do u have any random facts or things about Depth of heaven and ur characters (sfw or nsfw 🤭) even if what you want never comes to light, I really enjoy reading the concepts and asks about ur OCs
Hehehe I haven't thought about the characters and their story in a long time, until recently...but I never put a huge amount of thought into them before either! I kinda just knew I...wished I could make something cool that had everything I wanted in that kind of game lmao. Even if it doesn't happen, I felt like I wanted there to be twists and secrets...if it never happens then nobody but me will ever know about them, huh! But, if it does happen then I'll spoil stuff for later! What to do...ah I'll share about it! But I'm giving it a spoiler warning for something that doesn't exist anyway lmao Also I'm not a writer or a scientist this is all wacky world rules ok xd also there might be inconsistencies idk I never wrote anything down I'll tell u their heights! June: 5'4 Puzzle: 6'3 Koa: 5'6 Adam: 6'1 Keizo: 6'7 Lloyd: 5'11 Static: 6' Cyril: 5'9 Holly: 5'7
In high school June and Puzzle were da weeaboos who listened to vocaloid on their phones at lunch. Puzzle wore cat ears, big headphones, and tutus to school. I think....I decided that because of her old bad design lmao. I thought I had a drawing of her in cat ears but I can't find it 😔 June prolly just wore hoodies and graphic t-shirts. They were each others prom dates! June wore a tux! Okay spoilery stuff ahead!
I have a general idea what I want the story to be, but right now I just see it as disjointed scenes in my head. I posted some June and Puzzle wearing dresses where I wanted a scene to happen in a casino on the ship. Cruise ship casinos are kinda lame though lol, but it'll be as big and cool as I want >:•3 and it's an excuse to have everyone in cool formal wear cuz that's always fun! The cult leader calls for a big party on the ship and everyone has to attend! It's also where he culls the herd...because not everyone is worthy of going to heaven...apparently Koa likes playing video games! He's on the top of the leaderboard for one MMO, and during one event the top prize was blueprints for an in-game item: roller skates! It would make for cool merch to put on your wall or something. There was a rumor among the playerbase that the blueprints could make skates that function as they do in the game. Koa won the prints then used them to custom build his own skates (they look kinda generic now but I haven't put a lot of thought into their design lmao). The combination of materials used and construction give them a magical quality that allows him to skate faster than any human could! He's always pushing his limits, and sometimes it gets him in twubble xd Keizo has an issue with bad dreams...at night he replays all the times in his life where people were rude to him or each other, how he needs to keep peace between them, he just really hates assholes! He has nightmares about them treating him badly and there's nothing he can do, because at his height and with his strength he'd come off as the bad guy no matter what! They push and push 'til he's about to snap...then he wakes up! The rage super heats his blood and his skin glows red and steam pours out his ears! His hair is all wacky cuz it holds it's shape on the pillow from all the heat lmao June and the rest of them find out about it when they see steam coming out from under his door at night. Don't wake him up though! If he's still glowing hot he'll sleep walk while in a berserk state. First, it makes him really rude himself lmao. He'll say all the nasty things he won't when he's awake! Second, if he sees someone doin' shit he don't like, they're gettin' these 🤜🤛 In his happy ending you'd see him with his hair flat for the first time wouldn't that be nice :•3 Adam is always doing experiments on himself, kinda just for shits, kinda because he wants to discover something amazing....!.....?!?!??! When he was younger, his sister, who he loved v much, died. He wanted to become a doctor, not because he wanted to find a cure for the thing that killed his sister...because she died in an accident! He wanted to find a way to make people invincible! He's always injecting himself with stuff hoping it'll make him stronger. He likes Keizo as a friend, but to Adam Keizo is a perfect specimen of an indestructable human. Adam's been fascinated with him for a while, but Keizo also just makes for a good subject for testing against! Also, they met when Adam was studying abroad and Keizo came up on a motorbike and attacked the wheels on Adam's scooter. Cute! :•) Keizo used to be a bad boy :•( Other experiments Adam's done: Eyesight like a HAWK Cat ears but for real Jelly bones(?) Longer ween 😳 Lloyd is a stinky tech wiz who likes playing around with AI's and robotics! He has myassive myega brains and he monitors many of the functions of the ship by himself in his server room. When the captain is captured and thrown off the ship, Lloyd uses his know-how and special accesses to make sure the cult doesn't make a mess of everything. He knows about and can see everything that happens on the ship...for fun he likes video games toooo! And plays with Koa! He likes buildin' lil gadgets n tings for fun too! They can come in real handy! nsfw! Stuff past here!!!!!!!!! June, Koa, and Lloyd are all inexperienced!
As a lover, Keizo tries to be gentle...but once he gets into it he can be a bit rough! If you're into it, just enjoy! Or speak up and he'll slow down! Hmmm I was inspired by a scene from the film Crying Freeman (which I haven't actually watched 8•|) of some ppl doin' it in a closet(?)...it's all dark and cramped and humid and their skin is so shiny and glistening it's probably the thing that awoken me to drawing people super sweaty. I just can't help myself 😳 def wanna give Keizo a scene like that. This doodle was inspired by it actually lmao
Adam is patient and gentle! Lots of kisses and verbal reassurance and checking in w/ u. He's aware of his age and he doesn't wanna come off badly so he'll let you do all the pursuing. And June will pursue him hard if she has to! He's also gonna make you beg and ask, just so he's sure sure :•) He loves to sit her up on the examining table n do things wit his mouf n fingers 😳 I'd probably make it an option to call him daddy in certain scenarios...up to u if u choose it find out what happens for urself idk 😳😳😳 or don't
Koa likes to tease you, maybe bully you a lil, but when it comes to intimacy he's a wimp! I just like the idea of making the bully bend to your will, but he likes it. It just feels good to wipe that cocky smile off his face! Step on him! Make him whimper! I know June's a virg too, but Koa is just so easy to tease it makes it feel like second nature. BUT the more time they spend together, the more confident Koa becomes. So! Enjoy havin' him under your thumb while you can cuz it might not last forever! Lloyd tries to stay composed when June starts showing an interest. He's usually alone in his server room, but secretly appreciates her company when she comes by. At first he'll act like he's too busy. He's not used to being around women! As his interest in June grows it becomes harder to hide his feelings! So June notices...and teases him! Cuz it's just so easyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyYYYYYYY 😩 Seeing his serious expression crack when you put ur hands in his pants is lots of fun :•3 And he shows you a voice he's never shown anyone else before 🤤 He does his research and with your help he'll learn exactly how to worship u 😌 IF it ever happens there has to b a new game plus where u unlock threesome scenes with Koa/Lloyd and Adam/Keizo :x That's all 4 now! Sorry I'm fuckin' gross and don't know how to type :•|

Female
Female
2. What is their sexuality?

3. What is the meaning behind their name? Do they have any nicknames?
Gesiye Ikande, goes by Gilly a lot. Gesiye means genuine in Ijaw (ethnic group in Nigeria)

5. What’s their relationship with their parents like? What about other relatives?
She loves them but being the oldest sister she also kinda fell into that third parent role. She has a pretty big family as her parents also have multiple siblings, they spend holidays all together
She got emancipated at the age of 15 due to her parents not being able to care for her and she refused to enter any kind of foster system. She hasn’t talked to them since, assumes they’re dead
6. What would they give their life for?
Her family for sure
Honestly, nothing. No one comes even near being worth dying for. Neither is her business. If it ever came to it, she’d rather rot in prison than die for it
7. Are they in a romantic relationship? With who? How did they meet?
Mallory, met her at work. She wanted to wait to become more than just an investigator intern before starting anything but she’s smart and now she’s a fully fledged investigator
No, she has a strict no dating or banging your employees policy and since all the people she has respect for so far are her employees, there’s no one available. Also, she thinks pretty highly of herself so it’s gonna take work for someone be on the level she sees appropriate. (i myself am kinda curious where tf she and kenjiro are gonna end up)
8. What do they believe will happen to them after they die? Does this belief scare them?
She’s not religious, but does believe in some sort of good/bad place, she doesn’t really let it control her life and she tries to be good for the sake of being good (also, being mean is not nice)
No. And since she doesn’t fear life after death she feels free to do whatever the hell she likes
9. What is their favorite color? Favorite animal?
Purple. Any type of antelope, she thinks they’re neat
Black, surprise, but also really likes neon lights (you can guess what type of lights there are in her club). She likes snakes, especially black mambas

She’s very resourceful, quick thinking and good writer (of reports at least)
She knows how to read and push people, very conniving, and a great actor
11. If they could make a mark on history, what would they like it to be?
Idk, she’s just happy to be here
Woman has a drug empire right under law enforcement’s noses
12. How old are they? When is their birthday?
24-29 depending if time is pre-mallory vs relationship
35 (and both for them i really hate coming up with specific dates)
13. What do they do for fun?
Read, swim, enjoy coffee, cuddle with Mallory, watch animal videos
Gamble (she’s cheating), drink, have long ass baths, patrolling her club is work but she enjoys that part of her work a lot
14. What is their favorite food? How often do they get to eat it?
Something very spicy, veggies, she’s not a huge meat-eater
Due to her past drug abuse, most foods make her nauseous, so her fave is something light like fish
15. What was something their parents taught them?
Be kind and respectful, know your worth and do the dishes
Everyone is own their own
16. Are they religious?
No, spiritual, kinda
No

19. What is their occupation?
Private investigator
Night club owner (that’s the side hustle to her drug business)
20. Do they have any titles? How did they earn them?
P.I, lots of school and getting a good internship
Word on the street is that she runs the biggest drug ring this side of rim, not officially though. Hard work and lots of blackmailing
Environment:
61. Which season is their favorite season?
Spring, lots of green, but not yet unbearably hot
Whenever her money comes in
62. Have they ever been betrayed? How did it affect their ability to trust others?
No, doubt she ever will, the bounty hunter (at least the citadel ones) are good people
Since birth honestly, whatever trust she had for her parents wilted away and now she won’t trust anyone unless they’ve proven themselves time and time again
63. What is always guaranteed to make them smile?
Animals, friends, the outdoors, she’s simple, just living the good life
Money, getting what she wants
64. Do they get cold easily? Do they get overheated easily?
She get cold more easily than too hot
Thanks to her metal leg all drastic changes in temperature are felt almost immediately
65. What’s their immune system like? Do they get sick often? How do they react to getting sick?
She’s got a pretty strong immune system. Doesn’t get sick that much
It’s pretty weak. She often gets flu when it’s the season
66. Where do they live? Do they like it there?
She lives in the citadel, has nice apartment there, she likes it lot
She has carved herself a place on the outer rim, it wasn’t exactly her dream but at this point there’s no place she’d rather be, has multiple apartments scattered around but her main one is on the top floor of her nightclub
67. Is their bedroom messy? What about their bathroom? Kitchen? Living room?
It’s somewhat messy, coffee cups and plates here and there, papers and journals scattered about, the whole house is like that
It’s super neat, she looks after herself. Her suite doesn’t even have a kitchen because she gets her food from the club kitchen
68. How did their environment growing up affect their personality?
Her parents influenced her a lot, she turned out good
Coming from two addicts, becoming one herself and generally being distrustful...
69. How did the people in their environment growing up affect their personality?
Wait i thought the previous one was the same question abbgöreghaeh
70. How do they feel about animals? Do they have any pets?
Love them! No time for one tho, if she had it’s be a cat
On that note.. I think she has a pet snake in her suite, its got a huge terrarium for it
71. How are they with children? Do they have any? Do they want any?
Love them, she’s good with them, she’s definitely the fun big cousin for her small relatives. Doesn’t have any but might want one? She feels she’s too young still
She doesn’t hate them but would rather no kids see her, ever. Doesn’t have any, doesn’t want any
72. Would they rather have stability or comfort?
i mean.... with stability comes comfort. But she’d choose comfort
Stability, life is already one big uncomfort for her to begin with
73. Do they prefer the indoors or outdoors?
Outdoors
Indoors
74. What weather is their favorite? Do they like storms?
Sunny for sure, storms are nice when you’re inside and in a secure place
Loves rain and storms, they also make ppl gather inside more
75. If given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen?
She’d doodle, they’re not great but i’m Mallory would love whatever she’d draw
If something, she’d draw a middle finger for investigators to find
76. How organized are they?
She keeps her work very neat and packed, everything else, not so much
Very much so, everything is neat and organized and hidden away, that’s key to getting away with doing what she does
77. What is their most prized possession?
Her badge, or a stuffed animal from her home
A single memory card contains mountains of excel sheets, it’s either always on the move and hidden or locked away, never in the same place for longer than a week

Mallory, she’s sappy like that
Juicebox comes the closest
79. What is their economic situation?
She’s comfortable, not super rich but not going from paycheck to paycheck either
Oh she’s loaded

