Thoughts on Gin and Kunikidarling?
OOooooooo boy
Gin I absolutely adore and wish we could see more. I'm constantly impressed by Gin. I talk about how much I love Gin a bit here but I can definitely go more in depth. We don't see a lot of Gin in the canon, honestly. But we know she doesn't have an ability. We also know she's a Black Lizard commander. Not just... some kid in the mafia, but a commander. And a highly skilled assassin in her own right. Like. Trained-by-Verlaine assassin. You don't get a command position in the mafia by being a one trick pony. Gin can strategize, lead a group, and is fully operable for stealth solo missions, hence the whole assassin bit. She's respected. I also think its kind of interesting how different her role is compared to her brother, who is more... flashy, comparatively. They come from quite similar backgrounds, other than Ryuunosuke having an ability, but Gin seems much more confident and assured in her skillsets. I just think she's really neat.
Beast Gin is really cool, too. She's one of the characters that seems the most different between the two universes, which is kind of interesting considering she's in the mafia in both. However Beastzai seems to have recognized the incredible skillsets Gin possessed in the original universe, and saw how all the same things that make Gin a good commander (strategy, independent thinking, etc) and assassin (remaining under-the-radar and nondescript while still constantly aware) make her a good secretary to the boss. Her talents are recognized as intrinsically useful and necessary in both universes. Like... if she was only useful to motivate Ryuunosuke, she could have just been anywhere in the mafia, kept under watch. But she's given an important position, because its an absolute waste not to. I think we should talk about how capable Gin is more because she kicks serious ass in every skillset and also because I just think she's cool.
As for Kunikida, all that needs to be said is that i'm in love with him. Of course i'll say more anyway though. Because I love him. Mr. "While we are an Armed Detective Agency." We joke about Kunikida being rigid and uptight in all such things with his carefully laid out schedule in his little book that operates his life, but when you get down to it Kunikida really is pretty adaptive. Whatever wrench is thrown in his plans, he always responds and takes action immediately, which I think is pretty admirable. Sure, he'd probably like to stay on schedule, but he's quick to recognize when things are simply not going to go his way and he needs to adapt. Like, you know, getting his ability ripped out of him by a fog and having to instead fight his way back to the agency to figure out what the hell is going on. Kunikida is constantly constantly proving how resourceful he is. He can have whatever he wants when he needs it with his ability, but is also still incredibly limited considering what he has. And while he's always ready for a fight and quite talented at it, he never jumps to anything that will do lasting damage. I'll always find the way he tends towards that grapple gun interesting and all the ways he can use it.
There's also Kunikida's tendency towards just kind of... making sure people are cared for, and taking responsibility for things he was involved in (whether it should be his responsibility or not). Case in point being Rokuzo, the boy from the Azure Messenger arc, that Kunikida had been basically providing for on the side because he felt bad about being involved in the case that killed his dad. He'd all but adopted the boy before Nobuko killed Rokuzo. (Hey, how much of the bit with Aya in the subway tunnel do you think felt like a flashback to Rokuzo for Kunikida? Poor guy has seen this happen too many times. Just let him adopt kids in peace.) He checks in on Katai, too. Once you're under Kunikida's protection just once, it kind of seems like that's a for-life deal, and I think that's a really neat aspect of him. Another way of looking at it kind of feels like his work is his life, but that work is not limited to the Detective Agency. Its his ideals coming through. I like him.

Behind the Scenes of The Star Beast - Part One
Excerpt from Benjamin Cook's Star Beast Set Visit in DWM 597:
There’s a buzz in the air in Camden Town tonight as the market vendors shut up shop. Businessmen wait on the bridge by the lock. Students rush from the Starbucks, buskers busk. Tourists jostle for a selfie spot, next to the bronze statue of Amy. At the northernmost point of Camden High Street, a man with a mohawk folds away his cardboard placard (‘HELP A PUNK TO GET DRUNK’) and heads across the road to buy a Red Bull from the 24/7. Three men in North Face jackets, one on a stepladder, yank a tarpaulin sheet off a police box. Security guards change shifts. On Gin Alley, people are still queuing for meat and noodles. A woman in a Kermit tee leaves Oddballs carrying a unicycle. Rose Noble buys a bagful of eyes. Outside Cyberdog, two silver robots, three times the height of the average human, stand vigil. A different crowd is gathered here too, dripping in scarves, bowties, and pinstripes. A dog barks. A neon sign flickers. David Tennant arrives. Some people cheer. Others clap. A boy in a beanie hat drops his falafel. An ambulance siren wails in the distance. Two-hundred phones are held aloft. “What a rock star,” says Doctor Who’s executive producer, Phil Collinson. “I still can’t quite believe David is back on the Doctor Who set.” Neither can he. “It’s mental,” says David, grinning. “We’ve got three more months of this.” It’s mid-May 2022, and he’s donned the vintage Converse once more to play the Doctor, alongside Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, in three hour-long 60th Anniversary Specials. They began filming in Cardiff last week. A few days ago, he recorded his half of the regeneration from Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.
I’ll post additional parts in the coming months with the #whoBtsBeast tag. The full episode list is [ here ]

