𝐤𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 — late-teens to early-twenties, pogue. raised by a single mother with a new boyfriend every week. nothing was the same from one day to the next and there was zero stability. instead of playing with dolls, katie preferred collecting action figures, reading comic books, and playing outside with the boys. anything to be out of the house and away from the chaos. her interest in cars came from hanging around boys constantly and she learned how to work on engines in cars, boats, motorcycles, you name it. she found solace in being good at something. naturally katie got a job at a mechanic shop in the cut at sixteen, but it didn't come without problems and scrutiny. as a petite blonde that resembled a barbie, her male co-workers and customers found it hard to take her seriously... until she proved them wrong, outdoing the other employees. katie tries to keep to herself and stay out of trouble, but that rarely happens. trouble seems to follow her. fc ; josephine langford 𝐬𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: bisexual (male leaning) 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲: goldie (mother), father unknown. 𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: mechanic. 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲𝐬: sports, surfing, video games, live music, dive bars, hiking, boating, watching football. 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐬: independent, confident, friendly, adventurous, feisty, resourceful, a tomboy. 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐬: being talked down to, disrespect, unwanted flirting. 𝐳𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐜 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧: aquarius

"It is easy to imagine what might have developed if the filmmaker (Jean-Mari Teno) and his camera had not been present. Teno comments 'The paradox of this country is that the national sport - far more popular than soccer - is the plundering of resources by our heads and chiefs, yet a youth was nearly lynched for stealing one hen and four chicks'. LA JOLLA – On a busy Sunday for the California men's tennis team, Carl Emil Overbeck clinched a 5-0, nighttime victory over UC San Diego and teamed with Mikey Wright to clinch the doubles point against the Tritons at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Jonathan Irwanto and Timofey Stepanov won their consolation semifinal Sunday morning in the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, but the consolation final was rained out. Stepanov and Irwanto, one of several pairs seeded 17th in the annual doubles tournament, defeated Caleb and Christian Settles, 4-6, 7-6(2), 10-7, in the Pacific Coast consolation semis. The Golden Bears were set to face Stanford's Filip Kolasinski and Hudson Rivera in the noon PT consolation final, until Mother Nature intervened. The Tritons were scheduled to host Cal at 3 p.m. PT at the Northview Tennis Courts in La Jolla, but rain scuttled the match at UCSD. The teams instead moved to the drier courts at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club for a 5:45 p.m. PT start. At court-three doubles, Cal's Alex Chang and John Kim beat Philip Lan and Carson Lee, 6-2, but then Ryder Jackson and Qian Sun – in the latter's first collegiate doubles match – lost on court one, 7-5, to UCSD's Zach Pellouchoud and Pelayo Rodriguez. Wright and Overbeck bested William Lan and Daniel Traxler, 7-6(4), on court two to secure the point for Cal. The Bears were dominant in singles, dropping just one set, with that coming in Sun's first collegiate singles match, though that contest was abandoned when Cal completed its victory. The Bears collected singles wins from Kim, Stepanov, Overbeck – who topped Carson Lee, 7-6(8), 6-1, to clinch – and Irwanto to post the 5-0 result. Cal plays again next Sunday, when it visits SMU for a nonconference battle in Dallas. Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship – Cal Results March 3, 2024, in La Jolla, Calif. The era of the epic album:
As rock, folk, and country music grew in popularity so did the ambitions of its best practitioners to make impressive albums. In the mid-60s, after the artistic and commercial success of Bob Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home, musicians began to respond to and compete with each other to make epic music. With Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys’ symphonic Pet Sounds, “pop” had entered the era of the album. By the late 60s, rock musicians who wanted to be thought of as bold, innovative, and artistic were concentrating on long-playing records, at a time when the singles market was hitting a plateau.
Just after the watershed year of 1967 – when stunning albums by The Beatles (Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band) and Jefferson Airplane (Surrealistic Pillow) were released – more and more bands jumped on the album bandwagon, realizing that the format gave them the space and time to create different and challenging sounds. The days of record labels wanting a constant production line of three-minute singles were disappearing. By 1968, singles were being outsold by albums for the first time, helped by the increase in production quality of high-fidelity stereo sound and the idea of the album as an artistic whole. The time spent making long-players changed from hours to weeks, or even months.
