corpse, easily and swiftly unsecuring the man's coin pouch in a single, callous motion. The jokes at his expense for his practicality still roll in even now, but Hakkai mostly ignores them in favor of doing what the others either don't care enough or find too unsavory to do.
"It's easy to fall into the trap of believing that you'll be the one who manages to finish the job," he muses, lightly patting down the usual areas for hidden pockets before standing back up, having found nothing more of note. "There are a lot of people like that. Men who've ridden horses once or twice often fashion themselves horse-racing champions, just as men who've learned how to properly swing a sword fashion themselves master swordsmen."
Hakkai smiles, expression filled with no small amount of cheek as he dangles the coin purse by its strings, closely inspecting its weight.
Only a few coins, he thinks, but more than the others. It's not really a profitable business, being attacked by wandering brigands, but it's enough to fill the in-betweens of Sanzo's jobs, when money is running short enough that things start feeling a little desperate. The recent addition of Gojyo to their group of travellers has seen a positive turn in their funds, thanks to the man's proclivity for making money through his gambling, but Hakkai has always found it hard to shake habits.
He drops the coin purse unceremoniously into his own bag to deal with later, then brushes himself off.
"I think you tend to come off as if you're giving those sorts of men a challenge." He'd taken a brief moment to think before speaking again, still wearing a sliver of his amusement on his face. "Your indifference hurts their poor egos. Well, and you do have a very punchable face to begin with. Hahaha."
Hakkai scans the four bodies once more, though he'd inspected them rather thoroughly. There's never any harm in making sure—or so he'd once told Goku, when the teenager had voiced impatient complaints about his corpse-robbing tendencies.
"In any case, we'd better head back. With any luck, Gojyo and Goku will have managed to get the fire going." He leaves that sentence for a beat, then begins walking back in the direction of their camp—swiftly and suddenly, offering up an explanation for the urgency as he does. "Actually, it would be best if we hurried, knowing those two..."

For @gentrychild’s ask: “For the ask game, modern AU of Saiyuki, please. ^^” I already answered that one, but it was so good that I had to do a second one. Zero regrets! Second up is the Yakuza AU:
Genjyo Sanzou is the 31th head of the Sanzou yakuza group.
Hakkai is an underground doctor. He works for the Sanzou group because their lawyers got him out of jail for mass murder due to lack of evidence. (Hakkai was totally guilty. His dear Kanan died in this AU, too, and Hakkai took revenge.)
Gojyo is a biker who makes a pretense of being independent but pretty much runs with the Sanzou group.
The Minus Wave is an extremely addictive drug that drives people violently insane. Sanzou’s yakuza group refuses to allow drug-dealing in their territory, so Sanzou has been hunting down the culprits.
The “Journey to the West” is a territory fight over the western part of the city with the Yokai Yakuza Group.
Goku was human trafficked and used as test subject for drugs. Sanzou found Goku locked up in shipping container. When they opened the container, Goku took down fifty of Sanzou’s guys in a mad rage. Goku had amnesia and was too feral for an ordinary orphanage to handle. Sanzou took Goku in and promised to help him hunt down the drug dealers and find out about his forgotten past.
Bonus: Tokitoh from Wild Adaptor (by the same mangaka) was imprisoned alongside Goku and they were good friends before they lost their memories of each other.

Saiyuki Reload: Zeroin - We Need More Goku (Review/Analysis)
youtube
By: Peggy Sue Wood | @pswediting
Saiyuki is a series near and dear to my heart. The original anime and its several seasons, movie, and OVAs are all top tear action anime with deep stories that I obsessed over in high school (and now, as an adult). So, when I scrolled through MAL’s (MyAnimeList) Winter 2022 anime lists last season, I literally screamed in excitement upon seeing Saiyuki Reload: Zeroin on the list. This anime aired just a few days ago on 6 Jan. 2022 and is a remake of the Saiyuki Reload Gunlock season, which covered the last manga arc “Even a Worm.”
Since only the first episode is out, I don’t know if this adaptation will be entirely faithful. It may become a FMA: Brotherhood type-remake or it may be entirely different--who knows? Honestly, I’m not too sure it matters as I firmly believe that adaptations are, in many ways, separate works from their source material because of the many people working on them and the necessary differences that come with the change in mediums from print to animation. Essentially, I treat it like the same world, but different versions… a multiverse for each series adaptation, you could say.
With that note, I’m so happy at the revival of this series. I hope that more comes out--particularly more of Goku’s story as he continues to grow. Now, that may or may not be in this series (it was, a little, in the prior edition), but if it isn’t, I hope the series drums up enough fandom interest to inspire further remakes and additions to the Saiyuki animated collection.
Much of the original series left Goku’s history in and with heaven hinted toward, but undeveloped or underdeveloped. We get more of it in later seasons (and a full re-do in three episodes of Saiyuki Gunlock Blast), but that shortens it by a lot. This kind of works on me because all of the other main characters get a pretty solid look at what has led them to where they are now. (And even the antagonists in one offs seem to get more than Goku most of the time.) The characters also get closure to these traumas or the chance to show that they’re making significant progress in working past the trauma.
As a quick review:
Source: Screenshot from https://saiyuki.fandom.com/wiki/Characters
Gojyo is a half-demon and has had a traumatizing childhood as a result of being not just a half-demon but one born from an affair. His stepmother heavily abused him and his brother ended up killing her before Gokyo’s eyes to protect him. However, said brother then left the still young Gojyo behind as he was unable to deal with his own trauma.
Sanzo was an orphan raised by monks and grew up to become the gun-wielding Sutra-wearing monk/priest we know today as the leader of the party. His life has been in the priesthood and he’s working past the loss of his mentor and father figure.
Hakkai--the seemingly most mild of the group--brutally lost his wife (we’re not mentioning the incest thing of the manga), murdered a LOT of people/demons and became a demon himself… also, he found jeep and adopted the cat-dragon-car creature.
AND GOKU? Well, that info you have to piece together over several seasons and specials before finally getting the episodes that explanation what happened in heaven that lead to his 500 year imprisonment on Earth. But the short episodes in question went by so quickly that you barely get to see how traumatic all of these experiences must have been for the ‘youngest’ member of the cast. (I highly recommend watching the Saiyuki Gunlock Blast re-make of the episodes and OVAs rather than the early 2000s version or the Saiyuki Gaiden OVAs as the updated art looks better and is a cohesive review. I believe the Blast episodes are Episodes 3 through 6.)
With the other characters, you’ve had time to see the developing depth of their experiences and how that has shaped the people they are today. Especially with the Burial OVAs and the last season of Saiyuki Reload Gunlock season for Sanzo, Gojyo and Hakkai’s characters.
