Planning Your Kitchen Renovation: A Guide to New Homeowners
Renovating a kitchen is among the most exciting and rewarding home improvement projects. It enhances the aesthetics and functionality of one of the most essential rooms in your home and adds significant value to your property. However, a kitchen renovation requires careful planning and consideration to ensure a successful outcome. This comprehensive guide will explore the key steps and considerations in planning your kitchen renovation, from setting a budget to selecting materials and appliances.
1. Assess Your Needs and Goals
The first step in planning your kitchen renovation is to assess your current kitchen and determine what you want to achieve with the Renovation. Consider your lifestyle, cooking habits, and the specific needs of your household. Do you need more storage space, better lighting, or upgraded appliances? Are you looking to create an open-concept layout or incorporate a kitchen island for additional seating and workspace? Identifying your needs and goals and visiting a local bath and kitchen showroom will help guide your decisions throughout the renovation process.
2. Set a Budget
Setting a realistic budget is crucial for any renovation project. Determine how much you will spend on your kitchen renovation and allocate funds for different aspects, such as cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring, and labor. Including a contingency fund for unexpected expenses during the Renovation is essential. Having a clear budget will help you make informed choices and avoid overspending.
3. Create a Design Plan
Once you have a budget, it's time to create a design plan for your new kitchen. Consider the layout, style, and color scheme best suited to your home and personal taste. Consider the space's functionality and flow, including the placement of appliances, cabinets, and work areas. Consider consulting with a kitchen designer to help create a kitchen design plan that maximizes space and efficiency. They provide valuable insights and suggestions to enhance the overall design.
4. Choose Your Materials and Finishes
Selecting suitable materials and finishes is crucial to the kitchen renovation process. Your chosen materials will impact your kitchen's durability, functionality, and appearance.
Consider the following elements:
Cabinets: Decide on your cabinets' style, material, and color. Options range from classic wood cabinets to sleek, modern designs.
Countertops: Choose a countertop material that suits your cooking needs and aesthetic preferences. Popular options include granite, quartz, marble, and butcher block.
Backsplash: The backsplash is a great opportunity to add personality and style to your kitchen. Consider materials like ceramic tiles, glass, or natural stone.
Flooring: Select a durable and easy-to-clean flooring material, such as tile, hardwood, or laminate.
Fixtures and Hardware: Choose faucets, handles, and other hardware that complement your kitchen's style.
5. Select Appliances and Fixtures
Appliances and fixtures play a significant role in your kitchen's functionality. Consider energy-efficient appliances that meet your cooking needs and fit within your budget. Essential appliances include the refrigerator, stove, oven, dishwasher, and microwave. Additionally, consider the type of sink and faucet you want to install and any additional features like a pot filler or a garbage disposal.
6. Plan for Lighting
Lighting is an important aspect of the overall kitchen design that can significantly affect the ambiance and functionality of the space. Consider a combination of task lighting, accent lighting, and ambient lighting to create an inviting kitchen. Under-cabinet lighting is excellent for illuminating countertops, while pendant lights over an island can provide both task lighting and a decorative element. Remember to include dimmer switches to control the lighting intensity and create the desired mood.
7. Hire a Professional Contractor
Hiring a professional contractor is essential for ensuring the quality and success of your kitchen renovation. A skilled contractor can manage the project, coordinate with subcontractors, and ensure the work is completed to code and on schedule. When choosing a contractor, research and ask for references from past clients. Ensure you get a written contract outlining the scope of work, timeline, and payment schedule.
8. Prepare for the Renovation
Before the Renovation begins, prepare your home and family for construction. Set up a temporary kitchen in another area of your home, and plan meals that require minimal preparation. Protect your furniture and household items from dust and debris, and establish a clear communication plan with your contractor to stay informed about the project's progress.
9. Monitor the Progress
Throughout the Renovation, stay involved and monitor the progress of the work. Communicate with your contractor to address any changes or concerns. Being proactive and attentive will help ensure the project stays on track and meets your expectations.
10. Enjoy Your New Kitchen
Once the Renovation is complete, take the time to enjoy and appreciate your new kitchen. A well-designed and functional kitchen can enhance your daily life and provides a beautiful cooking, dining, and entertaining space.
Planning your kitchen renovation requires careful consideration and attention to detail. You can achieve the kitchen of your dreams by assessing your needs, setting a budget, creating a design plan, and choosing quality materials and appliances. With the help of a professional contractor and a well-thought-out plan, your kitchen renovation can be a rewarding and successful experience that adds value and enjoyment to your home.

