Comfortember Day 26: Getting Sleep

BD-1 likes to check in on everyone late at night once they're all asleep. After confirming the ship's systems are fully operational, with no Imperial frequencies anywhere in range, BD-1 hops off the helm and heads through the ship.

First, of course, is their bogling friend. She's curled up under the holotable, tail coiled around her body. A quick scan confirms she is sleeping peacefully. BD-1 has noted (and informed Cal) that the bogling likes the holotable's warmth and will sleep there whenever she can.

Next, the terrarium. Everything is growing well. Greez is a capable horticulturist. Here, BD-1 slides into a vent that he has mapped out and discovered will take him across all the cabins and back to the engine room. He'd told Cal a surprising number of socks had found their way into the vents. Cal asked if any would fit him. BD-1 suggested that they'd fit if he liked his socks to reach his waist. Cal replied he could've used socks like that on Ilum and Bracca.

Cal says lots of funny things.

The next stop on BD's tour is Greez's cabin. The vent outlet is directly over Greez's bed. Tonight, Greez is sleeping in his back, blanket tucked up to his neck. He sleeps less than everyone else, and, despite BD-1's probability calculations, does not snore. He's a very light sleeper (BD-1 accidentally woke him up one night during an exploration, and learned to move a lot quieter and slower in his hearing range. Greez really does know every single sound the Mantis should and should not make). Sometimes Greez will stay up late watching gambling streams (never betting. Not any more) or cooking shows on the holonet, but tonight, he is sleeping well. BD-1 moves on.

Crossing the hallway, dodging a sprocket that BD-1 is certain does not belong to any mechanisms aboard the Mantis and is therefore a complete mystery, he checks in on Cere and Merrin. Their bunks are against either wall. Merrin, BD-1 knows, is happy to have company again. Sometimes, when he runs his checks, he will hear Merrin and Cere talking until late into the night. One time, he listened to Merrin talking about how she practiced her teleporting with her sisters by playing hide and seek. Cere explains Jedi played hide and seek too by either muffling their presences in the Force or learning to manipulate the minds of others around them and making them simply not notice the Jedi moving among them. (BD-1 wants Cal to learn how to do this as soon as he can.) Tonight, however, Merrin and Cere are both sleeping peacefully. BD-1 knows sometimes Cere finds it hard to sleep, and she will slip from her cabin and spend the night in the galley drinking tea (BD-1 will often join her if he doesn't need a full recharge cycle). Tonight, she is asleep. Good. Humans require lots of sleep.

Finally, BD-1 heads to the engine room and hops out of the vent Cal loosened for him. Cal's asleep on his side, his back to BD-1. Cal sleeps heavily. So heavily, he doesn't notice when he talks or walks in his sleep. Tonight he isn't doing either. He has, however, kicked his blanket all the way down to his toes and his body temperature is creeping lower. Too low. It will wake him up. So, BD-1 hops onto the bed, works his way under the blanket, lifts it with his head, and drags it back up to Cal's shoulders. Cal doesn't even stir. Good.

Freeing himself, BD-1 hops off the bed and onto the workbench. It is time he plugged in for a recharge. His crew is safe, and now he can join them and get some much-needed rest.

A visit to the Old Castle, the Meersburg Burg is definitely mandatory to any visit to the charming medieval town on the shores of Lake Constance. With the (former) “oldest parts” of the castle dating back to the 7th century (Dagobert’s Tower), it is astonishing to say it’s the oldest inhabited castle in all of Germany. Yes, a family is still living inside the castle, in a rather regular-sized flat, with most of the areas and rooms open to the public. The Old Meersburg Castle is operated as a museum and accessible year-round. For sure the Museum is busier during public holidays, the spring and summer school holidays, and during specific events such as the annual medieval market in Meersburg. However, why not visiting the medieval castle in winter, to enjoy the joys of unheated structures yourself? Living conditions just like back in the days.

