Okay, I did a fic rec list last year for 2019, and nobody asked for this, but you know what, I’m gonna do another one. Really the only thing I wanna look back on about 2020 is the fic- bc damn there were some good ones!

Same as last year, these are fics that were completed in 2020. (So no in-progress fics here)

So here goes, 20 fic recs for 2020, in no particular order! And full disclosure, these are all totally different ratings/pairings/whatever.

I’m really shy first meeting people and take a while to warm up to them.

I think Caesar would be a great match with you because he’s so charming and charismatic, so warming up to him might be way easier than with Ris & Kak. He’d probably know what to say and how to adjust his forwardness because he’s spent so much time talking (and flirting lol) to other people, so he probably has a good grasp on social cues. I can also see him toning it down if it makes you uncomfortable, but generally speaking, Caesar would be easy to warm up and open to (out of the 3 here) because of his more extroverted nature.

Kakyoin is said to be polite & formal on a normal basis and also speaks in a softer (more traditionally feminine) manner, which might be great because there’s no sense of pressure or awkwardness/anxiousness there and it might help you warm up faster, but politeness also has that sense of distance and barrier, which is kinda hard to break through because being polite and being kind is way different.

Risotto mf looks like the type that’s like ‘A man of few words’ in authoritative situations or with strangers, so it might not be easy with him. You have to be the one to stick it out longer with him I feel, he would take the longest to warm up to someone which might take u longer to warm up to too.

Caesar looks like someone who would appreciate and get into collecting vintage items imo, so the chances of him admiring your collecting and joining in on your hobby/interest is higher than the other 2 (imo ofc)

Caesar delivers. Anywhere & anytime. You don’t even have to ask for more with him because he’ll be giving you his physical affection at every chance he gets, whether it’s something as simple as having a hand on your back and stealing kisses in public, or draping himself over you when he comes home to you just to accidentally fall asleep with his face buried in your neck. Risotto looks like he doesn’t do much pda, so private time is where you’d get most of your affections from him, and even then, I can see him being less touchy than Kak & Caesar. Won’t mind if you’re draping off him, but I feel like he’s more on the mild/moderate side on physical affection.

I can see Caesar being the most interested in your ever-evolving fashion sense and roller skating interest, so there’ll be lots of shopping and roller skating together. Would turn them into dates too because he loves seeing your style evolving. I can see him giving serious input if you’re unsure. He also looks like the type to try to match outfits with you? Whether it’s color scheme or just a little belt chain thing, he’d think it’s cute as hell.

Caesar also looks like he’s only good at certain types of games, but he also looks like he’ll be competitive with you in the games he’s not good and great at, so that’s quite fun in its own yk? Game dates uwu

All of them are quite decisive people I’d say? They are pretty ‘solid’ people if yk what I mean. They know what they want and they go after it, so it might be hard for them to get why you don’t operate the same.

But I can see Caesar being a good fit with this bc its said that when he truly cares for someone it is true love, so I think he’ll try his best to be understanding, to get through it by your side, he’ll push you, encourage you, and his seriousness means you know he’s not just saying shit to appease.

It’s the German words for yes (ja) and no (nein) merged together, and in this case, it’s basically a (cautious but somewhat hopeful) MAYBE

Let me elaborate on that.

Do I believe Malex is dead? Nope (NEVER!!!),Tyler and Vlamis have so much chemistry, even when Alex and Michael are not in a relationship, sparks keep flying and every time they so much as look at each other, that look is telling an entire story about their cosmic love, and how much they wish they could be together. And with double the screentime for Malex this season, we’re in for a treat of tons of these moments, everything else will pale in comparison! 🙌

Do I hope Malex will eventually start a romantic relationship? Absolutely!

* There’s no doubt that Malex are it, that they are meant to be, that they are in love (Present Tense!), and that they are written (mirroring Echo in many ways) like they are endgame. The question isn’t necessarily about if it will happen, but when [I’ve talked about that when and my worries they’ll drag it out until the last episode at length in previous posts, no need to repeat all of that].

Meaning I doubt there’ll be much, if any actual Malex romance in S2, but I hope they’ll start a romantic relationship in S3 (which then will be put through the drama wringer bc playing trauma bingo is fun…)

Some things we know about S2 so far:

Malex won’t be in a relationship, instead they’re trying to figure out “whether they even like each other” (Tyler’s words), and how to be friends

Michael’s in a really bad place when S2 starts. He’s just lost his mother and brother, had his bodily autonomy taken away by said brother who healed his hand without his consent, and knows the - seemingly - last alien who might have had answers about where they are from and what brought them to earth died at the hands of Max. In addition, Alex told him in 1x09 that they are over, that Alex left when he showed him his ship (and told him he’s been trying to leave the planet) in 1x10, and he got in a life and death situation with Alex in 1x12, where he had to make a decision between dying with his mom, and leaving with Alex. That is A LOT, and we know he’s gonna spiral pretty badly during the first half of the season. He’s not in a position to be with anyone atm tbh

Heather confirmed at aTVfest, that “it’s always gonna be a rocky road for Michael and Maria”, and whereas she describes their energy as “chaotic and fiery” (just what Michael’s been looking for…🙃) , there’s a place where Michael’s found true peace in the past.

For[r]est has been described as a new love interest for Alex, and from the cast wrap photo we know, that he’s still around in 2x13. That doesn’t necessarily mean they will still be an item by then tho (neither does it mean they’ve broken up, just wanted to point out that it can go either way).

As much as I would’ve preferred that M/M imploded right away, I don’t think it’s gonna be the happy easy thing Michael’s been hoping for, and after everything that’s been said yesterday and how 2x01 sets things up,  I also have my doubts it’s gonna last. So while I’m still supremely MEH about it happening at all, I’m glad it happens now (still ‘early days’), and I also think there’s not enough potential for them to go on for several seasons (I could of course be horribly wrong about that, looking at how S1 went, if the writers are hellbent on making it happen, they will)

That brings me back to the JEIN of it all.

I think Malex will start this season in a very bad place, both individually, and as a potential couple. They will probably hurt each other and things will be painful for a while. 🥺

As a mono shipper (i.e. someone hating the mere idea of either of them being with someone else), it’s gonna be hard for me to watch them pursue relationships with other people, but according to aTVfest they are going to have twice as many scenes together as in S1, and thanks to that, I expect them to get closer throughout the season.

