the thing about black sails & my love for it is that so much of my fondness of it is also tied to the experience of watching it when it came out, along with the at the time absolutely tiny fandom, & i just cannot replicate that feeling, so i've never actually sat down to rewatch it & idk when i ever will.

like i remember getting into it at the end of season 1 & being one of like 10 ppl actually talking about it & making edits, organizing events, etc & i've never had that experience with any other fandom. i experienced the show & fandom so viscerally for better & for worse & i miss it dearly, but i also never want to do it again.

If you're still doing the opinions thing. What are your thoughts on the take that Sam is just as bad as or even worse than Dean in terms of how possessive they are over each other?

~~Not my personal opinion, just a comparison I saw on a wincest blog that I didn't agree with~~

total garbage. also unfortunately a very common bad take. the narrative likes to go “heehee hoohoo they are just as bad as one another” in the late seasons based on Extremely Questionable or even outright fabricated evidence and I love that the fans who are predisposed to this view of the brothers eat it the fuck up even tho it’s full of giant holes.

s10 is the most egregious example of this. not gonna get into it in depth rn bc it’s tiring but truly just grit your teeth and rewatch s10 while paying attention to what dean is telling the audience about sam and think about whether you actually believe him based on what we’ve seen sam do in s10 and previous seasons. there could not be a more screamingly obvious red flag than dean describing sam working with charlie on a cure for the mark of cain as “when you bullied charlie into getting herself killed.”

I diverted this away from “possessiveness” and into general Harmful Behavior bc it is their overall patterns of behavior that the narrative itself is dishonest about to the viewer. but to be extra clear - there is no world in which sam could be equally or more “possessive” over dean than dean is over sam because sam is not entitled to dean’s body and dean’s life in the way that dean is to sam’s. and furthermore, because sam is so accustomed to having his power of choice stripped away while being told that it’s what’s Best For Him, when he has the option of enforcing another character’s right to choose (usually a child or a woman or other vulnerable person) he almost always makes a point of explaining to them that the choice is theirs. see his interactions with jesse (s5), claire, and jack for very clear examples of this.

my personal favorite parallel however is what dean did to sam with the panic room in s4 vs dean’s comparatively brief and non-dehumanizing experience with the panic room when he was first on the verge of saying yes to michael in s5. samndean’s conversations in “point of no return” are so crucial to understanding their series-spanning power imbalance. like come on. dean’s “I’d let you rot in here. hell, I have let you rot in here.” followed by sam’s “I guess I’m not that smart.”

shouldn’t need to spell it out any clearer than that!!!!

the sad thing about s4 and THAT is for as much of it is OOC af and a complete character assassination to both characters i can see how its SOMEWHAT ic for Five. on a level where "IF THIS PLOT WAS ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE, IT BE MORE IC"

i would have LOVED a story for five full of - hopelessness selfishness being so tired of it all (WITCH THEY DID IC IN S3. I LOVE 'i don't give a FUCK anymore' s3 five)

fearing the worst and having to decide his own comfort or the lifes of his family. people can go "HE WOULD NEVER" to allll of it but i truly think he would second guess his own family or his comfort. we have to accept that five isn't a hero and is rather egotistical and very much cares more about HIS WAY then any others way. in s3, he uses soft voice, false supportive fear tactics on viktor, man like, people really need to stop seeing him as this goodie good, hes not and i would have LOVED TO SEE THIS DONE IN ANY OTHER WAY THAT WASN'T THAT.

like for as much as he loves his family, god does he do some SHIT to his family like - can we say that without nulling the love he has? hes a garbage boy AND a not horrid brother. he can still be a lil shit to his family well still loving them. its when the shit OVERLAPS the love. five was a balance between leaving diego in that ward, butting heads with viktor and not listening to luther bc of the psychosis and kicking him the nuts WELL STILL risking his morals and sanity to save them almost every time.

S5E8 "The Roast" thoughts:

Ok, I watched this episode three times and I'm still smiling. I love when you think and episode is gonna be about something because of its title and then surprise you when its all a misdirection (see also: Succession's "Connor's Wedding").

