Firefly
tsukishima akiteru x reader words; 2171 synopsis; a first love that's soft, gentle, and honest. a first love like a firefly is what akiteru wants- and it's what he gets.
The case of Tsukishima Akiteru was an interesting case to try and figure out.
Tsukishima Kei had determined that a major reason was that third years in high school are just weird.
Kei, although five years younger and not quite as emotionally intelligent, had picked up on a few things that could have led to his brother’s strange personality change. He had come to the conclusion that it was due to Akiteru’s best friend. It’s not as if she had poisoned him? It is possible though, Kei noted as Akiteru practiced flirting in the mirror one evening after she had come to study.
“Akiteru?” Kei asked, leaning against the bathroom door frame. The inky blue blackness of nighttime bleeding through the window and casting shadows onto the floor.
“Yeah?”
“Did Y/N poison you?” Akiteru’s eyes widened before shutting that idea down completely. Running his hands through the honeyed locks of his hair. Akiteru rested his hand on the sink counter and stared at himself in the mirror, before smiling and then ushering Kei out of the restroom. Once the brothers had arrived at Kei’s bedroom, Akiteru hovered by the door while Kei got ready for bed.
Akiteru pressed his lips into a thin line as Kei kept asking about why he was acting weird.
“I’m not acting weird. I’m being completely normal.” Akiteru stretched his arms out and shrugged. Kei wagged a finger at him.
Making a sour face and then getting under his covers, Kei spoke up, “Normal people don’t freak out when their friends come over to play.”
“It’s not playing, it's called hanging out.” Akiteru groaned.
Akiteru would have liked to admit to his brother the reason why he was acting weird, but seeing as Kei was still in middle school, and didn’t have much of a filter on his words, Akiteru reserved the reason for himself.
“Hanging out and playing are synonyms.” Kei huffed before pulling his blankets up and over his head and then pretending to snore loudly. Akiteru tapped the door before shutting it, leaving a small sliver open so the hallway light could illuminate Kei’s room.
Throwing himself onto his own bed, Akiteru screamed into his pillow, holding it close to his face so his yell could be muffled. Once he had finished letting out the noise that had built up inside of him, Akiteru leaned against the wall, letting his legs dangle over the edge of his bed as he held the pillow close to him. His phone buzzed and Akiteru dropped the pillow, silently praying that it was Y/n. His heart raced and he felt his entire body warm up slightly, an overwhelming side effect of having a crush he assumed.
A smile threatened to overtake all of his feature as he saw her contact image pop up on the screen. Thanks for having me over it was a lot of fun! Maybe next time we can study at my house?
Akiteru wanted to type a ‘yes’ with a hundred exclamation marks. But he settled for a ‘sounds good’. Sending the message, Akiteru bit down on his bottom lip before setting his phone face down and bouncing his leg. Waiting a minute, he picked up his phone again. No response. Setting his phone back down. Wait a minute. Pick it up. No response. Akiteru repeated the action for a bit longer until he reasoned that she had gone to bed.
Sighing, Akiteru laid down on his back. His hands underneath his head as he followed the blades of the fan spin round and round in seemingly endless circles.
“Say, Akiteru, you really should look through your photos.” Y/n muttered, hiding the bottom half of her face with the assigned reading, staring at him with her big doe eyes. Full of wonder and curiosity, Akiteru thought if he looked at her for too long, he would fall right into the colored pools of his daydreams.
“Okay...” Tapping the app icon, Akiteru chuckled when he saw endless silly selfies taken by her, probably taken when he went to go get some carrots to snack on. “You know I’m going to delete most of these, right?” Akiteru knew that he would keep all of them. But feigning disinterest he teased her by holding his finger over the delete button. She leaped out and tried to take the phone away from him, but Akiteru was faster and was able to lift his hand up into the sky, keeping his phone from her reach.
She ended up half way in his lap, her face by his shoulder and her arm wrapped around his neck. The back of his neck flared up with an uncomfortable, but familiar, warmth. She smiled at him before sighing dramatically and laying her back over his legs, the back of her hand on her forehead as she began a monologue of sorts.
“Woe is me. For some of those photographs were perhaps the greatest pictures ever taken of me.” Akiteru just laughed at her theatrics and ruffled her hair which broke her out of the character of the woman in agony and reverting back into his best friend.
“Happy birthday!” Akiteru squinted his eyes for a minute before yawning and rubbing his eyes, trying to wipe away any residual tiredness that wavered in his body. When he recognized the person at the foot of his bed as Y/n, he pulled his blankets up to cover his chest. She laughs before rolling her eyes. Saying something about how it's nothing she hasn’t seen before, and how him being shirtless doesn’t really matter that much.
Y/n went over to his chest of drawers and threw a t-shirt at him and clapped a few times before hopping out of his room and stomping down the stairs. Akiteru put a hand to his chest, feeling the uneven beats chase to rise his blood pressure. Putting the shirt on, Akiteru splashed some water onto his face while in the bathroom.
“She’s your best friend. Get a grip.” He criticized himself while looking into the mirror. Then he caught sight of his unruly bed head and tried to flatten the hair down.
Akiteru eventually made his way down the stairs, but stopped before his foot reached the landing. She was crouched down to meet Kei’s eye level as she moved his head around in a joking manner, her lips moving to say something. Kei held onto her hand with both of his and he nodded at her words, removing her hand from his head.
The interaction between the two made Akiteru smile.
“Hey, Akiteru, you ready?” She stood up, dusting off her pants and adjusting the straps of her cross-body bag.
“Ready for what exactly?” Akiteru leaned the side of his body against the wall, and sudden his senses were flooded. The smell of his mom’s cookies, the sight of Y/n when the sun hit her hair just right and made her look like something out of a fantasy, the feeling of his toes wiggling in his socks, and finally the taste of the toothpaste left over in his mouth from brushing his teeth.
“You and I are going on an adventure.”
She perked up a little, pushing her shoulders back and putting a hand on her hip. Akiteru meandered over to her and raised an eyebrow.
“Yay?”
“Yay indeed, Tsukishima.” Akiteru shook his head and she corrected herself. “Yay indeed, Akiteru.”
As it turns out, Y/n had planned for them to get lunch at a small diner while she drove down a long winding path. The destination still unknown to Akiteru. After picking up some food from the drive through, they ate while Y/n kept taking turns down a rugged and rocky path through a forest. The roof of the trees covering the light as shadows cover them and the car in a comforting blanket of darkness.
“Are you going to tell me where you plan on taking me, or is this the part where you murder me?” Akiteru chewed on the rest of his burger before putting the grease coated paper in the small garbage bag underneath his seat.
“Obviously murder you.” She scoffed before chuckling, taking her hand off the wheel to steal a fry from the cupholder. The grainy salt leaving a small oil trace on the steering wheel of the car. Akiteru caught sight of a small sign, and then the trees spat them out, escaping the darkness and leaving them in an open field of tall grass. The sun had begun to dim, a sunset splaying rosy and orange shades over the sky.
“This took a little longer than expected, but good thing it’s darker now!” Y/n put the car in stop before getting out, motioning for Akiteru to do the same. When he tried to run up to her, she shushed him and patted the air to signal for him to move slowly and quietly. Eventually he caught up and she lead him up a small hill, sitting down and toying with a small rock she had found.
Akiteru plopped down next to her, keeping a sort of distance that only he realized.
“You ready for this Akiteru.” She whispered, looking at the speckled grey rock in her hand.
The sun beat down on their backs and the darkness forming on the opposite end of the scale began to swallow up the earth in a paced effort. Akiteru nodded. And Y/n threw the rock into the grass.
