Suffice to say I really enjoyed Alien: Romulus. The film had me hooked within the first 10 minutes by introducing a new angle with androids and the way they’re perceived by their human counterparts. To me, regardless of the writer/direction’s intention, Andy is an allegory for the experience of an autistic person who is also a member of a marginalized community. I prefaced this with to me because I have long been obsessed with androids and always associate them with the experience of being on the spectrum.

I found it refreshing to see an autistic-coded android character who didn’t go the route of cold, calculating and robotic. I love Star Trek's Data as much as the next android enjoyer, but that trope often reads to me as perpetuating the idea that autistic people cannot grasp human emotions & depicts low empathy people as sub-human. Andy’s behavior (prior to the module upload anyway) struck me as warm and kind but with a lot of struggle to connect with people or behave the way others around him expect a "normal person" to behave. I do enjoy rep for low empathy folks, but this depiction of an autistic person* (imo, anyway*) felt closer to experiences I can relate to.

I also think the movie handled the autism allegory well in that even people who treated Andy well- that being Rain- infantilize him. It’s only when Andy is more than capable that people stop speaking to him like a child— but at that point, they begin alienating him in a different way. Now Andy is intimidating and can't be trusted. I think that Rain loves him, and I think she means well, but I think that's also true of a lot of people with autistic adults in their lives who they treat like children. It's not often done with malicious intent, but it still happens.

I myself am still trying to come to a full conclusion on how I felt about Andy’s whole arc. I can say that it was the most impactful part of the movie for me. Loved that the whole thing ended on a hopeful note. The green light on his central processor chip almost had me in tears in the theater.

& with that, the end of Romulus was the kicker for me that cemented as my second favorite Alien movie. Visceral, intense horror and fighting for survival, insurmountable odds and claustrophobia-- but by the skin of your fucking teeth, you make it through.

Oh, and the xenomorph parts were great too.

But genuinely, I’m still sitting on how I felt about all of the birth and sexual violence and frequently yonic imagery. I have a lot of thoughts about it but right now it’s all soup. I liked it. I like abstract and visceral eroticism. And deeply unsettling but well-placed allegories for trauma. The way facehuggers keep you breathing remains for whatever reason the most unsettling thing xenomorphs do. Idk what it is, the intense forced belly breathing just gives me the fuckin heebie jeebies.

I guess a lot of people didn't like the hybrid baby design? I thought it was great. Folks are so familiar with the xenomoprh's design at this point, they're more cool than they are scary. And hot depending on who you ask. But the hybrid? The way they fell into a weird uncanny valley with the humanoid face and the splitting humanoid tongue, the ghostly pale skin... I thought it was a smart direction to go for making xenomorphs freaky again.

comics as an art form make me insane. they’re so difficult to do well. there’s so many different ways to make sequential art work and most of them are deeply unintuitive. onomatopoeia that feels completely ridiculous to put down often reads seamlessly. panels on a page become a fractally nested image composition challenge that’s only possible to lose because if you do a good job no one will notice. you have to direct the readers’ eyes on a specific path across the page but also account for the fact that they won’t follow it. comic time isn’t linear. if the order of events isn’t crystal clear the story becomes incomprehensible. sometimes you need to do this on purpose. all this for a medium almost universally considered less effective than animation and less respectable than plain text. even its own name doesn’t take it seriously

"are you tired, kenji?" you ask, your hand traveling once again, now to the broad of his exposed back, and making circular motions around his skin, listening to the way his breath got steady.

"i'm never tired for you, baby" he answers in the sweetest tone, contrasting his husky voice that he uses to talk in interviews. he props his chin on your thigh to look up at you with those pretty puppy eyes and his cute smile.

your heart swells with love for him. dragging your thumbs through his cheekbones, both of you get lost in each others eyes for a little, before you whisper. "come here" and he obeys. standing from the floor, he takes a seat besides you on the expensive couch, and smiles into your lips as you drag him in for a kiss.

the kiss gets more heated with every second, and your hands started to caress his body until they're found inside ken's trousers.

it didn't take long before the room was filled with his moans as you stroke him fast and steady. he keeps on holding you, kissing you desperately as you were going to disappear. "please baby" he whimpered against your lips, slightly thrusting his hips into your closed fist.

"wanna cum, kenji?" you ask, nonetheless, smiling when he desperately nods. "do it baby. make a mess for me" he moans before kissing you again, finally allowing himself to release thick ropes of cum that end un shooting on his bare chest.

while he regulated his breathing, you placed kisses along his chest, giving sweet caresses to his waist with your thumb. he speaks. "can we make love?" he asks with those begging eyes.

“I don't have any training stuff or games tomorrow” he replied before you even asked, and then flashed one of his charming smiles. "please?" he insists and you sigh.

like all his fans, you can't help but fall for his charms. but unlike them, only you can see the great ken sato cry from pleasure.

So I think I may have cracked the code. Listening to Clara Bow w this context in mind from the 4th, 9th, and 10th 🎃 messages makes the lyrics cut even deeper and explains the purpose of the anthology.

What Taylor is essentially saying is that above all else she is proud of her humanity. “Human. Human. Human.” “Flesh and blood.” Unlike some ppl in Hollywood like greedy big suits (cough SB^2 cough Big Machine cough) she’s managed to keep her humanity intact and didn’t let these negative experiences corrupt her or turn her bitter. She was able to find peace and courage in spite of it. And she’s saying I am abt to come out of the closet and while I am hopeful I’m also a little fearful. But isn’t that an amazing thing? Because being fearful, sad, furious, insecure, hopeful—these experiences are unique to humans! “Your heart beats red and hot and furious in your chest.”

“And most importantly, they will know about the human heart.” THIS is the purpose of the anthology. This is why she released 31 (13 backwards) songs for her fans to dissect and decode. Bc she wants them to understand that she’s not a god. She’s a flawed human just like the rest of us.

I think there’s a very good chance that THIS is what her movie is going to be about. Her journey out of the closet and all the hardship that came along w it and helping other ppl to understand the human heart. And I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a memoir that was released w it—“the professor said to write what you know.” And it makes sense too why the manuscript lyrics match perfectly w the all too well short film. Bc they’re talking abt the exact same thing!! She has a relationship w a much older man, experiences heartbreak, heals, and then writes abt it in a book—the story of us AKA the manuscript.

And this is why 🎃 kept referencing the story of us. I couldn't make sense of it a few months ago but now in hindsight it all makes perfect sense. Message in a bottle was probably a red tv vault track for this reason too. Bc the message in a bottle is the manuscript. The puzzle pieces really do all fall right into place.
