Uhh Australia is not 90% White. That’s way offbase I’m sorry. It’s probably closer to about 65-70% but it’s harder to determine since we don’t strictly note race in any census. We note ethnicity which is why I referred to it above.
In cities, the most important part of the referendum because they make up most of the states’ voting population (and you need a majority of states to win a referendum) this percentage drops even further. Again hard to determine exactly, but the percentage of White peoples in Sydney is something like 55%. And guess where a large portion of White Australians live in Sydney? In the aforementioned purple section. The ones who actually voted yes. The reason they voted Yes isn’t necessarily because they have White Guilt (though I’m sure it’s part of it) but because White Australians tend to be more educated at the tertiary level. This means that they actually learned about Australian settler colonialism without any whitewashing.
If that’s not enough, Sydney and Melbourne which combined are about 45% of the country’s entire population, are two of the worlds most diverse cities. The former has the third largest foreign-born population in the world and the latter has the fifth-largest foreign-born population. So yes, I do think there’s some reason to consider this population an important demographic.
Furthermore, Western Sydney electorates are considered our own version of “swing states” because of how important they are in elections. It’s not a majority white part of the city (with 2.6 million people alone). As anyone who has ever stepped foot in Western Sydney would know.
The point of this is my entire comment was that this is ignored demographic by leftists because it’s convenient, Ignoring around 30-35% of your voting base is stupid. Im not saying this was the deciding factor but it was a major one.
Further reading on the importance of Western Sydney in elections:
https://amp.abc.net.au/article/102855090
An excerpt: Migrant and culturally diverse communities, [No] campaigners said, are key to their success.
The No campaign knew that this population is overwhelmingly socially conservative and has considerable electoral power. The Yes campaign was hesitant to admit that.
Also as the article highlights, the massive cost of living crisis is hitting the working-class immigrant population the hardest. Having a referendum when the homeless rate and food insecurity has never been higher was a massive miscalculation. As much as I desperately wanted the Referendum to succeed, I think it not being delayed until unemployment and inflation had decreased enough was not the right move. It's why the No Vote was as high as it was (60%) whereas earlier in the year it was estimated it would have been closer to an even split.
the fact that indigenous people of australia are being treated as lesser at a political level in their own native country and this continues to be the case bc their colonisers don’t want that to change is disheartening.
#Australia#voice referendum#and this is why simplifying the matter is stupid#if No campaigners knew and exploited the significance of the immigrant population#then i think we can admit to it significance too#and i think you need to do double check your reading on this#no city barring canberra “voted yes”#which is actually overwhelmingly white#around 80%#because its filled with educated government employees#i hesitate to say any city voted yes or no because theres a kajillion electorates in each#radly

The Immortal Consultant
Year 5186
All I want is a peaceful existence where I am left alone. I'm the last immortal, and I'm fine with that. I've been around so long, and people never change. The toys do, so that's interesting.
About 50 years ago some government researchers found me. They were super excited because they could ask me all the stuff they couldn't figure out themselves. Having perfect recall certainly comes in handy sometimes. Yes, I know how the political systems of this or that ancient culture worked. Yes, I can tell them exactly how many deities some other ancient culture worshiped. No, they aren't reading that stone tablet correctly.
We have an agreement. I do not offer anything without being asked, and they only come to me with things they absolutely can't figure out on their own. And they pay me. It's a pretty sweet deal, actually. Better than some things I've had to do over the years. They don't bother me too frequently, and the money keeps me from having to get a day job.
Usually the researchers come to me with pretty boring stuff, but today… Today I hit the jackpot. Earlier this morning an archeotechnologist came to me with a printout. It was everything they had on this ancient movie from around the turn of the 21st century that had apparently had great cultural influence and had shaped a generation. The problem is they can't find a copy no matter how much they search the old tech, and what they have on it is incredibly limited, so they wanted me to fill in the gaps.
I admit I was a bit curious about what movie it could be. It couldn't have been Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, or even Titanic since those are well documented, and through splicing the good parts of old partially corrupt files together we even have whole copies of the films that are used to teach entertainment history.