Explosions of small floating lights flew up into the air. Like fireworks, or freckles, or even the way the sea glitters as it recedes back into its body of water. Dancing in the air, hundreds, if not thousands, of fireflies raced up into the air from the movement in the grass from the rock. Akiteru looked at the fireflies for a moment longer before pulling his eyes away to look at her.
Her eyes had spots of what seemed like pure gold moving around. Her face streamed with the moving lights, her features struck out at him, the shadows making her look like a painting done by a famous artist. He didn’t even notice that she had turned to face him until she was blessing him with a toothy beam.
“Do you like it?”
“No.” Her face fell, and she toyed with her sleeves, before Akiteru used his hand to move her face to meet his again. “I love it.”
They stayed like that for heaven knows how long. Milking every single second together, just enjoying existence. But all perfect things must come to a close eventually.
Once Akiteru and Y/N got into her car, she pulled up a small wrapped box from her bag. Akiteru felt like the luckiest guy on earth, not only did he get to see fireflies shooting throughout the air during a sunset, he also got a gift from his best friend.
There was a simple black bow on the lid, and a sheepish grin on her face as she handed it to him. He let the box weigh down in his hand. When he made no move to open it, she pushed his shoulder and clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth. Removing the ribbon, and tearing the wrapping away, Akiteru was met with a small stuffed toy firefly. Y/n angled her head downward, keeping her eyes on Akiteru, trying to read his expression.
“Kei means firefly. You and your brother seem close and I just thought, well, you told me about how you grew up without stuffed animals because you thought they were too childish for you, even as a six-year-old. It's meant to be a sort of memorabilia of us watching fireflies together, I guess? If you want I can-”
He cut her off by putting his hand on top of the one she had resting on her thigh.
“It’s a really good gift. Thank you.”
He really didn’t mean for his eyes to fall down to her lips. But he’s grateful that they did.
Swallowing thickly, she moved the armrests up, removing any barriers between them. Akiteru carefully and slowly moved his hands so that they were resting on her hips, tugging her to him softly. It was as if his body was acting entirely on instinct alone. Her hands ran to cup his face, a fingertip rested underneath either of his ears as her palms radiated heat into his face.
“Can I kiss you?” Akiteru nodded at her words. Moving in at the same time, Akiteru felt her mold her velvety sheened lips against his slightly dry ones. She pulled away but Akiteru rushed in for another kiss, keeping his lips planted against hers like he was trying to attach himself to her by the contact.
Akiteru got three gifts from her that day.
Getting to see fireflies.
A small toy firefly.
And a kiss that made him light up just like a firefly.

Winter Prompts Masterlist | Winter Prompts List
Pairing: Benny Miller x Reader
Prompts: Marshmallow/ Cabin/ Fish Out of Water
Tumblr media
You have tried. You have tried so goddamn hard.
You have gotten up at five in the morning to do a sunrise hike. You have put on hip waders and gone fishing. You have built a fire to cook the fish that you caught over—and dropped the fish into said fire.
Now, you're in the bathroom, picking leaves and twigs out of your hair after taking a tumble while trying to climb a tree. You sigh tiredly, looking yourself over in the mirror. You reach up, swiping some dirt off of your cheek.
You hear a knock on the door, followed by, “Babe?”
You force a smile onto your lips, chirping, “Yeah!”
Benny pushes the door open, a warm smile on his lips. “Dinner’s ready.”
“Okay! I’m almost done cleaning up in here.”
“Perfect.” He darts in, pecking your cheek before he leans away again, shutting the door behind himself. You sigh softly, closing your eyes and summoning all your strength. This is gonna be fine. You’re a good girlfriend, you’re down to try whatever he likes—right? You can swing this. You’re doing pretty well so far...Minus the fish incident, and the tree...Thing. You stretch, rolling your sore shoulders before you straighten your shirt.
You step out into the hall, and frown when you find the light off. You look back and forth before heading down the hall toward the living space. The cabin that Benny chose is in a beautiful location, and while the outdoors isn’t exactly your favorite, the cabin is perfect. The furnishings are plush and cozy. You can see the flickering of the fireplace as you get closer to the living and dining room.
“Babe?” You call out, “Is the power out or…Something…” You trail off, then go quiet at the sight of the table set for two, and lit with candles. You blink, surprised, then look over to find Benny walking from the kitchen with a bottle of wine and two glasses.
“What is this?” You ask with a stunned laugh.
“It’s dinner,” Benny answers—as if that should be more obvious. But you figured you’d have something easy—beans and hot dogs, sloppy joes, something like that. But the kitchen smells heavenly, and the wine seems to be the kind that had a cork removed, not a top unscrewed.
“Can I—” You start to gesture toward the kitchen, but Benny tuts softly, leading the way to the table. He sets the glasses and wine bottle down before he draws your chair back from the table. You lower into it, glancing back with a smile and a murmur of, “Thank you,” As he eases it closer to the table.
“I hope you’re hungry,” Benny adds as he pours you some wine.
“Very,” You nod. Before you can ask any questions, Benny leans down over you, pressing a warm kiss to your lips. You lean up into him, raising a hand and curling it in the fabric of his shirt. Before you can deepen it, he draws back. He gently chucks under your chin, then turns to get the plates of food waiting on the kitchen counter.
--
“So what’s the plan for tomorrow?” You ask. You’re a little sleepy, full of good food and good wine, and cuddled back against Benny. You’d tried to talk him into letting you do the dishes, but he’d led you to sit in front of the fire instead. He’d leaned back against the couch, and drawn you to sit between his legs.
“Mmm…” Benny kisses your temple, seeming to think for a moment. “Could spend the morning in bed…Have a late breakfast…Go for a walk, see where the day takes us.”
You frown a little bit, tipping your head back to look at him.
“But you come up here to be all—You know. Busy and outdoors-y.”
“Yeah, but you hate it."
Your expression falters, and you lower your gaze as Benny chuckles softly, curling his arms around you.
“I don’t hate it,” You grumble as he gathers you closer. “It’s just not—I’m not used to it, I don’t—”
“Baby,” Benny soothes, lips brushing your cheek. “I’m not mad. I just don’t want you to feel like you’ve gotta do these things ‘cause I like them. We’ve got the cabin for a week, so let’s find a middle ground, huh?”
You smile a little, taking one of Benny’s hands in both of yours.
"Is that why you made such a nice dinner?" You ask.
"No. That's why I talked Will and Frankie into driving up here to drop off takeout, which I put it on plates."
You cackle at his admission, tipping your head back against his shoulder.
“Was I absolutely awful today?” You ask.
“No.” Benny dips his head, nuzzling your jaw gently. “I could see you trying. That means a lot to me, you know?”
“I didn’t hate all of it. The hike was nice…Insanely early, but the sunrise was pretty.”
“Maybe we can put that on our list for later in the week. Head out a little later, choose a point nearer to here.”
“What about between now and then?”
“We don’t need every moment planned,” Benny insists, intertwining your fingers. “Let’s just enjoy ourselves.”

Narumayo Week 2023 Day 6
What if a freshly disbarred attorney sought refuge in his spirit medium friend's home? 🤔 Hence this idea!
Prompt: Domestic
The train station was utterly empty, except for the two of them. Phoenix lifted his duffel bag and took Trucy’s hand. She drowsily rubbed at her eyes, but managed to keep pace with him. He led her down the dark path, past the outlines of traditionally built houses. They finally stopped at the end, at one of the few residences that had a lit lantern. Not for the first time today, he hesitated.
Am I making the right decision in coming here? But…we have nowhere else to go.
And he knocked. A number of seconds passed, before footsteps padded within. The door cracked a fraction.
“...Nick?” A soft gasp, followed by a series of sliding chains. After the unlocking finished, the door flung wide open. Maya was in a light robe and her fingers pressed against her lips in surprise. “What’s going on?”
