BNHA x DGR because Iâm mentally ill â¨
Izuku would be the ultimate analyst and heâs like 11 when heâs scouted and accepted into HPAâs class 77 (SDR:2), but he still desperately wants to be a hero so heâll constantly seek out Akane and Nekomaru and be like âteach me to fightâ and theyâre like âholy SHIT heâs terrifying letâs do itâ so they become friends, and later he approaches Peko and is like âfight meâ and Peko finds this both deeply unsettling and also accepts that the request immediately. Fuyuhiko is very happy that sheâs making friends!
They become the Fight Club and itâs essentially an underground fighting ring except above ground and you arenât allowed to kill or maim people (psychological warfare is very much allowed however).
In that first year Chiaki befriends Hajime, and Hajime is forcefully befriended by Izuku and the two drag him into class 77 until they collectively see him as a friend (barring Nagito). But Hajime is going thru it and thinks that they donât think heâs a friend, and this ultimately leads to him considering the Hope Cultivation Program. He gets kidnapped by his career councillor near the end of the year and is officially expelled from HPA. He later goes missing. For a year.
Izuku is super fucking sus bc heâs not an idiot and has obviously noticed tha something fucky is going on with the school (finances are skewed, funding is disappearing into somewhere, high ranking people visiting the school too often when they donât have any relatives attending, stockholders buying and selling at increasing rates, leery of heroes and police, monitoring students more than usual, extreme security increases; Izuku smiles and nods and ciphers everything down through multiple different scripts with missing keys that no one has solved, and very carefully does not react. He searches for the Ratâs encrypted email for 6 months because he still wants to be a hero.)
When he sneaks through the ventilation and finds that lab and finds the one in the lab. That changes things.
After the first yearâs sports festival, there is a four day break.
When Izuru finally meets the vent crawler in person he feels something other that anger, hatred, or fondness, that he canât identify; itâs not from the still sleeping Hajime. Emotion is not something so easily removed from someone who feels so strongly. The scientists donât know what exactly happened to some of the talents they tried to instill in him and he would never tell them that it was his other half who had received them.
The hero raid on Hokkaidoâs Hopeâs Peak Academy is largely missed by the media, if only due to the fact that the school is largely made up the quirkless.
In other news UAâs first year classes now have new classmates. As do some other hero schools. Wonder what thatâs all aboutâŚ
(UA gets class 77, Aizawa gets Izuku, Izuru, and Hajime, Sekijiro gets Peko, Akane, and Nekomaru, 1C gets Nagito, Chiaki, and Ibuki, etc.)
#izuku: I can excuse organized crime but I draw the LINE at human experimentation#aizawa: you can excuse WHAT??#Izuru: if anything happened to midoriya I would kill everyone in Hopeâs peak and then myself#Hajime: I donât even know how I got here what the fuck is happening#Hajime just suddenly having talents that Izuru doesnât is so fucking funny like âwhat do you MEAN i can do magic now what the hell??â#to be fair I made it so he already has to be kinda okay at the thing so heâs stuck to things like artist magician mathematician and gymnast#and also writing and cooking#bc of that Izuru is only like half competent at the skills Hajime has and simply wasnât able to incorporate other skills like musician#because a lot of the time was initially spent conditioning and modifying his body#but heâs got skills like assassin athlete swordsman martial artist etc.#he also has a half baked analyst that only give him information and nothing about how to use it or understand it#bnha#sdr2#danganronpa#my hero academia#izuku midoriya#izuru kamukura#hajime hinata#alternate universe#crossover

okay, so the long and the short of it is real long and also fairly identifying with respect to my career, so this is all going under cut.
during my phd, I got really interested in condition-dependence for sexual signaling. people frame this thing as an index of good genes, but I was really skeptical of the idea that genetic quality was necessarily all that strong a signal to perpetuate female choice. there's just too much randomness in individual experience for that to be all that strong a signal. I thought that condition dependence made more sense as, basically, a great way to partition resources depending on how much you have overall--kind of like a luxury good vs. a basic staple.
so I spent a lot of time thinking about how bodies self-assess their overall resource levels, which is how I got into metabolic signaling. The thing about metabolism and self-perception of overall energetic resources is that carbohydrate metabolism and fatty acid metabolism exist as.... not totally parallel systems, but they more or less act along their own pathways. So I did a bunch of work poking at carbohydrate and adipose metabolism blockers to try to get at self-perception of resource levels without modifying actual resource levels. That's how I got into the whole thing. Blockers didn't work super well for me, in part because most of them hadn't been touched in like thirty or forty years and in part because bodies use a whole bunch of indices to determine resource levels. So I moved on to poking at endogenous resource availability signals.
I specifically did some work with leptin, which was a much-bandied about "cure for obesity" when it was initially discovered about thirty years ago as a 'satiety hormone.' Unfortunately, beyond a certain threshold point, adding more leptin to the system doesn't stop feeding behavior/motivation/whatever, so the weight loss industry more or less dropped it as a focus. Most of the work with leptin research focuses on it in terms of this "threshold" above which it doesn't change feeding behavior.
Except that if you artificially manipulate leptin to increase leptin levels on a free-feeding animal, I found that you get more investment in social behavior/sexual signaling than if you just inject saline. And I found all kinds of systems leptin has a finger in the pie for: depression, bone density, reproductive investment, and especially immune challenge. Ah, Greg Demas over at University of Indiana has done some incredibly fascinating work on leptin and broader adipose signaling, more people should read his shit. Especially the stuff with hamsters, which have some interesting modifications that allow them to basically treat their hoards in the same ways that other animals handle fat depositions. No idea how, but it's wildly cool.
Fat is generally distributed in specific pads, especially in rodents--humans tend to sort of distribute ours through some of our muscle tissue in addition to our own fat pads--and it has both cis-acting and trans-acting hormonal functions as an endocrine organ in its own right. That's right: adipose tissue produces endocrine signals that the body needs in order to understand what its overall resource capacity is. Some of these signals are clearly cis-acting: for example, if you remove the epididymal fat pad that hangs out near the testis from a rodent, that testicle will no longer be able to produce sperm until and unless the fat pad regenerates (which it will do if you leave a tiny bit left). It does not help to have the same fat pad available subcutaneously under the back--it's not about how much fat the animal has--it's about how much of that fat pad is available right by that testis.
The thing about metabolic signaling and the hypothalamus more generally is that our endogenous hormones often regulate a whole bunch of systems at once. Take glucocorticoids--that's cortisol in humans--which psych and pure behavior folks tend to gloss as "stress hormones." In fact these are also wildly important hormones that control our insulin production, which is why perpetually elevated levels of same will slowly kill your insulin receptors and result in metabolic dysfunction. (Well, at high levels--at shorter levels, if you're stressed out all the time, maybe it's better to not move as much and retain more body fat, forage a bit less. After all, moving around is a great way to get noticed by something that thinks you're delicious.)
The other thing about metabolism, digestion, and motivation to eat or forage is that most things are pretty cheap, metabolically speaking. The harder I looked at costs of these elaborated sexual traits, the more I found that those costs tended to be the result of other actors in the ecological space: being overheard or perceived either by other members of your species that you didn't want to perceive your signal, or else being eaten by a predator. Most of these signals are actually not that metabolically expensive in terms of actually producing tissues or organs or displays.
So it occurred to me a long time ago that "calories in, calories out" is probably a pretty bad index of how an animal chooses to maintain its resources on an ongoing basis. Extra adipose tissue has obvious costs to haul around, and if resources are abundant, why bother? Studies like the Vermont Prison Overfeeding Study (in which prisoners were asked to gain 25% of body fat, maintain it for 10 weeks, and then try and lose it again--and did so very easily) and Leibold, Rosenbaum, and Hirsch 1995 (which found that people 10% under their normal set point burned energy much more slowly, and people 10% above that set point burned energy much faster--even when measuring just plain resting metabolic rate) convinced me that it was probably more tricky than that.
uh, this is already quite long so I will leave it at that, but basically:
-we also know that the secretions of satiation-inducing hormones like ghrelin change based on how we expect to feel after consuming a food: foods labeled 'diet' that we have learned to associate with unsatisfying experiences result in less ghrelin secretion, even as compared to the same food item with a different label
-orexin, like leptin and the glucocorticoids, is clearly connected to not only sleep and satiety but also to stress response and pain signaling
I forget if I had anything else to say, but here's everything I got off the dome.
genuine question- how do you feel about vaccination?
Very pro. Iâve gotten every vaccine Iâve ever been offered. Iâm behind on my flu shot this year but thatâs just because they keep doing the work clinics on days when Iâm either not there or working through lunch. Our immune systems are ticking time bombs that are always looking for an excuse to kill us and so far all available evidence suggests that exposing them to things via vaccine reduces the rate of autoimmune issues due to that specific virus or bacteria later, in addition to decreasing frequency and severity of infection. The shingles vaccine may even decrease risk of dementia, which is HUGE.

Kairi tried to be quiet when she closed the door of the lab behind her and walked towards the middle of the room.
Sora was sitting on an examination bed, his legs dangling over the edge. He didnât look happy, but calm and relaxed. Almost as if he had never been gone in the first place. Seeing him with an expression like this, it was a bit hard to believe the horrific things that had happened to him during the year and the few months he had spent in Quadratum alone.
He almost instantly spotted Kairi when she came through the door, despite her best efforts to be quiet. A wide smile formed on his face. âKairi!â
She smiled back. âHey.â
Kairi still couldnât quite believe that he was really back yet, even though Riku and her had found him weeks ago. Maybe she just wasnât used to it yet.
Sora slid off the examination bed and walked towards her.
Kairi tried to not stare at his body. She didnât want to make him uncomfortable⌠In a helpless attempt to distract herself, she turned to Ienzo, who was currently arranging some papers, probably related to the examination he had just completed by the looks of it.
âHow are you?â, Sora asked. He now stood right next to her.
She shrugged as she turned back to him. âIâm good,â she said. The more important question was⌠âHow are you, Sora?â
He laughed. âI guess I could be worse.â
Kairi supposed that was true. The past few weeks and month had been rough. There had always been the very real possibility that Sora was already dead and their search was for nothing, something Kairi and Riku had feared very much. Despite that, they refused to give up on him, especially after they finally had a clue that was as good as a confirmation that he was still alive.
Even after they had finally saved him, they initially werenât sure whether he would recover from what had happened to him for some time. And after that, there had been little time to spare for looking after his wellbeing. Yozora and his friends had needed every bit of help they could get, and of course Sora had wanted to help too. She just hoped he hadnât overdone it, especially after everything he had been put through previously.
âAre you sure?â, she asked. âYouâve been through a lotâŚâ
âIn fact, he is doing surprisingly well despite his⌠Current condition,â Ienzo remarked as he walked towards them. Apparently he was done arranging his papers. âI must admit that when I first heard about the occurrences that befell you, Sora, I presumed you would be in a much worse state.â
Kairi bit her lip. So there was something wrong with him aside from the obvious part?
âIf you excuse me, Kairi, but I must ask you to leave the room for a few minutes,â Ienzo continued. âI want to talk to Sora about his conditionâŚâ
âItâs fine,â Sora interrupted. âI donât mind her listening.â
Ienzo turned to Sora. âAre you sure?â
He nodded. âItâs fine, Ienzo. Really.â
Ienzo sighed and did something with his papers. âAlrightâŚâ
âHow bad is it?â Kairi couldnât keep quiet about this question any longer. It had been lingering in her mind ever since they rescued Sora from the Gigas â well, actually, she had wondered about it ever since she first met Yozora. He had been through the same thing after all, although he additionally had his memories erased as well, something that Sora had fortunately been spared from.
Ienzo sighed. âAs Iâve already told you during the examination, Sora, some of your organs were technologically augmented. Several of them were also removed and replaced with mechanical compounds entirely.â
Kairi gulped. That sounded awful. She couldnât help but think about what the Gigas must have done to him in order to get those augmentations where they were, and she felt like the thought alone was tearing her apart. It disgusted her. But even more so, it made her angry to know that Sora, or more accurately his body, had been modified in order to be used to power and control a weapon, all while he had been forced to watch without being able to do anything about it. Now he had to live with the aftermath of it, while the person behind the Gigas force had gotten away and would likely threaten their reality next. Kairi had no idea what the Master of Masters was up to, but she wanted to tear him to shreds for the pain he had caused Sora, albeit indirectly.
It was just so unfair!
To her surprise though, Sora seemed to take the news with much composure â he simply nodded slowly. Maybe it was because Ienzo had already told him before, or maybe Sora had changed at more than she had realized yet.
âDisregarding those deviations in your physiology however, your bodily functions are just fine. Again, I must say I am quite surprised.â
Kairi sighed. That was a relief⌠She had been prepared for worse. That still didnât answer the big question thoughâŚ
âCanâŚâ Sora paused. He was looking down on his own hands, and the black plating that covered the skin. It made him look more like a machine than a human, but Kairi knew that underneath that façade, he was still Sora. He would always be Sora.
âCan you⌠Change me back to how I was before?â
Ienzo looked down onto his papers. He was avoiding direct eye contact, Kairi realized. âI have to admit⌠I do not know.â
Sora sighed and hung his head.
âI will have to discuss it with Even,â Ienzo continued quickly. âHe knows much more about these things than I do.â
âCanât you duplicate the missing organs with the replica technology?â, Kairi suggested. She didnât know too much about how it worked, but⌠âYou did replace one of Venâs kidneys that way when it had stopped working in the Realm of Darkness.â
âIndeed,â Ienzo nodded. âHowever, it was a fairly easy surgery with little risk of failure. If it had not worked, he would still have had the other one to keep him alive. At worst, we would have had to remove the replica kidney again if his body had rejected it.â
Kairi already knew that the procedure had technically not been required. But Even had been eager to try and see if the replica technology could be used for good purposes, such as medical ones, as well. Ven wouldnât have had to agree, but he had done it anyways. Much like Sora, he could never decline an opportunity to help someone, even when it meant getting surgery for research purposes.
âIn Soraâs case, however, it would involve multiple complicated surgeries, some of which I am not sure we are even qualified for. Additionally, the internal organs are not what I am most worried about regarding such a procedure.â
Kairi gulped. That didnât sound goodâŚ
âThen what is the problem, Ienzo?â, Sora asked. He had become very quiet.
âThe exoskeleton,â Ienzo answered. âIt is practically fused with your skin. In order to even reach the internal organs, we would have to remove at least parts of it, which subsequently means that we would have to remove your skin in the area concerned as well.â He sighed. âIn any case, it would be a very lengthy procedure with multiple complex surgeries involved.â
So there really wasnât any way⌠Kairi lowered her head as well. Of course she had been aware that it might not be possible to restore Soraâs body to how it was before he had been taken by the Gigas. She had hoped that there might be a way though, for his sake. They had never really talked about how he felt about the state of his body ever since his rescue, but she strongly suspected that he didnât feel comfortable with it. She couldnât blame him after everything he had supposedly been put through.
