fwb!ellie x bunny!reader nsfw drabble
fwb!ellie who loves to tease you in public, no matter where you guys are. whether it was school or at a store, even dina's house, it didn't matter.
fwb!ellie who adores physical touch, no matter if you guys are supposed to be studying, she has to touch you, if you guys are eating, she has to touch you, if you guys are in a store or going somewhere fancy, she has to touch you.
fwb!ellie who buys you the hottest bunny rabbit outfit for halloween so she can see you all slutty and sexy just to then skip trick or treating to fuck you all night in your bunny outfit. after all you were her little bunny.
fwb!ellie who runs at your beck and call when you hurt yourself or when you are feeling down about yourself and your value. who wipes your tears and cradles you telling you everything is alright.
fwb!ellie who used to call you thumper when you guys were little and to this day still calls you thumper to remind you of the memory of you bouncing and stomping, having a little tantrum like a bunny.
fwb!ellie who tells joel all about you. who's eyes light up when speaking about you just to shut down by reminding herself that you guys aren't dating, but boy she wishes you guys were.
fwb!ellie who loves to eat you out any chance she gets. your feeling down, she can help, feeling stressed, puts her head between your legs, feeling happy, eats you out anyway whether you like it or not, she always has to taste you.
fwb!ellie who just loves to invite you to parties even though she knows how shy you get sometimes. but she loves to see you become the life of the party once you get comfortable.
fwb!ellie who loves staring at your figure from the corner of the room at said party with a red solo cup in her hand. you in that pink skin-tight dress with cute pink heels to match and that adorable pink hibiscus flower clip in your hair. she loves watching your hips sway to the beat as you dance with dina.
fwb!ellie who denies all accusations of you two dating. looking at jesse and dina with the best poker face she can muster up. "dudes, I swear, were not dating! we're just friends." ellie says. and just as she thinks she's convinced them, you walk out of her bedroom with her flannel on and it's buttoned up with her boxers on as you grab a snack. which leads to jesse and dina raising eyebrows at ellie and giving her a 'your lying' look.
fwb!ellie who talks joel into getting a pink promise ring just so ellie can propose it to you and officially make you her girlfriend. ellie is so nervous when she takes you out to eat and takes you to your favorite park where she does it. you immediately say yes and she smiles the happiest smile in the world.
fwb!ellie who is no longer your friend with benefits but your full-time girlfriend who takes you to meet joel and shows you off at dinner because she's so happy you're finally hers officially.

Pretty Girl
pairing: Dad!sy x Pregnant!Mom!Reader
summary: Baby Ellie has her daddy wrapped round her little finger, but so does her momma. After-all they’re his pretty girl (smut)

Henry Masterlist, Full Masterlist
︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵
“Hey pretty, c’mere and give me a kiss” Sy cooed nuzzling into his wife’s side on their bench swing in the backyard, his hands rubbing over her exposed bump which was housing their second baby. “mhm okay” She gave in ultimately giving him a soft wet kiss, having to push him away for a breath. “D-da d-da” Both their heads turning to face their 1 year old babygirl, who was settled on her play mat out in the shade.
Aika rested her head on her paws whilst on the play mat, letting baby Ellie rest her body against hers, ultimately using Aika as her backrest. The Syverson family was spending this nice summers day out on the porch, with Ellie clad in only a diaper just to keep her cool. “Yes my gorgeous girl, ya enjoyin’ bein’ out here with your momma and dada?” Sy cooed slipping off the bench and onto the mat a few feet away, Ellie was holding up her own bottle as she drank away, her other hand reaching up for Sy’s hand.
Ever since Ellie had seen the effect of the word ‘da’ on her daddy, she’s been using it ever since as a sign of a beck and call. “Da, da da” The soft curled bundle of joy tottered away from Aika’s body and wobbled her way onto her daddy’s lap. “Aren’t ya jus’ precious sweetpea, you n your mama n’ baby brother” Sy growled peppering kisses all over Ellie’s face until she started giggling and had to push his face away.
“Sy stop it and give her a chance” Y/n giggled watching, knowing damn well her babygirl loved giving out kisses too, Ellie’s lips already pouting out to land kisses on her daddy’s beard covered cheek. “mwah da” Ellie babbled happily, her curls bouncing with her, her hands on his shoulders to stabilise her standing up. “Wow babygirl, best kiss av ever gotten” Sy gasped hugging her tiny body to his immediately, carrying her onto his lap again.
“Da-da baba?” Ellie pulled away looking up with her innocent doe eyes, picking up her empty bottle up to her daddy, another small pout playing on her lips. “N' here I thought you wanted to cuddle with dada” Sy playfully scoffed settling Ellie down by Y/n, their babygirl wasting no time in cuddling on her mama’s lap, her head resting on her chest, her tiny hands feeling the baby’s kicks; her eyes twinkling watching Sy walk inside with her precious baba.
“got daddy wrapped round your lil finger baby” Y/n smiled nuzzling her head against her baby’s, pressing a big kiss on her cheek as she rocked her gently. “One baba per request” Sy said rocking back into the backyard, shaking the small lukewarm pink bottle in his hand, testing the temperature on his wrist before he handed it back to his little precious petal. “mm baba dada” She said handing it back to him.
Sy smiled picking up the tiny tot and sitting down beside his wife with Ellie laying across his lap as if she was a newborn again. His hands steadily holding the baby bottle to her lips as she suckled softly, her naturally wide eyes peering around the garden at all the different birds before settling on the baby blues of her dad. One of her hands reaching behind her for her momma and the other holding onto Sy’s hand that was holding the bottle.
“Think she’ll go down for a nap soon?” He smirked looking up to his wife, that same playful lustful loon in his eyes whenever his eye caught hers, his head leaning down to kiss and nuzzle against the side of her face like a possessive bear cub. “Oh yeah she’s your daughter Sy honey, fill her belly and she’ll be knocked out soon enough” Y/n swooned, leaning her body towards him as her hand patted down his soft stomach and body.
“See look her pretty lil eyes are already closing, must be the cool breeze helpin cool her down too” Checking her nappy was still clean, after about 15 minutes Y/n had burped and lulled her babygirl to sleep, ultimately leading her to put her down in her crib. Turning on the baby monitor and adjusting the room temperature, Y/n left the room slightly ajar as Sy and her retreated to hanging out in their shared bedroom.
“I ever tell ya how pretty you are? Especially when you’re full n’ round cus a’ me” Sy poses on the bed like a girl, his feet swinging in the air as he lay on his stomach, his hands cupping his face whilst he just stared at his wife. “Yes loverboy, you tell me at least every hour”
“That can’t be right, i’ll make sure to say it every minute then” He joked rolling onto his back, guiding her to sit on his lap, his hands immediately clasping around her body to cage her closer to him. “But seriously you are just gorgeous, jus’ how do you get even more beautiful the more life goes on” Y/n soon found herself feeling hot and bothered the more compliments and kisses she received, not to mention the subtle ass squeezes Sy had managed to squeeze in between his monologues.
“Stop it Sy please” She whined carefully tracing his brow with her thumb, trying to distract herself from looking into his eyes which were desperately trying to catch hers. “What can’t I pay my pretty mama compliments? I’m havin’ to stop myself ‘ere” Growling lightly he slightly jerked his hips up, letting her feel his hardened cock through his grey sweatpants, his torso bare. “Fuck Sy”
“I know baby m’sorry, I can’ help it, anytime I see you, smell you or hear you, the little guy gets excited n’ needs ya” Rubbing up her back soothingly under his shirt she was wearing, he felt her slowly start to shift herself back and forth on his lap, her wetness starting to leak through her thin cotton panties to create a darker stain on his pants. “Oh baby what are ya doin?”
“I need somethin Sy, seein’ ya be such a good daddy to Ellie and how you’re just so fuckin’ sexy it actually kills me” She suddenly broke out into a curse, seeing Sy basically move around the house was like porn for her, seeing him tend to the laundry and housework? She was about to bend him over if she could. Seeing him try his absolute best to lighten her load, even taking his babygirl Ellie out on his walks just so she could have some peace and quiet.
“You gonna use me baby? Get what you need momma, so fuckin’ pretty like this, my perfect angel, got my cock all swollen jus by bein you” He pushed back some of her hair away from her face, her expression furrowed as she quickened her pace knowing it wouldn’t be long before Ellie woke up again. “Y-you make me feel so good” Moving her underwear to the side she let her bare sensitive pussy rub against the fabric of his sweatpants, the head of his cock peeking out of the band as per her request.
“Hold on pretty-“ He gasped pulling down his sweatpants to his thighs, letting them feel each other’s skin as they humped against each other lovingly. Her swollen lips parted to hug around his shaft, covering his length in her slick wet juices, the lewd sounds filling the bedroom along with her whines and whimpers; the both of them being careful to not be so loud. “So soft” He would whisper out as his thumb caressed her sensitive nerve, watching her face contort whilst he stimulated her clit.
“You gonna cum for me pretty girl? Can feel it, come on baby I want it so bad” He whispered against her neck, his lips inching upwards until they reached hers. His tongue slipping into her mouth engaging it in a wet spit filled kiss, keeping her quiet. “M-m gonna come Sy” She whispered urgently feeling that band in her stomach grow tighter, with it eventually snapping once one of Sy’s paws wandered up to tug and rub at her hardened nipples. “Aww baby you did so good, m’ so prouda you pretty, makin’ yourself feel good on your man’s lap” He cooed in between grunts as he tugged at his hardened shaft to squirt ropes of cum onto her pussy.
“You proud of me” Y/n smiled hazily leaning back, massaging his cum into her pussy, her eyes peering at him as he brought her back in for a sloppy make-out session, leaving both their chins shiny with spit. “Fuckin’ best thing ta ever happen to me”

Ellie Williams Headcanons: Bossy!Reader
Pfft this is so funny.
Does everything you say- treats you like an absolute queen fr.
Only she can call you bossy, no one else.
she will (and has) fight them if they say otherwise
Calls you ma'am (she thinks she's so funny 😐)
"Get me a coke"
"what's the magic word~" she hummed, looking over her shoulder from her desk and looking at you sprawled out on Ellie's mattress.
"please get me a coke" you rephrased eyes not straying from the screen of your phone.
"yes ma'am".
A small scoff left your mouth as she sauntered out the door.
'I heard that!" Ellie shouted halfway down the stairs.
"Love you Els!" You replied.
"Love you too sweetheart!"
Dina makes fun of Ellie for being at your beck and call
Princess treatment 24/7
Would kiss the ground you walk on if she could.
Is the walking definition of a gentlewoman.
Cold? Have her coat princess. Hungry? She's got your fave snacks on deck. Tired from walking? She'll carry you. Shoes untied? She's doing them up for you.