“I’m sorry, Maya. It’s a long story, but I messed up in court.” Two weeks ago, everything crumbled to pieces, and the memory was like a knife in his chest.
“You can talk later. Just come inside.” Her gaze flitted to Trucy while they removed their shoes.
“This is Trucy, she’s the daughter of my client. He’s gone missing, and well, she has nobody else except me now.” He had meant to call, but he didn’t know whether the phone reception had improved. “I should have asked if it was alright to bring her.”
“It’s totally fine! Pearl’s with me, and she’d love a new friend.” She smiled. “Let me set up the guest bedrooms. Kitchen’s that way, help yourself to the fridge if you’re hungry or thirsty. Bathroom’s on your left.”
It was the most kindness they had received as of late, and Phoenix felt tears prickling in his eyes. Yeah, he was pathetic. Somehow, he managed to make sure Trucy’s needs were met, with a cup of water and unpacking her favorite pajamas. Once she fell asleep in the child-sized futon, he collapsed at the dining table.
A soft rustling was near him. Maya didn’t say anything, only patiently waited until he was ready. He gave a fragmented timeline of events, and he was able to hold it together, even when it came to his disbarment.
“We hopped on the train at the last minute, but if it’s too much to allow us to stay here, we can leave.”
“Don’t say that! I’ll talk with the elders, but they won’t refuse the master-in-training. What matters most is that you and Trucy feel comfortable.”
“Thank you, Maya. Seriously.” He reached across the table, taking her hand in gratitude. “I knew I could count on you.”
Her cheeks reddened, but she squeezed back. “Well, I’m glad you did. You’ve saved me again and again; now, it’s my turn to look out for you. We’re partners, aren’t we?”
“Yeah, we are.”
“So, you should get some rest. You deserve it.”
He didn’t protest, trudging to the freshly laid futon. A small mirror reflected the dark circles under his eyes and his limp hair. His weary spirit must have surrendered, because as soon as his head hit the pillow, he was completely knocked out.
***
It wasn’t until he woke up, that he realized he didn’t have a nightmare. He stirred to the sounds of chirping birds and laughter. He tossed off the blanket, staggered into the sunlit corridor, and halted at the kitchen.
Trucy had the biggest smile he’d ever seen on her face, dotted with powdered sugar and strawberry juice. She was in the midst of talking to Pearl, over a stack of fluffy pancakes. Then, she noticed him and waved. “Good morning, Daddy! Look, we’re having breakfast!”
“I see, and you’re definitely enjoying it.” He tried a smile.
“Mr. Nick!” Pearl jumped to her feet, her expression conflicted. “Um, I heard from Mystic Maya that you’re in trouble but…you’ll be staying with us?”
He was about to clarify that it wouldn’t be for long, when a pair of arms hugged his middle. Maya peered around him, purposefully batting her lashes. “That’s right! We’re helping them as much as we can. Once you’re finished eating, why don’t you give Trucy a tour of the village?”
“Of course! I’ll do my best!” Pearl rolled up her sleeves in anticipation. A few minutes later, the girls darted out, holding hands. They were already fast friends; Phoenix was a little reassured.
The pancakes were good, and he managed to finish his serving with coffee, before Maya asked. “Isn’t there anyone else who can help us?”
“Edgeworth’s working abroad, he was part of an international case and wanted to gain experience from other legal systems. Franziska is also busy on the East Coast, and I’m not sure how capable Gumshoe would be in this situation. Larry’s on a journey to pursue his artistic genius, or whatever. And I guess that’s it?”
“Bummer. I’d channel Sis if I could, but my connection’s still recovering since winter. Oh!”
“What?”
“The forger never met me. I can approach him.”
“Maya, that might be risky.”
“I’m willing to take the risk, if you get your badge back. And didn’t we just deal with much worse?” She raised her eyebrows.
“Well, you have a point.” He paused. “And I’ll try to look for Zak Gramarye. He challenged me over a game of poker, so I’ll start there.”
“Sounds like a plan! One more thing, Nick?”
“Yes, Maya?”
“We have house rules to go over.” She rattled off a list. “No working on weekends! Grocery shopping is on Saturday, and we divide up the days for meal planning. The calendar doubles as a rotating schedule for cleanup and laundry duties so add your names. Television is only turned on after homework’s finished. And last but not least: all arguments need to be resolved by bedtime. That’s my rule, because of what Pearl went through.”
“Ah, I understand. But everything’s reasonable.”
“Most of them were my sister’s, made when we were living together.” A fond yet sad smile crossed her face. “I hope I’m doing half as good as she did.”
“If you aren’t already, I’d be shocked.” He stood from the table, stretching his legs. He offered his hand to Maya, which she readily accepted. “And I promise we’ll be model guests.”
He never did think of an end date for their stay, but a week turned to a month, sliding into the next. The apprehensive stares of the village folk became neutrally polite, and friendlier with Trucy’s bright expression and happy waves. At first, he chafed at the weekend breaks, but he slowly realized that it was necessary to recharge. Walking around the perimeter to enjoy the wildflowers, eating flowing noodles and shaved ice, admiring the mountains as the green foliage was exchanged for a striking autumn landscape. Every night, the stars were visible in Medium Valley, an endless river of light. It was…comfortable.
And then, it was already December. He unzipped his hoodie and removed his new beanie, calling out. “I’m back!”
Momentarily, the usual routine ensued. Trucy raced around the corner to hug him, and he lifted her off her feet. “Welcome home, Daddy! How was your day?”
Progress had been slow on his end, without a trace of his former client. Maya was faring better with the Mishams, although they were reclusive and kept their distance. Instead, he said. “I won a piano in my last game. It’s in the store, but maybe, you can see it next time.”
“Yay!”
“A piano?” Pearl chimed in. She had to have grown at least an inch, he was certain. “Do you know how to play?”
“Not at all. Guess I’ll have to figure it out.” As I always have.
“I think Mystic Maya played, a long time ago. And speaking of her,” She lowered her voice, her eyes narrowing. “Mr. Nick, didn’t you say you would shave this morning?”
“Sorry, I forgot.” He was neglecting his facial scruff, and Pearl apparently disliked it, mumbling that knights in shining armor didn’t have beards.
“Pearly! I used to bang on a keyboard, but it’s been forever.” Maya’s voice soared from the living area. “And everyone can get in here now, it’s ready!”
The girls took his hands, excitedly leading him over. The middle of the room was now taken up by a low table with heavy covers and topped with books and a plate of orange slices. Maya was already seated, her legs underneath, and she was completely relaxed. Phoenix sat next to her; his feet were rapidly warmed.
“I’m so glad we finally dug this out of storage.” She sighed, leaning her head against his shoulder. On the other side of the table, there was giggling, but when he flashed a look, Pearl and Trucy had crammed their mouths with orange.
“Yeah.” He agreed. “This is nice.”
He took it all in: the sweet tang of citrus, the cozy blankets, the gentle heat suffusing his entire body. In this moment, with Maya, Pearl, and Trucy…he was home.

Mad Love Masterlist
Showering after a long plane ride, no matter how comfortable and, dare you say, bougie, said plane ride is, does a world of good for the soul. By the time Michael’s finally beginning to get a little impatient (which, for Michael, is pacing back and forth and getting just a little closer to the door every time), you’re feeling refreshed and like you can actually stand to be around people.
Michael’s started switching up his wardrobe, and you’re pleased to see that he’s continuing that trend here in New Orleans. He looks alluring in a wine-colored, button down, short-sleeved shirt. His arms–yes, you can see his arms, and yes, it’s incredibly distracting and makes you want nothing more than to take the shirt off of him–are lightly tanned, completing the “California boy” look that he sports so effortlessly. He leans casually against the wall, his black jeans tucked into a pair of Doc Martens. Hey, Rome wasn’t built in a day.
