The typically toasty Sun Belt has been anything but warm this week, as some unusual weather is gripping the southern United States. The New Orleans area saw up to 10 inches of snow, alligators are freezing–but staying alive–in lakes in Southeast Texas, and turtle patrols in Florida are rescuing cold-stunned turtles.

Three endangered green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) found in Pensacola Beach, Florida are heading to Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park in Fort Walton Beach. A member of the Escambia Turtle Patrol found a turtle named Arugla on Wednesday, January 22. By Thursday, volunteers with Gulf Coast Turtle Watch reported two more juvenile green turtles walking along the shore.

“When the Sound water drops below 50 these turtles start to struggle and become lethargic, causing them to freeze to death. They will then just float into shore,” Gulf Coast Turtle Watch wrote on Facebook. “Our current Soundside water was reading this morning at 47. All turtles have been safely, responded to and transported to the Gulfarium in Fort Walton Beach by our permitted volunteers.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission also reported that two of its officers rescued 30 sea turtles on Thursday and urged anyone who sees a distressed turtle to call 888-404-FWCC (3922).

According to NOAA, cold-stunning is a condition where sea turtles become very weak or inactive after being exposed to cold temperatures. A similar phenomenon is seen in iguanas. These terrestrial reptiles can fall from trees after being cold-stunned during cold snaps.

Since sea turtles and iguanas are reptiles, they are not able to strictly regulate their body temperature the way that birds and mammals can. The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) does have a few physiological adaptations that come closest to this kind of thermoregulation. For other turtle species, body temperature is closely related to their environment, so they will seek out warmer waters during the winter. Turtles will typically swim away from shore to deep water or head south.

Recently, cold-stunning events have happened in several locations, including Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts, Long Island Sound in New York, Pamlico Sound in North Carolina, and various bays in Texas.

When cold-stunned, turtles will become lethargic and eventually are unable to swim. They then float at the surface and wind and/or tides can wash them ashore. If it stays cold enough and the turtles are not rescued, they can develop secondary health problems–including fungal and bacterial infections–and die.

Cold-stunned sea turtles will often need help from humans in order to recover. They may briefly stay in captivity until waters warm or be brought to a warmer location for release. In some cases, severely affected turtles can require veterinary care and rehabilitation before they can be released back into the wild. In November 2024, a team from the New Orleans’ Audubon Aquarium released a formerly cold-stunned critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) named Cilantro into the Gulf of Mexico after nearly two years of rehabilitation.

Anyone who sees a turtle in distress is encouraged to contact their local NOAA stranding network so that trained responders can help.

Vernon Anderson is the perpetrator of the St. James Academy shooting in Thunder Bay, Canada. He killed 22, and injured 30+ more.  (All characters, school, and events are fictional - except for mentioned city thunder bay and the oka crisis)

He stole his father’s rifles; who was passed out after a long night of drinking and gambling. He shot at a city bus, shattering its windows. He held the occupants hostage while he forced the driver to drive him to the Academy. No one was harmed on the bus, and he left the bus when they arrived there. The driver called the police. 

There he began shooting, killing twenty-two people, injuring around thirty more. He spared only Caucasians and Indigenous people, letting them safely exit the school grounds, and his victims were of Black and South Asian descent. He called his mother on his iPhone, telling her he already killed people at the school, and that the police are already on school grounds. His mother begged him to surrender. He told her he loved her and hung up, shooting himself afterwards. He did not survive. 

He was born sometime in 2005 to a Caucasian father and an Indigenous mother (mentioning his parents’ races will make sense as you further read his bio); he has two older siblings, a brother and a sister. His parents divorced when he was a small child. He bounced between both parents homes growing up; in his father’s apartment in Thunder Bay and on his mother’s First Nations reserve. At the time of the shooting he lived with his father. 

As a baby he was given an Indian name by Elders, “he who falls with the broken stars,” perhaps a premonition for his short life and the massacre he would later carry out.

Like the typical mass shooter, he was very anti-social, a loner, he didn’t have many friends nor a steady girlfriend. Typically, he had a hatred for humanity.