The OVAs especially develop Gojyo and Hakkai’s relationship, Sanzo’s past, and Goku became so attached to Sanzo after being picked up by the priest.
However, the OVAs leave a lot to be desired for Goku’s character arc.
I know that some argue this is because Goku lost his memories from those times--so, unlike the others who carry their trauma daily and work to overcome it in the series, Goku is just carefree but that’s fundamentally incorrect based on the show itself. Rather, he probably carries the most out of all of them yet is expected to just get over it quickly because he’s ‘young.’
Why does this bother me?
Unlike the rest, Goku has not been reborn or had the chance to make new and lasting connections outside of these three people. (It is understood that Sha Gojyo, Genjo Sanzo, and Cho Hakkai are reincarnations of the three gods that used to be guardians of Goku in heaven and died saving him from wrongful execution.) These three don’t generally let him fully deal with the trauma he’s experienced, nor do they seem to try to understand it. Look, for example, at Saiyuki Reload episode 16 where Goku shows sincere fear and hatred of snow.
There is a legitimate reason for this hatred and fear. He was trapped for hundreds of years in a mountain-made cage with no one and nothing to hold onto. It snowed a lot and he was in very thin clothing for the entirety of his imprisonment.
How do the “adults” in his life deal with this?
They tell him to get over it because kids should love the snow and when that doesn’t immediately work they kind of force him to come out. Does it work? Sure, but that kind of trauma doesn’t just go away. For all intents and purposes, it seems to me like it’s just been buried. In fact, in the same episode, we see the current Goku is still affected by the snow (although not to the point of being unwilling to go outside).
Look also at Goku’s trauma response anytime that Sanzo gets seriously injured prior to the 2017 Saiyuki Gunlock Blast season. If his heaven-made limiter doesn’t just break, it is something he removes out of fear that he’ll lose the most important person in his life. (I mean, his mental state bottoms out nearly every time.) Probably because so far in his life he has lost every single person of importance to him--his bird friend, the three gods that took care of him (Konzen Douji, Field Marshal Tenpo, and General Kenren), plus Nataku Taishi.
Source: Screenshots from Saiyuki Gunlock Blast, Episode 6
Even if Goku doesn’t remember them totally, the trauma is still very much there. Sort of like infants who may not remember being abused but still have lasting trauma responses.
The response to Goku’s trauma being displayed? Put a limiter back on him. We’re not dealing with it or his mental health today.
By the way, we know that these traumas stick with him physically. After all, that seems to be the explanation for why Goku is always hungry. He is, by all understandings, basically immortal and super strong, but he starved for so long in that cell that upon release he’s extremely hungry and far weaker than he was in heaven. This also seems to explain why it is only in later seasons after he’s grown some and consumed a lot of food post-release, that Goku starts to get really strong again. Gojyo and Hakkai theorize that it’s Goku reaching puberty--and, maybe it is as he didn’t age physically in the cell--but, more than likely, it could also be simply that he’s starting to get his heaven-equalizing strength back now that he’s no longer constantly starving.
EVERYONE else gets a personal arc in the anime that expresses what has happened and how they are recovering from it. Gojyo gets to reconnect with his brother (though in the anime they still playfully act like they’re enemies--although post Blast-season his brother may be dead); Hakkai seems to find peace in his kikou jutsu and in caring for the group; Sanzo appears to find general comfort or, at least, fulfillment in his care of Goku and work. All of them are recovering, self-discovering, and growing from this journey (which, makes sense as Saiyuki is a loose adaptation of Journey to the West--a Chinese classic that serves as an allegory for enlightenment, human striving, and perseverance). Except for Goku, who--again--gets a semi-underdeveloped backstory that conveniently he hasn’t remembered in the multiple seasons of this anime.
Now, Goku gets some character development, but mostly seen in base-level maturing with age. However, he is still very much a child by comparison to the rest. Some attempts at developing his character in the anime are his repeated attempts at outside connections, which are 99/100 times crushed by the extenuating circumstances of the episode. In Season 1, this show of Goku being rejected leads to a powerful scene between Hakkai and Sanzo discussing how the limiters on Hakkai and Goku (and Gojyo’s red hair) mark them as yokai and how that affects their abilities to connect with the wider world… but, overall, the only one really struggling with it is Goku.
Hakkai rarely has or experiences the kind of rejection we see Goku undergo. And, Gojyo hits it off with so many women that it’s not as major of a factor for him. Sanzo, of course, is welcomed by pretty much everyone to the point that he’s annoyed because of his priestly status. Meanwhile, Goku is faced regularly with either rejection upon learning he’s a yokai, or complete betrayal or immediate loss by those that accept him.
The Gunlock Blast season really primes us for this development too as we saw the return of Nataku and the moments of both Goku and Nataku almost remembering, but not yet.
Okay, with that said...
I don’t think this season will do much with Goku’s character or back story. I’m not expecting it to as the original animated arc really focused more on Sanzo. I do, however, hope that this season revives the fandom's love and appreciation for one of the best-written adventure/action/comedy/dramas I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching (repeatedly). Maybe earlier seasons or manga arcs will get their own re-makes too.
I hope that with the revival and potential growth, we get more additions to the animated adaptations of this work. I’m sure 2017’s Saiyuki Reload Blast is probably why we’re getting this season--I just hope we don’t have to wait another 5 years to get the next one… or a movie or something.
But, what are your thoughts? Is what we have enough for Goku’s story or do you also think there could be more? Let me know, please!

I wasn’t ready for Saiyuki Zeroin ep.9
Before starting the episode I thought you know I am going back to my ‘funny’ commentary style, well I can’t this episode is too heavy to do that.
so here we go with a kinda seroius comment on this episode.
This is the heaviest so far, yes in my opinion even heavier than ep.7, the themes would hit hard in normal times but right now with what is happening in the world it’s really a punch in the guts.
Goku is making me sooooo proud, how he handled the situation is so mature minding his inner tourmoil and everything. The absence of Gojyo and Hakkai gives him space and I am glad.
I was very surprised by Pippi’s reaction when she realized that infact Goku is part of the Sanzo’s Ikkou. She somewhat accepted it, I was really impressed minding that her village could view them as enemies if they found out.
Goku coming in terms with the situation and somewhat reminding himself that “They have their own way to do things” at the darkest hour, when everything seems lost and the whole village is on fire made me tear up a little. (at first I thought that he was going berserker again and I was really scared)
Useless to say that then scene of the kiss broke my heart.