Silver Lining by maxxstrom
Summary: Finding out that a lie has pervaded years of your life isn’t exactly a great way to end a mission, especially when it results in complete ignorance about your own biology. At twenty years old, Akutagawa had thought he was done learning about himself, but that doesn’t seem to be the case at all. As it turns out, he hardly knows a thing.
Alternatively, asexual “beta” Akutagawa finds out that he’s actually an omega and has to figure out how to deal with his first ever heat (a series of unfortunate events that ends with Aku getting railed within an inch of his life).
{One Shot}

If you’re brave enough to love the ones you hate the hardest (you might find home) by bloodyhalefire
Summary: For people like Gin and Ryuunosuke, things like love, comfort, and contentment have never been anything more than pipe dreams.
However, when Gin returns home from work one night to find Atsushi and Ryuu sleeping together on the sofa, she wonders if maybe they aren’t as unattainable as she thought.

I'll call your name by caramelt
Summary: “Of all places to discuss the case,” Atsushi said as they made their way back to the busy crowd, voice getting louder with every step as he fought to compete with the noise around them. He had finished his chazuke not long ago. “Why a summer festival?”
“Has it not occurred to you that I'm taking you out on a date?”
Oh. Oh.

Basically Akutagawa and Atsushi get together fluff.

I Love You (deeply) by SapphireSunstone
Summary: Akutagawa almost wishes he hadn’t heard it.
He wishes that there wasn’t another figure pressed up against him underneath his own bedsheets. Wishes that he hadn’t invited Atsushi to stay for the night when he realised how dark it had gotten. Wishes he hadn’t opened the door when the were-tiger had knocked.
Because now he has to deal with this.

Series: Adventures in Partnership by guyfierimpreg
Summary: Partnership is a rocky road, but with Atsushi ramming down the clutch and Akutagawa working the shifter, they might actually get somewhere.

Stay by Glenraven
Summary: The port is loud with the caws of sea birds, the creak and clang of cranes and shipping containers, the rough calls of workers. Atsushi’s ears pick up all of the cacophony but parse none of it. All he can focus on are the words spoken by the dark figure in front of him, quietly, almost as though he is of half a mind not to be heard.
“Go out with me.”
Atsushi blinks. His ears don’t lie, but this isn’t making any sense.
“What?”
Akutagawa growls. “You heard me. Go out with me. This weekend. Let’s go somewhere.”
A hint of red crawls over Akutagawa’s cheeks. He wouldn’t blush if this were just a joke, would he?
{One Shot}
Rated - Teen & Up
and it was you by spirallings
Summary: Rashomon was Ryuunosuke's armor and his clothing created Rashomon. Even when his relationship with Atsushi bloomed into something more intimate, there was always that hesitation, that fear; to be vulnerable was to leave himself open for pain and hurt.
And then there wasn't anymore.
{One Shot}

i just wanna know you by Wordless_Writer
Summary: "If he knew more, he supposed, about Akutagawa, about his pasts, his tics, his wishes... he wouldn't be having such a hard time right now. He'd know what to get him. How to... congratulate him...
Akutagawa hadn't been at the 'we defeated the guild' party and hadn't been mentioned in the local newspaper. When people approached Atsushi on the street, they never mentioned the person who had helped him. Who had been right next to him in the very picture that was published but cut out from the shot.
Atsushi didn't like Akutagawa... but he had helped so much... he deserved some..."

With the Warmth of Your Arms, you Saved Me by Glenraven
Summary: Atsushi sputtered, eyes widened and cheeks red. Ryuu could practically watch his brain malfunctioning at the nickname. Since he was still wearing his shirt, he summoned a few tendrils of Rashoumon and had them wrap loosely around Atsushi’s wrists.
“Can you keep them there for me, sweetie?” he smiled. “I need the use of both my hands to worship you.”
Atsushi simply nodded, tugging lightly at the restraints to test their give. He could have easily ripped through them, but Ryuu knew that he liked the resistance and needed the reminder. He tended to have trouble keeping his hands off of Ryuu, and though Ryuu preened at being so irresistible, sometimes he really did like his dessert to sit quietly.

Ryuu makes it very clear to Atsushi how much he treasures him.

A Mind as Clear as Day by BrainRotgoBrrrrr
Summary: Atsushi woke up to nothing.
Just, plain, white, nothing at all.
He blinked. He could hear things. People. Machines. Whirring and talking.
He remembered his name. That was all. It floated around in his mind, bouncing and echoing until he heard it clearly in his ears.