I hope they’ll be able to work through some of their issues while they are not a romantic item (the ‘emotional distance’ should be in their favor and help them to overcome some of the pain), and in doing so, building a foundation for a future relationship as a couple.

Bc lets be real, they don’t have that atm. They have that cosmic pull (”The pieces want to be together”), they still love each other fiercely, but being together probably wouldn’t work so well at the moment. Again, I hate that they’re going to be with others, but I hope not being with each other will be in their favor in the long run.

So this is how things are going to be for most of S2 (which we’ve pretty much known about since NYCC), and I don’t expect them to get together this season. I do hope that they’ll be in a better place with each other by the time of the S2 finale tho, and that the potential for them to get together in S3 is there. Given Carina’s knack for drama, it’s really hard to tell how things will continue in S3 and beyond tho, and whether there’s hope they’ll start a relationship next season. We’ll probably have a better idea of that in June.

TL;DR: I’m looking forward to aaaaall the Malex scenes this seasons, their undeniable chemistry, their cosmic bond, their developing friendship, everything else paling in comparison to what they have, Tyler and Vlamis continuing to champion Malex, every Vlamburn moment we’ll get along the way, and every single moment of Alex Manes (AND BUFFY) on my screen. ✨💚👽

i watched cap marvel like a week ago so here are my thoughts on that~~ spoilers of course

carol is a character who has been held back all of her life even before she was taken by the kree. and after being taken in by them, she’s had to “fight with one arm tied behind her back.” she’s told that the powers she has arent even truly her own but instead are a privilege given to her and can be taken away by the kree if they deem her to be unworthy of them.

her whole life on hala was one of being manipulated and internalizing this idea that she must repress her abilities because theyre a threat to those who want to use her

which makes her final interaction with yon rogg when she tells him that she has nothing to prove to him so cathartic!

i’ve seen a few reviews that say that carol doesnt rly have a character arc bc all she does is “get stronger” rather than undergo an actual internal change but i just... dont think that is true lmao

i understand how her just going from being able to shoot photon blasts to being able to shoot photon blasts but theyre more powerful and also she glows can seem unsatisfying at first?

often in superhero origin films, the heroes gotta be shitty at their powers first and it’s through ~character development~ that their skills grow? i.e. iron man and doc strange for example. even with thor who already had powers and was skilled with them had to lose his powers and undergo character development to regain them in both thor 1&3

but carol is never bad at her powers? shes told and we the audience are told by yon rogg and the supreme intelligence that she cant control her powers well. and so i can see the audience being kinda put off by the fact that theres never any evidence that thats true? but the fact that it’s not true is the whole point.....

carol’s character arc isnt about learning to take up the mantle of a true superhero in the way iron man and doc strange’s movies are about that. carol is already capable of being a hero and her arc is just one of self-discovery and breaking free of the expectations placed on her by those who just want to use her. she has to learn that she doesnt have to repress herself for the benefit of others but instead is free to be the best she can be

and so her already being skilled with her powers isnt a flaw. it serves that arc.

buuuut i think a case can be made on whether or not that arc was executed well. imo i feel like it couldve been done better but as it is it’s fiiine. i will say that although i enjoyed the movie it did feel like it was missing something that hooked me the way that like... black panther or thor ragnarok did?

and that missing something is: while the groundwork for the themes and her character are there, i dont think they were explored thoroughly enough? like they didnt dig deep enough.

bc carol’s whole physical journey is finding out that she’s human and the kree lied to her and... that was kind of obvious from the beginning?? maybe we dont know the specific details and all but when carol finally realizes that yeah! she was a human! it’s like.... ok... we finally got here. i mean it’s not like there were many other roads this mystery couldve gone down

i just think the journey of self discovery shouldnt have taken the sole form of learning that shes human? bc then the betrayal by the kree doesnt really hit as hard as it should. like it makes it feel like the only thing they did wrong to her personally is lie about the fact that shes human and.... i just dont think the fact that shes human is all that relevant?

like yeah the kree being imperialists is enough to want to kick their asses but the protagonist’s relation to their antagonist is important making the stakes feel high and the protagonist’s triumph truly cathartic

them lying to her about being a human just isnt a big enough deal to me especially considering it was foreshadowed real early on already.

instead they shouldve focused on her relationship with the kree and the ways they made her feel like she had to repress herself for their approval. but she spends very little time with the kree. and the closest person to her on hala is yon rogg.... and we dont rly get much info about their relationship either? i did like the scene where she tells him that she has nothing to prove to him... but that wouldve had A LOT more impact if we had seen examples prior to this of how often yon rogg would belittle her or how often she’d have to conform to his expectations for his approval. she has nothing to prove to him by the end of the film but it never rly seemed like she was rly after her approval in the first place? we know when she communes with the first intelligence she expresses a desire to serve in their military and  that’s one instance of expressing a desire for approval buuUUuuuut the supreme intelligence lets her serve immediately after that conversation and on that mission there isnt rly any example of her team not trusting her to do anything? theres no example of her having to conform to their expectations? i mean theres that one scene where she says she’ll go ahead alone and yon rogg said No but that is... an incredibly small thing.

i feel like it’s kind of implied? that carol grew up in an abusive/dysfunctional family and thats part of why the rambeaus made her a part of their own family?? and i kinda wish that was explored more. and instead of her journey being focused soley on finding out she’s human, it’s her gradually connecting the dots between her abusive upbringing on earth and how similar it was to the way the supreme intelligence/yon rogg treated her and her realizing how manipulative they are........... and rather than her finally finding out that they lied to her about being human being her sole personal stake against the kree, it’s instead just the final nail in the coffin and the reveal wouldve had more impact

anyway!! rly hope they explore her character more in her next solo movie whenever that’s happening bc i doubt there’ll be a lot of time for that to happen in endgame

overall i rly like carol and i liked the movie and im honestly a little bitter about ppl saying she has no personality and no character arc! bc she does! it’s there! maybe it’s not as well executed as some other marvel films

Ever had that weird feeling when you’re sitting (or peeing) and suddenly it’s like you’re losing everything? (I mean, ok, you’re losing your pee, lol). Everything just becomes too much, and you either prepare to cry, (bonus points if you curl up in a fetal position, ‘cause on the toilet seat that's practically gymnastics) or grab a bag of popcorn, your midnight bathroom snack, not caring that you’re going bonkers (I respect that, you da hood). Except for the buttered popcorn, nothing about it is fun, yet it’s happened to every single one of us.