I really think (I might be wrong) that all of this gave Goku his own reason to go West, He saw the harsher truth about the ripercussion of the experiments for resurrection of Gyumao and wants to at least try to stop all of this. It’s a great step for him.
This episode made me realise what they mean in the wiki when they says that Hazel can be easy to manipulate. Sanzo on the otherhand is sharp as ever our intutive king, if his death glares could kill the general (?!) would have died 100 times over.
The final surprise was Gato crushing Hazel’s medallion, I was shocked in the good sense of it. This will be turning point for Hazel and Gato too I am pretty sure of it.
The fact that Gato stopped Hazel from doing something he would have probably regretted, minding his very questionable moral code, only for revenge sake confirms Gato to be the one who grounds Hazel and doesn’t let him be swept away by his ideology or feelings. They’re relationship is so very interesting to me.
well i fished ranting, I am sorry if you read till this point. goodbye.

Saiyuki Reload -Zeroin- 07
I usually don’t use these and just take random screenshots but it’s a nice image of Seiten Taisei and I didn’t wanna pass it up lol.
Besides, he’s shows up in this episode anyways.
Continuing from where the last episode left off, Goku had been attacked. When Sanzo finally snapped out of his shock he immediately crouched down close to Goku. He pulls out his gun and looks around for an enemy but there's no one. He notes he couldn't feel any human or demon presence.
He then suddenly remembered a time when he felt the same thing.
Sanzo remembered when he met Ukoku for the first time. Ukoku really does leave that weird feeling/impression on people, huh? Like, this guy is empty but not in a good way.
Gojyo and Hakkai finally arrive and saw what happened. Hakkai had to slap Sanzo to snap the latter out of it as Sanzo won't let go of Goku and Hakkai needed to try and heal him. Sanzo watched as Goku continued bleeding and something in him seem like it snapped cause he left saying he's going to kill whoever did this.
Hakkai then said the worst thing possible: that it's too late. He then tells Gojyo they still have a choice, a terribly risky one. Hakkai proposes they take off Goku's limiter so that the Seiten Taisei could heal his body. Doing that though means that they're at risk of having a rampaging Seiten Taisei around... in a town full of people.
Oh boy, they did it! He's alive (and is healing himself)! I can't say the same for any poor bystanders if Hakkai and Gojyo can't deal with him though. The two get themselves ready to fight Seiten Taisei and get the limiter back on him. And so a fight begins.
Hazel and Gato arrives in time before Seiten Taisei could hurt anyone. This also meant their suspicions about Goku were unfortunately proven true. The two now joins the battle against Seiten Taisei.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Seiten Taisei will just keep healing himself and the others are having trouble dealing with him. Sanzo is nowhere to be found as well. Hakkai decided to take off his own limiter and asks Gojyo to stop him if he himself goes on a rampage.
Hakkai in demon mode can actually attack Seiten Taisei but it's still not good enough. The Earth itself created Seiten Taisei and it will keep him alive. Hazel realizes that Goku is more than just a demon - he's more like a god.
We get a flashback from a time before Sanzo met Goku).
It's when Sanzo met Jikaku - the head priest of Keiun Temple - as he stayed there. Back then, Sanzo didn't wear his sutra like he does now and he was plagued with nightmares of his master's death and all of the things he did to survive on his journey. He couldn't think of himself as a priest back then with all of the kills he had to do but the head priest tells him that maybe the blood he smells on himself was his own.
A group of bandits later attacked looking for Sanzo but Jikaku tried to face them himself. Sanzo arrives just as Jikaku gets stabbed. With a few parting words, Jikaku dies and well, if you want to know how everything went, please watch Saiyuki Reload Burial. It’s an OVA prequel of Saiyuki with the characters’ backstories including this flashback but expanded.
The thought of the past - and all of his talks with the old priest - finally calmed Sanzo down from his anger. He realizes that Goku's limiter must've been taken off and runs.
Meanwhile he weather is going crazy and Seiten Taisei is beating the heck out of Hakkai. Hakkai uses that opportunity to wrap vines around Seiten Taisei and when he's finally able to pin the latter down, Hakkai beats Seien Taisei back. He seems to be losing it too at this point and is enjoying punching the hell out of Seiten Taisei.
Gojyo had to step in and stop him like he was asked to. Hakkai finally calms down when he realized what was happening.
Hakkai has a plan and asks Hazel and Gato for help. With their combined powers - Hazel strengthening Gato, Gato acting as a lightning rod, and Hakkai'z vines - they successfully electrocuted Seiten Taisei. Sanzo gets there just in time to see Gojyo put on back Goku's limiter.
The entire ordeal took a toll on Hakkai and he's now the one unconscious from his wounds. Gojyo performs chest compressions and brought Hakkai back from near death. Hakkai wakes up and asks if Goku's okay and Gojyo's just relieved no one died.
Gojyo carries the unconscious Goku and Hakkai away past Sanzo. It seems he’s mad that Sanzo had left them earlier when everything was going down.
--
This episode was fun. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Seiten Taisei after all.
There were no POV of Seiten Taisei this time around though so there’s that. I mean, back then there’s at least Goku remembering, even very vaguely, Konzen and the others before completely losing it. But then again, there was no time for him to slowly transition from Goku to Seiten Taisei with Goku being temporarily dead.
I was so worried when Hazel and Gato arrived but the result was actually an okay one? They collaborated with Hakkai and Gojyo when fighting against Seiten Taisei and never questioned that. Like, they talked with the two cooperated with no complaints. They seemed to be worried about Hakkai at the end there, too. Hazel even wordlessly tried to offer to revive Hakkai with the pendant but Gojyo stopped him and tried bringing him back the normal way. I guess this means they’d at least talk to the guys later about everything instead of just trying to kill Goku, right?
I want them to be friends now that I know they’re really not so bad. Besides, last episode it was explained that they’re not on Ukoku’s side. That guy is too shady even for them.
I wonder how long they’d be allowed to stay in town after the events of that night. The townspeople know Goku is somewhat like a dangerous demon after all. The group needs to talk to each other after everything as well, especially Sanzo. I wonder how they’d be able to figure out who attacked Goku? I’m really excited and curious right now but I’d be waiting for the next episodes.
The Saiyuki Burial flashback was surprising to see. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the OVA but I recognized the scene immediately lol. The OVAs can be found on anime sites even the ones I use now which is great cause I remember back when I tried watching it years ago, I had to search for it cause it wasn’t uploaded in a lot of places.
By far, I think the hardest Saiyuki OVA to find is the extra episode of Gaiden which features Heaven’s Western Army which was under the command of Kenren and Tenpou back then (they helped the group escape from heaven). It’s not in most sites and some I did find weren’t English subbed. The only English subbed one I found was translated by someone not that fluent in Japanese but I do appreciate their hard work on it as I’d never have watched it if it weren’t for them.