The archeotechologist handed me the printout, and I have never felt such elation in my very long life. I felt my eyes widen, and my heart falter for a half second before beating faster. I couldn't stop myself from grinning like a mad man as I stared at the very official document that held all the known information on the film Goncharov.
I must have talked for hours about the film, its plot, characters, themes, soundtrack… everything. Back in the day some would have called me a nerd for the amount of passion I poured into telling this government employee about every single detail I could remember of this movie. Every detail that is, except the most important one.
As I watch the man leave now, I still can't wipe the grin from my face knowing that Goncharov will soon be featured in history journals, and taught in higher education courses. No one but me will know that it never really existed.

Crafting a Greener Future to Houston's Hospitality Industry
In the middle of Texas Houston's hospitality sector is at a crucial point, facing the urgent and ever-changing issue of sustainability. As the world shifts towards green practices, Houston's hotels, restaurants and venues for events are changing their strategies to reflect a more sustainable future. This change is not merely a trend but a necessary evolution, reflecting a global shift in values for consumers and an increased awareness of the environment.
The Present Landscape and the Green Awakening
Houston, known for its energy-rich industry is often portrayed as a city less attuned to environmental issues. However, this image is rapidly changing. The city's hospitality industry is beginning to realize that sustainability isn't just an ethical requirement, but a business one. The majority of consumers, particularly Gen X and millennials Gen Z, are increasingly preferring businesses that focus on the planet. This shift in the preferences of consumers is a clarion call for Houston's hospitality industry to be innovative and evolve.
Sustainable Practices are Taking Root
In the forefront, a number of Houston hotels have begun to implement environmentally friendly measures. From implementing energy-efficient heating and lighting systems to adopting water conservation practices and more, these establishments are setting new standards. Certain restaurants have adopted farming-to-table practices, using local suppliers and reducing their carbon footprint. Meanwhile, others are minimizing the amount of waste they produce by recycling and composting as well as growing herbs and vegetables in on-site gardens.
Technologies as Catalyst to Change
Technology plays a crucial role in this green revolution. Smart construction systems and IoT devices allow for more efficient management of resources. Digital platforms are enhancing the guests' experience while also decreasing the amount of paper. Furthermore, apps that track food waste and energy consumption help businesses make more informed choices, and strike an equilibrium between profit and environmental sustainability.
The Community and the Collaboration: The Future
The road to a cleaner future is not a solo venture. It requires collaboration among the various players in the industry, local governments and the local community. Initiatives like the Houston Green Office Challenge and collaboration with environmental groups help to promote a culture of sustainability. Collaborations with environmental organizations are vital in sharing top practices, resources and establishing a united, city-wide approach to sustainability.
Education and Training: Equipping the Workforce
An essential aspect of this transition is educating and training employees in sustainable methods. Workshops, seminars, and training courses are crucial to equip employees with the skills and knowledge to implement and maintain green initiatives. This does not just improve operational efficiency, but also increases the morale of employees, since they become active participants in a meaningful cause.
A Economic Case for Sustainable Development
Green living isn't just good for the planet; it's good for business. Sustainable practices typically result in cost savings in the long-term through a reduction in energy and water consumption. Additionally, green businesses attract an increased number of customers and are able to command premium prices because consumers are more likely to pay more for environmentally-friendly services.
Conclusion A Vision for a Greener Houston
As Houston's hospitality industry embarks on this green journey it is at the forefront of a worldwide movement. By embracing sustainability, it's not just contributing to a healthier planet but creating a new standard for the industry worldwide. The path to a greener future is filled with challenges, but with innovation, collaboration and a dedication toward sustainability, Houston's hotel industry could become a shining example of sustainable environmental management.

