20-day-old baby Juma Al Batran, who had been sheltering in a tent in Deir al Balah, central Gaza, lost his life due to the extreme cold on December 29.

His dead body was brought to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the city for funeral arrangements.

Juma Al Batran's death raised the infant fatality from freezing temperatures in Gaza to five in the past week, as Israel's attacks continue to displace nearly the entire population of the enclave.

US Emergency Physician Dr. Mimi Syed, who is currently serving patients in Gaza, reports that Kamal Adwan hospital, the last operational hospital in north Gaza, is under total Israeli siege.

According to the latest reports on the social media of Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the hospital's director, the battering of Kamal Adwan has left only 25 patients and 60 healthcare workers in the vicinity.

The Israeli army's intent is to force the remaining civilians to the non-operational Indonesian Hospital, also in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza.

Syed also notes that many children and elderly individuals have begun and will continue to succumb to hypothermia due to the harsh winter conditions and inadequate shelter, which has been further exacerbated particularly in the north of Gaza by Israel's intensive targeting of healthcare and residential infrastructure.

"We're Dying From The Cold"

“We’re dying from the cold. This is not life, this is not living – I pray every day that we die to be relieved from this life,” Alaa says as she fights back tears. “No food, no water, no life.”

The UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) warned on Tuesday that “more babies will likely die” in the coming days.

The babies who died from hypothermia were all under one month old, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. A 2-year-old has also died from the cold in recent days, health officials said.

“I am watching my children die before my eyes,” says Yahya Al-Batran, the father of 20-day-old Jumaa, who died on Sunday. “He died from the cold, he froze,” he adds as he holds his child’s lifeless body at the hospital.

“Displaced people, already living through the unlivable due to the war, are now battling heavy rainstorms,” UNRWA said.

“Blankets, mattresses and warm clothes are sitting outside Gaza waiting for approval to get in,” UNRWA said on Tuesday. “More and regular humanitarian assistance must come into Gaza to help people stay warm this winter.”

“We are suffering from the rain, we were flooded,” he said. “I have three children who were freezing cold overnight in the camp from this weather. They need clothes, they need tents, proper tents that we can live in.”

Yousef Kaloub died of hypothermia in the so-called “humanitarian zone” in al-Mawasi in southern Gaza, according to local sources. “I am the mother of Yousef. I lost him.
