I see all these comments and notes about changes with Allura and Lotor and Keith and Lance, but where's Shiro in all this? One of my biggest grievances about s7-8 was how they seemed to strip him of his personality and turn him into a bland leader, and it was thought that they might've cut some of his more personal interactions with the team. Does this have any basis in reality?
Hello! Thank you for the question.
Tumblr media
This question... is a loaded one and more complicated than one realises.
If you're unaware, Shiro has an complicated history in the corporate realm of developing Voltron: Legendary Defender.
He was meant to die after Season 2.
He was the mentor character; a vehicle to progress a leadership narrative for Keith. That's why he talks about dying in various moments throughout VLD.
Very Gurren Lagann (Simon & Kamina, anyone?)
It didn't happen due to him being the most popular character and they needed to sell more toys.
They even made a joke about it in S4E4: The Voltron Show.
Tumblr media
Coran freaks out and tells him they're never letting him go. He's the most popular character.
So TL;DR: They tried to kill him again post Season 6. He truly had no purpose originally past Season 7. The many arcs he had (including the Kuron arc) were resolved already.
He was literally in a coffin in S7E1: A Little Adventure, while the gang tried to find a way to get him to wake up after his Clone body starts to disagree with him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In one of the drafts apparently as spoken to on the Afterbuzz TV Podcast, the Showrunners wanted to see Allura progress into his commandeering position once Earth and the Atlas came into play. Shiro's current role from S7-8.
Nope. Not allowed.
So, they were able to integrate him in a very impactful way into Season 7 in the final battle, were able to give him a greater purpose in order to save Earth, and we did have some sweet moments in Season 8; Clear Day being one of them.
He played a quintessential role in Season 8 at the commander of the ATLAS, but he did have another core purpose, and of course, this was a mentor role.
Someone to guide the way for others.
Tumblr media
Boom.
He was a vehicle for another subplot: The Love Triangle™
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Claudia is a character from Macross / Robotech, who lost their Fiancé; a fighter pilot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Claudia comforts Hikaru, who was just broken up with by Macross Idol, Lynn Minmay, and is currently stuck in a love triangle between her and her childhood friend now supervisor, Misa?
Time to blow your mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both photos were taken by a Beezer equivalent robot, same beep and boop sounds.
Don't believe me? Watch here from 10:20
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sound familiar?
The VAs even mentioned there was a scene between Lance and Shiro that made everyone in the booth cry. We don't ever see this scene as far as we're aware.
The love triangle subplot was cut for the most part, so the mentorship scenes he was meant to have purpose and intent for? The sole reason they instilled the Adam storyline and his death in the first place?
All cut.
TL;DR: He did have a greater purpose to the plot of Season 8, however it was for the most part cut. Boo.
Thank you for the question.

A study on Lance's underrated role on the team. Pt 4
Pidge
It is a common interpretation to see Pidge and Lance's relationship as very sibling like, and I can see why.
Since the very first episode we see Lance being very perceptive of her.
Tumblr media
It is funny how bossy Lance is in the simulator, but he does care about his team following safety measures.
Tumblr media
After they crash the simulator and Iverson badmouths the Kerberos Mission crew, Lance prevents Pidge from going off and getting in more trouble.
And this ends with him in the end of Iverson's irritation, reminding him he is in this class because the best pilot left. This visibly affects him but later we see he doesn't harbor any ill feelings against his team.
Tumblr media
He plans on taking Pidge with them for a fun night in town, and he is being a rebellious teen here but also keeps mentioning how important it is for the trio to bond as a team.
Tumblr media
Later in the roof, is his observation about Pidge's strong reactions to any mention of Kerberos and his insistance that they need to bond as a team that convince Pidge to tell then about what she was investigating.
Tumblr media
And it may seem that Lance is using the "team bonding" as a excuse to just hang out but it is something he mentions constantly and Pidge has noticed it. We see in a flashback of Pidge's first meeting with them that Lance was eager to welcome them into the team and get to know their new member.
And even if Pidge blew them off quite rudely, Lance still tried to include them.
Tumblr media
In the comics, Pidge mentions "team work" and "team awareness" as some of Lance's strenghts. So Lance being heavily team oriented has not gone unnoticed by her.
Back in the topic of perception, the rooftop was not the only moment we had of Lance being observant of Pidge's behaviour.