This also came at a time when journalism began to give rock music more considered attention. In February 1966, a student called Paul Williams launched the magazine Crawdaddy!, devoted to rock’n’roll music criticism. The masthead boasted that it was “the first magazine to take rock and roll seriously.” The following year, Rolling Stone was launched.
The birth of FM radio:
Another important turning point in the rise of the album had been a mid-60s edict from the Federal Communications Commission, which ruled that jointly owned AM and FM stations had to present different programming. Suddenly, the FM band opened up to rock records, aimed at listeners who were likely to be more mature than AM listeners. Some stations – including WOR-FM in New York – began allowing DJs to play long excerpts of albums. Stations across America were soon doing the same, and within a decade FM had overtaken AM in listenership in the US. It was also during this period that AOR (album-oriented radio) grew in popularity, with playlists built on rock albums.
This suited the rise of the concept album by serious progressive-rock musicians. Prog rock fans were mainly male and many felt that they were effectively aficionados of a new type of epic music, made by pioneers and artisans. The prog musicians believed they were trailblazers – in a time when rock music was evolving and improving. Carl Palmer, the drummer for Emerson, Lake & Palmer, said they were making “music that had more quality,” while Jon Anderson of Yes thought that the changing times marked the progression of rock into a “higher art form.” Perhaps this was the ultimate manifestation of “pop” becoming “rock.”
The avant-garde explosion:
Lyrics in many 70s albums were more ambitious than the pop songs of the 50s and 60s. Similes, metaphors, and allegory began to spring up, with Emerson, Lake & Palmer emboldened to use the allegory of a “weaponized armadillo” in one track. Rock bands, sparked perhaps by Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, seemed to be matching the avant-garde explosion in the bebop era: there was a belief in making albums more unified in theme but more disparate in sound.
In a June 2017 issue of The New Yorker, Kelefa Sanneh summed up the persistent popularity of this new genre by saying, “The prog-rock pioneers embraced extravagance: odd instruments and fantastical lyrics, complex compositions and abstruse concept albums, flashy solos and flashier live shows. Concert-goers could savor a new electronic keyboard called a Mellotron, a singer dressed as a bat-like alien commander, an allusion to a John Keats poem, and a philosophical allegory about humankind’s demise – all in a single song (“Watcher Of The Skies”) by Genesis.”
Genesis were one of the bands leading the way in terms of epic music...

In this latest podcast, we sample a clip from our previous Beach Boys Book Club episode, as our leading contributor Gary Wells @vintage-leisure relates how he and a friend managed to find themselves backstage at an early 1990s Beach Boys concert in Canada, chatting to Mike, Al and Carl. It’s a little comical, poignant, and slightly eccentric at various moments, but it’s a great story with some treasured memories.
We also recommend a conversation between Gary and singer and actress, Donna Loren, to be found at her Love's a Secret Weapon Podcast, and in our brief post-credits segment, recall one of the quirkier moments in the 1972 concert documentary, Elvis on Tour, involving Elvis, the Mayor of Roanoke, a paper bag full of cash and floral guitar.
Special thanks to Gary for sharing his Beach Boys adventure with us. Find us on Soundcloud, Spotify, Apple, Amazon Music and more.

A Pre-History of Fanfiction V: Fandom Drama, More Zines, and Conclusion
Part I
Part II
Part III
Part IV
Sources
Chapter 5: Other Zines
Zines existed out of the K/S bubble, of course. Our old friend Sherlock Holmes laid claim to many staple pages often crossing over with the Doctor, Lovecraft’s monsters, and Count Dracula like in the pages of the SH-SF Fanthology edited by Ruth Berman. Zines like the Holmesian Federation edited by Signe Landon and written by Dana Martin Batory, Ruth Berman, John C. Bunnel, and Tina Rhea explored Holmes’ world in both fiction and non-fiction. When Lord of the Rings was republished in paperback in the 60s, zines like Bernie Zuber’s Mytholore explored Tolkein and other fantasy works.
