Joetastic and Risley(two youtube content creators) also brough up a good point about when Jimmy was giving Curly his meds. It sounds like he got angry and started beating him in the audio. Which only further displays Jimmy's violent outbrakes, he was beating someone who couldn't physically fight back. This is clearly meant as a parallel between him and his treatment of Anya. Anya couldn't speak up for herself and had to deal with Jimmy making sexual jokes towards her in his phyc eval and constiantly berating her/putting her down. Anya pulled of a fucking MIRICLE by keeping curly alive with such limited supplies, not only that but she was pretty much his sole caretaker. She has to feed him, keep his wraps clean, keep him clean, give him is meds, and make sure he doesn't get bedsores/open up a wound that could literally kill him. If you've ever had a parent/grandparent in a nursing home you should have a faint idea of how absolutly draining this can be. On top of that she has to keep herself sane and put up with Jimmy and the crew.

The Scottish physician and inventor Neil Arnott was born on May 15th 1788.
Arnott, was born in the town of Arbroath, he  would become a very highly-regarded physician and show an inventiveness unusual for his era.
Misfortunes compelled the father, Alexander, to give up his farm and settle first at Blair and afterwards in Aberdeen. Neil was taught by his mother Ann, and at the parish school of Lunan, and in November 1798 entered Aberdeen grammar school. In 1801 he was entered as a student in the Marischal College, with a small bursary, where he remained during four sessions, and was especially interested by the lectures of Patrick Copland on natural philosophy. He graduated M.A. in 1805, and at once commenced the study of medicine in Aberdeen. He supported himself partly by acting as shop-assistant to a chemist.
By the age of 19 young Neil was a fully fledged surgeon and made two visits to China as surgeon for the British East India Company and then settled in London where his reputation would grow and grow.
He gave lectures at the Philomathic Institution and published these as Elements of physics. Arnott was one of the founders of the University of London, 1836. Within a few years he was made physician to the French and Spanish embassies, and in 1837 he became physician extraordinary to the Queen. He was elected to the Fellow of the Royal Society in 1838. He was a strong advocate of scientific, as opposed to purely classical, education.
Doctor Arnott gifted 2,000 pounds to each of the four universities of Scotland and to the University of London, to promote its study in the experimental and practical form.Of his inventions they included, a  Smokeless Fire-place, Chimney-valves, and “Other Means, Old and New of obtaining Healthful warmth and ventilation”  But is the final invention I find most interesting, he gave us the first form of waterbed. Dr Arnott’s Hydrostatic Bed, as it was known, had been created to help invalids avoid bedsores. A bath of water covered with rubber-impregnated canvas, and a lighter bedding on top, it worked a treat. The modest Arnott, however, didn’t choose to patent the idea, amazingly the waterbed was not actually patented until 1968 by an American furniture designer Charles Prior Hall, but oor Dr Arnott definitely came up with the idea first.
The water bed was first used in aid of medicine. In 1873, when Sir James Paget at St Bartholomew’s Hospital presented a waterbed designed by Arnott as a treatment and prevention of pressure ulcers (bed sores); a condition that was quite common in this era. Paget found that waterbeds allowed mattress pressure to be evenly distributed over the body. Unfortunately, this invention lacked the ability to regulate the temperature of the water.
And so we have another first from a Scot, the waterbed!
Neil Arnott died in London in 1874 but is buried with his mother in Dean Cemetery in Edinburgh.

We look on with horror - and rightly so - at the Canadian medical system's callous disregard for human life by basically offering euthanasia as an answer for everything.
The thing I don't think a lot of people realize is that, due to the upcoming demographic collapse, pretty soon this is probably going to be worldwide, and that this is almost inevitable.
The entire first world has an aging population without the birth numbers to replace it. That means that, in the not-too-distant future, there are going to be a lot more old people with failing health than there's going to be qualified caretakers for them.