At first Laszlo's err… state intrigued me, love everyone projecting and imposing their own insecurities (Guillermo's secret, Nadja's hex) as a reason on why he is behaving like that. And of course it's a stupid reason 😭.

"And a flat pepsi for Guillermo". Oh Nandor, that's the worst thing you ever done to Guillermo, that's the worst thing you could do to anyone. And yes, I remember a certain S4 episode.

I screeched like a bird when Colin mentioned dreaming about being a baby under Laszlo's care, not only because I wanted this shit to happen since the past finale, but also I really thought the episode was going on that direction (and also bc its another W for my predictions).

Having said that, LOVED the nonchalance of Nadja and the others when they were like 'no, it wasn't a dream, that totally happened'.

I mentioned it in a separate post: they really had a Sweet Dee in IASIP moment when The Guide gave the roast idea, only to be ignored and then the same idea being stolen by a dude who is celebrated.

Seanie's poor brain it should be soup at this point, we don't know if he can hazily remember the event like it happened before.

What can I remember is his line after Nadja's roast because it was one of the biggest laughs for me: "Women CAN be funny!" I fucking loved it so much, it's the perfect condescending shit straight men say all the time, even when they're trying to be complementary to you they can't stop being garbage. It was a simple line but Anthony nailed the delivery and timing. Seriously, rewatch that part.

At first I was confused why all the jokes were so mid, but shortly I realized this episode wasn't about the roast at all, lol.

Just by watching screenshots of other users I noticed that in the scene of Nandor resting his head on Guillermo's shoulder there's a BIG flame between them. LMAO. There's no way that is unintentional.

Good for The Guide being the catalyst of Baron Afanas learning the truth. I was demanding more screen time for her lately, so having some incidence in the main plot goes on the plus column.

The other guests present at the roast being shocked at the knowledge of Guillermo killing vampires surprised me; I always assumed Guillermo being a familiar/slayer was a known fact in the vampire community after his very public massacre at the Théâtre des Vampires.

Fuck yeah when I realized this is a Doug Jones spotlight episode, I just fuckin ahgdjkaksdf, love him, perfect, no notes.

The Baron being terrifying!! Guillermo was seriously scared for the others and he barely tried to show off his Van Helsing abilities.

Nandor and Nadja begging the Baron to not hurt Guillermo!! 😭 Them being dragged while grabbing the cape!! 😭 They're spiritual siblings to me!! 😭😭

I wish I can say something more serious about Baron Afanas' sadness over how boring his life is now. But I just keep thinking that the way he talks about his homelife with The Sire and the Hellhound sounds exactly when a dude has a middle life crisis and suddenly he doesn't enjoy his marriage anymore. They're husbands!! And I loved how cunty he looked at the end all half-charred (see posted gif) Queen!

Now, the Nandermo of it all: What more can I say than incoherent screaming and foaming from the mouth? Episodes 8 are all about them again!! Nandor on the window looking all cliched melancholic heroine of a romance novel?? How relieved he was when he found him in the coffin??? Him still remembering Guillermo's card word for word???!! Knowing that this toxic dark sided devotion goes both ways???!!! Borrowing the words of Fleabag: THIS IS A LOVE STORY.

Seriously, I know all these soft Nandor moments are here so the heartbreak when he learns about Guillermo being turned it's even bigger. But still denying that there is a romantic undertone between these two it's just being purposely adamant at this point (i'm looking at you wwdits reddit). Even if nothing explicitly romantic happens on screen, just by watching these moments, I know, we know.