“You ready to go?” You grin, checking your lipstick in the mirror one more time before flipping the bathroom light off. “I’ve been waiting on you for ages.”
He knows that you’re just teasing him, but he can’t resist taking the bait and scoffing. “What? I’ve been the one waiting for you!”
“Whatever you need to say to make yourself feel better.”
“You’re infuriating.” Regardless, he holds his hand out for you to take. “C’mon, we’re not far from where I want to take you, so we’ll walk there.”
Exactly where you walk is an open-air market that’s one of the most vibrant markets you’ve ever been to. Music of all kinds plays from the different booths and storefronts, all types of wares are being sold around you, and there’s so much delicious-smelling food that it makes your head spin. You almost drift off into the crowds without Michael, forgetting that he’s even with you until you’re stopped because you’re still holding onto his hand and he hadn’t been expecting you to walk away.
He stands next to you at each booth you walk to, always right there should you need him but quiet enough that you keep forgetting he’s actually still here. This proves handy, because then you can ask him his opinion of different items that you’re looking at, including the woven bracelet that you now hold up to show him.
“Do you think Kate would like this?” you ask.
When you had told her of your Fall Break plans and asked her to watch your cat, Kate had jokingly asked for a keychain souvenir as payment. You had been planning on buying a gift for her anyways, but now that she was doing you a favor, you had to get her the perfect thank you gift.
“She wore that friendship bracelet you two made when you had your drunk sleepover until it literally fell off,” Michael notes with a cheeky smirk. Said bracelet was just three pieces of embroidery floss clumsily braided together that didn’t last long, but his point is taken. “Yes, I think she’ll like it and wear it all the time.”
“Hmm.” You look at the bracelet again, which looks like somebody harnessed a rainbow and wove it together into a circle, before nodding. “You’re right.”
As you make the purchase, you’re pretty sure you hear Michael mutter behind you that he’s “always right,” but you choose to let him have his little snide, secretive comment.
Half of the fun of going to this type of market, you realize as you walk and window shop with Michael, is the experience in itself. There’s something so fun and unique about getting to look at all of the goods and wares created by so many different people, people who all have lives and stories that have led them here to this moment. They’ve spent years perfecting the craft that they now display for you to look at and enjoy, and the shared human connection of it all is so special.
Another fun part of markets is all of the food, and as you pass a booth and smell the sweet dough, you gasp in delight and pull Michael to a stop. “Ooh, beignets!”
Naturally, you have to place an order at the stall being run by an uninterested kid who couldn’t be older than 16 and is obviously being forced into helping out by family; that’s how you know it’s going to be good before you’ve even laid eyes on your food. When they put your order down unceremoniously in front of you, a basket of little golden-brown pastries dusted liberally with powdered sugar, you thank them before grabbing it and immediately popping a beignet in your mouth. It’s a little too hot, but you’d rather breathe awkwardly like a dragon for a few moments than let that deter you.
“Mmm!” Michael watches you enjoy the treat, and you hold out the little paper container towards him. “Here, try one.”
“What does it taste like?” Michael asks a little apprehensively.
“It’s a pastry with powdered sugar on top, Michael, I can guarantee you’re going to love it.”
Though he looks a little like he thinks you’re going to poison him (which, if you were, wouldn’t you have done so already?), he takes a small bite of the treat that you’re holding directly in front of his mouth. After chewing for a moment, he grabs the beignet and eats the other half of it, making you smirk in satisfaction. You know your husband, even if he likes to act like you don’t.
Taking a seat on an empty bench, you share the beignets in companionable silence as you watch the colors of the setting sun streak across the sky above you. When you’ve finished, you ball up the empty container and toss it into the trash can next to you before resuming people watching. Families, couples, friends; all different types of people, gathered here to enjoy the same event as you.
“What are the little lights flying around?” Michael asks finally, dusting his hands off of powdered sugar remnants.
You look at where he’s gesturing, to the lights beginning to blink on and off intermittently in the grass now that the sun is well and truly setting. “They’re fireflies.”
A couple of kids run in front of you, hands outstretched as they try to catch the fireflies. The act reminds you of your own childhood, and you smile fondly at the memory. The warm air on your skin, the ambiance of the market, and having the love of your life right next to you make you wish that you could bottle up this moment and keep it with you forever.
With this sentiment in mind, you can’t help but note, “It’s so beautiful here.”
“It is,” Michael agrees. “Tulane’s a pretty good school too, from what I’ve heard.”
He’s right, but that’s besides the point, and you look at him in surprise. “You’ve been researching grad schools for me?”
“I figured I’d look, maybe try and help to be a part of this process.”
“Michael, that’s really sweet of you.”
Michael shrugs, suddenly bashful. “It’s definitely not a selfless act. I don’t want to hate wherever we end up living for the next three years.”
“Well obviously. Still, I very much appreciate it.” He can try and act like there’s no goodness in him, but you know there is, and that he didn’t even think of himself when looking at schools. No, he wants to make sure that you have the best opportunity available, and you can’t thank him enough. “You’d like New Orleans?”
“It’d be a big change from California, but I think so.”
Standing up, you smile at Michael’s bemused look and use the skills that have lied dormant since childhood. You take a couple of quick steps into the grass and, choosing to attack from above, swipe your hands down and cup them around a firefly. When you peek between your fingers and see that faint glow, you walk back to Michael.
“Here, hold out your hands,” you instruct. He does so hesitantly, holding them open just enough for you to dump your catch into his waiting grasp.
When he looks into his palms to see a fat firefly lazily buzzing around, his face lights up. It’s near-instantaneous, a childlike joy that only you’re privy to see from him, and you feel so lucky that you can. His eyes shine, both physically from the light as well as emotionally from the excitement. It’s addicting; you’d catch a thousand fireflies for him, if this is how he would react every time you presented him with your bounty.
The firefly finally figures out how to leave its little corral, and you both watch it make its way back to the other fireflies lingering in the grass. Michael traces one of his palms with his fingertips, chasing after the phantom sensations left behind by the insect.
“You should try and catch one!” you encourage Michael.
He actually looks like he’s about to take your advice, until his phone buzzes and he pulls it out to see that the alarm he set is going off. It’s 8:45, which means that date night is over and it’s time to get down to business.
“Maybe next time,” he says in a tone that suggests he’s a little bummed that he can’t grab his own firefly. For Michael, unfortunately, his divine purpose must come first.
He takes your hand in his again, and you walk back towards the main road. Everything about your trip must be pretty centrally located; Michael’s too fond of transmutation to not use it at every opportunity, and the only time he doesn’t is when he can enjoy the quick journey.
“Are you nervous?” Michael asks suddenly.
“For tonight?”
He shakes his head. “No. To graduate and launch into another phase of your life.”
It’s very easy to forget that Michael isn’t like you and that he didn’t share in the panic-inducing (almost) universal experiences of graduating high school and realizing that you’re an adult and responsible for your own choices now. “Of course I am. Applying in itself is nerve wracking, and if I decide to go to school in a completely new area? That’s terrifying. But I’m also excited, and that’s mainly because I’m going to have you there with me to experience all of it–the good and the bad, though hopefully there’s not a lot of bad.”
“I don’t have precognition, but I still foresee a lot of good in our future.”
You don’t say it, but you just hope there’s a future for you that doesn’t involve nuclear winter.
The lights are off at Dinah’s production company, making it look, for all intents and purposes, closed for the night. Either Dinah left the front door unlocked or Michael uses his magic, because the door opens easily when Michael pulls on the handle and lets you walk in before him.