How to Stay on Budget During Your Summer Kitchen or Bath Renovation
Embarking on a kitchen or bath renovation project during the summer can be exciting yet daunting. The allure of a revamped space that reflects your style and enhances functionality is hard to resist. However, the cost of these renovations can quickly escalate if not carefully managed. Staying on budget is crucial to ensure the project is financially viable and manageable. Here are some strategies to help you stay on budget during your summer kitchen or bath renovation.
1. Plan Meticulously
The proper foundation of a successful renovation project is thorough planning. Begin by outlining your renovation goals. Determine which features are essential and which are optional. Create a detailed plan including design concepts for fixtures, such as Kohler smart toilets, materials, labor costs, and timelines. The more detailed your plan, the less likely you will encounter unexpected expenses.
2. Set a Realistic Budget
Establishing a realistic budget is crucial. Research the average costs of similar projects in your area to understand what to expect. Factor in all potential expenses, including labor, permits, materials, and a contingency fund for unexpected costs. Be honest about what you can afford and prioritize spending on areas that add the most value to your home.
3. Always Choose Quality
While it may be tempting to splurge on high-end materials and fixtures, balancing quality and cost is essential. Choose materials that offer durability and aesthetic appeal without breaking the bank. For example, instead of choosing expensive natural stone countertops, consider quartz or laminate, which can provide a similar look at a fraction of the cost.
4. Get Multiple Quotes
When hiring contractors, obtain quotes from at least three different professionals. This will give you a better idea of the market rate and help you avoid overpaying. Ensure that each quote includes a detailed breakdown of the costs so you can make an informed comparison. Don’t automatically choose the lowest bid; consider the contractor’s reputation and experience.
5. Be Flexible with Design
Flexibility in design can help you stay on budget. If your initial design plan exceeds your budget, be open to making adjustments. For instance, you might opt for semi-custom or stock cabinets instead of custom cabinetry. Similarly, you can achieve a high-end look with more affordable materials and fixtures by focusing on thoughtful design and creative solutions.
6. Shop Smart
Use sales, discounts, and wholesale stores to purchase materials and fixtures at lower prices. Look for clearance items or last season’s designs, which can offer significant savings without compromising style. Consider buying gently used or refurbished items from resale shops or online marketplaces.
7. Monitor Expenses Closely
Make sure to keep track of all expenses throughout the renovation process. Use a spreadsheet or budgeting app to monitor spending and compare it against your budget. Regularly reviewing your costs will help you identify where you might be overspending and allow you to make adjustments before it’s too late.
8. Plan for the Unexpected
Despite careful planning, unexpected costs can still arise. Allocate at least 10-15% of your budget for contingencies. This will provide a financial cushion for unforeseen expenses, such as hidden water damage or structural issues, ensuring your project stays on track even when surprises occur.
Following these strategies, you can successfully manage your summer kitchen or bath renovation project without exceeding your budget. The key is to plan meticulously, make informed decisions, visit a bath and kitchen showroom in Collegeville, and stay disciplined throughout the process. With careful budgeting, you can transform your space into a beautiful and functional area that enhances your home’s value and quality of life.

I love weird, unusual, what-was-the-architect-thinking houses, and this 1966 stone house in Sublette, KS not only has 3bds, 3ba, 2,736 sq ft, but it can be yours for $499k.
Two-story entrance hall with stone pillars, stone floor, ledges, wood paneling, plank ceilings, and carpeted stairs. The keyword here is "texture."
In true mid-century modern fashion, there's a conversation pit around a fireplace. However, all of the walls are stone, the windows are round, and the fireplace is unconventional in design.
The rest of the living room. I'm not understanding why there are doors and then one pillar away there's a large opening, that they've blocked with a table. The primary bedroom is also open, but has large sliding doors.
The living room and rounded bedroom have carpeted flooring.
The main bath has a long entrance lined with closets.
At the end of the closet hall there's a sunken tub with original tile. Look at the little tile mural in the wall, too.
Then here, there's a family room with a corner fireplace. Note the niches in the walls.
In the middle, there's a large area with a dramatic focal point. There's an opening and a fountain, so I would imagine that you can sit in there. Large light above- not sure if it's a skylight or a light fixture.
This view reminds me of a furniture showroom.
So, the kitchen is nice. It looks like it's open to a patio.