Tumblr media
In the Game Show, Lance had trouble recalling Rolo's name, but had the detail that Pidge liked Beezer very present.
And it's Lance's awareness of Pidge's behaviour and her absence around Rover that made him realise that robot was an impostor.
Speaking of "The Fall of the Castle of Lions", is in that episode where Pidge reveals she is thinking of leaving Voltron, and while she is the one with a made up mind Hunk also expresses his desire to leave and being unsure of being in the team. Allura herself says "This team is falling apart." It takes Lance getting hurt for the team to spring to action and that helps both of the members being hesitant in staying reach an understanding of the importance of being a Paladin. Pidge in particular since she realises she has not being present for her team that much (Lance and Hunk) but she is willing to help them now.
Even by accident, Lance helps the team stay together.
Tumblr media
This episode also has the moment where a hurt and weak Lance shots Sendak to get him to drop Pidge. Later it's implied that Lance doesn't remember this moment, so he was barely conscious.
Again, a barely conscious and weak Lance decided to use his remaining strenghts to help his friend in peril.
This is not the only moment we see Lance being protective of Pidge, in later seasons, where the team gets captured by Zethrid and Ezor. To get them to talk, Zethrid assumes the paladins have a soft spot for "the small one".
She is right, but the first (and only one) to react in that moment is Lance.
Tumblr media
We also see this protectiveness in more subtle ways, in the episodes where they are talking about the possibility of getting Sam Holt back.
Tumblr media
At first he looks on board with giving Lotor because of his personal grievances with him, but then understands how serious Pidge is about this and even looks a worried at her outburst.
And then, when Zarkon double crosses them and doesn't give Sam back, Lance is the first to react and tells the team to go down and help.
Lance just really dislikes seeing his friends in any kind of distress.
And I know I said Keith and Allura's parts were going to be the longest but turns out that the 10 pic limit is still my enemy and there is still some things I want to talk about related to Lance and Pidge interactions.

Jesse's Blog Masterpost
Hey people of Tumblr! I've created a lot of art, fics and metas in the past few years. Although I dab into other fandoms too, VLD remains the focus of this blog - in the form of illustrations, fanfics and metas (some artworks are still available as prints in my Ko-fi shop). This is an updated masterpost of links to the most representative artworks and fanfics, as well as every meta I've written. Yup, a lot of Lotura. :)
Tumblr media
VLD art (#jesseblue draws) Here are some of my favorite artworks created in the past few years: Dancing Allura Here's Some Alchemy Lotor gets a massage Bedtime Lotura Allura on the Moon Halloween Lotura New Year Lotura Lotura's Alchemy Lasts Forever - my most popular artwork Plance Dance Wardrobe Updates - Lotura Week 2023 entry Beach Day - Lotura Week 2023 entry Wardrobe Updates - Lotor - Lotura Week 2023 entry Wardrobe Updates - Allura - Lotura Week 2023 entry Lotura's Celestial Wedding Lilac Love - Lotura Week 2024 entry Drawings inspired by other writers' fics: "Quiet!" - a Pidge and Keith drawing Lotor clawing his way out of a muddy situation DotU Lotor chopping wood Some art was created for my fanfic "Nothing Ever Truly Goes Extinct": Story banner "Allura, please..." Oh No, Lotor: Why Lotor should not be among the Paladins of Old in the final scenes of VLD.
Sleeping Allura: Some logical deductions based on basic rules of cinematography, regarding the very last scene in S8E10 - Knights of Light Part 2.
Decoding Voltron’s Rosetta Stone: My biggest meta (seriously, it’s really long), an interpretative analysis of numerous symbols in the official VLD comics - which, at a first glance look absolutely innocent, yet oftentimes eerily cryptic, especially the Yalexian Pearl book.
Lion vs. Wolf: An extension of the previous meta, focused on a comparison between the White Lion - Guardian of Oriande and Gantomor - Warden of the Sacred Hunting Grounds (comics).
So Safe and Warm: Why “Luxia’s Kingdom” actually reads “Altea” in the last commercial scene of “The Feud”.
Petrulius - What Happened to You?: Questioning the purpose of Lotor’s pods on the moon colony, by comparing the images of Petrulius and the original (doctor) Haggar.
Allura Drawn over Lotor (with gifs): Mostly a visual meta with gifs, showing Allura was drawn over Lotor in the last episode, as part of the post-animation edits.