Anyways, I guess I gotta wait for next week :)

19.I've never seen snow in person before, until now. what's this white stuff falling from the sky why are you laughing at me" for sha gojyo !!(:
A/n: this is perfect and yay Gojyo!! I love this boy!
Due to Gojyo’s shitty past im sure he’s seen snow before.
Sooo for this I’m doing a Princess!Reader x Gojyo!
I think it would be so adorable of him falling for a princess.
Prompt: “.I've never seen snow in person before, until now. what's this white stuff falling from the sky why are you laughing at me.”
Gojyo never really liked the snow, it was wet, cold and made missions worse when having to fight in the stuff. Not to mention Goku’s constant whining, Sanzo with his finger on the trigger constantly as Hakkai tried to call the group down. It seemed that the whole group was miserable.
Though it seemed that Gojyo’s mood quickly changed when he found out that he and the others world be guarding a Princess. And once the red head managed to get a good look at you he could have sworn it was love at first sight...if he believed in the crap.
With the sheltered life you had, your parents often kept you locked in the home. Parent of you couldn’t blame them. You were a Princess after all , not to mention their only daughter so that meant you had a set of rules you had to follow. It also meant that your really had a chance to step outside.
That was until you met the Sanzo Party, they were tasked with protecting you, to act as escorts until you reached your destination and while you were happy to get out of those walls you never thought you’d see so many amazing things.
Your eyes went wide as you stepped out side of the inn you and the others were in you couldn’t help but look up in the side in amazement.
Smiling your nose twitched as a snowflake landed on your skin. You didn’t mind the cold air, it felt nice.
You only jumped when you heard a fimiliar voice call out.
“Princess! You’re gonna catch a cold if you stand out here....I’m pretty sure Sanzo will shoot me and I rather not find out what Hakkai will do to me.”
Pouting your lips Gojyo let out a sigh as he slipped his jacket off, stepping closer to you he plsced his jacket on your shoulders.
“Stay warm ya.”
Blushing you tugged the material close inhaling his scent, it always seemed to calm you.
“What are you looking at anyway?”
Shrugging your shoulders your then looked up at the sky.
“I've never seen snow in person before, until now. What's this white stuff falling from the sky why are you laughing at me.”
Wrinkling your nose you turned back to face the man, he was snickering before but now he let out a short laugh.
“You haven’t? They’re snow flakes...Man that’s adorable.”
Grinning he ruffled your hair, that was too cute.Puffing out your cheeks your cheeks you let out a huff but biting your lip you then inches closer to Gojyo.
“They are really beautiful...I thank you...you and..I...” Struggling with the words you shifted your body in the snow.
“Hehe what’s wrong Princess?! Cat got your tong-.”
Though your quickly cut the man off as you pressed your lips against his. It was a brief kiss as Gojyo barley had a chance to respond, he didn’t think this was real but judging by the snowflakes hitting his cheek this was all too real.
It wasn’t until you pulled back that he finally blinked. Feeling the warmth on your cheeks you gave him a small bow stammering out an apology.
“I’m sorry! I don’t know what came over me! - g-good bye.” Rushing back into the inn you just wanted to hide in your bed leaving the dazed man behind.
Blinking a few times Gojyo wetted his lips, he could still taste the sweetness of your own lips.
“H-hey! Princess wait! I didn’t feel that kiss! Can I have another!”

Role - Saiyuki fic (Sanzo/Kougaiji, au)
((For @saiyuki-69mins week 33, Role Change. AKA, I wanted demon Sanzo, I saw demon!Sanzo and Kou fanart, and let’s be real I am hella weak. I don’t know what any of this is, what’s going on, who they’re at war with, or why, or what this au is. It just is, and I wanted it, and that’s all there is to it. Don’t ask what the tense is either bc I don’t know and I didn’t beta. This is first draft realness, yo.))
“The reports from the battlefield have arrived, Lord Kougaiji.”
Dark red hair that shone almost maroon shifted, cascading like silk over the prince’s shoulder as he gave his underling a respectful nod. Violet eyes shifting to the papers laid out on the desk, he pulled the newest pack close to him.
“Thank you, Retsuko. You are dismissed.”
The scurry of feet was replaced with the sound of shifting cloth, the door behind him just barely creaking shut. Soft footsteps gave away the other’s approach long before a pale hand came into vision, reaching for the papers Kougaiji had just received.
“So the reports finally arrived. Took them long enough.”
Kougaiji could feel the man’s breath ghosting past his ear, a familiar heartbeat right beside him.
“Yes. I expect you’ll have them looked over by nightfall.”
“Of course, my prince.” The voice behind him dripped with sarcasm, as it always did when it came to titles. He could feel the shift as it pulled away, a cool breeze following in his wake.
Walking around the table, the blond didn’t look up from the papers, moving to his work table just a few feet away from Kougaiji’s. As his right hand man, Genjo was one of his most trusted advisors, and Kougaiji found it more convenient to have him close at hand. As his lover, Kougaiji might even admit that he preferred the man’s company over others, much of the time.
Letting silence fall between them, Kougaiji was back to his own papers, refreshing his mind on battle plans and treaties, tax records and citizen requests. NEarly an hour passing between them, there was nothing other than the occasional rustle of papers to interrupt their work. He was deep in the midst of a request for aid against a drought when the slam of papers startled him, Genjo’s annoyed click of the tongue following.
“Zakuro’s gotten himself in trouble. Again.” A long, heavy sigh, Genjo pinched the bridge of his nose, the claws of his left hand tapping against the rich wood of the desk. “He’s gotten himself and his whole platoon deep into enemy territory, on accident, and without a clear path out. They’re holding out, but he needs backup. Aside from that, Dokugakuji and Gojyo’s regiments were successful, but they sustained heavy injuries. The eastern front needs supplies, and the southern lines have nothing to report.”
“Send whatever supplies we can to the eastern front, as usual. Yaone and Hakkai will be sent out to tend to the injured, and they may bring a small guard and assistants as they need. As for Zakuro, Goku and his team can go out again, unless they’re otherwise busy?” A cock of his head, Kougaiji knew well where the brunet was stationed, and that he could easily be spared. “He’s got a knack at rescuing the General by now.”
“Yeah, because he does it every other week.” Releasing his fingers, Genjo rolled his eyes. “I still think we should just demote the idiot, but. As you command, your highness.”
That sarcastic tone was back, Genjo’s lips pursing as he turned back to his papers, pulling out a blank sheet and making a few notes. Scribing Kougaiji’s orders, hopefully without embellishment this time.