If it already upset her that much â how must he feel about it?
Sora lifted his head and nodded. âI understand.â He tried to manage a small smile, but it didnât look like an honest one to Kairi. âThanks regardless, Ienzo.â
âYou are very welcome, Sora,â Ienzo said. âI promise I will talk to Even as soon as I get the chance. I just donât want to make you any promises right now.â
So there was still hope? Kairi would have liked a definitive answer better than thisâŚ
âWhy donât you two catch a bit of fresh air and come back later?â, Ienzo suggested. âIt might help to take your mind off the situation.â
How long had it been since she had last spent an extended amount of time with Sora alone? They hadnât exactly gotten to that in Quadratum, unless the times when Kairi had watched over Sora while he was asleep counted.
âIt sounds like a good idea to me,â Sora said. âAre you up for it too, Kairi?â
She managed a small smile. âOf course,â she nodded. âLetâs go!â After all, thatâs what she had come here for: to spend some time with him, and maybe to help a little if it was required. She just wanted to make sure he was okay.
 ---
They ended up going to the castle garden, where they sat down on a bench near the fountain. It was currently in the shade of a tree, so the sun didnât burn down on them.
For a while, neither of them said anything. Kairi didnât really have an idea on how to start a conversation with him. As many questions as she had, she didnât want to pressure him into talking about the time he had spent in Quadratum alone, the state of his body, or his appearance for that matter. He was the one who had to decide whether he was ready for that or not.
So she simply allowed herself to look at him for once, taking in all the changes to his appearance for the first time in weeks.
Instead of the comfy clothing he used to wear, a skin-tight black exoskeleton now enclosed his entire body up to the neck. It had a few scratches here and there, but overall it seemed pretty indestructible. Kairi still had no idea what exactly it was made of, but it surely wasnât metal. She had been surprised by how little Sora weighed when she had freed him from the wreckage of the Gigas he had been the central unit of, since she had expected him to be much heavier.
He also had those weird things that looked a bit like headphones now. At first, Kairi had assumed that he could just take them off, but as it turned out, that wasnât the case. Just like the exoskeleton, they were like a part of his body now.
The by far most outstanding piece of the exoskeleton however, at least when Kairi was concerned, was the backpiece. It looked a bit like a second spine, just that it had some red-glowing circuits and ports on it. It was the part that had connected him to the machine he had been a part of. Kairi knew there was also a tracker in it, but it wasnât functioning anymore. Ran, one of Yozoraâs friends, had ensured that so the Gigas would stop trying to retrieve Sora in order to insert him into another mech â or to turn him into nutrition for other central units.
Kairiâs stomach turned just thinking about that. She remembered how shocked she had been when she first learned about this from Yozora, back when he had first explained what Gigas did with the humans they abducted. âWhat did you expect?â, Yozora had commented in response. âThe central units still have to get nutrients. And itâs not like the Gigas can just walk into the next store to buy some food, especially considering they give it to them intravenously.â
âI know that,â she had retorted. âIâm not dumb! Itâs just cruel and really gross!â
âTheyâre machines,â Yozora had responded in his rather infuriating calm and collective way. âThey donât care about ethics.â
The conversation had taken place before they had found out that the Master of Master was responsible for the creation of the Gigas â and also the one who gave them the idea to use humans as a core component of their mechanical bodies. It just made the entire thing even more gross in Kairiâs opinion.
After all of this, she was simply glad Sora was still alive, even though they hadnât found a way to restore his body to how it was before he had been transformed into a central unit yet. Quadratum might be free from the Master of Mastersâ rule at this point, but the city was still in chaos. The undamaged equipment at the hospitals was needed to treat the injured survivors, and things would likely take some more time to calm down.
They also didnât want to be an additional burden to Yozora, who had turned out to be none other than the rightful heir to the throne and was now getting accustomed to his new duties. It hurt to leave their new friends behind, especially since clearly everything wasnât well just yet. But like Yozora had said: they had done everything they could for Quadratum. They rest was something they could help very little with. They needed to look after themselves now. Besides, someone still had to stop the Master of Masters, who had escaped to their reality. Kairi really wanted him to get a taste of his own medicine.
Therefore, they had decided to return to their own reality, hoping that Ansem and his disciples might find a way to restore Soraâs body to its former state. She had barely realized it had already been a week since then â it felt like yesterday since they had finally arrived home.
âYou know,â Sora said, âthis body actually has its advantages.â
He didnât sound too convinced of his own words. Knowing him, he might just trying to be optimistic in order to push his true feelings away, since he couldnât change his situation right now anyways.
Kairi raised an eyebrow. âLike?â
âUhmâŚâ He seemingly couldnât think of a single thing immediately, which only supported her suspicion.
Kairi sighed. Ever since they had returned from Quadratum, he had been avoiding his friends to some degree. Whether it was because he didnât want them to see him like he was now or because he didnât want them to worry about him because they noticed how much he hated the state he was in she didnât know, but it was so unlike him. She wished he would open up about those feelings, but she also knew she couldnât force him to.
âI can hear a lot better than before,â he finally said, but he still didnât sound convinced of his own words. âLike, I can hear very high and very low sounds, even if theyâre really quietâŚâ
âYou actually hate it, donât you?â
Kairi couldnât bite her questions back any longer. It hurt to see him like this, trying to convince himself that everything was fine when it obviously wasnât. Why did he not open up about it? Was it just a classical, stupid Sora-move because he didnât want to bother his friends with his problems? Or did he not trust her anymore? Maybe he even thought she couldnât take it because she was too weakâŚ
âNo,â Kairi thought. âSora would never think of you that way, even though you were too weak to prevent this from happening.â
Had she not get caught by Xemnas, Xehanort wouldnât have killed her. If Xehanort hadnât killed her, Sora wouldnât have used the Power of Wakening to bring her back, which eventually led to his disappearance to Quadratum. And if that hadnât happened, he would never have encountered the Gigas, meaning that he wouldnât have been transformed into a central unit for one.
It was all her fault.
âYouâre right,â Sora admitted quietly. âI do hate it. But itâs not your fault that I am like this, Kairi.â
Kairi meant to tell him that he was being too good â it was her fault, at least indirectly. But she knew it would only lead to a discussion she wasnât here for. She wanted to help him as far as she could, not argue with him. âYou can still talk to me about it though.â
Sora sighed and leaned back against the back of the bench. He looked up to the sky, seemingly absent-minded. âYou heard Ienzo before,â he finally said quietly. âHe doesnât even know whether theyâll be able to restore my body to how it was, and even if they are, it could take a long time. I might as well come to terms with it.â
It made sense, when he put it like that. But at the same time, it scared Kairi. The Sora she knew would have stayed optimistic that Ansem and his disciples would come up with a way to restore his body. Had he really changed that much in Quadratum or was he just desperate?
âI...â
He hesitated. Kairi bit back another question that burned on her tongue â she wanted him to take all the time he needed if he was going to open up.
âI miss eating.â
Kairi had never really thought about that part before. She had gotten so used to him not showing up to the meals that she didnât even question it anymore, and neither did the others. She knew that the central units were fed intravenously â with what were technically human remains, that part would undoubtedly haunt her forever. In fact, both Yozora and Sora still took in their meals that way, although nowadays their nutrients came from labs, not from corpses.
âI know you donât have to eat anymore, but canât you just get yourself something and eat anyways?â, she asked carefully, realizing that she still had no idea how all of this worked and probably should have asked about the details sooner. She didnât want to upset him even further.
But Sora just shook his head. âThey replaced my entire digestive system with mechanical compounds,â he explained. âIf I eat or drink, it might damage them beyond repair. I could die.â
âOh.â She should have thought of something like that. Kairi knew he liked to eat, and especially to try out new dishes. If there was any way he could still eat, he probably would have already. âIâm sorry, Sora.â
âItâs okay,â he reassured her. âI just wish I could at least drink some water. Itâs not the same to get your nutrients injected into your veins, even though that at least keeps me sated.â
He sounded so sad⌠Kairi wanted nothing more than to take his hand and squeeze it, but she stopped herself from doing so, seeing as his hands were also covered by the exoskeleton. He had explained to her, shortly after waking up for the first time, that the sensors in it registered the touch and even told him what it was, but he couldnât feel it and how that was weird. Kairi found that a bit hard to imagine. She didnât know if holding his hand would actually help him or only remind him further of the fact that his body had been changed without his consent.
So instead, Kairi slowly raised her hand and gently brushed the skin of his cheek with her fingers. It was a lot cooler than she expected â was that another effect of having part of his body mechanized?
Sora turned to her with a surprised look on his face, and for a moment, Kairi worried that she had gone too far. But then, a small smile tugged on his lips.
Encouraged by the fact that he was apparently fine with this, Kairi placed her entire palm on his cheek. She even dared to push a few hairstrands behind the weird headphone thing that covered or replaced â she wasnât entirely sure about that part â his ears.
His hair was shorter than it had been before Quadratum, but spiky and unruly as ever. Kairi suspected that it had been shorn off completely when Sora had been changed, and that it had grown back over the time he had spent inside the Gigas as its central unit. According to Yozora, the machines werenât exactly known for great maintenance, since it was much more efficient to build a new one than to repair the old ones beyond the most basic functions. So why should they have cared about his hair beyond what was necessary to change his body for their purposes?
Sora leaned into her touch, sighing quietly. âI miss this too.â
âWhat?â She had never touched his cheek like this before, so that couldnât be what he meant.
âFeeling,â Sora clarified. âI mean, I can still feel things on my face and head, and I get information from what the sensors in the exoskeleton are picking up, butâŚâ He didnât finish whatever he was going to say, and instead nuzzled her hand with his cheek, closing his eyes. âThis is so good.â
âBut itâs not the same?â, she tried to finish what he had said earlier.
âYeah,â Sora confirmed. âAt least on the parts covered by that stupid exoskeleton.â
Kairi suppressed a giggle, not wanting to give him the feeling that she was laughing at his situation. She couldnât help a smile however. It was good to see that he hadnât changed in each and every possible way.
Sora yawned. âIâm tired.â
She hadnât heard that from him in a while. Immediately after his rescue though, she had heard it a lot, but she couldnât blame him for it.
Apparently the entire time he had spent inside the Gigas, he had been fully conscious. How he and others that had been rescued before him had managed to survive this ordeal was a complete mystery, but after his rescue, the first thing Sora had done was to sleep for several days straight. No one had been able to wake him during that period of time, and Kairi had even been worried that he might never wake up. Even once he did eventually wake on his own, he had still complained about how he was incredibly tired for two weeks. She was pretty sure he had slept more than usual as well.
âDo you want to rest a bit?â, Kairi asked him, just like she had back then whenever he had mentioned how he was tired again.
But Sora simply shook his head. âNah. Iâve already been resting quite a bit after all.â He yawned once more and stretched. âI just didnât sleep that well tonight.â
Kairi had a suspicion why. âNightmares?â
He nodded. âThe usual ones.â
Kairi sighed. âThe usual onesâ meant dreaming about being stuck in that robot again, with no control over his own body, forced to watch as horrible things happened in front of him. She would have liked to give him a hug, but she wasnât sure whether Sora was comfortable with that either. âDo you want to talk about it?â, she asked instead.
Sora shook his head. âNot right now,â he responded. âMaybe another time.â
âOkay.â
Sora yawned again. âMaybe I could close my eyes for a little bit thoughâŚâ
Kairi grinned. Sure â just closing his eyes for a little bit. âDo you want to lean on me too?â
It was a joke that had become common between them after Soraâs rescue, when at first he had gotten tired quickly and needed to rest frequently. Every time, Kairi would ask him jokingly if he wanted to lean on her, and every time Sora would end up responding in some non-sensical way. They would then both have a laugh, and depending on whether Sora was up to it or not heâd rest his head on her shoulder for a little bit before leaving to take a nap somewhere. She didnât expect the answer he gave her this time around though.
âThat would be nice.â
Kairi felt her cheeks heating up. Sora had never been that upfront about it before. He still was full of surprises, wasnât he? Maybe it was just because he was really tired â the examination on top of not sleeping well must have exhausted him. Kairi just couldnât tell him no. âO-okay,â she said. âCome here.â
He moved a bit closer to her, until their shoulders were touching. Huh. That was new as well.
Much to her surprise, Sora flinched at the contact.
âAre you okay?â
âYeah,â he said. âI just⌠You donât have to do this, Kairi. I understand if itâs uncomfortable for you orâŚâ
He was talking about the exoskeleton, she realized. Well, that and the fact that he was technically part-machine now. Not that Kairi minded much about that. Sure, his appearance had changed a lot and in some ways, she couldnât interact with him just like she would before his disappearance. Simple questions had become potentially dangerous ground to thread on, and physical contact was something both of them still seemed to be insecure about.
But to Kairi, he would always be Sora, even when he was stuck as the central unit of a giant robot.
âItâs fine. You donât make me uncomfortable, Sora,â she said, carefully wrapping an arm around him and gently nudging him a bit closer to her. âIâm just glad youâre back and alive. Weâll figure out the rest, okay?â
Sora nodded while moving a little bit closer to her. âOkay.â He sighed when he placed his head on her shoulder and closed his eyes. âAre you comfortable?â, he asked quietly.
âIâm alright,â Kairi said. Sure, the material of the exoskeleton felt hard and sturdy, but nothing she couldnât handle. The more important question was⌠âAre you comfortable, Sora?â
He hummed quietly.
âOr shall I remove my arm from around your shoulders?â There technically wasnât any necessity for it to be there, and his sensors must be ticking off.
She didnât get an answer however. Instead, she heard regular breathing from her shoulder.
Kairi smiled. So much for just closing his eyes for a bit. Sheâd surely be stuck like this for a while, at least until Sora woke up again. Not that she minded much though. If she could help him like this, she was gladly doing it.
She did remove her arm from around his shoulders though, not wanting to do anything without his consent. And he didnât look like he was slipping off the bench or her shoulder any given second.
Just when she did though, one of Soraâs hands tentatively touched her leg, as if he was looking for her in his sleep. Kairi blushed when he sluggishly wrapped his arm around her hips. Sora had always been a rather clingy sleeper.
Carefully, Kairi wrapped her arm around his shoulders once more. It was nice to see that despite everything he had gone through, despite the fact that his body had been changed possibly forever, some things were still the same. But most of all, it was good to see that he was still Sora.