The Voodoo Queen of New Orleans is waiting for you when you step inside, her face lit by the street lamps outside. She’s in an outfit different from what she wore when you were here earlier in the afternoon; though the fabric remains just as crazy, even you can feel the magic imbued within each stitch. Her ritual clothes, then.
“Lock the door behind you,” Dinah commands. Michael does as she asks, and you can hear the lock click into place. After he does this task, she nods and gestures for you to follow. “Let’s go, I got places to be after this.”
Dinah leads you both into her dressing room and through the door that she had come through when you first arrived here earlier in the day. It’s smaller than her dressing room, and obviously used for rituals. Candles are set up on the tables and stands around the room, and the main table, ringed with four chairs, is covered in brightly-colored cloth. A variety of different items sit on its surface, waiting to be used by the woman herself.
Michael pulls out a chair for you to sit in, and you settle yourself onto the seat before he pushes your seat back up against the table and sits down next to you. At the door, Dinah is writing some sort of runes on the wood with chalk. When she finishes with what you assume is a protection charm, she pulls a pack of matches from the pocket of her skirt and begins to light each candle in the room individually. Even with your limited knowledge of the subject, you know that pyromancy is a skill that most magic users master easily.
Sensing your confusion, Michael leans over so that he can whisper in your ear and explain, “It’s a part of the ritual.”
Once all of the candles are lit by her own hand, the woman sits down in the chair on Michael’s other side. She studies you harshly for a moment, making you squirm under her scrutiny, before looking at Michael. “You sure that you want your honey in here to meet Papa? After all, she’s nothing but a pretty little mortal.”
“Y/n is under my protection, which means she is under my father’s protection. Papa Legba cannot touch her soul. If she wants to be here, then she has every right to be here.”
You try to channel a bit of Michael’s confidence and level Dinah with what you hope is a convincing glare when you nod. Inside your pocket, however, you clutch the charm Mallory gave you tightly enough to leave imprints on your palm.
She shrugs. “Alright then. Your funeral, baby girl.”
You’d be lying if you said you weren’t terrified to witness whatever is about to happen, especially after the Cordelia summoning went so incredibly wrong. But will you allow your husband’s reluctant ally to know that? Hell no.
Dinah holds out her hand to Michael, who gives his over freely. She turns it so it’s facing palm-up, and takes a deep breath in before beginning to knock on his wrist. After she does so, she places her wrist against his briefly before swiping up a bottle of liquor from the table. The amber liquid is poured into a copper mug, Dinah bringing the mug up to above her head in order to pray to it.
“Papa Legba,” she begins. “Ouvrier barrier pour moi agoe.”
This chant is repeated twice more, but it only takes her invoking him the second time for the shadow of a tall figure wearing what looks to be a top hat to rise against the blank canvas of the wall. As Dinah chants one last time, a cold wind sweeps through the room and brings with it an echoing, deep laugh and the sound of bones clinking together. You grab onto Michael’s hand for reassurance, but reassurance is not what you get when you look at him and see his eyes completely swallowed by black.
Papa Legba looks like a man, but carries an energy that lets anybody and everybody know that he is so much more than just a man. He’s dressed finely, wearing a suit and carrying a walking stick. The top hat that sits on top of his long dreadlocks is decorated with tiny skulls and feathers. A necklace made of beads and claws rests around his neck, and his long cloak sweeps along the floor. White paint covers the top half of his dark face, and his eyes are blood red.
He takes the cup from out of Dinah’s grasp with his own bejeweled hand, his long, pointed fingernails lingering against her skin as he does. Papa Legba drains the liquor from the cup, sighing deeply in satisfaction after he does so. The entire time, Dinah watches in open-mouthed awe, an acolyte faced with the presence of that which she worships faithfully.
“Dinah Stevens! Calling upon me so soon after our last…chat, eh?” He looks down at a couple of cigars sitting on top of a decorative silver plate and hums. “Mm, lucky for you that I cannot resist Cuban cigars, Mambo.”
The empty cup is discarded for one of the cigars, which he holds to his nose in order to properly enjoy it before scratching one of his nails against the end and lighting it. The cherry glows red as he takes a couple of deep puffs, the air growing hot around you as you watch the way that the shadows surrounding him morph in a sentient-like way that shadows most definitely should not be able to move.
Papa Legba takes a seat in the chair next to you, stretching out languidly in a way that reminds you of a cat. In response, you scooch your own chair just a little bit closer to Michael, your heart thundering in your chest.
“The Antichrist – and his little wife!” Papa Legba greets, his voice echoing and layering on top of itself.
Michael nods in a show of deference, and you do the same. “Papa Legba,” Michael says, his voice sounding an octave lower and echoing just as Papa’s does.
“I am sorry that I could not attend the wedding festivities, mes chers.” He grins at both of you, his gold tooth glinting in the candlelight. “A little drama with your papa, you see. But the entire Underworld was very much abuzz at news of the nuptials, I assure you.”
“We appreciate your well wishes.” Instead of saying anything, you simply nod and smile as a companion to Michael’s statement. You’re sure it looks as forced as it feels. “I assume you know why I asked Dinah to facilitate this meeting?”
He shakes his head, but the smirk on his face gives you the feeling that he knows exactly why he’s here. “I haven’t the faintest idea.”
“You’ve abandoned your post,” Michael reminds him.
“Oh, that!”
“Yes, that.”
“I will be honest, Mr. Langdon, this was the outcome I was hoping to achieve as a result of my actions.”
“There are easier ways to arrange a meeting with me.” Michael smiles meanly, thanks to his demonic nature. “But that’s neither here nor there. Why did you want to meet?”
You and Dinah glance at each other from across the table, both relegated to silent observers as the other two parties in the room get down to business.
“The lords of Hell are not too pleased with the current plans. Ending the world?” Papa Legba tuts and shakes his head. “Now, that just takes all of the fun out of everything. Who will barter with me when the only souls left on Earth are devoted followers of Satan or half-dead?”
“Ah, so you’re the messenger.”
“I’ll confess, I have been sent by my fellow demons to attempt to sway you. For some reason, they think that I am the best public speaker.” He puts a hand to his chest as if he’s touched by the sentiment.
“And how are you attempting to sway me?”
“My dear boy, I am here to convince you not to start an apocalypse.”
The moment he finishes his sentence, Michael’s anger causes the flames of the candles to burn brightly towards the ceiling. Though Papa Legba tries not to act affected by the show of power, you can see how even the shadows begin to cower away from their master in fear.
Out of all the possible reasons Papa Legba could have given for wanting to meet with Michael, this was one that you never even imagined. Literal demons are on your side when it comes to the apocalypse issue? You thought that they would have loved nothing more than to have free reign on Earth, but the point raised by Papa, of their entire purpose being annihilated along with the world were Michael to end it, is intriguing. Still, you try to feign disinterest, especially seeing how pissed Michael is. If he were to find out that you agreed, especially now, then the only thing certain about his reaction is that it would not at all be good.
“I don’t know whether to call this bold or stupid,” Michael says. “Attempting to organize a coup, with the knowledge and support of the one diametrically opposed to your plans? It’s certainly unique, I’ll tell you that.”
“But that’s where you’re wrong. This is not a coup, Mr. Langdon. Rather, a plea. I wish to lay out our case, and you may decide what you will do with that information.”
Michael looks like he’d enjoy nothing more than sending Papa Legba right back to the Underworld. In a show of restraint, however, he sits back in his chair and nods. “Go on, then.”
