how differently people treat archie & betty in regards to the cheating really doesn’t sit right w me. a lot of people excuse archie as confused whereas betty gets a lot of the backlash w people wanting physical violence between her & v & wanting betty to have 0 friends lmao

2/2 they’re either equal to me on some days bc i tend to not think of rvd as of late (a win for me!) or i prefer betty bc really i always have bc i’m not the biggest archie fan, plus to me she tried to and wanted to stop it so it just gives her a tad of an edge but just my opinion

You know, I am with you on the double standard, anon. I tend to see the opposite on my dash - an insane amount of Archie hate and people excusing Betty. I have, however, seen both. I think it is really important to keep a few things in mind:

1. Actors are not their characters and they have no creative control. That means it really doesn’t matter what KJ or Lili ship, they get next to no input on their character’s decisions. 

2. The women in this show are, generally speaking, written by men. They exist, in so many ways, as a male fantasy. I got really annoyed during my rewatch roundabout the third episode, when they tried to do this whole “men treat us as objects and it’s wrong” plotline. Frankly, it’s a plotline Riverdale doesn’t have any right to do. Betty’s very first scene was her in a bra, and she’s canonically 15. If the show does do a cheating plotline, it will be ostensibly from Betty’s perspective, but written by a man. That makes a huge difference. 

3. The men on Riverdale are writer self-inserts. I can’t stress that enough. Ted has actually admitted this in as many words. Jughead is wronged because Ted feels wronged by women. Jughead is a handsome (eh), talented person with a large circle of friends and (the show is convinced) a talent for writing because that’s Ted’s self insert. His girl gets taken by the all-American, fit, handsome (god I hate this) guy because that’s something Ted views as what would happen to a guy like him. Betty’s behaviour has no complexity, because it’s written through the lens of an adult man. Whether or not a man wrote these specific scenes that are so anti-Betty, the show is entirely conceptualized as a male-gaze thirst trap, and all its characters act accordingly. 

4. The show cares very little about relationship complexities, and I am not just talking about the Bughead vs. Barchie. I am talking about the intricacies of friendship, too. Veronica was willing to drink poison for Betty. The show is great at big gestures like that, but absolutely useless in the small scenes that would act as narrative scaffolding for this. The fact that this would ruin the friendships of the main characters was treated as very much an afterthought, when the show wants us to believe these characters are important to each other. 

5. The show gave us no thoughts from Archie’s perspective. I have long thought of Archie as a character who acts before thinking. That’s carried him through four years. It is not inconceivable that Archie would impulsively act on his “feelings” for Betty with no regard for the consequences. But we have no background on what motivated Archie in this particular instance. They never took the time to give us this situation from his perspective, and it would have been SO easy to write more narrative scaffolding on this from Archie’s perspective. Veronica was busy this season. Perhaps her and Archie drifted a bit apart because of it. Maybe Archie finally began to realize how different he and Veronica are, and because Jughead was also holding a plotline mostly independent of Betty in the beginning of this season, it would have been easy to have them spend a bit more time together. That would have been narrative scaffolding if they were going the whole “nostalgia” route. But we never received any indication that Veronica and Archie were starting to drift. This entire plotline was the cheapest way to create end-of-season drama from writers who can’t properly create story structure. 

6. The Betty and Archie of 4x17 and 4x18 bear little to no resemblance to the Betty and Archie of the rest of the show. 

All this to say, despite the length of this, I really don’t spend much time on it, anon. We know the writers are terrible at their jobs. I’m going to close this off with this quote which I think sums it up perfectly:

“...where it concerns Riverdale, there is no evidence to suggest that the writers have ever been adept at their jobs. Riverdale has always been a show that makes sh*t up as it goes along, aborts arcs whenever it feels like it (where’s Betty’s brother and Chic?), and has no problem with disconnecting from reality when it writes itself into a corner. Riverdale is primarily a vehicle to serve KJ Apa’s abs and lingering close-ups on the thighs of the female cast members.”

Theories and opinions: DAMIEN

I did this with Wilford Motherloving Warfstache and Who Killed Markiplier, now I’m gonna throw my opinion on the table that no one asked for concerning Mark’s latest project that has been kept secret for so long; Damien.

Like I’ve done in the past and will continue to do, I’m going to rewatch the whole video and pause, giving my second thoughts on certain scenes. 

Second time through

- I actually really appreciate their dynamic in the beginning. Damien being more positive and optimistic, and Celine is a bit more brutally realistic. Granted she knows what’s actually going on there.

- Still trying to understand why Damien is hearing William and Abe’s conversation

- I love the duel colored lighting on Celine’s face when she’s standing in the doorway. Really nice

- MASK MASK MASK MASK!!!

- Obvious trap on the lake is obvious

- other things I’m realizing second time through that are obvious; there’s the broken body they left him

- there’s the trouble with playing multiple characters; it’s hard to differentiate how you play them

- “That woman would carve my heart out,” good call back to Wilford’s line and beautiful foreshadowing

- color changing to red when tensions rise. I like that

- Mark’s smile will never not be creepy like that

- Actor Mark is wearing a fucking mask, it creepy me the fuck out

- You should have gone for the head.