Is Being âGoodâ Not Enough for You?
Is Being âGoodâ Not Enough for You?
How to be the BEST at Krav Maga
Iâm not going to lie and tell you this article is about being nice and dandy. Itâs not! I know you want to be the best you can be and you want to be able to kick anyoneâs ass in any situation, you want to be untouchable (though you donât admit it freely). Itâs natural, weâve all watched too much television and grown up in a world where violence has been glorified. We want to see ourselves as the hero who can function effectively in the face of adversity and stick-it to the villains of the world.
Reality is never that perfectly written, and without trying to get to the root causes of such desires, Iâm just going to offer some pathways for you to get yourself closer to that destination. If you really want it, you need consistency, dedication and clear focus. On top of that, having, passion to fuel you is important.
First of all, I do not condone inappropriate use of force and actions in violent situations and conflict. Imi, the Founder of Krav Maga was a big advocate of his students being âgood citizensâ, and we hold that core value very close to our hearts.
Never-the-less, hereâs an overview of my tips to becoming the Krav Maga weapon youâve always wanted to beâŚ
Please note that what Iâm listing below isnât for everyone! If youâre willing to go the extra mile, then youâre in for a good shot.
Train In Your Krav Maga Gym for a Minimum 5 Hours a Week. Whether you do a few classes back to back, or spread it over a few sessions, itâs important that youâre getting good exposure to training. If you see the opportunity to do more, then do more!
Get Super Fit.
Sure you donât need to be an athlete to defend yourself, but if you want to be a WOMD then I suggest you get super fit and agile. Do lots of running, skipping, ladder drills, pad rounds, HIIT, strength work, etc. Do as much as you can so that you have the ability to defend and attack from any position effortlessly. Make sure whatever you do is functional so that it transfers to your Krav Maga.
Acclimatisation Drilling.
I first learned about this topic from Deane Lawler. The most basic way for me to explain is that it teaches you to ignore the shock of an attack and go on the offensive as quickly as possible (if not simultaneously in the worst case situation).
How does it work? The attacker will aim to stun you to simulate the shock of being hit, and youâre job is to disregard the shock and strike back. The aim is to create a pattern of instinctive countering. It becomes subconscious and really, REALLY, REALLY works magic! If there was just one idea youâd take out of this out of this whole article, itâs acclimatization.
How to drill it: Have your partner hold two focus mitts in their hands. They will attack you to the head with circular hand strikes. You must do a head cover/gunt and an immediate, powerful counter to focus mitts (remember, power is derived from speed, mass and distribution/technique; you can modify this to suit your needs, and weâll release videos to show variations).
It resonates with me and the focus I put on teaching and training. Itâs inline with Krav Maga principles and with my personal experiences in the real world. As someone who has been in many real violent situations, I can say that this form of training really gets you conditioned to the reality of these situations and to the reality of what it takes to survive.
Get The Killer Instinct.
If you donât develop this, youâll likely be in shit. You need to have a real brutal and vicious machine inside you, ready to switch into a bloodthirsty, cannibalistic animal that refuses to be taken down. You have to be badder than the bad. You need to get in touch with your dark side, and really embrace it to help you fight for the forces of light. If youâre too nice, you might need to work on this!
To survive real conflict, you need to be able to lift your game to a whole new intensity and you need aggression, determination, courage and a fair bit of âcrazyâ to get through it.
Work on developing strong intentions and actions to what you need to do. Meaning paint in your mind and in your training all the tools to be brutally effective. While doing this always aim to create a mind that cannot be distracted from the task and that will do whatever it takes.
Do 30-60 minutes of Shadow Krav Maga Daily.
You can call this whatever you want. Just ensure youâre working on your Krav Maga in a way where youâre practising your striking, footwork, and defences in the air. Focus on good form, having flow, and on working from natural positions/points in time. You want to give yourself a good contextual understanding of Krav Maga and doing it like this will help you make it all natural. You may feel awkward doing it initially, but thatâs part of the process when integrating your movements so they become like second-nature to you. Remember that perfect practice makes perfect, so go in with the right attitude, energy and focus so that you have good awareness of yourself.
Repetition is only good if your technique is good. If you do it wrong, you just drilled a bad habit, so stay aware.
Ensure Youâre Pressure Testing And Scenario Drilling.
You need to be running live testing drills that simulate reality as close as possible. Youâll hopefully get lots of drills in class, but if not, just organise a little group and do it somewhere on the side. Iâd be looking at doing this at least 1-2 hours a week and doing as many multiple attacker rounds as possible. *Remember to always put safety first. Do it realistically, but do it responsibly.*
Do Pad Rounds.
If you donât do enough in class, consider doing them elsewhere. You should do at least 18 x 1-2 minute rounds a week. Mix it up so that the intensity is always changing.
Spar More Than A Few Rounds A Weeks.
If youâre not sparring and trying your skills against other resisting opponents, then good luck when you deal with it for the first (and possibly last) time on the street. You can extend this to all pressure drills, multiple attackers and so on with full safety gear on.
Condition your mind.
Visualise and practice concepts like NLP (Neural Linguistic Programming; a mental patterning tool) to condition yourself for the success youâre after. Visualise all aspects of any situation, any attribute and so on to improve your mental comprehension. It has been proven that athletes who visualise and work on their mindset learn faster and perform better than those that do not.
Get A Full Contact Job.
Go be a bouncer, or take up a job as a hired hand with the Mafia. Just kidding! Working in a situation where youâre practising all your skills, including de-escalation and conflict resolution will help you. Just donât get killed and donât break the law! For most people this will be unreasonable, and I understand, but some of you will feel that you need to take this step, especially if youâve never been in a real fight in your life. The alternative is to go start some fights, but we donât advocate that at all, so donât!
Practice 1 or 2 Showstopper Techniques.
Have 1 or 2 techniques you can use to preemptively strike and take out a threat. Something simple and direct, aimed at vital points to neutralise the threat quickly and with maximum efficiency, with minimum time and energy. Practice these techniques from positions where you look non-threatening and non-telegraphic.
Learn How To Retzev.
You need to have a good compound attack (a sequence of attacks that do not stop). The only thing with this one is that you want to keep it very simple and, like the show stopper techniques, you need to be able to drill it and rely on it. Start with a good sequence of powerful hand attacks, that goes forward relentlessly, viciously and with the prime objection to overwhelm and destroy the opponent.
Toughen Up Your Tools.
Most people will probably disagree with me, but who cares! Toughen up your shins, knuckles, forearms and body through conditioning work and hitting things. You know how it feels when you collide with someoneâs shin, or their forearm on outside defences right? Well imagine it barely hurt you. I canât tell you how many times people have wacked into my shins, and it hasnât even fazed me, while theyâre walking off to the side with regret on their faces. (All because I spent my teenage years kicking poles).
Record Yourself.
Use your camera phone, or your camera and record yourself doing different types of training. Refer to it often and use it to fix areas of concern, and/or refine upon something.
Be Open To Learning From Others.
I think to really get a holistic understanding of any topic that we need to have an open mind and not just conform and keep a status quo. Yes, if youâre really passionate about Krav Maga, increase your world-view on the topic. Learning from more than one source is not a bad thing. It can help validate things, expand knowledge and so much more. We do our best in Krav Maga Systems to give as much of a holistic approach as possible, but still, if you really want to understand the world of Krav Maga, you need to do some research and ask lots of questions.
Mirror, Mirror On The Wall.
Yeah, I say it all the time and Iâll say it again. Train in front of a mirror! You will see what you do and be able to correct it there are then. Every exceptional Kravist, fighters or martial artists I know does this!
Watch Lots Of Real Life CCTV & Combat Sports.
Balance these out. Look at how real life conflict starts and escalates and what it looks like. Establish a good grounds for reality, even if youâve been there and done that. Train with those situations in mind, and feel free to recreate them in a scenario. Learn from them to understand the mind of you potential enemy.
Practice De-escalation In Training.
Probably the most important thing one needs is a good skills in de-escalation. Think of it as your own personal Iron Dome. The Iron Dome intercepts and destroys missiles that are aimed at targets within Israel. Your Iron Dome is constantly looking for threats in the awareness stages, but if something gets into its path it intercepts it without fail.
Look at this intercept as a pattern interrupt or a pattern change instead and make sure youâre training in how to talk down a potential threat first where it is possible. This is very important in your training and sits in the realm of knowing your stages of conflict, force continuum, and a whole lot of other things.
If youâre a bit shy in training, practice it solo (in the mirror is a good place to start). Having more than just physical skills is important. I often think about how I could talk my way out of a lot of situations because I understand whatâs happening and where I am in the stages of conflict. Having such knowledge and being to apply it is really important!
Anyway, I could just keep on going, but Iâll leave it at that. These are some tips for you and I hope they help you greatly. May you walk in peace dear friend!

A Historical past Of Musical Type In Modern Europe And America (Norton Introduction To Music.
It is official - science has basically confirmed, with a research, that Pop music is indeed each getting louder and diminishing in selection. What we think about traditional Greek folks music is intently tied to the wealthy history of Greece. In Historic Greece, the music was an integral part of Greek theater. Afterward, music evolved and was influenced by the Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, and in a while, the Ottoman Empire. In this instance, you will be listening to a Latin music clip. In Latin music like merengue and salsa, the percussion instruments, piano, and bass line all work collectively to make an incredible intricate rhythmic internet. Within the clips below you'll hear the entire different Latin percussion instruments solo. Then you'll hear the full observe (repeated once for a total of eight measures). Provided that we do find that MySpace musicians group genres into constant complexes (3 worlds, sixteen style communities), we turn to our third question, about the structural dimensions of those complexes. To do so, we look at the extent to which the permeability of genre communities' boundaries differ. Here we return to the 2x2 desk from above, and show how the most important genre complexes within the MySpace universe fit inside it. Thanks MagicKat. A lot of girls do say they've encountered important quantities of sexism and harassment in the rock music scene, which can clarify why some ladies might have felt they wanted to be more masculine to fit in. But I agree that's not necessarily each lady's experience. Nonetheless perceptions depend for lots. If women believe the rock music scene will likely be hostile to them, they could be wary of coming into it to begin with. Fewer female artists might then imply fewer feminine followers.
Initially from the Dominican Republic , bachata is likely one of the most popular Latin music genres today. Though the making of Bachata music began again in the Sixties with the songs produced by Jose Manuel Calderon, this rhythm was not capable of compete with the recognition that Merengue used to have. Popular music serves as an id badge for certain social teams, www.magicaudiotools.com a badge that's worn with nice satisfaction. Its bonding mechanism can, North argues, âbe useful to weak youngsters', regardless of any anti-social message it may proclaim. He commends style radio, such because the BBC's Asian Network, as being notably helpful.
Live performance Music:Â Many composers mixed jazz music elements with different music kinds such as classical and blues. Music during this time additionally spoke of nationalistic fervor. Among the composers whose works had been drastically appreciated have been George Gershwin (Rhapsody in Blue), Aaron Copland (Rodeo) and Dmitry Shostakovich (The Golden Age). You'll be able to hear parts of submit-âRoyals' pop in âHands to Myself' and âBad Liar' by Selena Gomez, âNew Americana' and âNow or Never' by Halsey, âGold' by Kiiara, âRight here' by Alessia Cara (the Grammy's Greatest New Artist), Troye Sivan, Banks - even âClean House' and âLook What You Made Me Do' by Taylor Swift. But there is another excuse for that past altering occasions. Its name is Jack Antonoff. Pop, which is not synonymous with the time period fashionable music, arose out of rock'n'roll, people and beat music in the mid 50s USA. Nevertheless, Elvis Presley is also counted as a pioneer of the popular culture. The complexity of the original music fashion largely disappeared. In its place, easy harmonicas and series' of melodies straightforward to recollect had been launched, giving the populace higher entry to this music. With its catchy melodies the brand new style of pop was especially effectively obtained by the younger era.
On the one hand, we generally imagine biology refers to a hard and fast actuality. Our body is doing issues whether or not or not I believe it's doing these issues, no matter whether or not I'm conscious of them or understand them. It follows with this pondering that there are no privileged locations. Gravity functions the identical in Bangalore as in Paris. But at the identical time, the postmodern statement that our understanding of the world is conditioned by culture and historical past in ways in which we aren't even able to being aware of. The unknown unknowns of Donald Rumsfeld's amateur philosophizing could in the future hang-out us greater than his foreign coverage. This point is nicely taken, even if it must be balanced towards a backdrop of real waveforms and ear canals. After slapping on some reverb, the chamber strings sounded pretty lifelike, but before bouncing them I placed on my producer's hat (accessible at Asda shops for only ÂŁ2.99) and added a dash of my unique keyboard patch to the combination to sweeten the sound. I despatched the composers two stereo information: a mix of my demo strings and their tough mix (so they might hear the arrangement in context), and a separate stringsâsolely file so they could pinpoint its musical details. The relationship between music and hashish begins with understanding how music impacts the mind. In accordance with Michael Thaut , a professor of music and neurology at the University of Toronto, sound is processed from the spinal cord to the cortex. This means that the complete range of the central nervous system is activated after we take heed to a bit of music.Did not Arthur C. Clarke write a story about this? If I keep in mind, the researcher distilled standard music to a series of good" notes. For the centerpiece of his 1993 album, Billy Joel put collectively this stream-of-consciousness, gospel-influenced recording. It spent three weeks on the top of the pop singles chart and is likely one of the most uplifting hits of Joel's career. Typically a producer throws the whole lot they have into the arrangement, with the concept that pop music, by nature, ought to include every track you'll be able to cram and more. As a mixing engineer, you do have a little bit of freedom to mute an unnecessary soundâparticularly if it is so outside the realm of at this time's pop that it might instantly detract from the mainstream expertise. You'll have listened to plenty of techno music whereas clubbing, but it is Detroit techno that is thought of to be the foundation of this type of music. Unlike the times of its emergence, the use of technology as we speak has tremendously enhanced the quality of techno model music and popularizing it amongst folks day-to-day. This was a spacey techno-trip - with a mild beat, so's dancers could come down" slowly. Aaa-ah. And as the Eighties gave solution to the Nineties, this evolved into TRANCE. Trance started, basically, as Ambient, but slowly developed into a more light type of Dance music in its personal right. And it had LYRICS. Which by definition (see MANNER above) made it POP.Future musicians can usually hear more sound than the common person, according to Gardner (2006). They could expertise their feelings auditorily. As an example, the drone of a spring rain or the out of tune E string on a guitar has the potential to turn into categorized fairly than heard in environmental bulk to those individuals. These sounds are related to emotion and will be reproduced, remembered, and referenced back to on command. You're right that numerous Okay-pop hate comes from racism, but I do not think this was hate. That is just stating reality. I am a Korean learning in US proper now and I can see that BTS is on loads of information and charts however it is just because of a particular group of fans, not widespread reputation. Individuals who like Kpop are still seen as weird like otakus, BTS has not modified that to date. Most Americans around me will not be BTS followers.