You can either visit Meersburg Burg on your own or, what I’d absolutely recommend, is by joining a guided tour. Free guided tours (just 20 minutes long) which are included in your regular ticket price start on a regularly scheduled basis right in front the restaurant on the first floor, or, as a group, you can book a private guided tour beforehand. Weapons at Sea

The Greek fire (ancient Greek Ὑγρὸν Πῦρ Hygròn Pýr, modern Greek Υγρό Υγρό Πυρ Igró Pir 'liquid fire') was a military firearm used in the Byzantine Empire since the 7th century. The name Greek fire (or ignis graecus) is not authentic; it was called πῦρ θαλάσσιον (pyr thalássion) sea fire or πῦρ ῥωμαϊκόν (pyr rhomaïkón) Roman fire by the Byzantines (who saw themselves as Romans).

This special weapon was used by the Byzantines in their numerous sea battles against the Ottomans. The dromons, which were Byzantine warships with two rows of oars similar to the Greek Triere, were equipped with a cauldron in which the liquid fire was located and sprayed onto the enemy ships with the help of a syringe.  There were three systems for this.:

The so-called siphon, itis known that it was made of bronze, soldered with tin and fired from below. In addition a nozzle is visible on pictures. It was most probably a pressure vessel which was connected to the nozzle by a valve. Possibly the overpressure in the tank was maintained by a pump. Only two persons operated a weapon, the other crew members did not have the necessary training. Depending on their size, the dromons were equipped with up to three siphons.

This was of decisive importance in the defence against the Arab siege of Constantinople (674-678). Already in Late Antiquity, both on the Eastern Roman side and among Rome's enemies, firearms had been constantly further developed and used. Thus, corresponding precursors seem to have been used shortly after 500 under Emperor Anastasius in the fight against the rebellious army master Vitalianus. Kallinikos resorted to these developments. His essential innovation, which in the end constituted the Greek fire, was the siphon, in modern terminology a kind of flamethrower. Even after Kallinikos the development continued. Thus handsiphon and strepton came into being at the end of the 9th or beginning of the 10th century.

The first traditional use took place during the siege of Constantinople by the Arabs, which lasted from 674 to 678, probably 677. The new weapon apparently contributed decisively to the fact that Byzantium was able to fend off the attackers - if this is true, it had an important influence on the course of world history, since Constantinople was able to prevent the penetration of Muslims into Europe in this way for centuries as a barrier bar. The fire quickly developed into one of the most feared weapons of the medieval world, with a great psychological effect.

According to contemporary reports, the use of Greek fire on the attacked ships must have caused an indescribable inferno. The use of the flamethrowers was accompanied by a thundering noise and, in view of the indelible fires that could be directed at will from the fire ship, no military discipline was possible on board any more. Another effect was that burning ships that retreated could also endanger their remaining fleet. Enemy ships therefore avoided approaching the Byzantine fleet in order not to get into the range of the fire. Otherwise the sight of a syringe often sufficed to drive the enemy into flight. However, the application could also set fire to own ships under certain circumstances. Greek fire was largely responsible for the centuries-long naval rule of the Byzantine fleet in the eastern Mediterranean area; it ensured the independence of the empire even when it was already unable to set up powerful land forces due to the decreasing population and area. The last documented use of Greek fire was in 1187 during the uprising of Alexios Branas. After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453 the knowledge about it is definitely lost. The absence of a mention despite many armed conflicts, however, makes the infamous looting of Constantinople in 1204 by the Crusaders appear as a plausible trigger for this loss.

The exact nature of the liquid fire cannot be said as this weapon was kept under strict secrecy and was not passed on to anyone. There are only a few sources that mention that the mixture was based on petroleum or asphalt, but not on any other material. These substances appeared in the Byzantine Empire near the Black Sea on the earth's surface. Further, not always present components were tree resin, sulphur and burnt lime, from the 10th century probably also saltpetre. However, the details of the production are not known. The frequently assumed self-ignition of the mixture in the water is not proven and would have made the weapon unsafe to handle. However, there was a variant called Pyr automaton which was said to have been flammable with water because it contained burnt lime.