The sweetest dynamic ever 😭
-----------
Really short ones cause I've had the most painful migraine the past few days 😭

King Nothing
Joel Miller x fem!reader
A/n: OKAY more angst— I’m so sorry 😭 this fic was loosely inspired by the Metallica song King Nothing which is a good listen and I recommend!! Also not proofread so any and all mistakes are mine! Btw this story was made with both game and show Joel in mind! As always constructive criticism is welcome! Enjoy! Likes, comments, and reblogs are appreciated! 🫶🫶💗💗
Warnings: none
W/c: 693
* ・‥…━━━━━━━ *˖◛⁺♡ ━━━━━━━…‥・
You were an obedient lover. You gave Joel everything you could. When he was tired, you’d massage his sore muscles. When he needed to feel someone’s skin on his, you were there to satisfy the itch he had. But something Joel could never give to you was his heart. Sure you had a very loving physical relationship but there was hardly any emotion behind it. Not from your part but his. You gave him your heart, you gave him everything you were. You were there for his every beck and call and yet he seemed so far away. Countless nights you’d spend crying in your pillow, looking at the ceiling as if asking God Himself to enlighten you as to why Joel didn’t care about you the same way you did. Even then, even throughout all the heartache you endured you still loved him and treated him like a king. You still treated him as if he were some sort of savior you owed your whole being to. Days grew into months, months into years and you still had that hole in your heart. One that never seemed to close back up, instead getting bigger and bigger with every meaningless fuck, every meaningless touch. You could only take so much.
Every day you grew distant. Cold. Something Joel was not used to. Of course like any normal “couple” you had your arguments and disagreements but nothing like this before. He was quite confused. You knew how he was and how little he could give you. He thought you were fine with that. How mistaken he was. No longer did you wake him with a kiss to his nose or with your gentle fingers combing through his scalp. No longer did your eyes sparkle when he addressed you. No longer did you wait for him to come home with lotion in hand, ready to massage away the kinks from his back. It was like you were a completely different person. He wasn’t sure how he felt.. he shouldn’t be feeling this way- he wasn’t attached to you.. was he? He was second guessing himself every time he saw your beautiful smile that was no longer directed at him. And missed when you scolded him, telling him to take it easy, all while using your fingers to rub the stress and pain from the day away. He missed when he was your everything.
Joel was not himself. He swore to all the gods he remembered that he was not in love with you, that he did not need you.. then why.. why was your absence affecting him so much? You’ve even stopped sleeping beside him, the place that used to be yours cold every night. He couldn’t even talk to you about your sudden change in behavior because that’s not who Joel Miller is. Joel Miller is a hardened survivor that didn’t need anyone. He tried to live like this wasn’t bothering him in the slightest but he wasn’t doing a very good job at it. Tommy and Ellie both noticed the shift in your one sided relationship but didn’t dare bring it up. This was something Joel had to figure out and fix on his own. What a stubborn man.
Eventually you moved on. You still cared deeply for Joel and Ellie, always making them food but interacting with Joel as little as possible. It was almost like you both were a divorced couple only together to take care of the child that was in your hands. When you felt like you were okay you decided to date again. Joel saw your interactions with different men, finally you had settled down with one. The sparkle in your eyes returning, but not directed at him.. directed at the other asshole who made you laugh.. made you smile.. made you feel loved and cared for.. that should’ve been him. He was foolish to have let you go, foolish to not have loved you like you deserved, foolish to have toyed with your precious heart. He now realizes what he’s lost.. his castle came crumbling down. Where was his crown now? He was only King Nothing now.

Jake hadn’t left any clear instructions on what to do with Ellie. He had been so caught off guard, you assumed, by the last minute call to base that he had wrongly assumed you knew important things.
Like if she went to daycare on Tuesdays and what she ate for breakfast and what time you had to drop her off and where.
So when you woke up to Ellie’s small hands tapping on your face, you were startled to say the least.
“Natalie,” she whispered and you shook awake, her tiny face only inches from yours. “I have to go potty.”
“Oh,” you murmured, sitting up and stretching your arm. “OK, sweetie, the bathroom is over here.”
You led her to the en suite bathroom. You weren’t sure if you should stay or leave. You knew nothing about raising kids.
“Do you need help?”
She shook her head. “No.”
“OK then,” you said. “I’ll just be out here in the bedroom OK? I’ll get your clothes and toothbrush from the stuff your daddy packed you.”
You wandered out into the kitchen and started to unpack the bags. Jake had sorted her clothes into outfits, and there was a small plastic ziplock bag with a tiny toothbrush, a comb and some baby shampoo. You grabbed the bag and hurried back into the bathroom where Ellie was trying, fruitlessly, to reach the sink to wash her hands.
“Oh!” you said, rushing over and dropping the bag on the marble counter, lifting her up under her armpits until she could reach the faucet. “Here you go.”
“Thank you,” she murmured and you looked at her in the mirror and smiled.
“OK, do you take a bath in the morning or at night?”
“At night.”
“Perfect,” you said, pulling out her toothbrush and getting it wet before spreading on some toothpaste. “Can you brush your teeth and then I’m going to have you pick out an outfit, OK?”
She nodded and rubbed one eye with her hand. It didn’t occur to you until that moment that your alarm had never gone off. Beyond the window, it was dark outside. As Ellie brushed her teeth, you grabbed your phone from the nightstand. It was 6:15. You had to stifle a laugh. Ellie had gotten you up earlier than you’d risen in years.
“Honey? What time do you usually get up?”
“I don’t know,” she said through a mouthful of toothpaste and you lifted her again to spit and rinse her mouth into the sink. When you put her down, she laid the toothbrush on the counter. “Daddy says I get up too early.”
You laughed. “Think I’m going to have to agree with him. OK, let’s get you dressed.”
Once you had gotten Ellie dressed in a pair of small corduroy pants and a sweater, you sat her down with a glass of juice and a bowl of cereal. It was lucky you even had food in the house, let alone not-expired milk, and you made a mental note to keep kid-friendly food on hand in the future.
“Are you OK?” you asked softly. “I have to go get ready.”
She nodded, watching the news that you had popped on the TV in the kitchen.
You smiled and made your way back to the bathroom, calling Rebecca. “Pick up, pick up,” you muttered as the phone rang.
“Hello?” She was groggy.
“Becks, it’s Natalie,” you said and you heard her cough.
“Nat? What the fuck its like five in the morning.”
“It’s six thirty,” you said. “And I have a problem that I need advice on.”
“Oh God,” she murmured. “What is it?”
“Jake left Ellie at my house in the middle of the night. He got called in to some mission with an hour’s notice, and just left her here. I don’t know what to do. Does she go to daycare? Do I take her to work with me? What do kids eat for lunch? Do they nap?”
“Jesus,” she said and you heard her sigh. “OK, so he left zero instructions?”
“None. Wait, let me check my messages.” You pulled your phone away from your face, tapping the screen. There was an unread message from Jake.
Nat, I’m sorry. I promise we’ll talk when I’m back. PS, Ellie’s car seat is on the porch. Daycare was canceled. Love, Jake.
“Should have done that first.” You sighed. “Daycare was canceled. Guess she’s coming to the office.”
“You could call in sick.”
You shook your head. “Not with the Blackstone case almost done. I’ll just have to ply her with candy and drop her in a conference room with an iPad for most of the day.”
“I’ll help you,” Rebecca said. “Go shower and I’ll see you in an hour.”
***
Ellie’s tiny hand slotted into yours as the elevator doors opened. She had her glittery pink backpack slung over her shoulders, and you smiled at Tracy, the receptionist who did a double take when she saw Ellie.
“Well who do we have here?” Tracy said, walking around the desk and crouching down. “Aren’t you sweet?”
“This is Ellie,” you said. “She’s my friend Jake’s daughter.”
Ellie smiled. “Good morning.” Her voice was like liquid sunshine.
“Hi Ellie,” Tracy said, her aging face crinckled with a smile.
“Tracy, would you mind getting Ellie settled in conference room D?” you asked. “I reserved it all day so it should be clear. I just need to grab some stuff from my desk and then I’ll be right in.”
“Of course, Ms. West,” she said, offering Ellie her hand. “Ellie, do you want to come with me?”
Ellie looked up at you with wide green eyes and you nodded, giving her a soft smile. “Go on, sweetie. I’ll be right there.”
She nodded and took Tracy’s hand, waddling down the hallway. A few associates shot questioning looks your way as you booked it to your desk, grabbing your laptop and paperwork. Rebecca slid into view. “Where is she?”
“Conference room D with Tracy, no doubt already eating some kind of powdered donut from the break room.”
Rebecca leaned against the desk. “I can’t believe he left her with you.”
“You’re telling me,” you said, shoving pens into your tote. “Becks, I don’t know what to do with a kid. This morning I fed her Captain Crunch cereal with nearly-expired almond milk, and I kept sticking my head out of the shower every twenty seconds to listen and make sure she wasn’t screaming because she had somehow fallen from the couch.”
Rebecca laughed and put a tender hand on your arm. “You’re insane and I love it. Take a deep breath. When is he coming back?” “Tonight, allegedly. But I have no idea if that’s going to be true, or what time.” You glanced over at the far wall of conference rooms, spotting Ellie’s blonde curls from afar. “At this point, I’m operating under the assumption that I’m her guardian for the interim.”
“Does he have a living will?”
“God, you sound like such a lawyer,” you groaned, starting down the hallway. Rebecca fell into step next to you as you made your way to the kitchen to grab a coffee. “I have no idea. He sprung this on me. I don’t think he planned for anything like this to ever happen. He’s supposed to be a full-time instructor now, not flying the jets. This was unexpected.” You poured coffee into Rebecca’s outstretched mug, and then into your own. “She slept in my bed last night. I woke up with her tiny hand on my face.”
She laughed. “OK, that’s pretty cute.”
“It was fucking adorable, that’s the problem.”
“How is that a problem?”
You sighed. “She’s so cute and sweet. And it fucking terrifies me. Who does she think I am? She must be so confused about what’s happening. I don’t think he’s ever left her before, not like this.”
“You’re getting ahead of yourself,” Rebecca said, leading the way toward the conference room. “She’s just a kid. Tonight, when Jake is back, you can figure the rest out. But right now you have to go in there and put on a smile so she doesn’t get worried that her dad isn’t here.”
“You’re right.” You grabbed the door handle to the glass conference room and Ellie looked up with a grin. “Do you want to meet her?”
“Obviously.”
“Hey there,” you said, setting your stuff down on a seat across the table from where Ellie was coloring with Tracy. “Thanks, Tracy,” you added. “Appreciate it.”