All the best stuff happens at night in her opinion

Tag Game - Get to Know Me
Answer the questions below and tag 11 people you want to know better!
i was tagged by @moody-typos and it looked like fun so i thought why not.
. • . • . • . • .
1. What do you prefer to be called name wise?
silv, silvy, or silvana. i don’t particularly mind as these are all technically the same. so all of them i guess are my preferred name.
2. When is you birthday?
june 26th!
i like to remark that’s the day the US legalized gay marriage in all 50 states back in 2015 so i was born to be gay. 🏳🌈🌈
3. Where do you live? (You don’t have to give city, you can give the state if you’re USA or country if you’re overseas)
US if the previous statement wasn’t obvious.
another hint: it’s hot and it rains too much here. good luck finding me~
4. Three things you are doing right now?
writing ( non-fanfic work ), listening to music ( FEEL NOTHING atm ), & working on headcanon requests from my inbox.
5. Four Fandoms that have your peak interest right now?
my hero academia, ikemen sengoku, mr. love queen’s choice, & castlevania. these are currently my most consistent hypes that won’t let me go.
6. How has this pandemic been treating you?
at first i thought it would be great but i’ve been stuck inside ( i literally have not been passed my mailbox or even near it ) for 3 months or so now. i’m ready for it to be over because i would like to enjoy my summer while i still have the opportunity.
overall i’m stressing myself out and unmotivated to do a lot of things.
7. A song you can’t stop listening to right now?
Contagious by NIGHT RIOTS, been obsessed with it since February of 2019.
but i also recommend:
Fashion Forward (Acoustic) by The Home Team
I Miss Having Sex But At Least I Don’t Wanna Die by Waterparks
8. Recommend a movie.
Birdbox. Sandra Bullock is in it ( reason enough for me ) it’s a great sort of horror/thriller movie that really builds suspense by your imagination. if you’re easily scared i do not recommend it because your mind will definitely work against you.
A milder movie ( that isn’t horror ) would be Mad Money. it is a hilarious movie about 3 women from entirely different backgrounds that work at and rob a high security bank ( and all for different reasons ). the characters are quirky and well put together.
both are on the US netflix but i’m not sure about anywhere else.
9. How old are you?
not old enough to drink yet. yet.
10. School, University, Occupation, Other?
i’m in university. i’m studying to become an accountant ( but so far my business classes have only taught me how to destroy the economy in my favor while jumping through legal loopholes oof ).
11. Do you prefer heat or cold?
definitely cold. i hate both if we’re talking weather but i can cope with cold. i tend to get even more tired in the cold and it helps me sleep ( hibernate technically ).
12. Name one fact about you that others may find unusual.
well... if i’m being honest, i have very horrible eyesight ( i’m almost completely blind in one eye ) and people seem more than a little worried when i tell them i can incapacitate a humanoid target from a 100 yards ( ~92 meters, at least ) and i have the target poster to prove it.
i won’t get into it but if you want to know how that poor poster is doing just let me know.
13. Are you shy?
relatively. if i know you, i’m the loudest damn person you know, or if it’s a matter of discussion, i tend to have a very powerful persona ( or so i’m told ).
generally i will not talk to people and keep to myself though. people make me nervous and i struggle to cope with anxiety so i don’t go out of my way to talk to people ( so i just end up sneaking glances if you pique my interest but i can’t say anything to you ).
14. Do you have preferred pronouns?
i prefer they/them, however, i still align with female attributes so she/her is legit too. whichever, i’m not picky about it.
15. Biggest pet peeve?
slow walkers. this might not be #1 but it’s definitely up there. i walk incredibly fast ( especially for a person with short legs ) and have long strides. if you’re in front of me and blocking my way, you can bet i’m going to mow you over. i will not slow down.
16. What is your fave ‘dere’ type?
the first one to come to mind was yandere and it’s probably true. it’s the mindset of the yandere that draws me in. if they’re written and played out well they become people who we’re teetering on the edge of becoming if we aren’t careful. i love that terrifying feeling of “i could be that if i just step wrong”.
17. Rate your life 1-10, 1 being really crappy and 10 being best it could ever be.
i really don’t want to do that, because i’m in an okay place and sometimes i’m in bad or good, but really it depends on the moments, people, and little messages that make it better. just depends on the time of day.
18. What is your main blog?
@moonsirens
haven’t honestly decided what i’ll do with it so it will probably just be a repost and dump?
19. List your side blogs and what they are used for.
one of them is private that i can’t tag & it’s used for roleplay stuff ( aesthetics, character files, images, etc ).
@spellbound-doodles which is my art blog i am still to chicken to post to. i should but sharing personal works, stories, & art is really hard for me ( a best friend had to make an instagram for my art for me to get me to start posting! )
20. Is there anything you think people need to know about you before becoming friends with you?
expect me to bother you about my dog and the horrible jokes my brother made that i absolutely have to share because they made me laugh so hard i cried.
also, footnote, i’m satan soooo-
but that’s a story for another time.
. • . • . • . • .
tagging : most people i’m vaguely familiar with have been tagged, so i guess whoever wants to snatch it up and give it a shot? i’ll tag you then-

When you were a kid...
Were you happy or sad when you found out your babysitter was coming? I didn’t have a babysitter. My grandparents took care of me and my siblings and cousins when we were growing up; and if they were both busy I was usually the one expected to care for everyone. Which was okay with me, since I was the most ~motherly~ one in our little group anyway.
Did you have a boyfriend in kindergarten? I studied in an all-girls school from kinder to high school. Outside of school, also no boyfriends. The boys at my neighborhood were super rowdy and hated girls, so I didn’t like hanging out with them.
Did you ever play hopscotch at school? For sure. I was a little mischievous - I would steal a bunch of chalk from the classroom so I can doodle a hopscotch court on school grounds for me and my friends to play on. I definitely wasn’t the most goody-two-shoes kid in the beginning, lol.
Did you refuse to eat your vegetables? Yeah, hated them. We have this local brand of instant noodles that have pieces of carrot in it, and I remember grouping all the tiny carrot bits at the edge of my plate. I didn’t learn to feed myself until I was around 8 or 9 though, so prior to that my elders would just include vegetables in all my meals and I’d have no choice.
What did you usually dress up as on Halloween? Some basic costume like a witch or pirate. My mom wasn’t super into Halloween and would just get us costume packs from the toy store. I wanna be the complete opposite for my kids.
What was your favorite television show? As a much younger kid I was into Hi-5. When I got a bit older I liked Pokemon, SpongeBob, The Fairly OddParents, My Life as a Teenage Robot, etc. Then when I got slightly older I started watching the real-life shows too, so like That’s So Raven, Suite Life, Drake and Josh, Zoey 101, Hannah Montana. Did you have D.E.A.R. time in school? (Drop Everything and Read) Yes, a few times each year. When I was still a bookworm it had been one of my favorite segments in school because I got to see other kids reading, which was my favorite hobby then. But by the time I was in high school and stopped reading, I remember always struggling to find a book to bring because I didn’t read anything anymore D: If I remember correctly, I think Athenna lent me most of the books I brought for DEAR time since at the time she was into John Green and YA in general. Did you ever read the 'Magic Treehouse' series? No. I googled it to see the cover, and I know as a kid it wouldn’t have interested me enough to pull it out of its shelf. How about the 'Bailey School Kids' series? Nope. Kids my age were into the Geronimo Stilton and Mr Men/Little Miss series. Do you remember the first movie you ever saw in theaters? Yes, it was a Stuart Little movie when I was maybe 3 or 4. I’m guessing it’s Stuart Little 2, because Google says it came out in 2002 and I was 4 years old then, so it checks out. Who was your best friend in elementary school? Angela was my best friend in some grades, but you know how kids are...once they vibe with someone else, they’ll hang out with them 24/7. Angela was a way more sociable kid so she got close with everyone, while I remained terrible at making friends. If she wasn’t my best friend at the time, I had no one. Did they continue to be your best friend in middle school? We don’t have middle school but I’ll guess that this is like Grade 6 and 7 for us? Anyway, no. ~Middle school~ was worse for me because this was when cliques started to form and material trends became the basis for being visible, e.g. owning a Blackberry, wearing Nike Roshes, getting side bangs lol, etc. I had none of those, so I was left behind both in terms of visibility and having friends. I only had a best friend again by the time I entered Grade 7, in which time I met Gabie and the ball started rolling from there. Did you ever watch 'The Land Before Time' movies? No, I didn’t. Did you ever watch the show 'Arthur'? I don’t think it aired here, so no. I did read Arthur books though; they were one of my favorites. Did the tooth fairy give you a lot of money? I honestly thought the tooth fairy was real. I never told my parents whenever a tooth would come out because I thought it was none of their business. That said, they just genuinely never knew to put money under my pillow because my dumbass never told them hahaha. I’ll never forget how crestfallen I was when I woke up to no money though. How often did you visit your nearest grandparents? I lived with them until I was 10. I only visited my other set of grandparents whenever my dad would come home from abroad, so I didn’t and haven’t ended up being close to them. Did you ever play with 'Little People' toys? Never heard of them but when I looked it up the toys looked familiar, so we probably did. How about Polly Pockets? Yes. Did you collect anything when you were a kid? Pokemon cards and pogs, heh. I also had my fair share of notebooks. Did you get an allowance? No, my parents didn’t teach me how money worked early on. I was a packed lunch kid until high school, and when I did ask for money I – and I’m not kidding – would only get a ₱20 bill, which was only enough to get me a tiny snack. What was your favorite sport to play? What is it now? Track, but then it shifted to table tennis when I joined the table tennis club initially out of peer pressure. What foods did you not like then that you do like now? Chicken curry, definitely. Were you into American Girl dolls? No. What was your first pet and what did you name it? It was a goldfish but I don’t remember whether I named it Goldie or Fishy, lol. Did you ever read the 'Junie B. Jones' books? No. What did you want to be when you were a kid? All the things I wante to be were astronaut, firefighter, veterinarian, and writer. What was your first word? Your first sentence? (If you remember) My parents didn’t keep track of either...I definitely would with my own kids. Have you moved into a new house since you were a kid? Yes, several times. When I was an infant we briefly lived with my dad’s parents in Manila. My mom couldn’t take the poverty and pollution there so we moved to a city in Rizal, where my mom’s parents + some extended family live in a duplex. At one point we switched houses in that duplex, and the unit that we switched to was where I lived for most of my childhood until we moved to our present house by the time I was 10. Were you friends with your neighbors? As a child, yeah. I was mostly friends with the girls though because like I said, the boys were super rowdy and sexist in that they never let us play basketball with them and stuff. Did you enjoy exploring your backyard? We didn’t have a backyard. Did you bake cookies with your grandparents? Sometimes! I would mix the dough and turn them into balls. :) What was your biggest fear when you were a kid? Flying cockroaches, because we had a lot of them in our old duplex unit. I also had an irrational fear of catching TV ads at night because I found them too loud and too vibrant. Who did you look up to most? My dad because I barely saw him as a kid. When he was lower down the ladder at his job he’d be gone six months and only stay with us for one. It wasn’t until I got to high school and he had a much higher position that he was away for only four months and home for one and a half. Did you ever play the 'Reader Rabbit' computer games? I don’t think I’ve heard of that. Did you have a swing set in your backyard? No but we had a relative who had a playground at their place, and we’d go over there often. I spent a good amount of my childhood going as high as I can on their swings. How about a sandbox? Same relative had a sandbox too! It’s my favorite part of a playground and even during playtime in school I would usually be found alone in the sandbox. How old were you when you learned how to ride a bike? I’m 22 and still don’t know how... Did you ever spy on your neighbors through the window? Sometimes. Our houses were very close to each other and their open window is right across the part of our house that also has an open window, so sometimes we’ll fool around and peek. Were you a teacher's pet in kindergarten? No, but I gave my teachers a reason to remember me because I was the kid that peed their underwear everyday and had to go home in shorts. I’ve always been shy and even as a kid I was unable to ask permission to go to the washroom. Did you ever build a treehouse or a fort in your yard? No, ours was too small to build anything like that. Did you ever find anything interesting in your yard? No, just different types of bugs and caterpillars. Did you ever have 'themed birthdays'? Kinda? My 7th birthday party was mostly a plain, theme-less birthday party, but so much of the decorations and giveaways were Bratz-themed because I was into Bratz at the time. Did your parents let you drink soda? They would have let me but I personally never liked it. Did you ever watch 'The Powerpuff Girls' or 'Dexter's Laboratory'? I watched Powerpuff Girls but not Dexter’s Laboratory. Did you sleep with a blanket or stuffed animal? For the most part I preferred cuddling with a pillow. Did you ever have a night light? For some points in my childhood, yeah. Ultimately, I preferred lights out though. Did you watch 'Winnie the Pooh'? Nope, just read Winnie the Pooh books. Did you ever have an imaginary friend? What was their name? I named them Katrina but I wasn’t imaginative/creative enough, so when seven minutes passed after I created her and she still wasn’t talking back to me, I gave it up haha. What kinds of games did you play with your friends during Recess? Dodgeball was a favorite. We had a big field just right outside our classroom so we’d all go out, pick our teams, and play for the whole 30 minutes. We’d do it for lunch, too. Fortunately our teachers never barred us from playing, because I guess they knew it counts as exercise for us too. Did you dream of being a princess or did you not really care about that? Not really. I wanted to be an astronaut more haha. The only princess-y things I did were to wear my blanket around my neck like a cape, and to wear a tiara on my 7th birthday party. Did you have a special name for your pacifier? What was it? No. Did you watch 'Blues Clues'? Yesssssss. I grew up with Steve and Joe. It was such a fun show to watch. What kind of car did your parents have? I don’t remember the make anymore but we had a black sedan until I was around five. It was mostly broken-down and had no aircon, but it was my dad’s first car so it was his absolute baby and I never had the heart to complain about the car’s flaws to him. He eventually sold it and we had a blue Mitsubishi Lancer after. Did you ever flush anything down the toilet by mistake? I don’t remember ever doing that, thankfully lol. Were you afraid to sleep by yourself? No, I think I was excited to start doing it. Growing up in a cramped duplex, I shared one bedroom with my entire family until I was around 9; so when we moved to our own home, I was the first one to call dibs on a bedroom. What was your favorite subject in elementary school? Language, which is a class where we were just taught basic English grammar. I loved reading as a kid and got fluent in English early on, so I was always a top student in that subject. How often did you go to the park? We don’t have parks. What was your favorite kind of cake as a kid? Chocolate cake from Red Ribbon. Did you ever want to grow up? I never actively ‘wanted’ it because I was already kinda forced to grow up early, what with all the issues happening at home and me having to shield my siblings and cousins from whatever screaming match was happening inside.