To cut short this intro, here’s how NOT to lose your shit. It’s time to take complete ownership of your life (someone cue the dramatic music, I don’t have a stereo. #BROKE-AF).

Someone amazing once said “your brain is your most valuable tool.�� That's true. Once you learn how to control your mind, you will start to see that we, being the dumb idiots that we are, over-complicate the simplest of things. You’re not losing your shit (but finish that popcorn anyway). Your mind just convinced you that you are. My wise friend once said that it’s either you directing your mind or it’s the other way around. Show your mind who’s boss and conquer it. Here’s how:

Don’t make excuses. Not only does it piss off Miss Honey and your dog (your dog has better things to eat, my dude), but it robs you of the opportunity to learn from your mistakes. As I always say, life is not a report card. It's never perfect, and it’s the little flaws that push you to aim higher. In the end, life is just growth as a human being (or as a basic hoe, like me). Here’s an example of taking full responsibility for your actions:

 Action: You didn’t submit your essay on time.

 Normal response:  “I didn’t know about the essay.”

                               “My dog ate up my entire computer.”

                               “I was saving the world from zombies.”

Conqueror talk: “I didn’t get in my essay, for that no excuse is valid. I have learned from this and you can expect better next time.”

Miss Honey will be pleased.

I’m a firm believer that emotions hinder productivity. Now, don’t get me wrong, emotions are great. There are many things to shed tears on. Tris from Divergent died. Trump became President. You just got friend-zoned. It’s great to have emotions in cases like these. But when it comes down to getting work done, it’s better to have a firm control over them.

Imagine trying to finish that crappy essay 3 mins before your deadline when Sophia from book club comes up all like “Did you hear what Archie just said to me? He’s such a jerk.” That’s torture. Honestly, it's a miracle we get team assignments done because there is always that one friend who’s either crying over an ex or dying over how cute puppies are.

When working, choose productivity over pride. The reason being, it not only affects your quality of work by distracting you but also makes you the 90 year old grannie shouting from behind in the supermarket line. People legit fly away in the other direction when they see you.

But of course, in other cases, go ahead and release the waterworks. I’m still crying over Mufasa’s death anyway.

(I’m about to get deep, wearing that diving suit, alright). Conquering is hard. There’ll be days when you’ll feel like doing anything but that boring report Miss Honey assigned. Like, who cares whether the Nile or the Amazon is longer?

However, the mindset of a conqueror is so strong that the little demon called procrastination doesn’t stand a chance. You’ll see us partying the whole weekend because we already slayed ‘em rivers and hunted down those fishies Friday. Wanna join in? Here are some aspects of the conqueror mindset: 

Procrastination isn’t allowed. We understand that procrastination not only wastes precious time but basically means partying on a guilty mind. We would rather be that person drinking all them shots than be Abby sitting in the corner, worrying about her calc HW.

Discipline. Every conqueror knows that things need to be done at the right time (and in the right way, of course). Playing slither.io is great, but if you’re hooked for 7 hours and your poor report on rivers has turned into a dust bunny, then mate, you are not conquering. Get up and get the job done already.

Time management. It’s 11:58 pm. Your report (lol, get a grip mate) has finally been wiped of all that dust, and you’re settling to start on it. You open the first page of the assignment and have a mini heart attack. It says: Due by 12 am, xx Feb ‘18). To become a conqueror, hence, you must learn to travel back in time. JK. To become a conqueror, it’s important to value time because it's priceless. A year from now, those hours you spent eating all that snake kill in slither.io won't mean shit, but if you grind, if you choose to work hard, then every single moment will be memorable and pay off.

So, how do you do it? Ok, grab your notebook, grab your cauldron, and jot down. Let’s see what we got here... ‘Add a horn of bicorn’ and just a little bit of -what’s that- salamander blood?” *Potion explodes* Um, sorry for that mess. *Waves wand to clean*

Point is, there’s no secret spell to becoming disciplined and focused. Put down that wand, please. I’ll explain.

If you truly want to take control of your life, you must know your why. Why do you want to? Maybe you’re sick of procrastinating and letting yourself down? Maybe you're tired of being a couch potato and want to get that ass to the gym? Maybe Abby wants to drink them tequila shots too? Because unless you really want it, you won’t get it. It’s important to know your why and let it lead you into battle as your motivation.

In short, you have to be a superhero (I choose to be Superwoman!) and learn to conquer your life before you save Kim from the fire. Your life is truly valuable, and here's a secret: If you want to get results you have never gotten before, you're going to have to do things you've never done before. Everyone gets the same 24 hours in a day, the same opportunities, and the same chances to follow their dreams. They just make different choices. If you choose to re-watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S. for the 58th time while balancing chips in one hand and popcorn in the other, our world will lose one of its heroes.

But if you do decide to put on that superhero cape, I’m with you. Kim, hang on. We’re coming for you.

You’ve got to accentuate the positive...

It really doesn’t take much for people to say a TV show has gone stale. Or, that a season is bad because of an episode arc. And something I won’t do is judge what I already love on the basis of a few spoilers or a few episodes (or episode arc). I’m used to it by now to be 100% affected by the ugh of it all...

By 6.11 of Arrow, I wasn’t alone in hailing s6 as the best season of arrow. It has everything in it: Oliver’s growth. Olicity getting married. Starting a family (this coming from the man who used to think he’d die alone). Diggle getting some focus once again (though I question why he wants to be GA, because in every prior season, he hasn’t even mentioned it). Felicity being so clearly strong willed (especially in 6.03/04/07/08/09/10/11) and effortlessly brilliant. The new team progressing in their own way…

Whether it’s a way we like or not.

A lot of people have complained about the villains this season too. I’m good with it. We don’t need to have a horribly terrifying villain every season. We don’t need another Adrian Chase or Malcolm Merlyn. I liked and still like the idea of a group of semi-capable villains, regardless of whether or not the actor/actress is someone we/I can back, because I don’t think we’ve gotten to the bottom of it yet.