The older woman stood up and smiled. “Of course, Ms. West. Ellie, it was really nice to meet you. Maybe later we can see if there are any treats in the kitchen?”
You rolled your eyes toward Rebecca who stifled a laugh. Ellie waved as Tracy exited the room before turning her eyes to Rebecca. “Hi!”
“Hi Ellie,” Rebecca said, sitting down in a chair next to her. “I’m Rebecca, I’m one of Natalie’s friends. Heard you’re our special guest today.”
Ellie blushed, suddenly shy. You settled in with your laptop as Rebecca slowly got her to warm up, putting together a puzzle from her backpack that Jake had packed.
The day passed quickly. Ellie was the hit of the office. All of the secretaries popped in to chat with her, as well as some of the younger associates.
After lunch — you had called in sandwiches, chips and sodas from the local deli and Tracy had eaten with you and Ellie in the conference room — there was a page on the conference table speakerphone.
“Ms. West?”
You leaned forward, pressing the green button. “Yes?”
“Patrick Donnovan wants to see you in his office.”
Shit. You pressed on the button again. “Tracy, can you come sit with Ellie please while I meet with Patrick?”
“Of course.”
Across the table, Ellie looked up from her iPad. You stood, smoothing your dress and grabbing a notebook and pen. “Ellie? I’m going to be right back, OK? Tracy is going to sit with you and then after this we can go home sweetheart.”
“OK!” You smiled and ran your hand over her hair softly as you walked out of the door that Tracy held open for you. Thank you, you mouthed and she gave you a tight lipped smile. You both knew what it meant to have a meeting with Patrick. He was exclusively the bearer of bad news.
Your legs wobbled a bit as you strutted down the hallway toward Patrick’s corner office. Before you had even raised your fist to the door, you heard his gruff voice. “Come in.”
“Patrick,” you said assertively, closing the door behind you.
He stood looking out the window and held out a hand toward the two plush leather chairs facing his desk. “Natlie. Take a seat, please.”
You were thankful he didn’t shake your hand. He would have found it sweaty and clammy and shaky all at once.
The silence was agonizing. Patrick had a pinched face, with a slightly crooked Owen Wilson nose, but offset by a dark mop of hair that you knew he had paid extra to get replaced in Turkey, hair plug capital of the world.
“So how can I help you, Patrick?” you asked. If it was going to happen, you needed to get it over with.
“Is that your kid out there?” he asked, tilting his head toward the hall.
You shook your head. “She’s my partner’s daughter. Her name is Ellie.”
He nodded. “Cute kid.”
“She is.”
Patrick paused and you jiggled your foot in your heel. Finally he sat down in his chair across the massive wooden desk. “So Natalie. Can I assume that things are serious if you’re bringing this little girl around?”
“Um.” You thought maybe your hearing wasn’t working. What the fuck was Patrick getting at. “Yes, I guess it is.”
“Well then, I thought it would be time for us to chat,” he said, leaning forward and pressing his meaty hands against the desk. “The team went out on a limb to hire you. Rebecca, too. I know you two are close. It’s cut throat here and the economy is down. We’re short staffed and we’re short on budget. I want to know if I can depend on you or not.”
“I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking.”
“I’m not asking anything, to be clear,” he said and the realization dawned on you. Legally he couldn’t ask if you were pregnant or planning to become pregnant. But he wanted to know if you were going to cost the firm maternity pay. “I’m just telling you that these next few fiscal quarters are not going to be easy ones. Just something to keep in mind.”
You stood up, the chair rocking behind you on its back two legs before plopping loudly to the ground. Patrick’s eyes grazed over your hips, up your chest until they met your own. “I know what you’re doing,” you said, voice low. “You can’t ask me if I plan to start a family, Patrick. You’re a lawyer, you should know better.”
“Natalie,” he said, holding up a hand. “I’m not asking. I’m just telling you that you’d be putting your career on hold if you did.”
Your fingers were already on the door handle. “Not your place to tell me, Patrick.”
Your breath was shaky as you walked down the hallway. You had to pause and catch your breath before you entered the conference room. The clock over the whiteboard said it was only two o’clock, but after that conversation, you didn’t care if it looked like you were leaving early. You no longer cared what Patrick, or any of the other partners, though.
“Ready to head out, sweetpea?” you asked. Ellie nodded feverishly and Tracy helped her pack up her sparkly backpack.
“Thank you,” Ellie said sweetly and Tracy smiled.
You held the door open and she rushed out into the hallway. Tracy turned to you. “Are you leaving for the day?”
You nodded. “Patrick knows why.”
Her frown spoke volumes. No one went up against Patrick Donnovan. It wasn’t going to end well.
***
Everything with Ellie went more smoothly than you had expected. Ellie was easy to get along with. Back at the townhouse, you let her watch some TV while you finished a few briefs and contracts. Still no text or call from Jake.
Any other day you would have tried to impress Jake by cooking a healthy meal for Ellie. But your fridge was empty save for a few bottles of wine, some carrot sticks and yogurt, almond milk, bread, and the last thing you needed was the hassle of going out again to buy groceries.
“How do you feel about pizza?” you asked and Ellie jumped up and down in little hops, demanding pepperoni.
The two of you settled down into the couch eating pepperoni pizza off of paper plates and drinking sparkling water while watching a movie. Outside, the sun slid down beneath the horizon. You kept your phone on the couch arm, ringer on, just in case.
Once the movie was over, you helped Ellie take a bath in your marble tub, letting her pick out a book to read before she went to sleep.
You turned on the nightlight in the bathroom and then pulled the covers up to her chest.
Ellie’s tiny hand reached out and grabbed yours. “Natalie?” Her voice was small and shaky.
You knelt down next to the bed, keeping her hand gripped in yours. “What is it, sweetie?”
“When is my daddy coming home?”
You sucked in a breath. “He’ll be home soon,” you whispered. “Do you miss him?”
She nodded and you reached out, smoothing the hair over the top of her head. “Me too,” you murmured.
Ellie’s green eyes searched yours.
“Here’s what we’ll do,” you whispered. “When your daddy gets home, I’ll have him wake you up, OK? So you can give him a big hug.”
She smiled, her eyelids fluttering closed. “OK.”
“Goodnight, honey.” You set her hand down gently, tucking the covers up around her before shutting the door most of the way, leaving it slightly ajar.
In the living room, you started to pace, your phone gripped tightly in your hand. The December darkness outside obscured your sense of time, until you finally felt a vibration from your phone, fumbling to swipe one finger across the screen.
“Hello?”
“Nat, it’s me.” Jake. You nearly collapsed in relief hearing his voice on the other end of the phone. Your knees gave out and you stumbled onto the plush ottoman. “We just docked. I can be there in thirty minutes.”
“Don’t rush,” you said, your voice crackling. “Drive safe. I’m just, fuck, I am so glad to hear your voice.”
“Baby,” he cooed and you felt a small tear slip out. “Honey, I’m on my way.”
Once you hung up, it hit you how worried you had been. Your flight or fight response had kicked in and your desire to take care of Ellie had surpassed any anxieties about Jake and the mission. But knowing that he was on his way, back on land, somehow opened the flood gates. He was safe.
Jake didn’t ring the door, instead sending a text and you tripped down the hallway, trying to be as quiet as possible as you flung open the door, crashing into him on the front porch. Jake’s arms immediately wrapped around your body, pulling you in closer, his lips trailing kisses across your head as you buried yourself against his chest. “Nat, sweetheart, I’m right here. Shh, I’m right here.”
You didn’t even realize you were crying on him until you pulled away and saw the dark wet spot on his green flight suit. “Shit, I’m sorry.”
He shook his head, running one thumb under your chin. “Don’t apologize.”
You pressed your hands to either side of your face. “Thank God you’re back.”
“How was she?” he asked softly. “Where is she?”
“Sleeping,” you replied. “She was perfect. But I promised that you’d wake her up when you got home. She misses you.”
He let out a sigh of relief. “Thank you for looking after her.”
Something about the way he said it flipped a switch in your brain. You pulled away. “Jake, I just have to know. What is this?” you asked. “What are we doing?”
“What do you mean?”
“What is this?” you demanded, crossing your arms. The relief of having Jake back on solid land was gone. It was replaced with anger at how he had left the situation. Dropping Ellie in your lap with no plan or instructions, wrongly assuming you had what it took to step seamlessly into their lives. What you had overheard him say to the dagger squad during dinner continued to pay rent in your mind. “Am I a babysitter? Am I your girlfriend? Where do you see this going? Because I am getting extremely mixed messages from you, Jake. And I can’t just be whatever you want me to be on a whim. I have a fucking career to think about!”
“Fucking Christ,” he muttered, running one hand through his hair. “Nat, I really can’t fucking do this right now. I haven’t slept in two days. I just want to see my daughter. Take a shower. Get some rest.”
A part of you registered that you hadn’t made his list of needs. “There’s always going to be a reason not to have this conversation,” you replied and he audibly groaned. “What?”
“I did not miss this,” he said sharply. “This is the worst fucking part about having a wife.”
“So I’m your wife now?” you said angrily. “Funny, I don’t remember a proposal.”
“What do you want me to say, Nat?” His voice was climbing and you were thankful the houses were far enough apart that you wouldn’t raise suspicion. “I don’t have my life together, OK? I’m a fucking mess. I don’t know what I’m doing, I’m just doing what I think is best. Today, going up again in those jets was the scariest fucking thing I’ve done in a year. Do you know what was going through my mind? That I might never see my daughter again. The literal love of my life. You have no idea what that’s like. She’s my entire fucking world. So I’m sorry if I don’t have a plan and I’m sorry that I can’t give you more right now. But she’s my priority.”
Tears slipped down your cheeks. You knew he was right. But that didn’t stop you from being jealous. And angry.
Were you ever going to feel like a priority in his life?
“I think you should wake up Ellie,” you whispered hoarsely. “And take her home.”
Jake nodded, jaw firm. “I think you’re right.”
You watched him go inside and you quickly brushed away the tears from your cheeks. Jake emerged a few minutes later, Ellie’s bags slung on his back and over one arm, carrying her on the other side, her tiny face lolling on his shoulder.
You helped him move her carseat into his truck, and watched as he gently lifted her into the seat, strapping her in carefully.
Jake moved to shut the door, but Ellie’s eyes fluttered open. “Natalie?”
You sniffled and stepped forward. “Yeah sweetie?”
“Thank you.”
Tears threatened to spill from behind your eyes. You simply gave her a tight smile and a small wave. “Goodnight pumpkin.”
Jake shut the door gently, and then turned to face you. “Nat.” There was longing in his voice.
You shook your head. It wasn't that easy. “Goodnight, Jake.”
He hung his head and you saw the exhaustion in his eyes. “Goodnight.”