Update 6/30/19 Returning to Character Designs and Concept Art Soon
Set to defend in late July and mid August is my final deadline for my thesis and than to get it published. However I hope in the next few months I’ll have more time and energy to return to the visual aspects of REOD and all that it will entail. At the same time however, my life will still be a little chaotic in other aspects (moving out, job searching, wedding planning, job landing and moving again potentially). It certainly means the remainder of this year will be busy with professional and personal things, but I will do whatever I can in my free time to focus on this project.
As of now this is what everyone can expect from this blog and Rajin Edge of Darkness as a whole:
1) General Detailed Outline for Book I almost finished (general lighting, events per panel per page, and dialogue).
** I will figure out specifics like camera angles, exact poses, and layout of panels as I work on the actual illustration part of the project since I realized with the writting keeping it open for creative liberties later on is best
2) Rough Outlines for II-VIII Finished
3) Rajin Edge of Darkness will be planned out as a webcomic initially before moving on with smaller physcial books to complete larger editions
4) A new teaser for Book I: Skyfyre is being planned out and hoping for release perhaps in the next year at the latest (animatic releasing soon on here)
5) The official website for REOD is in the planning stages, but I hope I can get some more interesting updates for that in the next several months including a basic site foundation out to the public by next summer
6) Start of Page Illustration is still up in the air, but I hope it will start within the year. Essentially as soon as I feel comfortable enough with the concepts of my characters and the world itself to draw and color everything at least okay (I realize the art will be imporoving greatly across the series and I can’t be 100% perfect when I start, but I don’t want to be really bad either......) 7) I plan to return to my online art classes and general tutorials I have been hoarding in the next few weeks. This process of self practice and improvement will take the next several months surely, but I want to cover as many aspects from the basics onward as possible. Like giving myself a general bootcamp to the best of my abilities to be semi preparred for beginning this 15+ year long project. Besides what I already have planned out regarding my post queue up until mid-late August, my future posts will mostly be entailing roughly drawn/colored pieces (actual art guys!!!!). Bear with me, they will look like crap when I start out, but I realize I need to force myself to doodle something at least every day if not every other day to improve. The point of these pieces is to help me utilize the art fundamentals I’m learning fully regarding composition, anatomy, coloring,....etc. as well as getting better at using other mediums. I also set up a randomized list of characters from film, games, and tv to help me get better at people. This list does i include all the characters I have so far from the project, but I plan to do plenty of pieces for everyone until I get the designs to where I’m happy with them.
TL;DR Finishing grad school this summer and slowly getting back to my art. Will be practicing a little of everything. This will involve pieces that include characters, settings, props, creatures,....etc. Expect the next several months to be about my art journey. Of course anything REOD related will be posted here while everything else on Dragon Half Freelance on FB

i kind of felt like i needed to make this post because i have been stressed out of my actual mind as of late and that isn’t helping me with my anxiety so i thought i would share some tips with you guys- friends in hopes that this helps you and also in turn helps me bc i am s t r u g g l i n g right now haha
If you find yourself in panic attack/mental breakdown situations (during studying, sleeping, whenever):
1. TAKE A DEEP BREATH: this is legit some of the most underrated advice but this is so so so so so important. i often find myself holding my breath without thinking and even if you look stupid forcing yourself to breath between shaking and crying just do it. please. you will instantly feel better because bottling things up is legit the most toxic thing you could do to yourself
2. if the resource is there: talk to someone. talk to a trusted adult like a teacher, mentor, counselor, or even your parents. i know how it is: you might not trust them, believe me- i have had a fair share of adults who have let me down from time to time and trust me, once you find someone that is perfect for you to talk to, you will cherish that person for the rest of your life. I will never forget my first middle school counselor, i don’t know her name mainly because i was having a panic attack when i met her but i’ll remember her face and her hospitality forever. and she was a stranger to me at the time: sometimes you need that outside stranger to talk to you know? that way, you get a less biased? (idk weird wording there but you get it) response
3. FOOD AND WATER: i cannot tell you how bad i am at drinking water like it’s hopeless at this point but its SOOO important for you! pleaseee drink water. i think water tastes like nothing and it’s pointless to drink it but that is really crazy thinking so don’t follow me on that please because i am seriously working on it these days and my skin has started to clear up majorly but i also feel so much better in general? like hydration does wonders i’m serious- you might not even notice but it’s doing something nice at least to your body. food food food food food please eat something. i know sometimes when i dont eat a few meals because i am so caught up in work, i forget what it feels like to be hungry and that is absolutely ridiculous, do not skip that many meals. i don’t care if your grade depends on it tomorrow for chem or that you need to finish your slide for that group project: if you cannot remember what you ate last literally drop whatever you are doing and get a freaking granola bar- not even- get a sandwich, some chips, and a water or a salad or some carrots and hummus LITERALLY ANYTHING put it in your mouth and chew it slowly and savor your food and thank the universe that your food is making you more energetic to complete your work because honestly not eating makes you feel so weak and it shuts you down. and you know what? when you shut down, it gives you more room to be stressed and anxious because that happens to me too many times in my life and it is the worst feeling in the world: being anxious, sleep deprived, weak :( its not okay and i need my people to stop suffering so eat your carrots kiddos❤
4. nap! this is also extremely simple but soooo underrated. literally nap for like 10 minutes and you will feel SO GOOD afterwards. i know it takes me at least 30 minutes to fall asleep because that’s just me but as soon as i feel sleepy, i turn on my alarm. shutting your brain off for a few minutes does wonders: it actually recharges and resets your brain for a little bit and as long as you don’t sleep for too long, you will wake up more motivated than ever before!
4.5 going off of the previous point: if you are truly tired, sleep. sleep. sleep. i cannot tell you this enough. there is absolutely no point and no shame in going to bed if you have a headache, your eyes are closing and you cannot focus anymore. plain and simple: it’s just a major waste of time and you will have to end up studying it again anyways. i try to get to bed around 11 which i know is already pushing the late boundaries but if you go to sleep and really, truly, need to finish your work in the morning, wake up a couple hours earlier and finish it quickly- maybe catch a few more z’s. it’s better to get your hours in earlier and wake up feeling better than going to bed at 4:30 (cough thanks nonso) and waking up 3 minutes before school because you shut off your alarm. i’m only telling you guys my stupid mistakes just so you know there are consequences to not following this advice people- this is first hand experience haha
5. TAKE YA MEDS KIDDOS: that’s literally it, you may have forgotten and now are in deep doodoo with yourself whoops set a reminder
if you have trouble sleeping/resting at night or whenever:
1. i have had trouble staying asleep throughout the night for the past few years now. i’m not sure how it started but my brain is just too hot wired these days to stay put: there are some quick things i do when i wake up shaking, panicking, restless, miserable, whatever in the middle of the night:
listen to rain sounds on spotify
listen to my favorite podcasts (i gotta make a post about this, message me if you want podcasts like asap after reading this something)
watch “planet earth” or “round planet” on netflix- round planet is by BBC so there’s that old british guy talking and i think it’s nice :) overall, it’s super therapeutic i highly recommend
make a warm cup of tea or milk: i usually put honey and cinnamon in my milk or honey in my tea and it’s quite nice i think, it makes me sleepy again
sometimes i wrap myself in extra blankets and cuddle with more stuffed animals to help me fall/fall back asleep. i think there is some nostalgic feeling about being tucked in and being all warm and safe that makes me calm down again i’m not sure why
if you’re having trouble focusing while studying (i got through this at least once a day omg):
1. take a breather! drinks a glass of cold water, stare around the room for a bit, walk around the neighborhood or the house or the library or wherever you are for a bit- get that blood flowing again
2. look at something motivational! i have a motivation tag kind of thing on my page called #feelgood so you can check it out if you want haha but there are tons of motivational videos and posts from the studyblr community so :)
3. study something you are interested first! this is by far the most useful study advice i have ever received because it motivates me to subconsciously focus my brain and keep me in a “grind” kind of mood
3.5 related to the previous point, study in small chunks! also switch up on the subject if you get bored.
4. do a hobby! i LOVE reading for fun during study breaks or when i can’t focus especially when i’m super interested in the book because i get sucked into that universe and after i finish a chapter i want to finish more work in order to keep reading- it’s great. i also love doodling intricate designs on my moleskine to keep my busy and i also like writing poems or editing photos. just find something that is calming to you in order to give your brain a break! once you have that little reset, i promise you will feel better going back to work
5. stop studying? sometimes i burnt out in the middle of studying and you just have to realize when you’ve reached your limit for the night/day so just stop and get some sleep, there’s nothing wrong with sleeping or taking a rest just a reminder <3 and sometimes that means you can get back to your work later or not and that’s okay :)
along with my finals series, i’m going to dedicate an entire post for reasons as to why you should stop comparing yourself so look for that in the next couple of days or so :)
and just a reminder that you can do it! no matter your barriers you WILL overcome them with flying colors and you will have an amazing summer very soon✨
love,
Nonso

