The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones

This 1812 epistolary tale of a Lutheran priest plagued by the sinister confession of malevolent creature who appeared in his church one Sunday service captures what the current vampire horror revival is all about.

Each chapter walks us up to the final days before the priest, Arthur Beaucarne, disappears from history, and the end of that road is so incredibly satisfying.

All of my thoughts are spoiler-filled, so once you've grabbed a copy and read it for yourself, meet me below the line, where this book is currently taken up residence rent-free.

Content warning for racism, settler colonialism, blood and violence, and child sexual assault.

He turned him into a rat-man! And I know technically he's a groundhog or whatever but listen. The rats that came back to the church, the ones that infested it after all those bodies were burnt inside, that colonized it???

Arthur is a symbol of colonization. He doesn't want to think about the things he did to get where he is now because its all in the past now. He's a different person.

This is the exact reasoning we see against reparations and landback initiatives today. We're different people. Those were our ancestors. Its in the past now.

So Good Stab turns him into the very rats that were in the walls. A metaphor for infestation that Arthur can understand. I love love love it. And of course, at the end, his descendant finally killing him? Perfection.

There is so much here that is good that it will take me awhile to really process it.

I loved that we see Arthur making excuses to justify every little thing he does because God will forgive a little alcohol, a little gluttony, a little cigarette. A little genocide.

Also the way that he talks about not understanding sharing bacon with a starving dog when you are starving yourself is just so on the nose but its meant to be because it goes over our lutheran mass murderers head and hammers home his internal ontology of the world.

That's not to say I didn't have a good chuckle. Good Stab's comment about the trappers smelling ripe af even before becoming a blood-sucking monster made me chuckle out loud.

If you're in your dracula daily, nosferatu, interview with the vampire, vampire horror revival era like me, this is the perfect book.
