As of this year, USB-C is mandatory in the EU. All phones must charge via USB-C. This is good, right?

Well, almost. It's a step in the right direction, but it won't solve everything.

All that is meant by USB-C is the shape of the plug and the port. The USB type C port can be used for USB 2.0, USB 3.1, different fast-charging technologies like QC, PD, and other protocols like HDMI, DisplayPort, and thunderbolt. USB-C ports can be used with all kinds of devices, cables, adapters, protocols, and drivers. Some use only a subset of the pins, or use the same USB-C port with a different pinout. Now in theory, the EU directive is also supposed to standardise chargers and fast charging technologies, forcing sellers of phones to clearly label what kind of charger a phone needs.

In practice, you may already have chargers and cables that are incompatible with each other, or get downgraded to 5W trickle-charging and USB 2.0 data transfer speeds.

In practice, you may have a USB-C power bank and a smart phone, and you might accidentally charge your power bank from your phone, instead of the other way round. setting up an ipod is harder than you fucking think

just spent the last life four+ hours setting up this ipod classic 4th gen. here's a summary of all the problems i ran into:

(1) ipod had files in it. they appeared as gray and un-editable on itunes, so i thought reseting the ipod to factory would be the fastest and easiest solution.

turns out the last step of the process is connecting ipod to a wall power source. i do this. nothing happens for at least an hour. ipod is stuck in "connect to the wall" icon screen no matter what i do. the internet says it needs to connect with an actual apple firewire wall connector, which i do not have. tried using my ipad's charger with a usb-to-usb-c adapter that i own. didn't work. eventually figured it out the problem had to do with the amps it needs to get defibrillated. i remember that i own a pretty hefty power bank with a 5v/2.1a output. it works. ipod is reset. i have a nice fun time adding the 6 or so songs i have downloaded on my computer (:

(2) i had downloaded soulseek a while ago and gotten frustrated with it but decided to give it another spin since piracy experts on reddit sing it many praises. it seems to have a heavy culture of egalitarianism: a pop up window informs you that a lot of people's download's are restricted only to other people sharing files.

i download one (1) lana del rey song that's stuck in my head. choose .flac (a lossless audio file) because i want to be fancy.

(3) ...........itunes doesn't read .flac files

__(3.1) searches: what files does itunes read? > which of these files is best for lossless audio? > how do i convert .flac files to itunes-compatible file types? > download foobar2000 > click around till i figure out how to convert .flac files to .wav files.

............but the metadata (album cover, genres, artist, album, etc) doesn't transfer. i don't want to manually input it again. searches: how to keep metadata when converting files? tutorial is slightly different from the version of foobar i have, but i eventually find the setting to keep the metadata.

.............but it won't transfer to my ipod ): i get the message: your ipod can't read this file <- paraphrasing.

okay. searches: what kind of files can an ipod classic 4th gen read? (perhaps they are different from the files itunes can read. this is, after all, the last version of itunes ever released, many years and itunes versions after the ipod classic 4th gen.)

this information isn't in the wikipedia page. this isn't in the ipod wiki. can't even find this model in the official apple pages. it's mentioned in several reviews but it's the wrong model. christ almighty. ok. here it is. found it. allegedly it should be able to read it. ok. why isn't it.

read through forum threads. some people say older ipods get fussy with high bitrates. (search: what is a bitrate? oh ok. higher bitrate > higher audio quality. got it.)

bitrates reccomended by foobar: 180-300something. lossless file bitrate: 2000 and change. hm. surely that's a huge difference.

i convert the .flac file to .mp3 instead.

Welp they finally did it, Nintendo gave us a first look at the fabled Switch 2. I guess they were sick of the leaks being passed around so wildly, would've figured they'd hold this off till way later if it weren't for that. Although I will say, kind of a missed opportunity to call it the "Super Nintendo Switch" for an NES/Super Nintendo vibe but Nintendo definitely needed to be as blunt as can be (the Wii U name and marketing disaster really changed their whole approach after all).

So far it's looking to be a pretty good improvement on what the original Switch models already have: better kickstand, USB-C on top and bottom (much needed when using a charging cable), the Joycons are magnetic which make em snap into place, the dock looks different but that's really it from first glance, and really it's just bigger all around (though I'm almost certain a Lite model is in the cards a while after release). Dunno about the analog sticks however, they look fine but I really hope they are vastly improved upon after all the drifting issues people had. Not to mention the backwards compatibility thank the high heavens...

I gotta hand it to them for flat out telling us it can play original Switch games both physically and digitally (means I can take my time playing these games even more), making it clear that yes you can keep buying original Switch games and not regret the purchase, but that caveat there:

I hope this only means some "very" specific games cause this raises questions for me, Nintendo. Upside though, at least our accounts don't have to be separate.

Only other things I'm curious about are the specs and price, but knowing Nintendo they'll make it just powerful enough to handle anything thrown at it and just affordable enough to get without breaking the bank (balancing price per power always did feel like their forte anyways).

All in all Nintendo did good so far, they improved on existing stuff, made it clear it's different enough and is backwards compatible, and really didn't have to make it a spectacle since it really feels more like a fine step-up in the Switch life cycle (makes sense really, within the top 3 best selling systems of all time you're not just gonna "switch" gears from that hehe). But hey...

...at least we're getting Mario Kart!

Probably the best minor purchase I have made in a while. (As little as I like that weird slanted outlet. Where of course I just noticed that random schmutz on the faceplate.)

Before caving and picking up that USB plug, I had a grand total of one (1) single-port Euro wall plug, besides the other one visible there which is dedicated to the mug warmer/wireless charging pad that lives on the table. Meanwhile, we've been living in Euro Plug Land for going on 3 years now.

With the amount of shit most people do need to regularly charge now, the British-outlet power strip and other 4-port hub at my nightstand have been getting pretty heavy use. Though, especially with regularly charging 18650s/21700s and after that power bank flare in our old kitchen? I really prefer to keep charging lithium batteries under closer supervision. Which rarely describes back in the bedroom, when I'm up and moving around.

This new one has one quick-charge port and 3 regular USB-A. One is dedicated to the charging pad for my new watch, which is nice not having to trundle it into the bedroom whenever I notice the battery is getting low. The others have a mix of micro-USB and USB-C cables to use for whatever.

Meanwhile, the cable management situation is something that really needs sorted out even more now. 🫠

Not all of those are even plugged in, BTW. There's a wall plug clippers charger and my laptop power supply somewhere in that mess.
