Watching multiple cracks in Alastor's composure only for him to narrow his eyes and/or smile a bit wider afterwards is one of the most delightful while simultaneously horrific things put to media that I've seen in a while.
It just builds on such encroaching dread as the episodes continue, because you can see it very clearly in his eyes that he remembers shit that bothers him, and stores whatever happened to act upon for later.

i feel like a lot of people who write astarion's character off and refuse to engage with his story and character arc are missing out on a very important aspect that is incredibly real and devastating in our world.
it's the existence of an imperfect victim.
which is an unfortunate reality for so many people. and that's why so many of us keep running into this cognitive dissonance where we can't connect the two.
in a way, through media, as well as real life examples, we're constantly being shown this image of a perfect victim, the target of suffering. often completely innocent, there to be tormented and to be weak and to suffer and cry. it's almost... palatable? they're there for us to feel one emotion or another. pity often being at the top of the list. they're at the bottom of the line when it comes to control, authority, aggression. they did nothing wrong. they're there to be brutalized, to fit a very particular role in the narrative. a passive role.
but more often than not, in real life, victims aren't these perfect, meek, quiet, passive figures. especially when it comes to sex trafficking (sex work being looked down by the society and the law surely creates a brutal trap where you're the 'bad guy' even when you ARE a victim). there's no escape. you learn to play by the rules of that world. for so many, there's no 'fairy-tale' ending where you're going to escape by remaining passive and hopeful and continuing to suffer.
there are so many cases where trafficked people end up committing crimes. for some it's just theft, battery, assault. but there are cases where the victims end up brutally murdering their abusers, or their 'clients', or both. and that's when society, as well the judicial system, stops seeing them as a victim altogether. as if they never were one. all of their absolutely horrific suffering gets pushed away, nullified in the eyes of the public. now they are the perpetrator, the criminal. and worst of all, some use this to justify their horrific abuse.
i can't even count how many times i've seen comments where people say 'well, they didn't have to kill them, they could've xyz' or 'why go out of their way to be so brutal?' etc. etc. which yet again... erases sympathy for the victim.
as if committing immoral acts somehow retroactively applies 'punishment' through previous abuse. and the mob's moral craving for 'justice' gets scratched. resolves the cognitive dissonance. it's much easier to connect the two dots, if the person was 'evil' all along. perhaps they were never a victim to begin with? perhaps they deserved it?
and that's where, to me, it loops back to astarion's story. and one of the key points portrayed.
no one deserves such horrific abuse. it doesn't matter if you're an asshole or if you're a sweet girl who had her trust exploited.
and it's not to say that a victim's crimes are suddenly justified because they were a victim to begin with, no.
it's more about our inability to tackle the nuance when someone is both. the one inflicting the suffering as well as receiving it. their 'crimes' are not justified by their suffering. yet, their suffering is also not justified by their 'crimes'.
it is certainly a difficult situation to navigate, but i wish some people would engage with those uncomfortable topics and step out of their comfort zone sometimes instead of writing something off because of some surface details.

Watching tiktok users not understanding the TLOU2 storyline at ALL, butchering all significant points and only having braincells to put characters in either a good or bad category, Joel stans calling Abby the villain, Abby stans calling Joel selfish, blaming Tommy for Ellie's decisions, thinking that Ellie chose revenge over Dina or that she'd be happy if she stayed etc:

you ever read a few chapters of one of the best fics you've read recently, only to finish the 3rd chapter and realize the story is unfinished, and thennn you see it hasn't been updated in like 2 years, and thennnnnn you see that the author orphaned the account, and thennnnnnnnnn you follow the user's notes with their twitter and tumblr tags and see that they've apparently deleted both of those accounts too?

[ Lanterns | Burning Incense ]
They go hand in hand.
In the years that have passed, Zhongli has performed this ritual alone, though the gentleman seated at the edges of the cliff is just that – a man with an understanding of another’s personal significance, or simply someone who drifted to the sea of clouds to witness the sunset and reflect on his own memories.
Like this, they are two ghosts adrift in the gentle fog, neither comfort or hinderance.
Zhongli’s lantern is alight, the elegant script shining gold as the former archon releases it toward the sky while the incense infects the fog and carries it forward. To fallen friends, he thinks, settling with his head tipped to the sun.
Time slips on undeterred, though as long as he lives, he will carry on their memory with complete clarity, with fondness and love and longing.
The earth beneath him does not shift, so his companion in this must be content, and Zhongli makes himself so as well, murmuring affectionate memories to those who can no longer laugh along to them in this world.
Whether one arrived first, or that each had simply become aware of the other at the same time, hardly affected the thread of camaraderie that had begun to spin between them without so much as a word or proper introduction. Some implicit understanding blossomed in the silence, and continued to grow as the stately man clad in the colors of the earth began to speak to the wind, and the wind carried its sentimental tales to the one who lounged some paces away on a rock jutting out beneath the shade of a birch tree. Suddenly, they were no longer alone; from the mountain rose the afterimages of things once buried, people who laughed from the beaks of swallows that darted through the trees, and the fragrance of colors that existed only in nostalgia.
With his face half-turned to the other man and his eyes on the lantern’s ascent, Gallagher listened unobtrusively to the stories that gathered a parade of lives on its journey skyward. Lives so bright with fondness that he felt as though he were meeting each of them here now. In a display of gratitude, he offered up one of his own to join them:
Once there was a boy with the stars in his eyes. He became a mechanic for a train that sailed through galaxies, and dreamt every night of all the people he’d meet on all the worlds he’d visit. Blessed with kindness and compassion in his heart, he hoped to make each place a little brighter than he’d found it. However, compassion would hinder a nomadic life, and just as his journey was beginning, he saw a world in desperate need of his and companions’ aid. There he disembarked, and there he would stay for the rest of a long, difficult life.
But the boy grown old still had the stars of his faraway youth in his eyes. He would visit the worlds he never could in his waking life. Whether in dreams. Or in memory.
So they went on like this, exchanging stories so old they might as well have been fiction, carried dutifully by the last remaining eyewitnesses of their respective tales. One remembered how one liked to remember, after all.
As the first lantern became yet another star in the dusky tapestry unfurling over the last embers of the afternoon, Gallagher released his own and leaned back on one arm to watch it drift slowly after it. The young mechanic had never seen this place, and the stars were different here than the ones he often gazed up at like a canary might through the bars of its cage, but wherever his tale was told, he lived in spirit. The man who had grown old before he’d traversed the stars could walk them again. What would he think of this place? Or the lives that he joined in their twinkling dance overhead?
”… What a view,” Gallagher said to the man who was neither stranger nor friend, but who had nonetheless helped bring the past to life for but one short afternoon.