You watched as he jogged around to the driver’s side, sliding in and starting up the truck, slipping down the driveway. Your eyes followed his rear lights as they disappeared around the bend of the street. It wasn’t until they were out of your line of sight that you let yourself collapse on the porch steps in tears.
A/N: My work travel schedule + holiday travel schedule (3 trips in the next 2 weeks) means Ch. 8 will probably be a little delayed, just FYI!

Beatrice gets home a bit later than she intended, the talking took a lot longer than they hoped it’d be. She huffed while balancing Nicole on her arm and pulling out her keys with the other, sliding it into the hole and looking around just to keep her eyes occupied as she moved the key.
While doing so, she saw Miranda, in the distance, watering her plants. She had never seen where she lived exactly, she just knew it was nearby. Her eyes narrowed and she pulled Nicole closer to her chest, pushing both of their bodies closer to the door and purposefully hiding herself from Miranda’s gaze if she dared to look over.
She was just messing around but Beatrice could see she was annoyed by such chores. She was ripping out geraniums that were still blooming and tossing dirt everywhere. Beatrice just kept her eyes on that scene, it was bothering her immensely because well, that was one of the things she liked to do and seeing someone being so disrespectful was- Eleanor’s sharp bark made Beatrice’s head snap forward.
The white dog was looking at her through the glass, wagging her tail slowly while whining in her throat. Beatrice checked to make sure Miranda hadn’t heard - it was at least five houses from each other, so the sound could reverberate - before slipping inside, “Sorry,Ellie.” she says, tossing the bag on the side table closest to the door while setting Nicole down so she could waddle towards Eleanor.
Beatrice rubbed her fingers, trying to peek at the house but she couldn’t see anything from that angle. She exhales quietly before backing away from the door, “It’s nothing.” she whispers, “It’s nothing.” and she turns to where Nicole was, “Well, at least that was dealt with, for now.”
The brunette stretched her arms over her head then immediately winced with both hands on her breasts, “Fffuck.” she was sore, her breasts were pulsating with pain and she gently massaged them in hopes to ease some of the discomfort, “Shit, this is…fuck.” the good news is that she had enough for her three babies…the bad news was that she had enough for her three babies.
Maybe she should call her mother and ask her what she could do about that.
After having something to drink, her throat was dry from talking. She walks up to the kitchen with Nicole following, Jolene was now next to her, guiding her to the kitchen as her mother fills up a glass of water. She’s about to bring it to her lips when her phone buzzes, “Who could it be–” she blinks once she pulls the phone out of her pocket, “Marcus?” and she immediately unlocks the call.
“Helloooo darling.”
“Marcus,hi.” she smiles, “Been a few days,huh?”
“Indeed, my darling. How have you been?”
"I've been busy, Marcus," she replied with a small chuckle. "Life with three little ones is quite the adventure. But it's been good, overall. How about you? How's everything on your end?"
There was a pause on the other end of the line, and Beatrice could almost picture Marcus taking a leisurely sip of tea as he often did during their conversations. "Ah, you know, the usual. Work, social events, a few new contacts and a dash of intrigue here and there. But enough about me, my dear. I wanted to check in on you. How are the twins doing? And how are you holding up?"
Beatrice leaned against the kitchen counter, watching Nicole play with Jolene on the floor. She smiled at the sight and replied, "The twins are doing well. Gavin and Aurora are growing stronger every day. And as for me, well, I'm hanging in there. It's a lot of work, but it's incredibly rewarding."
"I'm glad to hear that, my dear. You're doing an amazing job. I knew you'd be a fantastic mother."
Beatrice blushed at the compliment, "Thank you, Marcus. That means a lot. But um…is there a reason you called?”
“Yes,” another sip, “Whenever you are able I’d like you to come to the studio.”
“Oh?”
“I know it’s going to be hard now, so there’s no pressure, but I drew some lovely pieces for you and I need your opinion on it.”
Beatrice blinked, ‘...Marcus do you ever rest?’ she wasn’t being rude, she was genuinely worried for his well being, “It feels like ever since we met you work and only had one vacation…”
“Darling, I’m a fashion designer. My art flows in my veins.I cannot stop.”
“Well, but–”
“Besides!” she hears the sound of paper flipping “I can’t help that you, as my muse, has come to give me so much success. My brand is reaching higher grounds darling…and it’s because of that photoshoot. You are aware of that, yes?”
Her cheeks warmed up and she played with the end of her shirt, "I-I'm aware, Marcus," she replied with a soft sigh. "I'm thrilled that the photoshoot had such a positive impact on your career. Even if it was…terrifying at the time."
There was a thoughtful pause on Marcus's end of the line. "I know, my dear. But you must know, and remember, you did wonderful.”
"Thank you, Marcus. Your friendship means the world to me, and I'm genuinely happy for your success. I'd love to visit your studio and see your new creations.” she looks around a bit, “I just…can’t say when.”
“That is quite alright. I can send you a limo to pick you up when it happens.”
“...a limo? Marcus, there’s no need.”
“Perhaps, but I think it’d be fun, wouldn’t it? Your neighborhood would be thrilled!”
Considering everything that was going on…he was right. But she only gave him a nervous laugh as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, “W-Well…I-I’ll have to talk to Roos about that too, you know…he-he’s been helping around a lot too,so…he’d like to know when I do leave.”
She could just imagine the neighborhood's reaction to a luxury car arriving to pick her up. It would certainly be an event. Somehow that terrified her.
"Of course, my dear. Just let me know when you have a date in mind, and I'll make all the arrangements. Until then, take your time adjusting to your new routine with the little ones. Family comes first, after all."
Beatrice appreciated Marcus's understanding and flexibility. "Thank you, Marcus.”
“Do they need more clothes?”
“Uhhh, well,” she blinks, “...they…they are still in the NICU so, um, there’s no need for that now and Nikki is growing out of her clothes already,” cue to her daughter waddling about with her shorts appearing a little bit larger than the other ones she had, “Except for certain others, you know?”
“Oh…right, your twins are still there. I apologize darling.”
Beatrice hissed through her teeth, she didn’t want…pity, she is already suffering enough, but she also knew Marcus didn’t do it on purpose, “It’s okay,Marcus. Truly…I know you only mean well.”
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line before Marcus spoke again, his tone warm and comforting. "My dear, you are a remarkable woman. You've faced challenges with grace and resilience. I have no doubt that Gavin and Aurora will thrive under your loving care."
Beatrice felt her eyes welling up with tears at Marcus's words. She sniffles quietly, wiping her eyes before they dribble down her face "Thank you, Marcus," she said, her voice filled with emotion. "That means the world to me."
“My dear, you are most welcome.” she hears a voice in the distance, followed by Marcus replying in french, “Darling,I must go. Duty calls! But please, send me a few messages hm? If you can.”
"Of course, Marcus," Beatrice replied, her voice soft "Take care, and I'll be sure to send you updates. Stay safe." As she ended the call with Marcus, Beatrice sighed softly, returning to her glass of water as she recalls the conversation in her mind.
She looked around her cozy living room, where the soft glow of lamps filled the space with a warm and inviting ambiance. The twins were still in the NICU, and her heart ached for their presence, but she knew they were in the best possible hands.
Nicole was happily playing on her own, her laughter filling the room. Beatrice couldn't help but smile as she watched her daughter. Despite the challenges of motherhood, moments like these made it all worth it.
She clears her throat, sipping her water and then looking back towards the porch, noticing how the sky was still gray and cloudy, undoubtedly it’d rain again later. She sighs, clenching her eyes at the subtle pain on her chest as she slowly lies down on the couch, ‘I can close my eyes for a little bit.” and it’d stay like that, because her eyelids just dropped shut like iron doors, ‘...it’s fine.”
Her couch was so nice.
It was so nice.
She doesn’t notice when she falls asleep, one of her hands sliding out of the couch, touching Nicole as she sits not too far away from there, making sure to keep her hand on the toddler in case she needed anything.
As Beatrice dozed off on the cozy couch, the soft sounds of the living room filled the space. The rhythmic ticking of the wall clock provided a soothing background noise, and the gentle hum of the refrigerator added to the peaceful ambiance.
Unbeknownst to her, Nicole continued to play on the floor nearby. Her toys were scattered around her, and she seemed perfectly content exploring her little world. Every now and then, she would let out a happy gurgle or a tiny laugh, only looking up whenever one of the dogs was nearby.
Outside, the clouds continued to gather in the gray sky, promising another round of rain. The occasional distant rumble of thunder hinted at the approaching storm, but for the moment, all was calm within the four walls of Beatrice's home.
Nicole, however, looked up when she noticed a known car rolling into the garage. She immediately stopped what she was doing to rush to the window, Jolene with her, giving her a push so she could look outside and see her father.
Rooster watches as the garage door slowly comes down, sunglasses on and mouth in a thin line, then turns his head towards the window and his smile immediately appears, ‘Baby girl!” he coos from the outside, “Oh my gosh! It’s my baby girl!”
Nicole's face lit up with excitement as she recognized her father's voice. Her chubby little hands pressed against the window, her green eyes wide with anticipation. She bounced on her feet with pure delight, her baby babble making him chuckle from the outside.
Rooster just made his way to the door quickly and Nicole wasted no time in climbing out of the seat towards it. As soon as it opened, she let out a happy squeal and rushed into her father’s arms, “Hi!’ he coos, kissing her soft cheek, “Hi hi! You look so cute! Oh you are so cute! Hi baby girl!” he shuts the door with his foot, a gentle slam echoing through their home, “Where’s mama,hm?”
Nicole, still grinning, looked towards the living room. Rooster did the same and he winced in regret, “Shit.” he whispered, “Shouldn’t have done that, mama is asleep, huh?”
He carefully made his way into the living room, taking care to step lightly. The soft patter of rain against the windows added to the tranquility of the moment. Beatrice lay on the couch, her breathing steady as she slept peacefully. Her chest rose and fell in a gentle rhythm, hands tucked under the pillows.
Nicole squirmed in his arms, reaching out toward her mother. "Mama," she babbled, her voice a sweet melody in the quiet room.
Rooster smiled down at his daughter, understanding her desire to be close to Beatrice. He walked over to the couch and carefully sat down, letting Nicole snuggle against her mother's side. Beatrice stirred slightly but didn't wake.
He marveled at the sight of his two favorite girls, his heart swelling with love. The rain outside provided a soothing backdrop, creating a serene atmosphere.
Rooster whispered softly to Nicole, "Mama needs her rest, baby girl. Let's keep her company, okay?" Nicole, seemingly understanding, nestled closer to Beatrice, her eyes slowly drooping as she found comfort in their presence.
Rooster gazed at them, a sense of contentment washing over him. Despite the challenges and uncertainties that life had thrown their way, they were a family, and that was what truly mattered.
He reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair away from Beatrice's face, his touch tender and loving. She sighed softly in her sleep, a small smile gracing her lips.
Rooster leaned in and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. "I love you," he whispered, smiling when her lips quirked up even more, nuzzling her pillow. Rooster then leaned back on the couch, rubbing his face with both hands, grunting into his palms.
He was tired but he didn’t want to leave them alone. His whole body was aching, plus…well…he was repeating the conversation with Mav in his head.
Rooster had nodded, grateful for Mav's wisdom. There was only so much he could do after all and he and Beatrice had faced their fair share of challenges over the years, and they had always come through stronger on the other side.
But the weight of it all still pressed down on him. He couldn't help but worry about his wife's well-being, especially as she recovered from childbirth. And adding weird people into it? He thought they were done with that for a while now.
Rooster reached for his phone and sent a quick text message to Mav, thanking him for being there when he needed to talk. He knew he could count on his friend, just as he could count on Beatrice.
The rain outside continued to fall, a steady and soothing rhythm that seemed to echo the peace and contentment within their home. Thunder rolled above their heads, “Welp, looks like we aren’t going out tonight.” he mutters, “Shame, wanted to spend some time out of the house.”
But just as he was about to let his eyes drift shut, he noticed a subtle change in the room. Beatrice, his beloved wife, was beginning to stir. Her eyelids fluttered, and her fingers shifted beneath the pillows.
Rooster's heart skipped a beat as he watched her,Beatrice's eyes slowly opened, and for a moment, she seemed to gaze into the distance, her mind bridging the gap between dreams and reality. Then, her eyes focused, and she blinked a few times, adjusting to the dim light of the room.
Her gaze landed on Rooster, and a warm yet sleepy smile brightened her face. It was a smile that held years of love and shared moments, a smile that said more than words ever could.
"Hey there," Rooster whispered, his voice a gentle caress. "Sleep well?"
Beatrice nodded, her eyes still filled with sleepiness. She reached out and gently touched his cheek, her fingers warm and tender. "Mmm, what time is it?"
Rooster checked his phone, "It's still early," he replied. "And it's raining pretty heavily. Looks like we're staying in tonight."
Beatrice sighed softly, shifting on the couch to sit up. She glanced at their daughter, who was still peacefully sleeping. "How's Nicole?"
"She's right here with us," Rooster said, glancing down at their daughter. "We didn't want to wake you."
Beatrice smiled, “...kay.”
“You alright? How was the visit?”
“Fine…” she yawned, “We…talked a lot. Ev’s baby is fine…” she blinked heavily, “The twins…are getting better every day…”
His smile softened, “...baby, maybe you should go to bed?
Beatrice's eyelids felt heavy, and a yawn escaped her as she nodded. "Yeah," she murmured, her voice still laced with sleepiness. "I think I need some more rest. It's been a long day."
“Yeah…”
“You alright?”
“Me?”
“Yeah.” she pushes herself to her elbows, “You look…I dunno, worried.”
“Ah,” he tsks softly, gently playing with Nicole’s hair as she sits between the two, “It’s nothing gorgeous. Just had a talk with Mav…I’ll tell you later, okay?”

Extended credits for Museum at Tomorrow episode 5
Below the cut are all of the folks who I used (and asked to be credited) for recordings in Museum at Tomorrow episode 5- specifically, the "This is not for You" recordings.
(The list was too long for podcast episode descriptions)
These recordings were mixed into the soundscape of the show, heavily processed- so you may or may not be able to pick out your voice. Each unique recording is preserved as rhythem, timber, and shape within the episode.
Thank you for your work in creating the canvas of this piece.

My Girl [Chapter 4][Jake "Hangman" Seresin x OC]
Summary: Jake Seresin could be the answer to all of your dating woes. He’s the full package: steady job, mature, dependable, attractive to a fault. The polar opposite of every guy your age and he’s everything you’ve ever wanted in a partner. But there’s one roadblock: he’s a single father to four-year-old Ellie. Jake is looking for a level of commitment you’re not quite sure you’re ready to give, and he’s not willing to bring someone into his daughter’s life who isn’t there for the long haul. And even if you are stepmom material, is Jake ready to let someone back in his life while still mourning the recent loss of his late wife?
Pairing: Jake “Hangman” Seresin x OC [Lawyer Natalie West]
WC: 5.3K
Warning: Age gap, cursing, smut, mention of death
Series masterlist here
It had been ages since you’d had a nightmare. Not since law school, maybe. Or the night before the Bar Exam.
You still had yet to go inside of Jake’s house. He was waiting for a day when Ellie wasn’t around, or for once you had met her. You respected that it was her home and space and you didn’t want to invade that.
In the dream, the door was open and you walked right in. Every inch of wall space was covered by pictures of Jake and a woman with perfect skin, pearly white teeth, shiny hair. He looked happy in the photos.
Happier than he had ever been with you.
The further you walked into the house, the more the hallways stretched out and narrowed, never ending, like mirror walls of a fun house at a carnival. Sweat started to prick at the base of your neck, between your breasts, under your arms. The lighting dimmed the longer you stayed in the house until you were squinting with each step. But somehow, the photographs were bright without any background lighting. You could perfectly see Jake’s wife smiling out at you. If you looked closely, her eyes followed you as you continued, like the Mona Lisa.
Finally, the hallway came to an end and you saw a lone figure sitting at a table, their back to you. You reached out a manicured hand to their shoulder and they turned.
It was Jake’s wife.
She smiled and for a moment you were still from shock. But when you tried to move, you were frozen in place. She stood up, towering over you.
“Do you think you’ll ever be enough?” she asked quietly, her voice slicing through the air, the words dribbling down your own throat and making a home for themselves inside of you. You felt cold, and breathless. Her voice was calm. “For him? For her?”
And then you woke up.
***
“All the files should be on my desk,” you said into the phone, pacing in front of an airport Starbucks. “ICID, that Blackstone acquisition company, the Singapore trust. They’re all there.”
“I’m all over it,” Rebecca said and you could hear her nails clicking on her keyboard as she spoke. “Go enjoy your long weekend with your super hot boyfriend. And remember that I’m jealous and I like Pinot Noir.”
You laughed and spotted Jake standing patiently with the bags. “Got it. Alright, if anything urgent happens just text me.”
“It will and I won’t,” she replied.
You chuckled and ended the call, crossing the walkway area to Jake and touching his bicep lightly. “Sorry about that. You ready?”
He smiled softly and for the hundredth time you looked back in awe of how casually beautiful he was. “Everything good at work?”
You sighed and grabbed the suitcase from him, falling into step as you headed for your gate. “It’s chaotic, but to be expected. Becks will hold down the fort while I’m gone. Well, her and the rest of the team, but she’s the one I trust the most.”
Jake nodded and readjusted his grip on his shoulder bag. You hadn’t pegged him for a leather messenger type of guy, but he pulled it off so easily you didn’t blink an eye. “You deserve a weekend away.”
“I am so excited,” you replied and he gave you a brilliant grin. “I’ve never been to Napa before.”
“You’re going to love it,” Jake murmured into your hair as he bent down to kiss your temple.
Jake was right. You loved northern California.
You had spent so much time in San Diego, with its blistering sun and ridiculously tanned men in swim trunks at the grocery store that Napa was a significant change of pace.
Jake had booked tickets to the local airport and had a car waiting when you got off, directly on the tarmac. He looked relaxed behind the wheel of the Mercedes convertible sedan as the two of you whipped down quiet streets before pulling up to a gated resort.
And even though it hadn’t been discussed beforehand, it was pretty obvious what the weekend meant. It wasn’t just your first trip away together, or your first time in wine country.
It was very apparent the moment Jake slid the room key and opened the door to reveal the hotel suite and you walked in to see the massive king bed in the center of the room, staring back at you.
Jake settled both suitcases against the wall, and dropped his bag, holding his hand out for your purse. Once he locked the door, he wrapped his arms around you from behind where you stood at the massive floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the vineyard below. You leaned your head back against his broad chest, breathed in his comforting scent, felt his warm hands press softly against your stomach as he nuzzled your neck.
“I’m so happy we’re doing this,” he whispered into your neck before his lips glued themselves to your skin and you nearly forgot how to breathe, the desperate need to feel him all over you taking over the one brain cell your entire body had decided to share at that moment.
You turned around and threaded your fingers into his golden hair, watched his eyes linger on your lips as your hips shifted forward to meet his and you felt him, hard, against your pelvis. Jake let out a small whimper as you swiveled your hips from side to side, the fabric of your jeans skimming across his chinos. “Me too,” you said quietly, looking up at him with a shy smile.
Jake growled, one hand pressed tightly against your lower back, the other cupping your neck and pulling you in for a kiss. It was deep and warm, Jake’s tongue pushing into your mouth. There was an air of desperation, and when he pulled away you felt like panting.
“Shit,” he muttered quietly, running one hand through his hair. “We gotta get out of this room or else I’m never going to take my hands off of you.”
“What if I don’t want you to take your hands off of me,” you whispered and he groaned.
“Honey, you’re killing me. I want that, trust me. But you deserve the full Napa experience. Which starts with an amazing dinner in,” he looked down at his watch, “thirty minutes. So we should get ready.”
You nodded, bending over to unzip the suitcase and behind you Jake groaned again, causing you to laugh. “Look away!”
He tossed his hands up in the air. “Alright, alright. I’m going to take a quick shower. Saves me from the unbearableness of seeing you strip down to change.”
You gave him a smirk and he padded off to the bathroom. When he emerged ten minutes later, you slid past him carrying a dress and heels and a makeup bag. Jake’s fingers grazed your arm, sending a shiver down your spine.
“Holy shit,” Jake said, standing up from where he had been lounging on the edge of the bed, as you exited the large bathroom. “You look phenomenal.”
Giving him a smile, you turned around. “Can you zip me up please?”
Jake stepped forward, fingers coming out to grip the zipper of your green satin dress, pulling it up slowly, cinching in the tight fabric to your curves. You spun around, Jake’s eyes sliding over your body from your head, past the plunging dress neckline, down to your Jimmy Choo heels.
“Well?” You asked.
He shook his head. “No words.”
You laughed, reaching down for your clutch and then out for his hand. “Come on, then. I’m starving.”
He was perfect. So perfect, you wanted to look for red flags but you couldn’t find any.
Not when he wordlessly switched your entrees because he could tell you liked his more. Not when he ordered four desserts because you couldn’t choose. Not when you went to use the bathroom and he stood up politely as you left the table, something you had only ever seen gentlemen do in black and white movies.
