How a 1970s "lost" Marvel Comic still takes Beatles fans on a magical mystery tour
How a 1970s “lost” Marvel Comic still takes Beatles fans on a magical mystery tour
Back in 1978, musicians Peter Frampton, the Bee-Gees and actor George Burns starred in a film adaptation of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was a box office disaster, and in the fall out, a Marvel Comics adaptation for the North American market was canned. But editions were published elsewhere, and are, today, perhaps some of the rarest The Beatles comics memorabilia out…

Home For the Holidays - Travis Konecny
requested: y/n
word count: 1262
warnings: none
You couldn’t help the grin that made its way onto your face as you and Travis got out of the car after what seemed like forever. You two had flown up to West Elgin to spend Christmas with Travis’ family, a tradition the two of you had taken up on since you first started dating. Thanksgiving was with your family and Christmas was with his.
You walk up to the front door of the familiar house hand in hand with Travis. You had a little pep in your step; you always loved seeing the Konecny’s. Rob and Terri treated you like the daughter they never had and you were the little sister Chase never had. Everything seemed like puzzle pieces, small parts perfectly put together to see the full picture And boy was it beautiful. You couldn’t possibly be happier.
Trav pushed open the front door and instantly Terri was making a bee line for you two. “Oh, Y/N!” She exclaimed and wrapped her arms around you. “It’s been so long, my dear. How have you been? How’s the city?” She pulled back from the hug to smile at you, which you gratefully returned.
Travis fake scoffed from beside you. “Gee, thanks mom,” He spoke jokingly. Terri gave you a dramatic look before turning to hug her son. “That’s alright, I know Y/N’s more important.”
You ignore Travis and walk into the living room with Terri. “I’ve been good, the city has been as amazing as ever, and so is grumpy pants,” You gesture towards Travis who’s talking to his father.
“You know how he gets on long trips,” Terri said and you nodded. You’d been doing this trip enough to know that Travis was very grumpy after a long car ride. You had flown into Toronto which was an hour and a half flight, and then drove to West Elgin which was a 2 and a half hour ride. Usually he was a happy spirit, but not after having to sit for so long.
You greet Chase and Rob with hugs before you and Travis go to grab your bags and suitcases from the rental car. “You know I love you, right?” Travis asks, glancing back at you briefly as he takes your suitcase, setting it on the lightly coated of snow driveway.
Your eyebrows furrow. “Of course, T, and I love you too. What’s wrong?” You ask and he shakes his head. “Travis,” You sigh and move in front of him, leaning back into the car and cupping his face in your hands. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong,” He giggles lightly and reciprocates your movement, his hands going up to cup your own cheeks. “I promise I would tell you, and you know that. I just figured I’d let you know.”
“Okay,” You breathe out and Travis leans down slowly, pressing his cold lips to yours. He pulls away slowly and doesn’t say a word, his thumb brushing over your cheek.
Eventually the two of you make it inside the warm house, dropping your bags off in Travis’ childhood room that was decked out in hockey memorabilia he had gathered throughout the years. Most of it being his own. His room always felt so homey, and maybe it was because you two had been together so long, or maybe it was because hockey had become a big part of your own life as well. Whatever it was, you loved it.
You guys had your own little traditions for Christmas Eve that had accumulated over the years. You and Terri would make hot chocolate and cookies, then you girls and the boys would watch a Christmas movie or two. So that was exactly what you were doing now. You rolled little dough balls before placing them on the wax sheet, and once those were finished you and Terri made the hot chocolate. Meanwhile the boys were setting up the movie and grabbing blankets and pillows.
After everything is finally ready, you and Terri carefully bring the hot chocolate out into the living room where the title screen to The Polar Express is on the TV. You sit down next to Travis, curling up next to him and then he wraps his arm around your shoulder. With a little kiss to your forehead you grin to yourself. Time passes all too fast, and soon enough you’re yawning and so is Travis. You head up to his room.
“Who’s coming tomorrow?” You ask Trav as both of you change into your pajamas.
“The usual,” He responds and you curl up next to him, placing your head on his bare chest. You grab his hand intertwining your fingers and he kisses your forehead lightly. “Love you.” He mumbles.
“Love you too, bud,” You mumble and then you drift off to sleep.
The next time you wake up it’s because of Travis. He’s lightly pressing kisses along the side of your neck, and your eyes flutter open.
“Good morning love,” You grin up at him. “Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, gorgeous,” Travis breathes out with a smile. He presses one last kiss to your neck before crawling off you and offering you a hand. You grab his hand but you pull him back down in the bed with you.