I mean, that's already the case now. I had a job working in a nursing home / physical rehab facility for about six months (which was all I cared to do there), and it was me and two CNAs to 35 patients. And that's standard. There's plenty of places where the staffing ratios are even worse.
And the care in some of these places is atrocious. You'll hear horror stories about the state they find some people in in nursing homes, with no one having come to check on them for days as they lay helpless in bed, in their own piss and shit, bedsores down to the bone.
And that's with "professional" "medical" "care". Families aren't necessarily better; it's a lot harder to take care of a helpless adult than it is an infant, and despite attempts by family to take care of them, folks still wind up with bedsores and infections and all sorts of problems that do them in.
And if you've got no one then you're really fucked; or maybe less so, depending on how you look at it, because you might die quicker alone.
And it's not just nursing homes. People in need of more acute care are going to have less and less necessary time and attention spent on them as there's more and more of them and fewer and fewer people to care for them. Right now ICUs typically have a 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 ratio of nurses to patients. What happens when it becomes 1-to-6? What happens when the person in the ICU who needs to be tended to for 15 - 20 minutes of every hour is being looked after by someone who's got to split their time between 6 other patients? That person can't spend a third of an hour of individual care on six people at once; it's not physically possible.
"So just hire more help!" You understand that hiring doctors and nurses and other skilled medical staff isn't like hiring more people to stock the shelves at Target or work the register at Burger King, right? You need people with education and training and the ability to actually pass that education and training and the mindset that goes along with caring for people. And the more acute the care, the sharper that person has to be.
And my point is, even if it was that way, there's still going to be more old people in need of care than there's going to be people to care for them.
What's the staffing ratio going to be for nursing homes in 2050? One nurse to 80 patients? One to 100? Acute care units with one nurse to 20 patients - patients who are laid up in bed and can't get up and can't go to the bathroom and can't clean themselves and can't get their own food or water? Are we going to have ICUs with 1 nurse to 10 patients? At that point those won't be care facilities, they'll be warehouses for the dying.
And this is where euthanasia will be given as an answer. "We can't care for all of these people, who are simply dying slow deaths. The best we can do is make it quick and painless."
And it is a slippery slope. We can see it happening in Canada right now, how more and more people are being offered assisted suicide as the answer for what would be otherwise difficult or inconvenient medical issues.
My prediction is that by the year 2050 euthanasia will be a standard medical "treatment" for the elderly and anyone with chronic conditions.
And I legit don't have a good answer about that.

Does Ard. recognize he probably won't keep a thrall as long as Darius because the difference between their styles of keeping them? Sure, Malak is well fed/dressed/gets basic enrichment. There's nothing to keep his mind sharp, his muscles in shape, or even anything to keep him actually enriched. He has them be basically turned to babies.
Whereas Darius' thralls get SOME Of that...I think tempers aside his thralls would last longer before they perish. There are things to keep them kind of sharp mentally. Muscles do get worked. Just enrichment isn't a thing. But I think the need to serve is taking place. And Darius is a bossy thing with lots of demands orders...
idk I might feel different later but rn these are just my random musings. 🤔💭 And every thrall is different...really, we're fighting bedsores with blisters here. 😬 (Love all the ocs btw and the story!)
Very sorry but this does sort of irk me, Adrastus strictly goes by they/them pronouns. Thank you.
(Ramble under the cut lmao)
Yes you are completely right on this!! Adrastus has gone through several thralls, not only due to lack of care but their tendency to get bored very easily. Malak is by far their favorite out of all the thralls they’ve had!
I do plan to show this at some point (if I can get myself to write…) but Adrastus is also not the greatest at taking care of their thralls. They keep Malak fairly incapable of doing most things for himself, but will occasionally forget or get distracted from taking care of him with his needs. This includes things like forgetting to bathe or feed him, and so on.
It does sort of help once they move in with Nevan and Darius as Adrastus tends to push some of that responsibility to Nevan, (not all of it of course) and even if he hasn’t been instructed to help he will if he notices Malak needs something.