Summary: They're always a little sloppy, but it's one of Atsushi's favorite parts about them, that messiness. He loves the feeling of Akutagawa's nose squished up against his face, changing every few minutes because Akutagawa likes to tilt his head this way and that, testing which angle is best for sliding his tongue against Atsushi's lips. He loves the feeling of Akutagawa's lips slipping and catching on his chin, his cheeks, as they blindly move their mouths against each other, eyes closed and too happy to care about neatness.

“Are you okay, Ryuu?” Atsushi’s concerned voice finally broke the silence that had descended on the table.
“Oh I think Ryuu is much better than okay,” Dazai answered for him, glancing at Atsushi out of the corner of his eye before returning his attention to the man in front of him. “Could it be that our little Ryuunosuke likes it when we tell him just how good he is?”

hella got through chapter 6 everyone cheer!
i don't know how to respond to this coherently so i'm just going to scroll down and let the word vomit happen:
the choice of emoji reacts to some of these . . . i'm surprised hella hasn't killed you guys. keeping gin away from this mess is the last thing on my mind, unfortunately *stares at the BEAST tag*
ARRGHHHFGHHH IM SO GLAD YOU GUYS LIKE SSKK. they're such a breath of fresh air, and writing them comes so easily to me. while i like writing skk ( fucked up as they are--even at this point in the story ) and the fast-paced nature of their relationship, this is romance writing work coming from the guy whose only other fic had a first kiss at uhhh...160k words.
yesenina did serve too hard. i imagine her as similair to the others, but with a Rita Hayworth-like air of ambition about her, and that's a serve. and it's what gets her killed.
Chuuya Yuan history coming in SOON. actually. Next chapter. seeing hella lose it over Chuuya's internal monologue here has been absolutely hilarious and kind of rewarding. I Knew All That because I'm the author ( duh ) so i never really grasped how strange the shift to Chuuya's thoughts about the relationship would be. I mean there's snippets of it, like the diner scene, but you're right, it's fanfic and so that is a lot easier to sweep under the rug.
ACAB. I considered putting a line from Doc Riedenschneider in The Asphalt Jungle ( 1950 ) "Experience has taught me to never trust a policeman. Just when you think one's alright, he turns legit." in a divider chapter between part I and part II, but I thought was too on the nose following 7 ( and a bit pretentious considering this is just ao3 fanfic and not a published work or anything ) so i grabbed myself by the metaphorical monkey backpack and didn't. Mafia Nepo Baby 😭 I love Hella HUGE WIN FOR ME. I was so nervous because i needed to balance Chuuya being observant but also quite literally *out of the loop.* He's not from the same world as Dazai--he's not involved with the murders or the politics or the mess going on yet. He comes across as oblivious at times because Dazai's POV is purposefully designed to make you see him that way. Dazai's so sure he's in control of what Chuuya knows that he doesn't realize he might have met his match.
ZSKK are uhm. yeah. all im gonna say there.
the "PARDON." IM CACKLING
argh. the switch up with this chapter...why the hell am i getting nostalgic for something i wrote less than two months ago ( ican't believe i've been grinding through this fic so fast jesus ).
i love unhealthy dynamics, truly. this fic was really a test to see if i could write soukoku making each other worse. which is a pretty stark contrast to my other stuff.
HELLA. OH MY GOD. that bit about their careers . . . i can't believe she noticed that. Chuuya started the fic genuinely ambitious, wanting the spotlight, wanting to defy expectations set upon him by his looks, his race, and his past. Dazai's a cop, sworn to uphold the law, but he doesn't feel like a good person. He can't ( interlude chapter . . . stares out the window ), but he can use everything about who he is to give Chuuya the life he wants. like a guardian ange--*gets taken out by a sniper chapter 8 style* Their original goals aren't gone, per se, they've simply been reoriented.
can't wait for chapter 7
i know it'll make Hella want to hunt me down for sport, so i'll sleep with both eyes open for the forseeable future.

