Sharing about this fun historical rebind (D&C, 1876), and how I created a graphite fore-edge treatment concealing the fore-painting I painted. I think you enjoy the video too! (Tap link in bio.) #eidolonhouse #rarebooks #becomepartofthehistory #foreedgefriday #foreedgepainting #bookish #restoration

Facsimile end-sheet aged to match the adjoining page right down to the staining and wrinkles.👌🏼 There is a school of thought among some binders and conservators nowadays that facsimiles should be obvious; I don't fall in that category. Binders from the past matched paper stock and blended their facsimiles so well that their facsimiles are now collectible. It's a matter of honoring the book and giving it all it deserves.⚜️ #becomepartofthehistory #valueindetails #rarebooks #facsimile #eidolonhouse #bookish #restoration #collectibles #igbooks

Love this custom Scottish Herringbone tooling design I created on a recent historical rebind. Also, using brass tools that I hand made to decorate the cover is satisfying as a craftsman, and adds a personal more intentional element to the custom work I do for my clients. I'm privileged to know that my hard work and designs are an addition to the timeline of the rare books I bind and restore, all made possible by the extraordinary collectors I work with every day.👌🏼 #becomepartofthehistory #collectconserverestore #eidolonhouse #custommade #myart #rarebooks #bookbinding #goldtooling #handcrafted #bookish #bookstagram

We recently finished a fun lot of work that required a wide variety of different styles of bookbinding, enclosures, & restoration. This work never gets dull that's for sure.👌🏼 We also updated our website for the new year; no graphics, just a lot of good information, beautiful books, and us. Look around (link in bio), and feel free to reach out to us with any questions.✌🏼 #rarebooks #bookbinding #bookish #rarebookconservation #bookcollection #booklover #oldbook #bookstagram #restoration #eidolonhouse #BecomePartoftheHistory

Nothing lasts forever, but repairing broken boards, cleaning the edges of the text block, and hydrating the leather is the least we can do to extend the life of collectible rare books. (1570 Luther's Works.)👌🏼 #rarebooks #rarebookconservation #restoration #oldbooks #collectibles #booklover #bookstagram #bookish #becomepartofthehistory

Happy #Marbledmonday! This marbled paper detail came from boards we took off a book for a historical rebind we did early in 2016. VID tip: Marbled paper wasn't widely popular in English bindings until the 1670s. If an English binding is older than the 1600s, and there are marbled paper boards or endpapers, that's a clue about the book's history: It's quite possible the book had previous restoration, or was even rebound.🕵🏻🕵🏼‍♀️ #valueindetails #booksleuth #collectibles #getwise #marbledpaper #rarebooks #bookish #bookhistory #becomepartofthehistory

One of several beautiful blocked impression examples (binder's brass, or panel stamps) I have from the 1500s. This was once gold stamped, but over the years the gold has worn off and revealed the remnants of the glair-stained leather. VID tip: There is a school of thought in the bookbinding world that says books were only hand tooled until the invention of the blocking press around 1830-1832; this is just not true. Before the arming press, binders would use a regular book press to tool block designs into the leather. Block printing on paper began in the 1400s in Europe, so it stands to reason block pressing on leather can go back just as far, and there is evidence that block pressing or panel-stamps were used as far back as the 1200s.🕵🏻🕵🏼‍♀️ Sign up for our Value in Details newsletter for more detailed information such as this regarding rare books. Starts January 19 (Link in bio). #valueindetails #bookhistory #rarebooks #bookish #collectibles #blockprinting #bookstagram #becomepartofthehistory

It's not every day that a conservator in private practice has the opportunity to work on an original Gutenberg leaf, 1455. It was exciting and humbling at the same time. (The first major printed book in the Western world.) This page is from the book of Numbers, chapter 22; a great story about Balaam and his donkey. #rarebooks #gutenberg #letterpress #Bible #conservation #becomepartofthehistory #eidolonhouse

One page is original, the other is a facsimile. Can you tell which is which?🤔 The page is about the silver peace metal that was given to Chief Red Jacket by President George Washington in 1792. The peace metal was to commemorate Red Jacket's visit to Washington D.C. as an ambassador of the Six Nations. The original text will be kept encapsulated and in a safe place, while the facsimile will be encapsulated in a presentation enclosure to be displayed in downtown Dallas at Old Parkland Corporate Campus for visitors to admire and read. #history #ushistory #ephemera #BecomePartoftheHistory #collectibles #eidolonhouse
