Sabé, born Tsabin, was a member of a family of musicians who set their daughter on the same path. These feelings were requited, with Queen’s Hope creating a love triangle where Sabé represented ideology and duty and Anakin was selfish love. As we know, Padmé chose Anakin, but a deciding factor was Sabé’s self esteem being temporarily shattered by Palpatine. Her wider moral view seems to have degraded after spending over two decades focusing on avenging Padmé instead of joining the wider Rebellion. However, even working for the Empire, she hasn’t gone completely evil yet- doing things like pretending to kill a bunch of refugees to gain their loyalty instead of actually killing them.

Gifted Kid SyndromeTM. Vernestra Rwoh is primarily a character in the middle grade High Republic novels (as appearing in the YA Out of the Shadows). A prodigy, she solves the problem with adults having to be out of the picture in middle grade novels by being one of the youngest Jedi Knights ever- being knighted at 15 after an unusually short term as Stellan Gios’ padawan also from an abnormally young age. Following a vision from the Force, she secretly modified her lightsaber to become a light-whip. 

She was on the Steady Wing, a diplomatic ship, that blew up and killed all of the adults. Working with the prodigious inventor Avon Starros, Honesty Weft, and the padawan Imri Canatros, they survived and captured the Nihil who sabotaged the ship. She also talked Imri down from the Dark Side and became his new master, despite their similar ages. During the Attack on the Republic Fair, she joined Ram Jamoram and Lula Talisola, who both looked up to her, in restoring communications on the planet. Later, she and her Padawan investigated a gravity well generator the Nihil were working on. During that time, her hyperspace visions were reactivated by Mari San Tekka. She was with the old woman when she finally managed to die, denying the Nihil any new Paths. She gave Venrestra one final path.

Later, following visions of Avon being in danger, she and Imri found that the Nihil were kidnapping children to be made into recruits on the planet Dalna. By leading the Jedi of the Dalna temple to the camp, they were able to alert Starlight Beacon and evacuate the planet before it was geologically destabilized by the Nihil’s kyber crystal experiments. She was in the top part of Starlight Beacon when it was destroyed and participated in the group effort to hold it together. She presumably escaped.

As a prodigy, she had the maturity and serenity expected of a Jedi. Fear didn’t trouble her, but she struggled with self-doubt, wondering if she could really be a Jedi Knight and Master to someone the same age as her. She also understood not to let her friendship with Avon cause her to be more worried about her than the missing children on Dalna (commentary with how her being aroace doesn’t make her immune to attachment). She’s been childhood friends with Nova for a long time, starting out as pen pals. She doesn’t approve of how Nova treats people, but somewhat understands where she’s coming from and just wants her friend to be okay

She used to live in The City, in a small penthouse she was Miserable in.

Basically, she moved to the mountain town this story takes place in due to both her parents jobs. Her father is starting a new super store chain and wants to “personally oversee its development” and her mother needs a place she can easily see the stars for the sake of her research.

The super store is a hit and quickly takes over the town, causing the rest of the shopping district to struggle to survive. In an act of rebellion, she becomes “The Azure Swan” and robs the rich in order to give to the poor.

As for that pin we put in her being trans, it accidentally went into defining her home life a little. I went into writing her like “okay. She’s gonna be trans, but I don’t wanna make a story about a trans character that solely revolves around her identity.” And then accidentally did that. Lmao.

So her parents Do Accept her but it’s not Unconditionally. Her parents believe that if she’s going to be a girl, then she needs to “play the part” correctly. She needs to be prepared to take over the company and live up to the legacy of both of her parents. She needs to excel in everything she commits herself to, and represent her family as the peak of perfection they believe themselves to be.

It’s exhausting, and puts a lot of pressure for her day to day, but she manages (just barely)

Her arc is about self acceptance, and understanding that she doesn’t need the validation of her parents to get validation from herself. She doesn’t need them to define what Being a Woman means for her.

what are some trends you like about current historical romance (say, the last 3-5 years?)

Lol it's a.......... mixed bag.

