there had been too many personal losses in the past week for either boys in the apartment to handle on their own. but, in hopes of turning things around, julian busted out of his comfort zone, putting all his energy forward towards one goal: helping elijah. he made and drank his first cup of coffee in practically a week, and began to open up the little fake tree he bought with naomi not long ago. ( he blocked out the memory of her possibly seeing mayer–focus on the damn tree, julian. ) next came the couple boxes of ornaments he’d gotten on sale, setting them up to be opened on the couch after the tree was placed in the corner. it was as good as it was going to get. “elijah!” julian called out from the living room, shouting louder than he felt comfortable with. “i need your help!” he threw in a little urgency with his voice, hoping that, in his dark hole, elijah would find the motivation to come help him.

the sun shining through julian’s blinds woke ashley up. although not a stranger to waking up in unfamiliar beds, for a moment, she was disoriented. but it didn’t take long for her to remember what had happened the night before; from her call to julian to the marks on his back to him insisting she take the bed. eager to talk to him to see if his back was any better, ashley rolled out of julian’s bed and left his room. heading directly for the couch julian had set up on, she was only slightly surprised to find it empty; it wasn’t a huge shocker that julian was an early riser. shrugging, she turned to head to the kitchen to get a glass of water. “hey eli,” she said casually, shooting him a smile as if it was normal for her to be in his kitchen.

he’d be a liar to say the events in the basement didn’t stick with him. there were a lot of things that lingered in the back of his mind, only slightly overshadowed by more pressing matters. he would love to PRETEND none of it bothered him, but given how much it seemed to rest with everyone else, that wasn’t exactly an option. it was hardly the worst thing the mysterybusters had ever experienced, but it was the first encounter in  ━━ what, a year? for the newest members, it was their first with the team. he supposed that left them all with more than enough reason to be a little shaken, especially considering the reveal at the end. then again, it would be a lot more traumatic if the caller hadn’t just been daniel.  (  small blessings, or whatever.  )

micah was rather useless, in comparison to the others. he wasn’t as smart as vee, nor did he have an eidetic memory, like julian. his only talent, it seemed, was pretending to be a nice person long enough to book them a few hotel rooms. he was nothing special. EVEN SO, he found it hard to forget the little things he learned about his friends. like the fact that naomi was getting about as much sleep as he was, for some of the same reasons, the fact that julian probably had a few encounters with bullies in high school, isaiah was basically an old man in an athlete’s body, and verena likened pumpkin spice lattes to poison.

the fact that elijah couldn’t be trusted to keep ahold of his own inhaler was only among the most recent and exasperating things he couldn’t forget.

it wasn’t micah’s problem. no, it really wasn’t. he might’ve had the personality and height of a ten year old, but elijah was a grown man. he was old enough to know better than to leave his inhaler when traveling into a basement full of supposedly cursed items. if he had some sort of attack while in that basement, then that was his problem, and it would not rest on micah’s conscience. it wouldn’t bother him at all.

he repeated it over and over again in his mind, as if that could SOMEHOW change the fact that he was still running his finger over the spare inhaler in his pocket. if you asked micah why he’d gotten one, he would tell you that it was his. he’d caught pneumonia once when he was younger, and they’d prescribed him inhalers, in case his lungs ever started acting up again. six years later, he was still refilling his prescription, though he didn’t need it. if you asked why he’d suddenly started carrying it around after the basement incident, he would tell you that the seasonal change was messing with his breathing. he was rather good at lying.

upon seeing elijah, he took his hand out of his pocket, pretending for all he was worth that the inhaler wasn’t there.    ❛  morning.  ❜