I Have Beezer Questions: Several observations regarding animation inconsistencies during the Allura and Lance first kiss scene, most notably their flipped placement on the screen and Beezer’s trajectory.
A Noble Cause: An interpretation of Allura’s vision in Clear Day, if we were to start from the premise that Lotor was infusing his moon Alteans with the Entity. The Zarkon-Honerva-Lotor meta trilogy - an in-depth analysis of the profound reasons that led to the tragic descent into madness of these three antagonist characters. Prepare for reading some long metas, especially Lotor's: Slowly Going Mad - Part I - Zarkon Slowly Going Mad - Part II - Honerva Slowly Going Mad - Part III - Lotor I also wrote one short meta about Aaravos, from The Dragon Prince (my speculation turned out to be true, heh).

𝚃𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝙵𝚕𝚒𝚐𝚑𝚝 (𝙿𝚝 𝟸)
Lance is talking to Nyma away from the rest of the team.
"I mean, there are only six of us in the entire universe, so I guess you could say it's kind of a big deal" He says.
"I don't understand. The lions are ships? Are they, like, flying statues that you ride on?" Nyma asks.
"No, no, no. They're magic, but also super scientific and advanced. And they fly crazy fast and have all these incredible weapons. Really, the entire Castle is just insane. I wish you could see it"
"Yes, it's too bad we're not allowed inside. I would love a tour from one of the knights. But I guess the big one is in charge, huh? You have to obey his orders?" Nyma says, looking at Hunk.
"Who, Hunk?  I don't have to listen to him!" Lance says. He brings Nyma inside the Castle of Lions to the bridge.
"This place in incredible"
"Yeah, I guess. You get used to it"
"But it's so gigantic. It must take you forever to get to your lion." She said.
"Ooh, you'd be surprised" Lance brings Nyma with him down the zip-line to the Blue Lion's cockpit.
"Pretty slick, right?" I said. "Unbelievable! Take me on a ride around the moon?" Nyma says.
"We should probably get back to the others" Lance says,
"Yeah, you're right. Maybe Keith will give me a ride"
"No! Hold on a second! I mean what's the point of having the lion if you can't enjoy it, right? Giddy-up, buddy!" Lance activates the Blue Lion and takes off with Nyma.
==
Hunk is working on Rolo's ship, but witnesses the Blue Lion leave.
"Oh, Lance!"
"Ah, let them have their fun. Thanks to you, this thing is just about ready, so we're going to be on our way soon. Too many light years on that guy, I guess" Rolo says. Hunk suspiciously eyes the part he replaced.
"Yeah" Y/N looks around.
"Has anyone seen Soul?" She asks.
==
Inside the Blue Lion, Soul peeks around the corner to see Lance and Nyma in the cockpit. Lance fly's the Blue Lion around the moon.
"Look, a kinetic spring! Let's land over there. The minerals reflect off the water, making a rainbow" The Blue Lion flies over the spring, causing water to spray and a rainbow to appear.
"Wow. Is there anything you don't know" Lance said. With Lance distracted, Nyma presses a button on her bracelet to signal Rolo.
==
Rolo suddenly exits the engine of his ship.
"I think this thing is just about ready for a test flight. Beezer, come co-pilot for me.  Be back in a tick" Rolo and Breezer enter their ship, leaving the Voltron team dumbfounded outside.
"Uh..." Rolo's spacecraft takes flight with no issues at all.
==
Elsewhere, Lance and Nyma stand at the kinetic spring by a tree.
"So, ah, you want to see how fast I can climb this tree?" Lance said. Nyma giggles.
"Aw, you are cute. Let me show you something. Give me your hand" Lance offers Nyma his hand and she handcuffs him to the tree.
"Whoa! Uh, this is...king of..." Rolo's ship appears and abducts the Blue Lion "Nyma, what's going on?"
"Sorry, Lance. Maybe we'll meet again" Nyma grabs onto the rope only for Soul to bite on her hand "Ow!" She grabs Soul with her other hand.
"Soul! How did you get here?!"
"Your that purple ones pet. I might just keep you" Nyma grips Soul by the scruff of her back and the two are raised into her ship and it takes off, leaving Lance behind. Lance looks around for his helmet to contact his team and sees it out of reach.
 "Oh, Quiznak!"
==
The rest of the team is waiting outside the Castle of Lions.
