I finally watched Between Us...

Before I give my opinion, I do want to say that before watching I had binged UWMA for the umpteenth time, so that series was very fresh in my mind. I was also watching it with two of my mutuals: one who was a fan of Between Us and the other who didn't particularly enjoy it but was also a huge UWMA fan like me.

If I were to just take it as it is at face value, then I have to say it's not as bad as some people claim it to be. However, I am coming into the series as an UWMA/WinTeam fan so because of that I have several problems with the end product.

1) Continuity went out the window on several occasions. Again, this might not be as important to some people, but my UWMA brain just could not shut off.

2) BeePrince were completely unnecessary to the story especially with Prince having absolutely NO connection to either main character.

3) New's editing is sooo bizarre. There are so many flashbacks of the same scenes, in their entirety, sometimes right after these scenes just occurred. I know it wasn't his intention but it sort of devalues the intelligence of the audience and the acting ability of his actors. Like trust in your actors to convey the proper emotions needed to push a scene forward rather than having to playback why it is they are feeling what they are feeling. We get it! We don't need to see it pushed in our faces over and over again. Boun and Prem are more than capable, and if you need to recall a specific moment a short little flashback or voiceover will do…you don't need to play the entire scene over. Which brings me to

4) The entire series felt like it was padding for time. My co-watcher mentioned to me that New had said that they didn't have enough material to make 12 episodes. Then why did you film 12 episodes my guy? You could have either a) shortened the series or b) pulled more from the source material which had a lot more story to offer than what was chosen to film. The novel wasn't finished at the time, sure, but Sheep had written enough at that point to delve deeper into the characters. Team's entire background was changed….for what? The novel's version made a lot more sense and would have provided a lot more insight into Team's struggle. Team's journey to therapy was just left by the wayside. I guess….who needs therapy to deal with traumatic life events anyway? There was just so much they left out/changed that could have made for a better overall series (and would have absolutely filled 12 episodes worth of relevant content). If the issue was the unfinished novel, time constraints, or lack of funding then we had already waited three years my dude. I would have had no problem waiting longer for a more polished final result.

All in all, I think BP did a fantastic job with what they were given, but they deserved a lot better. We, as an audience, deserved better. WinTeam deserved better.

I'm just left with a feeling of dissatisfaction because this series really had the potential (with all its elements) to be great and it fell so short.

Before this year, I would've said Boun, but right now, it's Krist.

I've always thought of BounPrem and KristSingto as the "main pairs" I follow, and even though Krist and Singto aren't officially a branded pair anymore, I still follow them separately. So I'm kind of a, uh, BounPrem, Krist, Singto fan now asdfghkj

When Between Us ended and BounPrem said they wouldn't have another series together for a while, I moved my focus to Krist because he had Be My Favorite coming up, and I'd been excited for BMF since 2021. And now, since I've followed Krist so closely this year, since I've gone back and familiarized myself more with his past work, and since I was fortunate enough to meet him in person last month and see for myself how kind and sincere and good he is, I'm very invested in seeing him happy and succeed the way he deserves. (Like, it's very clear why he's so beloved when you look into who he actually is, so it's been surreal to see how desperately interfans want to hate him. I was in his restaurant with other fans when GMMTV finally released a statement in his defense, and it was such a relief, I teared up. Some interfans are trying the "he used to be a bad person but he's better now" take at the moment, so I'm just waiting for them to take the next step and admit that he was never a monster in the first place and that hundreds of interfans have gleefully tortured him and trashed his reputation for years based on misinformation.)

Like I keep saying: the loudest anti-Krist voices are interfans. If he actually was what they claim, wouldn't his most ardent antis be from his own country? I've spoken to Thai fans of different actors: this is an interfan bandwagon that got blown out of proportion.

Now, of course, Krist and Boun have always been pretty closely tied in my heart, so if you talk to me once the BounPrem vampire series airs, I'll be focused on BounPrem again. I'm not one of those "you have to follow everything someone does or else you're a fake fan" people, so I only watch what I like. BounPrem have been doing a lot of fanmeetings and separate work this year that I wasn't interested in following, so I've just been patiently waiting for the vampire series to air. Even though I don't even like vampires. I just love BounPrem that much. :')

Sci-Fi/Fantasy! I'm writing a fantasy novel right now, and most of my favorite stories are in the sci-fi/fantasy/speculative genres. :D

-- Until We Meet Again or Between Us the Series --

UWMA!

It was my first Thai BL series, and it launched my whole fandom life here. It still has such a strong presence in my memories, and I think it was a true labor of love from every angle.

I think BounPrem were incredible in Between Us, but I don't think Between Us was the series they deserved. In the months since it ended, I've gotten more critical of how Between Us was handled and it's dropped quite a few spaces on my list. I think if they had stuck closer to the novel, removed BeePrince completely, used fewer flashbacks, fewer UWMA clips, and not tried to cram six musical tracks into some scenes to guide viewers' emotions, it would have been a stronger series. I honestly get the impression New did it for BounPrem rather than out of a genuine love for the characters, and that might be why it didn't have the spark UWMA does. I think it was a labor of love for BounPrem, and I think New loves BounPrem, but I don't think he loved WinTeam's story as much as he loved DeanPharm's. Not his fault, but a different director might've been a better choice for the project.

