Blister Beetles: Pretty colors, serious powers
🌿🐞 Did you know about Nuttall’s Blister Beetles? These vibrant insects are a part of our local parks and greenspaces, often found on flowers like lupines and milk-vetch.  🌼 While they may look beautiful with their bright colors, handling them can be risky!  🚫 Their bodies contain cantharidin, a toxin that causes skin blistering if mishandled. Here’s how to enjoy nature safely:  👀 Spot them…

My best finds of 2024! I recently got an job as an entomologist so insects (and other arthropods) have been on the mind
The luna moth landed on me when I went out on my front porch to look for insects one night this summer! I was extremely careful to not touch her wings. The rainbow scarab is probably the coolest insect I've ever seen in person. The one pictured is male, and was found in my swimming pool. He was promptly moved somewhere safe! I do not have a species on that millipede so if anyone does please share!!
All of these guys were handled with extreme care if at all. And the poor little hornworm had been victimized by a parasitioid wasp :( sad but so cool to see in person.
Just wanted to share!! 🪲🦋🐛

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Coleoptera. This order is made up of beetles. It is the largest of all orders, containing 25% of all known animal species. Members include ladybugs, fireflies and hercules beetles
Hymenoptera. This order is made up of wasps, ants, and bees. Their mouthparts are adapted for chewing, or in many species have become a proboscis for sucking nectar.

is there any distinction between a shellcreeper and a koopa in your mario au
yes, there is! Shellcreepers are the extinct ancestor of koopas and their relatives. Some of their relatives strayed pretty far from the original design. (See cladogram below the cut)

I got a pet pac-man frog recently and for the life of me I cannot come up with a good name for them, so I'm gonna roll the BLAST dice and see what comes up from this :D
Their too young to sex for now, and they're a coffee morph (Which means their much more brown and less green than normal), and I love them dearly already
Tumblr media
They're still pretty small, so they're in a small little plastic container for now until they grow big enough to be in the 20 gallon-long tank I have

bees this, bees that, okay but what about ladybirds.
everyone knows bees are great for the ecosystem and basically provide us with most of our food. (and i love them for that)
but did you know ladybird beetles are our biological pest control? they prey on aphids and control their population - aphids can cause serious damage to crops so farmers love them (and i do too) with one ladybird beetle eating up to 5000 aphids in their lifetime.
commonly called ladybugs - although they are not actually bugs, but beetles! the main difference between the two is the mouth - bugs will pierce, beetles will chew. another key difference is the shape of the wings. which is why lady-beetle is also another common name.
ladybirds are cool :D one of my favourite bugs (beetles)

Wake up babe, new taxonomy classification system just dropped
Since 25% of species on earth are beetles, so I have decided the scientific community should start classifying things as “beetle,” “not a beetle,” and “sort of a beetle.” I have provided examples below
(For all intents and purposes, a beetle is defined as being small, having 6 legs, an exoskeleton, and the ability to fly)