Duh duh duh DUN DA DUN DUN DA DUN. The premier of Star Wars in 1977 inspired many zines. B. Clark published the first Star Wars fanzine, Skywalker in 1978. Others included Empire Stars by JJ Adamson and the Mos Eisley Chronicle by Doborah Rubin. The first sexual SW content appeared in the pages of Guardian #3 edited by Linda Deneroff and Cynthia Levine. Han/Luke slash filled the pages of zine to the point where the director of the Official Star Wars Fan Club sent Guardian and other publications a letter that demanded that they stop publishing porn along with a series of guidelines for zines.
Another fandom that comes up quite a lot in zine culture is Blake’s 7, a British SF tv show that shared many producers, writers, editors, and actors with Doctor Who (I guess that’s true of most British shows). The fandom was huge, especially for one that is not super active today. The creator, writers, and actors were uniquely involved in the fandom. The creator, Terry Nation, told zine editor Carl Hiles that he didn’t want Blakes 7 fanworks to appear in any zine that weren’t solely dedicated to Blakes. It wasn’t all negative, Nation also supplied a very kind introduction to a fanfiction titled Reflections in a Shattered Glass by Joe Nazzaro. Actor Gareth Thomas read a fan poem by Mary G T Weber out loud at a con, embracing her after.
Blake’s 7 was not without its troubles though. The fandom split in the late 80s when a fan revealed to Blake actor Paul Darrow the names of three fans slash producing fans, a writer, editor, and artist, who were operating under pseudonyms. Darrow sent a letter to these fans demanding them to stop publishing anything involving ‘his character or his likeness’. This caused a rift in the fandom between those who supported Darrow and those supporting the three targeted fans. (Fanlore - The Blake’s 7 War) It is speculated that Darrow was using slash as a scapegoat to obfuscate criticism he was receiving for participating in for-profit cons. This is a common theme in fandom, the disconnect between fans and those that make the show. For example, Jensen Ackles of Supernatural fame has made it clear that he does not like to answer questions about shipping his character with Castiel.
Slash became such a huge part of fandom that zine dedicated entirely to slash without a home fandom appeared in the 80s. One such zine was Dyad edited by Divya Blacque. Dyad used a far reaching amount of derivative works including Man from Uncle, Simon and Simon, Quantum Leap, Startsky and Hutch, Lethal Weapon 2, and China Beach. Slash developed its own genre conventions and language. In this case, not only is the author decentralized but the derivative work is as well. This marks another evolution of fandom from where organizing around a particular work or works is most important to where engaging in fannish behaviors is central.
Conclusions and Findings
For a time in the 80s and 90s, zines coexisted with online fan forums like alt.tv.x files.creative and The Aquiter Files for Blake’s 7. However, the ease, accessibility, and ubiquity of the internet won out and have pushed zines to the fringes of fandom. That is not to say that zines do not exist but they are most certainly not the main medium of fanfiction today.
So much has changed since the days of Gulliver and Pamela.
Fanfiction now exists on online archives like AO3 and fandom discourse lurks on Tumblr, available to a wider amount of people than a zine would ever be able to service. Fanfiction has increased in popularity and visibility in the past two decades. Fic has even transformed into multi-media franchises like EL James’ 50 Shades of Gray and Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments. The increasing acceptance of LQBTQ+ people has made the secrecy around slash all but obsolete.
Though there are endless problems within fandom and fandom behavior, I want to encourage you all to keep engaging with communities you love whether that be centered around a fictional work, a hobby, or anything else that piques your fancy. Keep putting your art and your words out there, you don’t need a middleman or a gatekeeper or a publisher to give you permission. Your little tumblr blog might set a precedence if you let it.
This is not an overarching explanation of fandom and is limited to a few works, places, and time periods. If you want to know more, I’ll link my sources in other post
I would like to give a very special thank you to Fanlore, a spectacular and far-reaching wiki with thousands of pages of amazing rabbit holes. I would also like to thank those fans that wrote their own histories like Mickela Ecks and Writer’s University, Jenna Sinclair, Alec Nevala-Lee, and Gloria Comandini. Though I used academic journals, these personal histories were the most elucidating.