listen, i appreciate that not every movie needs to be a romance and sometimes the story is better without one. but wish was supposed to be a tribute to classic disney, the very first disney feature film was a fairy tale with a romance, the disney renaissance period was (at least partly) built on fairytale romances and romance in general, and the last time WDAS wrote a romance that was a) actually important to the story and b) not a pre-established romance that would obviously remain in a sequel, was with kristoff and anna in frozen (2013). and i just wish disney would vary things a bit more in general! like we finally got a classic ruthless villain again, why can't we have a romance that's not just in the background again too? we went from the renaissance period where every movie had romance as a central part of the story, to now where for some reason none of them can, and idk why it has to be that way. also, just, the concept of a romance between asha, just a regular girl, not a princess and not even so much as the king's apprentice, and the literal star she wished on who came to her in the form of a human boy, sounds extremely interesting and sweet to me and would've worked as a sort of callback to peasant x royal stories like cinderella or beauty and the beast but with its own unique twist! i also personally think that whether he was actually intended to be a love interest or just a friend, star would've been a way cooler character as a shapeshifter in human form.

satosugu is not canon but the implications to me are crazy (rant)
the first thing i want to talk about is how BOTH of them died on december 24. why is this significant?
Tumblr media
not to mention, gojo is the one to kill geto. even then, they harbor no ill feelings for each other (gojo still calls him his “one and only / one and only best friend” even after everything”. what gojo said to geto at the end remains unknown due to it being inaudible, but it’s still speculated that gojo again, still tells him that he’s his one and only best friend, before suguru says “at least curse me a little at the very end”.
-
Tumblr media
then there’s this; i’d like to think that he was also talking about geto while telling yuta about his curse with rika.
-
Tumblr media
gojo has infinity, meaning that he’s basically untouchable. anything that comes close to him slows down a tremendous amount until eventually—they basically can’t reach him. so obviously, with this infinity, he doesn’t need an umbrella because he could easily dodge the rain. but nope, he brings an umbrella to share with geto anyway 🙁🙁
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-
when geto and haibara talk, haibara asks if he wants anything sweet or salty when he gets back from the mission he’s assigned to. geto says that gojo might want some too, so he asks him to get something sweet. HES STILL THINKING ABOUT HIS BEST FRIEND. because after the star plasma vessel’s death and everything that follows after, gojo had become the strongest and geto still falls behind. effectively, they are no longer the strongest together—something that made their bond in the first place. without being able to keep up with gojo along with riko’s death and his morals as a jujutsu sorcerer getting flipped, geto falls into a depression that eventually descends into madness. but even then, he still thinks about gojo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-
suguru speaks satoru’s name in a softness that’s only reserved for him. that’s what kenjaku couldn’t replicate, geto’s love for gojo. but even for a split second, gojo really thought he was back and that was his downfall in this arc—with the shock, he gets sealed.
youtube
you can listen to how geto calls gojo’s name in this video vs this one;
youtube
it lacks the softness. gojo almost smiles, but he realizes it’s not truly him. it’s not shown in the clip above (all the clips i’m finding always cut it out.. for some reason?) but gojo also says this: “your body and cursed energy, all the information provided to me by my six eyes is telling me that you’re suguru geto, but both my heart and soul know otherwise.” because kenjaku couldn’t keep the same soft spoken tone with geto to gojo, he knows it’s not him.
-
the last one is insanely funny to me. gege reads BL’s and i’m pretty sure he said that’s what inspired him to write gojo and geto’s storyline 😭😭 he was literally inspired by doomed yaoi to write them
-
that’s it. best friends or lovers they make me so insanely sick, there’s a lot more but i think these ones are more satosugu oriented. thank you for reading because i was tweaking out the entire time while writing this.
gege has confirmed them as just best friends but still holy shit how can you drop all this