AOT Characters as Pilots in Top Gun
Erwin Smith, Levi Ackerman, Zeke Yeager, Reiner Braun, Jean Kirstein, Porco Galliard
Summary: Call signs, flight positions, partners, and flying styles of some of our favorite AOT men based on Top Gun.
Word Count: 0.5K
Warnings: Piloty jargon
A/N: Here is my first little dabble into some Top Gun content, and it's with some of my favs, so please enjoy :) also if you know what a barrow is it makes Porco's a LOT funnier😂-Birch<3
Erwin Smith
-Call Sign: "Game-Master", aka "Games"
-Position: Radar Intercept Officer (RIO), aka Weapon System Officer (WSO)
-Partner: Levi Ackerman
-Style: As a RIO, Erwin is very tactical and tends to stay very calm and collected when they hit rough air. He primarily leads missions, staying in charge of weapons and how they are employed. His aviation helmet is dark green and black, with "Game" written on the left and "Master" on the right in silver letters.
---
Levi Ackerman
-Call Sign: "Wings"
-Position: Naval Aviator
-Partner: Erwin Smith
-Style: This shouldn't be a shocker, but Levi is an amazing pilot. He doesn't always stick to the book and rules, which can get him in trouble with the captains. He doesn't mind doing risky and sharp turns and dives to get into tone range on the MiGs, which makes him a hazard when he's being dangerous. It keeps enemies on their toes, and he has Erwin's full trust as a pilot. Levi's aviation helmet is dark grey and black, with "Wings" directly above his forehead.
---
Zeke Yeager
-Call Sign: "Beastboy", aka "Beast"
-Position: Naval Aviator
-Partner: Porco Galliard
-Style: He flies like Iceman- to the book, and to the rules. He gets very upset with Levi when Levi dashes off of his wing to try to get the instructors during tests, leaving him unguarded. But he's still a strong pilot, and insanely good at getting into tone range. His helmet is brown, with "Beast" on the right side of his helmet, and "Boy" on the left side, back beside his temples.
---
Reiner Braun
-Call Sign: "Chainmail"
-Position: Naval Aviator
-Partner: Jean Kirstein
-Style: Reiner is an...interesting pilot. He can get shaken up by seeing too many MiGs, or gettting into the jet wash during training. But Jean keeps him in the game, and the two make a surprisingly good pair with Jean's natural leadership. Reiner's aviation helment is a deep red with small chainlinks spelling out "Chainmail" above his brow.
---
Jean Kirstein
-Call Sign: "Little John", aka "Horse-Face"
-Position: Radar Intercept Officer (RIO), aka Weapon System Officer (WSO)
-Partner: Reiner Braun
-Style: Jean is one of the best RIOs in Top Gun's flight school. He can stay calm, cool, and collected as he manages the weapons and the incoming bogeys on the screen. He had actually gotten into Top Gun as a pilot, but was told by one of the instructors he had the capability to be a great RIO. Jean's aviation helmet is navy blue, with "Little John" in gold letters running down each side of his head.
---
Porco Galliard
-Call Sign: "Barrow", aka "Pig-Sty"
-Position: Radar Intercept Officer (RIO), aka Weapon System Officer (WSO)
-Partner: Zeke Yeager
-Style: Porco is a RIO for one and one reason only- his brother Marcel had been his pilot before he was tragically killed in a training accident. He is extremely cautious when looking for bogeys and trying to pick MiGs out of the sky. He works well with Zeke and likes to stick to the rules to avoid more casualties. Porco's helmet is pink and mostly black, with "Barrow" across his brow.

love you through an open wound
But Gin leaves flowers on a grave, and they wear grief like a noose around their neck, and when they ask Louisa what brought her to Japan, Louisa lets herself be pulled into a conversation like a fly in a spider’s web. The silk is soft, and Louisa is tired, and— And Gin listens, like no one else would. It’s so easy to drown in them.

