YES YOU GET IT!!!! i absolutely love how he´s not too mature, he´s 100% undeniably a teenager, but he´s always looking out for the twins, MAJOR protective big brother vibes frfr <3!!!! his dynamic with quintin is very clearly sibling vibes, and he was pretty adamant about *not* dating jackie, so theres hope, but its a tad early to really tell where this is going *shrug*

personally rooting for him and victoria on the basis that it´d be funny and they give off opposite vibes hehe (tho that would take a *heck* ton of character development to function lmao)

Just gonna start off saying Lent isn't just a Catholic thing. There are Protestants and I believe other denominations who also practice (although for non-Catholics, it's usually an individual decision, not the entire church).

Lent is how we prepare for the coming Christ on Easter. You choose one or two things, or maybe more if you're feeling ambitious, to either abstain from or try to do better. For example, I've given up social media, and I'm trying to be more generous and generally kinder with my siblings. Some other common ones are not listening to secular music, or adding extra prayer to your schedule. Or it can be something not inherently relegious, like chocolate or screens, or, like me, social media. It can be anything that requires a bit of sacrifice and/or self restraint.

Sundays and other solemnities (especially important days in the church) are days of rest, so you don't have to fast from whatever you've given up on those days, although some people might choose to. I believe another aspect to it is not eating meat on Fridays in Lent, but my family does that year round, so I'm not entirely sure.

So basically, all this is meant to help cleanse our souls before Easter, as it's the most important day of the year for Christians (but you probably knew that). It ends on Easter morning, 12 am technically, or at the end of mass if you attend the Easter vigil mass the night before. So yeah, it just helps us to get ourselves in order, so that we're ready for the coming of the Lord :)

Have you listened to the Prancing Pony Podcast episode listed in your pinned post about racism in Tolkien, and if so, would you mind sharing your thoughts on it?

I have and well I do have some thoughts on it! 

I think this is also a good time to clarify that the purpose of my pinned post was to compile as many resources on the topic of race and racism in Tolkien regardless of their content to allow people to form their own opinions.

It’s going to be a bit of a long one, but I think it’s important for me to voice some of my opinions as that particular episode highlights some of the main problems I have when the Tolkien fandom engages in discussions of race/racism. 

Overall, I think the episode is fine. It does a good job at covering some of the superficial aspects of race in Tolkien.

I’m going to be very careful with my wording here as it’s my belief that as many people as possible should be engaging with conversations on intersectionality in Tolkien as possible, especially on the topic of race and racism, and if those people have a large platform like the PPP.

This is not meant to target PPP specifically, however I think that there are certain attitudes expressed in that episode which I think don’t necessarily foster open and honest dialogue. 

I think it’s also important to note that this episode was aired two years ago, and since then the opinions of the creators may have changed. 

This is the one thing I will say without getting too in depth with some of the points discussed in the episode as it could take several essays to address and deconstruct: 

It is not the place of white fans to decide whether or not Tolkien was/is not racist.

It’s been a recurring theme over the years in which some fans (particularly non-white fans) want to bring up to the topic of race and racism in Tolkien and they get met with various iterations of the statement “Tolkien was a man of his time!” or “Tolkien hated n-zis!” 

Both of those statements can be considered superficially true, and that’s exactly why it’s so frustrating trying to argue more nuanced points, especially coming from places of lived experience. I can’t count how many times I’ve tried to talk about how hurtful the racially charged descriptions of the orcs were, only to be met with “well Tolkien didn’t mean that!” or, “Tolkien hated racism!” 

This attitude not only shuts down potential nuanced dialogue, but it feeds into the vicious cycle of derailing from the wider conversation of race and racism from perspectives that live with the implications of race and racism reflected in Tolkien. It takes away the agency of those who should be at the centre of discussions of race.

I also think it’s incredibly troubling that the default interpretation of Tolkien is white/Eurocentric with the only exception being the villains, and this is certainly something I’ve seen echoed on some white supremacist forums I’ve been investigating.