Aripeka, Florida is a mix of history and natural charm on Florida’s Nature Coast. The 120-acre town is surrounded by Gulf water, marshes, a sandhill preserve and two natural fresh water springs. Aripeka is on the Gulf of Mexico, about two miles west of U.S. 19 in either Hernando County (via Osowaw Boulevard) or Pasco County (via Aripeka Road), AKA County Road 595. Let me explain the town’s split personality: it’s partly in Pasco County and partly in Hernando County with the South Hammock Creek Bridge serving as the dividing line. The creek is an inlet for the Gulf, and the bridge accommodates two vehicle lanes and areas for fishing. According to Eric, a young fisherman I met on the bridge, it’s possible to catch snapper, redfish, and snook at that location. What I saw in the shallow, murky water was different: pinfish, needlefish, and mullet. Eric is from New Jersey and I am from Minnesota so we shared a laugh at how different the fish are here in Florida. When I said, “Pinfish are mostly for bait, right?” trying to act knowledgeable, it caused another smile. Eric said, “No, you can eat them.” He also said that in the winter months, the water is crystal clear. Eric and a pinfish on the South Hammock Creek bridge. Image courtesy of Deanna Dammer Kimbrough. Norfleet’s Fish Camp and Carl’s Store are adjacent to the South Hammock Creek Bridge. The Camp is private property, but I could see several folks dressed in swimming suits having fun on the dock. Enjoying Aripeka Florida Other excellent ways to enjoy Aripeka include kayaking, canoeing, and SCUBA diving. Aripeka has its own library, a community farmer’s market, and even a Community Club that was constructed in 1960 on donated land. Aripeka has its own library, farmers market, and community clubhouse that was built on donated land in 1960. Image by Diane Bedard. One of the favorite places for visitors is the Post Office, located conveniently on Aripeka Road. It has gone through many different names and locations (see related section in this article), but it is an official, functioning postal service. As always, you want to be sure to check with businesses and clubs for their hours of operation before going there. Be sure to stop in at Norfleet’s store. The Norfleet family have been a part of Aripeka for many generations and the store has been a part of the community for over 50 years. Image by Diane Bedard. The 2010 Census reported 308 people in Aripeka, and I saw a mix of really old, not too old, sort of new, and really new homes. Some of the homes were more like estates. There is a real mix of homes in Aripeka – some old, some new, some large, some not. This is the view looking west from the Hammock Creek Bridge. I wouldn’t go so far as to call Aripeka a gated community, but there are a lot of fences and gates to keep privacy for the residents. Though there doesn’t seem to be much room for expansion, I did see several real estate signs advertising homes and empty lots for sale. I guess nothing stays the same. How Did Aripeka Get Here? According to Florida’s Adventure Coast website, the accepted history of Aripeka is that it was named after Sam Jones, a famous Mikasuki chief, who was called Aripeka or Aripeika. “The name is possibly corrupted from Muskogee “abihka” (pile at the base or heap at the root), which was a contest for supremacy among warriors who piled up scalps, covering the base of the war-pole.” Sometimes names are more intriguing when they are left to the imagination. The caption on this 1967 postcard says, “This island park on hiway 595, two miles west of hiway 19, between New Port Richey and Weeki Wachee Springs, provides free picnic sheds, beach, boat ramp and fishing. Overnight camping at nominal charge; ice, groceries, gas, Notary . . . Night Arrivals: If store closed, drive in and camp. Y'all Come!” Image courtesy of Fivay.org An aerial view of the unincorporated town of Aripeka helps us see why it was originally designated Gulf Key. In 1859, the property was “deeded to” Major John Parsons (an original founder of Bay Port) and Nannie Yulee (whose father, Senator David Yulee, owned a sugar mill and plantation in Homosassa). Gulf Key was officially settled in 1873 (per the Florida State Gazetteer). By 1885, Gulf Key had a reported population of just over 30 people. It had become a shipping port, which by the early 20th Century was big competition for railroad transportation. Carrie Littell Stevens poses with an alligator captured outside her home on Hammock Creek, about 1900. Carrie and her husband Dan were members of early pioneer families who settled at Aripeka. From 1898 to 1902 the