"How many ticks have they been gone?" Pidge asks, swinging her legs.
"Probably hours" Y/N says, upside down besides Pidge.
"I don't know. I hope they didn't break down again" Allura said.
"Something ain't right." Hunk said.
"Guys? Hello? Little help?" Lance says. Y/N, startled by the noise, falls on her head.
"Ow" She gets up and puts on her helmet, everyone following.
"Lance? Lance! Are you all right? W-What's going on?" Shiro said into the comm. "Well, I'm kind of chained to a tree" Lance says. Y/N laughs.
"I knew it!" Hunk said with his arms crossed.
"And I think Nyma and Rolo just stole the Blue Lion" Lance continues.
"I knew it!" Hunk shouted.
"And Soul"
"I kne-" Hunk pause.
"What" Y/N says, teeth grinding.
"Where are they?" Shiro asks.
"Uh...space?"
==
Hunk rants at length as the Paladins head to their Lions.
"Uh, I never trusted those guys, from the beginning!" Hunk rants "I mean oh at first it was just like a feeling in my gut, you know, but when I was replacing that pipe, the pipe was cracked, but none of the hardware around it was damaged"
"Okay, we get it!" Keith shouts. Hunk continues.
"I mean if the thermal pipe is cracked, then, obviously, hello, the entire assembly should be totally roasted" Everyone starts getting annoyed by his rambling.
"Okay, we get it!" Keith said again.
"We should've had to replace the entire undercarriage of that reactor. So, right then, I was, like, positive. Foul play" Hunk said.
"Okay, we get it!" They all shout. The remaining Lions chase after Rolo, Nyma and Breezer.
==
Rolo contracts Prorok through a video transmission.
"Commander Prorok, my name is Rolo. I understand you're offering a reward to anyone helping capture the Voltron Lions" Rolo says.
"That's correct. Do you know where they are?" Prorok asks.
"I know where the blue one is. It's in my ship"
"Excellent. Bring it to me and you'll have your reward immediately"
"Just a tick. My friends and I have a bit of a checkered past. Some stolen merchandise from the Galra Empire may have fallen into our possession without us knowing about it" Rolo says. Prorok hums in response.
"Well, I'm sure that a full pardon can be arranged for the brave souls who bring Emperor Zarkon a Voltron Lion. Is that all?" He said.
"We'll take the reward, too." Nyma says.
"Of course"
"All right. We're on our way" The transmission ends. Rolo stretches.
"I almost feel sorry for those Voltron folks. Seemed like a nice bunch." Rolo said.
"If you're feeling guilty, you can turn yourself in. Stealing from Zarkon carries a life sentence"
"They don't seem that nice" Rolo says "Now, tell me again. Why did you take her?"
"Why not, look how cute she it. Besides, her species are rare these days. Maybe we could sell her" Nyma says, walking over to a caged Soul "Isn't that right" Soul growls and tries to bite Nyma through the cage.
"Or she could bite their fingers off" Rolo's alarms start blaring because the remaining Lions are closing in "No way" Rolo starts to fly his spacecraft to safety.
"Are you sure you know what you're doing?" Nyma asks "There's no way we can outrun those Lions"
"Not in the open. Good thing the Zorlar asteroid belt is right up here. I know that like the back of my hand"
==
The criminal aliens fly into the asteroid belt.
"We'll  never get through this asteroid field!" Pidge shouts.
"Maybe I can just bust through!" Hunk slams the Yellow Lion into an asteroid, causing all the asteroids to bump against each other "Nope. That was wrong. That was a bad idea"
"Maybe someone can get through" Y/N mumbles "Keith, you're the only one who could possibly fly through this"
"Y/N's right. We need you, buddy. Get in there and flush him out" Shiro says.
"You got it. See you on the other side" Keith pursues Rolo in the Red Lion, navigating the asteroid field easily.
==
Rolo's computer shows the Red Lion nearby.
"No way. Get on the blasters. Take him down!" Rolo orders.
"Copy" Nyma and Breezer fire the ship's laser blasters at the Red Lion. Keith doges the attack and fires his Lion's mouth cannon in retaliation.
"This kid can flat-out fly"
"He's gaining on you!" Rolo tries tricking Keith into crashing into an asteroid; Keith avoids the trick and flings the Red Lion's jaw blade at Rolo's spacecraft. The attack disables the ship's weapons "Blasters are offline!"