(/ω\)゚.+(〃ノωノ)゚.+°50 More Interesting Questions
Rules: fill this out and tag at least one person you’d like to know more about! Or just fill it out! Or don’t! Answer only some of them! Make up your own questions! “What kind of requirement is that”, you ask? A reasonable one! Who am I to tell you what to do? Anything goes!
tagged by @theempresskaizer and @incorrectmidc THANK YOUUU <3
1. What kind of food can’t you stand?: FISH, especially Fried Tilapia. I dunno. I loved fish as a kid, but now just the smell of it makes my stomach churn. Oh, and broccoli. GDI the first time I tasted it was traumatic :’D
2. If you could choose one minor inconvenience to never have to deal with again, what would you pick?: losing my pencils -- for a person who draws often losing these babies is kinda ironic, isn’t it?
3. Have you got any useless talents?: Uhm.... I can sleep anywhere. LOL
4. If you could be really really good at one thing, what would it be?: drawing.it’s literally the oldest hobby i have so :/
5. Name a few people you think are extremely good-looking: real people?! okay, dumb question. i kinda view people’s faces as equal, but there are particular people who stand out. i love looking at Eva Green and Angelina Danilova. my girl crushes :v
6. What was your favorite way to pass the time as a kid?: doodle doodle on the wall; wait for my mama’s angry call :’D
7. What is something you’re proud of?: uhm... I dunno. I don’t dwell much on myself on a positive light, so I haven’t really thought of the things I should be proud of. Unless it means something else? IDK lels
8. What’s one character flaw in people that you just can’t tolerate?: being self-righteous, or being too self-important. I tend to act cold towards people like these cuz duuuuuhhhh. I’d rather treat you like fart than say mean things cuz people like these aren’t really worth getting work up over.
9. Do you consider yourself to be more of a leader or a follower?: Back when I was a youthful optimistic fellow, I have, indeed proven myself able to be a leader, but now I just wanna be a follower. Energy-saving mode on unnecessary things :D
10. What kind of student are/were you?: When I was in high school, I was the overrated student. And it sucked because teachers placed high expectations against my will when in fact I am the lazy student who relies on stock knowledge to get through school life :v
11. Butterfly effect question! Has there ever been a seemingly minor decision you’ve made (at the time) that ended up having a profound influence on your life?:Yes.*blushes*
12. Name your most irrational fear/aversion: I used to run away at the speed of light at the sight of anything worm-like. >___<. I once accidentally touched a worm and it felt cold and slimy it was disgusting I literally threw a fit (LOL), but now I can tolerate them. Just... stay away within a one-meter radius D:
13. Are there any fictional characters you find especially relatable?: a looottt.
14. If you drink, what kind of drunk are you? Alternatively, what sort of person are you at parties?: I don’t drink alcoholic beverages to the point where I get wasted. But let me tell you a story: when I was a kid, Mom gave me a quarter kilo of grapes. I finished it in one sitting, but I got drunk so I hit my head on the door knob when I tried to stand up. I wonder what kind of drunk I am now? AT PARTIES? NOOO... I just stay at corners and try to avoid having to party. It’s not the party that’s bad, it’s the socializing. :’D
15. Do you fall in love easily? Or does it usually take a long time for you to trust someone?: I fall in love with 2d men easily. And yes, it takes quite some time for me to trust someone nowadays, cuz I learned my lesson the hard way.
16. Would you rather have one close friend or 100 casual friends?: just one close friend is enough. I get tired of people quite easily.
17. Do you consider yourself to be more of a slob or a neat-freak?: *glances around my work area* Yep. I’m a slob alright. But that’s only when I’m too busy on something. Otherwise, you’ll often see me arranging my stuff here and there.
18. Describe a place (imaginary or real) that you would find incredibly cozy: a view of the sunset in a large window from a high place. and where a contrast of temperature is at its best <3
19. Do you have kids? If not, do you want them someday?: I’m not that fond of kids because the kids in my neighborhood are brutal. They call me pancit canton (instant noodle) because of my hair :’’’’’’’’’D (I’m a 23-year-old bullied by 5-year-old kids)
20. What was your favorite book as a child?: I didn’t like reading, believe me. I learned to read quickly because I wanted to get away from books as fast as possible. LOL
21. Name one thing you just don’t get what all the hype is about: uhm... mobile legends and despacito :x srsly what are those
22. Name one thing that you think is tragically underrated: what is. IDK... ಠ_ರೃ
23. If you had to be glued to a person for a month, real or fictional (who you have never met), who would you choose?: I’d be with Hitsugaya Toushiro! (then will secretly glue us together again before one month ends LOLOLOLOL) Taichou! <3
24. What’s something you’d like the chance to do someday?: I want to travel a lot to old places. Ah... it’s a life-long dream :3
25. Do you typically speak your mind when you have a controversial opinion? Or do generally prefer to not rock the boat?: I’m a peace-loving person, and I’m weak at arguments so I keep my mouth shut and let my brain become noisy until my thoughts settle down instead of speaking up.
26. What’s the dumbest fad you’ve been caught up in?: I live in a cave -- what even is the latest fad today
27. What’s something you thought was cool as a kid/adolescent, but now cringe at yourself for?: I was low-key emo back then but it only manifested in my music preference because I was keeping up a good school image. Now when I look back at that “shiny and brilliant student” facade I wanted to smack my younger self in the head (btw, my music preference never changed).
28. What’s a trait you consider to be very admirable?: Bravery. It can take you far if you have it. I admire brave people.
29. Is there a particular kind of item people always tend to give you as gifts? (For instance, people always get you things with ducks on them because you like ducks, etc.): I don’t receive gifts anymore (too bad, will you give me a gift? XD) but my godmother often gave me dresses and clothes, and blue items cuz she knew blue was my favorite :3
30. Do you speak multiple languages? Which ones?: I speak Filipino, English and not that fluent at Japanese (and currently taking a crash course at Bahasa Indonesia)
31. Would you rather live in the big city or the countryside?: I’d choose countryside in a heartbeat!
32. Has there ever been something you were certain you’d hate, but ended up loving?: none in particular.
33. Do you mind being the center of attention, or do you prefer the spotlight to be on someone else?: I do not like too much attention. I do appreciate it when someone notices me but if I get too much of that, it wears me out.
34. Favorite holiday?: Christmas!
35. Are you a more go-with-the-flow type of person, or do you need to have things planned meticulously?: there are days when I just go with the flow, but when the situation calls for it, I spend a night planning my days, especially trips. Yup.
36. Is there something you loved so much you wish you could forget it and experience it all over again? (A tv show, book, series–anything.): Final Fantasy Advent Children. I’d love to experience that doki-doki when I see Cloud in action <3 and my nightly walks back at the province. The moon-lit road home, the fireflies, the silence, the nature -- I’d love to go back there and spend a good vacation. Plus the residents are really friendly
37. What hobbies do you have?: Drawing, procrastinating, sleeping, procrastinating, reading manga, and did I mention procrastinating?
38. If you could have a superpower, but it was only mildly useful, what ability would you want to have?: what even -- then it’s not called superpower anymore, but rather just “power” LOLOLOL. I wish I could shut down my nose when someone farts XD
39. Something people are always surprised to learn about you: that I’m not actually intimidating and that I am indeed Filipina.
40. Something that took you way too long to figure out: how to answer this. also, still trying to figure out how I’ll dissect my building. -_-
41. Worst injury you’ve had?: I fell down the stairs when I was a kid and it damaged my knees. Now both knees hurt during the cold season.
42. Any morbid fascinations?: I like drawing gore?
43. Describe your sense of humor: dark! as a result of my depression, my jokes tend to be categorized as black comedy LOL. Also perv. :v
44. If you had to be born in another era/place, which would you choose? I wish I was born in Japan, or renaissance England (^◇^;)
45. Something you are irredeemably bad at: time management (/ω\)
46. Something that sucked but you’re glad you went through: College. Why the hell did I have to pick Architecture major of all things? But I learned a few things so okay.
47. Would you rather have a really godawful ugly tattoo in a place that is only slightly inconvenient to conceal with clothing (upper arm, thigh, etc.), or the coolest, most beautiful tattoo ever in the middle of your face? (Neither tattoo can be removed or concealed with makeup, and the ugly tattoo will deeply offend anyone who sees it.): ugly tattoo. I don’t like having stuff on my face
48. Are you more of an optimist or a pessimist?: I’m a pessimist irl. I’m actually a depressing human being hiding behind my drawings online ゚.+(〃ノωノ)゚.+°
49. What would be the most flattering compliment someone could give you?: that I’ve inspired them. Ah truly a ray of light in this dark depressing life of mine ( ̄∇ ̄) .+°
50. Something you feel people often misunderstand about you: my silence. me being silent to them often means I’m mad, or brooding, or being a bitch. LOL NO. that’s just my face ᕕ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ᕗ

Living in the Now – While Preparing for the Norm (Life After Covid)
Many things can cause anxiety. However, one major cause of anxiety is not living “in the now.” Have you ever gotten yourself worked up mentally or emotionally because you are worrying about something in the future? Have you ever made yourself miserable and ruined “today” because you are busy rehearsing a conversation with someone in your mind? We have all done this to some degree or another. I cannot tell you how many times I literally wore myself out by rehearsing a potential conversation with my boss or a friend over and over in my mind. I would think, well, if they say this, then I will say that. And It went on and on. Most of the time I ended up not even having the conversation. Or if I did, it was completely different than I expected. I wasted my time and energy (and my peace) for no reason at all! Now with Covid 19 and what the future will look like can easily steal our peace and enjoyment – when will I go back to work? Will I have a job? How long do we have to wear mask? What does social distancing looking like once we emerge from our homes? When will I be able to find the food I want? Stop me anytime! And if you have lost friends or family – our prayers and thoughts are with you. Many have not been able to say goodbye. People talk about the importance of living in the moment. We might hear about the different ways it will benefit us. It all sounds wonderful, but how exactly can we live in the moment when our mind is constantly racing, worrying about the past or future on a good day and now Covid 19? Buddha said - “The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.” While I appreciate that and I know it is true, let me tell you Buddha never worked from home while home-schooling children, working on 2 computers and 2 phones and wondering what tomorrow holds – and what is for dinner. No disrespect meant but times have changed even though his statement is VERY true. So how do we make it work. Here are three innumerable benefits that will enhance your life tremendously when you live in the moment: Better Health - By reducing stress and anxiety, you avoid many of the associated health consequences.Improve Your Relationships - Have you ever been with someone physically present, but mentally a somewhere else?Greater Self-Control - You have greater control over your mind, body, and emotions. Imagine how much better your life would be if it were not at the mercy of a racing mind, and unpredictable emotions. Identify Obstacles to Living in the Moment – And the Cure: In today’s busy world, it can be a challenge to live in the moment. The reasons revolve around how our mind works, and outside influences. Worrying – do you cringe when someone suggest “don’t worry so much?” I will admit I do at first, but I deliberately remember and practice these two things. 1. Calm your mind - Living in the moment, you calm your mind, and can see more clearly. The reason some problems seem so daunting is that our mind is racing so fast that we cannot see things as they truly are. So, we make up scenarios in our mind, most of which are unlikely to come true. In addition to seeing more clearly, living in the moment will help us think more realistically. Unrealistic thinking is fueled by confusion and uncontrolled emotions. Calming your mind will reduce confusion and calm your emotions. 2. Learn to Focus on Solutions Instead of Problems - Some people tend to be more solution-oriented, and others more problem-oriented. Some of the factors that may determine this are gender, upbringing, and education. If you are not problem-solving oriented, do not worry. You can train yourself to worry less Unpleasant Situations and Troublesome Past - None of us want to be in unpleasant situations or remember those of the past. They can bring up painful emotions, which we do not want to feel. Sometimes we get put on projects at work with people we have worked on projects with before when they would not contribute, did not care if it got done or not, and the thought of going through the stress and frustration again makes your stomach turn flips. So how do most people cope with painful emotions? By doing whatever we can to avoid them, and we can avoid them by taking our mind to another place and time where things are more pleasant. In other words, we avoid living in the present moment. Some people resort to doing things that stimulate sensory pleasure, such as eating, alcohol or sex. Others will consume substances that dull their mind and keep them from thinking about unpleasant or stressful situations. Sometimes we believe that, to keep things good in our life, we must brace against, ignore, and reject anything not good. This is an incorrect assumption with profound consequences. 1. Agreeing to be present in the hard moments is simply agreeing that what is happening is happening, and that we are in it. We accept that this is what we are living right now, whether we like it or not. We say, “Yes this is so and yes this is hard.” 2. This “Yes as acceptance,” is fundamentally different than “Yes, we want this.” When we accept what is so right now, we give up the fight against what is supposed to be, and the idea that what is happening should not be happening, and certainly not be happening to us. When we give ourselves permission to be “in” the moments that do not feel good, ironically, we experience a kind of wholeness. There is a profound completeness, you could almost call it a joy, in being able to experience life fully, in all its presentations—even the ones we despise. 3. Furthermore, if we are “checking out” on the moments that we do not like, we are an extra step away from being able to change them. It is counter-intuitive, but until we fully accept what is happening, we cannot move on; we reject what is and as a result, what is gets stuck. When we settle into, and accept our starting place, we plant our feet in the place from which we can launch change. Scary though it may feel, agreeing to be here does not mean agreeing to be here forever, it just means agreeing to be here in this moment, right now. A Wandering Mind/Racing Mind - Many busy people have a racing mind that never seems to slow down. Their mind gets so agitated from too much sensory stimulation. You see, anything that stimulates any of our five senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell) will trigger a thought, and that thought leads to another, and then another, and so on. If you have a busy life, all your activities will overstimulate your mind, and make it seemingly impossible to slow it down. And an agitated mind wants to go to another place and time. Make your mind work better for you – from dealing with pesky colleagues to taking the perfect break and doing less for more money. 1. Give your mind more to do - Research by Nilli Lavie at University College London has found that adding deliberate distractions – a jazzy border on a page or a bit of background noise – reduces distractibility. Her “load theory” proposes this works because attention is a limited resource, so if you fill all the attentional “slots” in your mind, it leaves no room for other distractions. 2. Bribe yourself - The prospect of a treat can keep people focused, but only when it is well-timed. This approach probably works best with an accomplice to keep you from caving early. “It’s hard to fool yourself. I personally love a nice latte as soon as the boring project is finished. I can almost taste it while working. 3. Daydream during breaks - Stopping every now and again to give your mind a chance to wander can invigorate focus. It can be beneficial If you say to yourself, now I am going to think about something unrelated, maybe problem-solve something else that is on my mind, and then come back to my task. 4. De-stress - You might think that an adrenaline boost would focus the mind, but stress stimulates the release of hormones, including noradrenaline, which bind to receptors in the cognitive control circuits. This in turn makes it harder for them to keep tabs on mind wandering. 5. Get some sleep – A lack of sleep hurts our mental performance in general and reduces our ability to resist both internal and external distractions. And there is a bonus – sleep is also important for memory consolidation. 6. Doodle - In a study, people forced to listen to a boring voice recording were able to remember more afterwards if they could doodle. But content is important. Doodling about something related to what you are trying to remember is more likely to qualify as intentional mind wandering, which can help you focus on the task at hand. Do not be too elaborate, however – if your doodles become too engaging, the whole thing might backfire. Wharever is going on in your life, stay in the now - don't miss out on this day we are living..... Read the full article