Well, yes, but if you're willing to work at lower-paid job in those fields (CNA, various social/human services jobs, teacher assistants) while going to school, you can get those higher degrees and avoid a boatload of debt. It takes longer but you also get your foot majorly in the door AND get an idea of what those jobs really entail. Not for everyone and yes, the government SHOULD make it easier for these vital roles to be filled across the board and not hope for a patchwork of grants and employee-funded education and yes, the whole law enforcement part is maddening (because if any field could benefit from its members having more skin in the game, more education, plus a few more life years under their belts before starting it's LE). #AndMaybeAddMentalHealthProfessionalsInThereToo #AlongWithTheLibrarians

Impact of Visa Rule Changes on Local Businesses
Given its advantageous location, superior infrastructure, and business-friendly regulations, Dubai has long been a magnet for entrepreneurs and companies from all over the world. Like any growing metropolis, Dubai's administration does, however, occasionally adjust its immigration policies, which can have a big impact on regional firms.
Local firms must concentrate on developing and upskilling their current personnel in order to overcome this barrier. In addition to filling skill gaps, investing in employee development programmes can increase employee retention. Additionally, businesses can partner with nearby educational institutions to develop a pipeline of qualified graduates prepared to enter the workforce. Visa rule changes may also influence foreign investors' decisions to establish or expand their businesses in Dubai. visa requirements could potential investors who may perceive the process as complex and time-consuming. As a result, local businesses may face a reduced influx of foreign direct investment, potentially impacting the economy and overall business climate. To counter this, the government and local business associations should actively promote the ease of doing business in Dubai. Offering incentives, streamlined procedures, and comprehensive support for foreign investors can help maintain Dubai's appeal as an attractive investment destination. By showcasing success stories of businesses that have thrived in the region, confidence in Dubai's business environment can be bolstered.
Every economy relies heavily on SMEs, and Dubai is no exception. These smaller businesses with little resources may be disproportionately affected by changes to the Visa rules and may find it difficult to comply with the new regulations. For instance, they can have trouble extending their operations into new markets or sponsoring visas for foreign staff. The government may take into account introducing flexible visa options designed expressly to meet the requirements of smaller firms in order to encourage SMEs. The entry hurdles for international entrepreneurs can be lowered by providing temporary visas or entrepreneur-friendly visa categories. Additionally, developing mentorship programmes and encouraging public-private collaborations can give SMEs the support and tools they need to successfully manage regulatory changes. Changes to visa regulations could result in higher operating costs for Dubai enterprises. Additional administrative costs, such as engaging legal counsel or specialised HR staff to manage visa-related issues, may be required to comply with new laws. Additionally, firms can have longer visa application processing periods, which could cause project dates to fall. Businesses can simplify internal operations and adopt digital technologies to reduce expenses by streamlining administrative tasks. Businesses can concentrate on their core strengths and preserve profit margins by outsourcing some non-essential services because it might be cost-effective to do so.
Changes to visa regulations are a natural consequence of regulatory evolution in a vibrant and evolving economic hub like Dubai. While these changes could be difficult, they also give local businesses a chance to adapt and develop. Local businesses can not only weather the effects of changes to visa rules but also position themselves for lasting growth and success in Dubai's ever-evolving market by investing in talent development, promoting business-friendly legislation, helping SMEs, and optimising internal processes. Ultimately, businesses might prosper despite shifting visa requirements and support Dubai's future economic success by taking a proactive and adaptable attitude. its easy to consult a business setup services in Duabi for fast procesess.

Homework 7
This chapter focuses on the importance of productivity as a part of growth in GDP, the somewhat obvious idea that you can't consume something that was never produced. Because of that, consumption is tied directly to productivity. How does that concept support national subsidies in education and health? How about infrastructure? How should we choose the appropriate subsidy for activities that improve productivity? (Think about costs and benefits in your answer -- who pays and who benefits?)
The GDP measures the monetary value of final goods and services. The GDP is related directly with productivity, if consumers start getting more of an specific good that increased directly to their demand and productivity.
If the government give more subsidies health and education that would increase their condition of living and will be more stable to consume more of the market products. This would end up by increasing the demand of the product and increasing their productivity. Plus, population with good health and well prepared help to produce more products and they are capable to run better businesses that will help economy of the country.