He was a white/Indigenous supremacist; his beliefs included deporting everyone in Turtle Island except Caucasians and Indigenous people. He especially hated “certain” people. He spent a lot of his time online, using sock puppet accounts to express his bigoted views and harass others. 

To others in his life, he appeared as a quiet, calm boy, but at home or in private, he had an explosive temper, prone to violent outbursts. Neighbours would hear the boy and his father having heated arguments. 

He was a former student at the Academy. In school he was an outcast. He had a few small incidents with other students. He was an average student, although he excelled at history. 

Despite his hatred of humankind, he had a strong love for his mother and his grandmother. 

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE:

He was a tall, pale boy with short brown hair and grey eyes that looked blue. 

His ‘school shooter outfit’ was inspired by the Mohawk warriors of the 1992 Oka Crisis. A green military uniform with a matching boonie hat and bandana covering his face. He wore sunglasses and a feather in his hair. 

After his death, it was discovered that throwing knives were hidden in a compartment in his combat boots. It is unknown if he planned to use them at one point during the massacre or not.

An idea I once had for a version of TMNT is for a young adult-aged April meeting the Turtles per usual, and after about, a season, season and a half of pure adventures, during a Halloween episode, the Turtles mention that when they were kids, Splinter would take them topside on Halloween because it was the one time a year people would just think they were in costumes. Cue April suddenly remembering: She met them once on a Halloween when Mikey got separated from the others and she helped him find his brothers (for the sake of a timeline, let's say Mikey was 5, Raph and Donnie were 6, Leo was 7, and April was 12 at this point, and in the present, they're 15, 16, 17 and 22, respectively) in a flashback adventure.

The boys realize this too, and Splinter makes a wry but sweet comment about fate working in subtle ways, but friends always finding each other.

Partially inspired by 03's All Hallows Thieves, and mayyyyybe just a dash of Bay April having owned them pre-mutation, but not much.

3.) What was your first impression of [TMNT iteration]? oooo bayverse? i was in love from the moment the turtles first appeared. i have terrible taste in movies, and it was right up my alley. and sam told me that bay mikey was exactly my type and they were right

Which version of Raphael is your favorite? asking the tough questions here. man. um. i. i don't think i can choose. i love that rise raph isn't afraid to be soft and how he's enthusiastically supportive. i love bay raph for his stupid one-liners and jokes and the way he does everything to protect his family. i love 07 raph for his feralness and how he stands up for what he believes no matter what. and the leather. they're all amazing in their own ways.

22.) What is your favorite kind of pizza? i'm boring, i like cheese. or a margherita pizza. i am fond of italian sausage though.

Mikey hummed. “Weeelll… in one reality she was a teenager like us and Donnie got this huge crush on her. Raph too, but it faded. Donnie just kept being awkward for, like, three years.”

“Oooff. Ouch. Not your Donnie right?”

“Nah. Though me, I felt a little crush. Okay, a huge crush. Maybe Don did too, but now they’re just best friends. Nerds.”

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora’s release date has been confirmed

Revealed during Ubisoft Forward, the game based on the James Cameron Avatar franchise will release on December 7.

A trailer shown off during Ubisoft Forward showed a Na’Vi using rifles and other human weaponry. It also gave a brief glimpse at the open world of Pandora. The game will see the player fighting against another invading human threat.

Embracer announces "comprehensive restructuring program" to close studios, cut jobs

Embracer has announced a "comprehensive restructuring program" which will result in studio closures, project cancellations and job losses.

The Swedish umbrella company has grown enormously through acquisitions over the past five years, and now owns a swathe of studios such as Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics, Borderlands maker Gearbox, rights to franchises such as The Lord of the Rings, and an array of other publishers such as Plaion, Saber and THQ Nordic.

But while amassing its empire, Embracer is yet to see a big return. Last year's big bet, its Saints Row reboot, was a critical and commercial failure. More recently, the company suffered a body blow when a major unannounced $2bn deal fell through, prompting its shares to plummet by an eye-watering 40 percent.