"We've got yo get out of here!" Rolo tries to flee. Keith fires the Red Lion's mouth cannon at their engines. The criminal's ship is knocked out of the asteroid belt. Keith catches them with the Red Lion. The other Lions arrive.
"Yeah! Haha! Hey, Lance, I got your Lion back" Lance and Keith talk through their helmets' communicators.
"Thank you, Keith. Now, can you come and unchain me?" Lance asks.
"What's that? I, uh... Y-You're cutting out. I can't—I can't hear you" Y/N laughs.
"Oh, come on! I thought we bonded. Keith? Buddy? My man?"
==
The Team rescues Lance and returns Rolo and his crew to the alien moon with their broken ship. They stand outside the Castle of Lions. Soul sits on Keith's shoulder.
"Since your ship really doesn't work now, you'll have to wait here for a rescue" Y/N says.
"Thanks for sparing our lives" Rolo says.
"Now that these guys are dealt with, let's get to the Balmera and save Shay and her family"
"You may not believe this, but I hope you do stop Zarkon. It's a lifetime of fighting the Galra that led me to where I am today." Rolo says. The Team looks considerate, but does not respond and leave.
==
Keith walks into the bridge, Soul still on his shoulder, the others follow. He feels a tickle on his cheek and turns his head to see Soul lick him; he freezes. Y/N laughs.
"Don't worry, it doesn't mean she sees you as food" She says "She likes you"
"What. Why?"
"Well, because you saved her. I'm guessing they hold a strong liking to who ever saves them"
"That is partly true" Coran says, walking over "Creavnolians are very grateful creatures. If they are ever saved, they will forever respect that being that saved them" Lance goes to stroke Soul only for her to hiss, and he jumps away "However, that also means that Creavnolians also have a good memory, to remember those who save them, but also those who get them into trouble"
"Do something, Y/N! She's looking at me like I'm some kind of snack!" Y/N shakes her head.
"You hungry, Soul?" Keith asks, Soul nods.
"I'm sorry! I'll be good, I promise!" Everyone laughs.

Chibi watches V3D 04
Don't ask where I got the strength to watch another episode tonight. But I did. And before I get to my notes from my watch, I realized something. I realized where this animation is feeling so familiar from. It’s taking me back to Odyssey: Into the Mind’s Eye. Which apparently came out in 1996 and was part of a computer animation series in the early/mid 90s. This was my introduction as a wee little Chibi to computer animation. And it was all set to music. Watching V3D is making me think of that, which is kinda nice and nostalgic.
Okay, now without further ado, here be my notes of my watch through.
The title alone being “Lost Souls”. Already, my curiosity is piqued.
Watching now and Lotor using the castle as his sort of ship now, it has me thinking. Is this perhaps where VLD got the concept of Zarkon’s command center being mobile and the planet destroyed? Ah, gotta love watching old Voltron stuff and seeing how they may have influenced the new. I love it.
Jeez, that glorified calculator pretty much blaming failed peace talks on the Voltron force. Dude, those peace talks wouldn’t have gone well anyway. Lotor’s a Grade A bastard. He never intended to be peaceful to begin with. You would think with the tech and AI to that calculator he’d be smart enough to figure it out, but. Alas. And who gave this calculator the right to suspend the force! And having the drones pilot the lions? That doesn’t sound good. Five minutes in, I hope the lions show sentience and reject those drones.
Arus may be part of the alliance, but it feels like utter bullshit that the Garrison can dictate what happens with the lions.
About eight minutes in, and a comment on audio. Right. Now I know why I’m cautious with shows. Some shows have certain sounds and frequencies that actually hurt the ears. Thankfully the multiplying of the ships and the sound it made didn’t last too long.
“Relax Hunk, the alliance only needs big, dumb, and obedient, and you only score two out of the three. Hahaha!” Damn, Pidge, that was actually rude. Poor Hunk… c’mon, man.
That calculator controlling the drones for the lions… Voltron isn’t a one man team, dude. It’s the five people! Like Alfor said, the pilots are the souls! Now I get the title.
“Through you, I will demonstrate the robots are superior to humans.” Yeah. I watched Voltron Force and VLD. Robots aren’t exactly superior. Unless you count Beezer and Rover in VLD, because they’re adorable. But not exactly superior, but rather equal.