What I’m puzzled by the most however, is the reaction to the current arc; the way people are getting lost and angry and frantic by it.

Don’t you know Arrow by now?

Perspective:

(S1, a season of introduction, isn’t one we can use to discuss this so- nope!)

S2: there was a solid stream of episodes, all focusing on or around Sara Lance, Laurel and Quentin. Sara and her attempt to change so that she could exist in Oliver’s world. Sara’s attempt to fight off her own darkness and failing to do so, arguing about it with Oliver over and over again because of Roy, Slade and Helena. Sara and Laurel’s relationship. Sara and Oliver and Laurel’s history. Laurel realizing her bitterness was hurting her sister. Oliver letting go of any feelings he had for Laurel after his final attempt at caring, once again, ended up hurting him. Laurel and Quentin’s fight against their addictions – it went on and on and on until I thought my interest had gone dry...

S3: the 4 mind-numbing episode arc about LL becoming BC before uselessly being abandoned for another 5 episodes and the team’s morose attempt at fighting the good fight without their leader. Oliver thinking he can’t live, thinking he can’t have it all – that to trust his team, meant inviting darkness. And an extra 2 episodes where we had to watch Oliver make more bad choices and Felicity start a relationship with Ray, 3.10 to 3.15. That’s 6 episodes of UGH.

S4: Less episode arcs and more a general feeling. Oliver was put in the backseat in order to sell LL and Thea as members of the team. I know you all love Thea, but to me, she didn’t quite fit the team. The way her character progressed made this feeling worse. Then we had Oliver lying to the love of his life for 8 episodes. So, yeah. BAD.

S5: love it or hate it, season 5 had several stand alone episodes that made you nauseous. 5.13, 14, 15 were particularly crappy.

Any of you who thought they’d change this pattern for the sixth season, were fooling yourselves, I’m sorry to say. But S6, I think, has been one of the kinder seasons.

There’s no bad Olicity angst (the 6.08 angst was delicious). There’s no ridiculous attempt at selling a character to us. There’s no ‘I’m Oliver Queen which means I can’t have a life’ crapola…

The way the team split was handled has left much to be desired, I know that. It really has. I admit that I can’t love the new guys like I do OTA, but I did like them. Now I can’t stand them. They took every bad habit Oliver has EVER possessed, thrown them in his face and then utilized them x10 and made excuses for their behaviour… and then blamed Oliver once more.

But even with the crappy attitudes of the newbies and their horrifying lack of morality recently, each episode this season has been pretty on the ball.

I also know a lot of us don’t like BS.

In portraying LL or BS, KC seems to have a problem with grabbing the majority audience’s sympathy. Her villain role this year has been decidedly camp and over the top and, once again, her character is rooted in selfishness. No surprises there. And now, well, she’s using (going to use) LL’s identity to get what she wants. I hope Quentin is happy: he gave her the tools for this.

Anyone who wasn’t expecting this or for her to be in 6.15 a whole lot, were not paying attention.

She’s going to use the excuse of being kidnapped for a couple of years and assume LL’s identity. This is not the action of someone who wants redemption. This is the action of a mole. I always thought she’d try to play one side against the other for her own gain and I bet that she does.

She’ll also use her knowledge of the team as leverage: blackmailing Oliver and co so that they can’t prosecute her because she knows so much and, really, they can’t imprison her unless they want to unfairly blemish LL’s reputation, because she isn’t LL.

Happily, Oliver made it very clear that he a) doesn’t care about saving her, he’s looking after the city and b) pretty much doesn’t want to see her again. Everything else he did in 6.14 was rooted in his respect for Quentin. I know Quentin has officially flown over the cuckoo’s nest but after years of friendship etc, Oliver owes it to him. Even if he knows it’s not right. He’ll do it, just this once.

Saying it the way he did too, to never wanting to hear her name or see her face again… it’s like not expecting a child to do the exact opposite of what they’re told. Of course the writers would have her push back.

You know, she could have gone with Quentin. Instead, she’s decided to immerse herself in another woman’s life. When you’re looking for redemption, that’s kind of the last thing you do. She wants something. And she’s going to take it.

And you know what? This could be really good.

They’ve slanted away from a true redemption arc. It doesn’t mean she won’t end up there. But the likelihood of it being about true goodness is pouring away, fast. And it’s going to bite all of them on the ass.

You know, I state the obvious, if it was any other character/actress, we wouldn’t be having the same problem with this SL.

I don’t like LL/BS or KC. I have my reasons, which I won’t force on anyone and I know that if this were a different character/actress/actor, the ‘god, this again’ I’d feel and the outrage everyone else has displayed, wouldn’t be nearly so high.

This isn’t a plot-line to make people happy. It’s designed to both satisfy a trope (for her stans) and not repeat a character (for us, because enough with boring and predicable please) and to make us all freak out and get angry. We’ll be waiting for something to go wrong. They want us on tender hooks and you know what? It’s working.

The amount of hype the people who hate this arc have produced is more than the hype created by those who like it.

There’s goodness coming. There is.

But every year, a chunk of the fandom family start hating on the show with nearly the exact arguments as the years previous. I get it. I do.

But, you know what else happens every year? The slingshot.

Would I like Felicity and Oliver to hog the screen time, I sure would. It took years to get them married. Show us more for god sake! 

But it isn’t realistic. The show has more than one character and the design of it, though flawed, is one they haven’t changed. There are filler episodes and other things. We knew – we KNEW – that 6b (6.10 – 6.14/15) would have little to no Olicity (save some amazing moments, especially in 6.11) and yet there’s still surprise at this. 

We knew, after watching 6.12 that the newbies were wrong and would continue to be so. We knew that the BS arc would be a royal pain in the ass, but this latest twist is going to test the characters and maybe that’s a good thing.

First thing’s first though. Every single season, Felicity’s story goes like this:

We have a group of episodes surrounding her. Then she comes out of the main focus but is still very much part of the plot. She has brilliant moments that make the show great. Then, like a slingshot, roughly during episodes 16/17/18, she pops back into focus for the rest of the season.

Let’s look at past seasons again.