Glancing out the window, Kougaiji pushed himself back from the desk. A few steps to cross the room, and he was leaning over the blond.
“You don’t approve of my decisions?”
“Of course not, I have only respect for your rule.”
“You know Zakuro is one of our more talented generals, despite his propensity for dramatics, and lack of direction.”
Another click of the tongue, and a familiar glare over the shoulder was the blond’s first response.
“Next time I’m hiring him a damn keeper, just so you know.”
A slight quirk of the lips, Kougaiji knew he’d won, though Genjo would never quite admit that. There were a lot of things Genjo didn’t quite like to admit, though it didn’t stop him from leaning in, resting a head on his lover’s cool shoulder, nuzzling a pointed ear gently.
“Yes, of course you will.”

[Walkie Talkie]
[Author’s Note: I was supposed to be writing out the family relationships in this so anyone who reads this gets a clear picture but...that stopped being fun. Anyway I’ll finish that later and add it to this tag! So it’s fine! You’ll totally get a clear picture later..!! I will say that in my AU, Kenren is the sha family patriach and a police officer. Also Nataku is his youngest son (yes he was adopted.)]
◙ * ◙
The officer was worried. Gojyo had been moody lately; when he thought no one was looking there’d be a frown on his lips. It even looked as if he had to remind himself to laugh and crack jokes, something that had usually come naturally to him. Even more concerning, he teased people less,which---given how their family operated---was enough to have Kenren, Jien and Nataku consider taking Gojyo to the hospital. But despite how they tried to hint that they would be willing to listen, (or even outright ask in the case of Nataku) Gojyo wouldn’t tell them what was wrong.
Gojyo was more successful with keeping it hidden now that he was older, but he was often a bundle of anxiety on the inside. Kenren being the attentive father that he is, he is still able to spy when worries are brewing deep in the heart of his second son. Still he didn’t ever speak on it these days, not unless Gojyo approached him first about something. As much as Kenren would love to rush to his child’s aid immediately, he knew his son’s personality enough to know he’d play it off as nothing, even tease the old man about being a worrywart.
Honestly, this little game the two had to play in order for Gojyo to admit anything was wrong could be tiring, but Kenren knew he couldn’t complain. He was certain this was a trait Gojyo had gotten from himself. In fact, both Jien and Nataku---Kenren’s two other sons---exhibited the same traits. Kenren sighed, brushing a hand against his forehead, he sure hoped that, if his own kids had any of their own in the future, that they would raise them to speak on their feelings more clearly. Or at all.
Kenren found his eyes slowly shifting to the walkie talkie on his desk. It was clearly old but Kenren always made sure it was working properly. He remembered when he had gotten a pair for him and Gojyo when Gojyo was really young. About 7 or so? He remembered the teasing he got from the people in the precinct, it was embarrassing but he didn’t mind. In spite of how Kenren behaved, to him being a good father was something he prided himself on. Something he was always striving to be, if that led to some good natured teasing then so be it. Kenren’s eye softened.
Gojyo’s anxiety was something Kenren had noticed when he was a child, but even then the little guy was slow to give up any information regarding his worries. At his current age, Kenren assumed part of why he kept his mouth shut was due to wanting to keep a ‘cool image’, and also him deciding it was something he could handle on his own, but back then Kenren was sure the reason was because Gojyo looked up to Jien and wanted to emulate him.
Unlike Gojyo, Jien seemed like a rock who could withstand any obstacle, a guy with a strong heart and fire to match (this, of course, was how Gojyo saw his brother.) Gojyo had always looked at his brother with starry eyes, eyes that continue to follow his dear big brother to this day. It was due to thinking this way that Gojyo tried to keep his sadness and worries in check, he’d rather run off then allow anyone to see the tears beginning to well up in his young eyes. Knowing this, and knowing it was best to tread lightly, both Jien and Kenren had taken a different approach to lightening the younger boy’s mood. For Jien it’d involve making him laugh until he forgot, but Kenren decided to buy the boy a walkie talkie. He made sure it looked similar to his own (as similar as a toy could get anyway,) because he knew that’d be something Gojyo would’ve looked for.
“Why do you have your walkie talkie, dad...?” Gojyo had asked. Gojyo blinked his tears back hoping that his dad would take this as him emphasizing his confusion.
“It’s not mine,” Kenren started, a grin on his face. “It’s yours.”
Gojyo’s brows furrowed, “why...?”
“So we can chat any time! Why else?” Another laugh left his lips when he saw the instant joy that flickered across his son’s eyes.
However this was soon replaced with a pout once more, “...why,” he emphasized strongly. There was a pause as he fought the urge to puff his cheeks up, “I don’t think Jien has one, right...?” Gojyo’s round hands pulled at the bottom of his shorts. Inside Gojyo was happy, but there was also sadness mixed with that happiness. Did his dad think he needed him more? If that was the case...how was he supposed to catch up to his big brother? It made him feel like he took three steps back. Gojyo’s shoulders hunched.
“Heeey, now, kiddo.” Kenren reached over and ruffled the boy’s hair, “what’cha getting so sad for? Didn’t you say you wanted to be a cop before?”
Gojyo blinked, when had he said that? He then remembered when he mentioned he was playing the cop in a game of Cop and Robbers. “That was a game!”
“Yeah but you said ‘I’m like you, dad!’ And this old man’s heart was so moved I had to get us matching walkie talkies,” he feigned a sob before pulling out a second one. Once again joy flickered in Gojyo’s eyes, but he didn’t get a chance to reply before Kenren continued. “Or what, you don’t want to be able to be able to share reports with me?”
Gojyo’s ears perked up. Report...? This reminded him of school work, and the thought made him want to twist his face. His dad looked hopeful, so maybe that wasn’t the case. “Do adults do reports too?” He asked, hesitant, he really hoped not.
“Yeah--”
Gojyo’s heart dropped. He had to look forward to that?
“But don’t worry, reports are cooler when police are doing it.”
Gojyo raised his brows, “howcome?”
Kenren straightened up, he brimmed with confidence. “Because! Reports are how police know when something bad happened! That’s how they know to fix the problem.”
Gojyo could practically hear the exclamation points in his head, Oh! That made sense to him.
Seeing his son was now interested, Kenren gently shook the walkie talkie in front of his face. “Sooo...want to share reports with dad? You tell me when something is wrong, I’ll tell you when something is wrong, and together we can fix any trouble that shows up!”
An odd feeling filled Gojyo’s tiny chest, he felt happy but it hurt too. He wanted to put a hand to his chest but he kept his hands where it was, “really...?” He softly asked. There was a pause. Kenren had to keep himself from scooping his son up, and was secretly relieved when Gojyo spoke up once more. “Okay.”