HAH! Fourteen minutes in and the lions can’t form Voltron. So, it’s the soul aspect of the team that lets them form Voltron. Intriguing. And perfect. It shows that you can’t just program everything to go your way.
“I fear there’s no hope.” Whose fault is that, you damn calculator.
Also, watching the top of the lion’s head open up to eject the robot is an interesting take. Gives it more of the toy feel to the lions.
I will admit, I’m not feeling the plating that covered Red’s head to make a point for an attack. It’s a little… weird. But hey, at least the team proved that they’re superior to soulless drones and could get their lions and form Voltron.
Anyway, that's it for tonight's "Chibi watches". Until next time!

So, this is the second part to my embarassment of a post. I will be assuming you've read it before reading this one and if you didn't you should check it out first. With that out of the way, let's just continue.
Again, there's this big problem I'm facing when writing AI characters because I'm trying to stay grounded to what actually makes sense. And I'm afraid that because of that I'm either creating something that's been done (EDI) or simply making them autistic-coded (well, I suppose it's a reason why I relate to AI characters so much). Or worse I can make them straight up bland and boring. Which is something I don't want to do. So, if you feel like telling me my version of N-7's character is meh I get it. Perhaps, I can do something better for her if I'll ever write anything for this.
But I do think connections are a better way to define a character so let's get on with it. I've talked about Mary Ann and N-7, and briefly mentioned Ozar taking care of her in Mary Ann's stead. I see N-7 working with Ozar as sort of a secretary. They'd have a mentor-mentee relationship where Ozar's experience helps N-7 form her own values and understanding of the world. And in turn Ozar could revaluate some of his life choices according to feedback N-7 would give to him. Obviously, this shouldn't be exclusive to these characters only, but given the context of them having a deeper bond I thought I'd mention it. And I see this bond as important because in my headcanon lore N-7 would be mostly isolated from others (until S4) just working and rarely making an effort to try and define herself outside of being helpful. To Te-Osh she will be the part of her old friend. Te-Osh was there to oversee the progress during N-7's development and was just as proud of the result as Mary Ann was. They didn't up growing as close as N-7 and Ozar would but they still respected each other. Te-Osh trusted N-7 enough to let her train Matt in her stead while she had an injury. So, you could say Te-Osh and Ozar were the few proper connections N-7 had prior to joining Olia's cew. As before that no one really made any effort to try and relate to her on a personal level. Mostly due to isolation and the way she holds herself. And because she's a robot, yes.
So, it's really good when she puts herself out there and gets more involved with other rebel officers. From what we've seen, which isn't a lot or anything to begin with, Olia and N-7's relationship is that of mutual respect and I imagine Olia just trusts N-7 wholeheartedly to do her best job. Olia likes to figure people out no matter what they're made of. She's a good judge of character. This gets challenged by N-7's usual upbringing but they make it work. It may get to a point where their beliefs clash but it's alright. Olia has a large collection of books from her homeworld that N-7 reads in her spare time. Sometimes Olia has to step in to clarify that what the books depict may not always be the accurate portrayal of how something works in real life. Like, when it comes to romance books. Especially when it comes to romance books.
And now we finally get to Matt. Because this whole thing has always been Matt-centric in my head. Kinda like SW Rebels is Ezra-centric. Oh, god, why do I have to justify this being Matt-centric. Anyway.
Matt is kind of a mess. A panicked, lost, traumatized and withdrawn kind of mess. He gets abducted by aliens (which in other circumstances would be quite exciting), gets separated from his father, almost has to fight the beastman (which we know would get him killed) before Shiro injures him and fights in his stead, then gets sent to another prisoner ship for workers. He's isolated from the only people he knew. And even they can be as good as dead for all Matt knows. That's a lot to handle for someone his age and experience. Then he gains a new cellmate. The only person who seems to understand what he's saying. It's his first real bond with someone in what feels like an eternity. It's what makes their friendship special to him. Gus gave Matt support and hope that he can make it through. And save his dad, and potentially Shiro, given the latter's not dead. And this hope is paid off by the appearance of the rebel squad that later comes to their rescue.
Matt is rescued by the rebel fighters and taken under Te-Osh's wing until he is able to stand his own ground. His injury is generally taken care of and Matt can begin to receive his combat training. Soon enough he is able to participate in some of the ground missions like raids and scouting. It's not without occasional mishaps but nothing fatal.