I can’t wait to show more of how this treatment affects Malak once they’re out… I want to write predominately captivity stuff first though 😭😭
And yes Darius’ thralls do tend to last longer!! He’s had less than Adrastus has and for multiple reasons, the first being what you’ve said above.
Darius has less of a fondness for the conditioning process than Adrastus does. Adrastus has a lot of fun with it, while he more-so wants to get it over with and just get an obedient servant as quickly as possible. This means he wants to preserve and hold the same thrall for as long as possible to avoid having to repeat the process.
One thing though is just that while his thralls last longer than Adrastus, he of course greatly takes looks into account. If he deems his thrall unfit and losing their attractiveness, he is quick to get rid of them :(
I’m glad you’re enjoying the story!! Very very glad :3 and I love the way you think… what you’ve said here is so right :D

I distinctly remember my grandfather's doctors trying to deny him painkillers at the ripe age of 81 when he had a bedsore on his back from poor hospital treatment. All because they were concerned he would "get addicted".
His PCP finally was able to get a hold of the doctors and basically tore them new assholes, saying, "okay, how about we put a hole in *your* ass, and then deny you pain medication. How do you think you'd be feeling?"
The pain pills he got made him more loopy than anything, but hey, the man was able to sleep at least.
I think people over seventy years old should have unrestricted access to prescription painkillers. Not to take home or anything (they might get sold or stolen, although frankly I think pain meds should be less regulated in general and the fact that such a market exists for that is a sign that they're over-restricted in the first place) but like, they should be able to show up at the hospital and flash their ID and be like "morphine please" and have a nurse shoot them up then and there. Yes this is about my stepfather who had every health problem and finally became a tolerable human being after he was put on constant pain management medication but also if you're over 70 you know how your own body works and what pain feels like and frankly if you throw away your life to a painkiller addiction at that age (way less rare than the media would have you think, most "abusers" of painkillers are self-medicating *to manage their pain that they're not being prescribed enough medication for*) then all the more power to you.

Home Care for Bedsores: Dressing Techniques for Faster Healing
Bedsores, or pressure ulcers, can develop due to prolonged pressure on the skin, often affecting individuals who are bedridden or have limited mobility. Proper dressing and wound care at home are essential to promote healing and prevent complications.
Clean the Wound Properly – Before applying any dressing, gently cleanse the bedsore with a saline solution or mild antiseptic to remove bacteria and debris. Use a sterile gauze pad to pat the area dry, ensuring there is no excess moisture that could delay healing.
Choose the Right Dressing – The type of dressing used depends on the severity of the wound. Hydrocolloid dressings help maintain moisture and promote healing, foam dressings absorb excess fluid, and alginate dressings are ideal for wounds with heavy drainage. Always follow medical advice on dressing selection.
Apply the Dressing Correctly – Ensure the wound is properly covered but not too tightly wrapped, as this can restrict blood flow. Use adhesive-free dressings if the skin is sensitive, and secure them in place with medical tape or bandages.
Reposition the Patient Regularly – Reducing pressure on the wound site is crucial for healing. Repositioning the patient every 2-3 hours helps prevent further pressure sores and promotes blood circulation. Special cushions or air mattresses can also help distribute weight evenly.
Maintain Skin Hygiene and Nutrition – Keeping the surrounding skin clean and dry prevents further breakdown. A healthy diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and fluids supports tissue repair and strengthens the immune system, aiding in faster recovery.
Why Choose Us
Professional Wound Care at Home – Our trained caregivers provide expert wound management, ensuring proper cleaning, dressing, and monitoring for better healing.
Customized Care Plans – We assess the patient’s condition and provide personalized treatment plans based on the severity of the bedsore and individual needs.
High-Quality Medical Dressings – We use advanced wound care products that promote faster healing, reduce pain, and minimize the risk of infection.