There was a tiny smile on his face and Kenren found himself mirroring it.
“You good?”
“I’m good!”
“You’re ready?”
Gojyo laughed, “I’m ready”
“Good,” Kenren then handed Gojyo the walkie talkie. “Remember to report anything bad!”
“Anything bad...?” Gojyo was a bit unsure what he meant, that was a vague statement after all. He then wondered if he should start wandering outside to see if anything suspicious was happening but it was evening and there was no way dad would let him out now.
“Anything! Did you know that...we police can even take care of problems when it’s inside? Like, when someone is reaaaally sad. We try our best to help those problems too.”
Gojyo tilted his head to look his dad in the eyes, “really...?” He paused. “I thought that was the teacher’s job.”
“It’s everyone’s! We all have a job to try and help each other when we’re sad,so, that means you need to report that too, okay?”
Gojyo nodded, “okay.” His brows furrowed firmly, “you too, okay?”
Kenren looked taken aback, he hadn’t expected this to be turned around on him. Kenren could feel his emotions getting the better of him and so he nodded, “okay.”
Gojyo grinned, “good!”
Kenren chuckled, “all right, go to bed.” Tucking Gojyo into bed, Kenren gave him a quick kiss on the forehead, grinning when he noticed how tightly Gojyo held the walkie talkie in his tiny hands. “Keep that safe.”
Gojyo nodded.
Kenren’s eyes were closed, wistful smile on his face as he remembered that day. That was one of the many treasured memories he had of his children, just thinking abut how much they’ve grown made him want to cry. “Ah shit...!” He laughed, “I’m really getting old.” He groaned.
The crackling of a walkie talkie alerted him, he immediately turned to find his police talkie when he heard Gojyo’s voice.
“...Dad?”
Kenren was startled, it had been a long time since he heard Gojyo through the walkie talkie, there was a part of him who wondered if it was his head playing tricks on him due to his nostalgia.
“Dad...are you there...?”
Kenren snatched the walkie talkie up, to think Gojyo really reached out to him on it again. “Y-yeah?” Kenren laughed, masking his surprise. “What’s up?”
There was a pause before Gojyo continued, “yeah...I got a report.”
Kenren was worried, but that worry was washed away by relief. “Tell me all about it.”
◙ * ◙
[Author’s Note]: Dun dun duuun, the first thing I’ve written in a long time~! This was something I was playing in my head for a while. Gojyo still uses the walkie talkie everyone once and a while, it’s just been a loooooong time since then, and it’s never as frequently as it was when he was younger.
Also I like to think that when Jien has a problem, he’ll talk to Kenren but he’d tag “man to man” at the end. Like “dad, can we have a talk? Man to man.”
As for Nataku...Nataku just be like, “dad, can I ask you something?” HE’S THE CLOSET TO BEING ABLE TO SAY IT WITHOUT GIVING A RUN AROUND. Though I imagine it’s slowly getting harder for him as he gets older so Ken is already thinking about how he’ll get his youngest to spill his heart out to him.
#saiyuki#family au#sha gojyo#general kenren#my writing#fanfic#long post#tbh you're gonna have to assume most of my fics are gonna have this tag#i'm only tagging this as such because...like...what if by some miracle I end up writing something short!?#ficlet

@r3loaded said → " we’re heading home. " ( src. / accepting. )
It only takes a moment for Hakkai to understand what Sanzo is saying. They've traded possibilities back and forth—Hakkai has talked, mostly, and Sanzo has occasionally offered his own thoughts when he has any—about the future, but Sanzo has never spoken about it so concretely before.
Hakkai recalls the fragments of conversations that had led up to this; Sanzo's quiet admissions regarding his own past and the ideas that came from the prompting Hakkai had given him. They allow Hakkai to put a proper name to 'home'; Kinzan temple.
Before he can control himself, Hakkai feels his face split into a smile so raw it nearly hurts. He can hardly remember the last time he'd smiled and meant it so deeply—even the wide grin he'd sported the whole day after successfully putting an end to the Minus Wave had been spurred by relief more so than happiness.
It just makes him happy to hear Sanzo say something like 'home'. Even before, he'd never used that kind of language to refer to Keiun temple.
"So you've decided, then?" Hakkai asks, tearing his eyes away from the once-bustling streets as he leans further back against the tree to look over at Sanzo. "I'm glad... Truthfully, I've already been looking into things I can teach myself on the way back relating to construction management, since you mentioned it was in disrepair. I would have hated for those skills to go completely to waste."
Some nearby street carries the loud voices of Goku and Gojyo over to the isolated tree on the town's outskirts that Hakkai and Sanzo have found their place under; Hakkai chuckles inaudibly, because letting out his amusement is a better option than showing how much his heart is beginning to swell at the idea of the four of them, remaining together after everything is done.
Sanzo and Gojyo had both made their complaints clear in the past about their circumstances, but despite the annoyances on the way, Hakkai couldn't have asked to live his life alongside a better group of people.
"... Ahaha. We even have a reliable 'construction crew'. At the very least, they're certainly as noisy as one," Hakkai quips, allowing his eyes to slide shut.
He tries not to focus on the stirring of vines somewhere deep inside of him, held back by limiters as they are—they're easier to notice, now that he takes his limiters off regularly. It sometimes feels like, were he to leave them unchecked, they'd find some way to plant themselves firmly underneath the skin of everyone he holds dear—a feeling that isn't helped by his imagination, which doesn't allow him to turn his mind away from thinking about all three of his companions and a home.
Not that those things are all that different.
"I'm looking forward to getting there," he admits. "With no wind in our sails propelling us forward, being on the move has gotten a little tiring. Settling down with everyone sounds like the kindest fate I can imagine."

i am not sure how to explain this story, but basically, it's an au where Hakkai is a demon (of the Christian kind) on earth and Gojyo is a human that ended up working with him. They opened together a nightclub, where they both work, they are in some kind of open relationship together but everybody knows that the demon doesn't like when someone gets too friendly with his human. My idea is that Gojyo saved the demon without knowing what he was, and Hakkai becomes obsessed with taking the human's soul, but for how much he tried he never found something that Gojyo desired enough. along the line, they became friends/lovers and they opened a nightclub that everybody calls "Pandemonium". Hakkai has a dark goal in mind and he uses Gojyo to access the part of the world he cant. The human doesn't seem to mind working for him, he never had any desires or aspirations before that and he likes the other company. the demon keeps telling himself that he is just using him, but he slowly falls in love and obsession, not even realizing that, if only Gojyo asked he would have done anything for him, without even asking for an ounce of soul in return. idk if this makes any sense but i will gladly explain myself better if anyone is interested!