Today's reckoning seeks to make Embracer a "leaner, stronger and a more focused, self-sufficient company", the company's boss Lars Wingefors wrote in an open letter published this morning.

BIOGRAPHY:

Claire Anderson couldn't remember a time when her parents were married. But that didn't mean her childhood was filled with them fighting or her and her brother being shuffled around. In fact, there weren't many fights that she could remember, though the fact that he died when she was so young might have helped shape those memories.

Claire and Henry were extremely close growing up, basically having her older brother wrapped around her finger since the first time she smiled at him. Not that she tried to exclude her sister on purpose, and she was sure that it led to some middle child resentment towards her at least. But Henry allowed her to fully explore the world without any real consequences, always taking the blame when there was one. It definitely helped enable a bit of a sneaky, reckless side to her that continued into adulthood.

Her family is still the most important thing to her. After declaring that she needed independence and moving out of her mothers house, she quickly moved into her brother's house. She had hated living alone and had barely lasted a week. She works at The Waterfront, helping out her mom and has recently been wondering If maybe she wasn't the only one with secrets. Her biggest being that her job at The Waterfront isn't her only one. After helping her mom close she spends most of her night dancing at Whispers Gentleman Club. She isn't sure how her family would react if they knew, but the secret is half of the allure.

Thursday, August 22 - Aloutau, Papua New Guinea

Today was our first day in Papua New Guinea and our weather was definitely mixed - sudden downpours and then a bit of sun, followed by more rain and sun. Aloutau was not on our original schedule, but we needed to come here to pass immigration, and we also had a tour. Because this part of Papua New Guinea (PNG from here on) is a mixture of locals and hill people, many of them young and unemployed, we were told not to venture out on our own, so anyone who wanted to leave the ship pretty much went on the included tour.

With on and off rain, we first drove to a high point to overlook the bay, and then drove back down to the market in our many small vans. A few had air conditioning, but most of the vans were fresh air only. The market was next to the bus station, which consistently of several covered walkways where other small mini-buses provided the transportation to places near and far. The signs around warned people about not spitting betel nut juice, and various other infringements.

The market itself has several sections - we walked past lots of wonderful looking produce, as well as a whole sector selling peanuts. The prices were very reasonable - one Kina (local currency) is worth about 26 cents, so many things were under a dollar for a bunch of bananas, or some chard or cabbage. There were lots of baskets for sale, and unlike in many countries we have been, single use plastic bags were not in evidence. Most people brought their own or purchased ones like we find at Trader Joe's. There were also other sections for meat and seafood, but we ran out of time and had to leave for our next stop.

Milne Bay (Aloutau) saw some heavy fighting during WWII, and we visited a memorial to the mainly Australian and PNG soldiers who died here. PNG only received independence in 1975 from Australia and is still a Commonwealth nation. Originally the island of New Guinea was split three ways - the west was Dutch, the northern half of the east was German, and the southern half of the east was British. Of course, this ignores the fact that there were already many groups of people with numerous languages who already lived here. The British eventually let Queensland in Australia control "their" portion, and after WWI the German half was also "given" to Australia, although it was managed under a League of Nations mandate. All of this is to say that the legacy of Australian rule is driving on the left, and English as the common language, since there are so many dialects and languages in the diverse groups.

After our visits to the market and memorial we drove a little way out into the country, where a " village" has been created to allow for performances and interactions with several hill tribes, who come down to perform and share a bit of their culture. We had performances from two groups - quite different from each other - and also a cooking demonstration of some of the local foods. Everything was quite tasty, although the taro did take a lot of chewing. There were also fruits, including the best papaya I have ever eaten.

There were also some local craftspeople and items such as this dugout canoe. Lest one think that these are things of the past - we saw lots of men fishing from similar ones in the bay by our ship. I bought a little carved dolphin and Russ got a little turtle from one of the vendors - he was working on another carving in between sales.

We headed back to the ship for a late lunch, and a relaxing afternoon, since we really didn't want to go back out, considering all the warnings. We are hoping for a different experience tomorrow, when we will be in the Conflict Islands, which are privately owned, and away from the mainland. Our weather is also supposed to be better.