21 Things BuzzFeed News Tried And Loved In 2019
As the tech and business team at BuzzFeed News, we love stuff. Gizmos, gadgets, games, and gear. So here are some of the many things that we tried this year and wholeheartedly recommend.
1. Forest App — Free
Can you go half a minute without checking Twitter, or TikTok, or Facebook? I bet you didn’t make it through that sentence without gazing longingly at another tab. How does one get work done in such a distracting world? Some of us have given up. For the rest of us, there’s Forest. No, not the one with trees. Don’t get carried away. I’m talking about Forest, the app, and also a browser extension, that helps you concentrate. When you use Forest, you can choose to block certain websites, or stop using your phone, for 25 minutes intervals. When you start your countdown, Forest displays a small shrub, which grows until it’s a fully mature digital tree at the 25-minute mark. If you try to navigate to your forbidden websites — which you can whitelist or blacklist — you will kill your tree. And since you don’t want to be a tree murderer, you will concentrate and enrich your life, or your company, and live happily ever after.
—Alex Kantrowitz
2. Google Doodle Polls — Free
Toward the end of 2018, I attended my first meeting for what became the BuzzFeed News Union. When it was time to plan when we’d meet next, there came that inevitable murmur of everyone pulling up their calendars, throwing out a bunch of dates, and then someone else saying they weren’t free — but how about this day? Rather than let that agony go on any longer, I volunteered to just make a Doodle. “What’s a Doodle?” someone asked. “What’s a DOODLE?!” I probably shrieked back, stunned that so many people didn’t know about the productivity tool I’ve been loyally using for at least six years.
Doodle is pretty simple: It’s a scheduling tool that makes planning meetings ridiculously easy. You select a bunch of possible dates and send them to the attendees. They check off which dates they could do. At the end, you have a neat little tally showing which day most people are free.
But Doodle isn’t just for meetings! It’s also how I kept my book club a well-oiled machine this year. And there’s truly no better way to plan a dinner with that group of friends you’ve been meaning to catch up with. Maybe I sound like a square using a productivity tool to manage relationships, but it’s the simplest way to push past the “I’ve just been so busy!!” excuses and find time to see the people you love. I often find myself wondering what else I could be using Doodle for: A family reunion? A weekend trip with my college friends? And when will Doodle integrate with dating apps? Can it please be now?
Several months — and more than a dozen Doodle polls — later, we officially formed the BuzzFeed News Union. And while that was mostly thanks to the hard work of my colleagues, I like to think Doodle deserves a little bit of credit as well.
—Julia Reinstein
3. Apple EarPods — Free With an iPhone
At the end of 2017, I said that Apple’s AirPods were my favorite gadget of the year. At the end of 2019, I am retracting my opinion. AirPods are trash — after about two years, when the tiny battery in each one begins to die, and your $159 pair of earphones start sputtering out in minutes. Your only recourse is buying an expensive, out-of-warranty replacement or a brand-new pair from Apple.
So earlier this year, I abandoned my AirPods for something a lot less sexy: the simple white wired earbuds that came with my iPhone.
Sure, I can’t plug EarPods, which is what Apple officially calls them, into my MacBook, something that drives me nuts, and sure, I have wires dangling out of my ears like we all did not that long ago. But they also NEVER die on me in the middle of a podcast because the battery died, and I NEVER have to charge them, and if I ever lose them, new ones are $29 a pop, far less than what a single replacement AirPod costs. And they don’t sound any worse than AirPods.
When AirPods work, they are magical. But when they flake out, as AirPods inevitably will, they make the simple act of listening an experience fraught with anxiety — I could never predict when I’d hear the telltale chirp in my ears that meant the battery was depleted, sometimes just minutes after a full charge.
Now, I shove my trusty little EarPods into my ears and just go. Around me, millions of human beings swirl freely, unencumbered by wires, but hours later, my EarPods keeping playing and playing and playing. It’s magical — and it works every time.
—Pranav Dixit
4. Google Home Mini — $14.99 on Amazon
This year, for me, has been about investing some energy into making the devices and apps I regularly use fit into my life better. It’s weird that the technology’s default mode right now is changing human behavior rather than adapting to it. After moving to a new apartment, I realized the Google Home I’ve had for about two years really couldn’t cover multiple rooms, so on a lark I picked up a Google Home Mini and threw it in my bedroom. The two devices work seamlessly together. I bought a bunch of cheap Wi-Fi outlets and plugged some lamps into them in different rooms, which lets me turn lights on and off like I’m living on the starship Enterprise. I can move a song on Spotify around my apartment, from one Google Home to another. The Mini’s speaker is just the right size for a bedroom. In the morning, it tells me the weather and plays a few headlines. This all sounds extremely basic and it is, but it’s also exactly the right relationship I think we should have with smarthome technology — add a little bit at a time when you feel like it, see if you like it, casually adjust accordingly, have fun with it.
—Ryan Broderick
5. Feedly and Pocket Apps — $6/month and $4.99/month
Over the last four years, my personal internet had mostly shrunk down to just Twitter — which is by all accounts an irredeemably awful website full of the worst kind of content being created by the worst people on Earth. To fix this, I started paying for the RSS reader Feedly ($6 a month) and the read-it-later app Pocket ($4.99 a month). I mainly use Feedly for work. The paid version supports Google Alerts and works really well on mobile. Pocket, according to my phone’s screen time, is regularly in my top three most-used apps. I’ve used the free version for years, but the paid version has a really powerful search function, which means that whatever I put in there is easily findable, online and off. Pocket also has a Spotify-like algorithm that is always recommending me stuff to read based on what I’ve previously loaded in there (it used to be better, but sadly now it mostly just recommends Pocket originals which I’m kinda meh on). Both apps have helped me focus better, follow the news more easily, and actually enjoy the long-forgotten feeling of digging into something interesting on the internet. Read more websites in 2020!
—Ryan Broderick
6. Nintendo Switch — $298.99 on Amazon
I’ve technically had a Switch for about a year and a half, originally buying it for a European vacation with lots of train rides. In the last year, I really dove into its catalog of games. I’m by no means a Real Gamer — I’m 30 and the last system I owned was a Nintendo GameCube. That means I mainly just want to play a bunch of cartoony RPGs, remakes of old games, and a bunch of party games for when friends come over. I also travel a lot. All of these things make the Switch one of my favorite devices. Big games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Astral Chain, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and this month’s Pokémon Sword and Shield are genuine joys. And the Nintendo store has all kinds of cheap mid-sized games that you can just jump into whenever you want to kill some time, like Untitled Goose Game, Sonic Mania, and Hollow Knight. The console is also incredibly portable with a shockingly good battery life. Plus, Nintendo has for the most part avoided the toxic cultural wars that follow other video games. Instead, I can come home, lay around with my Switch, and spend a mindless couple hours trying to catch a shiny Galarian Rapidash in peace.
—Ryan Broderick
7. Instagram’s Close Friends Stories — Free
As someone whose private Instagram account is PG-13 at its absolute most risqué, I initially brushed off Instagram’s “close friends” stories feature as unnecessary. But Instagram has become my main means of sharing and communicating, my followers now include my boss, colleagues, aunts, married high school friends, acquaintances — as well as several dudes from Hinge who will apparently continue watching my stories until one of us dies. So the close friends feature has become my go-to. Whether I want to deliver an update while perhaps being a little drunker than advisable, share a meme without individually messaging it to seven different people, or just generally be a little sad/weird/vulnerable online, close friends has become both a micro version of a finsta and the realest version of myself I share anywhere on the internet. It’s some small comfort to take back a bit of privacy on social media — as much as privacy exists there at all, of course.
—Olivia Niland
8. Scam Goddess — Free
The summer of scam may be over, but scam springs eternal — and Laci Mosley keeps us informed on Earwolf’s Scam Goddess podcast. She’s tackled everything from Anna Delvey, aka the Soho Scammer, that nationwide Airbnb scam, and the absolutely bonkers Ukrainian orphan story since the podcast began in September. Mosley’s guests have included Paul F. Tompkins, Lauren Lapkus, and Nicole Byer, so while the show can’t help being hysterical, at least once per episode she delivers a line so strikingly, memorably, out-of-left-field funny that I find myself rewinding to listen over and over again. Scam Goddess is true crime without the ick factor, a bubblegum fun listen with a dose of education, and a breath of fresh air in my podcast feed.
—Olivia Niland
9. Silicone Case for Apple TV Remote — $7.45 on Amazon
This was the year I finally cut the cord on cable television, which meant I used the Apple TV remote a lot more than before. I have a fourth gen Apple TV (the 2015 release that was the first model with Siri), and my chief complaint is that the remote is incredibly slippery. Not only do I find it slippery in terms of trying to scroll with my thumb on the trackpad, but the damned thing flies out of my hand like a bar of soap in the tub. I literally marvel at it sometimes wondering how Apple sells something that is impossible to hold. Steve would never!
Here’s where the silicone sleeve comes in. It’s anti-slip, and it gives a tiny bit more girth and bulk to the remote to make it easier to hold. My only regret is buying it in black. I’d recommend getting a bright, easy-to-see color, because you know the Apple TV remote is always getting lost.
—Katie Notopoulos
10. Idagio Classical Music Streaming App — Free or $9.99/month
A few years ago, I wrote an article about the current state of the used CD market and discovered that one genre that still thrives on CD is classical. It isn’t just the better sound quality or that it’s for old people (OK, maybe that’s part of it), but rather that streaming apps like Spotify are terrible at organizing classical music. Unlike pop music, where Spotify’s algorithms and playlists can create amazing guesses on what you’d like to hear, classical is quite different.
The metadata is different — do you want to search by composer or conductor, orchestra or soloist? Also, many classical “albums” have several composers — a CD might be one orchestra’s concert of Mozart and Beethoven together, making an album search confusing. And there are dozens of versions of specific pieces recorded by different groups.
Idagio was recommended to me by a few people on Twitter after I tweeted complaining about the lack of good streaming for classical. The paid version (I signed up for a free week trial) was great — interesting curated playlists, good search, and recommendations — everything you’d want from a dedicated streaming app for classical. You can browse by composer, ensemble, conductor, soloist, genre, period, or even instrument. There are curated playlists from composers and soloists and even things like highlights from the London Symphony’s 2019–2020 season.
That said, I didn’t feel up to paying $9.99/month for yet another streaming service. I already pay for Spotify’s family plan, plus SiriusXM (which is soooo expensive, but I need my Howard Stern). So I canceled it after the free trial.
But this fall, Idagio released a free version. Not all the features of the paid version are available on the free version, crucially the ability to play a specific track. For example, you can’t play an exact Richard Strauss song, but you can play the Essential Richard Strauss radio playlist. Even so, it’s still the best free classical listening experience you can get.
––Katie Notopoulos
11. Curology — Subscriptions From $24.90/Month
Perhaps it was naive of me, but I assumed that once I got out of my teenage years, I wouldn’t have to worry about acne. And then I hit my late twenties, and BOOM — some sort of cursed second puberty, complete with painful cyst-like zits that I couldn’t remember having as a youth. I tried every “miracle” mask, face wash, toner, acne cream, oil, etc. Nothing helped.
In May, after years of extreme self-consciousness every time I had a flare-up, I stumbled across a thread on the /r/SkinCareAddiction subreddit about Curology, a subscription mail-order acne medication service. Since I had nothing to lose, I gave it a try. A week and a half later, I got a little white bottle in the mail that literally changed my life.
It’s been six months and the hormonal acne on my chin that I thought I’d be cursed with forever is all but nonexistent. The discoloration marks on my chin and around my nose have begun to fade and my skin tone is even in a way that it’s never been before. When I get a zit or two, they aren’t painful and they’re gone after a few days of my normal cleaning and Curology routine. My prescriber has answered every question I’ve had promptly and I have yet to have any problems with my shipment — and I still can’t believe I’m only paying $40 every other month for something that’s had such a profound change on my skin and day-to-day existence.
—Ellie Hall
12. SoFi Banking App — Free
Banks suck. I like money just fine, but I’ve always resented the institutions that hold onto the money for me. For years, I had a checking account at Wells Fargo, which, thanks to a massive scandal in which the company opened at least 3.5 million “potentially unauthorized” accounts, I now very much regret. Then I put my money in a local credit union, which somehow meant I was never able to access it unless I went to one specific office in San Francisco that never seemed to be open. So when I needed to open a new account earlier this year, you can imagine my trepidation — send my money to an evil empire with a UX from 1995 or to a rickety storefront in some basement, which also somehow had a UX from 1995?
Enter SoFi, the startup lending company which launched a mobile banking and investment app in February. I opened an account and now do all my finances from the free mobile app. It’s great. It’s a money market account, so I earn a small amount on my deposit and can easily pay bills, transfer money (similar to Venmo), and invest in the low-fee index funds dear to my heart. The UX looks like it was designed in this decade, and the investment side isn’t cluttered up with a bunch of unintelligible quant gibberish. (Looking directly at you, E-Trade.)
My eyes aren’t closed. SoFi seems to have previously been a terrible place to work. I sincerely hope the culture is better for employees under new CEO Anthony Noto, because I really like this app. Now if I could just convince my boomer psychotherapist to let me pay him on it instead of writing paper checks.
—Scott Lucas
13. Frogstagram — Free
Frogs: They’re usually small, sometimes green, and always delightful to follow on Instagram.
I stumbled upon Frogblr, the unofficial community of frog-owning Tumblr users, in early 2018. In the months following that, I realized many of my favorite frog blogs also had frog-themed Instagram accounts. So in 2019, I fully committed and now follow more than a dozen Instagram accounts operated by frog owners.
There’s @stickyfrogs, which features frogs named Gumby, Jeans, Voight, and Tiny. I also love @moonnight.17, which has wonderfully TINY frogs, as well as small snakes and geckos. I’m also a fan of @frog.wizard_, which has extremely earnest frog-themed memes. Also, @the_froggy_momma is great. She features dozens of different amphibians and reptiles, including frogs named Buttercup, Bertha (who has three legs), Norman, and Darla.
Of course, the frogs are incredibly cute. I love their big eyes and oddly shaped little bodies. But it’s equally joyful to watch their owners livestream the frogs, call them goofy names, and brag about everything they do (which is, in all honesty, not very much). It’s very sincere. I’d highly recommend going through the #frogsofinstagram tag and findings some accounts to follow.
—Caroline Haskins
14. Nuking All the Digital Evidence From Before My Haircut — Free
Bangs are not just my haircut. They are a crucial part of my personality. There are two stages of my life: before bangs and after. If you ever have the misfortune of glancing at my giant forehead, you will understand.
I got bangs in January 2017. Tragically, that is not very long ago. So I decided this year to delete and untag myself in any Instagram or Facebook photos before bangs. I also deleted all of my tweets in January 2018, which would have included any images of me from before I got my haircut.
This may sound dramatic. However, I promise it is not. If I’m honest, this isn’t just about liking my current haircut. It’s about having some control over the ways that I’m seen online. I keep the number of public pictures of me to an absolute minimum, and exercising some private control over my image feels like a natural extension of that instinct. Now with bangs.
—Caroline Haskins
15. TikTok — Free
It’s more than just funny, although it’s funnier than almost anything on television. TikTok is as much a portal into the everyday lives of other people as Chatroulette ever was, but without the expectation to engage with what you’re seeing. It’s the only social app on which I follow only delightful strangers, don’t consume content from anyone I know, nor feel pressure to post content myself. TikTok shows me a greater diversity of race, class, and, yes, age than any other platform I currently have access to. I’ve watched videos made by Mennonite teenagers, by hippie grandmas, by immigrant families. TikTok isn’t all jokes; I’ve watched girls do interpretive dances to the soundtrack of abusive boyfriends and screaming parents. I’ve watched videos expressing queer pride, native pride, ethnic pride. I’ve watched hours of TikToks; I’ve watched TikToks about being a 30-year-old woman addicted to TikTok. I conceal the extent of my TikTok watching from my partner.
I used to be addicted to Instagram, scrolling endlessly and closing the app only to immediately reopen it seconds later. But now, that pink and orange neon square doesn’t beckon the way it used to. I’d rather be watching TikToks, which pass no judgment on my baking, never make me wonder if I’m taking enough vacations, buying enough candles, or wearing fuzzy enough sweaters. What TikTok offers is comedic, absurd, and intimate. The only problem is now I need headphones in public, and I might be under surveillance by the Chinese state.
—Caroline O’Donovan
16. Send to Kindle for Google Chrome — Free
I’m trying to spend less time looking at my phone and have become obsessed with looking at my screen time stats (in the iPhone’s settings app). My most-used app, other than Instagram, is always Safari or Pocket, because that’s where I read long articles — actually, where I try to read long articles, but never finish in one sitting because some news alert or push notification has pulled me away from the story.
In an attempt to create a more distraction-free reading space, I’ve started to send any article of length to my Kindle, which has a black-and-white screen that’s more comfortable on the eyes. This Chrome extension makes it so easy. It grabs all the text on the page and zooms it right over to my e-ink reader in less than a minute. And it really works! I plowed through an entire ~3,800-word piece without reading one incoming WhatsApp and loved every minute of it!! (BTW, the fantastic, multithousand-word story is by my colleague Katherine Miller, and you will not regret spending 15 uninterrupted minutes on it.)