For the ask game, modern AU of Saiyuki, please. ^^
This is such a great idea that I can't narrow it down to one AU. I'm going to do two of these. I'll tag you for the second one later!
First up is the Convenience Store AU (like a coffee shop AU but more grimy, as suits the Sanzou party):
All four of our main characters work the night shift at a convenience store. Sanzou and Gojyo use their employee discount to smoke enough cigarettes to clear out the store.
Sanzou is the manager despite being a college student working part-time. This is because no one else could handle the rest of the night staff, who have a certain reputation for being...eccentric.
Goku eats all the expired food. In fact, Sanzou has to stop him from taking it off the shelves before it expires. As soon as the clock hits midnight, Goku pounces.
Hakkai seems friendly on the surface, but he's brutal toward entitled customers. He records customers to play back their words. He drops threatening lines like "It’s amazing how you’ll yell at the same person who now has your credit card number" with a smile so no one can tell if he's serious.
Because Gojyo looks like a punk, the customers assume that Gojyo must be working at a convenience store because he has a criminal record. (Actually, Hakkai is the one with the rap sheet.) In reality, Gojyo is the soft touch of the staff. He'll secretly let poor customers take food and necessities without paying. Sanzou pretends to notice. But whenever Gojyo slips something extra to a pretty woman, Sanzou takes it out of his paycheck.
Dr. Ni is a creepy customer who got thrown out and banned for acting strange toward Sanzou.
Kougaiji runs a gang of delinquents who keep trying to shoplift from the store. His little sister Liren tries to buy alcohol with a fake ID.
Remember the Kami-sama arc where Gojyo briefly leaves the group? In this AU, Gojyo quit because he found a higher paying office job. But the company turned out to be running a scam and they tried to stick Gojyo with the blame when they got caught. Sanzou is from a super-rich family, and he showed up with a dozen lawyers to prove Gojyo's innocence. Sanzou will never let Gojyo live this down.

Saiyuki reread
Reload Blast volume 2
- so there are 5 places in Tougenkyou where you can talk with Sanbutsushin, hm... I wonder if there are five for five Sanzo priests locations
- the barrier that Sharak set doesn’t allow youkai to come in, so how come Hakkai could enter? I assume that Gojyo isn’t recognized as a full youkai (yet?), since he’s half human (but even then), but Hakkai should be full youkai, right? He’s probably also somehow special, but... I don’t think the barrier can tell the difference (Goku isn’t youkai, so that’s ok)
- I love how Goku went from “a bit worried, because Sanzo was late” to “Sanzo found a friend and he looks relaxed I’m happy~” within like 30 seconds
- ok, but when Ukoku and Sanzo used the sutras at once, they didn’t feel anything, right? Was Sanzo too out of it that he didn’t notice anything strange? Or when the sutras are used against each other they don’t give off weird feeling? Or did Ukoku make it disappear quickly, so they actually weren’t really “on” at the same time?
- becoming a Sanzo is really sad and lonely. Even before Goku says that to Hassan, you can just feel it from Sharak and Hassan’s interaction - she can’t allow anyone to get too close to her, she rose above genders, she is a Sanzo... and while Hassan is and will stay loyal to her, she probably doesn’t like it, because she thinks he deserves better, because she can’t give him what he wants, but in the end she accepts that he will always be there next to her
(on the other hand, Sanzo probably expects that one day Goku will leave him and never come back...)
- how come Hassan doesn’t feel the barrier breaking?
- Goku: Be careful!! Sanzo: That’s my line
dere!Sanzo appeared~
they both grew into this exchange - Goku knows that he can leave Sanzo alone, because he will still be there when he comes back; and after almost losing Goku, Sanzo became more upfront about his feelings with him and he knows that Goku will be ok now on his own (even though he wanted to send him together with Gojyo as his back up... ok no he didn’t, but that’s what I like to read it as.). (Blast is so good) Such a long way from “you stupid monkey! *harisen* because I don’t know how to tell you that I’m relieved you’re ok Chin Yisou times”. You did good, Genjyo.
- I said this during Hazel arc too, but when Sanzo’s like “heh, so you can use a technique like that too” to Hassan (and before to Hazel) he is complimenting him in his own way, but I feel like he’s also a bit envious (even though he has his gun), because things could be a bit easier if he could kill more people/youkai at once without using Makai Tenjou
- “I don’t have any training. I can’t use a technique like that at all.” “How did you become a Sanzo priest!!?” “That’s what I want to know!”
What was Koumyou doing with Kouryuu’s education? Shuuei didn’t teach him the use of talismans, he wasn’t given any special Sanzo training, he just read books and learned how to fight with his body to kick around the monks. If Koumyou knew that one day Kouryuu needed to become a Sanzo, why didn’t he prepare him for it? Or maybe he didn’t think the time would come so soon?
- I really like that Goku can feel that something is about to happen to Sanzo. (Did he feel something was wrong before they reached him, when Sanzo was fighting Ukoku?) I still wonder if it goes Goku→Sanzo and Gojyo→Hakkai only. Or if it only happened once with Gojyo...
- Hakkai’s eyes are so dead when he’s like “it’s too sexy” hahahaha
- “Goku-tachi”, not “aitsura”, that’s rare (I pay too much attention to the way they address each other)
- when Sanzo’s facing against Kougaiji, he really seems like the main character of a battle manga.
- I wonder if it was just a coincidence or if Sanzo positioned himself the way so he could protect his left side, since he’s originally left handed, so he can “afford to sacrifice” his right hand
- did Kougaiji lose his memories of when he was sealed? Or was he too young and now he only remembers the “aura” and not Nataku himself? Or did he never see him?
- the thing about Goku is that Sanzo says he feels “youkai aura” when Seiten Taisei is released, but Seiten Taisei isn’t a youkai or a human or a god and his aura is different from Nataku’s. So are Seiten Taisei’s aura and powers really like that of youkais, or are they just similar so they’re easily mistaken for it? Do youkai powers come from the Earth itself?
- Sanzo only allowing himself to faint when he knows he’s safe, because Goku returned is blessed content
- I wonder if Nataku is able to grow up or if he will forever stay like this. He can grow (he used to a baby, unless that baby was a different “Nataku”, I need to reread Gaiden), he can bleed, but his body is artificial...
- hm, ok, so Hakkai says that Gojyo feeling weird at the fortress was because of the barrier, but... it doesn’t have any effect on Hakkai? Why? Because of limiters? Because his DNA is different from normal youkais?
