When I first read about this exhibition at Somerset House in last week’s TimeOut London I was really excited! I have had a beard for two years and for me there is no turning back!

This exhibition presents a series of portraits by photographer Mr Elbank in which all of the subjects wear a beard.  It features over 80 images and the audience gets to explore the fine art of grooming and get to see how every man and woman’s beard is different! The show celebrates the enduring beard trend which has exploded across the world and shows no sign of going away.

The pogonophiles come from all corners of the globe and from all walks of life; it includes the famous facial hairs of actor John Hurt, models Ricki Hall and Billy Huxley, and artist Gavin Turk, but also other interesting characters such as tattooist Miles Better and British bearded woman Harnaam Kaur, who has been growing a beard since the age of 16 after being diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition which causes excess hair growth.

Many of the photos are recognisable from social media sites like Pintrest, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram. One of Mr Elbanks early portraits of Australian charity campaigner Jimmy Niggles went viral and he became a social media sensation.

How did this all come about?

While living and working in Sydney, Mr Elbank shot a mens’ concept editorial for Kiwi magazine Black on Beards – one of the first to recognise their rise in popularity.  This resulted in a fascination with facial hair for Mr Elbank and he started seeking subjects for a personal photography project on beards.

Through a friend, he met Jimmy Niggles who told him about his charity initiative following the death of his close friend from skin cancer.  Jimmy’s idea was to grow a beard as a conversation starter to spread the word about the preventable disease and share his friend’s story.  To support Niggles’ cause, Mr Elbank started up #Project60 whereby he would photograph 60 people with beards to raise awareness of Niggles’ Beard Season and reach an international audience by seeding them on social networking sites.  He received over 1,200 applications from people wanting to participate and those selected all travelled to Mr Elbank’s rural Warwickshire home to sit for their portrait at their own expense.  The #Project60 images have been widely shared on social media and have encouraged viewers to go for skin checks which can prove life-saving.

The exhibition encompasses Mr Elbank’s original collection of works, #Project60, plus new and unseen photographs shot specially for the Somerset House show, bringing them all together for the first time.

Spent the day in London so decided to go and see some recent photographer work at Somerset House.

Beard

Beard exhibition is located  in the Terrace Rooms at Somerset House.  Beard the title is literally about beards , Or as it is called a pogonophile photography exhibition. Pogonophile is a word to describe the term , one who is attracted or loves beards. This exhibition was interesting to go and see as it showed very famous guy models who are know for their beards and rough and edgy look.  It explore the trend of bearded men and woman.

This exhibition all has a deeper meaning behind it all , that this project which is known as “#project60″ was to raise awareness of skin cancer. This awareness started by a close friend of Mr Elbank’s ,  [1]“who he met Jimmy Niggles who told him about his charity initiative following the death of his close friend from skin cancer.  Jimmy’s idea was to grow a beard as a conversation starter to spread the word about the preventable disease and share his friend’s story”.

The work itself was interesting to see as you would first see well known bearded models. Then you would go into the next room and see a massive wall with a collection of different beards. My guessing its photographs of the applicators who took park in project60.  

It makes me question , that did he's work only become famous because of who he took photographs of , or was it that because of the highly loved trend for beards.