(abt ur tags on that fic rec list post) I'd love to know more gen bsd fics!!! if u don't mind pls make a list of them
OP, I hope you understand that you have unleashed a monster considering how many BSD fics I consumed. But that said, I'll try to keep it short and strictly gen for this ask, then just reblog with the rest (some do have implied ships, though). Most of them are just fluff and one-shots. And I haven't really read much fanfic recently, so most of these are my bookmarks from before I even really got into this blog and my memory on them might be shaky; generally, I either liked them because good writing, good characterization, good analysis, and/or it was just too funny/too interesting to not bookmark. Some might have Americanisms/Westernisms of things that probably don't really happen in Japan (probably?) and some might have slight character assassinations, but I don't think anything should be too gratuitously unforgivable. Also, all opinions are my own and do not reflect on either the writing or the author's original intent.
So under the cut are my absolute favourite of favourites.
Morning Light (18021 words) by FallenBrie (time loop, Atsushi character exploration, ADA!found family)
O expectations, stale and dismal airs, leave this body of mine! (20976 words) by aptlydapper (3 chapters, still my all-time favourite bsd fanfic for the writing and the concept and its execution, Chuuya joins the ADA basically but so much more than that to me)
Conundrum (23921 words) by AdmiralTDeVanto (hi, I love this AU so much, role-reversal where aku and atsu are the older figures and dazai and chuuya are the younger ones, some other au roleswaps happen but that's a surprise)
circle of praise (1898 words) by Oxalisalis (have a few by this author (love their works so much, they have some great BEAST things), basically compliment assault, ADA family, sweet and funny)
The Scent of Milk Tea (1343 words) by Sternstunde (Atsushi and Chuuya are housemates, neither is aware of the other's job, please let them meet in canon, 2 chapters and unfinished)
Reason To Live (1746 words) by Allwalkfree (time travel fic with a take on akutagawa's future character arc that left me DEAD, just...him being better than the people he was taught by okay? and him having a clearer picture of the stuff he went through etc)
hell is empty (all the devils are here) (1065 words) by Origamidragons (legit one of my FAVOURITE Gin character explorations, shoutout to the use of her character's irl short story)
in the end, you write your verse (6858 words) by Origamidragons (ADA and PM role swap and it's honestly SO GOOD that I desperately wish there was more of this (in a this fic is INCREDIBLE way, that is))
In The Choice, There's Peace (2561 words) by treetrunkdaddy (chill vibes, fic that explores Atsushi's character so nicely to me through how he copes with anger)
Mark of a Teacher (527 words) by Seito (Kunikida has been framed as a terrorist apparently and his students see the news headlines, it's hilarious and just fun)
A Study From Stripes (teach me to be loved again) (29684 words) by MidnighttWriter (beloved fic with beloved writing, Atsushi trauma exploration, might feel a little dark or emotional for bsd (in a different way, since BSD doesnt exactly shy away from being emotional or dark) but honestly beloved and SUCH a fascinating Atsushi character study to me)
would you believe me if i said i was blinded by the light? (1203 words) by elijay (half-blind Dazai real to me, but no its a really neat headcanon and that's all the fic is, which is all i wanted)
good bones (838 words) by Quintessence (I LOVE THIS SO MUCH, another Atsushi has a lot of trauma and the agency is flabbergasted)
5 Times Dazai Didn’t Understand Math And The 1 Time Kunikida Tried To Do Something About It (3746 words) by zededs (math is difficult, so is Dazai, Kunikida is stressed out, just a funny story)
how to get away with murder (10000 words) by magdalenes (11 chapters and unfinished, but it's SO SO good, the author is setting up the mystery so well, and it's basically just....detectives doing detective work but possibly also avoiding other detectives, more plotty than charactery)
what is a name (640 words) by Seito (guys, seriously, read this, im serious it has SUCH a good theory and the IMPLICATIONS of this to the larger bsd story????)
a secret for a secret (2302 words) by Oxalisalis (another of my FAVOURITE Gin fics, this author DELIVERED so well on their characterisation, slight canon divergence but perhaps not?)
But yeah. Because I somehow ended up opening over 130 tabs (that was after narrowing things down. i am so normal about BSD) for this ask, I'll just....reblog with more for those who are interested in gen fics. (It's why it took me a while, apologies.)
#despite what the reblogs of this will look like#i really do have to take a step back because busy life so im not sure how the queue will look (its already looking pretty low though)#but uh.....yeah#have fun seeing me being utterly unhinged about bsd guys#bsd fanfic#bsd#note's nonsense#me: i am absolutely normal about bsd#also me: makes a list of 130 bsd gen fics just cause i can

Your Vampyre cortex is so good. do you have monster designs for anyone else??
helloo, yes i do :)
usually n. brio is a werewolf or a terrifying beast because i definitely think he’s use a potion to make a sickass halloween costume, if asked nicely by someone like nina or n. gin. but very begrudgingly. he’s not one for halloween. though, anything that’ll manage to scare the crap out of cortex is alright with him.
nina i think would either dress as a ‘homicidal maniac’ (its really just herself but she claims they look just the same as a regular person) in wednesday addams style, or maybe some kind of slasher killer. she’s a goth! she loves her dark humour. :)
n. gin is difficult because he’d either do something similar like a slasher killer or something hideously silly. like, something akin to his cyborg idol outfit in crash tag team racing. or perhaps, a mix of both! a bloodied ballerina. he would also decorate the missile as part of the costume as best he can.
cortex was a vampire, but i also think he’d do a silly and be ‘mad scientist’ one year because he found out they count as halloween stereotypes. he just put some white through his hair, frizzed it up and wore some goggles. a third option is dr. frank n. furter. he likes the way his legs look!
n. tropy i don’t think would want to dress up, because he’s experienced one too many halloweens. though, if pressed… maybe some historical figure that nobody even knows about anymore. and when someone— or, everyone— says they have no idea who he is, he ditches it and goes as a vampire instead. he KNOWS he looks good.
crash i think would be a skeleton, but the type that when you’re in the dark the white paint glows. which is perfect for when him, coco and crunch go trick-or-treating. cortex favours this outfit the most.
coco has been known to do silly costumes like a bat or a bunny— but more recently she’s started doing cosplays from her favourite media. and she kills it every time! sometimes crash may find her wearing it again in the house, and she says it’s because she doesn’t want to put the craftsmanship to waste.
crunch would probably go for a fictional person as well, but something from a popular film and more his build. he sometimes just gets coco to come up with an idea, and maybe a little help with the outfit itself. i can picture them both sat giggling mischievously as they form cool cosplay ideas together.
aku aku can’t really dress up— but that’s alright, he doesn’t mind the bandicoots drawing something on for him. so long as it’s not the cat nose and whiskers like last time…
uka uka finds the concept of halloween hilarious. and has been frequently told he fits right in with it anyway. so he just shows up as his scary, sinister self.
edit: this is really funny because i just realised you said monster DESIGNS not DESIGN IDEAS. i rly took this prompt and RAN. thank you for the ask regardless :)