- “The stars are unchanging. No matter how much one opposes it. No matter how strongly one desires it. All beings are nothing more than small fragments of destiny. The wheel tracks will soon stop. After all, they, too, can’t break free from Shakyamuni’s palm.”
- but if, for now, I think about Buddha as the one who is behind everything, even Nataku, was the timing of Nataku coming down a coincidence or was he supposed to stop Sanzo from being killed? Because Sanzo is still needed for something? (I will think more about this after vol 3)

Headcannon prompt for Hakkai and Gojyo ♒ ☾ ♦ ♥ ♡ ■ ✿
Of course, anon dear! Thank you for your request and I hope you’ll enjoy the headcanons!
Hakkai
♒ - cooking/food headcanon
Hakkai is really good at cooking. He’s always the one to cook, both back when it was him and Kanan and then when it becomes him and Gojyo. He doesn’t really mind doing it either, though if he’s honest, cooking isn’t something he really loves doing either.
☾ - sleep headcanon
Hakkai can’t be too covered up while sleeping. He gets warm very easily while sleeping and a light blanket over his clothed body is the most he can handle. In an odd twist though, he’ll need to sleep with that thin blanket even during the warmer months. He finds it a little hard to get a really good night’s sleep unless he has some sort of covering over his body.
♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon
Hakkai almost always has a book with him, no matter where he is. If it’s not directly with him, it’s packed away in his luggage or in a bag. He doesn’t like to be completely without any source of entertainment, though he can make due if he absolutely has to.
♥ - family headcanon
Hakkai is the one to most often refer to the Sanzo party as a family, making little offside jokes or remarks about it. While most of his comments are joking and sarcastic though, he does kind of low-key consider the group its own little family at this point. Honestly, he cares about the other three as much as he’s ever cared about anyone else, though he’d never openly admit it.
♡ - romantic headcanon
Hakkai knows a lot of romantic poetry and, when the mood is right (particularly during the afterglow of sex, in the place of more mundane pillow talk), he might quote lines from poems he really likes to his partner. They often come out of the blue but are always quite beautiful.
■ - Bedroom/house/living quarters headcanon
Hakkai, while not a neat freak, is generally a very organized and clean person. He always tidies up after himself and prefers for his living quarters to look somewhat neat and orderly and will chastise anyone he’s living with if they get really messy in their living habits. He’s not their maid after all and he’s not going to live in a pigsty so they’re just going to have to clean up a bit.
✿ - Sex headcanon
While he won’t refuse to try it, the idea of sex in water (such as a hot spring or bath) or in the shower does absolutely nothing for him. He can’t help but see all the problems and potential dangers in it and he’ll often try to distract a partner (and often succeed) before his partner can outright suggest it since, as said, he won’t refuse them.
Gojyo
♒ - cooking/food headcanon
It’s not that Gojyo can’t cook - he can. He’s had to learn how to, considering how long he’s been on his own. It’s just that he’s not the best at it. Honestly, he’s just too lazy to do it half the time, since eating out is just easier most times. However, he does have one or two things he’s really good at making - pancakes are top of that list.
☾ - sleep headcanon
In an odd quirk, Gojyo gets the best sleep of his life any time he gets sick. The rest of the time he’s a restless sleeper who finds it hard to actually fall asleep.
♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon
Gojyo doesn’t like cockroaches or really any insect. He won’t scream and kyah, kyah over them (not most of the time - he might if they really sneak up on him and surprise him) but he is not a fan of creepy crawlies at all!
♥ - family headcanon
Even with all the messed up stuff that happened and even though he knows he should hate her for what she did and how she treated him, Gojyo still loves his stepmother and he wishes sometimes that he’d been just a bit better, just a bit less of..well, him so that she could’ve somehow managed to love him as well.
♡ - romantic headcanon
Gojyo will enjoy brushing a partner’s hair. He’s not even sure how he discovered that fact - it wasn’t something he probably sought to do but just something that ended up happening but he found himself honestly enjoying it. It was very relaxing, to have them sitting in front of him, their freshly washed hair under his fingers as he brushed their hair, letting his fingers rake through the strands after the brush slid through them.
■ - Bedroom/house/living quarters headcanon
Gojyo’s very minimalistic in his living quarters. He doesn’t need a lot to survive and there’s not a lot of clutter and junk in his house. Most of what he does have too is second-hand or fixed up furniture that other people were getting rid of - though he doesn’t look like it, he’s not bad at doing small repairs.
✿ - Sex headcanon
He likes to kiss down his partner’s hipbones before placing a light kiss on their pelvis before he goes down on them. It’s almost a ‘I hope you enjoy’ message, just a very sweet thing he does before he does some very delicious and very naughty things to them.

Fictober #29: “At least it can’t get any worse.”
29.
He’d had no idea what he was in for, but Gojyo was increasingly convinced that he’d made a mistake. No helping it now, though, the deed was done. That first act had been instinct.
He sees a penny, he picks it up. His penny now. When he was younger, if someone dropped food and left it, that was his food now. Those were reasonable things. Picking up the corpse you found in the road was a lot harder to explain. Gojyo had never been broke enough to loot a dead guy, and never hungry enough to resort to cannibalism.
Still, here he was with a living dead man in his house, and what had first been an act of instinct was now a precarious dance, a waltz around his truths and his new friend’s neuroses and quirks. Don’t forget the trash. Don’t talk about siblings. Don’t ash into beer cans. Don’t think about why his chest hurts when Hakkai is upset or angry. Don’t leave him alone on rainy nights. Don’t even think about why they’re both here, together, why the thought of coming back to find an empty house or a full grave was the nightmare that sent Gojyo into a panic attack on the nights he wasn’t sleeping next to someone else.
The late nights at the tables, the loose women whose names he forgot in mere minutes after whispering them in passion, the beer that he’d drink long past the point of regret, before it had all just been part of the game. Habitual, more than for the sake of enjoyment. Now, it was just an excuse not to do the things he wanted to do. He’d stay at the tables longer than he ought’ve to avoid having to go back on the nights when the ache got worse, he’d drink heavier to numb that pain, he’d imitate affection for women he didn’t really want anymore to distract him from it, or in some desperate attempt to trick himself out of it. None of it made the ache go away.
He’d never meant to want someone. No, scratch that. He wanted a lot of someones. He’d just stopped expecting to be wanted back. Somewhere between dragging a corpse home to inviting him back newly alive, to getting rescued from his fate by an umbrella and ten claws, to months spent side by side, living in peace, he’d gone and started wanting to be kept.
He had tripped and stumbled into love with his only real friend. At least, he mused, it can’t get any worse.