There was nothing wrong with Jake as his warm fingers dug into your lower back guiding you into the car. Or when his lips brushed yours for a moment as he pinned you against the wall of the hotel archway near the side entrance as you walked up to your room.
It took everything in your power not to moan as he dipped his head and pressed his lips to the delicate skin beneath your ear, one hand curving around to grab your ass.
Jake pushed open the door to the hotel suite and gave you a soft smile.
You tossed your purse onto the heap of open luggage, noting that Jake’s pieces were carefully packed up while yours were strewn about. You wondered if that bothered him.
Sitting down on the desk chair, you pulled off your heels and set them gently next to Jake’s sneakers from earlier. He crossed the room and shoved his hands in his pockets, looking out of place. You could tell the wheels were churning in his head.
“Jake?” Your voice was light and his ears perked up. “Are you OK?”
He nodded. Part of you expected him to take a seat but he simply stood in the middle of the room, exuding a nervous energy. “Yeah, sweetheart, I am.”
You shook your head, standing up and running your hands down his arms, knotting your fingers together before looking up at his handsome face. “You’re nervous, aren’t you?”
He nodded again and you gave him a small smile.
“That’s OK. We can take it slow. Watch a movie if you want. Or maybe you can read to me from that boring book you brought.”
That made him laugh. You had jokingly mocked the tome he had opened up on the hour and a half flight, a literal Dickens novel. Jake let your fingers slide from his, reaching up and pushing the hair from your face. “You are so beautiful,” he murmured. “So absolutely beautiful.”
You pushed him lightly backwards until his knees hit the bed and he sat. You slotted in between his legs, and felt Jake’s hands come to your waist. Running your fingers through his hair, you bent down and whispered in his ear. “Unzip me please.” And then you spun around, pulled your curled hair out of the way and let Jake undo the zipper. When you turned back around, you pulled each strap down slowly, shimmying it over your hips and stepping out of the dress to reveal a lacy black bra and matching thong. Jake let out an audible grunt and he leaned forward automatically, grabbing your sides and pressing a kiss to the inch of abdomen above your underwear line.
Jake pulled you onto his lap, straddling him, and you felt how hard he was already as you pushed down against him. His lips were all over your collarbone and neck, and you tossed your head back, basking in how good it felt to be touched by him. Jake nudged the strap of your bra down on one side, freeing your breast and taking it in his mouth, sucking hard which caused you to moan, wetness pooling between your legs. His tongue flicked you over and over, the other hand grabbing your covered breast.
Before you realized it, he had undone the clasp of your bra and tossed it across the floor, alternating kisses across your chest, hands warm on your bare back as he pulled you in closer. “Jake,” you gasped against him and he pulled away, looking up at you. His eyes were feverish. Darkened with lust, his lips plump, that small degree of stubble burning your skin in the most unbelievably filthy way. “Please, I need you.”
Your fingers tugged at his shirt, undoing the buttons clumsily and he reached out to help, pulling his shirt off seamlessly to reveal his toned, golden abdomen. You rolled off him and onto the bed and watched as he stood, taking off his pants leaving just a pair of tight black boxer briefs. Even though you had seen him naked from the waist down before, his size, even covered by the briefs, made your eyes boggle.
Jake climbed up to where you laid on the bed, skimmed a hand lightly down your side, making you shiver. He leaned down and pressed his lips to just above your belly button, one hand flattened against your hip.
“Can I?” He whispered quietly and you looked down, unable to hear him clearly.
“What?”
“Can I eat you out?” He asked and you saw a blush creep onto his cheeks. It was so endearing from someone so attractive, his eagerness to please, his ability to embarrass.
“God, yes,” you muttered and in an instant, he was between your legs, pulling your panties off, leaving sloppy kisses up your thighs from your knees until you felt him wedge your legs apart. For a moment, he was silent, immobile. You looked down to see him staring at you, and when he raised his eyes to yours, you swear you saw a twinkle.
And then he leaned down and licked a pathway up your seam up to your clit and you had to stop yourself from crying out. Jake was on a mission between your legs and you had the fleeting thought that he must be very good at his real job if he was this detail oriented and thorough in bed. He needed zero instruction. Your back arched off the bed as he swirled his tongue over your clit, one thick finger probing at your entrance before slowly pushing in. It was a tight fit, and you heard him choke out a pained, “Fuck,” as you whimpered while he slowly pressed inside of you. “Yes, baby,” he murmured, “taking it so well. You’re such a good girl for me.”
You couldn’t stop the moans as he began to pump his finger expertly inside of you, curling the tip up just right as his tongue parted your folds and circled your clit. Jake added another finger, slowly, and you winced at the pain, but your hips bucked up against his face, practically begging for more. “God, Jake, yes, just like that,” you screamed as he pumped faster, the wet sloppy sounds of your desperation filling the room. Jake’s other hand held your hips down as your breath caught in your throat, white spots forming in your vision.
“Please, baby girl,” he muttered against your core. “Cum for me.”
That was all you needed to break around his fingers and across his mouth, a strangled cry ripped from your throat, your hips pressed up as Jake pumped his fingers diligently, tongue flicking against your swollen clit as you rode out your orgasm until it was too much, too sensitive, and he pulled away. His lips glistened and he wiped them before sitting on his knees between your legs, a small wet patch forming on his boxers where he was leaking precum, cock impossibly hard and straining against the fabric. Jake’s hands were warm on your legs, and he looked up.
“Are you OK?” he asked delicately and you nodded, chest heaving. “Your legs are shaking.”
You chuckled. “Stop bragging.”
He laughed and stroked his fingers down your thighs a few times, reassuringly. “But you’re alright?” he asked again and this time there was a vulnerability that hadn’t been there before.
“Jake,” you said quietly. “You’re amazing. Don’t worry about me, OK? I’m having a great time. Now come here.”
You held out your arms and Jake laid down next to you, his arm heavy across your chest. You reached out to kiss his lips, tasting yourself on him, one hand trailing down to touch him. He was hard, and he hissed when your fingers stroked him over the boxers.
“Take these off,” you murmured. He hooked a finger underneath the waistband of the underwear and pulled them down, freeing his cock and you could feel the hard, wet tip as it rubbed against your hip. “Tell me what you want, baby.”
“Want you,” he muttered against your shoulder, lips kissing across your skin.
“You have me,” you replied softly. Jake looked up, eyes dark and searching yours.
“I brought condoms if we want to use them.”
You nodded. “I got tested since my last partner, and I’m on the pill, but it’s up to you. I trust you.”
“Well you know my history,” he said quietly.
“I’m OK with it if you are,” you said. “I’d like to feel you.”
Jake grunted and you felt him roll on top of you, hands spread across your hip bones, one thumb grazing over your still swollen clit. You drew in a sharp breath and Jake grabbed his cock with one hand, pumping himself slowly as he looked down.
“Please, baby,” you whined below him. “Need you now.”
Jake slid the tip through your wet folds, moaning at the noise it made in the quiet room. You shifted, hiking your hips up in an angle, and felt the thick head of his cock push at your entrance. With a slow breath, Jake hitched forward, pushing himself inside. “Holy shit,” he groaned, inching deeper. He was thick and you hissed as he worked his way inside of you. “Fuck, Nat, you’re so tight. Feel so fucking good, Jesus.”
Jake was a whining mess by the time he bottomed out inside of you, holding himself up by his forearms, his head dipped low into your shoulder. You wrapped your legs around his waist, pulling him in deeper, and he swore under his breath before starting to roll his hips into you, setting a brutal pace, leaving you gasping beneath him. Almost immediately he hit that spot inside of you that made your insides coil and you let out a string of moans as Jake continued to thrust.
“God, I’m close,” he whispered, his voice ragged. “Where should I cum?”
You tightened your legs around his waist, crossing your ankles over each other on his lower back. “Inside of me.”
“Fuck.” Jake locked his eyes on yours, pushing himself up a little bit higher so he could watch as his thrusts made your breasts bounce. You felt his hips stutter a little, and knew his orgasm was approaching by the way he sloppily continued to fuck into you. “God, baby, yes, holy shit you feel so good, gonna make me cum.”
“Please, Jake,” you moaned, head tilted to the side and you heard Jake cry out as he spilled inside of you, shallowly pumping three more times before collapsing against your chest, sweat dampening the edges of his hair near his forehead. Slowly, he pulled out and you winced. He got up and returned from the bathroom with a warm wet cloth, cleaning between your legs, before returning to the bed, pulling you into his arms.
Your hand grabbed his neck as he reached down to kiss you. When you broke apart, you snuggled into Jake’s side, his arm slung around you, your hand on his chest, one leg tossed over his. “Doing OK, honey?” he asked.
“I should be asking you that,” you said softly. “Are you OK? I know it’s the first time since…” You trailed off.
Jake sucked in a deep breath. “It had to happen at some point. And I’m glad it was with you.” Jake looked down at you, one hand brushing over your hair softly. “You’re not a rebound, Natalie. I hope you know that. I’m serious about you.”
Despite the fact that it was what you wanted to hear, there was still a part of you that balked at his words. Somewhere, deep down, you were worried about getting tied up in something so serious, so quickly. But you swallowed it down and simply kissed the smooth skin of his bare chest, tightened your grip on him. “I’m glad.”
You fell asleep in Jake’s arms. He felt safer than anything you had ever known.
***
“I’d like you to meet my friends,” Jake blurted out. You froze, phone sitting on speaker on the kitchen counter as you ate pickles straight out of the jar.
“Um…”
“It’s Bob’s birthday tomorrow and we’re having a little party,” he added quickly and you heard that vulnerability creep into his voice again. “Nothing huge, just the team. They’re kind of my family now.” There was a lump in his throat, you could hear it even over the phone. “I’d really like for them to meet you.”
“Of course,” you murmured, closing the pickle jar. “What time?”
That’s how you found yourself standing on the doorstep of a small bungalow holding a birthday gift on Friday night.
You had called Jake earlier to apologize that you’d be late. A last minute contract error had sent the team spiraling, and you only had enough time to rush home and change and grab the gift from where you had left it in the entryway and speed to the address Jake had texted you.
You were still forty-five minutes late.
Your hand shook as you reached out and rang the doorbell, smoothing down the off the shoulder top you wore with a pair of jeans and chunky heels. Jake hadn’t specified a dress code.
The door swung open and a tall guy with a mustache answered. His mouth curved up into a smile. “Well hello there,” he drawled. “You must be Natalie.”
You nodded and he stepped back, opening the door wider and letting you in.
“Hangman wasn’t kidding,” he said as he shut the door. “You really are out of his league.”
You chuckled. “Sorry, I didn’t catch your name.”
He held out a large hand for a shake. “Rooster, but you can call me Bradley.”
“Bradley it is.”
He gave you a dazzling smile. “Everyone’s out back with the birthday boy. Follow me.”