--more hybrid/indie/small press that is basically indie authors; it's happening very slowly, and it's nothing compared to the prevalence of erotic romance, monster romance, alien romance etc in that space. But just like PNR kinda died out from traditional publishing (or at least became a space where only a few established giants could survive, and not at the rate they once did) and was reborn in indie pub, not exactly in the same way but through monster romance, fantasy romance, and yes still sooooome more conventional PNR, I think HR may have to go more indie to get a new lease on life. I think that as authors like Scarlett Scott, Elisa Braden, etc. see success with indie/hybrid, as you see more established trad authors release these novella collections like Joanna Shupe and Eva Leigh have when teaming up with more indie-known authors like Sierra Simone, Nicola Davidson, and Adriana Herrera (her historicals are trad but I think she had some indie output before?), it will become more "normal" for historicals to be self-published/indie, but. It's taking some time. I just feel like a lot of young romance readers are getting books off KU more than ever, and there needs to be more HR taking that share. That accessibility will make it easier for readers to take a chance on it and hopefully see that it's not all dusty Heyer repeats.

--Slooooowly HR seems to becoming more diverse, but it's still got a long way to go. There have long been books about people of color and queer people in HR. We need more. Books like A Lady for A Duke, Something Fabulous/Something Spectacular, A Caribbean Heiress in Paris, the Davenports, are good. We. Need. More.

--I don't honestly know that it's happened enough for it to be called a trend, but I hope...? It will? Kink and non-monogamy (not that these things go hand in hand) being more popular. Nicola Davidson writes kinky historical romances and has for a while, often with menages involved. Scarlett Peckham has been writing explicitly kinky HR. Her Avon books, I will say, are *less so*, but her next book does feature non-monogamy. I love kink in romance, and it's ridiculous to me to act like it didn't exist until recently. I think non-monogamous happy endings should also be represented. I would LOVE to see more alpha-type heroes with femdom heroines. (I am... letting this idea percolate in my mind.) The Duke Gets Even being marketed as a book with rough sex as one of the selling points, and having that be explicitly depicted (like, leaving bite marks and bruises very intentionally being portrayed as an act of carnal devotion, not something weird or accidental but okay) as a trad romance was cool.

--Less virgin heroines, and those that are virgins being more likely to get down before marriage, and widowhood not being the only way a woman can be a not-virgin. Nellie Young wasn't a virgin or a widow. I don't think either of Sarah MacLean's Hell's Belle's heroines we've seen thus far were virgins (and I doubt the Duchess, at least, will be) and neither were widows. The heroine of Hotel of Secrets is not a virgin or a widow. Neither of Scarlett Peckham's Society of Sirens heroines are virgins or widows.

--Older-ish heroines? Or rather, heroines who aren't 20-25. Again, Hell's Belles heroines--Sesily is over 30, I wanna say Adelaide is mid to late twenties? The heroine of Scarlett Peckham's next book (The Portrait of a Duchess) is in her late thirties. Sophie Jordan's next heroine is late thirties. Eva Leigh had a great novella out in Villain I'd Like to F... with a couple in their forties.

--A bite niche, but the "he's into me but he's supposed to be with my daughter/stepdaughter"???? Diana Quincy's Her Night with The Duke, Sophie Jordan's upcoming The Countess, Megan Frampton's upcoming His Study in Scandal.

--Heroes who are LOVELY supportive men once you get to know them, but will also also fuck the heroine into the mattress and won't be gentle about it. I love a horrible hero who needs to get worse before he can get better, but I get that this is a harder sell today, especially in trad. This is a happy compromise. He's a Mark Darcy--might be a bit cool and cutting at times, is ultimately a VERY fundamentally decent man, but yes nice boys do fucking kiss (and fuck) like that. The Duke of Clayborn from Sarah MacLean's Heartbreaker and Lockwood from The Duke Gets Even ARE this.

--Not a trend but I hope it will be: books that are set in somewhere not-UK and not-America. Hotel of Secrets is set in Vienna. I fucking ADORED that book. It was magical. The Parisian setting of (part of) A Caribbean Heiress in Paris is similarly great.

--Not a trend but I hope it will be: authors just saying "I do what I want" with regards to accuracy, up front. Like, do the research and then do what the story necessitates and acknowledge this is fantasy. Alexis Hall has notes that make this clear in Something Fabulous and Something Spectacular. I think it's great. More.

--More intersection with witchcraft and magic. India Holton's books are great examples; I think Alexis Hall's Mortal Follies has some magical realism in a similar sense.