The Truth is Out There [on Netflix]
Characters: CastielXReader ft. Sam and Dean Winchester, Crowley
Word Count: 1600
A/N: One-shot written for @thing-you-do-with-that-thing Kariâs Favorite Things Challenge with prompt â The X-Files. Castiel searches for the truth of the human condition on NetflixâŚwith a little help from his friends and a pair of fictional FBI agents who exemplify something it turns out he very much wants to believe. Off-beat humor and saccharine fluff.
The fateful day Sam instructed Castiel how to go about accessing Netflix was the day life in the bunker irrevocably changed. When not assisting with a case, the angel could reliably be found in his room binge watching yet another series, or two. You often tarried at the threshold of his ajar door on the way to bed to appreciate the television illuminated enraptured dopey smile glowing upon his normally austere features. Â Frequently you surrendered to the temptation to join him, swiftly drifting to sleep listening not to the television, but to his gentle laughter. He didnât seem to mind the company, regularly and uncomplainingly obliging the use of his shoulder as a makeshift pillow when your drowsy head rolled sideways. Generally speaking, you were happy he found something to distract him from his myriad of woes and fill his long no-sleep-required angelic nights, not to mention the perfect pretext to spend more downtime with him without drawing unwanted notice and subsequent teasing from Sam and Dean.
The angelâs initial viewing preferences mostly leaned toward comedic sitcoms and classic slap-stick thanks to Deanâs belief that Cas needed to lighten up and a worldly anecdote about laughter being the best medicine. Innocent enough suggestions until Cas spent an entire week indicating every instance wherein a laugh track insertion would be appropriate in daily life. He even downloaded an app on his phone to further illustrate the point. Dean, the recipient of the lionâs share of this attention, was not amused. The last straw came when Cas stood by during a tense alleyway confrontation with their on-again off-again ally Crowley, pointing out with a gravelly there, there, and there again whenever the King of Hell made a particularly witty retort. Grasping his friend very firmly by the shoulder, Dean informed Cas, in no uncertain terms lest the angel not understand, exactly where he could hilariously shove his proverbial laugh track. Crowley never before, or again, regarded his angelic counterpart with such high esteem as he did during that meeting.
Sam had the brilliant idea of filling the angelâs watch queue to the brim with documentaries. Castiel, already a walking celestial encyclopedia of all-encompassing universal knowledge, day-by-day became swayed by one extreme opinion after another. First, it was the evils of sugar. The angel took it upon himself one evening to smite every last granule of the substance from the kitchen while you all slept, blissfully unaware there would be no morning breakfast cereal when you awoke or sweet crystalline delight to dump into your bitter coffee. You habituated to hiding in the bathroom with the shower running to mask the sound of contented chewing to enjoy your favorite cookies free from the angelâs icy blue disapproving glare. Dean began keeping pie in the Impalaâs glovebox, by happy accident discovering apple pie stored in a car sitting in direct afternoon sun was nearly as delicious as one pulled piping hot from the oven. Sam walked around with a smug grin for a whole week, soaring mood squelched only when Cas sternly questioned him about the provenance of his salad greens. Were they genetically modified? Was he aware of the pesticides used in their production and their impact on the drastically dwindling bee population? The land destroyed in the manufacture of the palm oil listed as the fifth ingredient in his favored salad dressing? Was that salmon topping his heaping bowl of wrongs wild caught, or farmed?
Amidst threats by the thoroughly vexed parent-figure Winchesters to cancel Netflix altogether and a sulking Castiel dejectedly retreating to his room like a grounded teenager, you interceded, promising the brothers you would find something totally innocuous for the angel to watch. You werenât giving up your late night snuggle fests, that conveniently no one thus far had identified as snuggling, without a fight. Netflix received a temporary stay of execution. Stifling a victorious squeal, cloaked in a mask of utter calm, you slunk from the library to apprise Cas of the good news, pace quickening to an enthusiastic scamper when you rounded the corner out of the brothersâ sight. Neither Sam nor Dean were fooled by the feigned disinterest of your demeanor â your amorous interest in the angel practically a flashing neon sign to everyone but the aforementioned oblivious angel. They exchanged a knowing glance, punctuated by Deanâs signature smirk and Samâs husky laughter â the socially stumbling stoical seraph was your problem now.
âThere is no such thing as little green men,â Cas said, narrowing his ocean blue eyes. Nearly five seasons into a marathon viewing of The X-Files, and the angel couldnât get past the alien mythology behind the show.
As far as you were concerned, he was missing the whole point. âUgh,â you grunted. Sat cross-legged side-by-side with the angel on the floor at the end of the bed, you flopped against the edge of the mattress, âyou do realize you sound exactly like Dana Scully. How can you be so certain, oh skeptical one?â
âBecause, there is no such creature in creation,â he stated matter-of-factly, expression earnest as he peered into your exasperated aspect, âI was there almost at the dawn, and I am fairly certain God didnât create little green men before he created angels.â
âItâs a fictional world Cas,â you lamented, âitâs not about the aliens. Ever hear of suspension of disbelief for entertainmentâs sake? Mulder wants desperately to believe there is a tangible explanation for his missing sister. Itâs the great unknown of his life. Speculating gives him hope, something to hold on to, to chase. Heâs broken, he has made mistakes, heâs doing the best he can in an imperfect world.â You realized after the last word lilted off your tongue that perhaps Mulderâs plight might hit a bit close to home for the angel.
âI understand,â Cas murmured, bobbing his scruffy chin thoughtfully, âthen you value this show not for the accurateness of its subject matter, but for its depiction of the primary characters.â
âYes, exactly!â you beamed. âAnd, you know, the complexity of their relationship.â
Cas squinted, his bewilderment palpably hanging in the air between you.
You suggestively waggled your eyebrows, âYou knowâŚthe tension.â
âAh,â Cas nodded comprehension, âyou mean their continually dissenting opinions.â
âNo Cas,â you shook your head, âI mean the sexual tension. Mulder and Scully are madly in love.â
The angel could not have appeared more gob-smacked than if youâd suddenly sprouted an additional big blinking eye in the center of your forehead.
âLook,â you snatched the remote, âIâll just find a program more in your wheelhouse.â Clearly enjoying fantastic multi-layered character-driven sci-fi drama was off the scale of the angelâs emotional barometer and reading between the lines was not a skill he possessed with any degree of fluency. Maybe something in the realm of mystery like Murder She Wrote was a better option? Maybe a procedural cop drama a la N.Y.P.D. Blue?
Casâ rough palm clasped over yours to prevent you from turning the episode off. âPlease,â he entreated when you met his searching sapphire regard, âexplain it to me. I want to understand.â
âO-okay,â you stuttered, focus dropping to his hand still holding yours.
He sheepishly withdrew the interloping appendage to rest in his lap.
âUm, itâs, uh,â you gaped, endeavoring to rally your thoughts beyond the lingering warmth of his touch tingling your fingers.
âI recognize they deeply respect one another,â the angel offered.
You nodded.
âAnd they would do anything to help one another,â he continued.
You kept nodding.
âAnd they make great personal and professional sacrifices to remain together as partners,â the tone of his voice rose, suggesting the waters of his perception here became muddied.
You looked to be exuberantly auditioning for the part of a life-sized bobble-head figurine.
âYet they seem to me to be no more than friends,â he sighed, slouching against the bed in defeat of his own reasoning.
You reigned in your wildly bobbing noodle to articulate a reply, âFor a long time they value their friendship too much to risk complicating it, but that doesnât mean they love each other any less fiercely.â
âFor a long time?â Cas lifted a brow askance.
âSpoiler warning,â you cautioned, âtheir relationship does become romantic, but as it turns out they were always much better friends. They each have a lot of baggage,â you paused, remembering to clarify so the angel didnât think you were talking about literal luggage, âI mean, they bring a lot of pained history to the relationship, and it ultimately prevents them from being together that way.â
âAnd do they regret complicating their friendship withâŚwith this romance?â Cas stared intently at you â oddly eager, in your estimation, for your answer.
You deliberated on your interpretation for a moment, taking into account the movies and the revival season in your verdict, âThe way I see it?â
Cas nodded once, blue eyes glinting beneath an increasingly concentrated brow.
âNo.â
Features relaxing, he sucked in a relieved, and for an angel, completely unnecessary breath.
âWhy do you ask?â you motioned to set the remote on the floor between your bodies.
Cas caught up your hand in his again as you let the remote drop. Twining his fingers through yours, he waited for you to meet his openly adoring gaze before answering, âBecause now seems like an appropriate time to tell you I value our friendshipâŚvery much.â
âI value ourâŚoh,â your tongue seized, brain playing catch-up to the tender but insistent squeeze of his fingers. âFiercely?â you whispered, agog.
âFiercely,â he acknowledged. A soft smile curving his lips, he leaned forward, pressing a kiss to your astonished mouth.

Fallout 76 tips and tricks: how to get the most out of the Fallout 76 beta
Those that are about to play Fallout 76âs beta on PC could also be questioning methods to get the very best head begin. In spite of everything, itâs reportedly the complete sport and the time spent throughout the beta wonât be wasted since progress will carry over to the primary sport when it comes out. Assistance is at hand as this information will go over among the modifications that Fallout 76 brings, in addition to explains issues like starvation, crafting, and far more.
Fallout 76 ideas and methods
Fallout 76âs public beta (or âBreak-it Early Take a look at Softwareâ) will start late on Tuesday 30th October for PC and is assured for individuals who have pre-ordered the sport at taking part retailers. Youâll find out extra about Fallout 76 and all the things we learn about it proper right here. However for these wandering into the world for the primary time because the Atom Bombs dropped, you could be questioning simply methods to survive on this hostile wasteland.
Ideas for weapons and armour in Fallout 76
First issues first, the trendy clothes like hats and outfits donât supply any defensive bonuses. If you wish to forestall injury, youâre finest off equipping physique armour or discovering one of many coveted Energy Armor units hidden in Appalachia. Fuel masks alternatively do present a tiny bonus.
Since weapons and armour can break, youâll often must restore them. This may be executed at any workbenches, both at your CAMP or in different places. If a chunk of apparatus ought to turn into damaged, it gainedât disappear out of your stock, however you gainedât be capable to equip it.
Lastly, relating to these coveted Energy Armour frames, youâll find them usually subsequent to Energy Armour Stations. Do you have to come throughout one, in case you switch armour plates that youâre unable to equip into your stock, you may enter the body and lock its possession to you. After this, you may exit the body and put it into your stock, or permit it to be transferred routinely to your stock after a brief period of time.
Perks and SPECIAL
Very similar to all the opposite Fallout video games, the chief stats of Power, Notion, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck, are all the key stats that govern how your particular person perks work. This time, you start with 1 level in every, relatively than create your personal character with a sure construct. Everytime you stage up, youâll be capable to rank up a single stat by one, to a most of 15. Factors are now not obtained when you attain stage 50, so spend the factors correctly.
Additionally upon levelling up, youâll be capable to select a Perk Card. Thereâs normally a brand new sort of card per SPECIAL rank, although this isnât at all times the case. This card doesnât should be from the stat you simply elevated, so you may take a Perk Card specialising in one-handed weapon injury, though you simply elevated Charisma. Theyâre filtered by class for straightforward navigation.
Some stage ups, specifically each different stage from 4 to 10, then for each 5 ranges you achieve, youâll obtain a Perk Card Pack. This include an assortment of semi-randomised perks, with some which might be duplicates and others that you just gainedât be capable to use instantly. You may share the results of any perk card together with your occasion too, supplied you could have not less than three factors in Charisma, with every Perk Card requiring you to have a complete of 3x the Charisma in comparison with the cardboardâs factors.
One different factor to notice is that the Perk Playing cards arenât everlasting. You may combine and match at any time, which means youâll find a second to swap sure perks for sure conditions. For instance, if in case you have the Perk Card with a hacking skill, swap to that construct briefly to hack the terminal or lure, then change again when youâre executed.
Managing ailments and mutations
After being uncovered to the weather and fallout for 5 ranges, youâll begin to contract ailments, maybe even start mutating. Ailments are solely eliminated with cures or by letting it run its course. Mattress relaxation in an honest dangerous with a body is one technique to forestall ailments completely. Satirically, dying doesnât even eliminate it, or certainly any radiation you could be accruing.
Radiation is a bit more problematic as solely RadAway can eliminate it. Nevertheless, it may possibly additionally introduce new mutations that both improve or deteriorate a selected a part of you. Helpful mutations might be stored in case you so want, by utilizing the Starched Genes perk card, which lets you maintain any lively mutations ceaselessly, or forestall any new ones from coming.
Fight ideas for Fallout 76
Be sure to have a melee weapon as backup. Ammunition is just not straightforward to return by, though weapons are plentiful initially. Itâs also possible to go to any Tinker Station to craft extra ammunition, however youâll want the corresponding junk to make them.
Because the sport has a relatively restricted view, both first or third particular person, VATS might be your finest pal. For those who faucet the button when nothing is there, youâll simply get an audio cue, but when one thing is there, itâs going to flag up. This may be nice for recognizing enemies or minefields and different traps, however every press does value Motion Factors (AP), even when it doesnât detect something. Due to this fact you must use it solely while you suppose you may want it.
VATS has additionally modified in Fallout 76, in order that your goal is highlighted in actual time. The proportion to hit will enhance relying on how distant youâre and your stats. You donât must manually goal, however with the proper perk card geared up, you may goal particular factors on their physique. The vital meter can be again from Fallout four, which means you may pull off a vital hit as soon as itâs stuffed with any shot.
Lastly, donât be too afraid to tackle an enemy thatâs the next stage than you. They are able to dish out extra injury than decrease levelled variations, however the remainder of the stats donât scale in the identical method. For instance, a Bloatfly might be killed relatively rapidly regardless of being a number of ranges greater, however it may possibly additionally deal extra injury in case you get too shut. Do you have to run right into a excessive levelled, huge scary monster with every claw the scale of a small automotive, then you must in all probability run.
PVP and loss of life in Fallout 76
Once you start the sport, Pacifist mode might be routinely enabled. You gainedât be capable to take part in PVP occasions and even shoot one other participant and injury them till you attain stage 5. Upon reaching this threshold although, youâll nonetheless take diminished injury if somebody shoots you. However in case you hearth again, injury might be their common figures. Do you have to not want to have interaction with PVP actions, Pacifist mode might be re-enabled by way of the choices menu.