“Few more minutes,” You mumble and he sighs but obliges nonetheless. You aimlessly run your hand up and down his chest and he sighs contently, but it doesn’t last as long as you wish it would.
“Nope, we gotta get up hon,” Travis stated and escaped your hold. He pulled you up to your feet and finally you followed him downstairs. Terri had already prepared a pot of coffee for you and her, Rob was setting up the fire, and Chase was right behind you and Travis. He had just woken up as well.
After exchanging good morning’s and Merry Christmases, you all sit down at the couch to open up presents. You and Terri had teamed up to get the boys some new hunting gear, which was a little conjoined present for the three of them. Terri and Rob had gotten you an expensive looking charm bracelet, with a few little charms that defined you. One even including a hockey stick and skate.
Now, Travis was a tough one to shop for. He could buy anything he wanted with a single paycheck. So what did you do? You went more sentimental. You bought him another cross necklace since he accidentally broke his other one, a few new ties, and a few other little things. Travis knew about the bracelet his parents got you and got a charm of his own for it: a heart tying into a knot that wasn’t full pulled together yet. He also got you a dainty necklace.
“Wait, there’s one more present under the tree,” Rob grinned. Travis got up to go grab the present, read the name on it, and then handed it to you.
“It’s yours,” Travis smiled and you hesitantly took the small present from him. You opened it up slowly, revealing a small velvet box. Instantly your heart began to hammer in your chest and you gave Travis a look. “Open it,” He urged on.
You did so, and inside there was a beautiful diamond ring. Travis grabbed the box from your hands and got down onto one knee.
“Will you marry me, Y/N?” He asked quietly, but you heard him nonetheless. How through the sound of your heart beating so fast, you don’t know, but you heard him.
“Yes, yes, of course,” You manage to muster out and with a semi shaky hand Travis slides the ring onto your finger.

Here’s what went down on this date in music history
March 31st
1949 - RCA Victor
RCA Victor introduced the 45rpm single record, which had been in development since 1940. The 7-inch disc was designed to compete with the Long Playing record introduced by Columbia a year earlier. Both formats offered better fidelity and longer playing time than the 78rpm record that was currently in use. Advertisements for new record players boasted that with 45rpm records, the listener could hear up to ten records with speedy, silent, hardly noticeable changes.
1957 - Elvis Presley
Billed as the nation's only atomic powered singer, Elvis Presley played two shows (2pm and 6pm), at the Olympia in Detroit, Michigan in front of 24,000 fans.
1958 - Chuck Berry
Chuck Berry's rock 'n' roll classic 'Johnny B. Goode' single was released. It entered the US charts six weeks later and peaked at No.8 on the chart. The song's original lyrics referred to Johnny as a 'colored boy', but Berry later acknowledged that he changed it to 'country boy' to ensure radio play.
1962 - The Beatles
The Beatles played their first gig in the South of England when they appeared at The Subscription Rooms, Stroud, on the same bill as The Rebel Rousers, tickets cost 5 shillings, ($0.70).
1964 - The Beatles
Filming for A Hard Day's Night, The Beatles played a 'live television performance' in front of a studio of screaming fans (one of those fans was Phil Collins). The four songs used in the film were ‘Tell Me Why’, ‘I Should Have Known Better’, ‘And I Love Her’, and ‘She Loves You’.
1967 - Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix set fire to his guitar live on stage for the first time when he was appearing at The Astoria in London, England. It was the first night of a 24-date tour with The Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens and Engelbert Humperdink. The Fender Stratocaster burned on stage by Hendrix sold for £280,000 at a 2008 London auction of rock memorabilia.
1972 - The Beatles
The Beatles Official Fan Club closed. The Beatles Monthly magazine had ceased three years previously.
1976 - Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin released Presence, their seventh studio album, on their own Swan Song Records in the UK. Presence has now been certified 3 times Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for US sales in excess of 3 million copies.
1984 - Kenny Loggins
Kenny Loggins started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Footloose', the theme from the film with the same name, a No.6 hit in the UK.
1992 - Def Leppard
Def Leppard released their fifth studio album Adrenalize, the first by the band following the 1991 death of guitarist Steve Clark. Former Dio and Whitesnake guitarist Vivian Campbell, was brought in as the newest member in April 1992. He appears in all promotional videos for the album's singles (except 'Let's Get Rocked'), despite not playing on the album.
1995 - Jimmy Page
Jimmy Page escaped being knifed when a fan rushed the stage at a Page and Plant gig at Auburn Hills, Michigan. The fan was stopped by two security guards, who he knifes instead. After his arrest, he told police that he wanted to kill Jimmy Page because of the Satanic music he was playing.