17. Tile Pro — $35 and Tile Sticker — $40 2-pack
I’ve been yelling at people to get Tile’s Bluetooth-enabled thing finders, for years, but with the caveat that the device’s biggest flaw is the way it handles its battery, which is glued onto the device’s circuit board and can’t be replaced. Not great for the environment.
Well, the latest version of the Tile Pro finally has a replaceable battery!!! This is huge because the Tile really is a wonderful little doodad for helping you find keys, your kid’s fave toy, etc., and now you don’t have to throw away the entire device when it runs out of juice a year from now.
There’s another new Tile, called Sticker, which unfortunately doesn’t have a replaceable battery, but it lasts three years, which is very good for an always-on Bluetooth device. It’s also small enough to put on my AirPods case and stick discreetly on my bike. I haven’t lost either yet — but I am a huge fan of these tiny things.

18. Streaming Co-Op — Free
It has been active for years, but in 2019 my streaming cooperative really began to shine. The idea is so obvious that you may be in one already: a group of friends — comrades, one might call them — who each subscribe to one streaming service and share the login details with all the others.
As it currently stands, I pay for Netflix, a friend in San Francisco pays for Hulu and another here in New York pays for HBO Now. We all pay for Amazon Prime, because Amazon. The co-op is currently onboarding a fourth member who will pay for Disney+. Scale!
Sharing passwords like this might go against the fine print of the average streaming user agreement, but it doesn’t seem to be against the spirit of them — most allow two and sometimes four seperate devices, in completely different locations, to be streaming simultaneously. Unless we’re talking about a situation where every member of the co-op is watching the same service at the same time (Does this really happen in a post-GoT world??), you should be just fine.
And given the trend, this might be the only workable model for watching stuff in the 2020s: Apple, Netflix, Amazon, HBO, and Hulu will all have exclusive shows you can’t see anywhere else, while Disney and its fellow content mega-giants will be using their vast libraries to funnel people into their own platforms. In a world with 8 to 10 streaming services each demanding 12 bucks a month — and we’re not even including cable channels, for those who want live sports or CNN or whatever — a co-op is the only game in town. Viewers of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your passwords.

19. Buy Nothing Project — Free
On Jan. 1, 2019, Netflix released Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, a reality series consisting of eight episodes of sweet lifestyle porn. The smiling, soft-spoken, petite host gently floats into people’s messy, cluttered homes, like an organizational Mary Poppins, and — from the shambles — helps them create a peaceful space to live and breathe and be joyful. Deep. There were moments during the show, however, when I wondered what exactly happened to all that perfectly usable stuff that Kondo helped them thank in a moment of ritual silence before tossing it into a trash bag in the driveway. Is it all headed to the landfill before ending up in crushed shards in some whale’s guts or up some turtle’s nostril?
One answer to this problem is the Buy Nothing Project, a network of local groups on Facebook started in 2013 “to quickly get rid of things that are cluttering their lives, or simply to save money by getting things for free.” The groups — which have popped up around the world — are organized by city, sometimes even by neighborhood. Some members post items they’re ready to “gift” to their neighbors, and others post things they need, in case anyone happens to be looking to expel that object from their house.
People gift clothes they no longer want or that don’t fit, furniture that doesn’t work in a new apartment (even a fireplace), storage and packing boxes, cosmetics and other beauty products that aren’t exactly the color or scent they were looking for, kitchen gadgets and spices they don’t use — the list goes on. One popular member regularly gives away extra bagels (local hero!). My most recent acquisition was a bunch of baby spider plants from an indoor gardening enthusiast who is propagating her plants and who — it turns out — lives across the street from me. It can be a nice way to meet neighbors with shared interests, which is part of the project’s ethos: “A gift economy’s real wealth is the people involved and the web of connections that forms to support them.”
I’ve found it to be an especially fabulous resource for new parents like me, since babies grow out of (or grow tired of) everything in just a few short months — onesies, shoes, toys, feeding gear — and a Buy Nothing group creates a pipeline to people in a similar life stage as you and who also live near you. It’s way easier than holding a yard sale and preferable to plopping a box of stuff on the sidewalk with a “FREE” sign and hoping for the best.
Life is fluid and ever-changing, but most of our stuff outlives its utility. I’ve really embraced the idea of letting things go when I no longer need them. My place isn’t Marie Kondo–level tidy — and probably never will be — but a Facebook group that facilitates free, no-landfill decluttering really can spark joy.

20. #great-tweets — Free
This feels kind of like cheating because this isn’t a product that normies can access. Also it’s not new: I’ve been using it for the last two-and-a-half years at BuzzFeed News, when in my first week here someone showed me its greatness and my world perspective was forever changed. With this product — or more aptly place — the 473 people who can see it will on any given day find memes about Baby Yoda, a listing for a toddler’s (unused) Minion coffin, wedding photos from the holy matrimony between two water coolers, and screenshots of an influencer tanning their perineum, a.k.a. “buttchugging sunlight”. And that was all just on a random Monday in November.
This wonderful watering hole of content is known within BuzzFeed as #great-tweets, a Slack channel open to everyone at the company where folks pop in to just share really good tweets. There’s little conversation — save for the emoji reactions that fellow great-tweeters use to express their gratitude or disgust — and each day it’s a continuous stream of hits, 10 to 15 of the funniest, weirdest, nastiest things taken from the blue bird hellsite that most of us here spend too much time on. Maybe the tweets have been ripped from another platform (TikTok is a pretty popular source these days). Maybe the tweets have already gone superviral. But they are our great tweets, and we love them.
While I feel a little dirty sharing the existence of my colleague’s secret space with the public, #great-tweets is just that good. After spending some pretty terrible days online at work, I’ve spent many a night lying in bed laughing my ass off because someone shared a tweet with a hypothetical conversation between a cat and an octopus in a standoff, or a cow wearing a VR headset. It’s one of the few things that I know can consistently bring me joy on the web and I hope when I go, I too will be memorialized in the channel.

21. Neato Botvac D7 — $599.99
One of the best things to happen to my family in 2019 was Kevin, the robotic vacuum cleaner. Kevin is a BOTVAC D7, and he is a cleaning monster in a household of 4 sloppy humans, 2 sloppier dogs, and a cat aghast at their collective sloppiness. When my home is dirty, I summon Kevin from my phone. Kevin is always ready to clean. He is very good with dust and dirt, and — crucially — his blade-and-bristle brush makes short work of dog hair, which is in issue in home with 200 lbs. of doggo, where things can go from relatively clean to dog park very quickly. When Kevin gets stuck or encounters an insurmountable obstacle, he messages me asking for help. It feels stupid to say it, but I find this adorable. Part of this is because that help typically involves picking Kevin up like a baby and relocating him to an easier navigate area. And part of it is because afterwards Kevin will message me again noting — like a dorky little grade school cartographer — that he has updated his map of my home. Two things here: 1. Kevin uses exclamation points! 2. I can use this map to create zones for targeted cleaning (kitchen, dog bowl area) and also out-of-bounds areas for Kevin to ignore (dog bed, dog). My home is a small one, so Kevin’s advertised battery life of 120 minutes has always been plenty. He automatically switches cleaning modes when running on wood, carpet, or tile. Typically, there is no (to little) visible dog hair on those surfaces when Kevin is in town. Kevin’s lone flaw, as best I can tell, is that his dirt bin can be easily overwhelmed during spring “blow,” but in a house with these two, who wouldn’t be.