post office was known as Wheeler. This is a picture of the photograph hanging at the tax collector’s office, provided to Mike Olson by the Norfleet family. The number of residents on Gulf Key increased by at least three in 1886 with the arrival of George W.C. Littell, his wife Amanda, and their sickly son Weaver. Their reason for moving to Florida is said to have been to improve Weaver’s health. George Littell would become a teacher in 1893 at what was then the Argo School, and in 1898 he built the Littell Fish Camp. Mr. Corwin Pearl (C.P.) Littell and his wife, Hilma Sue, 1960, in front of their house. They arrived at Aripeka in 1886, then known as Gulf Key. George Littell became a teacher and they built Littell Fish Camp. Image by Francis Johnson courtesy of Florida State Archives. Electricity and Telecommunications Can you imagine when the only option for getting your mail was to go to the Post Office? Can you imagine not being able to flip a switch to turn on a light or pick up a telephone to call family or friends? If you lived in Aripeka before 1883, you wouldn’t even have had a post office. It wasn’t until 1947 that the Rural Electrification Administration project brought electricity to Aripeka, and 1950 when phone lines were strung up in the small gulf coast town. I found no evidence of how many people actually had electricity or phones installed right away or how much it cost. Telephone service was brought to Aripeka in 1950. Party lines were common in rural telephone markets through the 1970s. I personally remember the days of “party lines”, where you had to share phone service and hoped no one listened in on your conversation. I’m betting that was the case in Aripeka way back then. The Post Office is Established in 1883 The first post office in Aripeka was originally named the Gulf Key Post Office, established in October 1883. Three years later, it was renamed Argo, only to become Gulf Key again five years after that. Then, in 1895 the Aripeka Post Office was established, with George Pine as postmaster, who was originally from New Jersey. In 1896 the Gulf Key Post Office was “discontinued” and two years later the Wheeler Post Office came into being but was discontinued in 1902. Hernando County intersection in Aripeka. Image by Deanna Dammer Kimbrough. If all of that seems confusing, Fivay.org shows that “The first post office was on the Hernando County side, and in the early days the northern part of the town was called Aripeka and southern part of the town was called Hammock Creek.” Pasco County intersection in Aripeka. Yes. It is the same road. Image by Deanna Dammer Kimbrough. In 1887, Pasco County was born, having separated from Hernando County, and taking Aripeka with it! All of this must have been unsettling for the residents. We don’t know how many towns or areas in the United States have gone through name changes over the decades... But that’s another story. Aripeka has the Prospect of Becoming a Thriving Town That is a quote from former Postmaster George Pine. He also noted that a store and church were built in the small bayside town, and several families from Arkansas built homes. By the early 1900s, things were beginning to thrive. In 1908, the First Baptist Church was organized. Aripeka's First Baptist Church was organized in 1908. It is still used today. Image by Deanna Dammer Kimbrough. The Aripeka Company was a corporation developed by Richard Abbey Ellis. The company’s main goal was to sell small tracts to be used solely for building homes. Another quote from Ellis which appeared in a 1908 edition of the Tampa Morning Tribute states an additional goal: “...to keep out speculators, thus securing industrious, law-abiding home-makers for citizens, and keeping out, or, when necessary, driving out, the lawless, undesirable element that so often gets control of and ruins settlements that would otherwise be most desirable.” Wow! A view of Aripeka's inland marshes. Image courtesy of Deanna Dammer Kimbrough. That was way before the Fair Housing Act of 1968. In fairness to Mr. Ellis, his company did provide financial help for emigrants who could repay the loan “out of the land itself.” Eventually, as it turns out, Ellis did not have enough money to gain title of the town. He had to sell. Aripeka Keeps Thriving E.G. Willingham was a prosperous lumber merchant from Atlanta, Georgia. In September 1910, the Atlanta Constitution reports that Willingham bought the entire town of Aripeka, with the exception of the church and schoolhouse. The purchase price was $15,000. A historic photo of the Osowaw Inn in Aripeka. The hotel burned in the 1960s. Image