Steps to Follow in Wound Care: Debridement, Treatment and Healing at Home
A basic part of healthcare is wound care treatment. A serious burn can lead to some health problems and the right way to dress a wound can help a person get better. There are many step-by-step ways to treat burns. Apart from cleaning and bandaging, debridement is the process of getting rid of dead or damaged tissue. This is a difficult procedure and lowers the chance of getting an infection. Want to know more about wound care treatment? Read this article about different ways to treat wounds and special ways to take care of bedsores at home.
How to Safely Take Care of Wound Debridement
Wound Care Debridement is necessary to get rid of dead tissue, foreign objects and other debris. This helps a quick healing process. This minor procedure helps healthy tissue to grow and lowers the risk of infection. The method of debridement relies on the type of wound, the patient's health and the chance of complications.
Different Types of Cutting Wounds:
Autolytic Debridement: This method uses the body's enzymes and fluids to soften and get rid of dead tissue. Moisture-wicking bandages help the process along. It works best on cuts that aren't infected.
Biological Debridement: In this method, clean maggots are used to eat dead tissue and keep infections under control by releasing antibacterial substances. It works especially well on big wounds or wounds that are infected with germs that are resistant to antibiotics.
Enzymatic Debridement: This method uses ointments or gels with enzymes to soften damaged tissue, which makes it easier to remove. It is best for people who have trouble with bleeding or a high chance of problems after surgery.
Mechanical Debridement: This common way gets rid of dead tissue physically using wet-to-dry dressings, hydrotherapy, or monofilament debridement pads.
Sharp Debridement: In this method, surgical tools are used to cut away unhealthy tissue. Conservative sharp debridement is done at the patient's bedside, while surgical sharp debridement is usually only done on large, deep, or painful cuts and may need anaesthesia.
Ultrasound Debridement: This method uses low-frequency ultrasound to help wounds heal by getting rid of fluid and slough, reducing pain and breaking up biofilm.
Hydrosurgery is a new method that cleans wounds by using a high-pressure jet of sterile saline to cut and remove dead tissue while lowering the number of germs present.
New Therapies for Wound Care Treatment
Besides debridement, there are a number of more advanced treatments that can help wounds heal.
Regenerative Medicine: These methods use technologies like bioactive biomaterial matrices, stem cell therapy, gene therapy and bioengineered skin grafts to help the skin heal and grow back harmed tissues.
Modern Dressings for Wounds: Hydrogel dressings and other new materials keep wounds moist, which speeds up the mending process.
Topical Drug and Growth Factor Delivery: In these treatments, drugs and growth factors are put on the wound directly to help it heal.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: This treatment raises the amount of oxygen in the blood, which helps wounds that don't get enough blood flow to heal.
Negative Pressure Wound Treatment: This method, which is also called vacuum treatment, involves putting on a sealed dressing that is connected to a pump. The pump removes extra fluid and boosts blood flow to the wound.
Taking Care of Bed Sores Treatment at Home
Bedsores, which are also called pressure ulcers, need careful care to keep them from getting worse and to help them heal. Here are some important things you can do to take care of bedsores at home:
Regular Repositioning: To ease pressure on weak spots, change positions often.
Special mattresses and pillows: To keep pressure off of bony prominences, use mattresses and pillows that lower pressure.
Care for Wounds: Clean the wound gently with saline solution and cover it with the right bandage to keep it moist and prevent infection.
Nutrition: To help repair tissues, make sure you eat a varied diet with enough protein, vitamins and minerals.
Watch for Infection: Look out for signs of infection like more pain, redness, swelling, or pus and get medical help right away if you see any.
In conclusion
A complete plan that includes proper debridement, advanced wound treatments and careful at-home management is needed to treat wounds effectively. Healthcare providers and patients can work together to help people with wounds heal faster, avoid complications and enjoy life more by learning about the different treatment choices and using the right strategies.
