So there's this organization called Bead for Life, and they help empower women in Uganda through jewelry making! BFL trains women how to make the jewelry and bring themselves out of poverty. Its a sustainable industry being that the beads are made out of recycled paper. You can read more about it on their website, but by going through this link and buying jewelry, it helps support my BuildOn chapter that will be going to Nicaragua in February to help build a school as well as empowering Ugandan women.
Thanks

Sitting there, in a land so desperately unknown to my mind's eye. I imagine your smile and laughter as you sit together, a community of women. Rolling strips of magazines. Stringing beads onto jewelry wire and jewelry elastic. I hope your heart trusts the value of this work, I hope you will see the fruits of your labor, that your children, grandchildren and village children will be well cared for while I model for my friends this new fashion, these gorgeous beads, this cause. I imagine you could teach me lessons in humility, acceptance, grace and joy. I imagine you embrace this opportunity but know that your happiness does not rely on the charity of others. I imagine you are intelligent beyond many a doctorate student, understanding the depth and complexities of this life and this world and what the human soul is capable of in terms of love, compassion and survival. I hope you know that I think the world of you, although I've not seen your face nor have any hope of doing so. I hope you know that I admire your handiwork, your resilience and your commitment to serve, in love, your family and community.

BeadForLife is a non-profit organization started by three women who wanted to help Ugandan women learn skills that will earn them a living wage.
Here's a bit more about the organization, and their products:
BeadforLife began by teaching women to make beautiful beaded jewelry out of recycled paper.  They launched a second income-generating project in northern Uganda in 2010, creating a livelihood for the extremely poor women who farm and gather Shea nuts. BeadforLife makes the Shea nuts into Shea butter products, including creams, soaps and lip balms.  The sales of these products have the potential to empower tens of thousands of women.  Currently, BeadforLife is working with 740 women, most of whom are farmers, to educate them about how to improve the quality of their farms and bring their agricultural goods to market.
How cool would it be to grab a couple soaps and some of their Shea Butter Peppermint Lip Balm and give it to someone as a host/ess gift or thank you present? Including a little card about the women who made their African Lemongrass & Lavender soap would make this a super thoughtful, and super ethical gift idea!
Check out the beads and other product on the BeadForLife website!