courtesy of Florida State Archives. At that point in time, there were many homes, a couple of hotels, some stores, the post office of course, and even “parks, a church, schoolhouse, and everything pertaining to a first-class community.” Willingham planned to develop the town even more and make it into “an important municipality.” As early as 1917, he was the owner of the Hotel Osowaw, which he sold to Mrs. Josephine Lynch in 1921, who in turn sold it to N.P. Lynch in 1924. Moonshine and a still in the attic. Image courtesy of Florida State Archives. Ironically, the hotel, then called the Os-o-Wa Inn, was raided by Prohibition Government agents in the pre-dawn hours of October 1931. The Os-O-Waw burned in the 1960s. According to local lore, Babe Ruth lost his World Series ring in a privy at the Inn. Who put the Famous in Aripeka? Most folks who have lived in Pasco, Hernando, or Citrus counties have heard about Babe Ruth having stayed in the Osowaw Inn and a couple of cabins in Aripeka. It’s true. Apparently, The Babe loved to hunt and fish while in the area. Other local lore says some of The Babe’s Yankee teammates were with him on occasion and even Jack Dempsey. The cabin that "The Babe" stayed in while fishing Aripeka's fine waters. Image courtesy of Florida State Archives. At one time Aripeka had its own artist colony. In 1976, James Rosenquist moved to Aripeka. The well-known Modern/Pop art painter lived there until April 2009 when a raging brush fire destroyed his home, office studio and all of his artwork. A residence located off of Osowaw Blvd. in the Hernando County side of Aripeka. According to Carl Norfleet, this is the former Aripeka school, in operation in the first half of the 20th century. According to another resident, it was James Rosenquist's home at one point. Image courtesy of Jeff Miller. Aripeka’s artist colony also attracted landscape artist Leslie Neumann, who moved there from New York in 1989. She still lives and paints in what she calls “paradise”. Remember Anita Bryant? She was pretty famous as a singer in the 50s and 60s, perhaps most notably for the song, Paper Roses, that she recorded long before a very young Marie Osmond hit the charts with it. A 1970 Florida Orange Growers ad featuring Anita Bryant as the organization's spokesperson. Image courtesy of Florida Orange Growers. The former Miss Oklahoma, orange juice spokeswoman, brand ambassador for the Florida Citrus Commission, and anti-gay rights activist ended “a decade-long hiatus from show business” by touring in a motor home while she lived in Florida. In 1988 Bryant performed at the Elks Lodge of Aripeka. The 80-year-old now lives in her home state of Oklahoma. Storms, Tornadoes and Earthquakes Yes, there has been some earthquake activity recorded at Aripeka. The City-Data.com website shows the most recent activity in the Aripeka area occurring on September 10, 2006, registered a magnitude of 5.9 which was classified as “moderate” and occurring “286.6 miles away from the city center.” That same website reports that tornado activity in the Aripeka area is “slightly above Florida state average.” In 1966 and 1983 tornadoes reached enough wind speed to cause death and damage. This house was literally raised from its foundation, moved and set down along Osowaw Blvd. by the "No Name Storm" of 1993. Image by Jeff Cannon. Probably the most unforgettable storm to hit the Nature Coast was on March 13, 1993. The No Name Storm hit the coast at around midnight without warning. Aripeka was one of the “hardest hit areas,” which included Hernando Beach, Bayport, Pine Island, and Weeki Wachee Gardens. There was one death reported in Aripeka, but the damage to all of those areas was tremendous. As a Times staff reporter wrote on the 25th anniversary, “The storm had no name. But few will forget its angry face.” It was also dubbed “The Storm of the Century,” Hopefully the 21st Century won’t find a way to compete with that frightening moniker. The eastern view from the Hammock Creek Bridge. Image by Diane Bedard. Ending on a High Note Aripeka is still a quaint, peaceful town, more akin to a village. Houses line the banks, folks fish from the bridges, motorcycles, and cars ride through on the main road, and the vibe is colorful and filled with nature. Another gentle step back into history Read the full article

Clean House at Secret Service Leadership
youtube
Former Secret Service agents Tim Miller and Scott Bryson say that the second assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump shows that it's time to clean house at the Secret Service and replace the agency's leadership.