2002 - Barry Gibb
Bee Gee Barry Gibb bought his childhood home in Keppel Road, Chorlton, Manchester. Gibb said he was going to clean the house up, rent it out and put a plaque on the wall.
2010 - Cher
Cher's first child, Chaz Bono, asked a judge to formally change his name and gender following the sex change surgery he had last year. The 41-year-old, who was born Chastity Sun Bono, now wanted to be known as Chaz Salvatore according to a petition filed in Los Angeles. Salvatore was his father Sonny Bono's real first name.
2011 - Men at Work
Australian band Men at Work lost an appeal against a ruling which found their 1983 hit single 'Down Under' was partly copied from a folk song. Australia's Federal Court upheld the decision which stated part of the song's melody came from the tune Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree. Record label EMI argued the writers did not plagiarise because the inclusion of two bars from the tune was a tribute.
2015 - Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchell was rushed to hospital after being found unconscious at her Los Angeles home. The singer songwriter was admitted to intensive care where she underwent tests. Los Angeles fire officials said paramedics had answered a 911 call in Bel Air, where Mitchell lives, and had taken a patient whom they did not identify to hospital.

-----
Agonized screams echoed in the abandoned warehouse. The man strapped down on the silver table repeatedly shouts for his release or even help. Cold sweat forms into bead-like on his forehead as he tried to unclasp one of the restraints.
"No one would hear you, my dear Rae Chaser." A female voice said, startling him. It gave him chills as the voice sounded familiar to him.
"W-Who are you?" He asked, fear evident in his voice.
"I hope you remember this line." The female speaker said, clearing her throat. "Hey, do you know what her kinky hair resembles? I don't know man, it looks like pubic hair." She laughed as she tried to immitate two boys talking to each other.
Rae froze, his mind reeling into different people he met. She stepped into the light, a fake smile plastered on her lips.
"Don't you remember me?" A smirk crept on her lips, watching Rae's face shook with horror.
"Y/N L/N!" He shouted. "What are you going to do?"
"You don't know what I have in mind, but I know what I have for I can perform any surgery anytime, anywhere." She said, scooting over the silver table and brushing his hair with her fingertips. "Do you wanna know?"
"I don't care what you are going to do! I will get out of this place and tell the cops what you're doing!" He barked at her.
She chuckled, fishing something from her pockets. "I hope these remind you of them." She held a zip bag and inside were: a used brace bracket and a pair of pearl earrings.
"You're behind their death?" The hostage shrieked in fear.
"Duh. Do you think I'll able to get Nicc's brace bracket if I wasn't behind their deaths? I just took Risha's earrings because they look nice." She plastered another fake and creepy smile.
Rae was about to say something when she was stopped by Y/N's gloved hand on his mouth. "You know, I am really annoyed by you, asking me non-sensical questions."
Tears flowed from his eyes, probably using them to ask for mercy.
"You know..." The sound of a duct tape being undone was heard. "We would be in good terms if you've gone silent." She placed the tape on his lips. A chuckle escaped her lips as she produced a syringe from her pockets. "Thank you and good night, Rae Chaser."
Ticking the cap off, she pushed it on his arm. Rae seemed to be fighting the dose she gave.
"Don't worry darling. You'll be able to save lives after I took your organs away and donate them to those who are in need." Then, as if on cue, Rae's eyes shut close.
-----
Panic! at the Disco's Death of a Bachelor was playing repeatedly as she carefully analyze his eyes, liver, kidney, heart and brain. Blood stains are visible on her surgical gloves, as well on her scrubs.
After taking some of his vital organs, she also took blood and was planning to donate it to bloodbanks.
Moments later, as she was testing a blood sample (for blood type), the bluetooth speakers stopped playing her song as Bee Gee's Stayin' Alive started.
"Jim Moriarty," she murmured, not diverting her gaze from the microscope.
"How's everything going, babe?" He asked, standing next to her, probably disgusted by the gory stuff displayed on her table. "And by the way, you have a poor choice in music."
"I'm doing well." She replied, sounding a little bit pissed.
"I'm just kidding. Just wanna spend time with my surgeon-slash-serial killer girlfriend since she's busy on helping other people in need and killing those who--how do you describe them?" Jim said.
"I don't know...I just found that I crossed out their faces before on my high school memorabilia." She replied.
"So you don't like them?"
"Yeah, I don't. They kinda pissed me off before." Jim shrugged, watching her as she labeled the blood bags with B+. "Can I ask something, James?"