- “LET ME HELP YOU!” ... alright. Yeah. That got me right in the heart. And the music picking up was just kick I needed.

- Damien being clueless is how I feel every time Mark makes these projects

- I was going to ask where is the DA during this, but I forgot that we got pushed into a mirror. rip

Opinions

Okay now I’ll talk about my actual thoughts about the video. I absolutely loved it. There are still a few things I’m confused on, but I’ll get to that. The art style is beautiful. The sound design was so good, there were certain spots that I rewatched a few times to catch the sounds. 

The one thing I will say about the voice acting is that Mark and Damien act and sound too similar, especially when they’re yelling at each other. I get that they’re it’s same person acting, but having distinction between two characters that overlap so much is important to a narrative. They both kinda have that sophisticated, dapper attitude, both being kinda famous and rich. Like it’s easy to distinguish characters like Wil and Dark because they’re so different, and that’s what makes them easier to understand. I’m not gonna crap on characters I know Mark has worked a lot on and that I don’t know about, so I’ll stop here.

There are a few things I wanna talk about that I’m taking into my interpretation that I hope gets cleared up when Mark does a livestream talking about it. So I’ll move on to my theories.

Theories

One thing that I figured out through people bringing it up on tumblr is the mask. I was skeptical at first, but it was soon confirmed when I rewatched it. So the mask that was used during Mark’s little cult fiasco on tumblr a while back. This image

Yeah that’s the same face we keep seeing around that video except decayed and absolutely terrifying.That whole event was centered around smiling and spreading positivity (granted it was all chaos and toxic bc people went overboard) and the face we keep seeing, even though its mouth is decaying, it’s still clear it was smiling. I swear I’m gonna be seeing that face from the mirror shot in my nightmares. Speaking of that decayed body we keep seeing. I made a joke about it but that vv

That to me is the broken body that Mark left them with at the end of Who Killed Markiplier. That’s Mark’s body after years of dying over and over again. From being shot, stabbed, drowned, poisoned, and whatever else happened to him in that time Celine left him. 

This video has direct references to Go back to sleep. I first realized it seeing Celine’s body floating, but going back again, Damien said “Some things can’t be fixed.” That makes me requestion a lot of that video. Who is the speaker? Who are they speaking to. They say “you built this place fore broken things,” which I presume is Celine. But then we see shots of her, and then hear them say “go back to sleep.” which contradicts what Mark says here.

This video really made me rethink Mark’s whole role. Yeah he’s still an asshole like we’ve seen, since he’s pushing all the blame on Celine, making himself the center of attention, but there were some things that seemed... out of character. Honestly he started acting a lot more like the Darkiplier we know from ADWM than Damien does. The distorted voice when he speaks and the big sudden outbursts make me think that. We see him get angry followed by cracking just before he’s able to pull himself together and calm down. Which to me directly parallels how Dark acts during our “date” in ADWM. Personally I’m interested to see how Damien becomes Dark in the future if that happens.

So Celine’s powers are a bit... unclear. It seems like in this, supported by her actions and Mark’s words, she’s kind of in control of this setting. My understanding is that Celine made the cabin when she realized sending her, Damien and the DA back was a bad idea, prior to Damien pushing the DA out. So she made it to protect her and Damien. The snow storm is Dark trying to get to them, maybe. Celine seems to have a bit of control over Damien as well. Since he kinda reacts when she tells him to get some sleep. The fact that she is in charge without a second thought supports that. Also the fact that she doesn’t sleep and we don’t see here huddled by the fire when Damien returns, like she doesn’t need it. She may not be in total control over the world, but at least the cabin. The cracks in the window, to me is more like Dark trying to get in instead of Mark. And the cracks are fixed whenever the loop repeats

Remaining questions

Why can we hear Wilford and Abe’s voices? I’m still not sure I understand that. It’s not like it’s a flash back. Damien wasn’t at those events so how is he hearing that? I know that Wilford in that video talked about mixed up crazy timelines but Damien is basically in a dream so how is this happening?

The point I made where Mark starts to act a lot like Dark still confuses me. If I didn’t know better I would have thought he was the one to turn into Darkiplier. I  honestly just have a hard time seeing Damien being the person we see in ADWM, but that’s my opinion.

Also does no one care about the DA!?! Or is it just me!?! Just me?! Ok cool!

The flower

I thought at first it was just a red herring, but it popped up for a few frames later. They were purposely meant to be there for just a split second, so that if you weren’t paying attention, you’d miss it. A lot of people are saying it’s supposed to be Damien’s connection with Wilford, and I’m inclined to agree, but for different reasons.