Now, go listen to the ending song again. You will not regret it.

this hot take is directed at nbc specifically: the fact that good girls was canceled without a formal, planned ending. it's been how many years, and i'm still upset?!! i desperately needed to see annie go to school to become an emt. they threw away such a juicy potential storyline! not a hot take, but: annie deserved better.

the music choices in s3 were garbage, save for a few songs

s3 in general was garbage, s1-2 were supreme, and s4 redeemed itself enough that i enjoyed it overall

i didn't like the introduction of nick's character at all. it really skews how i see rio in the early seasons. i just find it v hard to believe his strings were being pulled by his brother-cousin or whatever the f*ck they kept calling each other. didn't work for me. see also: phoebe and the 'secret service' HARD PASS ON THEM ALL

i didn't *hate* two of the scenes that a significant portion of the fandom felt were controversial/unnecessary at the time (rio getting shot at the end of s2 and the wire strip down scene in s4). sure there were some problematic elements to both, but i took the scenes with a grain of salt each, i guess.

to answer your second question, i never thought rio had a long term gf, and tbh it's news to me that that's a headcannon! i think he had a kid with a woman (with whom he was maybe serious with at one point) and they were co-parenting as best as they could given his... line of work lol. forever team brio, though i never *really* saw them as an endgame ~couple~. i more so envisioned them keeping up a crime colleagues with benefits-type relationship. y'know, the occasional bathroom hookup or mid-bbq fingering or car-smashing foreplay. as crime hubs/wives do.

Unpopular takes, idk if they are super unpopular tho.

Hopper should have stayed dead, the entire Russian plotline was stupid and did nothing.

S3 is the worst season plot wise, they shouldn't have introduced the Russians as the big bad, but should have continued with the American government being the villain. Plus Kali should have been there as well so they could have introduced Vecna sooner. (With Kali being by his side, serving as Kas who then betrays him because she realizes he manipulated her.)

Also Vecna being the main villain instead of the the Mindflayer was stupid.

S2 Jancy plotline was stupid as well and did nothing really for Nancy's character or the overall plot.

I don't like Byler endgame because it's too messy. If it's handled like the jancy/stancy triangle it's gonna be garbage.

Hopper and Ted are the same kinda person when it comes to parenting. Though I would prefer Ted over Hopper's aggressiveness. (That being said the only good father figures are Charles Sinclair and Bob)

Jonathan should have had Eddie's role in s4, it would have made more sense for the town to hunt him down. (Also the Hawkins gang acted like the town was crazy for thinking Eddie was the killer, when Chrissy's body was found in his trailer. The whole satanic panic plot felt flat because of this)

Overall people should have more negative feelings towards each other (esp within the teen group) instead of being instant besties.

The show is not that deep with metaphors, not everything is a parallel (I'm looking at the insane shippers that make everything about their ship)

And lastly, the show suffers the most from having too much plot and not enough time to execute everything well. We need more eps so character can breathe and grow (probably not an unpopular opinion)

I wish I could grab all tv developers by their shoulders and tell them that you can make an amazing, plot heavy, character driven show in 20+ episode seasons (Lost, This is Us, Heroes, etc.)

saw something where someone claimed jonathan has never come up with a plan independently. yeah he's been passive the past few seasons and the amount of time he spends standing around is ridiculous (though that's prolly due to the writing). but i wonder if i'm watching the same show as others when they claim he's never made plans of his own.

I’m not sure if we’re talking abt the same post (I saw one though) but they didn’t take into acct at all how the writers have treated him like garbage, made him passive, and sidelined him. When the writers actually wrote him in s1 he was his own character full of all kinds of active ideas and plans (going to Lonnie’s to look for Will, making and posting flyers and trying to help Joyce at home, looking for the monster, setting fire to his house to trap it lol) which def also made him an active mystery partner with Nancy. The writers have ignored him and made him a lot less active and that’s annoyed me given his original character writing. They’ve sometimes made him participate in plots he’s reluctant to participate in or basically made him the driver. But he’s also had subtle moments the audience just ignores like his instinct that something was wrong at home during the road trip in s2, recognizing there was something wrong with the rat in s3, coming up with the whole plan to leave for Hawkins in s4 and get away from the agents watching over them.

But yeah any take that says he’s a lesser character bc he has no ideas when he’s been sidelined so badly? Who totally ignores his characterization in s1 and doesn’t care that the writers minimized him? That can’t pay attention to his subtle moments? Yeah that’s a p bad take lol.