S2: between episode 1 and 5, she’s very much relevant but not the focus and then for 6 to 10, she was very focal. With Sara’s introduction and Roy’s, she’s secondary until roughly 2.19 up till the finale.

S3: episodes 1 and 2, she’s focal. 3 and 4 she’s not. 5, 7 and 9, she’s focal. 6, 8, she’s not. Then the BC arc and episode 14. Then slingshot round again.

I do think season 3 gave Felicity the most SL isn’t given ANY of the female characters in Arrow. Now, there are too many characters for this to work.

Still, it repeats, it repeats, it repeats. Same with season 4, same with season 5.

Would I like more married Olicity, HECK YES. But – and the way they’ve done it is more than a little skewed – they’re trying to make it look like Olicity are currently waylaid by all the drama. They literally don’t have enough time to be together. They’ve gone back to saving the city full time; just like in season 2 and 3 where they had to somehow handle saving the city alone with living their lives. Both Oliver and Felicity were unable to do so alone, from what I remember. Now we know there could be more scenes. They could give us a few moments at least (beyond the few brillo-pads ones we’ve had). But those scenes were sold to Rene and Curtis. Thankfully, there’ll be less of them in 6.15/17 etc.

As much as I don’t like it, we’ll get back to it.

And as much as I’d like to see more of Felicity’s SL, I’m going to leave any and all judgement on the lack of it since 6.07, until the end of the season. Safe to say, it’s been taken over by her break with Curtis. He did the unforgivable. She gave up her money to save Oliver. I believe we’ll get more, but there’s just too much going on.

Would I prefer to see that over the badly handled civil war crap? Yes. Of course I would. Would I prefer to see more married Olicity, more Felicity and Diggle over this BS bull? Yes, I would. But they got MARRIED. The show literally told the audience they were each other’s true loves and destined to be together. The writers actually allowed Oliver to get married. It means they probably think they can afford a few episodes of not giving us much in that department but again, it depends why you watch the show.

I’m also hoping the writers showed the B team to be assholes because they’ve got lessons to learn and forgiveness to earn, I really hope for that.

They’ve mentioned a honeymoon. The show only does that when they plan to deliver, whether it’s this season or the next. Either of them could end up in jail. If fan theory is correct, Oliver gets poisoned/drugged in 6.18, leaving her alone in 6.19.

My point is that, the show isn’t going stale just because of an arc that’s been handled in such a way. Or because of a character that we literally don’t care lives or dies. Or turns into a goat. Whatever.

It’s going to be fine…

In re to BS – Stephen, Emily, Juliana and KC mentioned things about her. KC’s words haven’t been accurate save for aforementioned extreme contention between BS and DD.

The only thing Stephen said about it was that it would be interesting if LL was actually walking around in the daylight the past couple of years. He said it was an interesting take. That was it. And I agree. I don’t like her, but I agree.

Emily mentioned there might still be a thing between Felicity and BS (another possible fight) and really, if BS pretending to be LL culminates in her facing off with Felicity then bring it on because my god, it’s a death wish waiting to happen! I’ll get the popcorn!

I was done with LL./BS/KC long ago but I’m choosing to see the little goodies in the crap because I love the show, even with its faults. It hasn’t gone stale guys. The newbies are idiots but they never used to be, so I’m waiting for the penny to drop for them. Let’s just ride it out, kay?

This season has given us so much, even if it hasn’t delivered on other things we’re waiting for, so I’ve decided to accentuate the positive. If a show pushes it, then they’ve earned the scorn. Arrow hasn’t pushed this season as far they’ve done in previous additions and we get the added luxury of Olicity being a pillar.

For now, I’m good.

i need to talk about home shit here

I don’t know if I’ve ever talked about it. I’m honestly embarrassed to talk about it and there’ll be some gaps bc my memory is just shit, but I need to fucking move out. When I cut out my toxic friend who manipulated me in such horrible fucking ways to the point where I was suicidal every fucking day, my sister started acting cold to me. Maybe it’s because that ex-”Friend” was/is close with my brother? Whatever. I cut her out because she’d tell me all of my brother’s secrets, things I didn’t want or need to know. She’d tell me that he was going to kill himself at least twice a week. Especially when my mom was in the hospital with a collapsed lung. Anyways, this isn’t about her. It’s about my sister and my home life.

My sister has always had a control on me. My whole family has, whether they were aware or not.  I was always seeking their approval so I would hide my true self from them and be the quiet, obedient little girl they thought I was. Which is why I’ve been so adamant about keeping my social media life from my family. Even now at 25, because they just don’t understand. I know my family checks my twitter. My mom has come to me, a 25 year old, cornered me in a room and demanded to know why I “want to be a boy” because I use he/they pronouns. Sigh. I had to explain to her the history of lesbians using the term he (and yes, she was taken back by me saying “lesbian” because she views it as a dirty word.) She commented on the fact that I swear. I don’t swear where any of my family can see it, I avoid it at all costs. Being threatened with soap in your mouth, being hit, etc every day if you swear isn’t...exactly encouraging.

So, anyways, the control. When I started breaking out from that and being myself, I started hanging out with my family less. Just because I wanted to do other things. I spend very little time with them now. It’s not worth it. After two minutes it turns into a yelling fest or my sister threatening me in some way with physical violence. She has a history of hitting me. That’s obvious. Siblings fight. But when one sibling is so very fucking clearly unable to defend themselves, is that still a fucking fair sibling fight? Not to me, it’s not.

I spend most of my time with my lovely, supportive girlfriend now. We’re on opposite sides of the country, but we’re always on call because I enjoy spending this time with them. My family, mainly my sister, thinks this means I hate my family. Oh, to surround yourself with people who actually fucking want you to be happy and live your life how you want to vs sitting with your family who constantly shits all over everything you do/are? Let’s not forget when I cut my hair short this past week, they all blew up over it saying it looked horrible on me and that they don’t know why I can’t just keep my hair long. Or when my sister threatened to out me to my very clearly homophobic sister and tell her I didn’t tell her because I “hate her” or some other childish shit.