"Anything for my lady," he said, snaking an arm on her waist.
"I liked this guy, back in high school--"
"Oh Y/N L/N had a crush before!" Jim shouted and laughed. You shook your head. "Go on, dear."
"And uh...it seemed that he doesn't like me. Kinda wanna teach him a lesson in the worst kind of way..." You said softly.
Jim kissed your cheek. "What the lady wants, the lady gets." He snapped and the silver doors burst open.
"I hope you still have the energy to do another one." He murmured against your lips. "I hope I got it right." He motioned to his men as they took off the sack on their hostage's head.
"Darryl Pearson, how nice to see you again after ten years." Y/N greeted, never leaving Jim's embrace.
"We'll take care of the mess." Jim whispered and bit her ear.
"Watch me having fun." She murmured, pecking on his lips.
"Did I get it right?"
"Yes...and spoiling me for my demands makes you the best boyfriend ever." She took off her blood stained gloves and wore a clean one while his men strapped the captive down on a sterile operating bed.
"Dear Darryl, did you know that I also specialize in cosmetic surgery?" She hummed, pressing tranquilizer on him.

Brass Tacts: REEEEEEEJECTED!
No one likes being told they’re not welcome, but rejection is a fact when it comes to broadcasting and content creation. This is a very competitive industry, and it’s hard to move up a level when you have hundreds of people applying for one open job. But even the biggest stars today had people tell them “no” over and over again. Here’s the story of one of my favorites...
I remember this happened in the 1996-97 school year, my sophomore year at the University of Alabama. I believe it was that winter when a mobile museum was making its way from one college campus to another. The exhibit was from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, which after several years of not having a physical building to call home finally opened in 1995. Several pieces of rock memorabilia were displayed in the student center, and as the cool alternative rock DJ at WVUA-FM, I was soaking up each piece.
But there was one piece that really caught my attention, something I would use as motivation a couple of years later when I was starting my rejection-filled search for a job. Among the guitars, drum heads, and outfits was a display showcasing a typewritten letter. The letter was on RSO Records letterhead, and it was a rejection letter addressed to a Paul Hewson of Dublin, Ireland.
Dated May 10, 1979, an Alexander Sinclair wrote Mr. Hewson that his band’s demo tape was received and listened to “with careful consideration”. Despite this, Sinclair and RSO decided the band’s demo “is not suitable for us at present”. The final sentence wished Mr. Hewson luck in his future career, a common but sometimes cold “don’t let the door hit you on the way out” comment. But if you look closely, you’ll see the name of the band Mr. Hewson was a part of-- a little Irish band that had been around for only 3 years named “U2″. You know Paul Hewson better as Bono.
Now put yourself in RSO’s (or Alexander Sinclair’s) shoes at the time. In 1978, RSO had #1 hit after #1 hit in the glory days of disco, with acts such as the Bee Gees and Andy Gibb as well as soundtracks to Saturday Night Fever and Grease cranking out thumping disco dance music. In the spring of 1979, U2 really didn’t fit the mold for RSO. But much like I have previously discussed how companies often get stuck in the now as opposed to the what’s next, this was clearly the case with RSO. Disco was about to go through a major backlash from rock fans, and much of the new wave of rock and roll was coming from Europe.
What RSO also didn’t know was Bono’s ambition. U2 had formed under the name Feedback in 1976, and very quickly became a favorite of Irish rock fans. A change of a name to U2, and a contract with CBS’s Irish subsidiary (won in a contest in 1978) was putting the band on the map. RSO and other labels failed to connect the dots. Their loss became Island Records’ gain in 1980, when the struggling label signed Mr. Hewson’s band. While the growing band didn’t fill Island’s coffers right off the bat, 39 years later U2 is still releasing albums on the Island/Interscope label. And every album U2 has made, including the legendary War, The Unforgettable Fire, and Joshua Tree have the Island Records stamp on it.
RSO’s name is stamped on a rejection letter, now featured in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Bono is a great example, but I’ve read the stories of other famous people who hindsight being 20/20 should have been given a chance much sooner than they did. You too (or is it U2?) will experience rejection often, but use it to fuel that fire to keep trying to get that first or next break, at the very least to show the naysayers they were wrong. When comic strip artist and creator Charles Schulz, who created Peanuts, was shopping his early work around he often got rejected and sometimes harshly. But as told in the biography Shulz and Peanuts by David Michaelis, each rejection made Schulz happy, because he knew he was getting closer to finally getting discovered.
Visit SammonSez.com to see how we can help you polish that resume and demo, hopefully getting fewer rejections along the way.