Bradley led you down a narrow hallway toward the back of the house and as you entered the kitchen you could hear music playing outside. He slid open a pair of glass doors and called out into the yard where a small group was crowded around a few tables covered in food, string lights crossing low above the adjacent seating area.
“Hangman, get your ass over here or I’m going to steal your girlfriend!”
You laughed and watched Jake’s head swivel around from where he stood, a smile glued to his face as he dropped mid-conversation and quickly made his way toward you. He clapped Bradley on the shoulder. “Get your own girl, Bradshaw,” he said. He leaned down and pressed his lips to yours. “Hey honey.”
“Where should I put this?” You held out the gift. Jake took it from you and placed it on a nearby table before putting his hand on your lower back.
“I want to introduce you to everyone,” he said, nudging you forward toward the group. “Guys, this is Natalie.”
You looked around. There was Bradley smirking into a beer bottle. A cute dirty blond with glasses, a beautiful brunette in a simple blue dress, a tall black guy with ridiculously chilled cheekbones, one shorter guy with a buzz cut, another taller one with a mustache, and a few others milling around behind the main group. “Hi,” you said softly, raising a hand, feeling a blush creep up on your neck. “So sorry I’m late.”
The brunette gave you a once over before smiling. “I’m Phoenix, or Natasha, whatever you prefer.”
You smiled, Jake’s hand still warm on your back.
“I’m Coyote,” cheekbones said, stepping forward and kissing your cheek.
“Payback,” said the other mustache, holding out a hand for a shake.
“Fanboy.” Short buzzcut leaned forward and kissed your cheek as well.
“And this is the birthday boy,” Bradley said, placing his hand firmly on the shoulder of the guy with glasses, who blushed.
“Bob,” he said quietly and you stepped forward, giving him a hug. He put his arms around you awkwardly.
“Happy Birthday, Bob,” you replied, pulling away. “So sorry I’m so late, and crashing your party.”
He smiled softly and it was endearing. “No worries. Jake’s said a lot about you, we’re all very glad to have you here.”
“Oh you have, have you?” you murmured, looking up at Jake with a smirk. He smiled down at you.
“Of course I have,” he replied. “Now that you’re introduced, let me get you a drink. Wine?”
You nodded and he stepped away toward the house, edging open the sliding door.
Turning back to the team, you watched their eyes land on you. They were friendly, but you knew what an attack position looked like. Jake was their person, and you were the outsider.
“So, Natalie, Jake tells us you’re a lawyer,” Phoenix said. “How do you like it?”
You shrugged. “Even lawyers hate lawyers.” That got a few laughs and you watched the group soften slightly. “But it’s not all that bad. Except for nights like tonight when I actually want to get somewhere on time but of course, something has to come up.”
The team nodded.
“Jake doesn’t talk about his job much,” you said. “Are you all pilots?”
“Aviators, ma’am,” Payback corrected.
“Aviators,” you repeated.
“Ignore him,” Fanboy rolled his eyes. “It’s the same thing.”
“Is not!”
“We’re all at Top Gun together,” Phoenix added and from her tone you could tell she was a natural leader. “Have been for about six years now.”
“And you’re all instructors?”
The team shook their heads. “Jake’s the only instructor,” Phoenix said softly. “Been that way since Lizzie. He just couldn’t afford to leave Ellie alone for long periods of time, you know? This job, it’s not exactly family friendly.”
There was something in the way they all looked when she said it. You could tell the impact of her death was still fresh to them.
Jake emerged from the house and rejoined the group. You took the wine glass, thankful for the distraction.
“Mind if I steal her for a minute?” he asked and the team murmured agreements, Jake’s hand already steering you toward a tree with string lights near the edge of the fence. “Thanks for coming,” he whispered.
You leaned in for a kiss. “Thanks for inviting me. Sorry again that I’m late.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Jake replied, gazing over at the group. “They’re good people.”
“I can tell after five minutes that they care about you a lot,” you said. “I hope I don’t disappoint.”
Jake turned to you, one hand coming out to stroke your cheek. “Honey, you could never disappoint. They’re going to love you.”
As the night wore on, you got more comfortable. Jake held you in his lap as the team shared embarrassing stories from their years together. You laughed and clapped as Bob blew out the candles on his cake, Payback and Fanboy rushing to smush his face into the frosting much to his dismay. Everyone was nice and easy going, and you could see why Jake liked them so much. He was a more casual, confident version of himself around them. It felt like there were no secrets, that he could just be himself.
It was dark, and Jake had gone inside to check on the babysitter with Ellie, leaving you sitting next to the fire pit. There was a warm hand on your shoulder, and then Bradley appeared off to the side.
“Mind if I sit with you?”
“Please.”
He took a seat next to you, his handsome face glowing near the fire. Despite only knowing him for a few hours, the moments of silence before Bradley spoke again were not uncomfortable. “Did Hangman ever tell you that he and I used to be enemies?”
“Oh really?” you asked.
He chuckled. “That’s a strong word I guess. Maybe just say we didn’t get along. But yeah, we were kind of on the outs. And then there was a really big mission a few years back, right after Ellie was born.” Bradley took a sip of his drink before continuing. “One of those types of missions where we thought someone wasn’t coming home. And in the end, that someone was me.”
He stopped talking and you saw the pain across his face. You couldn’t help yourself — you reached out and laid one hand on his where it sat on the armrest of his chair.
“I was out of weapons with someone right on my ass. And for the first time, I seriously considered what it would be like to die.”
Your thumb brushed across his hand gently before giving him a squeeze and pulling away. Bradley smiled softly.
“They almost had me in lock, I saw the smoke from their guns headed toward me. And then there was Hangman. He came in from behind and took them out. Saved my life.” He looked up. “He risked everything to come out there and rescue me. Ellie was three weeks old at that point. He had so much to lose, way more than I did.”
“He never told me,” you whispered softly, looking out at where you could faintly see Jake pacing on the phone inside the house. “But that sounds like Jake.”
Bradley nodded. “He’s different now. Becoming a dad made him like that.” There was a pause. “She made him like that.” You knew he was talking about Lizzie.
“What was she like?” you asked, and you regretted it the moment it slipped out of your mouth. Jake didn’t tell you much about Lizzie on purpose. They were his memories. His remembrances. It was his choice to share those with you.
“Lizzie was great,” Bradley said softly. “Beautiful. Smart. Generous. Always let one of our drunk asses stay at their house when we got a little too loaded. She was the mother of our group, quite literally. She was good for him. He needed her.” He stopped and looked at you. “She needed him, too.”
You nodded. “I know I’m young,” you murmured. “You guys probably think I’m too young for him. But I really care about Jake. A lot. He means something to me.”
“Did he tell you I’m Ellie’s godfather?”
You shook your head.
“He asked me a few weeks after that mission I told you about. It’s something I take pretty seriously. That little girl, she’s my world, too. She’s really something.”
“The way he talks about her. She sounds magical.” Bradley’s face lit up. “I’m not a parent. But she is special. Makes me feel like I’m part of something that’s more than just myself.”
The two of you were silent for a moment. Maybe it was the wine, or the darkness that existed outside of the immediate proximity to the fire. Perhaps it was the fact that Bradley seemed like the kind of guy who wouldn’t hold something against you. Either way, you opened your mouth. “I’m scared,” you said quietly. “That I’m not ready to be someone’s step mom. I don’t know anything about kids. What if she doesn’t like me? What if she doesn’t trust me? Or worse, what if he doesn’t trust me with her?”
Bradley’s chocolatey eyes locked onto your own. “No one is going to replace her mom. All she needs is someone who loves her.”
He paused and looked up. Jake was edging open the sliding door. Your time with Bradley was rapidly coming to a close.
“That’s all he needs, too. Someone who loves him.” Bradley’s voice grew quiet. “Someone who is going to stick around.”

He could’ve just checked the cameras, but with the rain it was hard to see anything even in person. He stands by the kitchen’s doors, his eyes trying to see through the downpour as he rolls his tongue in his mouth, ‘Ellie,” the white dog looks up at him, “Did you hear something girl?” and she barks in response.
From all their dogs, Eleanor was the actual guard dog of the three. Her mother was chill and only barked when truly necessary, while Jack was a bit more of a scaredy cat and preferred to stay behind, watching everything unfold.
Rooster's grip on the doorknob tightened as he considered his next move. The rain continued to pour, a relentless drumming that masked any other sounds. He took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. Rooster had faced dangerous situations before. But this was different. This was their home, their sanctuary, and the safety of his family was his top priority.
With a determined nod, he pushed the kitchen doors open and stepped out onto the porch. Eleanor followed him, her growl low and menacing. The rain immediately soaked him, plastering his clothes to his skin, but he paid it no mind. He moved cautiously, his senses on high alert.
The darkness seemed to press in around him, and Rooster strained his eyes to pierce through it. The only illumination came from the soft glow of the porch light, which created a small circle of visibility.
Rooster's ears strained to catch any unusual sounds over the patter of raindrops. He heard the distant honking of cars, the rustle of leaves in the wind, but nothing that indicated a threat.
He continued to move along the edge of the garden, scanning the yard and the surrounding trees. It was a tranquil scene, one that should have been soothing, but the tension in the air was palpable.
Eleanor remained under the roof, choosing to remain dry, her senses finely tuned. Suddenly, she barked loudly, her hackles raised, and her teeth bared. Rooster's heart leaped into his throat as he spun in the direction she was facing.
In the dim light, he caught a glimpse of movement—a shadowy figure lurking near the edge of the yard. Rooster's instincts kicked into high gear. He didn't hesitate. He drew upon his training, moving swiftly and silently.
As he closed the distance, he couldn’t make out the shape of a person, it was just a blob of black. The rain continued to pour and Rooster's pulse thundered in his ears, but he remained focused.
"Hey!" he called out in a firm, commanding voice. "Identify yourself!"
There was a loud crash, which eventually made him jump under his skin followed by Eleanor’s violent barking. Soon enough he saw the culprit…a racoon. A big, fat raccoon hat was trying to dig into their trash cans. “...are you fuckin’ kidding me?”
He couldn't help but let out a relieved chuckle at the absurdity of the situation. Eleanor, however, didn't share his sense of humor. She continued to bark furiously at the raccoon, her protective instincts still in high gear.
"Alright, Ellie, calm down," Rooster said as he approached the scene. "It's just a raccoon, not a burglar."
Eleanor shot him a glare that clearly conveyed her disagreement with his assessment of the situation. Nevertheless, she slowly began to back away, the raccoon taking the opportunity to scurry away into the darkness.
Rooster shook his head, watching the raccoon's retreat. "Well, that was an adventure," he muttered to himself. And he felt bad for worrying Beatrice…a raccoon, of all things.