If infrastructure development starts that would make productivity to increase. Also companies could be attracted to the project and invest which would be beneficial for the economy growth.
If government provides subsidies to all the population in general that would be a problem like we see it everyday in USA, people filling for unemployment just because its more comfortable. I think we should focus on the poor societies, people who really doesn’t have ways to access to education and health benefits. If help to people who have less (which is a big population as well) we will get people now with more access to demand products and health enough to work. All that would increase productivity.
There are only two ways to get more economic growth - more output per unit of resource (productivity increases) or use more resources (employees in this case). More employees means population growth, frequently a "hot topic". What are the negatives associated with additional population growth? What are the positives? (In terms of growth in GDP). Where do you fall in the discussion? Why? Should we subsidize parents (there are current discussions in Congress around this)? Why or why not? (All population growth at this time is coming from immigration, total fertility is negative. Immigration is of course well below historical levels.)
If the a country have an increase on the population that would mean more productivity and more demand of products and food and services like education and health. That would also mean less accessibility to large amount of income. Is not beneficial for a country to have their population increased because sooner than later the country wont be able to provide to everybody and that will incur in poorness societies.
I think we should subsidize parents but focused on parents of the poorest societies in the country, have requirements for them to apply for governments help. If country starts subsidizing every single parent then that would become a problem for country’s economy. The truth is that USA economy can’t afford right now to bring help to every citizen in this country.

Philippines and the Low Wages Of its Employees
Recruitment and employee costs are among the most significant business expenses. Fortunately, outsourcing to the Philippines offers business owners significant cost-saving advantages in those sectors.
It is no secret that most firms have made cost-cutting their primary focus in order to keep a presence in a market that is always expanding and competitive.
With so many costs associated with running the business, it is understandable that financial constraints frequently limit the scope of expansion plans or growth initiatives. A few changes, such as budget reductions or abandoned plans, will be made in a few departments.
Offshoring is frequently used by enterprises as a cost-saving measure in industrialized nations. Companies can reduce their overall operating expenses by shifting some jobs or operations to regions with cheaper labor prices. It can benefit businesses in a number of ways, including by lowering the amount they spend on employee pay and benefits and freeing up resources that owners can use in other areas of the company.
In order for offshore to be a useful tool for cost-cutting measures, enterprises must collaborate with firms in nations with low costs of living and average employee salaries below the global average. One of those realistic choices is the Philippines.
The Philippines is one of the nations with the lowest average wages.
A large portion of the population in the Philippines speaks English fluently and has a good education. These factors make it simple for businesses to locate qualified personnel to manage their initiatives. In addition, the government encourages offshoring and has developed incentives and programs to draw businesses to the nation.
The Philippines is a good location for offshore because of all these features. Offshore in the Philippines is a solution that businesses globally collectively employ to maintain competitive growth and development, which is why the nation is an offshoring refuge befitting of the moniker "BPO Capital of the World."
When working with outsourcing companies in the Philippines, businesses are already aware that they will receive high-quality labor and operational support. The cost savings on BPO employee salaries, however, continue to be the key lure for companies of all sizes and shapes to the Pearl of the Orient Seas.
youtube
Why the Philippines is a Top Choice for Offshoring
he average employee pay in the Philippines is much lower than in industrialized nations like the US, the UK, Australia, and Japan.
The top outsourced jobs in the Philippines as compared to the business-friendly nations are broken down in the following comparisons:
The average earnings in the Philippines and the four developing nations are vastly different. Even when filling executive-level positions, corporations from the four countries can save 60% to 80% by outsourcing those roles to the Philippines.
The Philippines is an attractive offshoring destination due to its low labor costs. In addition to reduced employee expenses and technological advancements, companies flocked to the country for offshoring.
Salary Averages: Why are they so low?
There are many foreign business owners who are concerned about unfair labor practices and employee treatment because of the low average salary. There is, however, no need to worry. Despite the significantly lower salary average, offshoring firms do not underpay their workers. Local workers and foreign clients both benefit from this scenario.