“We understand the logic behind Satan’s desire to end the world in a blaze of fire. It’s…poetic, in a way, and it would give him finality in the battle he’s been waging with Heaven since the moment he fell. However, think about what happens after the world ends! The hierarchy of Hell and the Underworld–poof! Gone! There is no more bartering to be done, no more corrupting to do, no more souls to claim. The human race will be basically extinct, and without our function, we–that is, demons–will cease to exist. Hell will likely cease to exist.”
This makes a lot of sense, actually. If there is nobody around to invoke Papa Legba and attempt to trade with him, then Papa Legba serves no use to the grand scheme of the universe. Much in the way that the old gods faded from reality as they simultaneously faded from the minds and beliefs of those who once called themselves followers, the creatures that populate the Underworld would have nobody to fear or believe in them.
“Therefore, I must ask you to think of the potential consequences and find another way to accomplish what Satan has tasked you to do.” A puff of cigar smoke is inhaled deeply by Papa Legba before he breathes it out again in a perfect ring, physically putting a period at the end of his speech.
Michael tilts his chin up in response, his expression one of defiance and rage. “I will fulfill my birthright and the plans that my father has been preparing me for, and nothing will stop that. Not you, and not if all the legions of Hell were to band together.”
“That just might have to be arranged, then.” Papa Legba stands, towering over your little group once more.
You get the feeling that this is what he had expected of this meeting, which doesn’t do your nerves much good. What’s Plan B for demons, when Plan A involves shirking their responsibilities as gatekeeper between the worlds?
Taking the last cigar that had been offered to him, Papa Legba slides it up the sleeve of his coat until it disappears. When he looks at Michael, he grins and laughs. “Until next time, Antichrist.”
With a gust of wind and the clinking of bones, he turns and melts into his shadows. Still, the heat remains, and you realize then that it’s Michael, still furiously glowering at the spot just occupied by one of Hell’s highest-ranking demons, that’s the source. As you fruitlessly call his name and try to get his attention, doing anything you can to bring him back from the demon that currently inhabits his body with no signs of relinquishing it any time soon, you think about just how foolish your earlier hopes of a normal future with Michael had been. As of right now, it appears that if Michael has his way, even the demons of Hell will be annihilated by the nuclear bombs, and sooner rather than later.
Shit.

NO. 9 THE VERY NOISY NIGHT
Sleeping in Shifts | Tossing and Turning | Caught in a Storm
Prev. || Masterlist
Cw: starvation, captivity, mentioned stabbing/abuse, past drugging
A storm was coming.
As Mathias left the room, shutting the door behind himself with a soft click, Kaden felt themself drawn to the window. The curtains had been drawn closed, layers of thick, dark velvet blocking out every sliver of natural light. With a single, smooth movement, Kaden pulled them aside.
The world outside was dark. They could feel a stiff sort of light trying to break through the dark canvas of clouds, but all that resulted in was an eerie sort of illumination which didn’t allow much sight. It was true, what Mathias had said. The first of many raindrops were just beginning to fall, a harsh wind that shook the tree branches outside blowing them against the panes of glass. Almost instinctively, Kaden found themself reaching for the latch. They always loved the chill of the breeze, the feel of the rain from the comforts of the indoors, but they stopped themself. For whatever reason, they were sure that that would just make Mathias upset.
Pulling the curtains closed, they crossed the room to the door that led to the bathroom.
True to their suspicions, the bathroom was just as they had expected. Large. Though there were no windows, the clean white tiles that covered the floor allowed for that to be overlooked, creating an open feel. A walk in shower took up nearly a quarter of the room, a pristine white bath tub built into a small enclave in the walls. A large mirrored vanity supported a bowl sink, the cabinets below open to reveal fresh, fluffy towels, cloths, and containers sealed with what appeared to be bandages and other means of first aid. Hanging from a hook just by the door, a plain, yet clearly expensive robe was placed. It all felt so… clean. Kaden was afraid to touch anything for fear of dirtying the entire room.
Carefully, shutting the door behind them—noting how there was no lock—and stepping across to the shower. The off-white bath mat was soft beneath their bare feet, in a way that was clear it had never been used.
What kind of rich person bullshit was this…
With a quick survey of the room to soothe the nag in the back of their mind, Kaden pulled open the door to the shower and turned the water on hot, wrenching their arm back before it could get wet. Even after being kidnapped, stabbed, starved, and drugged, there was still nothing worse than stepping into a cold shower.
They pulled a towel from the cabinent and set it on the counter before shedding their clothes, careful to avoid their reflection in the mirror. Based on the glimpses caught from the corner of their eye, Kaden knew that they wouldn’t like what they saw. The only bandages that covered them now was a large patch bandaid covering the wound on their shoulder. Their neck and cheek were almost entirely healed, with only a small bit of discoloration and scarring. Kicking Mathias’s borrowed clothes aside, they stepped into the shower.
They let out a small hiss as the scalding hot jets beat down against their back, quickly fumbling to turn the temperature down. Okay maybe that was a bit too warm…
It quickly faded to a cooler temperature, still hot enough to turn Kaden’s skin red under the contact. The water pressure was perfect, something their pathetic shower head back home could never dream of matching. They quickly found all their troubles slipping away with the steam, their mind settling to a quiet. They gave themself a moment to just enjoy the peace of it all, leaning heavily against the shower’s wall before turning to examine the arrays of shampoos and conditioners that filled one of those shower shelf thingies—Kaden couldn’t remember the name.
All sorts of different name brands lines the rack, the seals all intact. Kaden couldn’t help but feel a little overwhelmed. They had never taken much care of their hair, outside the typical washing and brushing. It was more a chore than anything to them, something that consumed both time and energy with little gain.
They grabbed the first bottle they saw labeled “shampoo”. Good enough.
After that, they made quick work cleaning themself up. With no way other than instinct to tell the time, they worried that they would go over the time limit they had been given and get punished.
They couldn’t have been in the shower any more than ten minutes before they turned the water off, a sigh escaping their lips as they realized that they would now have to leave the warmth of the shower.
The air in the bathroom was cold, quickly canceling out any of the remaining soothe of the shower. Kaden grabbed the towel, quickly wrapping it around themself before shivering.
After they dried off, Kaden pulled the robe over themself and knotted it loosely in the front. They spent a few moments digging through the drawers below the sink before they found a hair brush, using that to untangle their hair.
They carefully stepped out to their room, hair dripping onto the soft fabric of the robe before they spotted a stack of clothes left atop their freshly made bed. Kaden frowned as they examined the collared shirt and pressed pants, but they knew they didn’t have a choice and pulled them on.
They were almost disgusted to find they fit perfectly. A pair of plain socks and shoes had been left at the foot of the bed, which they pulled on as well.
Why the hell did Mathias know their shoe size?!
Though they were almost certain it had not been half an hour, the door to their room opened just as they were lacing their left shoe. They glanced up, a sharp sting of fear seizing their chest as their eyes met with a familiar dark gaze.
“Hurry up, little rat,” Daniel spat, his stony face somehow looking even more menacing as he stepped into the room. Their breath catching, Kaden carelessly knotted the lace and stood, cringing as the man crossed the room and grabbed their arm none too gently.
“Boss’s never been one for patience,” He muttered as he began to drag them out, slamming door behind them.

Soup.
Goddamn- chicken noodle soup.
That was all they had said. Chicken. Noodle. Soup.
Why the fuck was the table covered in every food to seemingly exist?!
Biscuits and vegetables and bread and salad covered nearly every inch of the deep red table cloth, all positioned around an unlit candle centerpiece in the extravagant dining room.
What Kaden saw, they expected from a castle. High ceilings complete with a chandelier—a chandelier. Was this man serious?!—dark crown moldings accenting wine colored wallpaper, curtains that matched the tablecloth drawn back to reveal the storm outside. By now it was pouring, cracks of thunder booming as lightning illuminated the sky. Kaden stared ahead, slack jawed as they examined the eight seating table, only set for two, yet with enough food to feed a small army.