I don’t Greg hates Shiv at all to be honest. I think he likes Ken and Con and has neutral feelings toward Roman and Shiv. The latter two are pretty rude to him but he still tries to engage with them. They’re just cousins

well when we look at "like" in the context of the show it's really important because as shiv said "i love you but i cannot fucking stomach you" and i think that's a sentiment which applies to Most of the relationships in the show. wrt ken there are multiple factors regarding how greg feels towards him like. the reason he goes to ken so much is because ken is the only one of them who showed him any decency like, con did as well but con is not really considered a major player. he likes con well enough i agree but when it comes to ken it's much more complicated than he likes him, tbh. but he's the one he comes to most bc ken is the only one who gives him any kind of day lol [when he feels like it.] and i mean he was pretty fucking peeved when ken gaslit him and fucked him around about burning him and called him a parasite lol. that hurt. i think greg wants to like ken, but actually likes him? i dunno.

it seems like by s4 greg doesn't really like roman and why would he, rome has never done him any favours lol, he treats him like garbage just like pretty much everybody. they rebuff his advancements. and mostly he wants to talk to him as a part of the group of siblings because of information OR to try and connect with them because that's the thing about greg, he wants desperately to like his family and for them to like him, but the tragedy is that is just not the case. they treat him like shit and then expect him to do things for him like. why would he like any of them tbh. it's more of a sort of desperation to be part of the group, to be included, to be a member of a family, to have connection. tom can see this in him and that's why he uses the word family to coax him, because he knows it works. the difference is tom actually did look after and help greg as much as he could whereas the others told him to get fucked OR in ken's case, helped him when it suited them and then forgot about it or fucked him over later.

i think the only person greg actually likes is tom. he wants to like his grandpa as well but he cannot stomach him and like that is completely understandable bc ewan is a shitty old bitch. he loves his grandfather, he can't help it, but he doesn't like him. who would lmfao. like... the thing is it even comes to like, human feeling as well. who would you end up actually liking, someone who yeah okay treated you kind of shitty and pushed you around and had a lot of anger and took it out on you but took care of you when you were all alone in the bigwig world for the first fucking time, dropped in the middle of all this shit, self sacrificed twice just because you ask when you know the others would do jack shit for you even if you begged on your knees, or people who don't give a fuck about you unless it suits them and then turn around and tell you to get fucked? it's kinda psychology as well.

aaaand when it comes down to shiv, i don't think you would smash the bottle in the face of somebody you were even neutral towards, tbh lol. i know the show deadass had them just talking normally at the funeral but that's an issue i feel that's very prevalent in s4 like, there's no fallout because of time constraints i guess? or because they wanted to focus more solely on the siblings and the side charas got shunted to the side slightly. i also don't think you would say "you wanna strategise? you wanna fry her ass up?" about someone you were neutral towards, lmao. so i do think there's a bit of dislike towards shiv there specifically. he doesn't like her being mean to tom! and that like. makes sense? i think most of us would actively dislike somebody if they were hurting our best friend physically, mentally and emotionally. even if you look at it from a platonic pov [lol] greg is defensive of his closest [and only] friend.

Why do you think s4 might not go forward? Is it bc of the backlash? The low ratings of se? The strike? Or something else happened? I'm not even watching the last 3 episodes of it means s4 will be canceled.My hope is that at best it will get 4 episodes and that's it. Like the rats spin off that was supposed to be a mini series and film for 6 months but the filming was wrapped in just two months. Lol. I hope twn burns and be forgotten and LHS never get another series in her hands.

lol basically everything you just said... i think backlash and the negative reviews. unfortunately we don't really know how ratings have been impacted because netflix isn't in the habit of releasing that data. but we all know they've cancelled better shows for far less, so we'll see. i hate to see it crash and burn like this because i absolutely love season 1 - i think it was genuinely on par with an HBO level production in many many ways including storytelling, cinematography, music etc. it took an absolute dive into the gutter with season 2, and by season 3 it's apparent that netflix is just shoving their usual garbage down our throats. it's really a shame and i cannot blame henry at all for leaving. they should have done whatever they could to get him to stay. instead he's being unceremoniously replaced and no one is going to buy into it. soooooooooo. idk. we shall see