Be My Favorite!

From 2020-2022 my top three were 1) UWMA, 2) SOTUS, and 3) DBK, but then I did an honest reevaluation and realized that over time, SOTUS has had just a tiny bit more of an emotional impact on me than UWMA, so it took the top spot. And of course Triage came along and blasted up to take DBK's spot.

As soon as I saw the teaser in 2021, I knew I'd love Be My Favorite, I just never expected it to…Be My Favorite. \:D/

It's time travel, it's Krist, it's Gawin, it's queer as fuck, and it's the closest to perfect I've seen yet. Ever since it ended, I've just been in this bubble of bliss. I can't believe it exists, that we got such a perfect casting, that Gawin and Krist became so close, that they see each other as family now, that that chemistry is so clear in the series. It's just one of those significant series that rearranges your brain chemistry, like SOTUS, UWMA, and DBK before it were for me. <3

Okay, so with the understanding that most subject material can be great in the hands of a great storyteller, just from a, "Hey, Key, this series/book/TV show has a __ storyline," basis, I'll go with Time Loop. Time shenanigans is one of the fastest way to hook me (Be My Favorite, Triage, I Feel You Linger, etc.).

WinTeam. Always, always WinTeam. :')

They're just the ultimate OTP for me. Of any series, movie, book, anything. I think it'll always be WinTeam for me.

Hmm. For Thai BL: series. In general: book. From what I understand, a lot of the novels Thai BL series are based on tend to be very rough. Like, written and uploaded by the author without an editing process or even a beta reader in the middle. LazySheep (Red Thread/UWMA, Hemp Rope/BU) is an indie author, though. She's with Hermit Books, and she's mentioned her editor on Twitter, and I think the extra steps she takes in the process of publishing her novels show in how polished her stories are compared to the average Thai BL novel.

Favourite character: for the longest time it was Bee but since he got a bit wet kitten near the end, it might be Tul now

Funniest character: i don't remember laughing much with this show but Tul stirring shit was appreciated..Win too

Best-looking character: ohh this show made me get Boun's appeal phew..also though i wouldn't consider Waan traditionally handsome, he brought so much charisma to the table i couldn't look away

3 favourite ships: WaanTul, WinTeam, BeePrince

Least favourite character: Prince's manager maybe? BeePrince's arc was kind of meh so the drama that came with those scenes just annoyed me more than anything

Least favourite ship: out of the four other couples, not counting parents, ig PhruekManow

Reason why I watch it: at some point the dash motivated me cause i had missed out on 4 episodes..the editing is just not it, yknow, the episodes were long and i was dreading the pointless parts.. i wanted to see WinTeam happy but for most of the show i was there for the other couples, at one point it was BeePrince, then WaanTul and i had fun with the PhruekManow crumbs; the chemistry between WinTeam (not sexual only, overall) is also a factor

Why I started watching it: there was sm hype from the fandom and so many gifs from the first two episodes lol; i hadn't/still haven't seen UWMA and thought it'd be fun to see how this one plays out for smne with nearly no context

Funniest character: again, i don't remember laughing much (i was so stressed out) but That was so cute and i found his behaviour funny..Tan was also ridiculous

3 favourite ships: TanBun, ThatSorn, Inspector M and me Dr. Oat (i'm waiting impatiently)

Least favourite character: gee, pick any of the villains and you'd prolly be correct

Least favourite ship: Tan and the kitchen..just leave it to the hottie doctor babes

Reason why I watch it: the mystery and TanBun's chemistry (and their effortless slip into a relationship lol the murder stuff just delayed the inevitable it seems)

Why I started watching it: everyone knew this show and the mystery genre is right up my alley..also MaxTul, i think i had seen twm at that point and wanted more of them

Favorite Thai BL:

The impossible question. Do I go with the one I've watched the most? Or the one I genuinely think is the best BL? Or the one I'd recommend to the most people!? What does favorite even mean?

Um.

Anyway.

I'd go with Tossara just because of how many times I've watched it and still love it beyond all words, honestly. So many other BLs tend to lose my with the ending or with the middle drama and the tiny perfect package of Tossara makes it a winner in my book.

As for my favorite that is also actually genuinely good... A Tale of a Thousand Stars. This show has a very special place in my heart, started on my birthday and is just all around one my favorite BLs and my favorite Our Skyy 2 episodes. I love the characters, I love the setting, I love the tone and them as a couple... just A+ all around.

Favorite Pairing:

Kan and Thua. Hands down. Expect to see these two mentioned again. Like, I love their story and their characters and just everything about them is so important to me. They are my most beloved and I don't think anyone soon will be unseating them.

Most underrated actor:

No idea? None? Who is even under or overrated? I don't know! Let's go with a pair of actors that I adore beyond measure and never got their true leading roles... Bank and Bonus. My beloveds. They played two of my top pairings for chaos and I love them so, so much. They made me love PokTong and the made me love MayonTengnueng. I have a special little spot for these two and seeing Bonus in Low Frequency always makes me happy.