“Why hello, darling,” Mathias gave them a sly grin, leaning over the armrest of his own chair as he balanced his chin in his hand. “I hope you’re hungry.”
Kaden could do nothing but gape as Daniel all but dragged them over to the only other set plate, the seat opposite of the head Mathias sat at.
“What.. why…” They couldn’t seem to form the words.
“It’s been a while since you’ve eaten, love, and I like what’s mine to be kept in good shape. You’re no use to me starved,” He chuckled, but Kaden’s mind didn’t register much past the “what’s mine” part as Daniel shoved them down into the open chair.
“Doesn’t this.. seem like a lot?” Kaden whispered breathlessly as Mathias stood, his uncannily white teeth on display as he grinned and began to pile food on the plate in front of them.
“Oh, not at all, not at all,” He smiled, pouring a large serving of soup into Kaden’s bowl. They hated how their stomach flipped, an excited anticipation taking over their mind as they realized that they’d finally get to eat. And god, did the food smell amazing… “only the best for you, love.”
Kaden could barely hold themself back as Mathias sat down in his own chair once more. They glanced at the utensils lined on either side of their steaming plate, multiple sizes of forks and spoons. They were unsurprised to find that there was no knife, but that was just about the last thing on their mind.
“What happens to all the leftovers?” Kaden couldn’t help but ask as they looked up to Mathias once more. Despite the food nearly falling off their own plate, it had barely made a dent in the many courses that covered the table. Mathias offered them a small smirk, fingers plucking up his own fork and spearing a green bean.
“Food from our plates is will be used as compost, while all untouched matter will be at the disposal of my staff, if they wish to enjoy,” the man stated, his tone carrying an air of finality as he brought his fork to his lips. “Go on, eat. You’ll need all the strength you can get.”
Kaden didn’t like the way his tone settled in the back of their mind, heavy and foreboding. They certainly didn’t like the way he smirked, lounging back in his chair.
Suddenly, the food didn’t look as appetizing.

Film Project - Week 4-6
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1pm8pHm5VDb_m-m-4lgjCcXpciGIrP1pLj1Lo8v_UUsc/edit?usp=sharing
Exercise 3
Tumblr media
Analysing how a change in aspect ratio affects our perception of a space/feeling. I think we’re starting to get somewhere... Again, not totally happy, mainly due to the inconsistency in the colour palette and I find that there isn’t the best sense of space throughout the shots. BUT, I am happy with some stuff - the close-ups are nicely lit and framed, I think and they convey the grimy, dull focused feeling of a late-night study session.
Tumblr media
I wanted to create this idea of finding someone alone in a space almost surprisingly, from a voyeuristic perspective, so we start off with these details of the space and then her presence invades the frame and we take notice of her. I staged Zoe in a tucked away corner of the Kilby to emphasise the emptiness, and create these long leading lines in the wide angle shot.
Tumblr media
I tried to use this exercise to also test out some ideas I’ve had for Longboard Nights. As it’s going for a high-concept, spectacle feeling, I wanted to see how widescreen aspect ratio would add to this idea. The vague, but telling, compliment of “cinematic” was used a couple times by the class when talking about the widescreen shots compared with the 16:9 shots. I agree, I think the shots in widescreen add a lot to the space and the feeling of the images, emphasising the expanse of emptiness and, as Andrew said, also made the use of negative space feel more deliberate. So I think it is something we want to use for Longboards... Still kinda unsure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Film Project Development
The other thing I was testing out in this exercise was this grimy green/yellow colour palette paired with a wide angle lense. This is the approach I want for the bathroom scene in Longboards. The colour palette and lenses is something I’ve been talking to Ben a lot about in terms of their metaphoric/subtextual purpose. The bathroom scene is the peak of the film, where Alex is confronting her past and talking it through with her friend. She’s feeling insecure and scared, on loose footing after being reminded of her father and getting her friend hurt. So, the warping of the room and her face makes her seem sickly and uncomfortable while the yellows have connotations of insecurity and cowardice, showing Alex’s mental state. At the start of this week, I began testing lighting and camera set-ups for the scenes. I shot a reference for the bathroom scene, with the lighting and lense choices I’ve talked about.
Tumblr media
This scene will be handheld, so I can use these slight dutch angles easily and inconsistently throughout, to add to the fear and discomfort. This edge light paired with the ultra soft wrap around bounce allows us to totally see our character, one of the first shots of Alex without dark shadows on the face. She’s exposed in this moment so we want her to have nowhere to hide in these shots, getting right up in her face with a wide angle lense. I love the way the 14mm looks - the warping isn’t as extreme as I would have originally wanted but, I actually prefer this slightly more subtle look. The close-focus is excellent and the lense flaring is also quite nice - very soft. For this I used a 1.2k HMI, a couple gels plus trace frame, a LEDgo and the natural bounce that occurs in the chapel. For the actual shoot, I think a 650w would give the right amount of light to bounce around the small bathroom. The light would be outside, with diffusion taped to the outside of the window and instead of the LED, I will be using the practical lights that are built into the bathroom mirror that I noticed during our recce. I’m also considering, depending on the amount of bounce I get on set, to flag off the wall behind camera as negative fill, to remove some of the bounce straight on to the face. I’m really happy with this test and am confident I can make the bathroom scene look and feel the way the story needs it to.
I also tested the lighting plan for the garage scene - high contrast, isolating, red lighting.
Tumblr media
I first tested the ECU’s we have planned for the exercising/flashback montage. these were quite simple, using one large light with red gel and light diffusion. The one thing I added was the shutter angle, shooting 360 degree gives this gorgeous amount of motion blur. I think this will be the shutter angle for the whole film, I really like the abstracting effect and the emphasis of the speed of movement. It also gives me more exposure when shooting these dark scenes with only one or two lights without having to bump up the ISO, a mistake I won’t make twice with that bloody URSA. I tested the close-up as well, this time adding an LED for an eye-light.
Tumblr media
This one I’m less happy with - need more shadows on the face! I didn’t have it booked out, but I should’ve added in some negative fill on the left side to counteract the bounce off the walls. But the edge light works really well on the face and the eye-light is doing wonders, just might need to be a bit brighter in the final scene. For the actual scene, I plan on using (again, one trick pony) the 650w with a triple-layer red gel and a trace frame and an LED, motivated by the projector used in the scene. There is also a practical fluorescent tube light in the location that I want to use, with a couple layers of ND and red gel that we can have in the shot to add a bit more depth and motivate the lighting. These are all shot on the 50mm which I plan to stick with for the shoot as it gives a nice feeling of tightness without a lot of depth compression. Again, feeling confident when it comes to lighting and shooting this scene.
The pitch could’ve gone better I think - lots of ideas thrown out without the clearest angle through them. But the feedback given has helped us hone in to the core of the story and streamline our script.
Tumblr media
For Natalia’s project, I’m getting more set up. We have a recce on Monday which I will be taking a mixer to so I can start building the sound library I want to use for the film. With my sound work on this film, I’m trying to get the specificities of the location into the film, with close recordings of small details and wider recordings of a whole place’s ambience. I’m excited to start getting my tools together and have more discussions with Nat about my ideas. The pitch was far more cohesive for this project, maybe only having our director and producer pitching kept it more focused.
Anyways, exciting week ahead, starting to shot list/storyboard with Ben, starting recording for Nat and doing tests for the grad film I’m working on. Busy, busy, busy.

Luxury Bathroom Renovation in Doreen: Tips for Creating Your Dream Oasis
Tumblr media
When it comes to home renovations, the bathroom often gets overlooked. However, a luxury bathroom can significantly enhance your home’s value and provide a serene retreat from the daily grind. If you’re in Doreen and looking to create your dream oasis, here are some tips to guide you through a successful luxury bathroom renovation.
