Cities still known by exonyms in English tend to fall into a few categories:

Many cities in the Low Countries have traditional English exonyms. Many of these, such as Flushing for Vlissingen or Harlem for Haarlem have fallen out of use, but larger cities still tend to be known by their exonym. Most towns and cities in North Belgium were historically known by French exonyms, but are now currently known by their native Flemish names. The exceptions to this are Bruges, which is fairly large, and Ypres, which is widely known for its significance in WWI

Many major cities across Europe are known in English by their French names (i.e. Cologne, Belgrade, etc.) and a smaller number of cities are known by Italian influenced names (i.e. Vienna, Corfu, or Aleppo).

HMS Hermes was a British aircraft carrier built for the Royal Navy and was the world's first ship to be designed as an aircraft carrier, although the Imperial Japanese Navy's Hōshō was the first to be commissioned. Hermes was berthed in Trincomalee on 8 April 1942 when a warning of an Indian Ocean raid by the Japanese fleet was received, and she sailed that day for the Maldives with no aircraft on board. On 9 April a Japanese scout plane spotted her near Batticaloa, and she was attacked by several dozen dive bombers shortly afterwards. With no air cover, the carrier was quickly sunk by the Japanese aircraft. Most of the survivors were rescued by a nearby hospital ship, although 307 men from Hermes were lost in the sinking. The merchant ship SS Mamari III was converted to resemble Hermes as a decoy ship to confuse the Axis and was redesignated as Fleet Tender C. On 4 June 1941, when she was sailing down the east coast of England to Chatham Dockyard in Kent to be converted back into a cargo ship, the decoy Hermes hit a submerged wreck off Norfolk during a German aerial attack. Before she could be refloated, she was crippled by German E-boats and abandoned in place.

Remembering Sri Lanka’s Fallen Journalists: A Call for Justice and Support

On this solemn day, the 24th of January, we pause to honor the memories of two journalists whose lives were tragically cut short for their commitment to truth and freedom of expression.

Subramaniam Sugirdharajan (1970 – 2006) Popularly known as SSR, Sugirdharajan was a journalist for the Tamil-language daily newspaper Sudar Oli. At just 35 years old, he was brutally gunned down in the eastern port city of Trincomalee during the Sri Lankan Civil War. On the morning of 24 January 2006, assailants on a motorbike shot him at close range. A devoted father of two young children, aged three and two, SSR’s death left an indelible mark on the Sri Lankan media landscape. Today, his family, friends, and professional colleagues gather in Trincomalee to remember his courage and sacrifice.

Prageeth Ekneligoda (1960 – Disappeared 2010) Prageeth Ekneligoda, a cartoonist, political analyst, and journalist, disappeared on 24 January 2010, two days before a critical presidential election. Widely believed to have been abducted and killed under the presidency of Mahinda Rajapaksa, Prageeth’s disappearance remains unresolved. His ashes are thought to have been scattered, a grim symbol of the dangers faced by journalists in Sri Lanka. Today, his loved ones commemorate him at the Nawagamuwa Devalaya in Kaduwela, keeping his memory alive despite the shadows of impunity.

A War on Media Freedom The early 2000s marked a dark period for press freedom in Sri Lanka. Under the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government, which took power in April 2004, attacks on journalists escalated with alarming frequency. On 31 May 2004, veteran Tamil journalist Aiyathurai Nadesan was shot dead by government-backed paramilitaries in Batticaloa. His assassination ignited a campaign of violence against the media, silencing dissent with unprecedented brutality.

In the six years that followed, at least 43 journalists and media workers were killed or disappeared. Despite repeated promises from successive governments to investigate these crimes, no perpetrators have been brought to justice. The legacy of this violence persists, with families of murdered journalists left to bear the burden of loss, often without any financial or emotional support.

亭可馬里 Trincomalee

我本來以為我會沒時間到這裏潛水，但在Arugam Bay衝浪人實在太多，我決定提早離開，就轉來這裡看看。

大部分西方遊客都在市區北邊的 Uppuveli，或是Alles Garden，這區尤其多潛店，但我八月底去時能見度很差，只下了兩支。

來這裏大概都是學潛水的比較多，因為價格很便宜，或是早上搭船出去看海豚和日出，至於以前熱門的看鯨魚行程，也因為已經兩年沒有鯨魚了，所以業者都只會說他們不能保證看到。

這裡的海灘都是西方遊客穿比基尼躺沙灘，也有不少賣西方食物的貴貴咖啡店和餐廳。

而在靠近市區的 Dutch Bay 海灘大概都只有當地人在這裡玩水，當地女生都是穿著衣服直接下水，沒有人在這裡躺沙灘。但是這裡是一個小海灣，所以水面很平靜，海水反而更清澈，南邊角落甚至還可以浮潛。

市區有幾座印度廟很漂亮。

交通方式：

我從Arugam Bay一路搭巴士過來，一共換了五班車，花了約八小時。首先Arugam Bay到Pottuvi這段很近，如果叫嘟嘟車是500盧比，我是每天早上出門衝浪都有注意公車經過的時間，所以離開那天跳上6:50左右從Pannama開過來經過大街的巴士，十分鐘就到Pottuvi了，車上小哥都還來不及跟我收錢，我下車後走向他要付錢，他手一揮說下次吧！所以這段免費。

接下來我想等去Batticaloa的車，然後再轉車去Trincomalee，所以七點半有一班只到Kalmunai的巴士我就沒上車，結果八點半前後來了兩輛寫著Batticaloa的巴士，一班說等下十點才要發車，另一班是下午兩點。現場只剩下旁邊一輛只到Akkaraipattu的巴士，我別無選擇，8:40發車後約10:00到車站，車資200盧比，下車後車站出口正好有一輛車寫著Kalmunai，上車後馬上發車，約一小時到車站，車資120盧比。

在這裡下車後馬上看到後面一輛寫著Batticaloa的巴士要發車，我沒多想就趕緊上車，找到位置坐好後，正好回頭就看到再後面有一輛巴士76號寫著Trincomalee，但我已經來不及跳下去換車了。這輛車花了約一個半小時到Batticaloa，車資200盧比。下車後我剛好有時間買個冰棒吃，吃完剛剛看到那輛76巴士也抵達，下午一點換上這班可以到Tricomalee的車就放心了，車資550盧比，最後我在下午四點半總算到Trincomalee。

後來才了解，他們說 Pottuvi 到 Batticoloa 很多車，是包括那些短程只到半路 Akkaraipatu 或 Kalmunai 的車，這段路程的巴士通通是881號，但可能只跑其中一段，所以最好的其實是 Pottuvi 到 Kalmunai，然後可以直接轉76號巴士，從Kalmunai起站到Tricomalee終站，這樣也比較容易有位置坐。