Moms for Liberty, founded in Florida, has been identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center as an extremist group.
Moms for Liberty
Moms for Liberty is an antigovernment organization founded in 2021 by former Florida school board members, Tiffany Justice and Tina Descovich. Current Sarasota County, Florida school board member, Bridget Ziegler, was also a co-founder. She has since left the group, leaving Justice and Descovich at the helm. Moms for Liberty and its nationwide chapters combat what they consider the “woke indoctrination” of children by advocating for book bans in school libraries and endorsing candidates for public office that align with the group's views. They also use their multiple social media platforms to target teachers and school officials, advocate for the abolition of the Department of Education, advance a conspiracy propaganda, and spread hateful imagery and rhetoric against the LGBTQ community.
You can tell a lot about them by the people they associate with.
In July 2022, Moms for Liberty held its first national summit in Tampa, Florida. Speakers included Dr. Ben Carson, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and his wife and Betsy DeVos, former US Secretary of Education. [ ... ] Marriott International, which openly supports the LGBTQ community and its causes, received criticism for hosting the summit because of Moms for Liberty’s openly anti-LGBTQ stance, as well as those of the speakers included on the program, including Ron DeSantis, who had recently signed Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill into law, which the group publicly lobbied in favor of.
They hate public schools. But instead of just homeschooling their own kids they want to bully the schools into brainwashing all kids with GOP far right ideology.
Despite the background of its founding members serving on various boards of education, Moms for Liberty has taken a stance that is firmly anti-public school. Tiffany Justice explained in an interview that because public schools are funded by the government, they are government schools. “So, if you don't go to private school, you’re going to a government school. And then you have these employees who have to have a state certificate working at these government schools or government employees.”
Did I mention that they are extremist homophobes?
Moms for Liberty Miami-Dade County member, Crystal Alonso also suggested moving LGBTQ students to separate classrooms, comparing them to students with special needs, saying, “for example children with autism, Down Syndrome, they have to have special IP meetings with a counselor, they have to be put into separate classrooms. I understand, because it’s a different type of education for children with those disabilities, but I think that for children that identify differently, there should also be like a specialized… something for them, so that they feel that they’re important enough that they’re being counseled.” Moms for Liberty’s stance against gender identity and LGBTQ rights has continuously increased and begun to expand outside of its original public-school focus.
This group must be publicly denounced for the far right bigotry which they are trying to proselytize.
This is just another manifestation of the loony right whose votes Trump and DeSantis are competing for.
These are among the hate-filled neo-fascist crazies who would have a strong influence on public policy in a DeSantis or a Trump-2 administration.

A day in the Life of Sue Republican Sue gets up at 6 a.m. and fills her coffeepot with water to prepare her morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With her first swallow of coffee, she takes her daily medication. Her medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised. All but $10 of her medications are paid for by her employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Sue gets it too. She prepares her morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Sue's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry. In the shower, Sue reaches for her shampoo. Her bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for her right to know what she was putting on her body and how much it contained. Sue dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air she breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. She walks to the subway station for her government-subsidized ride to work. It saves her considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor. Sue begins her work day. She has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Sue's employer pays these standards because Sue's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Sue is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, she'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think she should lose her home because of her temporary misfortune. Its noon and Sue needs to make a bank deposit so she can pay some bills. Sue's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Sue's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression. Sue has to pay her Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and her below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Sue and the government would be better off if she was educated and earned more money over her lifetime. Sue is home from work. She plans to visit her father this evening at his farm home in the country. She gets in her car for the drive. Her car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards. She arrives at her childhood home. Her generation was the third to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification. She is happy to see her father, who is now retired. Her father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Sue wouldn't have to. Sue gets back in her car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Sue enjoys throughout her day. Sue agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm self-made and believe everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have". ~ Kathy Joe North

It's noon and Sue needs to make a bank deposit so she can pay some bills.