"Well, that's the problem and, unfortunately, they're not held accountable," Miller said Tuesday during an appearance on Newsmax's "Carl Higbie FRONTLINE."
"These guys are fantastic agents, and they're doing everything they can, even at their own lives' risks, to go out there and do this every day. They deserve better leadership. When we're told that the Secret Service has corrected it, we've applied all the appropriate resources, we ought to be able to take that to the bank. That didn't happen, and I think the American people become more and more concerned about the ability of the mission, and that's what this is all about. It's the mission of the Secret Service to proactively prevent things like this from even happening, not waiting till the last minute and doing things that are reactive in nature."
Trump was playing golf at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday when a Secret Service agent spotted a gun barrel sticking out of a tree line.
The agent opened fire on the gunman, who was identified by law enforcement as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, before Routh had a chance to take a shot.
Routh fled the scene in his vehicle, but was arrested on I-95 in neighboring Martin County a short time later after a witness snapped a picture of his license plate and gave the information to authorities.
Bryson said Secret Service leadership needs to "100%" be cleaned out at the highest levels because "this is a serious job for serious people."
"I've worked for some guys in the past that were super old school, and I didn't like it at the time when I was a young agent, but now that I'm an older guy, I get it," he said. "I understand where they were coming from. … There's a standard. And whether it's Secret Service, FBI, or the police academy, there has to be a certain standard. I don't care if you're a man or a woman, straight or gay. The standard is the standard. If you meet the standard, you're on the team. If you don't, you're out."
Following the July 13 attempt on Trump's life in Butler, Pennsylvania, and Sunday's incident in Florida, Miller said, "I think the gloves have to come off here."
"This was another mission failure," he said. "Were it not for the heroic actions of a diligent, qualified, trained Secret Service agent to identify and go after this protectee, we would be having a very different conversation. But again, why weren't the resources applied?"

Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akner | Goodreads
"NATIONAL BESTSELLER • An exhilarating novel about one American family, the dark moment that shatters their suburban paradise, and the wild legacy of trauma and inheritance, from the New York Times bestselling author of Fleishman Is in Trouble
New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice • New York Magazine’s Beach Read Book Club Pick • Belletrist Book Club Pick
“A big, juicy, wickedly funny social satire . . . probably the funniest book ever about generational family trauma.”—Oprah Daily
“Joins the pantheon of great American novels . . . Long Island Compromise is an exploration of intergenerational trauma and an unabashed critique of income inequality . . . Brodesser-Akner has written a humane, brazen, gorgeous novel whose words dance exuberantly on the page.”—Los Angeles Times
“Is this book as good [as Fleishman is in Trouble]? It’s better. Sprawling yet nimble, this is [Brodesser-Akner’s] Big American Reform Jewish Novel . . . Brodesser-Akner is empathetic to her characters’ pathological inability to know themselves, but she is also merciless when it comes to the idea that acknowledging confusion is not enough.”—The New York Times
“Comprising immersive, tragicomic deep dives into the Fletchers’ personal pathologies and inner demons . . . Long Island Compromise is ingeniously plotted, its various storylines building toward several extremely satisfying plot twists . . .The potentially corrosive nature of wealth has rarely been explored with such humanity.”—The Atlantic
“Brodesser-Akner is a keen observer of class aspiration as a survival method.”—The New Yorker
“Were we gangsters? No. But did we know how to start a fire?”
In 1980, a wealthy businessman named Carl Fletcher is kidnapped from his driveway, brutalized, and held for ransom. He is returned to his wife and kids less than a week later, only slightly the worse, and the family moves on with their lives, resuming their prized places in the saga of the American dream, comforted in the realization that though their money may have been what endangered them, it is also what assured them their safety.