The cabinetry is lovely and there's plenty storage.
Going up the stairs, I like the railing.
The 2nd bedroom is up here and it's also got a wide opening. Both bedrooms seem to have very large sliding doors that close for privacy.
This must be used as a guest room b/c it has a luggage rack. Love that desk.
But check out the little guest house.
It has a large fireplace, bed, and room for a sitting area.
The bath is small, but it has a large closet.
Large private walled patio with a pergola is at the back of the house.

My little girl loves to play kitchen in her little wooden kitchen with her wooden toys, her wood food and wood plates. She even cleans it like mama with the little towel she has, everyday. She "bathes" her toys in the sink even though it has no water. It's a delight to see her.
It's so funny, because my mother in law came today and she was so outraged we gave her a kitchen. She is a respectful person and doesn't say it out loud, but also, she is not a very conscious person so I can see all her opinions on her gestures. Oh dear grandma, it's such a pity you missed the joy in all this.
The joy of doing domestic things everyday, to transform every little moment of your routine into a blessing. The joy of creating beauty in everything you use, to create delicious food that nourishes your body and your soul and to have the pleasure to do it with beautiful tools, with beautiful plates, with a beautiful kitchen decorated to your taste.
My kitchen is showroom of art, of efficiency, of mastery and skills, a blending of love and hability so intricate you cannot distinguish where one ends and I'm so proud of all of it.
And my little one, my little one is learning on that too. ❤️❤️❤️

[to the tune of Tom Cardy's Big Breakfast]
I don't regret ordering the BIG BATH TUB I know I'll feel so good when I'm... INSIDE THE BIG BATH TUB
OKAY SO if you've read anything I've ever written you might be aware that I have a deep and abiding love of a Big Bathtub. Tragically, this was something I did not have access to in my personal life, as the house we bought had a baby tub for babies who don't like baths. Seriously, this thing was 15" tall on the outside and maybe had 12" of soaking depth if you were lucky. I still took baths, but I complained about it the whole time.
No more.
Now I have Big Bathtub!!!! Look at it! LOOK AT IT!!! I can get my boobs AND my knees underwater at the same time! I'm gonna be making cauldrons of lady soup in there! My 6'1" wife is gonna be able to take baths and be comfortable!
If you can't find me, look for me in the Big Bathtub.
(Don't look for me.)
"Scarlett!" I hear you (a rhetorical device) saying, "I love that for you, but I am also jealous! How do I get a Big Bathtub of my very own?"
Well, my friend, if there's one thing I love more than Big Bathtub, it is oversharing about home improvement projects.
SPECIFIC MONEY TALK TO FOLLOW
Given how absolutely fucking impossible it is to find any guidance online about how much this shit costs when you're just starting the research, I'll start here: This cost us $11,466.16 and took two days to install. We live in a very high COL area, and from what other research I did and estimates we got, $10-12k was about what we could expect to pay for a new bathtub and shower surround that wasn't The Same Fiberglass Shit We Already Had, AND we would have had to bring in multiple contractors.
Some necessary background: My wife and I bought our house about eleven years ago, when house prices in Seattle were at a historic low. My mom gifted us money for the down payment, which was a huge privilege, but if she gifted us the same amount of money now it would buy us precisely jack and shit. We have the stability we have due to a rare combination of privilege and luck, and I am grateful for it literally every day.
The incredibly low price we bought this house at also allowed us to manage to stay afloat through our last seven-ish years of chronic under-employment. I won't get deeply into the details, but we spent a lot of time in a place where buying myself a package of nice butter was a luxury I had to plan for. A little over a year ago my wife got a really good job (after a year of unemployment) and this summer I got a much-overdue promotion at my day job and a significant raise! Between those two things, we've finally been in a place where we can save money for house projects instead of going into debt for them, which still seems like a fucking miracle! It hasn't gotten old yet! I don't know if it ever will!
Flush on that success, earlier this this fall I got quotes for an addition on the house (something we've wanted almost since we moved in, since it's 800 square feet and has just the one tiny bathroom) and learned it would cost AT LEAST 150% MORE than we paid for this house in the first place!!! Like we could buy a whole-ass house in a cheaper area for the cost of adding on to this one! HAHAHAHA NO!! 😭😬
After a couple days of crushing disappointment I decided this meant we could pursue smaller improvements to make the house we have into a house we love, and first on the list was Big Bathtub!