1. Define Your Vision
Before diving into a renovation, take some time to define your vision. Consider the styles you are drawn to, such as modern, traditional, or rustic. Browse through home design magazines, websites, and social media platforms like Pinterest and Instagram to gather inspiration. Creating a mood board can help you visualize your desired aesthetic and guide your choices.
Key Elements to Consider:
Color Palette: Choose calming colors that evoke a sense of tranquility. Soft whites, muted pastels, or deep earthy tones can create a relaxing atmosphere.
Materials: Opt for high-quality materials like marble, granite, or high-end ceramics for a luxurious feel. Don’t forget to consider textures, such as smooth finishes or matte surfaces, to add depth to your design.
2. Focus on Layout
A well-planned layout is crucial for maximizing space and functionality. In a luxury bathroom, consider the following:
Space Optimization: If you have a larger space, consider adding a double vanity, a separate shower and bathtub area, or even a dedicated seating area.
Flow and Accessibility: Ensure that the layout allows for smooth movement and accessibility, particularly around the shower, bathtub, and toilet areas.
Tips for a Functional Layout:
Create Zones: Divide the bathroom into distinct zones for washing, grooming, and relaxation. This enhances functionality and adds an element of organization.
Consider a Floating Vanity: A floating vanity can create the illusion of more space and give your bathroom a modern look.
3. Select Luxurious Fixtures
The fixtures you choose can significantly impact the overall feel of your bathroom. Invest in high-quality, stylish fixtures to elevate the space.
Essential Fixtures to Consider:
Bathtub: A freestanding soaking tub can serve as a stunning centerpiece. Consider options with spa-like features, such as jets or aromatherapy.
Shower: A rainfall showerhead, wall-mounted fixtures, or a multi-function shower system can enhance your shower experience. Consider incorporating built-in shelves or seating for added comfort.
Vanity and Sink: Choose a statement vanity with elegant cabinetry and a high-end sink. Vessel sinks or under-mount sinks can add a contemporary touch.
4. Invest in High-End Materials
Luxury is often defined by the materials used. Consider these options to create a high-end look:
Countertops: Choose natural stone countertops, like granite or quartz, for durability and elegance. They can serve as a focal point and enhance the overall aesthetic.
Flooring: Heated floors are a luxurious touch that adds comfort. Options like porcelain tiles, natural stone, or even high-end vinyl can provide both beauty and practicality.
5. Lighting is Key
Good lighting is essential in any bathroom, but luxury bathrooms often require layers of light to enhance the overall ambiance.
Lighting Tips:
Ambient Lighting: Install recessed lighting or ceiling fixtures for overall illumination.
Task Lighting: Ensure there is adequate lighting around mirrors and vanity areas. Wall sconces can provide flattering light for grooming tasks.
Accent Lighting: Use LED strip lights under cabinets or around the bathtub to create a calming glow.
6. Incorporate Smart Technology
Incorporating smart technology can enhance convenience and elevate your bathroom experience. Consider:
Smart Showers: Control water temperature and flow with digital controls.
Automated Lighting: Use motion sensors or programmable lighting systems for hands-free operation.
Heated Floors and Towel Warmers: These features add an extra layer of luxury and comfort.
7. Add Personal Touches
While luxury is important, personal touches will make the space truly yours. Consider incorporating elements that reflect your personality and lifestyle.
Personalization Ideas:
Art and Decor: Select artwork or decor items that resonate with you. Consider framed prints, sculptures, or decorative trays for a polished look.
Plants and Greenery: Incorporate plants for a fresh touch. Low-maintenance options like succulents or ferns can thrive in a bathroom environment.
Luxury Linens: Invest in high-quality towels and bath mats for a spa-like feel. Choose colors and textures that complement your overall design.
8. Consider Professional Help
Finally, while DIY renovations can be fulfilling, hiring professionals can ensure your luxury bathroom renovation goes smoothly. Consider enlisting the help of:
Interior Designers: They can help you develop a cohesive design that aligns with your vision and functionality needs.
Contractors: Skilled contractors will ensure the renovation is completed to a high standard, meeting building codes and regulations.
Plumbers and Electricians: Professional installation of plumbing fixtures and lighting can prevent issues down the line.
Conclusion
Renovating your bathroom into a luxurious oasis in Doreen is an exciting endeavor that requires careful planning and attention to detail. By defining your vision, focusing on layout, investing in high-quality materials and fixtures, and incorporating personal touches, you can create a space that not only enhances your home’s value but also provides a tranquil escape for years to come.

Light plays an essential role in creating an illusion of space; thus, a good idea is the installation of some strategically chosen mirrors and lights that more naturally can be combined to make the dramatic effect of bathrooms bigger and more inviting. Why Bathroom LED Mirrors Are a Game-Changer for Your Routine
You would ideally start and end your day in the bathroom. So why not make this space an invigorating and refreshing one? Bathroom LED Mirrors could be the answer to a more modernized morning routine and a better bathroom experience. They promise bright, clear lighting and extra features that make getting ready easier and fun. In this blog post, we will explore how LED mirrors will benefit your morning routine.
Tumblr media
Bright and Clear Lighting
Bathroom LED mirrors come with bright and even lighting, thus making the perfect mirrors for makeup, shaving, or brushing. Unlike other mirrors carrying terrible lighting, LED mirrors provide balanced light illuminating your face but never casts any shadows on it. This is also very helpful when doing detailed work, like in shaping the brows or application of skincare. When you have good views of everything going on, you will look great as well as avoid all those mistakes that might happen, like unevenly done makeup and missed spots when shaving.
Energy Efficient and Eco-Friendly
In LED mirrors bathroom, one of its best features is the energy efficiency that it can give. LEDs consume a considerably smaller amount of electricity compared to other lighting. Thus, saving energy and lowering energy bills. One of the main reasons to replace a traditional light bulb with an LED light for controlling carbon footprint and consequently reducing consumption is saving electricity; since they tend to last longer than other types of light bulbs. You will feel elated knowing that with this high-quality LED mirror, you are taking the initiative to make your lifestyle more sustainable.
Convenience due to fog-free mirrors
You can step out of a hot shower and glance in the mirror-entirely clear mist. Most LED bathroom mirrors come with anti-fog technology, so you never have to wipe your mirror down before using it. Any person who has ever had his mirrors fog up after a shower knows all too well how irritating it can be to sit for whatever time is needed, or to smear it away with a towel-creating streaks for the next application. With the help of fog-free LED mirrors, such frustration is eliminated. It's a convenient feature that makes a vast difference in your daily routine.
Sleek Modern Look
The LED mirrors are not only helpful but also fashionable. Their slick, modern design can create a glow of their own in the bathroom, giving a feeling of luxury. You can have your choices in different shapes and sizes for an LED mirror so that it perfectly suits your style and even the decor of your bathroom. Be it a larger rectangular mirror or a round minimalistic one, these LED mirrors add elegance to any room. Aesthetic appeal aside, LED mirrors can also make a small bathroom look bigger. The bright light blended with the reflective mirror gives the impression that it is more spacious.
Additional Features
Many bathroom LED mirrors offer additional features that may make your morning routine, which now often means bath time, a bit easier to handle. Some models feature touch controls so that you can set the lights at various intensity levels using just a tap of your finger. There are other models that include built-in clocks, Bluetooth speakers, or even just temperature displays, thus keeping you on track while getting ready. A clock keeps track of time so you won't be late. The availability of Bluetooth speakers allows you to listen to music, podcasts, or just an update on the news while getting ready.
