Migration minister Marjolein Faber faced criticism from all sides of the political spectrum as she defended her department’s 2025 spending plans in parliament during a heated debate on Thursday. Not only the minister’s asylum plans, including sending Syrians back to “safe” parts of the country, came under fire. She was also taken to task for failing to achieve anything in the four months since the government was sworn in and for failing to answer questions. The VVD, CDA and JA21 said the minister was taking too long to come up with any legislation while the CDA and ChristenUnie said she was failing to involve local government in her plans. Both far right party JA21 and the Socialists warned that her plans will run into trouble in the senate, while the SGP, CDA and Denk said her financial plans did not add up. Faber is “all talk and no action,” said CDA leader Henri Bontenbal. In particular, MPs are concerned about Faber’s plans to slash the number of jobs at the immigration service IND and the COA refugee settlement agency even though there is no suggestion that refugee numbers will fall. The most recent forecasts by the COA suggest 166,000 beds will be needed by 2028, but the minister is basing her plans on 25,000.

When the Tories came to power in 2010, NHS records show there were 144,455 overnight NHS hospital beds. By 2019 this figure had dropped to 127,225, a loss of 17,000 beds in total.

NHS hospital bed analysis for December 2022 shows:

“Compared to other nations, the UK has a very low total number of hospital beds relative to its population. The average number of beds per 1,000 people in OECD EU nations is 5, but the UK has just 2.4. Germany, by contrast, has 7.8." (BMA: 20/12/22)

In answer to the current NHS bed crisis Steve Barclay, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, made this statement in the House of Commons.

“We will block book beds in residential care homes to enable around 2500 people to be released from hospital where they are medically fit to be discharged.” (Steve Barclay: 09/01/22)

A more pathetic response to the NHS crisis is hard to imagine, but it does reinforce what we already suspect, which is that this government is determined to run down the NHS.

We know that successive Tory governments have cut a total of 17,000 NHS beds in the last decade, so temporarily buying in an extra 2500 beds in care homes will make no discernible difference to the bed shortage problem. In fact, it will make matters worse as the money for these extra beds is to come out of existing NHS budgets. In other words, the NHS will be funding the private sector care home industry.

What is needed is public investment in our NHS, both in bed capacity AND staff to manage them, but this is not going to happen while the free-market obsessed Sunak right-wing government is in power.

(no the words are not all on the same project, yes at least a couple hundred of them are on something i'm explicitly not writing, no they're not all good or useful words, but we're going to go with it and celebrate the functional, thank you so much for your understanding.)

‘Give him some space,’ Li Lianhua had said, and Di Feisheng had listened to him. After all, who knew Fang Duobing better than Li Lianhua?

But now, alone, Di Feisheng finds himself remembering Fang Duobing walking away, his head bowed. Li Lianhua would have wanted space. But Fang Duobing was not Li Lianhua. 

He finds him at the second inn that he checks. It’s the less nice of the two, and for a moment he hesitates. If Fang Duobing is here, maybe he truly doesn’t wish to be disturbed. 

He would know, though, that they would know to look for him here. Or, at least, Li Lianhua would. Maybe he only seeks to avoid his family right now. 

If he wishes to be alone, Fang Duobing will simply send him away. He hasn’t been shy of telling Di Feisheng to leave before, and this time, Di Feisheng will listen.

Decision made, he makes himself stop hiding his qi and knocks on the door. It’s uncomfortable, but he won’t force Fang Duobing to open the door to someone unknown, nor will he enter Fang Duobing's space uninvited, not now. 

If the door doesn’t open by the time he counts to ten, he decides, he will accept the dismissal and leave.

He gets to three.

Fang Duobing has been crying, but opens the door and steps back, nodding for Di Feisheng to enter. ‘Di mengzhu,’ he says, too politely. 

Di Feisheng shuts the door behind him, and Fang Duobing looks at him expectantly. 

This was a mistake, he thinks. He says, ‘I can leave, if you want. He said you’d want some space, but—’ 

‘That damned—’ chokes out Fang Duobing, and then he gulps air and turns away. Di Feisheng lets him, and waits. It’s a long time before Fang Duobing speaks again. ‘I thought… I thought this would feel different,’ he says, finally. When he turns around, his face is wet.

‘You thought you would feel free,’ Di Feisheng offers. Fang Duobing's head jerks up with shocked recognition, and Di Feisheng lets him stare. He knows they were there after him. He knows what they would have seen. Fang Duobing isn’t so foolish he wouldn’t have put it together.

The weather was supposed to be bucketing rain today and I got lucky, while I was outside today it didn't rain on me, except for once. The bus had pulled up at the mall (where it starts its run) and let the previous passengers off. So I pull up my hood and go stand in the line.

The first few to get on had gold cards (In NZ if you are over 65 you get one, benefits include free public transport at off peak times). Then came a youngish dude who wanted to use his bus card. The driver told him he had to wait as he needed to change over the bus info (i.e. numbers on banners, data for card readers).

So he waited, as did the man behind him who technically could have gotten on with his gold card, as did me, my mum and another couple of people. It's maybe 3 or 4 meters (10-13 feet) between the sheltered seats and the bus. The driver obviously knew we were waiting and therefore would not leave without us. I amend my statement, young dude waited maybe 15 seconds before letting himself onto the bus and sitting down.

Driver asked what he was doing as he'd told dude to wait. Dude said he didn't want to stand in the rain. I repeat it's a mild drizzle, and did I mention we live in a place known for bad weather? Older gentleman that was behind the young dude asked what he was doing to, dude said getting out of the rain. Driver asked him who he thought he was. Dude said he was sick and didn't want to be in the rain. Older gentleman asked why wasn't he at home if he was so sick. Dude said he was on his way to the docs and was adamant he'd done the right thing. I repeat the sheltered seats are a hop, skip and a jump from the bus.

Anyway it took less than a minute for the driver to switch the system then, after letting the rest of us on, he went and had a smoke in the sheltered area so we were like 3 minutes late leaving. Tell you what, I have never been less annoyed by someone smoking. Why would you show a bus driver such disrespect? I mean I've seen worse but like, this individual is driving you somewhere that you can't get yourself.

Long story short, please be nice to your bus drivers and train conductors etc.

I used my one personal floating holiday this year to take off Friday, November 1 in order to play the new Dragon Age game (that I have been waiting 10 YEARS to play). I literally had been imagining that day, a day where I would live alone, have time off of work, and a new Dragon Age game to play, for a decade.

And then I came down with a severe case of stomach flu.

this is such a massive boundary for me and i'm so upset. she knew i was gone this weekend because i have to work (when i work i'm out in the city so i just stay there for the night instead of dealing with the commute to/from college) or else i can't afford to yknow exist as a human being under capitalism but like. that's so fucked. she literally knew that i wouldn't be able to do ANYTHING about it bc i'm out of town for the weekend and she took advantage of that.

and she pretended that we never discussed having someone over she tried to play the "oh i'm sorry we just never talked about it before" card and i'm like. we literally DID talk about it. it was in the roommate contract that the college MADE US FILL OUT TOGETHER and we both agreed we would have to ASK each other and COMMUNICATE before anything like that happened.

the thing is i'm just a very personal type of person and this is a massive boundary she just crossed for me. and she was already really upsetting me bc she's been belittling me all the time and she's not respectful of my work and i woke up a couple times to her watching me sleep and she's been staring at me while i change and she doesn't listen when i tell her no, ever, and i'm very, very upset about this all. this is the last straw.