Inside the house, Beatrice was waiting anxiously, her expression a mix of concern and relief as she saw Rooster return, rubbing a towel that he got from the spare rooms downstairs so he doesn’t have a trail of water once he’s inside. "Roos, what happened?" she asked.
“Well,” he sighs, “We had an intruder, but it was small, fat and had tiny hands.” he smirks, “It was a raccoon.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, sorry about that gorgeous.” he says while drying his hair, “I didn’t want to worry you and I should’ve thought better.”
Beatrice couldn't help but laugh at the image of Rooster facing off against a mischievous raccoon in the pouring rain. "Well, that's certainly um...something," she remarked, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "I'm just glad it wasn't anything more serious."
Rooster grinned, shaking his head to rid himself of the last traces of raindrops. "Yeah, me too," he admitted, pulling off his shirt. "But I should have checked the cameras first before charging out there. My instincts got the better of me."
Beatrice approached him, her hand reaching up to cup his cool cheek. "It's okay, Roos," she said softly. "You were just trying to protect us. And it gave Eleanor a little excitement for the night, didn't it?"
Rooster chuckled, leaning into her touch. "Yeah, she's probably still on high alert, ready to defend us from any raccoon invasions."
They shared a warm smile, the tension of the moment completely dissipated. And he was immediately relieved by it.
As Rooster peeled off his wet clothes and changed into something dry, Beatrice fetched a fresh towel for him. Once he was comfortably dry, Rooster pulled Beatrice into his arms. She fit perfectly against him, her head resting against his chest. "Sorry for the scare, gorgeous," he murmured into her hair.
Beatrice sighed contentedly, her arms wrapping around him. "No need to apologize," she replied. "I know you'll always do whatever it takes to keep us safe. It's one of the things I love most about you."
“Hm,I’m honored.” he murmurs against her hair and she laughs, hugging his middle. “You feeling any better though?”
Beatrice hesitated for a moment, her fingers tracing absent patterns on the back of Rooster's shirt. "I do," she finally admitted, her voice soft and thoughtful. "Being in your arms always makes me feel better. And, well, the raccoon encounter certainly added a bit of excitement to the evening."
He knew she was trying her best and he loved her for it, kissing her forehead in comfort, ‘Nikki fell asleep?” she nods, still hugging him, “Only our daughter can sleep through such weather.”
‘Haha, yeah,” she says quietly, moving her eyes to where Eleanor was still looking outside, alert, fur raised on her spine, “...you think she’ll be like that the whole night?”
Rooster gazed out at Eleanor, who remained vigilant by the kitchen door, her white fur illuminated by the soft glow of the porch light. "She might be," he replied with a chuckle. “You know how she is. Once she's on duty, it takes a lot to distract her."
“Yeah…like a real security guard.”
Rooster nodded in agreement, his arms still wrapped around Beatrice. "She definitely takes her job seriously," he remarked. "But I'm sure she'll settle down once she's convinced there are no more raccoon threats."
They stood there for a while, the rain still falling steadily outside, but the tension of the earlier scare had evaporated. In its place was a sense of peace and contentment that often accompanied moments like these, when they found comfort in each other's arms.
Beatrice let out a contented sigh and looked up at Rooster. "I think we should get some sleep," she suggested. "It's been quite a night, and we've got a big day tomorrow."
Rooster nodded, agreeing with her assessment. "You're right, gorgeous," he said. "Sleep sounds like a wonderful idea."
They untangled themselves from each other and stood up,but Rooster stopped when Beatrice grabbed his hand to take him upstairs to their bedroom, “I’ll join you in a bit,” he smiles,I just gotta check some things.”
“More raccoons?”
He smirks, “I promise I won’t get out in the rain, this time.” and he winks, kissing her knuckles before giving her ass a gentle love tap, one that makes her squeal as she walks up the stairs, “I won’t take long.” he reassures her once she gives him a look, leaning against the banister and only moving once she felt right.
With Beatrice gone, his smile diminished briefly and he looked back towards his office…he had to check the cameras. They decided to keep the ‘main frame’ in his office so it’d be easier to check if they needed.
Rooster made his way to the office, his steps echoing softly on the hardwood floors of their home. The rain outside continued its rhythmic dance, providing a soothing backdrop to his thoughts. As he entered the office, the soft glow of the monitors greeted him, casting a soft light over the room.
He settled into the leather chair behind the desk, his fingers dancing across the keyboard to wake up the system. It hummed to life, displaying the various camera feeds from around their property.
The multiple screens flickered to life, revealing different angles of their property. There was the front, the driveway, and the garden. Rooster's trained eye scanned each feed, looking for any signs of unusual activity, one of his hands holding his chin up
Raindrops clung to the camera lenses, distorting the view somewhat, but Rooster was still able to make out the familiar surroundings. Everything seemed quiet and peaceful now, a stark contrast to the earlier excitement with the raccoon.
But he wanted to make sure, he went back a few minutes before Eleanor started barking furiously, waiting until the image loaded.
Rooster patiently rewound the feed, watching as the minutes ticked backward. The rain-slicked driveway and garden gradually transformed into their previous state. The night was still, and the only movement was the gentle swaying of branches in the wind.
Then, he spotted it. A shadowy figure across the street, just moments before Eleanor had started barking. Rooster's heart skipped a beat as he focused on the figure. It was hard to make out any distinct features in the low-resolution footage, but the person appeared to be wearing dark clothing.
Now, it could be a random passerby for all the knew, but he couldn’t help the obvious gut wrenching feeling that took over him. He didn’t like it how it stood there, in the rain, for a few seconds.
It also appeared to walk away when Eleanor started barking.
Rooster's instincts were on high alert as he continued to scrutinize the figure on the surveillance footage. The fact that the person had been standing there, seemingly watching their house, was deeply unsettling. What had drawn them to their property in the middle of the night, especially in such inclement weather?
His mind raced through various scenarios, each one more concerning than the last. He couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss, something beyond the innocent explanation of a passerby. The sudden departure when Eleanor had started barking only added to his unease.
Rooster leaned closer to the monitor, studying the figure's movements. It was challenging to make out any distinctive features, but the way they had lingered across the street and then retreated raised questions in his mind.
The uncertainty gnawed at him. Was this connected to the earlier incident with the raccoon, or was it something entirely different? Rooster knew he needed more information, more context, to understand what was happening.
He watched the figure for a few more moments, but they remained in the shadows, their intentions unclear. It was clear to him that he couldn't handle this situation alone. It was also clear he couldn’t just accuse someone for standing in the rain…there are crazy and weird people everywhere after all.
He didn’t want to alert Bea either…so he had one thing he should do.
-
“What?”
“I saw it Mav,” Bradley says, tapping his cup on the table as they have their lunch at the base, “Someone, stood there, under the heavy rain for a few seconds then only disappeared when Eleanor started barking.”
Maverick, who appeared calmer than Rooster was, just sipped his soda for a few seconds, “Alright, then what did you do?”
Bradley leaned forward, his hands gripping the edge of the mess hall table. He recounted the events of the previous night, starting with the encounter with the raccoon and leading up to the mysterious figure outside their home.
He asked questions, seeking clarity on specific points, such as the figure's appearance and behavior. Maverick knew that Bradley's account could provide crucial information for assessing the situation.
Once Bradley had described everything he had witnessed on the surveillance footage, Maverick took a moment to process the information. He glanced around the mess hall, ensuring their conversation remained confidential.
"Bradley, I need you to stay calm," Maverick said in a low, reassuring tone. "What you saw is certainly concerning, but we can't jump to conclusions. It could be a random incident or something more deliberate. We'll need to gather more information."
Bradley nodded, his expression tense but determined. "I understand that, Mav. But what should we do next?"
Maverick leaned back in his chair, considering their options. "First, we need to relax. Second," Maverick continued, "we're going to dig deeper into this. It's possible that this could be a one-time incident, but we can't take that chance."
“I mean, I don’t want to worry Bea,” he whispered, “She’s been going through it.”
“Honestly it could be a weirdo for all we care,” he shrugs, “Anything happened with the two of you that could’ve led to this?”
Rooster opened his mouth to speak, thinking about it, “Well…no?”
Maverick regarded Rooster with a thoughtful expression. "No recent conflicts, disagreements, or encounters that might have escalated?" he clarified, as if trying to draw out any detail, no matter how small, that might shed light on the situation.
Rooster scratched his chin, pondering the question. He couldn't recall any specific incidents that would have triggered such unusual attention. "Nothing I can think of," he replied, his brow furrowing. "We've been keeping to ourselves, focusing on Nikki and the twins, and there haven't been any disagreements or confrontations with neighbors or anyone else." he pauses, “Well there is this…Miranda, but she’s weird, nothing out of place.”
“Miranda,” Maverick repeats, “Tell me about her.”
Rooster leaned forward, his elbows resting on the mess hall table, as he began to describe Miranda, their somewhat eccentric neighbor. "Well," Rooster began, "Miranda lives a few houses down from us. She just…showed up out of nowhere and started acting weird, passive aggressive towards Bea."
Maverick listened intently, his mind processing this new information. "Has there been any recent interaction or dispute with Miranda that might have triggered her interest in your property?"
Rooster thought for a moment, trying to recall any encounters with their neighbor. "I mean she just showed up outta nowhere,Mav…I don’t know how that helps.” he shrugs, “We know nothing of that woman besides that she’s a Navy wife - you know the type - and that she is weirdly friendly towards Bea.”
"Hmmm...This whole situation is unsettling, and Miranda's behavior doesn't help. But let's remember to stay level-headed. We can't jump to conclusions."
Rooster leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "I know, Mav. It's just... I can't help but wonder if she might be somehow connected to all of this. I mean, she's the only new variable in the equation."
"It's natural to consider all possibilities," he said, "but we need evidence to support any theory. Right now, we have no concrete reason to suspect Miranda other than the timing of her arrival."
Rooster let out a frustrated sigh. "I know you're right, Mav. It's just hard not to feel paranoid about everything, especially when it involves the safety of my family."
“Just give it more time, maybe this was a one time only occurrence.” he says, sipping more of his soda, “By the way, is Bea home?”
“Uh,no,she’s at the hospital visiting the twins and Evelyn, she just gave birth and she wanted to be there for her.”
Maverick nodded in approval. "Sounds good and don’t worry, we'll leave no stone unturned, and we'll find out what's really going on. In the meantime, let's keep in close contact with Bea, make sure she feels safe, and stay vigilant."
“Yeah,”Rooster says softly, ‘Yeah, you are right.”
“I mean, the worst thing is that this Miranda is jealous of your garden.” he smirks, “Nothing more, you’ll see. It’ll all be resolved soon.”