I imagine because of his help to Gus while on the prisoner ship he got the attention of the rebel officers who would invite him to join their forces. And while hesitantly Matt decides to take the offer. Because he understands they're his only way to find dad and Shiro and go back home. He sees it as an opportunity. So, that's his priority at the time. It's only after spending time with the rebels and learning more about the Galra and what they've been doing to everyone his priorities begin to shift from his needs to the greater picture. And then a bigger mishap happens. And Matt allows himself to be seen without a mask while also pissing someone off so bad they put a bounty on his head. Tbh I haven't exactly thought out the way it happens. Only that it was mostly because of Matt's carelessness or trusting nature. I will have to think about that some more. So, for him it's only logical he is to be transferred to a remote location hidden from everyone and contributing to the cause by listening in on the Galra radio chatter. There begins another period of isolation for him.
Until his location is compromised by Pidge. Damn, bro, it's like the Paladins can't do anything without compromising Coalition bases. But, yeah, Matt takes care of the equipment and leaves with Pidge. As for his time in isolation I can't say anything interesting happens. Matt collects the data and reflects on his life. It's not a very great time for him. Isolation can do a number on one's mental health. Especially if it wasn't that great in the first place. Tbf there are barely any signs of this when Pidge finds him in canon. But canon who? It's at this point when Matt finally gets to meet people he was separated from for Bob knows how long. And in addition to that he also gets to learn that Shiro did survive the arena and is doing well (even though that wasn't the real Shiro but okay). Only thing left to do is find their dad. Except now Matt knows not to put his wishes before the mission/the needs of others. That's why he wouldn't come back to Earth given the opportunity.
But I went ahead of myself. Prior to Lotor joining the party Matt has to regroup with his former rebel squad. He joins Olia's crew and reunites with some of the familiar faces. Except for Te-Osh. Who is dead. But I'm not going to get into that here. He also gets to meet some of the new people like Meloi (the alien rebel with long ponytail looking ears? or whatever it is? the name is original), Slav, and the trouble trio - Nyma, Rolo and Beezer. They're Spare Pirates and they haven't fully joined the Coalition but they're willing to lend their help in the upcoming attack if it means getting back at the Galra and because extra credits are extra credits.
This is also that time period when the Paladins were making fools of themselves during the Voltron show. It gets the attention, sure. But I can't help but think of how tone deaf it all seemed to the rebel fighters. Who at the time were busy doing the dirty work.
The cooperation between the rebels and the BoM is another thing I should think more about. So far it's unclear how involved they are with each other. And I wonder if they ever crossed each other's path before Voltron. It's important because it's very unclear what Matt and Keith's relationship is like in the show. They clearly care about one another but have they had interactions off-screen? Joint missions or something? Unclear. I like to imagine that they did.
And Matt continues to learn as much as he can about the alien tech while living out his Mass Effect dreams. Which becomes even easier when Lotor joins the party. Because his knowledge has been a great help for the Coalition. That is until he becomes the Emperor and Shiro decides it would be a great idea to sync the Galra map with the one from the Castle of Lions. Which in hindsight was a pretty bad idea (I mean, yeah, that was the clone Shiro, but no one objected either). I can't even begin to imagine the Coalition's reaction to learning that all of their secret bases were now revealed to the Galra Empire. It's especially fucked up for the Blades for how much they relied on secrecy. Damn, they didn't deserve this crap. It still bothers me how no one talks about that.
So, the disappearance of Voltron. Another event that left a huge impact on the state of the Coalition. It still pains me that they decided to pull the time-space-skip to force the plot to take place on Earth. I mean, you know how the beginning of S6 had this whole thing going on about the Galra Civil War and how Lotor needed the Quintessence field to stop it. And then they just... dropped it. Like they never even wanted to deal with that and skipped right to the end. It's just sad because to me it seemed like a very interesting plot point. We were given some basic info on the Civil War and how it affected the Coalition. For one many rebel fighters have been wiped out. How that happened is a whole other story that I would have to think about some more later. But, damn, that's 3 whole years that they just skipped and it's the most interesting time period too, because we know so little about it. I mean it surely boosted Matt's character development as evidenced by the second glow up. He must have been devastated to learn that his little sister disappeared along with the rest of the Voltron - their symbol of hope.