➼ whumptober 2023 ❧ Day 12: Sacrifice | Character Death ❧ Previous Day ❧ Next Day ❧ Masterlist
A small village resides at the bottom of a valley. A gushing, torrential river marks its western boundary, and an expansive forest on the north and south border keeps the villagers tucked safely inside. A winding dirt path in the northside wilderness is the only safe way for people to come in and out of the village.
There is no way through the village, at least not by a carved trail. On the south side, a short, stone-paved path will only bring travelers to a massive, well-kept shrine. The tall white walls glimmer only in the moonlight, making the painted wood appear striped and alive. At night, the villagers can hear the call of a tiger as it roams it stalks the wilderness, hunting down prey and watching the villagers as they sleep.
Byakko protects the Village of the White Tiger. Not once has it ever fallen to outside forces, and its people never jeopardized to the steel of a blade nor the crack of a whip. The natural boundaries of the village are a shield of sorts, designating where the harmful world ends and the sanctuary of the White Tiger begins.
Long ago, a band of wandering travelers wanted to finally settle down and start their families. They found the perfect area — a clearing with enough space to build houses and fires, expansive wilderness to hunt live game, a river for washing and fishing, and a mountain to shield them from the worst of the wind currents. It shouldn’t have been a surprise to them, then, that the area was already occupied.
On a bright full moon, these travelers struck a deal with the White Tiger. If he would share his land and offer his protection, they would feed him in turn. Once every ten years, when the moon is yellow and his constellation prowls the sky, a boy not a day over thirteen will be sacrificed. They will bind him by his hands and feet, and they will leave him in a gleaming white shrine.
He will taste like the Heaven and the Earth, and he will be enough to satiate the White Tiger’s hunger until the next decade.
Byakko agreed to these terms, and every decade since then the village has sacrificed a young boy without fail. The boy has never come back, never escaped his bonds, and the village, in turn, has never been harmed by outside forces.
Akutagawa Ryuunosuke is a twelve-year-old orphan boy born with an incurable cough and parents who died at his birth.
He is a boy born to die.
Murderer is attached to his name before he can let out his second scream as a newborn baby. He roams the dirt paths of the streets and steals where he won’t be caught, works where he is allowed, and sleeps where the dogs can’t sniff out his urchin stench. His sister drew the luckier end of the deal; being born mere minutes before him, she kept her babe hands clean of blood and death. Gin was adopted into a family unable to conceive a child of their own.
She doesn’t abandon him, though. When she can, she waits in his favorite hideout spot; a small cove on the side of the mountain. Made of stone, he can fit little bits of carefully packaged food that can be eaten on a day when his poor health doesn’t allow him to be out for long. It lets in enough air to be ventilated while also enclosed to trap a comfortable amount of heat. The only downside is its vulnerability to flooding, so he has to wait days after a storm for the water to recede before he can return to it once more.
Gin will sometimes bring food, other times entertainment that he can’t find elsewhere. She teaches him how to knit, mend his clothes, and read his own name. It’s the best part of his week, usually, to see her in his cove. She’s the only person who has ever greeted him with a genuine smile on her face, and a gentle hug to cure the scrapes and bruises of a cursed life.
But he knows they run on burrowed time. It’s his fate; he’s reminded every time he works an odd job, when he looks to the sky and sees the White Tiger prowl for his unfortunate prey when he side-steps the jaws of a snapping hound. He was born to be a sacrifice, and nothing will change that.
For some reason, when he steps into his cove in the middle of the day after a particularly bad coughing fit left him crippled and heaving, he’s still stupefied to be greeted with tears streaming down Gin’s face.
Her hug is as gentle as ever, and she whispers broken apologies in his ear like it’s somehow her fault. She warns him that they will seize him the next time he’s in the village, but that they still don’t know where he returns to sleep at night.
“You still have time,” she says, shaking against his weak body, “you could still run.”
His cove floods in a storm that afternoon, and the villagers find him hidden away and asleep under a shop’s overhang to escape the cold. Ryuunosuke wonders if Gin would be disappointed in the fight that follows — if it can even be called that. It more consists of desperate thrashing of punches and kicks until one man grabs his arms, and another his legs, and they pin him to the ground after just thirty seconds of resistance.
He’s stretched on the ground like yarn being woven to cloth, and a third man binds his legs and arms with two segments of horse-hair rope that rubs the skin of his ankles and wrists raw. He is taken away without fanfare or allowing him to say goodbye to his sister. The wind whips through the darkness of the night, making his hair stick to his mouth. The white tips turn red as he coughs onto them.
One man carries him on his shoulder down the stone-paved path, and the other two hold flickering torches to light the way. The moon provides nearly enough light by itself, but he supposes they don’t want to risk losing their sacrifice. They don’t know what will happen if Ryuunosuke doesn’t make it to the shrine in time. Even he is not keen to find out.