If PVP is enabled, do you have to kill anybody who doesnât combat again, youâll have a bounty positioned upon your head. Youâll due to this fact not be capable to see anybody elseâs location, which means that anybody can come in your head and a decently sized bounty for his or her troubles.
Dying isnât fast as any participant can revive somebody whoâs downed with a Stimpack, or different related talents from Perk Playing cards. Nevertheless any injury sustained whereas on this state will case that participant to die. This may go away a âloss of life bagâ that incorporates all their junk, however not weapons and ammunition. Fortunately, youâre going to get a quest to retrieve the gadgets so that youâll at all times be capable to know the place theyâre. You may mitigate any threat from loss of life by redeploying your CAMP to a close-by location.
As with every MMO, if any location appears oddly empty, it might be as a result of somebody received there first and cleaned out the realm. By trying on the map, youâll be capable to discover any gamers who might have gotten there first, so you could want to wait some time for all the things to return again, earlier than committing to exploring the realm.
Ideas for Crafting in Fallout 76
There are many crafting stations within the sport, with Vault 76 and the Overseerâs Camp being explicit crafting hotspots, a bit like a type of startup hubs in greater cities. Nevertheless, since just one particular person at a time can function any workstation, it might be higher to put money into creating your personal crafting station at your personal CAMP. When youâre at it, be certain to construct a âVault-Tec Stashâ for storing all of your gadgets and junk.
Additionally, be sure you acquire as a lot junk as you may have in your particular person inside cause. It may be scrapped into base elements which might be helpful for crafting, weapon and armour modding, constructing, and even getting ready elegant wasteland delicacies, although itâs higher to carry it intact again to your CAMP. Nevertheless, thereâs a catch in that while you die, you drop all of your junk you presently have in your stock in a âloss of life bagâ. This may be retrieved by merely choosing all of it up, so long as no one received to it first. When you could have sufficient junk, you may both spend some caps to move it to your CAMP, or head there personally to retailer it. Preserving gadgets within the Vault-Tec Stash will let you use them at a workstation or when at your CAMP.
As for constructing constructions at your CAMP, Blueprints might be positioned to avoid wasting your format. Because of this everytime you log off of the sport or simply want to maneuver the placement of the CAMP to someplace much less hostile, you may restore your camp to the way it was by mentioning the blueprint record. Simply be conscious of the place youâre constructing your camp as it may possibly solely be constructed on flat floor and never close to every other buildings that exist already.
Discovering recipes and mods
When youâre looking for loot, you also needs to maintain a watch out for recipes. Youâll start your new life in post-apocalyptic Appalachia with a number of primary recipes, however the one method youâll discover any extra is by discovering them within the wild and in chests, or buying and selling from designated merchants and different gamers.
These wishing to be the following high chef can discover meals recipes by discovering meals or vegetation for the primary time, whereas mod recipes might be discovered by dismantling a weapon with that mod. For those who dismantle a weapon or armour piece in excellent situation, you could even acquire a recipe for that merchandise, however in any other case merchants and looting chests appear to be the easiest way to seek out them. Itâs also possible to get a tutorial on methods to put together food and drinks by following the primary quest-line, which can even reward you with some bonus loot to get you began.
Additionally, in case you see any timber, be sure you seize it as wooden is required for cooking recipes. Even critters transferring round can present invaluable meat used to make a small snack in a pinch. Our bodies of water might be collected and processed to filter out any impurities, so be sure you maintain a gradual provide.
Common ideas for Fallout 76
Earlier than Iâm going, there are some extra normal issues to remember didnât have their very own place. These vary from high quality of life modifications to necessary modifications to core options inside Fallout 76 like quick travelling:
For those whoâre not proud of how your in-game character seems, youâll be able to customise their look at any time. You donât even must exit the sport first so as to take action.
The Pip-Boy at all times takes up the complete display, which is ok for a singleplayer expertise. However for Fallout 76, this could imply that the world is occurring with out you, and you would due to this fact be weak to being attacked. You may toggle your view of the Pip-Boy in order that it reveals your environment just a little higher when perusing the menus.
As that is a web based sport, be certain to make use of your quick-slots so that youâre not navigating by means of menus to alter weapons or heal your self.
For those who simply choose taking part in Fallout video games in third particular person, that is completely attainable and is completed in a lot the identical method as earlier video games.
Bored with the identical outdated loading screens? Images taken inside Photograph Mode might be used in case you quick journey or any time youâll load your character into the world of Fallout 76. So if you wish to add that private contact, get to snapping footage.
For those whoâre on the lookout for normal loot, donât fear an excessive amount of about different gamers taking gadgets from containers earlier than you. Since every container is made for that participant, solely it is possible for you to to loot its contents. Objects unnoticed within the open nonetheless are a unique story, with bobbleheads being a main instance. This stuff do respawn after a time nonetheless, so donât be too disheartened if another person takes it first.
Finishing mini-challenges is value doing in case youâre occupied with gathering Atom Factors. These are premium foreign money which might be in any other case out there to buy instantly on the sportâs launch, and are used to purchase beauty gadgets. For those who donât need to fork out actual money, then mini-challenges would be the different technique to earn them.
Preserving nicely fed and watered is extra necessary than you may suppose. Youâll actually be extra thirsty than hungry, although neither of the 2 bars decreases too rapidly. You do get a bonus for having each of the bars over 75%, so be sure youâve received a gradual provide of rations.
Quick travelling can now value caps. You may quick journey anyplace youâve visited earlier than, however the additional away out of your present location itâs, the extra itâs going to value you. Have a gradual provide of caps for these instances the place an extended trek is simply an excessive amount of to bear. The one places that donât value caps are Vault 76, your deployed CAMP, and the placement of any participant in your occasion of 4.
Once you discover Bobbleheads and magazines, they supply a brief buff relatively than a everlasting one. Because of this do you have to discover a second copy of that Bobblehead or journal, theyâll refresh the buff.
These must be sufficient tricks to get you began in your journey within the exterior world, away from the secure confines of Vault 76. We hope youâll test again quickly when the sport launches formally for extra on the ruined world of Appalachia, what every perk card does, and what you must craft sure weapons.

hey fellow writer friends I need your opinions
ok so under the cut is some stuff from my ongoing sci-fi project (probably a tv series? idk yet) that Iâm super excited to expand on and Iâd be interested to know what you guys think / if you have any suggestions
basically the main question is âat a glance, would you watch this series / read this book?â
SYNOPSIS
The storyâs set in a future where there are several human colonies across the universe, all of them with different attitudes to interspecies breeding with the inhabitants of their neighbouring planets. The lead characters are a kind of rag-tag found-family bunch, most of whom are mixed-species or otherwise outcasts from their respective worlds-- the episode-by-episode plot arcs are kind of a Firefly setup, with them kicking about between galaxies causing trouble, taking shady jobs and being an adorable (if dysfunctional) lil family.Â
The ongoing plot arc is to do with the differing prejudices and beliefs on each planet (both human-populated and otherwise) - one of the oldest colony planets, 100% populated by humans, has gone a bit sort of.... space republican and is stirring up tensions between âpureâ humans and âneo-humansâ (those with mixed-species heritage). Which, as you can imagine, ends up affecting our neo-human lead characters in multiple ways.
So as you can see itâs not at ALL politically charged. Heh. (I put a synopsis on twitter a while back and my inbox was immediately full of wankers.)
THE LEADS
DOMÂ
Partially descended from a species that communicates empathically / psychically-- something he likens to the idea of âreading an auraâ. Uses his innate empathic ability to become a very good con man.  And annoy Birdie.
BIRDIE
Domâs partner in crime-- the muscle, though sheâs half his size. Used to work for a smuggling ring on one of the border planets, until she tried to con her own people and got her tongue cut out for her trouble. Now speaks entirely in sign language, and is always finding new and interesting ways to curse at people.
ADE
The only fully-human member of the crew. Assassin for hire-- pragmatic, rash, fiercely protective of their crew. Also genderfluid (something they use to their advantage when it is Disguise Time).Â
REI
The tech support-- scarily good with machines of any calibre. Neohuman who is much, much older than she appears (and uses her childlike appearanceÂ
CORAÂ
A synth (android) originally assigned as Reiâs medical unit and constant chaperone-- until Rei began modifying and expanding on her programming and the two formed a very different, much more personal bond. The two tend to view each other as sisters.
MORE IN-DEPTH STUFF
DOMâS EMPATHIC ABILITIES
To a human, Domâs empathic abilities are comparably excellent-- he can read people with incredible finesse. To a member of ToâAi society - his motherâs side - however, he struggles to communicate because his brain is simply not wired the same way. He describes it this way to CORA:
âItâd be like you trying to converse with a two-year-old; as far as theyâre concerned, Iâm basically talking in three-word sentences. Max.â
Having spent a few years in his teens being raised (reluctantly) by his mother on  after his fatherâs death, Dom was forced to find other ways to communicate and picked up Ruka, a form of sign language originated by interplanetary traders that was rapidly becoming common knowledge among the more developed / multicultural worlds. It was this form of sign language that he taught Birdie when he initially took her under his wing.
Later in the story they accidentally end up in hostile ToâAi territory and Dom has to act as an ambassador between them and the crew. Thought thatâd be some nice symmetry but I have yet to expand on it.
BIRDIEâS SIGN LANGUAGE
Shortly after Birdie lost her tongue, she was taken in by Dom, who nursed her back to health and taught her Ruka as a new means to communicate. In return, she taught him how to defend himself a little better.Â
Over time, as they took more and more jobs together, theyâve developed certain signs that are entirely their own that help them to communicate better in extreme circumstances (ie when doing crime), and Birdie assigns âsign namesâ to all the crew based on endearing features, injokes and the like. (This is actually a thing in most Western forms of sign language, as it saves the need to fingerspell everyoneâs name.) Her sign name for Dom, for example, is a colloquial Ruka sign meaning âidiotâ, but with the inflection that indicates a sibling.Â
REIâS HEALTH COMPLICATIONS
Reiâs mixed-species heritage is something of a mixed blessing. Her biological mothers, both involved with a genetic engineering lab in Shetuo, pioneered a controversial research project on the compatibility of human genes with those of other species - Rei was the fifth attempt, and the first to survive infancy. Her mothers genuinely loved her, encouraging her interest in technology and trying their best to give her a mostly functional upbringing.... but at the same time - with the help of CORA - keeping her practically imprisoned on their little home-base.Â
They had valid reason for concern, too: there are several health complications that come with her particular genetic setup. One of her mothers is a Paniang, a species whose formative growth (ie baby to mid-teens) happens very rapidly and then plateaus, deteriorating just as rapidly at the end of their approx. 100-year lifespan. However, the combination of Paniang and human means that Rei reached the physical age of ten, with a mental age roughly twice that, in two years flat. The rapid aging caused a lot of physical stress, leaving her very weak for a very long time. Her skin is peppered with stretch marks, her bones are not especially strong, her immune system equally so, and her muscles often cause her pain.
Having spent several years under the care of CORA and her mothers, Rei eventually decided her health was not going to be an obstacle. Depending on where sheâs going or how strenuous her activities are, she may need a filter mask (to keep her from catching something that could destroy her immune system) and/or a wheelchair.
ADEâS GENDERFLUIDITY
Being genderfluid or otherwise transgender, by this point in human history, is No Big Deal in 90% of the universe. Not only did humans themselves realise that gender is fluid more fluid than their ancestors thought, but they also adopted the lax gender attitudes of some of their neighbouring planets.
HOWEVER, this is not so much the attitude on Jynto, Adeâs home planet. It is the last remaining colony planet from the first wave of human colonisation and the closest to what used to be Earth. Many people there hold onto a sense of jingoism, and have strict criteria for what constitutes a âpure humanâ. Some have even begun to show intolerance towards humans who demonstrate qualities they associate with other species, or the much more lax and accepting attitudes of the multicultural planets - such as, for example, gender fluidity.Â
Ade was born as Adeline Raike, daughter of Senator Raike, a major advocate for human separatism. As a teenager they began to rebel against their fatherâs political leanings, secretly taking a short-range shuttle to the nearby metropolis of Kumidima so they could attend protests and rallies against the governing body of Jynto. It was there that they met Sarai, a young student from Aeolus where the dominant species is humanoid but monogendered-- and it was them that helped Ade work through a lot of their own gender issues until they came to the conclusion they didnât fully identify as female.Â
Shortly after, their father discovered what they had been doing and had them excommunicated from the Raike family altogether, as he couldnât risk the loss of respect among his government that having a neo-human sypmathiser for a daughter would bring. Ade was bundled off to a border planet with nothing but a meagre 50-credit chip as consolation-- and, unbeknownst to them, Senator Raike staged their death at a subsequent rally. Agents were already being sent in undercover to deliberately incite violence-- Ade was then alleged to have died in the brawl, amongst a few others. Raike did everything he could to spin the âtragic deathâ of his daughter to a) gain sympathy / limelight and b) paint the protesters in a worse light.
HUMAN SUBCULTURES
As many characters point out in the book, there isnât really any âpureâ form of human any more, as humans have begun to evolve apart from one another depending on the environment of their colony worlds. Some examples:
Erebos and Hemera-- the former is the moon of the latter, which keeps it in a near-constant eclipse. Over time, humans on the darker and colder Erebos have developed very pale skin and much wider pupils in order to be able to absorb more light, whereas humans on brighter and warmer Hemera tend to have very dark skin. Very few humans choose to live on Erebos due to the unforgiving conditions,Â
Insuro has significantly lower gravity than Earth (and many of the terraformed colonies that imitate its atmosphere). The small community of humans that live here are a good few inches taller than average, usually quite thin and wiry-- they have a tendency to appear elven and etheral, in a way. They donât travel offworld much-- when they do, specially engineered exoskeletons are usually required as they struggle to cope with the increased pressure on their bodies and would otherwise end up with serious injuries.
Deo Gansu is a mostly gaseous planet, and therefore wasnât a good candidate for terraforming. It was colonised instead with a series of self-contained citadels, essentially âbubble citiesâ constructed to float on the planetâs surface.

Why I'll Always Scream About Mordinâs Character Arc
With the approach of Mass Effect: Andromeda, I have recently replayed the Shepard saga, and feel the need anew to scream about how much I enjoy this trilogy. One thing that has always excited me is Mordin Solusâ plot arc, culminating in his ME3 death scenes. I want to thank @peachdoxie for convincing me to garner the courage to analyze this five years after Mass Effect 3âs release. It feels wonderful to dive in with discourse about what I find an incredible, emotional, and well-constructed narrative.