Favorite Character:

My undying love for Ton is undying no matter the time. I love this boy and his deepseated but unfelt homophobia, I love how much he had to fight himself for every step of progress but how much progress he made as well. I love how much he loved and how much he hurt and how much he felt without ever really being able to label it or understand it without the support of everyone around him.

Is he perfect? Hell no. Do I love him? Yes.

... Look, my favorite characters tend to be side characters, okay?! I had to reach deep for this boy or it was just start listing boys from Vietnamese BL that didn't have side couples.

Favorite Side Character:

Kan. Forever. Frankly, he's my favorite character ever but he is technically a support character so he goes here. But this boy? This yearning, desperate, hurt and scared boy? He is everything to me. He grew so much and learned so much and found so much and I will never, ever leave him behind.

Favorite Scene in a BL:

Na and his sunglasses. Does this count? I don't know, if this doesn't count than nothing does.

Favorite Line in a BL:

I'm really sorry but I don't think I have one and if I do I don't remember it. Quotes are not my strong point and I tend to think in scenes/characters rather than lines from the show. And even the ones I do love don't tend to stick with me for long.

Most Anticipated BL (and why):

Dangerous Romance. Dangerous Romance. I am going to become the absolute wildest version of myself when that comes. BL Tropes and Class Commentary with tropes and social issues? My beloved! Yes, Only Friends has a lot to say but almost none of it will be in tropes so, you know, not my favorite. Very excited but this one? Everything to me.

Healthiest Relationship in BL:

Everyone in SCOY. Just... everyone. But especially my most precious SkyJao. I love them so much.

Special Mention to BeePrince, honestly, for being one of the best couples and healthiest, most open to each other relationships without actually being out because of social expectations and the way they just believed in their love.

Most Toxic Relationship in BL:

First place: PrapaiSky. No one can beat them out yet. He broke into his apartment and read his diary to him while he sobbed and begged him not to and had broken up with him. Nope. Nope, nope, nope. Nope. Just miles of nope.

Second Place: MorkPi. For the manipulation, emotional abuse and the way the show portrayed every selfish and unkind thing Mork did as his Only Choice. I hope Pi got out of that relationship.

Guilty Pleasure Series:

History 1: Obsessed. I love this little thing and it's not objectively that good and it's got so many issues and I don't even care because I love it so much. Absolutely imperfect and absolutely fucked up and full of not so good tropes but I still adore it.

Most Underrated Series:

I don't know? I don't know what other people think! I will put Tonhon Chonlatee here because, obviously, I love this little show. But what else?

Pretty much all Vietnamese BL falls under this umbrella but I give a special spot to You Are Mah Boy which is adorable and fluffy and pretty and criminally underrated by people. If you haven't watched it, it's all on youtube and you are sleeping on something wonderful. Not super deep but just so fun.

+BONUS Favorite Setting/Location:

This is rough. Like... what even do I say? I dunno?

I think my real answer has to be forests. I love characters and shots in forests just in general, they make me feel happy and they're different than the typical beach things we get. Forests are common here and I love seeing different forests and the different ways people around the world move in the forest. It's just great. But rare.

My other favorite is, oddly and against all appearances, bathrooms. Bathrooms and elevators. Scenes where the character have the illusion of privacy without it being totally private and with the chance of being interrupted but also we're just observing them? Love it. Thes are my favorite moments, the illusion of privacy knowing it can be broken at any second but needing that privacy enough to keep going even without that.

I am emotionally attached. I will never get over it. Never. I refuse to believe that this series was anything but perfection. Everything, was perfect. The healthiest, most realistic, couples that could ever have been formed. WinTeam, PharmDean, ManaowPhruek, BeePrince, WaanTul. Absolutely divine. I swear to god, I have not seen such a beautiful thing in ages. It was so light hearted and easy to watch, yet such a deep meaning and beautiful connection was formed.

CONSENT. ALL THE COUPLES SHOW CONSENT. THIS IS PROBABLY THE FIRST SERIES WHERE CONSENT HAS BEEN ASKED FIR EXPLICITLY FROM BOTH SIDES IN THE RELATIONSHIP.

I swear it is so beautiful, so emotional, so heartfelt. I recommend all people of the world to watch "Between Us".

I hate people who call Win a red flag, are we watching the same show? They always say how he almost hit Team, but he was also shocked and he didn't do it at the end, he was in a situation that he never experienced before, he took a second and the next things he was doing was hugging Team.

Or you accusing him of leaving Team alone, HE WENT TO DRINK AND FIGURE IT OUT HIS FEELINGS, he wasn't even go for a day, Win also has his traumas and insecurities.

I really love how Between Us managed to use 'consent is sexy', 'actors deserve personal lives', 'homophobia is shitty', 'don't catfish people' (or, don't lie to protect people when the truth coming out will hurt more) and 'let yourself be yourself to be loved' be their central themes for all their couples and somehow made it amazing.