A model for healthy living and resilience, the Edwin M. Lee Apartments is the first building in San Francisco to combine supportive housing for both unhoused veterans and low-income families. This collaboration—Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects, Saida + Sullivan Design Partners, Swords to Plowshares, and Chinatown Community Development Center—supports an integrated, equitable, and sustainable community in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood.

This 124,000-square-foot affordable housing development provides 62 apartments for formerly homeless veterans and 57 apartments for low-income families with ground-floor services for families, veterans, neighbors, and the greater community. Balancing civic scale with a feeling of home, the building enables sustainable lifestyles for its residents, prioritizing access to views and daylight, along with showcasing alternative energy generation and connections to nearby public transportation. The project frames a generous internal garden courtyard that balances a range of areas for retrospection, interaction and play.

With a GreenPoints Rated Platinum certification, the project includes abundant photovoltaic and solar hot water panels to reduce operating costs and provide sustainable energy. The photovoltaic renewable energy system is proudly on display to the public and an integral feature in the overall building’s civic design. The design’s material and assembly selections incorporate biophilic design principles; durable material selections and well-considered detailing are intended to reduce long-term operating and maintenance costs.

Dedicated to the late mayor of San Francisco, the Edwin M. Lee Apartments is an enduring tribute to his goal to end homelessness for veterans.

Namun, kali itu aku tidak berdua saja dengan satpam kantor. Ada satu orang lagi. Satpam yang sedang berotasi shift, pikirku. Aku ditemani Papa. Papa menunggu di halaman parkir yang cukup luas (Terima kasih Papa Rahimahullah, miss you so bad :*).

Tidak lama kemudian, Kak BD datang, disusul oleh si prajurit perang dunia, dan dua orang (satu laki-laki dan satu perempuan) berseragam biru muda.Semuanya berkumpul. Kami dipanggil ke ruang tengah, termasuk orang kuduga satpam.

Kami berbaris mendatar menghadap Bapak HRD Manager dan Ibu QA Engineer. Kami disuguhi kontrak kerja untuk ditandatangani dan diminta untuk berkenalan satu sama lain. Finally, I know their name.

Si “satpam” : Kak DJ

Si Prajurit Perang Dunia : Kak RD

Si Cewek Kemeja Biru : Mba Li

Si Koko Kemeja Biru : Ko HM

Dan satu orang tertinggal, Mas IV. Total 7 orang tim Management Trainee. Mba Li dan Ko HM adalah karyawan dari anak perusahaan, yang dikirim oleh bossnya untuk mengikuti program MT. Semacam upgrade kompetensi dan kegiatan pembelajaran. Setelah dibriefing mengenai jadwal satu minggu kedepan, kami diajak makan siang bersama. Dan setelahnya, kami mulai pulang ke rumah masing-masing. Cukup untuk hari itu. Aku masih jaga image, saat yang lain mulai repot bertukar nomor ponsel.

Tanggal 02 Februari 2016, kita mendapatkan PT di area Kalidoni sebagai site factory tour pertama. Disana kami dibagi menjadi 3 kelompok. Hari itu, Kak BD izin tidak masuk kerja, alasannya berobat, but the fact is, dia ikut tes di salah satu BUMN. Jadi, kita cuma berenam. Satu kelompok terdiri dari 2 orang. Aku sekelompok dengan Mas IV, dengan mentor operational manager langsung. Beliau mengajak kami berkeliling site, dari proses awal sampai export. Bahkan sampai perumahan karyawan. Aku dan Mas IV masih sangat bingung dengan proses disana. Bedanya Mas IV aktif bertanya, sedangkan aku, aku bahkan tidak mengerti dari awal.

Setelah diajak berkeliling site, kami diberi kesempatan untuk tanya jawab. Belum ada gambaran yang cukup jelas dalam benakku tentang proses kerja disana. Aku merasa seperti yang paling bodoh di kelompok MT ini. Tapi, I have to keep learning. I believe that I can.