After all, I'm self-made and believe everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

Paygo, false consciousness and the IRS
John Steinbeck diagnosed an important American pathology in 1966 when he called the US a nation of “temporarily embarrassed capitalists” — people who see themselves as the wealthy-in-waiting and therefore fight policies that reduce the power that comes from wealth.
It’s a restatement of Engels’ idea of “false consciousness,” and it’s the result of a deliberate strategy on the part of wealthy people — many of whom believe that they were literally genetically destined to be wealthy — to convince the rest of us that “anyone can succeed.”
Part of the false consciousness program is the money story that goes like this: the US government takes away “taxpayers’ money” from “makers” to fund “programs,” the bulk of which go to the “lazy takers,” who experience the “moral hazard” of subsidized unemployment.
But of course, that’s not how money works. Money originates with the federal government (and its fiscal agents, the banks). In order for the public to have money to pay off its tax liabilities, the government must first spend that money into existence.
The IRS doesn’t take our tax dollars, pile them up, and give them to Congress to spend on programs. When the IRS taxes our money, they annihilate it, removing it from circulation. When Congress spends, new money comes into existence.
The US government can’t run out of money any more than Apple can run out of Itunes gift cards. It can spend too much money — so much that prices go up because too many dollars are chasing too few goods — but it can’t run out of money.
Fed spending is constrained by resources (what’s for sale in dollars) not money (how many dollars there are). If the ratio of dollars to resources gets out of whack, there’s a risk of inflation.
There are many ways to fix this ratio. For example, the government usually issues T-bills (savings bonds) whenever it spends more than it taxes. When you buy a T-bill, you take dollars that might circulate around the economy, chasing goods and labor, and you sequester them.
A T-bill is just a dollar you’re not allowed to spend. In exchange for surrendering the right to spend your dollars for 1, 5, 10 or more years, the government offers you interest, trickling out that money over a long period.
That way the government can buy things today without bidding against your dollars.
But that’s not the only way to fight inflation while spending new money into existence. The other major way is taxation: simply removing money from the economy and annihilating it.
Taxation fights inflation. When the government runs a deficit, that means that it created more money this year via spending than it destroyed via taxes. The “government deficit” is the “public surplus” — the money left in the economy for all of us to spend on stuff.
Likewise, when the government runs a “surplus” that means it taxes more money out of existence than it spends into existence. In a year where the government runs a surplus, it means that the power of the private sector — you and me — to buy stuff has decreased overall.
This is fine if there was too much money to begin with — if inflation was kicking off — but if there’s not enough money in circulation (e.g. if there’s a recession), it just makes things worse…but not for everyone.
When the economy is starved of money, banks go to work creating new money through loans. These loans pay interest (to rich people like bank shareholders and people who securitize and buy debt).
That’s the one-two punch of spending cuts during a downturn:
I. The real economy is starved of the capital it needs to pay workers and make things for workers to buy;
II. The financial economy grows as desperate real-economy firms borrow from banks to keep the lights on.
Despite all their talk of “spending taxpayers’ money,” the wealthy understand how money works. That’s why they were totally indifferent to the running $1t/year deficits created by the Trump tax-cuts (and likewise about the Obama finance bailouts).
Giving money to rich people causes asset-bubbles (driving up the prices of houses), but not inflation (a sustained rise in the price of all goods). That’s because rich people can’t buy enough stuff (fridges, cars, oranges) to drive up prices.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/08/howard-dino/#payfors
After you’ve bought three houses and three SubZero fridges and filled them with the beef of three Kobe cows and three cases of Moet, there’s still a LOT left over (even if you’re Jeff Bezos and buy a superyacht with its own, smaller superyacht).
Those leftovers go to socially useless things, like buying houses to turn into rent-generating slums (Wall Street is fast becoming America’s biggest landlord, and single family homes are sold for cash to investment funds instead of families).
And they go to influence campaigns designed to make regular people defend massive cuts to the IRS and opposition to public spending on infrastructure, education, health, and other necessities.