The shrine doors open easily under the push of the leading man, and they set Ryuunosuke at the base of the statue of the White Tiger. It’s made of marble, and the way the moon shines through the open window slots brings it to life more than the walls ever could. Ryuunosuke only ever took a peak once, when stars aligned to allow Byakko to hunt the sky, and he’ll never forget the way the shrine seemed to leap out at him. The ornaments dangling off the overhang made it look like the jaws of a roaring beast.
Now, he sits in front of the white marble statue, closer than he ever was before to the deity destined to devour him. His bound hands rest in his lap, and his back presses uncomfortably against the hard edges of the base of the tiger. The men have long left, and with them, they took the heat of the torches. There is nothing to protect him from the cold wind rustling the rags he wore for clothes and the straggling strands of hair that hang from his head.
It’s quiet. Much quieter than he expected it to be. He closes his eyes and wills his heartbeat to slow down. Perhaps he doesn’t want to see the jaws of the real beast close over his head.
“It’s been ten years already?”
Ryuunosuke’s eyes snap open. It doesn’t take him long to find the source of the voice, for a boy stands in front of him. In his deathly tight grip is a broom, and he looks as though he’s just seen a ghost. The only response Ryuunosuke can give him initially is a fit of coughs that he can’t muffle in his arm. It sprays blood all over his lap and the ground in front of the marble statue.
The boy makes an odd, startled noise. “You shouldn’t be here. You’re sick!”
“That’s exactly why I’m here,” Ryuunosuke replies, licking his lips of any blood he can stuff back into his body. It’s best he saves the most he can for the White Tiger to consume. “Who are you, and why are you here? You’re not the sacrifice.”
A clattering sound resonates in the near-empty shrine, and the boy rushes over to crouch in front of Ryuunosuke. Up close, he can see clearly what he thought he might have been imagining before: the glow emitting from his eyes. The upper halves are colored purple, but the one that truly shines through is the yellow lower half. His black pupils are narrow despite the darkness shrouding them, and Akutagawa wonders who this boy really is.
Despite the shrine’s persistent cleanliness, no villager actually attends the shrine. There have been many legends passed on to explain the phenomena, but no one truly stuck with Ryuunosuke. He’d blamed it in part on his lack of parentage. Now, he sees the truth with his own eyes; a truth that will stick with him until the White Tiger takes its meal.
The person who upkeeps the shrine is just a boy.
“My name is Atsushi. I clean up around here,” he says, and he reaches out to touch Akutagawa’s unkempt hair. His sharp fingernails tug at the knots. “What’s your name?”
“Ryuunosuke,” he introduces, albeit hesitantly. He’s gotten into the habit of introducing himself by his first name in order to avoid affiliation with his sister. He does it for her sake, not his. The fewer foreign travelers spread the word of the Akutagawa family name, the easier it would be for her if she were to ever want to marry outside of the village.
A single strip of hair indicates that Atsushi once had bangs, but for some reason cut them into the hideous part he has now. A black streak cuts the monotony of his white hair.
Ryuunosuke narrows his eyes, and a coiling snake constricts his gut. “The White Tiger is meant to eat me,” he says, pulling away from Atsushi’s fingernail-claws ever so slightly. It’s enough to get him to retract his hand, and the boy has the audacity to turn pink in bashfulness.
“I don’t know about that. Byakko is…” Atsushi sits down fully on the ground, drawing his legs up to his chest and resting his chin on top of his knees. His skin is pale in the moonlight, illuminated in a way not so dissimilar to the marble statue. He doesn’t finish his statement. Instead, he focuses his glowing yellow eyes up at the statue, regarding it with a thoughtful gaze.
Ryuunosuke asks, for the second time in the few minutes they’ve spoken to each other: “Who are you?”
Atsushi returns his gaze back to him, and his lips stretch into something that’s supposed to be a smile but doesn’t quite hit the mark. “I was the first boy ‘sacrificed’ to Byakko.”
It makes sense. Ryuunsouke recalls the first thing the boy said to him. It's been ten years already? Only someone who has seen a hundred boys be torn apart can really say something like that.
“Are you alive?”
“Maybe,” he says. “Maybe not. It depends on what you would call alive.”
Ryuunosuke doesn’t know what to make of that answer. From the outside, Atsushi looks as alive as any of the other villagers do. His breaths crystallize in the cold air, his hair moves with the wind flowing from the open windows, and the fingers that carded through Ryuunosuke’s hair feel real.
Yet Atsushi has been present for a hundred meals, making him a thousand years old. No human has ever been recorded as living that long. Only deities and powerful kitsunes — who may as well be deities themselves — can dream of having such a long life. Though, if every day is spent cleaning a shrine for a tiger that ate them is that life, Ryuunosuke can’t imagine it as much of a dream rather than a nightmare.
“Is it hard,” Ryuunosuke starts after an awkward silence, “to watch boys die every ten years?”
Atsushi seems to struggle with that answer. His gaze flits left and right, he bites his lip, and he pulls his legs to be under him rather than in front. He sits on top of his calves now, and he scratches at his arms with his long fingernail-claws.