The main thing I want to know is what kind of flower is this? My first thought when I saw it was Hibiscus, but some people are saying it’s a lily. Going with my first thought, I looked up flower meanings, and there are a lot around Hibiscus, many connecting with beauty. My personal favorite is the Chinese meaning, which says it represents wealth and fame. Ties in a lot with our boy Mark here. However going even more specific is the color, and this one kinda solidified it to me. Pink hibisucs flowers are meant to represent friendship. Love towards people beyond your partner. Seeing a pink Hibiscus then hearing Wil’s voice, that just fills me with so much nerd energy and love. 

Those are just my thoughts on the whole matter. I’m excited to see more that Mark has to show us. Let me know if you have any thoughts on what I’ve said, I’d love to talk more on this whole matter. It’s really a lot of fun.

okay let me preface this by saying that freya is entirely the result of me rewatching blue water high bc childhood nostalgia

her mum became pregnant at eighteen from a boyfriend who bailed the moment he found out, and since then it’s really just been the two of them, with the occasional help from her grandparents

she’s incredibly close with her mother tbh, considering her a best friend as well as family, and there’s nothing she wouldn’t do for her. her mother is the most loving person she’s ever met ( though a bit naive, preferring to look at the world through rose-coloured glasses ), and freya considers herself incredibly blessed to have been given this family and childhood, the two of them in their cramped but wonderful apartment overflowing with love 

saturday movie nights with an abundance of snacks is a longstanding tradition in the ainsley household, most commonly romantic comedies playing because those are her mother’s favourite and freya likes to see how happy they make her 

when freya was nine, they moved to melbourne for a few months because freya’s mum thought she had met the love of her life. he’d come to scotland for work, and when he had to return home, the ainsleys followed. freya didn’t mind: he was kind, and caring, and he made her mother happier than she had ever seen her. freya fell in love with australia from the moment she set foot there, in particular the beaches and surfing. she got to take surfing lessons, and the dream of becoming a pro surfer manifested itself pretty quickly

however, it eventually came out that her mother’s boyfriend already had a wife and family there. heartbroken, she broke it off immediately, and though she tried to make life work for herself and freya there alone, she eventually made the decision to move back to scotland where their loved ones lived and had a real support system. freya was devastated to move back even though she understood the reason why, but she decided that she would move back when she was old enough and had the funds to support her

ngl freya’s reaction to finding out she was a witch was just ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ guess we’re doing this now alright then

does love magic a whole lot tho but she has no plans of leaving the muggle world behind, wants to find a good balance so she can be part of both worlds rather than living in one extreme or the other

her mother is probably more excited about freya being a witch than she is lmao, she’s just always been the type of person to believe in fairytales and such so her reaction was just !!!! when the letters arrived and eventually the professor to explain everything to them. freya tries to keep her as up to date with everything from her education to the culture of the wizarding world so she can feel part of it too 

freya was sorted into hufflepuff almost immediately, barely any consideration from the sorting hat needed. she values and embodies all its traits, really: kindness and loyalty and dedication and hard-work, more than anything. 

one of her most notable traits is her quiet determination. she’s not one to brag about the goals she sets for herself, she just puts in the hard work the moment she settles on something and strives toward achieving it without any fuss or attention, really. she’s a walk the walk type of girl. she moves with life’s waves and adjusts her strategy when obstacles occur, not letting them keep her down for long. she can be incredibly stubborn and incorrigible when she sets her mind to something ( such as becoming a pro surfer ), but she’s also chill enough to adjust however she needs to achieve those goals. she keeps her ambitions mostly to herself --- not, like, a secret: if anyone were to ask, she’d gladly talk about them, she just doesn’t have much desire to get much attention beforehand. everyone will see when she has actually achieved her goals, after all 

keeps a very rigorous training schedule for herself, and charms the black lake to make real waves she can surf on. the professors were all pretty baffled, when it first occurred --- but, well. freya’s heading into her seventh year now, so they’ve pretty much given up on trying to keep her from doing it. they’ve realized that whatever punishments they throw her way has zero impact; she just returns the moment she has some free time again

not really.... a troublemaker per se, like she’s not really one to intentionally be rebellious or come up with the crazy plans, but she can probably be seen that way. she’s definitely an enabler, and goes along with whatever wild ideas her friends come up with mild curiosity and amusement ( such as molly’s idea of becoming a surfing cheerleader or putting rollerblades on her high heels ), but she’s not usually the brain behind the operation. she’s still there in the middle of the mess, though, so maybe that doesn’t make much of a difference 

she’s got a summer job at an old-school muggle diner, uniform complete with rollerblades and all, and she absolutely adores it 

her best friend is molly weasley, and they have a summer tradition to stay at each other’s homes for a few weeks each summer, so freya is currently staying with her, and is sharing a tent and such with her rn because she doesn’t own one herself. like half of freya’s exposure to the wizarding world is thanks to molly hjsahdaj bless her so she’s been able to be around wizards more during breaks and such than she otherwise would have been, tho now that she’s 17 and can apparate she can be around both worlds more frequently which is neat 

i’m probably forgetting something hjagdjs but yeah freya’s a pretty social and chill person to be around?? up for whatever really?? 

i took the pottermore patronus test for her and got a dolphin which is like... surprisingly accurate and i love it okay bye