Even still, I spent the whole of yesterday after my training, which is more like a retelling of all my past mistakes, discussing what property could be purchased for the eventuality of a home for this mistress.

Exhibits and collectors editions mark 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's First Folio

On the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's First Folio, rare originals are being displayed and publishers are offering collectors editions of Shakespeare's plays, including one that sells for $1,500.

Scholars believe that between 200-300 copies still survive from the late 1623 release of “Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories & Tragedies." Presided over by two friends and former colleagues of Shakespeare, who had died in 1616, the Folio ensured that lasting texts existed for “Macbeth,” “Twelfth Night” and other cornerstones of Western literature. In Shakespeare's lifetime, many of his works were unpublished or available only in cheap paperback editions.

“Without the First Folio we would have lost a world of words,” Gregory Doran, artistic director emeritus of the Royal Shakespeare Company, writes in the introduction to “The Complete Plays” of Shakespeare, a new publication.

First folios have been on exhibit everywhere from the British Museum to the New York Public Library and at least two major book projects will mark the anniversary.

The British Library is collaborating with Rizzoli Books in New York on “Shakespeare’s First Folio: 400th Anniversary Facsimile Edition,” contained within a slipcase cover. With a list price of $135, the book is 928 pages and includes an introductory booklet co-written by Adrian Edwards, head curator of the British Library’s Printed Heritage Collections.

The most ambitious, and exclusive project, is “The Complete Plays,” a limited edition from the Folio Society, an employee-owned company in London that puts out customized volumes ranging from "Beowulf" to George R.R. Martin's “A Song of Ice and Fire” series. The Society has printed just 1,000 copies of the 3-volume box set, with a list price of $1,500. Besides Doran's introduction, the Folio Society release includes a foreword by Dame Judi Dench. Each set is hand-numbered by illustrator Neil Packer.

More than three-quarters of “The Complete Plays” have already sold, according to the publisher.

“In an era when everything seems disposable, I feel like there's a good market for fine editions of classic books,” says Folio Society publishing director Tom Walker.

The First Folio was daring, even audacious for its time, when such publications were “reserved for learned treatises, hefty genealogical texts, books of religious or historiographical importance, or even works by monarchs,” according to Shakespeare scholar Chris Laoutaris. Before Shakespeare the only playwright known to have been so honored was his contemporary Ben Jonson, who honored himself by overseeing “The Workes of Benjamin Jonson” in 1616. While the British Museum edition is relatively affordable, the Folio Society's production is closer to the intended market for the original release.

"Only those with deep pockets, and the space to read them, could afford such luxurious products," says Laoutaris, an associate professor at the Shakespeare Institute in the playwright's native Stratford-On-Avon and author of “Shakespeare’s Book: The Intertwined Lives Behind the Fist Folio,” which came out this year. “When it was released, the First Folio cost more to produce than any other collection of plays in history up until that point.”

The Folio proved successful enough that an updated edition, the Second Folio, was published in 1632, a Third Folio in 1663 and a fourth in 1685. By the 19th century, the original Folio was becoming a valued piece of history, in part through the efforts of collectors Henry and Emily Folger, and a symbol of might for the British Empire. Sir George Grey, who had served as a colonial governor, established libraries worldwide that included copies of the First Folio.

“For Grey, the First Folio represented the pinnacle of culture, but specifically English culture,” Laoutaris says. “He sought nothing less than the obliteration of the language and culture of the native populations in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, nurturing a desire to replace these with the English language and its literary products."

The United States is home to more than half of all existing copies of the First Folio, followed by the United Kingdom and Japan, with handfuls of editions also existing in Germany, France, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand among other countries. For antiquarians, the First Folio is the greatest of prizes: One sold for $9.9 million in 2020. For scholars and countless admirers, the Folio is secondary to the plays themselves.

"Shakespeare’s stature, for the past 400 years, is a reflection of his plays’ staying power on the stage far more than their survival in a collected works," says James Shapiro, a professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University and author of several books on Shakespeare.

“You can buy a Ben Jonson folio for a few thousand dollars; a Shakespeare folio will cost you millions. The reason for this simple: the remarkable afterlife of his comedies, histories, and tragedies in theaters throughout the world.”