This isn’t just about Republicans. For years, the Democratic leadership has supported “balanced budgets” (spending so little that no new money is left in the economy after all taxes are paid).
The “paygo” rule (which requires all new spending to be matched with cuts or tax-hikes) is religion for the likes of Pelosi and Schumer. That’s why the Democratic caucus is mired in stupid arguments about “how we will pay for the stimulus.”
As bad as the paygo rule is, though, Republicans have made it worse, by demonizing and starving the IRS. Paygo means that the US government operates under the artificial constraint of only spending if it can make cuts or raise taxes.
Raises taxes is really unpopular, for obvious reasons.
Now, raising taxes on the 1% — who have a lot of excess money that’s fueling political corruption and asset bubbles — is one way around this.
Theoretically, taxing the 1% should have a 99% approval rating.
But canny Republicans have figured out how exorcise temporarily embarrassed capitalists about the “unfairness” of taxing their bosses, in part by just flat-out lying about who new taxes would implicate.
But there’s yet another way to satisfy paygo’s artificial constraint, without changing the a single word in the tax-code: simply fund the IRS so that it can collect the trillions that the ultra-wealthy illegally avoid in tax-payments every year.
But this strategy is also a bust. The GOP campaign to destroy the IRS has been too successful.
It’s a longrunning campaign, but it achieved liftoff in 2013 when the Tea Party baselessly accused the IRS of discriminating against conservative groups seeking nonprofit status.
The work-the-ref strategy paid off, providing political cover for deep cuts to the IRS and putting IRS staffers on notice so they green lit every dark money group that applied for nonprofit status, no matter how obviously corrupt they were.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/fallout-from-allegations-of-tea-party-targeting-hamper-irs-oversight-of-nonprofits/2017/12/17/6403c1c0-c59e-11e7-a441-3a768c8586f1_story.html
After the cuts, the IRS grew easier to discredit. Understaffed and under siege, the agency’s behavior grew erratic, then indefensible. There were runaway automated processes that sent out erroneous property-seizure notices that no one could rescind:
https://theintercept.com/2019/01/14/irs-shutdown-federal-government-shut-down-irs-asset-seizures/
Then there was the aftermath of the Equifax breach, where the IRS first told Americans that it didn’t matter because they’d already been doxed by other bad companies:
https://thehill.com/policy/cybersecurity/355862-irs-significant-number-of-equifax-victims-already-had-info-accessed-by
Then came news that the IRS couldn’t cancel Equifax’s no-bid, $7.5m anti-fraud contract because it didn’t have the resources to do its own fraud prevention (Equifax eventually lost the contract because it served malware from its anti-fraud site).
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/equifax-irs-data-breach-malware-discovered/
The rich waged a successful all-out war on the IRS. Take the Global High Wealth unit. For every hour an auditor from GHW worked, they brought in $4500 in taxes the super-rich had dodged. Even by the topsy-turvy logic of “government as a business,” this was good business.
After a concerted harassment and political influence campaign, the GHW abandoned the super-rich and switched to the merely wealthy, bringing in less money and pissing off a lot more people.
The other shoe dropped in 2019, when the IRS admitted it had switched to preferentially auditing poor people because it was too politically and legally fraught to audit rich people, even the most flagrant cheaters.
https://www.propublica.org/article/irs-sorry-but-its-just-easier-and-cheaper-to-audit-the-poor
That was the first year that America’s 400 highest earners paid a lower tax rate than the average American worker:
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/10/06/opinion/income-tax-rate-wealthy.html
The IRS’s transformation into a facilitator of illegal wealth retention by the super-rich and petty harassment of the rest of Americans made them very easy to hate.
To that, add the concerted corporate campaigns to use the IRS to rip off workers.