Isra Character Bio
So I finally sat down and wrote out the full bio for Isra! Woo!! Now a lot of these answers are based on the events up to chapter 5 in The Scion, so slight spoilers for the first arc. Also, a lot of these questions are answered by Isra herself, though when she can’t, I labeled them with a WOG so you know that’s my answer.
Character bio template can be found here: http://yeahwrite.co/post/24774343500
ORIGINS & FAMILY:
Name: Isra Luana Douglas
Nickname: Bakagou likes to call me shadowy bitch. Flint prefers Ningyo. Flint’s is my favorite.
Reason for name: Isra means nocturnal journey, which given my dad’s family quirk, fits really well. It was also suggested by a family friend, though I can’t remember who. Luana was also tossed around, but according to Mom, she didn’t think it would fit as well. I agree, and am glad they went with Isra and not Luana.
Birthday: February 13 (Aquarius). I especially love it when it falls on a Friday. If only Japan had the same superstitions.
Age: 14. I will be 15 in time for the Entrance Exam.
Gender: Girl, she/her.
Place of birth: Honolulu, Hawaii.
Places lived since: Mustafa, Japan.
Parents’ names, backgrounds, occupations: Galen was my dad’s name. I don’t remember what he did before he died. Zoey was my mom’s name, and I think she was a pediatric nurse? She was really sick for the last year she was with us, so I can’t really remember what she did either.
Number of siblings: Flint is technically considered my brother, since Sophia adopted me and we grew up together. I don’t really remember Jack, since we really little when he died with Dad, but according to Sophia, we were close, like twins generally are in their early years.
Relationship with family: Dad’s side is pretty much gone. Mom’s side, outside of Sophia and Flint, are all dicks and can never speak to me again, and I would not care.
Happiest memory: There was that time Mom was well enough to be out of the hospital in time for my birthday, so we went down to the beach and built sandcastles. Mom wanted it to be a big party and invite all my friends, but I really just wanted her, Sophia and Flint. Mom even got me a book I really loved, while Sophia got me this game that I could play with Mom when she had to go back to the hospital. Flint showed me how to bodyboard in the waves, and even let me try his board. After we had dinner, and then a cake. Mom let me have her piece, and then laughed because I got it all over my face.
...That was the last time Mom got to celebrate my birthday.
Childhood trauma: I guess having both my dad and brother dying before I was even 4. And then mom got sick and died too. Then the CHI targeting me because of my “villainous” quirk. Honestly, the deflating grades is probably the least bad thing to happen to me, though the school in general was full of dicks.
Children of her own?: I’m 14. What kids?
PHYSICAL
Height: 5’6.5” or 169 cm. An inch taller than Izuku.
Weight: I thought it was rude to ask a person their weight? I guess maybe about 150 pounds. That or 70 kg. I don’t know, I don’t weigh myself regularly.
Build: What? I guess I’m fit, and I don’t have much in way of hips or chest. I’m 14.
Nationality: American, White.
Disabilities: Um… chronic pain in my leg, though only affects me if I did a lot of running. Sophia thinks I might have ADHD, but I’ve been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. The second one’s been around since I was little, and mostly shows itself as being unable to talk in certain situations, particularly in schools and around teachers. I’ve been working on it, and I can use my quirk or sign language to communicate, I just can’t speak. I’m on antidepressants for the others, and am mostly fine.
Complexion: Tanned, no freckles. Definitely have acne, though it’s mostly on the shoulders and back. No notable birthmarks.
Face shape: Face shape? I mean, I guess it’s round?
Distinguishing facial features: Given that I’m white in Japan? Eye Shape.
Hair color: Violet, though the tips go black when I use my quirk for long periods of time.
Usual hair style: It’s normally down, though I tie it back when working out. There is this annoying strand that for some reason stays short and tends hang between my eyes.
Eye color: It’s a light grey most of the time, though turns black when I use my quirk.
Glasses? Contacts?: I have glasses. Aizawa-sensei says I may need to get contacts when I get into high school if I’m going to become a hero, since glasses will just get in the way. I get that, they just feel weird.
Style of dress/typical outfit(s): Loose, long, baggy. I prefer graphic tees, but they stand out like a sore thumb, so I tend to stick with solid cool colors.
Typical style of shoes: No heels. Covered shows that I can slip on and off are great.
Health: I’m generally in good health and don’t get sick often. When I do… urgh.
Grooming: People wear clothes that are already dirty?! Yuck! Anyways, I tend to shower once a day, and my clothes are cleaned regularly. Hair is brushed a couple times a day, but I don’t do anything fancy. I do have to also wash my face before bed, but I don’t wear makeup. Pretty sure it’s against school rules anyway.
Jewelry? Tattoos? Piercings?: Pretty sure those are against school rules. I don’t like jewelry that much, and don’t care for piercings. As for tattoos, I’m in Japan. Tattoos aren’t seen… favorably here.
Accent?: I guess it’s close to Standard American, with a bit of Hawaiian? At least in English. According to Izuku, my Japanese sounds pretty American, though I do have the r down.
Unique mannerisms/physical habits: According to Sophia, I tend to bite bottom lip when I’m concentrating. I tap my foot when impatient. I also tend to walk quietly and my shoes get really worn out by the balls of my feet. My quirk tends to act up when I’m nervous or stressed out.
Athletic?: Training to become a hero, and Mom insisted that Flint and I take martial arts after Dad and Jack...
INTELLECT
Level of education: Third Year Middle School, which is about equivalent to a Freshman in High School in America.
Level of self esteem: I know I’m smart, I know I have a good quirk. I also know that I’m not the best.
Gifts/talents: I have a nice strong quirk, and I tend to pick up on things quickly, especially if there’s a clear pattern.
Shortcomings: ...I really have a hard time speaking aloud, especially around strangers. I also don’t like putting up with other people’s shit and will call them out, which some people don’t like. It’s led to a couple of fights.
Style of speech: Um… I guess pretty informal?
“Left brain” or “right brain” thinker?: I prefer to be pretty logical, but according to Yagi-sensei and Aizawa-sensei, I can come up with some really odd ideas. Don’t know what they mean, after all, how else will Izuku learn not to block with his elbows without a bit of pain? Trust me, if you want strange ideas, get Izuku started on one of his quirk ramblings. Some of his theories and ideas can be pretty out there.
Artistic?: I like art, and doodling helps me concentrate. Flint has been pushing me to try drawing.
Mathematical?: Oh math? That’s easy. At least the tests and classes would be if I could understand what the teacher is asking. I know he’s doing it on purpose, but it gets really frustrating when on tests, he throws in kanji that I almost never see, without the hiragana.
Makes decisions based mostly on emotions, or on logic?: ...There are people who can make decisions based on logic without it taking forever to decide?
Neuroses: What’s neuroses? ...Oh. Um, I do have extreme anxiety, and have since I was little, hence the mutism. I was also diagnosed with depression, and was maybe not in a good place before I met Izuku… And I do have PTSD after CHI. I’m working on it with a therapist and psych, and I’m doing a lot better, but I do have moments were I just… reset to a couple of years ago. I wish I could get better faster.
Life philosophy: Go out and do what I want to do. Life is too short for regrets.
Religious stance: The stories can be pretty interesting. I just don’t believe in that stuff. And if I find something funny in the story, I will laugh, sacred text be damned.
Cautious or daring?: Depends. I’m not as cautious as Izuku, but I’m nowhere near as daring as Bakagou. Then again, that’s probably a good thing.
Most sensitive about/vulnerable to: I really don’t like people judging others about their quirks. I also am very sensitive about my own quirk. I don’t like not being able to use it if I need to. It’s probably the main reason I don’t feel fully comfortable around Aizawa-sensei after Izuku realized who he was. I just… had a bad experience when I wasn’t able to use my quirk.
Optimist or pessimist?: I think I’m more a realist. I prefer the thought of prepare for the worst, hope for the best. I do like looking for the bright side of something when things are shitty.
Extrovert or introvert?: Mix. Crowds are tiring, but I do like hanging out with Izuku, Flint, Aunty Inko, and Sophia. Aizawa-sensei is good too, but Yagi-sensei can be draining.
Level of comfort with technology: I know how to use the devices I come into contact with, but I would not be able to fix them. Breaking them is easy, though, especially if I’m allowed my quirk.
RELATIONSHIPS
Current marital/relationship status: Single. A little busy with school, training and studying. Plus all the kids at school are jackasses.
Sexual orientation: ...I don’t know. I don’t quite understand what everyone means by hot and wanting to bang someone. Not even Izuku could really explain it in a way that makes sense. Oh well, Sophia doesn’t seem too worried about it, so maybe it’s not so bad. (WOG: She’s ace/aro, just hasn’t quite realized it yet. She’s 14.)
Past relationships: None.
Primary reason for being broken up with: Kinda need to have had one to be broken up with.
Primary reasons for breaking up with people: Again, need a relationship for a break up.
Level of sexual experience: Um, virgin. I haven’t dated at all.
Story of first kiss: I haven’t really thought about it. I don’t know, maybe after a romantic date? Do people seriously think about this stuff at my age? I thought that was just a thing for stories.
Story of loss of virginity: Um, what? I’m 14. I haven’t given it much thought. I guess if I meet someone I really like?
A social person?: I don’t have many friends, but those I do I will fight for. Most people are put off by the mutism, and I really don’t like interacting with strangers, especially in large crowds.
Most comfortable around: Hard to say, but if I had to pick, Izuku.
Oldest friend: Hina. Jack and I met her back in daycare. We were together until I moved to Japan. We’re still in touch.
How does he/she think others perceive her?: I think the mutism puts a lot of people off. I also do tend to pick fights, though most of the time they’re asking for it.
How do others actually perceive her?: WOG: A lot of people see her as a haughty foreigner who befriended the quirkless freak who wants to be a hero. Toshinori and Aizawa see the hard worker she is, and how protective she is of Izuku.
VOCATION
Profession: I’m a student, about to become a hero-in-training.
Past occupations: I didn’t know there was an occupation before student.
Passions: I like learning, and I want to make sure no one feels hopeless and alone.
Attitude towards current job: It depends on the subject. I do like learning, when the teachers are competent and will actually treat their teachers fairly. Orudera sucks ass.
Attitude towards current coworkers, bosses, employees: Most of the other students are assholes who I wish would leave Izuku alone. Seriously, what did he do to them to warrant all the shit they put him through? Don’t answer that, I know they’re just entitled assholes who need to feel better about themselves and are just taking it out on him. Teachers aren’t much better, though if Aizawa-sensei is any indication, UA is a million light years better.
Salary: Wait, I’m supposed to be paid? Jesus, all my schools were full of dicks if they were skipping out on my paycheck.
SECRETS (Every character–no matter how minor–should always have secrets!)
Phobias: Abandoned buildings remind me a bit too much of CHI. I also don’t like being in hospitals, though I’m better there than abandoned buildings. Also I don’t like being unable to use my quirk. Honestly, if Aizawa-sensei were to erase my quirk, I’d probably have a panic attack.
Life goals: To become an Underground Hero.
Dreams: To save others so they don’t have to feel helpless.
Greatest fears: Being unable to protect the ones I love.
Most ashamed of: Those months between CHI and becoming friends with Izuku. I really, really wasn’t in a good place.
Most embarrassing thing ever to happen to her: Oh god, there was this one time where we were showing Flint’s friend Naotsu Todoroki how to have fun at the mall. Well, my shoes came undone, which Izuku pointed out. Now I never trip on them, so I just rolled my eyes. Then we go up the escalator. Just as we’re stepping off, the escalator decides to eat my laces. Nearly broke my nose and had to get new shoes after that. Flint could not stop laughing for the rest of the day.
Compulsions: Checking a new location and new people with my quirk. Just constantly checking that my quirk is working.
Obsessions: I guess my need to constantly make sure my quirk is on and working counts.
Secret hobbies: I like to read and doodle. Most of my free time is spent studying and working on my Japanese with Izuku. He also likes to drag me to his hero fights just so he has someone to help him analyze and bounce ideas off.
Secret skills: Good at martial arts, being just below first dan in both judo and taekwondo.
Past sexual transgressions: ...what?
Crimes committed: I guess quirk usage? Does that count, cause everyone breaks that law, and you don’t really get in much trouble, so long as it’s not for vigilante/villainous stuff.
What she most wants to change about her current life: I’d kinda like not to have all the shit wrong in my head. Also wouldn’t mind having my parents and Jack back.
What she most wants to change about her physical appearance: My hair is a little noticeable. I’d probably just change it to be like a black or dark brown, something that’d blend into the shadows a little better.
DETAILS/QUIRKS
Daily routine: Get up, get ready, drag Izuku to school (hopefully without running into any hero fights on the way), nap when I can, doodle or do homework in the classes where the teacher won’t let me sleep, have lunch with Fujita-sensei and Izuku, after school go and train with Yagi-sensei and maybe Aizawa-sensei, go home and finish my homework with Izuku.
Night owl or early bird?: Night owl, oh so much.
Light or heavy sleeper?: Apparently I’m a pretty heavy sleeper, even when sleep walking. Sophia’s given up on waking me and just puts me back in bed. Thank god our front door is locked.
Favorite food: Strawberry Bon Bons are the absolute best.
Least favorite food: You give me anything with even the littlest amount of spice and I will break all the toes in your feet.
Favorite book: Flint had me read this book a few years back called Blue Skin of the Sea, and it was pretty good. I don’t have much in way of favorite books, though.
Least favorite book: If a book is so bad, I will drop it within a few chapters. I guess I’d have to say Warriors got pretty bad after the first couple of series. And there was that bear series the same author wrote that wasn’t that good.
Favorite movie: A classic, but The Princess Bride. I have a few memories of curling up with Mom, Flint and Sophia just laughing at it. Haven’t watched it in years.
Least favorite movie: I swear to god if Izuku makes me watch that All Might movie again, I will put him in a fucking choke hold. That or make him watch Watership Down.
Favorite song: Oh god… If it’s just musical pieces, Hopes and Dreams from Undertale. But if it needs words, either Kuraiinu’s English Cover of Peace Song or Sora ni Utaeba by amazarashi.
Least favorite song: 100 Years, by Five for Fighting. My homeroom teacher back in 6th grade insisted on having us sing it. Just thinking about it reminds me of her.
Coffee or tea?: Tea, particularly non-bitter. Caffeine doesn’t really work on me anyways.
Crunchy or smooth peanut butter?: Smooth, with a nice glass of milk.
Type of car she drives: I don’t know. Something useful, but would blend in. Mm, maybe a bike?
Lefty or righty?: Righty. Though maybe I should learn to use my left more, it’d be so useful.
Favorite color: Light purple, lavender.
Cusser?: I learned a lot of Japanese ones from Bakagou.
Smoker? Drinker? Drug user?: I do have an antidepressant subscription, but nothing really beyond that.
Biggest regret: ...I really wasn’t in a good place before I met Izuku. I just regret how much I worried Sophia and Flint at the time.
Pets?: Don’t have one. Wouldn’t mind a cat.