Mordinâs character - and his character arc - are based largely upon his internal conflict between logic and compassion. Itâs the difference between what he thinks he believes is right versus what he feels within his conscience. He has a set moral framework and strong sense of logic by which he abides, but that conduct doesnât erase the uneasy feelings stewing inside. What is so powerful about Mordinâs plot arc is that he does a complete one-eighty, undoing his own greatest scientific achievement, in his process to find inner peace. His prior scientific work creating the modified genophage leaves him haunted with moral questions; his choice to cure the genophage brings him closure for his past. Through this, he finally finds a cause he can dive into where both his rationality and his compassionate conscience work as one.
The conflict between his head and heart is finally resolved, and he can die taking action â for the first time â with full, unfettered conviction.
Mordinâs Introduction and Character Set-Up
Lots of ways to help people. Sometimes heal patients. Sometimes execute dangerous people. Either way helps. â Mordin Solus, ME2
When Mordin is first introduced, he demonstrates an interesting duality: he is both a man of healing and a man of killing. His reputation precedes him, and Shepard hears stories about him before they meet. These stories are full of this paradox. On one side, heâs a doctor who heals people gratis in plague-infested slums and offers refuge to all sapient species. On the other side, Aria comments, âHe's as likely to heal you as he is to shoot you,â and several Omega locals remark upon how Mordin calmly guns down both a gang of vorcha and a squad of Blue Suns mercs⌠and leaves the corpses as a warning in front of his *hospital*.
But Mordin makes clear from the start that he does not believe this paradox is paradoxical. Everything he chooses to do, he does with utmost reason and ethical consideration. He cares deeply about organic rights while simultaneously acknowledging that sometimes, to help others, dangerous people need to be eliminated. He is both a doctor and a military operative; he will do what it takes, whether itâs save innocents or murder wrongdoers. Straying from this course of action Mordin considers ânaĂŻve.â He pins the word both on Daniel when the young man says doctors should only help people, and on Shepard if she says curing the genophage will lead to only good things.
There is an initial strong confidence that Mordin holds about himself regarding his genophage work. He insists it was the best solution to everyone â krogan included â and tells Shepard, âNo apologies. Did what was right. Hope you do the same when necessary.â Mordin knows he researched all possible outcomes thoroughly with his team about how to handle the krogans, and thus is able to state with unyielding conviction, âGenophage modification protected galaxy.â He even can argue this solution is merciful to krogans, too. The genophage simply establishing their birthrates to pre-industrial levels and allows the species a chance to survive.
This footage of Patrick Weekes talking about Mordinâs character hits at that very point:
So for me Mordin is two different characters. The first character is the one I was given when I came onto Mass Effect 2. And I was told he is the scientist who redid the genophage, and my initial reaction was⌠unrecordable⌠but translated roughly as, âThat jerk,â because Wrex was my bro. So I had a choice. In manager speak, I had a probletunity, where I can either write Mordin as just a guy who did that and just went, âYup, sterilized âim,â and you know, maybe the really Renegade players would like that, but everyone else would go, âIâm never using him, heâs atrocious, heâs a war criminal, how could you do thatâ âŚor I could challenge myself more and try to write someone who saw himself as good. Some who saw himself as the guy who made the hard choice, who doesnât take the easy way out, who doesnât cartoonishly justify anything he did, but gets up every day, looks in the mirror, and says, âIt was the right thing to do, even if I am sorry I had to do it.â So thatâs what I tried to bring to him. And then the other part of it is the Gilbert and Sullivan.
Itâs astonishing to see a character stand so strongly for his work⌠when that work is what others might consider to be an illegal bioweapon, a war crime, or even species-wide infanticide that leaves at least millions of newborns dead. And yet Mordin truly does hold that he did the âright thing.â
Sort of.
And thatâs where his character conflict arises and his narrative truly begins.
Mordinâs Moral Framework
What does it matter if the ground is stained with the blood of millions? You taught me that the end justified the means. â Maelon Heplorn, ME2
One passive observation Iâve noted in fiction is that writers tend to downplay or criticize consquentialist frameworks. Completely âpureâ and âgoodâ contemporary Western culture heroes are usually more deontological in their ethical scope. I feel even Mass Effect relays internal moral vibes suggesting itâs better to avoid consequentialist choices. Thus, one thing Iâve found fascinating and attractive about Mordin is that he is someone who demonstrates a utilitarian framework.
To provide a definition: consequentialism is the ethical philosophy that the end justifies the means. Anything is morally permissible or praiseworthy if you work toward a positive end result. Utilitarianism, now, is a common type of consequentialism. Utilitarianism holds that a person should morally maximize the good while minimizing the bad and painful.
Mordin acts under the idea the end justify the means. Maelon himself says that his mentor espoused this philosophy. These ideologies are manifested throughout the games with Mordinâs words and actions. It goes beyond his choice to create the genophage. Mordin recommends dangerous people be killed if they are going to be a risk to others, be it aggressive batarians in Omegaâs Gozu district or Rana Thonoptis on Korlus. Heâs even fine killing Maelon. Itâs pretty utilitarian: pain is minimized by culling the dangerous people who would harm others. Heâs said other things that make me cock me head to one side in consideration, too; if he follows Shepard aboard the Collector vessel, heâll call the pile of dead bodies âdespicable,â but at the same time say, âThis was wrong. Inhumane. Even if Collectors needed to kill for experiments, could have ended lives painlessly.â By his phraseology, itâs almost as though heâs not discarding the possibility death might be needed for some experimental cases, but what he finds objectionable is that they caused unnecessary pain while doing so.
That said, Mordin does have some âcut-off pointsâ by which he believes something is wrong on principle. This would potentially make him fall into the category of rules-based utilitarianism, which holds that there are certain moral rules that exist because they overarchingly cause greater utility (less suffering and greater good). Mordin refuses to do experiments on species capable of calculus, for instance, drawing the line on the ground there, and also says he will never kill with medicine. He justifies the genophage in part by claiming it prevents birth rather than kills, so that still falls within his realm of moral reason.
And it is to note Mordin approaches lifeâs challenges through careful rationality. His choices are not based upon impulse, intuition, or instinct so much as conditioned rules, rationality, and principle. To quote this article, which I think provides an intriguing synopsis of his character:
[âŚ] his upbeat demeanor hides a cold, calculating mind that has spent years dealing with the most difficult decisions in the solar system - decisions that Shepard is drawn into over the course of the second and third games. [âŚ] As you bond with him, he opens, and you see him dissect the terrible problems he's faced with an analytical mindset. He has done the moral mathematics - he will kill a million to save ten million - but his genophage is a slow, painful deathblow for the Krogan.
This philosophical framework usually characterizes how Mordin speaks up front to individuals. It is how he gives his official stories, justifications, and reasonings behind his choices.Â
But hereâs the thing: even though he holds fairly strong by this philosophy, heâs not emotionally settled on all his logical points. As Shepard comes to know Mordin more, she can see within him how he is distressed by what he has done. Mordin mostly - but not completely - believes he is doing the right thing. There is a âbattle between logic and compassion that lies at the heart of his character.â
Mordinâs Conscience
We all fracture in different ways. Mordinâs conscience haunted him. Maelon crossed the line into barbaric experiments. And myself, I went searching for whatever gods created the rules for this unfortunate universe. â Padok Wiks, ME3Â
At first, Mordin might seem like someone settled with the choices he made, grounded in what he has done. But the more Shepard comes to know Mordin, the more she sees the holes. Beneath the logic Mordin advocates is an individual unsettled with his scientific accomplishments. And really, once you know that Mordin is actually divided about his genophage research, the more you see his shaken interior emerge.
Mordinâs unsettled conscience comes out from the first conversation he has with Shepard about his modified genophage. He opens the conversation by admitting he deceived Shepard about his work in the STG; he stares out a window, not making eye contact, when he utters these words. That already speaks volumes about how he feels. âWork on genophage was more than just study,â he admits, with a vocal inflection that sounds more doleful and serious than his typical jabbering. This topic is heavy for him. If Shepard responds in a skeptical, Renegade manner, he stammers, uncomfortable, more awkward than typical. He says Shepard needs to know âWhat I⌠did,â with an inflection perhaps hinting at the guilt inside him.
The further this conversation progresses, and the more Shepard asks questions about why he didnât take different actions, the more animated Mordin gets. His voice rises, sounding more anxious, urgent, and harsh; he paces; he waves his arms emphatically; he makes illogical half-truths; he almost sounds defensive at several points. The moments when his voice is most defensive occur whenever he tries justifying the genophage as the right choice. âModified genophage offered best outcome,â he says, while pacing, waving his hands, and sounding extremely stressed. âStabilized population. Avoided publicity that could incite krogan anger.â The fact Mordin gets so worked up at this moment foreshadows the agonized heart he later exposes on Tuchanka. Heâs giving Shepard the logical answer with his words, but his body language and vocal inflection convey heâs not happy with his logical answer, either. This topic stresses him precisely because it doesnât hit well on his conscience.
Itâs during the loyalty mission on Tuchanka that Mordinâs discomfort really comes to the forefront. Mordinâs initial character introduction is about establishing his confidence in his logical solution for the genophage. Mordinâs character development here digs into the meat of his narrative conflict: heâs still struggling with the aftereffects of his choice. The introduction shows his head; the development shows his heart. Mordin admits it can be hard to sleep at night. He admits everyone on his team changed after they saw the impact of their work (and Padok confirms Mordin changed, too, once he began recon missions on Tuchanka). Mordin outright says the genophage project was ethically uncertain. He says he established a clinic on Omega because itâs not ethically ambiguous, but a solacing and straightforward means of helping people in his retired years. It wonât cause him the stress the genophage project has done. And science, which once held the greatest excitement and certainty for him⌠now cannot comfort him in his moral dilemma. Mordin dives into religion to seek out a spiritual solution to his nagging conscience.
Itâs not a casual dive into religion, either. At least, that is what might be implied by what Shepard learns. The evidence almost seems to align with the idea Mordinâs religious explorations were a big deal at a critical point in his life. A younger Mordin was willing to enter a fistfight with Padok about whether or not evolution was guided by higher powers. It suggests Mordin would have probably rejected religious notions in earlier years. Yet the Shadow Brokerâs information on Mordin shows that later in life, he was even interviewed about the combination of science and faith. Mordin demonstrates significant knowledge in multiple religions, mentioning salarian theology, batarian beliefs, krogan gods, Hinduism, and more Christian references than basically all the human characters in Mass Effect make. He needed to do a massive amount of soul-searching because of his work with the STG.
Even in the Tuchanka hospital, Mordin still holds by his beliefs about modifying the genophage and reinfecting the krogan. He still says it was the right choice. He speaks about it less happily, but he still holds onto that argument. Yet now Shepard can see - very clearly - how much this choice burdens him. Even the Shadow Broker notices that Mordin working with Shepard on the Collectors is an attempt to rectify himself about his past actions. The loyalty mission makes Mordinâs conscience obvious.
Regardless of how Mordin decides to handle Maelon and the research data, this adventure on Tuchanka highlights Mordinâs interior doubt. Maelon says Mordin taught him the end justifies the means - but these krogan in Maelonâs hospital deserved better and Mordin recognizes this. This adventure brings his mind to the forefront of his personal and ongoing ethical struggles. He can choose to delete the data to try to gain closure, or take it with him; kill Maelon for his unethical choices, or send him off to Omega for his own soul-searching and healing; but regardless, Mordin does not gain closure on Tuchanka. It picks at the wound that Mordin knows is not healed.
The logic and the compassion are still at odds with one another. In the heart of Mordinâs character development, they are at odds almost more than ever before.
Itâs in Mass Effect 3 that Mordin finds a way to do something about it.
From Creating to Curing the New Genophage
I made a mistake! I made a mistake. Focused on big picture. Big picture made of little pictures. Too many variables. Canât hide behind statistics. Canât ignore new data. My responsibility. â Mordin Solus, ME3
Initially, it might seem as though Mordin chooses to cure the genophage because political circumstances between species change. That is his official story to Shepard, too. If she asks him why heâs so comfortable curing the genophage now, he tells her, âNever change mind. Genophage proper decision at time. New circumstances necessitate course correction.â
However, just like Mordin gives his good logic to Shepard in ME2 but internally carries an emotional perspective, so also does there seem to be more going on with Mordinâs motivations and the genophage here. Like so much of Mordinâs narrative, itâs open to implication and interpretation, but I feel as though so much points to Mordin feeling more than ânew circumstances necessitat[ing] course correctionâ.
First, Shepard asks Mordin if there is more behind his reason to cure the genophage beyond the Reaper invasion and political changes. She suggests there could be additional personal reasons for his investment. He admits there are few salarian scientists interested in the genophage and none with the experience needed for a matter of this magnitude. And then he says, âBut not about them. My work. My job to put it right, to prove I can.â He does have personal stakes.
The second point to note is what Urdnot Bakara says about Mordin. Bakara notices an underlying, unspoken motivation for Mordin tackling the genophage cure. âI sense pain in him [...]. He told me about his work on the genophage. I should consider him an enemy. Yet I think seeing my sisters and I changed something in him.â
Mordin has already been questioning his past. As Padok says, Mordinâs work on the genophage haunted him. Visiting Maelonâs hospital on Tuchanka was influential for Mordin questioning his actions more. Meeting Bakara and the other weakened female krogan from Maelonâs research is the final experience, the catalyst, for him switching to curing the genophage.
Third, Mordin lets it loose his personal for curing the Genophage in the Renegade route. Shepard presses Mordin for why he chooses to cure the genophage after defending it every conversation before now. He wheels around, uncustomarily shouts, and declares with a rare full sentence, âI made a mistake!â
Mordin chooses to leak the intel about Bakaraâs fertility to none other than the Urdnot clan. He is the person who mentions the possibility of a genophage cure to the krogan, even before negotiations officially start between the turians, krogans, and salarians in ME3. He is the person who plants the idea that the genophage can be cured now to the krogan. Mordin chooses to leave the STG and help develop a cure for Bakara on the Normandy. Mordin chooses to die saving the krogan because he made a mistake.
He canât fight back all the logic anymore. His conscience that plagued him for years was right: he made a mistake.
Thatâs his real, uncovered motivation.
Mordin might say he never holds regrets over past choices, but here, in the heat of the moment, he lets loose that his choice was the wrong one. Perhaps he did not have the proper data at the time, but now he shouts he made the wrong choice to recreate the genophage. Suddenly, his calmer conversation to Shepard aboard the Normandy, where he says it is, âmy job to put it right,â gets understood in a fuller context. His conscience is why heâs so dogged to cure the krogan.
And then his internal battle between his head and heart ends on the Shroud. After developing Mordin and letting us know why heâs conflicted, we get the solution to his internal struggles.