But now, nearly forty years later, it’s clear that perhaps nobody ever got over anything, after all. Carl has spent the ensuing years secretly seeking closure to the matter of his kidnapping, while his wife, Ruth, has spent her potential protecting her husband’s emotional health. Their three grown children aren’t doing much better: Nathan’s chronic fear won’t allow him to advance at his law firm; Beamer, a Hollywood screenwriter, will consume anything—substance, foodstuff, women—in order to numb his own perpetual terror; and Jenny has spent her life so bent on proving that she’s not a product of her family’s pathology that she has come to define it. As they hover at the delicate precipice of a different kind of survival, they learn that the family fortune has dwindled to just about nothing, and they must face desperate questions about how much their wealth has played a part in both their lives’ successes and failures.
Long Island Compromise spans the entirety of one family’s history, winding through decades and generations, all the way to the outrageous present, and confronting the mainstays of American Jewish life: tradition, the pursuit of success, the terror of history, fear of the future, old wives’ tales, evil eyes, ambition, achievement, boredom, dybbuks, inheritance, pyramid schemes, right-wing capitalists, beta-blockers, psychics, and the mostly unspoken love and shared experience that unite a family forever."

LÉGENDES DU JAZZ
LEROY VINNEGAR, ‘’MAITRE DE LA BASSE QUI MARCHE’’
“They hired me because I’m a nice guy and I disciplined myself. I didn’t talk back and did what I was told—I gave them what they wanted.”
- Leroy Vinnegar
Comme il l’avait expliqué plus tard, “I tried my hand at piano, and I would have been a nice piano player, had I stayed with it.” Vinnegar expliquait comment il était passé à la contrebasse: “The bass player used to leave his instrument at the house after we’d rehearse, and I just started messing with it, and the next thing you know I was playing the bass. We just got a communication going.”
Il racontait: “I was getting ready to make my push. I knew I had to get out of Indianapolis, so I could get my music career started. There were good musicians in Indianapolis, but I wanted to move up the ladder, so I figured I’d move to Chicago and tune up, and then I would go to New York.”
Comme Vinnegar l’avait expliqué avant d’éclater de rire: “Little did I know Chicago was just as fast as New York.’’ Il avait ajouté: “I thought I would just go there and get ready for the big one. Little did I know I was walking into a lion’s den. They were there waiting for my ass.” À l’époque, les contrebassistes dominants étaient Israel Crosby et Wilbur Ware. Vinnegar avait donc dû attendre patiemment son tour. Mais Vinnegar avait bientôt obtenu sa chance. Il précisait: “All the bass players were busy one week, and somebody said, ‘Hey there’s a new bass player in town by the name of Leroy Vinnegar.’ ‘Well, how does he play, man?’ ‘They say he can play, you know?’ ‘Well, we ain’t heard him.’ ‘Let’s try him and see. There ain’t nobody else here we can get.’”
Il expliquait: “I met some nice musicians up here and we started creating something.” Bank Tower. Comme l’avait confirmé l’épouse du contrebassiste Red Mitchell qui avait également décidé de s’installer en Oregon, Vinnegar ‘’was fully aware and grateful for what Portland and Oregon did for him.”
On y retrouve des noms comme Dexter Gordon, Howard McGhee, Gerry Mulligan, Ben Webster, Art Pepper, Jimmy Smith, Phineas Newborn, Sonny Stitt, Cedar Walton, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Gerald Wilson, Frank Morgan, Harold Land, Barney Kessel, Art Tatum, Hampton Hawes, Red Garland, Teddy Edwards, Kenny Drew, Serge Chaloff, Sonny Criss, Benny Carter, Chet Baker, Lionel Hampton, Pepper Adams, Buddy Collette et plusieurs autres. They hired me because I’m a nice guy and I disciplined myself. I didn’t talk back and did what I was told— I gave them what they wanted.”
I learned more from him than anyone else I ever played with.’’