Books I read in 2018
* = Re-read Check out past years: 2012, 2013 (skipped), 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. Follow me on Goodreads to get these reviews as they happen. 1) You Are Not a Gadget by Jaron Lanier 2) Binti by Nnedi Okorafor 3) Veins of the Earth by Patrick Stewart 4) McGlue by Ottessa Moshfegh The ending is clear almost from the first page, but you keep reading anyway*. Great stuff. *It's almost as if there is MORE to enjoying a story than being surprised by the ending???? 5) They Shoot Horses, Don't They? by Horace McCoy Ah yes, the violent and bloody underbelly of....the marathon dance craze??? Marathons that last upward of a MONTH??? Incredulity, if nothing else, keeps you reading right to the end. 6) What Editors Do: The Art, Craft, and Business of Book Editing by Peter Ginna I've no interest in becoming an editor, but as an author I figured there'd be some useful stuff in here. From that perspective I'll say this - writers, even ones who only want to self-publish, would do well to breeze through this to get a better understanding of a process they've been through or want to go through, but also a better understanding of the editors themselves. 7) Taran Wanderer by Lloyd Alexander 8) The High King by Lloyd Alexander 9) The Foundling and Other Tales of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander 10) The Largesse of the Sea Maiden: Stories by Denis Johnson 11) Landmarks by Robert MacFarlane Beautiful stuff, and a great reminder of all sorts of precious sensations to be found out in the world or in your childhood memories. 12) Vacationland: True Stories from Painful Beaches by John Hodgeman I like John Hodgeman in general, but honestly haven't dug any of his books of false facts or the stand-up routines centered around such things. That stuff just feels like someone scatting nonsense (Blood tornado! Deranged millionaire! DOG STORM! Yeah!) to the tune of a particular vibe (the doodles in the margins of your high school notebooks). But it's clear the guy can be a consummate storyteller and so I happily picked up this book of his ostensibly true tales. It's charming, funny, and sincere. Huzzah! I look forward to whatever comes next from Hodge Man. 13) The World of Late Antiquity 150-750 by Peter R.L. Brown 14) The Book of Joan by Lidia Yuknavitch 15) The Luzhin Defense by Vladimir Nabokov, Michael Scammell (Translator) 16) The Only Harmless Great Thing by Brooke Bolander 17) Blindsight by Peter Watts 18) Killing Gravity by Corey J. White 19) How to Thrive in the Next Economy: Designing Tomorrow's World Today by John Thackara 20) Echopraxia by Peter Watts 21) The Colonel by Peter Watts 22) The Devil's Guide to Hollywood: The Screenwriter as God! by Joe Eszterhas It’s a big book of quotable notables intermixed with a guy who really wants you to know he slept with Sharon Stone. There’s some chuckles to be had, especially if you’re irritated by Robert McKee, but let’s just say I’m glad I got this half-off from a used book store. 23) The River of Consciousness by Oliver Sacks Writers of fiction would do well to read this. 24) Asking for It: The Alarming Rise of Rape Culture and What We Can Do about It by Kate Harding *25) The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut 26) Red Clocks by Leni Zumas A reminder that dystopian tales don’t have to be cranked to eleven, and are often much more effective that way. 27) Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG by Goodman Games I don’t normally include RPG books in this list, but at about 450 pages I reckon this one earns a spot. I had a lot of thoughts about it, which you can read here. 28) Thongor and the Wizard of Lemuria by Lin Carter Look man, either you want to read a Conan rip-off where a convenient flying ship pulls our hero out of trouble at Just. The. Right. Time. or you don't. Nothing I say here will change that. I dipped into this soon after discovering the infamous Appendix N reading list. 29) Dear Life by Alice Munro 30) A Cabinet of Byzantine Curiosities: Strange Tales and Surprising Facts from History's Most Orthodox Empire by Anthony Kaldellis 31) Climate Leviathan: A Political Theory of Our Planetary Future by Joel Wainwright and Geoff Mann 32) Writing the Pilot: Creating the Series by William Rabkin 33) Ways of Seeing by John Berger If you've already done some university level art studies you may find most of this old hat.But if you haven't? It's a great primer, and I strongly recommend it. Heck, I wish I'd had it put in front of me in high school. 34) Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado 35) A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah 36) Polyamorous Love Song by Jacob Wren This book came out a few years ago. Just a few days ago I found it on the dollar shelf at a great used book and record shop in Montreal (Cheap Thrills). I never bother with stuff from the dollar shelf because it's usually about as good as the price suggests. But. The title & cover grabbed my eye. Then I stood and read the entire first chapter, not because I needed that much to erode any skepticism but because it gripped me. Your mileage may - nay, will - vary, of course. For me, the contents of this book were exactly what I needed. It might be what you need too, especially if you are someone who creates any kind of art and is struggling with it in the face of an increasingly rabid world. 37) Feel Free: Essays by Zadie Smith 38) Revenge Fantasies of the Politically Dispossessed by Jacob Wren 39) Rich and Poor by Jacob Wren 40) Homesick for Another World by Ottessa Moshfegh 41) Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh 42) Room to Dream by David Lynch, Kristine McKenna A great book whose format of a conversation between biography and autobiography really works! Both halves strangle the "lone genius" bullshit almost right out of the gate and, especially in Lynch's chapters, there's some kind of amusing punchline at the end of every other paragraph. An excellent read that is enjoyable even if you haven't seen every minute of his creative output. 43) Warrior of World's End by Lin Carter This book contains a sentient metal bird called a "Bazonga" and a chapter called "Flight of the Bazonga", to give you an idea. It's fun and dumb and yes. 44) Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler 45) Twelve Tomorrows by Wade Roush (Editor) *46) A Burglar's Guide to the City by Geoff Manaugh 47) The Dying Earth by Jack Vance I was going to write my own review but then I saw BIll's here and it's just so much better than what I was going to say, as well as echoing much of my own thinking. 48) Dune by Frank Herbert It is Dune. 49) Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison This book does not in fact contain the famous twist from the film. That changes a lot, an awful lot. Frankly it evokes, read now, climate change at least as much if not more than overpopulation. I'm not sure if I'd recommend reading it, frankly, though not for any lack of talent on Harry Harrison's part. 50) Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell 51) Silver Screen Fiend: Learning About Life from an Addiction to Film by Patton Oswalt 52) The Chapo Guide to Revolution: A Manifesto Against Logic, Facts, and Reason by Chapo Trap House *53) Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut Though it gifts us a few of his best quotes, such as “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”, I feel like Mother Night is only necessary reading for completionists. It often feels like a short story filled out to novel length, and lacks any of the fantastic or meta-textual elements of his other works. 54) Dungeons and Dragons Art and Arcana: A Visual History by Kyle Newman, Jon Peterson, Michael Witwer, Sam Witwer STATS Non-Fiction: 20 Fiction: 34 Poetry Collections:0 Comic Trades: 0 Wrote Myself: 0

It’s that time of the month again! Today I’ll be sharing how I’m doing with my New Years Resolutions. I honestly feel a bit reluctant to share my resolution check up for February because I feel like not much has happened but the whole point of this blog set is to keep myself accountable and continue to reach for my goals regardless of setbacks so here we go!
My 2017 New Years Resolutions
Lose 15 Pounds
Do A Running Event
Pass JLPT N3 & Start Studying for N2 –> Change to 30 minutes of daily study for the month of March
Blog at least 3 times a month –> Change to blog at least 7 times a month
Vlog at Least Once a Month
Make a Few Aronzi Aronzo Plushies from Book –> Change to make at least 2 new plushies a month with at least one new pattern
Use All Old Beauty Supplies Before Buying New Ones
Re-Pick Up Journalling Daily
Practice Yoga –> Change to 30 Days of Yoga with Adriene
So compared to how much I hustled in January, literally nothing has changed in regards to checking things off my list except one of my monthly goals and actually, I went backwards with with on my goals. Let me go a bit deeper into how I did with each goal for the month of February.
Weight Loss
I feel like I’m just at a standstill with this goal which is extremely disappointing. One day I get all pumped to track my food with MyFitnessPal but then that same day I get ravenously hungry and eat everything in sight. I have a feeling it has to do with the mentality that I’m going on a “diet” or restricting my intake which makes me want to eat more and more. I know I should re-read “Intuitive Eating” to work with this food issue I have because I KNOW it’ll help but it was just so boring the first time I read it and I couldn’t finish it. Maybe an audio book would help?
If you’ve been keeping up with my blog, you’ll know I’m in the midst of a 4 Week Shopping Fast and I had hoped that cutting out buying any sort of snack or candy will help me with my eating but so far the restricting of buying snacks has done the opposite! I’ve literally eaten almost every snack I have stockpiled in my house in aims to “get rid of them so I wont eat them later” but obviously this isn’t doing much for my weight loss and I’m probably just gaining weight!. Another issue I’m facing is that because I can only eat snacks and treats I’ve made myself…I’m baking and making my snacks all the time! Which sure is a bit healthier but I have already made two batches of brownies and a thousand batches of croutons to snack on and it’s only Day 5 of the shopping fast…! I feel like in terms of my eating habits I’ve barely changed much in February. Or possibly gotten worse? I know it because I feel incredibly guilty about it and I hate this guilt that I feel collecting at the pit of my stomach. I know what I need to do to make better changes but I guess I’m afraid of the change and afraid of taking the plunge. Afraid to move out of this comfortable routine I have with eating. I may even be afraid of how I’ll look once I actually do lose the weight. That’s hard to own up to but I think I need to take hold of the fear and learn to be friends with it in order to really tackle this eating issue. I think the only way to work on my weight loss goal is to make mini goals for myself for the month of March so here are a few I have in mind..
-Try and track but maybe not on MyFitnessPal. Just log in a journal so you can see what food reacts badly with your body so you can make better changes in terms of feeling better (and not bloated / gross).
-Eat more fruit instead of baked goods…get creative with said fruit
-Continue to meal plan and stop being bored with eating the same thing because it only makes me more frustrated. I hate that I get so bored with food..I’m not sure how else to fix this though.
-Make healthy decisions when eating out and stop when you’re full.
Exercise: Running Event & Yoga
Actually with this goal, I’ve made some headway. Bae, bestie Rachael and I signed up for the Nihondaira Sakura 10k on April 2nd! I’m super excited but also nervous. I haven’t been running as consistently as I was last month since I had a bad case of shin splints at the end of January and beginning of February buuut I am trying my best and the last few runs I’ve gone on I felt great so I’m hoping that I’ll be trained up enough to at least finish the 10k (even if it’s not within the time limit haha). As for other exercise like yoga, I have been going nowhere. I think it’s because I just am not motivated and extremely lazy right now. ITS SO COLD! The goal: “Practice Yoga” is also super vague so I think I need to narrow it down a bit and trim off the fat. So, I’m planning on just trying to do 30 days of yoga straight with the famous Adriene (check out her channel linked above). I’ve done this challenge before but only made it to 12 days. I’m hoping to do the full 30 and see where and how I feel from there. Narrowing this goal down makes me feel like it’ll be easier to accomplish if I’m given a time limit.
(Update: I just realized I set the goal to do 30 days of yoga with Adriene last month but didn’t end up doing it….so that kinda sucks but it motivates me more to actually do it in March..whoops)
Study
I’ve been keeping it pretty consistent with my weekly study sessions with my fellow ALTS so I hope to continue to make every session for the month. I also hope to try and study a bit more at work instead of just reading books, blogging, and doodling around. I feel like I have so much time to study right now since I don’t plan on taking N2 for another year or so but I know that every minute and hour adds up so I should focus on trying to study a little every day. So for March I want to log 3o minutes of daily study either on flashcard apps, study books, or maybe just a full conversation in Japanese with my friends.
Creative Endeavors
This is one goal that I’m actually proud to say I’ve done really well on in the month of February. I’ve gotten so much better from where I was before! I’ve made three handmade plushies in the month of February and also started on a new pattern. I’m thinking of making my own pattern and trying out some original designs (possibly making a Pokemon plushie? Cough cough maybe even a Snorlax?) but I also hope to keep working from the book I’ve been using. Since I’ve been doing so well with this goal, I wanted to up the ante and so I’ve changed my goal from “Make a few Aronzi Aronzo plushies from book” to “Make at least 2 plushies a month with one new pattern (or more)”. Here are the two plushies I’m most proud of from this past month:
The bear’s mouth piece is a bit crooked but other than that the two look great! I actually made the bunny last night so technically it wasn’t in February but whatevs.
Blogging and Vlogging
Another goal I’ve done quite well on this past month. I think I made this goal a bit too easy so I’ve changed it to blog at least 7 times a month to make it a bit more challenging. I think what’s helped me with keeping this goal in track is the fact that I have a journal and calendar just for blogging to write down any ideas I have for future posts and when I want to post them. In the month of February I’ve posted 9 blog posts which is pretty darn good! As for vlogging, I didn’t get around to making anything and I feel like part of it is because I don’t really have great lighting at home when I am actually free (after work) and the only day I could possibly vlog with good lighting is on a Sunday and I just haven’t had any good ideas or I’ve just been busy doing something else.
Anything ya’ll want to see in vlog form about Japan or just life in general? Please leave a comment below. I’m really desperate for ideas.
Journalling & Finishing Beauty Supplies
So I didn’t journal at all in the month of February. I know the reason and it’s going to sound super stupid but I hate how my journal looks. I’m really particular about how things look and my journal is uuugly! I think the only way I’ll be able to journal is to buy a new one or leave my journal at school so I can write when I know I have time. Plus it’ll be within hands reach so I am much more likely to reach for it when I have some free time on my hands. Since I’m in my shopping fast, there’s no reason to buy a new journal so I think I’ll bring it to school log daily and hope I can just finish it up so I can buy a new one in the next month or so. As for beauty supplies, I’ve finished up quite a few things (Clinique Moisture Surge, Ros Argan Body Conditioner, Clinique Spot Corrector, hand cream, toothe paste, various sheet masks, Glossier’s Bounce..) and it feels nice to finally be using up everything before buying new ones. I ran out of my eyebrow pencil today though, so I may have to cheat on the shopping fast and buy myself a new one because I can’t go a day without my awesome brows.
So I feel like this month’s check up was more about me owning up to the fact that I got REALLY lazy. I’m honestly proud of myself that I’m actually writing about my failures though. It’s a step in the right direction. I’m now motivated more than ever to accomplish the goals I’ve set out for myself in March! Thanks for reading! <3
