Removing and replacing the shower valve

A defective shower valve can be removed and replaced in a short time and with only a few tools. The shower valve controls the flow and temperature of the water that flows through the shower head. You can recognise a problem with the shower valve if the shower head leaks and drips, but the bath spout does not. The knob may also tighten and be difficult to turn.

Turn off the water supply

Turn off the water supply in the bathroom only or throughout the house, as needed.

Remove the shower/tub control fitting

Slide the blade of the slotted screwdriver under the edge of the plastic base for the control knob. Turn the shower/tub control knob clockwise to remove it. Loosen the large metal cover plate for the tap by loosening the screws with the Phillips screwdriver. Use the needle-nose pliers to pull the retaining clip off the front of the valve body.

Remove the shower valve cartridge

Screw the control knob back into the housing and pull it straight out of the wall to pull out the shower valve cartridge.

Replace the shower valve cartridge

Unscrew the control knob from the housing and pull out the shower valve cartridge. Fit the new shower valve cartridge and reinsert the cartridge and control knob housing into the wall.

Refit the shower/tub fitting

Clean the tiles and the back of the cover plate from accumulated limescale. Line the cover plate with the new liner. Make a new liner from self-adhesive sealing tape by measuring the depth of the cover plate edge and cutting the strip to the correct width and length.

Remove the back coating and press the sealing tape onto the back of the cover plate. Allow the strip to seal briefly and then reattach the cover plate to the control valve body. Refit the control knob and the base.

Test the new shower valve

Restore the water supply to the bathroom and turn on the tap to check if it is leaking.

Seal the cover plate of the tap

To minimise damage to the tiles from future leaks, place a thin strip of silicone sealant around the tap cover plate.

If you are like me, never know where to use this weird bathtub - I've got you covered!

Here's a replacement of the oriental bathtub using @honeywell-mts 's Wooden bathtub mesh and NNNNatali's textures.

Because of the way I made this default (without the use of CEP), the hardware part is invisible on the thumbnail but everything shows up properly in game, it's just the thumbnail thing.

Replacing a bathtub drain and overflow pipe

Loosen the drain fitting

First, remove the drain fitting from the bottom of the tub. Then use a drain wrench to grasp the drain set and unscrew it from the drain arm by turning it counterclockwise.

Unscrew the cover plate of the overflow

You may need to remove one or two screws here. The cover plate should pull off easily, but if there is a rubber washer, it may be hardened and require some force to remove the cover plate.

Remove the drain and overflow assembly

Loosen the drain and overflow assembly from the drain pipes either from the back or the bottom of the tub. Sometimes it is easy to loosen the nuts on the drain pipes and slide the assembly free, but if the pipes have been glued or soldered with solvents, it may be necessary to separate the pipes with a hacksaw or pipe cutter. Consider this carefully before making any cuts.

Test the installation of the new drain and overflow assembly

Separate the components of the drain and overflow kit and test fit them to your tub. If the kit does not fit the exact dimensions of your tub, you may need to do some trimming. Having someone in the tub to hold things while you align everything will make the job much easier.

Connecting the Drain Assembly

To connect the drain assembly, first apply a bead of plumber's putty around the flange of the drain opening from the inside of the tub. From the underside of the tub, place the rubber washer around the drain fitting thread, then slide the fitting up through the drain opening.

Attach the overflow cover plate

Position the overflow pipe gasket on the back of the tub, between the tub wall and the mouth of the overflow pipe. If the gasket is tapered, the thicker side of the gasket should be facing down.

Test the installation

Wipe away excess mastic around the flange of the drain assembly. Have your helper run water down the tub drain while you watch to make sure there are no leaks under the tub.

Replacing drains in bathtubs and sinks

Hinged drains are common in sinks and bathtubs, although they function differently. A sink's drain assembly consists of the plug, lifting rod, and drain pipe, as well as various nuts and washers. By moving the lifting rod up or down, the sink can be switched from free flowing to plugged to fill the sink with water. The plug of a bathtub is screwed into the drain of the tub and is either spring-loaded or can be opened by twisting and pulling. Both types of plugs can leak over time and need to be replaced.

Replacing the drain plug in the sink

Place a small bucket under the trap under the sink to catch the water that flows out of the trap when it is removed. If a bucket won't fit, place an old towel underneath.

Loosen the slip nut that attaches the end piece of the existing drain to the trap. Loosen the other slip nuts that attach the trap and lower the trap out of the way. Pour the water in the trap into the bucket and set it aside.

Using an adjustable wrench, loosen the locking screw that secures the lift bar to the lift strap. Slide the spring clip off the ball bar, then unscrew the ball bar nut and remove the ball bar.

Using the adjustable pliers, turn the mounting nut on the bottom of the sink counterclockwise and unscrew the nut. Slide the rubber thrust washer into the threads of the drain pipe - it will seat firmly and press against the underside of the sink - and then push the entire drain assembly up with one hand.

Unscrew the drain flange from the top of the sink by turning it counterclockwise while keeping the drain assembly from turning with your other hand. If the flange will not move, try inserting a screwdriver into the flange at an angle and turning it.

Clean the top and bottom of the sink and remove old silicone, rubber, dried putty and calcified debris. Use a plastic spatula so you don't scratch the sink.

Roll a piece of plumber's spatula in your hands and place it like a ring on the underside of the new drain flange. Insert the flange into the hole in the sink from the top, and then screw the drain fitting into the flange from the bottom.

Press the rubber thrust washer firmly against the bottom of the sink, align the ball socket with the back of the sink housing, and then tighten the flange nut. Make sure there is a plastic washer between the flange nut and the thrust washer. Pull off the plumber's putty that squeezes out around the flange in the sink.

Insert the drain plug through the top of the sink into the drain assembly, making sure the part with the hole for the ball rod is facing the back of the sink.