THIS is why I love Mordinâs death scenes. THIS is why I adore them. Itâs a beautiful character arc start to end. His character introduction lets us know he created the new genophage. His plot conflict lets us know heâs struggling about his past choices. This struggle is seeded in his divided rationality and compassion. We watch this personal struggle gets developed, exacerbated in his ME2 loyalty mission. It prompts a change in ME3 that is geared more toward his conscience. And there on Tuchanka, right before he dies... he finds resolution to what he has been fighting since before Shepard even met him.
He gets resolution to both the external genophage conflict and his internal war between conscience and logic.
Here, for the first time, Mordin doesnât act with his logic overriding his conscience. He doesnât act with his sentiments clouding his reasoning.Â
Mordin, when he dies, solves his personal problem with the genophage.
Mordin, when he dies, fundamentally impacts the future of the galaxy.
And Mordin, when he dies, finally acts with his logic and conscience working as one.
Renegade Route Death
No time to argue. Cure dispersal imminent. Must counteract sabotage. Stop me if you must. â Mordin Solus, ME3
Iâm a huuuuuge sucker for betrayals and characters dying short of their culminating self-aggrandizement. The fact that you - Commander Shepard - can choose to betray and murder your own friend for his own convictions is astonishing. Despite the fact you brought him on board the Normandy to create the cure, you can turn around and gun him down for that very work. Itâs so impacting we the player can choose to assassinate our dear ally. I find this the most brutal and least chill death in the Mass Effect trilogy Iâve experienced. So yeah, I like the Paragon death better (for reasons Iâll discuss in the next section), but I still find many wonderful and juicy things about the Renegade Route death. This is a great ending to Mordinâs plot arc, too, and wraps up so much about what I adore about his personal narrative.
The first thing I love I already mentioned. The Renegade route has an incredible final conversation between Mordin and Shepard. Only in this route does Mordin shout out unfettered the motivation behind his genophage cure. He doesnât make this confession in the Paragon route... only here.
That one sentence shout âI made a mistake!â is perfect. To point out:
Itâs shocking because Mordin admits he made a mistake! He has been harping throughout his relationship with Shepard that he does not have regrets and he takes charge of situations because âsomeone else might have gotten it wrong.â However, now Mordin turns back on everything he stood for with the genophage modification project. He even says he cannot hide behind statistics, something Shepard accuses him of doing in ME2. Here Mordin is siding resolutely, firmly with the cure and claiming he got his first choice wrong. Itâs a mistake.
How the line is delivered creates additional shock and impact. Itâs not his typical telegraphic sentence, deleting subject position nouns or pronouns. He say the full thing, starting with âIâ. Itâs not âMade a mistake.â Itâs âI made a mistake.â And he says that twice.
This shout is a short resolution for what Mordin will now unwaveringly do. He is willing to die for the krogan to be cured. We now know what his heart feels.
Immediately after his outburst, Mordin explains. New data has shown a cure is a better future than the krogan retaining the genophage. Between his initial raw shout and the subsequent logical countering, Mordin demonstrates his logic and conscience are working together. He feels he has to cure the genophage because he has to fix his errors. He has to clean up his mess, which gave him so much emotional haunting in the past. Thatâs the compassion speaking. And he sees from the current data around him that this is the best solution for the galaxy. Thatâs the logic and moral philosophical framework speaking.
This is why Mordin is willing to die. He didnât have to die to save the krogan, especially in the Renegade version of the Shroud scene. Shepard makes it clear: âWalk away or I will fire.â Commander Shepard will only shoot Mordin if he tries to counteract the sabotage and implement the cure. Sheâll spare him if he steps aside. A Mordin who is working on just logic might not be resolute enough to stand his ground. A Mordin who is working on just compassion would definitely not be resolute enough to stand his ground - heâs overriden his compassion in the past for logic. But Mordin will not back down when both his head and his heart tell him the genophage cure is the correct choice to pursue.
The second thing I find fascinating is that technically Mordin is dying from the consequences of his own moral framework. Thereâs good reason I yabbered up top about his philosophical disposition, folks. The truth of the matter is that Commander Shepard kills Mordin because of a consequentialist framework, too. The end justifies the means. Assassinating one friend to save a galaxy is what it takes, and thatâs what she does. Mordin even seems to realize this; he deduces why Shepard is threatening him, and while he insists this is his choice to make, he doesnât seem too surprised or upset at her ethical reasoning. Itâs because it mirrors what he has done so often in the past.
Itâs to note Mordin never wavers from utilitarianism, either. Again, his logic and his conscience are working as one. For Mordin, it does bring the greatest utility to save the krogan. That is the best choice. Heâs willing to face the consequence of dying to see that end result through. It just so happens that Shepard disagrees, and is also willing to do what it takes to get her desired end result.
And so he dies.
The third thing I adore about the Renegade death is that Mordin dies for his convictions... but he doesnât succeed. He is cut short. He never gets his resolution. He dies, struggling, choking on his own blood, croaking out the words, âNot yet.â With his final painful breaths, he tries to save the krogan anyway.
Mordinâs character arc is complete... sort of. Itâs a powerful result. A powerful moment. He spends years haunted by his inner demons about the genophage. When he finally finds how he can ease his sense of guilt while still maintaining his logic... he dies. Shepard sees to it that he never finishes his quest for internal peace.
I love how the Renegade route doesnât let you forget the consequences of your choice. The writing demonstrates some deontological bias (they donât rub your mistakes in your face in the Paragon route), but itâs a great sentiment. Players feel guilt even when making a consequentialist choice... sort of like what Mordin had to live with. You did what was necessary to save the galaxy. But Shepard throws her pistol aside in disgust and marches away. And while everyone else is crying Mordin as a âhero,â you are sitting there... unable to divulge to anyone else... your dirty little secret.
Paragon Route Death
That was the courage of the highest order, sacrificing himself so our children may live. A thousand years from now weâll probably be singing songs about him. â Urdnot Bakara and Wrex, ME3Â
Now hereâs why I celebrate the Paragon Route more than Mordinâs Renegade death (or the third option where he survives the Shroud encounter). It can be boiled down to three big reasons:
1. The narrative of Mordinâs conflict gets wrapped up beautifully. The dialogue is written for extraordinary impact to get us that sense of painful yet resonant completion. 2. Mordin dies both bravely and not bravely. His choice is brave but his body language is not. It makes it more poignant to watch him knowingly go to his death. 3. Mass Effect is a story about heroism and legendary heroes, and through this route, Mordin becomes that unforgettable hero.
There are other reasons Iâm attracted to it like the music and me preferring the Paragon route as a whole, but Iâll stick with these big three points. These are of course just my opinion, but hereâs why I why I feel it.
1. Wrapping up Mordinâs narrative with beautiful writing and dialogue
Mordin surviving, ironically enough, is the least resolving for me. Sure, Shepard can talk to Mordin in London and assure him he did the right thing on Tuchanka, and Mordin can go help with the Crucible... but his story doesnât feel resolved. The Renegade death has a resolute ending... he got resolve but he failed. The Paragon death has a resolute ending... he got resolve and succeeded. But if Mordin is convinced to follow Linronâs plan and go into hiding, we donât get closure.Â
What is so nice about Mordinâs character arc (compared to many other ME characters) is that his arc is integrally wrapped up with Shepardâs main story. Jacobâs or Samaraâs stories in ME3 are peripheral to Shepardâs central conflict. But Mordin gets caught right in the vortex of one of the most crucial alliances in history. To lack closure in his character arc also means a lack of closure for what happens in Shepardâs experiences. If Mordin decides heâll keep himself alive and maybe cure the genophage later, we donât get a consummation of logic and compassion; we donât get resolution of his internal character struggles. We donât complete the plot arc that has been building for two games. And if Mordin decides that he might cure the genophage âlater,â then we donât get any real resolution about the fate of the krogans, either. Act One in ME3 never âends.â Itâs left up in the air, we move onto a different conflict, and we can only speculate about what the hell happens later. Nothing gets resolved.
The Paragon death, as I see it, is the ultimate resolution to Mordinâs narrative journey. It takes everything we love about him - from his odd little inconsequential quirks to the center of his character conflict - and gives us a final wrap-up. He turns about one-eighty, finds his internal peace, and becomes a hero that saves an entire civilization.
Like the Renegade death, Mordin enters this with his head and heart working as one. Here, Mordin isnât even pressured by someone threating him. Here, he offers his own life up: itâs both the most ethical thing to do by his moral framework, and itâs the one that gives his conscience peace. And after seeing Mordin so long tormented by the genophage... we finally see this character... achieve resolution.
He implements the cure. He stops the sabotage. And when he hears the speakers announce the cure will disperse over Tuchanka... he smiles. Even though he knows he will die in the next few seconds, this is the first and last time we will ever see Mordin at peace.
Next, the writers work up the moment to Mordinâs demise in a powerful way. Iâm accustomed to seeing characters die after they give their catch phrase or one final powerful quote. What makes Mordinâs death so emotional is that we donât get one phrase by which we can remember him. The writers give us three blows with three final quotes to evoke our emotions. Boom. One fond and important memory of him. Boom. The next. Boom. And he is gone.
The first âboomâ is mentioning seashells. It hurts not just because itâs a funny moment you share with him. It hurts because heâs talking about what he wanted to do after the war ended. He and Shepard both know heâll never get to study those seashells; heâs going to die in action. This turns a humorous conversation into a painful reminder heâs walking into his own death.
The next âboomâ is giving Shepard his catch phrase. She offers condolences when she sees heâs about to go on the suicide mission, but he responds heâs not sorry. âHad to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong.â These are his final words to her for which she will remember him. These are his intended âlast words.â Note that writing writing works well in threes, and this is the third time the âhad to be meâ quote appears, too!
The last âboomâ is when he literally dies in an explosion. The first song Mordin sings to Shepard becomes the last song we hear. And he doesnât even finish the line. Weâre deprived of the songâs conclusion. âI am the very model of a --â Gone.
That song, âI am the very model of a scientist salarian,â is the tune he sings about himself and his lifeâs work. Itâs his favorite song to sing. Itâs a cheerful summary and celebration of what he can accomplish. And here, even as he dies, even as he canât finish his lyrics, he does the greatest and most powerful thing he has ever done. He shows exactly what a scientist salarian can do.
Just talk about the perfect way to kill a character: he dies singing.
2. Mordin didnât die âbravelyâ
Iâve seen other people talk about this, too. Iâm just going to link you to a wonderful analysis on Reddit and quote what Iâve seen. It speaks for itself. I donât need to add anything to it.
It wasn't that it was a brave sacrifice. It was by definition, of course, but it was far more than that. To me, I thought Mordin's sacrifice was powerful because it wasn't brave. I'll explain:
From the moment we meet Mordin on Omega, he's described in terms of being willing to help people, but being murderously savage when he needs to be. He openly speaks about killing surrendering foes, and is generally violent in nature along with his helpful spirit. However, as you go through ME2, you realize he's more than just violent/helpful. He's a complicated person who has done a lot in his short life. He's responsible for the modified Genophage, and he's served in STG. He's obviously brilliant. He loves art, as evidenced by his singing. But when he breaks down on your mission to Tuchanka over the deaths of test subjects, you get the feeling that though he knows what he did was necessary, it eats him up inside.
When you go through ME3, he's dedicated his life to making things right. He's your mole in STG to get Eve out, and he works tirelessly to find a cure for a disease he helped create. Once on Tuchanka, he decides to give his life for the cure to occur. Here I see what's most sad about Mordin. He's not just a tough, violent scientist who is ultimately out for the greater good. As he's going up the elevator, he's visibly nervous. He takes deep breaths. Once he's uploading the cure, he's singing and his voice is wavering. Up until the moment he dies, he's exceedingly vulnerable, his voice nearly breaking. He's scared of dying, but he knows it's for the good of the krogan, and the galaxy. Few characters, with the exception of Garrus, were as stripped down in terms of their psyche as Mordin was. You met both of them and their rough exterior, but by the end of ME3 you saw the cracks and learned who they really were, what they really felt. It's pretty amazing that a video game is able to give this sort of intimacy.
EDIT: And as I'm reading this again, it strikes me: He's also afraid that his work, the genophage, might never be cured. In ME3, his slogan takes on new meaning. "Someone else might have gotten it wrong." Someone else might have tried to cure the genophage, and been unable, or wouldn't have done it fast enough. He's worried, terrified that his legacy wouldn't be working for the greater good, but working for injustice. He realizes by the end of ME2 that his work, while necessary at the time, was wrong, and he devotes his life to fixing it. "Someone else might have gotten it wrong" is his entire purpose, his fears, and his desires all rolled into one.
Characters donât tend to die like that in stories. In the Renegade death, you get a more âtypicalâ end - a character dying boldly for what he believes in. âStop me if you must.â Weâre used to heroic sacrifices, bravely standing there at the end of it all, in stories. Weâre also used to characters screaming and dying in cowardice. But weâre not used to seeing a character heroically choosing to die while at the same time being so terrified.
That just adds an extra layer of emotions as we watch him flinch with each explosion... watch when that next explosion takes him out.
3. Mass Effect is a story about heroes
This is the main reason why I believe I prefer the Paragon route over the Renegade. As juicy as Shepardâs betrayal is, it lacks the emotional resonance of Mordin choosing to die in the tower. Sure, I love reading about playersâ guilt and whether or not they can even stomach shooting Mordin... but it canât beat the emotional resonance of a hero being made.
What made the first two Mass Effect games so exciting and resonant upon completion is that they are the stories of a hero winning against overwhelming odds. Commander Shepard manages to save Council space by defeating Saren and Sovereign in ME - something highly unlikely, but satisfyingly completed. Shepard again beats overwhelming odds in ME2 by outlasting the Suicide Mission and coming out with her team in heroic glory. Itâs because Shepard manages to make it through overwhelming odds that weâre left cheering, weâre left excited, weâre left emotionally resonant. I adored the feel of besting the universe. Itâs so enjoyably badass!
Mass Effect 3 is different. Donât get me wrong - I love the game and will defend it start to end. I will defend the end of ME3 far more than almost anyone else I know. I love the whole trilogy. But upon first playthrough, ME3 can feel off. Everything feels more subdued, more weighted. Thereâs an overhanging sense that the ending wonât be perfect - and indeed, the ending is not optimal. Huge sacrifices are made by the end of the game, and Shepardâs final choice regarding the Reapers results in bittersweet results. Itâs not the bang-and-win feel weâve been accustomed to in the other games. Itâs painfully real. The consequences bear down on us, and we donât feel like we come out of the story heroically. Shepard doesnât storm through the finish line... she crawls.