This isn’t even the tip of the iceberg. I’ve had shit thrown at me, my sister has spit on me (yes, like legitimately her saliva), she’s punched me, she whacked the wall by my head with a hockey stick and cracked the outlet cover because I dared to plug my fucking phone charger into it. I can’t keep living here. I don’t even know where to start. I’m getting bad again and the only thing that keeps me sane and going is my girlfriend and our friends. I can’t even....leave leave because I don’t have my license (another thing No One will help me with) and I don’t have a car. Also, I’m afraid if I start a GoFundMe or something, my family will kick me out or shut down my phone/internet access. :) I’m scared.

It’s so close though, anon! We’ve just gotta wait and see what happens when it airs. What’s the point in worrying now?

Also like. I do think it’s important to remember the specific story they’re telling is Aaron and Robert’s, when you get down to the gritty of it. This is just the dramatic journey. We know they’re in love with one another, the show shows us that over and over in sometimes subtle, sometimes punch you over the nose obvious ways. They love each other. They just have to find their way back to each other. And preferably get a grip on their lives first and stop accidentally harming their teenage sister in the process 😂

They’re never going to do anything that pulls Robert and Aaron far away enough that they can’t come back from it (and indeed Robert and Liv and Aaron) - have just enough faith that you believe that, if nothing else. We know that’s the end goal. They’re writing all of this with that in mind. Even when they push the characters to keep it interesting and to keep momentum up, they know how far they can and can’t go - even Iain said as much. And it shows, because even while Robert is currently drugging an old dude, about to yell at a 15 year old girl and posing as a drug addict, he’s still somehow been shown in the most sympathetic light possible.

I actually think the amount of sympathy the writing has shown Robert so far is absurd - given that he’s a villainous character, they could take a lot less care with him if they wanted to and it would still be believable. And yet somehow we still have scenes of him falling apart about Aaron and the show continually highlighting where his recent insanity is coming from (something they never really used to do back in 2015 all that much).

This is all the stuff I think about, when I think about this show and what’s happening now. I like to just throw myself behind whatever’s happening and enjoy the ride and that’s easier to do when you know the gist of the destination, imo. So idk maybe this doesn’t help anyone, but it has always helped me.

Idk, what’s the worst that could happen? Realistically, with everything we know to be true. The episodes all suck? Well, then there’ll be better episodes down the line. Nothing is getting irreparably destroyed.

Aaron goes on a date? Well he’s marrying Robert next year so I have an inkling that won’t go all that well. We already know that this character is only being introduced to help move the plot along - because they decided to cut all the suspense and tell us that Robert and Aaron are getting back together. They haven’t even done that with coira, or dross. Like. If Coira and Dross are going to end up in a will they/won’t they, robron are in a when and how will they.

Aaron’s mean to Robert? I mean, firstly the last time he let Robert in his mh ended up in such a bad way that he ended up in hospital so… he’s gonna process things however he’s going to do that. Secondly, even if Aaron is threatening to kill Robert, I would very much like someone to come into my ask box and tell me that they genuinely believe Aaron would ever want Robert’s life to come to an end, in all seriousness.

(And if you genuinely believe that, I judge your tenuous grasp on Aaron Dingle’s character)

Idk how to say much more without having seen it. But. You know. I can’t get behind doubting Aaron’s love for Robert when the show is trying to make it clear to us that he’s still very much in love with him (even if he doesn’t want to be). It confuses me that people are able to watch the end of last week and come away with the conclusion of anything else. No offence to those people.

So. Anyway. All that being said, what’s there really to be scared of? Even if it does somehow go all horribly horribly wrong? More wrong than anything they’ve dished out to us since January? Even then? Well. They’ll fix it, dude. That’s the whole point. It will get to a point where it’s better. And they’re not going to push it out to a place where it can’t get better.

anxiety hasn’t kicked my ass about this yet so rambling about how a d&d campaign where you play as the ancients vs pariah could work

or a fate campaign. fate might work better.

Or pathfinder. I have all the pathfinder books- but I also have most of the D&D 5e books- and they have an official gunslinger class. I’ve just never done anything with pathfinder so I have like. half a clue how it works.

sticking with d&d for the moment bc most of my knowledge about fate comes from the good old mcelroys and they’re. not the best example.

okay so: I have the dp ghost race habato and I made a while ago, but it’s a bit... unbalanced. and I need to fix that. I think the idea I have for the dp ghosts would work better as a class, but that provides one of the same problems that I have with it as a race; there’s not enough diversity

a party of an elf ranger, dwarf cleric, tabaxi rogue, and dragonborn fighter is so much better than one of a phantom ranger/cleric/rogue/fighter or an elf + dwarf + tabaxi + dragonborn phantom set. everyone could multiclass, I guess, but having to decide whether to level up your ghost powers or your other skills is pretty :/ and why I went with it as a race originally.

also what does it have to offer as a class besides ghost powers?? those aren’t special. they’re kinda special. not special enough to be their own class.

maybe it could be an additional thing? like you’re a ranger but you’re ALSO a phantom!! it doesn’t give you any specific bonuses other than ghost powers and flight but it could be set up like a class still. you’d just level it up as you level up, instead of having to choose between that and your other skill set

main problem there is what I’m thinking of isn’t actually a thing and holy shit do I suck at explanations. if I homebrew an entirely new element on my own I’ll confuse the shit out of everyone

another option: it’s a feat. but then you don’t get to get stronger as you level up, which is. upsetting. that’s the fun part.

you could gain skills at certain points as you grow as a ghost? like ‘ah yes, you’re in danger, now you can fly!’ or maybe when you act on your obsession a certain number of times you go stronger--

but the ghosts in general. or phantoms as the race is called. what kind of powers should they have? thinking flight, and either what I have in the races where they get a power based on their core (inspired by the dragonborn’s breath weapon) or they could get a certain selection of spells they can cast a couple times a day? and the types of spells change depending on their core?

maybe it’s a choice. you can have the best of both worlds you just have to pick one when you level up- oh!! that’s what you can choose with the class option, instead of leveling up your stats you can level up a ghost power!!

races can be what kind of ghost you are, appearance-wise. like, ghostwriter’s an elf (drow? drow seem like they don’t go outside and so does he). Pariah’s either a goliath or a duergar (they can cast enlarge on themselves!!), danny’s a half elf. poor boy doesn’t even get to be human he’s still a halfa.

this also means that if you’re playing as a tabaxi you died and turned into a cat which is fucking hilarious. if you’re a kenku you’re a literal shitty bird person. you died and became a bird that can’t even speak normally. it’s great.

if you’re a gnome or halfling you died and shrunk.or you really liked the hobbit.

ideally you would like. have a race that reflects your death somehow. but I don’t super know what the plotline will be yet so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ maybe not that

I also think death wounds/stuff relating to that would be cool. like if someone rolls a natural 20 against you they hit the scars of the wound that killed you and it fucks you up. stuff related to your death also fucks you up. lots of stuff can fuck you up. blood blossoms can kick your ass.

we could also use this fantasy disabilities chart bc messing your character up is fun

obsessions are a thing too. Like, say your obsession is your family, and you learn that your brother’s a ghost- you’ve got to drop everything to go check in with your brother!! maybe wisdom save to do stuff that doesn’t get you closer to your target (once activated? by... some shit? it can’t always be on), and advantage on rolls directly involving it? idk. that might be too weird.

if something happens that shatters your obsession you either die or get royally fucked up. 