Moreover, it’s embarrassing. 

It’s embarrassing that the wider fandom at large still cannot reckon with the racist imagery perpetuated in Tolkien’s works and communities when white nationalists have been deriving inspiration from Tolkien since the 70s and continue to do so to this day. 

It doesn’t help that the more prominent, organised spaces in Tolkien fandom are not doing enough to condemn and combat white supremacist ideology in Tolkien fandom and communities, and this in turn can act as a deterrent for diverse perspectives, thus perpetuating the vicious cycle of silencing and harassment. 

I am critical of Tolkien because I love Arda. 

It is no longer good enough to simply argue that Tolkien is/was not a racist, but to consider the very real implications of his works regardless of the opinions he may have held as a man. 

Do you really think that those white supremacists on S--rmfront really care that Tolkien was horrified by "the treatment of colour” in Letter 61, or the wrongful appropriation of the “noble northern spirit?” in Letter 45 by the n-zis, and then later completely backtracking on the term “Nordic” in Letter 294? Of course not. 

The Prancing Pony Podcast actually published this tweet calling for more people of “diverse racial backgrounds” to participate in their podcast which hints at the aftermath of “My Statement of Tolkien 2019″ which I can confidently say has shaken several Tolkien communities to their cores.

I think the Tolkien fandom at large is generally seeing some shifts in attitude, however only time will tell how long we can keep this momentum up and see if any systemic change actually results from this resurrected dialogue on race and representation.

I'VE BEEN BINGING SPACE BOY FOR LIKE HALF AN HOUR AND IVE TEARED UP SO MANY TIMES BUT AS SOON AS AMY WENT AHEAD AND CALLED JEMMAH I STARTED BAWLING MY EYES OUT

anyway tysm for recommending this to me, this is the first piece of media I've actually like... really really connected with (my parents are planning on moving our family across the country), and I honestly think I really needed it. I love it so much.

Highlights so far:

-I really like that there's no mean characters. I keep waiting for a bully or smth but everyone she meets genuinely has her best interests at heart. It's honestly so refreshing

-The fact that Cassie didn't immediately get suspicious and defensive and overprotective when she saw David hanging out with a new girl was again, super refreshing compared the all the One Chicago I watch lmao. i love it but im so tired of the overreactions

-Oliver's notes are so cute, and the way he cherished her little doodle on his hand and copied and put it in the notes 🥺🥺🥺

Also aaaaaaaaaaa Amy and Oliver, they make me so ill 😭❤!!! I'm usually mild about shipping but not with these 2 adshsgsgwhsgwgdg, I think it's bc instead of going 'hey don't these 2 look pretty together? 🙂', the author fleshed them out as individuals and had them establish an actual friendship, so the audience ships them but the story itself takes it's time building up to that :') <3<3<3

Secondly, I feel silly for asking this & am not sure if you or followers would know— but are there any recommendations for Tolkien meme groups that do not allow racist/alt-right banter on fb? I’d like to laugh at Silmarillion puns without a random racist tossing in their rubbish, especially from admins.

Hello there! Unfortunately I would have to say that racist/alt-right banter of any sort is the norm in Tolkien Facebook groups due to implicit or explicit bias in addition to lack of proper moderation by admins. 

[edit: person will make a throwaway] is writing a statement at the moment on her own experiences as an ex-admin on a popular Tolkien Facebook group which explains a lot with regards to some of the nastiness and bigotry you can find in these groups. 

If you search up “salmon riot” on Tumblr you can find some fairly safe and good natured Silmarillion memes. I must admit I haven’t been the most active on the tumblr fandom, but if anyone else is aware of some Silmarillion meme blogs/tags please feel free to add! 

It’s not silly at all -- I love Silmarillion memes! They’re so oddly specific and there’s certainly a strong meme culture in the fandom. We can’t always be mourning the deaths of our faves you know.