When he finally meets Ryuunosuke’s gaze again, he sighs. “I don’t know how to answer that. Nobody has ever asked me before and I…I’ve never seen one die.”
“What do you mean?”
Before he can try to hold stifle it, his next coughing fight wracks his body. It’s the worst he’s had all week, and it leaves him breathless even from where he’s sitting. Clotted blood dots on the floor, and they land all over Atsushi’s skin since he moved in to support Ryuunosuke’s collapsing body. However, they don’t quite stain his white shirt or black pants.
Once Ryuunosuke recovers, albeit slowly, from the attack, Atsushi answers his question. “I’ve talked to the boys before, but they’ve all been too scared to hold a conversation with me. And then I’ll close my eyes for only a second, and they’ll be gone.”
“Then don’t close your eyes,” Ryuunosuke responds without thinking. His entire village is on the line. What will happen if Atsushi doesn’t allow the White Tiger to eat him?
Atsushi stares at him owlishly, and Ryuunosuke realizes the boy hasn’t once blinked. Has that been what he’s trying to do all this time? Is that millisecond of time enough for the White Tiger to silently take away the boy Atsushi talks to?
Ryuunosuke doesn’t know what to make of the situation. He doesn’t know what to make of Atsushi, who blurs the line between the living and the dead, the human and the deity. All he knows for certain is what he did before a boy is sent to the shrine every ten years to be eaten by the White Tiger that protects the wilderness.
But so far, all Ryuunosuke has been met with is a boy who has lived for longer than he should’ve. He wonders just how true that ancient legend of the founding of the Village of the White Tiger is. Nobody currently living in the village had been alive back then, and no boy had ever returned to the village to tell the story of Atsushi and the cared-for shrine.
Then the wind whistles a dreadful tune, and a white tiger phases through the closed doors of the shrine.
Byakko is huge. His head nearly knocks against the high ceiling, and just one paw takes up the same amount of space as Atsushi does while sitting. The enormous size of the shrine clicks to Ryuunosuke in a way that it hasn’t before. A deity this big needed a large place to rest and eat its human meals.
And a deity he is. His white fur is lined with a glow that can only be described as otherworldly, like the night sky itself has attached itself to outline his body. His black stripes stick out against the pure white, and it reminds Ryuunosuke of the single strand of black hair in Atsushi’s bang. Byakko inclines his head down, and he does not look at Ryuunosuke.
His piercing yellow gaze is on the boy now standing in front of him, his back turned and his arms out to hold the cheeks of the White Tiger.
Suddenly, the world narrows around Akutagawa, and he gets it. Atsushi, Byakko, and the shrine. They are all different, but they are all one and the same. They operate together to protect the villagers, even if it means sacrificing a boy every ten years.
Even if it's the same boy that has been sacrificed for a thousand years, a hundred times over. Even if it’s just to protect one life.
Somewhere in between Byakko’s arrival and the gaping jaws leaning in to devour the white-haired boy, Atsushi had cut the rope in two. It has to have been his fingernails that weren’t really nails at all, but claws he’d gained after a thousand years of being devoured. His eyes weren’t narrow from being acclimated to cleaning the shrine in the dark, and they didn’t glow from simply being the most colorful being in the room.
Ryuunosuke escapes through an open window, and he feels the hands of a hundred boys before him climbing out of the same sill. They don’t return to the village. They run around the sacred forest and find their way to the dirt path, and they leave using the only safe path available. They don’t look back, and they don’t ever return.
And Ryuunosuke gets it. He preserves Atsushi’s sacrifice just as the boys from a thousand years before him. He feels their hearts pounding just as his beats, and their feet walk on the same roots he trips over now.
Byakko protects the people in the village, following the promise he made with the travelers long ago. He protects the old and the young, the weak and the strong, and the boys outcast from the village — the ones born to die. Ryuunosuke understands that now. He and the boys before him understand it better than anyone in the village ever will.

the bull and the beast
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/hiOxLmd by octorose “What game are you playing?” All of Atsushi’s movements are made with the languid grace of a massive predator knowing it’s top dog in the jungle, and has very little to fear. Akutagawa tracks the motions in a corner of his mind, already burning with the desire to run. The predator hasn’t attacked, yet. It’s weak. He has the advantage. Calm, that, Akutagawa tells that part of himself, we’ll get our chance. To Atsushi, he says, “can friends not meet at a restaurant to talk?” “This is a McDonalds.” Atsushi’s voice is flat. “And we aren’t friends.” “Indeed.” Akutagawa eats another chicken nugget. It gives him something to do. He is not sure what to do, now that he is here. He thought—what? What did he think would happen? (After Dazai's funeral, Akutagawa finds himself at a McDonalds, contemplating his life without the man in black in it. Little does he know that Atsushi would do the same, igniting a fight between them. The outcome of said fight may surprise them both, and give them the purpose they hope for).