It is at this point I am also struggling with what I want to write down in this point and what I want to omit for the sake of any of my future works. But to keep it brief it's a very bad time period for the Coalition. They're forced to adapt to changes brought by Lotor and Voltron which is extremely difficult when they also have to navigate Galra's Civil War and avoid being hunted. Some rebel officers ended up joining Galra warlords to escape their fate in exchange for the information on the Coalition. Rebel forces have been divided which made them easier targets for space pirates. And at this point Matt and the gang are just trying to stay alive and lay low. Matt's skills at keeping himself hidden come in handy. They also are constantly on the move, making sure they leave no trails. With how unstable the state of the galaxy is there's really no telling what will happen the very next minute. And then they're also struggling for resources all the time. Now more than ever. There is a need to regroup and rebuild the alliances which becomes nearly impossible when the Galra's craft is simply superior to anything the rebel fighters have. It almost feels like they have to start from the ground up. Fortunately, some of the rebel officers managed to stay low for as long as they could thanks to being stationed on various listening outposts. You know, like Wakala and Remdax. It's really helpful to have all these "sleeper agents'' when it's time to assemble. So, it takes 3 years for the state of the galaxy to stabilize a little. And for the rebels to regroup. Galra beating the hell out of each other meaning there's less warlords potentially coming after their asses. And the Fire of Purification basically built their own Empire. Rebel fighters take every opportunity they can get from this nonsense and rebuild their support system. They take it step by step and help who they can.
When the Fire of Purification moves to Earth it's an opportunity because that leaves the biggest enemy out of the picture (to be completely honest with you I cannot find anything that suggests the possible time of when they attacked Earth. I am probably missing something but all I can find is that it happened during the time-skip. No sign of when exactly that is except maybe for the confirmed "not earlier than 6 months after Voltron disappeared". This obscutiry gives me anxiety because I feel like it was mentioned somewhere and I'm just too stupid to find it.). Okay, so obviously those are not good news for Matt especially when they receive Sam's transmission. Thankfully, soon comes Krolia who is there to tell the rebels about everything that happened. And later they arrive on Earth. That's basically it for the general history of events.
I know I haven't exactly discovered America with this post but writing it has been both fun and exhausting. I'm glad I got to put my thoughts out there and I hope others will enjoy it as well. For the rest of the post I'll just write some of the headcanons... like I was supposed to from the beginning... instead of writing some stupid essay. Well, anyway.
Matt is good with kids, so Olia's pups love him. They call him Uncle Matt.
Olia has this no nonsense attitude. Slav finds it especially intimidating because of her fangs.
Speaking of Slav, my man has been a great addition to the coalition thanks to his brains. Matt enjoys spending time with him. There's a lot of interesting theories Slav talks about that Matt is intrigued by.
Rolo didn't die. He found the few remaining members of his species including some very old friends and stayed with them to help. He still has ways to contact his rebel friends, so it's all good.
Nyma became a proper rebel officer. For the most part because she had nowhere else to go and the coalition needed every help they could get. And she does care for Matt and the gang too. Her charisma proves to be helpful when the situation calls for it. I also like to think she's got some medical training as well. And that area she grew up in specialized in medicine. Weed too.
Beezer is hard to headcanon because I have to also make sure I'm not treating him as an astromech from Star Wars. He was likely stolen from the Space Mall as we've seen a similar looking model at Vrepit Sal's cafeteria. Both Rolo and Nyma understand what Beezer's saying perfectly and they use it to their advantage quite often. Matt would learn the droid language soon too.
Being Space Pirates Rolo, Nyma and Beezer would often get bored with nothing to do. So they have Beezer broadcast the closest TV channel they can connect to. They become quite knowledgeable in the lore of that one Bii-Boh-Bi sitcom. And they've watched so many trash shows like this they have to restrain themselves from making a reference in random situations. It makes them insufferable when they decide to tease someone. Like Matt.
N-7 accidentally jumpscares people. She also uses a longsword as her weapon of choice.
Olia rarely fights, she's more of a pilot, but when she does she usually just uses a pistol.
At this point it's getting a little tiring, so I'll just end it there. Maybe I'll write some more for the gang. Just not now.

Just Beezer casually happening to need to get flowers for Pidge and Colleen at the exact time in the exact place of Lance and Allura’s date. Nothing orchestrated here folks.
You’re not subtle Pidge

It is sweet, though, even if she sent a little stalker after them, she just had Beezer ensure they were happy and could remember their date together.
