Volvo Cars has made an investment in the UK startup Breathe Battery Technologies, aiming to leverage its battery software to achieve a 30% reduction in charging time for the upcoming generation of electric vehicles (EVs).

The exact size of the investment from Volvo Cars Tech Fund, the company’s corporate venture capital arm, has not been disclosed.
Breathe’s technology is expected to be integrated into new Volvo EVs within the next two to three years. The partnership aims to address challenges related to power intake limitations in EVs during rapid charging, providing customers with a more efficient charging experience.
Breathe Battery Technologies’ CEO, Ian Campbell, highlighted that the company’s charging software, based on algorithms, offers enhanced visibility into the health of individual cells within a battery pack. This enables electric vehicles (EVs) to charge at full power while ensuring safety and without altering battery chemistry.
Campbell emphasized that this marks just the beginning of a substantial shift in batteries as they increasingly rely on software-defined solutions.
Faster charging times are crucial in encouraging more customers to adopt EVs. Breathe is also developing software to enhance battery durability and performance, with plans to make it available for EV batteries, aligning with automakers’ priorities in extending battery life.

Oh for sure I'm aware we're nowhere near having batteries that could work for this. Increasing the capacity of the batteries so you can get as far in one charge as anyone should be driving in a day anyway is definitely the sensible focus, as things stand.
But for much smaller battery-driven appliances, like chainsaws and lawnmowers, which are generally designed these days with removable batteries the size of small bricks, being able to keep one battery on the charger while you work and swap them out instead of halting everything so the device can nap extends its usefulness hugely.
So should there be a sufficient leap forward in battery technology to do that with cars, it would make the dang machines much more practical.
Okay also I’ve been driving electric cars long enough now to be really emphatic that the fact that they’re not all automatically built with solar panels in the roofs is a scandal.
And somehow almost every time I tell anyone this they roll their eyes and attempt to explain to me that this would not create a perpetual motion machine because of the limitations of the area relative to the power draw of the motor, which is incredibly annoying because that’s not the point.
Yes it’s possible that driving in the sunshine with a solar collector dripping into the battery would net you a little more mileage on that trip before needing recharge, but the usefulness of a solar-topped electric car is that if you drive it someplace–say, to work–and leave it outside in the sun all day, you’ll definitely have more range available by the time you’re ready to head home.
Also if you fuck up your calculations because of the inefficiency induced by cold weather or something and get yourself stranded without anywhere to charge, like halfway up a mountain or, more likely, six miles from home, you can call for rescue or walk away, come back later, and it’ll be able to move again.
This is important because unlike running out of gas you can’t really go get some electricity.
#i'm also aware of the wiggle problem but i do feel like it would be surmountable#if removable batteries were a goal the connections would be approached very differently#but like no matter how big the one single battery gets#you still have the 'can't use it it's charging' situation#eventually#which puts a lot of hard limits on the usefulness of such a vehicle#that ICE cars do not have#less so if its max range is long enough you almost never hit it so you don't have to fill the whole thing every time you top off#but still#most people who disagree with me on this post are so much ruder and more ignorant lmao ty#even if the distribution system gets up to the level gas stations are at the part where it takes a lot more than ten minutes to fuel up#and you can't go get some fuel on foot#are structural barriers to EVs granting the same kind of mobility as ICE as things stand#and my sci fi proposal is we Make Better Batteries until you *can* put electricity in the car Just Like That

Gravity Mobility, a Google-backed electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure startup, has officially opened the fastest electric car battery charging solution in the United States to the public in New York City.

This development was made with a focus on attracting fleet customers. The company is offering access to 24 of its 500-kilowatt (kW) chargers for major fleet operators. These chargers boast an impressive charging rate of 2,400 miles of range per hour or 200 miles in just five minutes.
According to Gravity’s CEO, Moshe Cohen, Gravity Mobility has the capacity to manufacture and deploy thousands of chargers annually, with additional sites already in development beyond the initial one in Midtown Manhattan. The company aims to rapidly expand its network, comparing its growth potential to the rate at which Tesla adds Superchargers each year.
For comparison, Tesla superchargers have a maximum power of 250 kW.
While Tesla has established agreements with various automakers for cross-brand access to its extensive charging network, Gravity Mobility sees the opportunity for substantial growth in its own network.
The company has also outlined plans to secure additional funding in the current year to expand its network of high-speed chargers across the United States.
Gravity’s chargers, compactly sized like carry-on suitcases, contrast with larger stands commonly used by automakers and other EV charging network operators. Despite the current charging speed cap of 350 kW for most electric cars, future models are anticipated to leverage faster chargers.

Headcanon where after so many arguments between the batkids and Bruce over his paranoia and complete disregard for his kids privacy, the entire family had compromised with (in the healthiest way possible) downloading life360 on their phones and that's how they all keep track of each other.
Now Bruce knew that this is mostly for his benefit and is supposed to be a healthy alternative for his unhealthy paranoia and helicopter parenting, but what he wasn't expecting was for his kids to start keeping track of him.
He's putting gas in his car and Dick calls him because apparently Dick has been watching him drive around on the app? And Bruce is currently at a gas station thats right around the corner from a Taco Bell and now Dick wants him to get food for everyone since he's already there.
He's driving home from a meeting and Steph calls him because her and Duke were shopping in the area and wants to know if he can pick them up, when he asks how she knew he was on the same street, he gets a "Oh I just like to stalk everyone on the app for funsies." as an answer.
Jason calls him and he can barely get out a hello before Jason cuts him off, "Bruce why the fuck is your phone battery on 5%, charge your damn phone" which completely stuns him because why does he know that. He clears his throat before answering. "Jason, what?"
"Everyone can see each others phone batteries on '360, now charge your phone." Is all he gets before Jason hangs up on him.