So even though Commander Shepard emerges a âheroâ in the main storyline, you donât feel it. You feel âwrongâ because she doesnât overwhelmingly bash down the baddies like in the first two games. Donât get me wrong - I love bittersweet stories, too, and thatâs what I usually write - but it will always feel a little âoffâ to me that I donât unwaveringly save the day in ME3. And yeah, my first time I even chose the one and only ending where Shepard lives, and it still felt uncomfortable.
Because that sense of grandiose heroism gets lost in the final cutscenes, I have had to look elsewhere to get my emotional âsatisfactionâ and fill of heroes in ME3. The quarian and geth conflict has great moments, but because itâs such a group effort, itâs harder for me to feel as though someone like Tali explodes as a hero (she does amazing things and grows, yes, but itâs not that bang-punch-hero feel). If Mordin leaves the Shroud alive or dies without implementing the cure, we get yet another solemn bittersweet ending like Shepardâs "solutionâ with the Reapers.
But if Mordin dies out in a bang, I get my quota of grandiose heroism. I get that glorious vibe which made me fall in love with ME and continue to love it in ME2.
Heâs staggeringly altered the course of the universe. A thousand years of krogan infertility are reversed by the same species that first maimed them. Mordin undoubtedly becomes one of the most influential individuals in the galaxy. This quirky, emotionally struggling doctor you meet on Omega turns from a debatable war criminal to an instant hero.
Krogans celebrate him. He has become the savior for an entire species. Mordin becomes a legend immediately. Krogan will sing ballads about his deeds for millennia to come. The firstborn prince of the leading krogan clan is named after him: Urdnot Mordin. That extraordinary growth of a character, ending when he a legend... itâs powerful. Itâs more powerful than a betrayal. Itâs more powerful than saying, âMaybe Iâll cure them later.â Here and now, we see the jaw-dropping effects of his conscience and his logic working as one.
So that is why I still scream about Mordinâs plot arc even now.
Itâs incredible.
Itâs exactly what I want to see in storytelling - from its solid structure, to its depth, to its deep questions, to its impacting emotionality.
The character is set up with an interesting internal conflict that has galaxy-wide implications. After watching him struggle between two sides of his psyche, he finds a way to resolve them both and do a one-eighty, undoing his own greatest accomplishment. He takes on a sense of astounding heroism in his final act and dies with âthe courage of the highest orderâ.
Commander Shepard will always be my hero. But with how they wrote Mordinâs story, I canât help but gape at him in awe as a hero, too.
#long post#non-UT#Mass Effect#Mordin Solus#Mass Effect 3#ME3#ME 3#ME#my analysis#there Peach there you go that's the analysis it's almost 6700 words you're welcome#wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee#don't get me started on the music in that scene#or other aspects I love about Mordin#I WILL WRITE APPRECIATION POSTS#FOR ANY AND *ALL* OF THE ME DORKS <3 <3 <3#down to Anoleis haha#seriously though if ANYONE WANTS TO TALK MASS EFFECT I *SO WILL* OKAY

1969 Dodge Charger R/T Revived After Near Disaster
It took Mark Stornant nearly 20 years to get his 1969 Charger R/T on the roadâand just the blink of an eye for it to be wiped out almost entirely. In the fall of 2016, while Mark and his son Tyler were heading home on the last drive of the season, the beautiful R4 Bright Red Mopar was sideswiped by a pickup truck trying to overtake a slow-moving semi-truck on a narrow two-lane road. He crossed double yellow lines, putting the truck on the same parcel of pavement as the Charger.
Fortunately, no one was hurt in the collision, but the driverâs side of Markâs car looked much like the Charger in Bullitt after it rubbed sheetmetal with Steve McQueenâs Mustang and got smacked around by those roadside guardrails. The crash didnât send Markâs car careening into a gas station as in the movie, but plenty of damage was done, leaving him to nearly start over on car that had been a labor of love for his family.
It started back in 1992, when Mark bought it from the second owner. He paid $3,500 for the Charger, a real XS29L-code R/T with the A33 Track Pack, which included a 3.54-geard Dana 60 rear axle and Hemi four-speed transmission. The original owners were reportedly a pair of twins who used the Track Pack as intended on the dragstrip.
At some point the rear wheel studs sheared off on one of the axles with predictable results that included, among other things, body damage when the quarter-panel crashed onto the tarmac. And that was before the twins blew the original engine. The car was unceremoniously pushed into a carport and left exposed to the unforgiving Michigan climate for the next 13 years or so.
In that time a number of the original, hard-to-find front-end parts were stripped off the car. The second owner got the car running, replacing the original engine with a date-code-correct service replacement block and a mildly built short-block. He also replaced the front-end sheetmetal and added a 1968 Charger grille because used 1969 grilles were already in short supply in the 1980s and repros werenât even a glint in OERâs eye.
âThe guy ended up respraying the car red, but it was a quick-and-dirty job,â says Mark. âIt was clear the replacement body panels were green because of the lousy or nonexistent prep work, and the quarter-panel damage was never addressed. They just sprayed over the dents.â
Not Bad for the Rust Belt
âIt was a runner, but far from a driver,â says Mark. âBut Iâd loved 1969 Chargers since I was young, and I could see the potential in this one. The rust wasnât as bad is it could have been for a Michigan car.â
For B-bodies of that vintage, anything less than complete, corrosion-induced structural collapse was not âthat badâ in the Rust Belt. There were a couple of holes in the floorboard and some expected rust spots on exterior panels, but all those years spent in the carport absolutely dissolved the trunk floor.
Work and family obligations prevented Mark from diving into the restoration for the next seven years or so, but he used the time to accumulate as many parts as possible. The car was less than 30 years old at the time, so there were still some good used and even N.O.S. parts out there, including a pair of N.O.S. front fenders, an N.O.S. hood, and a good used grille.
Around 2000, work on the car commenced in a meaningful way, with friend Randy Oswald tackling the major bodywork, including hanging new quarter-panels, and John Schultz, who led the way on the mechanical side. A rotisserie was constructed for the unitized chassis, and the team did their best with early repro sheetmetal and making due with used or restored original parts when reproductions werenât available.
âA lot of that early repopped sheetmetal wasnât great,â says Mark. âThe trunk floor panel, for example, didnât have the drain holes stamped in it, so we had to do that and other things. That was just the state of the industry at the time.â
Mark had worked in a body shop before beginning a career with his regional water and light utility, and he took on the task of block-sanding and painting the car himself, while another friend, Doug Jones, helped revamp the black vinyl interior with new upholstery, a new headliner, and new carpet. Mark himself restored the instrument panel.
The car boasts a number of period day-two mods, including a vintage Stewart-Warner tachometer lashed to the steering column, the same kind Mopar legend Dick Landy used. Stornantâs wife, Lori, found it in a milk crate at a swap meet more than 20 years ago.
âIâd been looking for that very model myself for years,â says Mark. âAnd she pulled it out of the crate and simply said, âIs this what youâre looking for?ââ
More apparent than the tach, which is wired into the dashboard to illuminate and dim with the gauges, are the vintage 15-inch Torq-Thrust wheels.
He says, âThat was another thing Iâd been looking for for a long time. I wanted the wider, 8.5-inch-wide rear wheels to fill out the fenders, and saw them on a 1964 Chrysler Newport, which was parked near a water-main break that was being repaired by my utility crew.â
Mark approached the owner later and purchased the wheels, then spent about 25 hours per rim to restore them. Up front, 15x7s roll on G70-15 Polyglas reproduction tires; in the rear, the coveted 15Ă8.5 wheels are wrapped in L60 rubber.
Mark also added a set of new, but period-correct, Gabriel HiJackers air shocks to ensure adequate quarter-panel clearance, giving the car the tough stance that was as popular on the boulevard in the 1970s as yellow slapper bars and snorkel hoodscoops.
And as was the case back then, the strong stance provides additional clearance for a deep-sump oil pan protruding beneath the K-member.
âIt was on the car when I bought it, and I thought it was a great holdover from the era,â says Mark. âWith the wheels, it just looks right.â
The stout short-block to which the oil pan is attached is filled with a forged crankshaft (undercut 0.010 inch), forged pistons bored 0.030 over, and a Comp Camsâ Purple Power PP292H hydraulic flat-tappet camshaft, with 0.509/0/509-inch lift, 292/299 degrees duration, and a tight 108 lobe separation angle that gives the RB big-block a head-turning lope.
The engine is finished off with an Edelbrock Torker II intake manifold and Edelbrock carb, TTI long-tube headersâalthough Mark admits a set of period, white Hooker headers would look betterâand an electronic ignition conversion. An electronic distributor was also added to support the tach drive. Mark modified the pulley arrangement with a Hemi crank pulley and other minor changes that give the drive system a more uniform appearance.
He says, âTypically, it looks like somethingâs missing in the system when thereâs no air conditioning or power steering, because there are pulley grooves with no belts. This arrangement makes the front of the engine look more complete.â
Seamless Repairs
The Charger finally hit the road again in 2010, and Mark and his family enjoyed it for the next six years, until that fateful day in November 2016.
âIt was devastating,â he says. âWe had spent so much time on the car and, just like that, it all changed.â
Fortunately, the car was properly insured. Hagerty, the underwriter, deemed the Charger repairable, per the policyâs Guaranteed Value coverage. It would pay up to 75 percent of the agreed value to make the car whole again. Markâs next step was finding a shop to do the repairs.
The search led to Wingâs Auto Art in Ionia, Michigan, where Nyle Wing has specialized in muscle car restorations for the better part of three decades. He was initially cautious about the project, as such a job clashed with his shopâs standard process of complete, tear-down restos. He took the job, which involved replacing all the driver-side sheetmetal and painting only about half of the car. That meant the paint job would involve painstaking color-matching for a seamless blend.
âThe result was nothing short of perfect,â says Mark. âItâs impossible to tell the car has been only partially repainted. The blending is completely invisible, and I couldnât have been happier when I saw the car after it was completed.â
If the car were a Cougar, this is probably the place in the story where weâd make a joke about the cat having used up two of its nine lives. That wordplay doesnât work so well with a Charger. We could also give a brief sermon about the importance of properly insuring your muscle car, but weâll skip all that to focus on the fact that this vintage Charger R/T is back among the living and Mark is back behind the wheel.
Hereâs to hoping that R4 Bright Red paint doesnât need anything more than an occasional microfiber wipe-down from here on out.
At a Glance 1969 Charger R/T Owned by: Mark and Lori Stornant Restored by: Restored initially by the owner and Randy Oswald, John Schultz, and Doug Jones; collision repair by Wingâs Auto Art, Ionia, MI Engine: 440ci/375hp Magnum V-8 Transmission: New Process A-833 4-speed manual Rearend: Dana 60 with 3.54 gears and Sure Grip Interior: Black vinyl bucket seat with center console Wheels: 15Ă7 front, 15Ă8.5 rear American Racing Torq-Thrust Tires: G70-15 front, L60-15 rear Goodyear Polyglas reproduction Special parts: A33 Track Pack (Hemi 4-speed, Dana 60 with 3.54 gears, Hurst shifter, 7-blade cooling fan, 26-inch radiator with shroud), Edelbrock intake and carburetor, TTI headers
The 1968-1970 Chargerâs distinctive âflying buttressâ roof was reportedly a design compromise between a full fastback and a conventional rear window profile, allowing for less-expensive rear interior trim. The 1966-1967 Chargerâs full fastback styling required more detailed and expensive interior treatment
Chrysler manufactured the RB-series big-block from 1959-1979, with all variantsâ383, 413, 426 and 440âsharing a 3.750-inch stroke. The 440 was introduced in 1966, and the 375hp Magnum version was standard on the 1969 Charger R/T.
Along with a lumpy Comp Cams Purple Power hydraulic camshaft, this restomod RB optimizes airflow with an Edelbrock Torker II aluminum manifold (stealthily painted engine color) and a contemporary Edelbrock carb.
According to the fender tag, the black vinyl interior (up-level SE models received leather seat inserts) was originally equipped with a Tick-Tock-Tac, but it wasnât there when Mark Stornant purchased the car. That provided the perfect excuse for him to add a vintage Stewart-Warner tach to the steering column.

Offset Hurst shifters for Track Pack Chargers can be difficult to locate. This is an original. The iconic Pistol Grip shifter didnât arrive until 1970.
Vintage Torq-Thrust wheels show red-painted 11-inch brake drums through the spokes. Disc brakes were optional on the R/T, and this car was ordered originally without them. Somewhat tall G70 front rubber helps give the carâs nose a little lift for adequate oil pan clearance.
Grim to Great
After the fall 2016 crash, the Charger entered Wingâs Auto Art in need of all new driver-side sheetmetal. The saving grace was that the accident didnât injure anyone.
Along with outer sheetmetal, the inner rear wheelhouse needed to be replaced, too. The replacement sheetmetal all came from AMD via Roseville Moparts.
Only about half of the car was repainted, but the color blending by Wingâs Auto Art was superb. After the car was reassembled there was no trace that it ever had as much as a door ding, let alone the entire driverâs side replaced.

Best insurance for Male 18-24?
What is the best type of insurance for a male 18-24. There is a basic prepaid one for $1200 (upfront) but my rates double if I get a speeding ticket etc.. Then there is the traditional one from my bank but that's $300 a month and I can't do that. What type should I be looking for? Also, is it worth it to get the cheap insurance if my rates could potentially double? Could I fight them doubling my rates. I don't plan on speeding but wow. 04-06 Hyundai Elantra GLS/GT.""

Car insurance question?
The other week, my dumb *** relative backed into my parked car. Essentially, he could of saved himself two grand if he bothered to turn and look like he was supposed to. My question and PLEASE only answer with relative/helpful information: If I don't use a rental during the time my vehicle gets repaired, will it lower his costs with his provider? Or will it not matter? I only ask because, though an idiot, is still family (plus his parents are being ******* cause their kid can do no wrong if you know what I mean). So if not using the rental will help with his rates/etc. let me know.""

Car insurance quotes?
i have just passed my driving test & was looking at insurance quotes on different comparison websites . i am a 36 year old man with 4 kids & wife & need to get a car to further my career . i got a quote for a 1997 R reg 800cc Daewoo matiz and will be fitting an alarm as well as keeping it locked in my garage overnight but the cheapest quote a can find is 1282 a year fully comp & paying up front .I also got a quote for a 1998 S reg 1.4 Peaugeot 306 Meridian & the quote I received for this car was 942 for the year again payment upfront . the problem I have is that with the latter quote for the Peaugeot is that there wasn't any alarm on the quote & it was to be parked in the carpark next to my house . So why oh why is a car that is less desirable & has a smaller engine costing 340 more even though it has an alarm & locked away over night .