I like making things overtly complicated I guess meanwhile in my main campaign I keep forgetting how the barbarian’s rage works and fUCKING IT UP

idk how clerics would work, either. probably worship vague concepts? either that or there’s a cleric of clockwork and I bet he’d fucking love that.

also warlocks. same boat. someone could be a warlock of the observants and get true seeing at some point far too early on. that’d be a mess. I love it. I’d have to homebrew it.

Do you have any tips for new fic writers? I posted a fic and no one has really read it yet :(

Um, good question! I understand how that feels though, see: The Easy Winners lol. Overall I have been fairly successful across my different accounts though so I do have some tips & hopefully it helps. But I am blunt here, I’ve been writing fanfic for too long to pretend any of this isn’t true.

AO3 speaking, if this is your first fanfic in the fandom then it is going to push your fic back a few pages, and by that time no one will see it. You might just need to wait for the next update, unfortunately, to see whether there’ll be any success there.

The days matter. Pity on the writer who posts on Sunday nights when Of Bright Stars and Burning Hearts or any of the other popular fics update. Also, weekends get more posts than weekdays. When I posted Meet Me by the River on a Wednesday, it stayed on the front page for hours. You’re going to have to have some strategy here.

Hype it. I’m shameless, alright, I hype my fics. I give updates on my blog about my fic. When I post, I make a post for it on tumblr with a pretty banner and tag it from here to kingdom come, with #victuuriwriters as my first tag bc goodness knows it might help. I reblog it on a sideblog of mine that has almost 3k followers even though it’s unrelated content because it’s exposure, and if you have a somewhat successful blog too, why not? It helps. Hell, send it into victuurificrec, they take anonymous messages & you’ll be featured in that fic rec friday posting. You know how when writers publish a book they get a frickload of marketing? Book readings, signings, even commercials, the like? So reblog that link 100 times. Authors worked hard on their writing and so did you, you’re allowed to promote yourself. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. Be proud.

Speaking of hyping, setting a schedule helps. It gives your readers something to look forward to definitively instead of failing to notice when you give an update.

Also along hyping, sometimes giving sneak previews help. Like, posting an excerpt before the actual chapter. If readers see good writing right then and there, they might be more interested in the rest.

There’s just some stuff that the fandom prefers over other things. YoI is a happy fandom, people like happy stories with happy endings for most of it within fanfic. You’re going to feel like you have to cater to your readers. In a sense, you do. It sucks, my god does it suck. Ivan da Maria took a hit because it has that nice “major character death” tag and no one wants that. No one wants to look beyond that, because there’s the assumption of no happy ending right off that bat. And damn is this fandom thirsty for happy endings. Sometimes you kinda just have to accept that the subject isn’t popular within fandom and consider maybe moving on. I wish I could tell you something optimistic here, but it’s best just to acknowledge now that maybe your obscure history or w/e au isn’t going to get much interest from the fandom. Try and gauge what it does want.

This has only happened to me in this one case, but piggybacking on something else works oddly well. Let’s be real, Meet Me by the River probably wouldn’t have gotten so much attention without my Russian crash course reeling me in attention beforehand. And then, I somehow got hyped by 2 well-known people in fandom. It’s really unfair and for me it was pretty much plain luck that everything aligned like this, but piggybacking on something (or someone) else works.

Try and get it beta’d, because if they’re good and honest, they’ll tell you beforehand whether a chapter is exciting or not. Also, I guess being beta’d is supposed to be the prestigious trend now.

The I Know When I Need to Save Myself  Tactic: or in standard English, if you put all your effort into some fic week after week and it has little popularity, that one motivator for fanfic (bc goodness knows we’re not paid for this or anything, hits/kudos is all we get), sometimes you need to put it down before it hurts you more. Sometimes, it’s just time to move on, if you find the kudos count more disheartening than your story can uplift you. You think I put that “if this gets good reception I’ll continue this story” note lightly in MMbtR? I still agonize over it because it can come off as manipulative. But as someone who’s been in the fanfic game for 6 years, I know to have some respect for myself, sometimes even over how much I love the story sadly enough, and I make that clear. Thank you for reading, but if my work matters to no one, I have more productive things to do with my time. It sounds bad directly, but for goodness sake save your mental health. Have a decent amount of respect for yourself and your work. I’m really not trying to be mean/negative, I want the best for you.

I’m sorry I can’t give you more, that there isn’t some easy to follow algorithm for this. Sometimes fic popularity is just dumb luck, I wish I was kidding. I’ll try and help you in any other way I can, new writers deserve a chance. I wish you more luck in your hits/kudos, Nonny, seriously. Don’t quit writing over this (goodness knows I’ve seen a lot of good writers quit because of this exact problem), but do remember:  fanfic your mental health.