For example, for 20 years, Intuit lobbied the IRS not to make tax-filing automatic, painless and free, ensuring that Americans would continue to pay billions to send data to the IRS that it already had:
https://www.propublica.org/article/inside-turbotax-20-year-fight-to-stop-americans-from-filing-their-taxes-for-free
Reading the IRS’s internal emails from this battle reveals an agency in retreat, where demoralized and ineffectual government employees simply rolled over for one of the greatest ripoffs in American history:
https://www.propublica.org/article/the-irs-tried-to-hide-emails-that-show-tax-industry-influence-over-free-file-program
Intuit wanted to rip us off with taxes. Microsoft, by contrast, just wanted to break the law. Working with KPMG, the convicted monopolist created a “transfer” scheme of breathtaking illegality, using its tax-savings to bankroll its war on the IRS:
https://www.propublica.org/article/the-irs-decided-to-get-tough-against-microsoft-microsoft-got-tougher
Which brings us to today, where Democrats are held hostage to the “payfor” rule and trying to figure out how to mobilize the trillions Biden has pledged for infrastructure, health, and care.
Republicans — pushing the big lie of “taxpayer money” — are dogwhistling hard. Senator John Thune, responding to Biden’s proposal for $80b for the IRS, says any tax enforcement efforts “must strike an appropriate balance between taxpayer responsibilities and taxpayer rights.”
Meanwhile Senator Chuck Grassley takes the nonsensical position that funding the IRS won’t help it do its job (“simply throwing money at a problem doesn’t necessarily yield a solution”).
https://thehill.com/policy/finance/553704-lawmakers-bicker-over-how-to-go-after-tax-cheats
Then there’s Rep Kevin Brady, warning that a fully funded IRS would “unleash tens of thousands of new IRS agents on families, farms and businesses.”
But the Democrats own the paygo rule, not the Republicans, and their leadership have added their own special touch to make funding the IRS impossible.
https://prospect.org/politics/infrastructure-at-a-crossroads-biden-public-investment/
According to the rules Congress gives to the Congressional Budget Office (which calculates the cost of government programs), the CBO isn’t allowed to factor in the projected additional revenue from funding the IRS, only the cost of doing so (!).
Which means that they must factor in the salaries that IRS Global High Wealth auditors will draw — but they are forbidden from counting the $4500/hour they generate when they puncture the tissue-thin financial lies of the super-rich.
The payfor and “taxpayer money” are lies.
It’s a shuck sold to the rubes, not economics. Because it’s a shuck, it doesn’t have to make any sense — and it doesn’t. We shouldn’t run government like a business, but if we must, let’s at least count revenues as well as costs.

This bill doesn't get rid of the education system. I don't know if you're deliberately fearmongering or if your public school just did a terrible job of teaching you civics, but the federal Department of Education doesn't provide schools. Public schools are provided and run by states, not the federal government.
The federal DoE sets regulations and acts as a pass through to distribute federal dollars to schools that come with strings attached to force the states to comply with whatever laws the feds want to impose but don't technically have the authority to enforce (often things entirely unrelated to education). Meanwhile thousands of federal DoE employees chew up the funds that pass through their offices because they of course need salaries and that funding pays for them first so by the time your strings-attached-funding is ready to actually go to schools, it's been substantially reduced. Then when it gets to the schools, they have to spend large portions of that money to pay salaries of people who spend all their time filling out paperwork to prove they are complying with the DoE's regulations. The money that was supposed to go to educating kids gets eaten up by bureaucrats who don't care that your kid has never been in a class of less than 35 and their teacher has to use her own salary to buy pencils for her students and the school only has enough textbooks for a third of the kids.
Nevermind the fact that the federal Department of Education had absolutely no constitutional justification for its existence, they actively make education worse and divert desperately needed funds away from public school classrooms. Yeah, they're first on my chopping block too.
#not to mention this is what massie does#he's a libertarian and he spends his time proposing bills to strip the federal govt back to its constitutional bare minimums#its not like anyone ever takes it seriously#so stop freaking out

Good morning, here's some light reading from the sensible side of Facebook...
A Day in the Life of Sue Republican
Sue gets up at 6 a.m. and fills her coffeepot with water to prepare her morning coffee.