ADHFSJDFH hi again!! sorry that it’s taken me a while to respond; i’ve been really busy with moving and everything the past few days, but i really wanted to answer this before the finale bc i have Many Fears asngjsjdjbvhdsbfvhbsa

under a cut again bc this is rambling and probably incoherent, but let’s go!!

my first thought is that i LOVED the episode. from the animation to the storytelling to the voice acting that made me cry...this was an absolute highlight of an episode. they packed SO MUCH into like 20 minutes and i have so much love for everyone who works on this show i just can’t, it’s so good!! 

also i feel like i conveyed this in my last rant, but i think lilith is such a well-written character, and not to be That Bitch, but the fact that the majority of the fandom really just full on lost their minds on her is literally kind of hilarious. like...i am a female villain stan first and a human second. i am simply vibing ashvhbdfhvbhdb.

i feel like a lot of people have said this better than i could at this point, but i think there’s be a redemption arc coming. most of eda and lilith’s interactions prior to 1x18 really played up the love that still exists beneath the tension. the sisters still clearly love each other, but obviously so much has happened between them that they could never have had any kind of true resolution without the secret of the curse coming out. lilith’s been carrying her guilt for years and at least with it out in the open, they can maybe start to reconcile. (obviously this would need to be a very long process, and even if lilith is working hard for it, eda (and luz!) aren’t under any obligation to forgive her for anything) (also full disclosure: i’m a lil bit biased on the sister thing bc my current original project has a sister set in a similar situation with similar vibes to lilith and eda (coincidentally, i swear!), and i know i’m writing them a fitting reconciliation, so i’m hoping the show will give me the same lol)

as for my thoughts moving into the finale, i’m predicting that lilith is going to realize that the emperor has been lying to her the whole time, and that she’ll make some kind of big sacrifice so that eda and luz can escape, whether it’s her position or her magic (or her life, but i really don’t think they’re going to go that way) and she’s going to have to figure out who she is without the emperor controlling her. (okay, random thought that i literally JUST had typing this out: what if she loses her magic and has to start learning with glyphs like luz or something like that?? i have 0 evidence to support that, but it’s just a thought i guess) 

also, i don’t really have thoughts about this stuff, but i’m a fan of the ‘lilith is also cursed’ theory, even if it’s just a side effect of casting such a powerful curse or something like that. i’m not into the idea of belos being their dad (i’m still lukewarm on him being related to luz though. if the whole ‘camilia is azura’ theory pans out, maybe he’s camilia’s father and luz’s grandfather or something? idk, but i’m interested in how it’ll play out! i don’t think belos will be dying in this ep, so i think there’ll be a lot to unpack there next season. also just everything related to the palismen, and in particular owlbert vs lilith’s raven. give me more palisman lore immediately!!

went to see a rlly sad play today: people, places and things

it wasn’t the best thing i’ve ever seen in my life but at one point the main character talked abt feeling like she couldn’t take herself srsly enough to prioritize her own happiness / it was also abt acting and playing parts and they rlly made me think abt who we are etc, all that deep stuff that’s been thought abt so many times it’s like dirty laundry that u can never wash haha

but anyway i believe in intrinsic value, maybe bc i have to and i realized that or maybe bc idk whether i believe in god or not (probably not) but i need sth to hold on to, who knows

it was good not to be in lessons though and i got enough sleep last night and i caught up on work / i made a slightly depressing post on my priv ytd and **** asked me if i was ok during break today and i felt rlly bad and tried to explain that i don’t want ppl not to think i’m ok but then i felt stupid bc there’s no possible explanation for making that post aside from being ridiculously self-absorbed

i was talking to **** the other day abt how i found out that there are 2 types of ppl, selfish or altruistic and that you can be on the spectrum but there is no sitting on the fence and there IS a turn-over point / and how i know some ppl (...) who r so inherently selfish even when caring abt other ppl that they can never let go of themselves or prioritize anyone else and it’s rlly sad bc they end up treating the ppl that love them like shit (it shouldn’t be THAT sad bc the ppl who love her only love her bc they’re family, it’s like obligatory love. i technically hate her. i mean there’s probably people who do love her as a person but i cannot understand them. how can you love somebody who will never treat you like they love you more than they love themselves. and yet there is the ugly truth? about me? why do i need somebody to love me more than they love themselves? do i love anyone more than i love myself? yes... sometimes. i think i have the potential to, but then again i always say that potential is not enough sooo)

but back to what i told ****, i think i’m inherently selfish as well even though i would often pick other ppl over myself / even so i always feel sorry for myself, am aware of my own presence in situations and can’t get rid of the idea that i don’t like the shape of my presence, it’s awkward, always too big and attention-seeking and i thought i learned to let it bother me less but i think now it bothers me more and more

and i keep thinking about university and how i can’t wait to be around a bunch of people who don’t know me so i don’t have to speak to them and ruin everything / but also i wonder if i’ll just speak anyway and say too much all over again and then ppl will know me for who i am (but it’s strange to be an ambivert or whatever bc i feel sort of like an empty shell, like what i tell everyone is what i THINK i feel but what i actually feel is so different that i can’t put it into any sort of coherent sentence. i just want ppl to be happy though, i do know that. i’m kind of scared in a weird and incomprehensible way that if i stay here much longer, which i will for a while until i leave school, everyone will know too many things abt me which i thought were true when they found them out, but which might not be true now or might never have been true. and then there’ll be a bunch of ppl out there who know things abt me that i don’t want to be known, either because i don’t like them or because they are not true. and will i get rid of this persona that i’ve created for myself while i was too busy being tired/angry/sad/scared? aaaaa)

this morning i saw mr ***** walking his kids to school again and we waved at each other, it makes me feel so happy when i see people who have lives with shape and a sort of purpose (not in a dramatic way, as in: i like looking into people’s houses when u can see through the windows because it’s dark and seeing their rooms and people sitting at their desks, because my life here doesn’t often have shape. only when i’m on the beanbags with **** and *** watching tokyo ghoul or a movie or when i’m drinking shhh with **** and **** and *** or when i’m walking around town with **** or generally when we’re sitting in a place that isn’t as in-betweeny or scent-less as a boarding house) and i also love seeing children bc i think being a child is so weird and free and i wish i’d been less dramatic about having nothing to do when i was a kid. i also wish i’d been less of a perfectionist and enjoyed what i had while i still had it (time, mostly. i had SO much time). mr ***** has a dog and he talks to his children but they never say anything back. the other day he said something to me in passing and touched my arm and it was so friendly and it honestly made my day so much better...why? i think i need to be around new people, really badly. even being with ***** was like breathing fresh air after being inside all day. it was also that, of course, since i was outside properly for the first time in ages. 

anyway, i feel a little bit better now but i shouldn’t procrastinate or everything will go to shit again! now i’ll try to do a load of work :/