Being generally handy people (ask about the shed my wife built sometime) we looked at buying a nice tub at a showroom and having a plumber install it, but plumbers don't install shower surrounds. Okay, so we figured we could probably install a shower surround? And my dad (a retired general contractor) could help? But this isn't a kitchen counter, this is a bathroom, and in this house we don't fuck with stuff that need waterproofing. We decided we wanted someone who could handle the whole thing, so I requested quotes from remodel contractors but they all told me my project was too small!
Enter Bath Planet. They're a one-stop shop that does custom full bath surround installs with a ton of options. The sales guy who did the estimate had color and material samples with him and dug through all the options to get me the deepest bathtub possible. This sucker's 22" tall! The cost included wrapping the entire window so the sill would be waterproof! If there was damage to the subfloor, they'd repair it before installing the tub at no additional cost! The warranty is really good!
(Oh man I've become such an adult.)
Not gonna lie, the quoted price was 😬😬😬 when he was done, but we couldn't argue with the quality or convenience and we were looking at a cost of close to $7k if we bought a big tub, had a plumber installed it, and then DIYed the surround (with no guarantees about how long that would make our only bathroom unusable!) so we bit the bullet and put down a deposit.
In related news, my wife and I are giving each other very few presents this Christmas, since the tub was our main gift 😂 Our savings are... Very depleted right now, so we're gonna have to hunker down for a few months to rebuild before we can think about any other house projects or expensive fun stuff, but what we lack in money, we make up for in bathtub!
As far as the timeline went, we got the initial quote on 9/20, put down our deposit that day, and then the install happened over 12/6 and 12/7. The installer was great, the work happened exactly as it was supposed to, and now we have BIG BATHTUB.
This was a wall of text, I know! If anyone has questions I didn't answer here, though, I'm happy to answer them. It's so rough trying to find home reno information out on the wide internet, and contractor websites are worse than useless for the purpose.
Meanwhile, I will be in the Big Bathtub.

What should I look for in a custom cabinet maker?
If you’re in the market for new kitchen cabinets, bath vanities or any other cabinetry project, it’s important to choose a reputable company. A bad choice could result in a shoddy product and an unsatisfactory experience.
The right cabinet maker will take accurate measurements and use modern software to make precision cuts, design and construction. This intimate process ensures that no details are missed and that the finished product lives up to your expectations.
A good cabinet maker will seek your approval on things such as color, molding and other details during the design stage. This will keep you from having to go through a second round of changes and save you time and money in the long run.
Choosing the right cabinet materials is also key to achieving a quality result. A well-built cabinet will be made using woods and boards that are strong enough to stand up to wear and tear over the years.
For example, a custom cabinet maker can recommend a type of case construction that uses low-pressure laminate, melamine or veneer core plywood instead of face-frame construction that requires a frame around the front or face of the cabinet box.
It’s also important to consider if the custom cabinet maker has their own showroom where they show off their work. This can be a good indicator of how well they understand their craft and what they’re capable of, in terms of craftsmanship.
If you are looking for the same, Contact Cabernet Kitchen & Fine Cabinetry, a top notch custom cabinet maker in Vaughan.

The Power of Showrooms for Bath, Kitchen, and Plumbing Supply Needs
In the age of digital convenience, where online shopping is the norm, the charm of a physical showroom might seem nostalgic. However, when sourcing for your bath, kitchen, and plumbing needs, local showrooms are not just places to display products; they are immersive experiences that redefine how we envision and choose items for our homes. Let's delve into why showrooms are compelling for locally sourcing these essential elements.
Sensory Engagement
Showrooms provide a sensory experience that online platforms can't replicate. When selecting fixtures for your bath or kitchen, being able to touch faucets, feel the texture of tiles, or test the sturdiness of cabinets becomes crucial. Local showrooms offer a hands-on experience, allowing customers to engage their senses before making decisions.
Expert Guidance
One of the significant advantages of local showrooms is the presence of knowledgeable staff. Unlike online purchases, where you rely on product descriptions, in a showroom, you can consult with experts who understand the intricacies of plumbing, kitchen layouts, and bathroom designs. Their insights can be invaluable in making informed choices tailored to your specific needs.
Get Inspiration in Real Spaces
Showrooms often present products in real-life settings, inspiring how these items might look in your home. You can walk through kitchen setups, experience bathroom vignettes, and visualize how different elements come together. This hands-on exploration sparks creativity and helps you envision the outcome.
Sustainable Choices
With an increasing focus on sustainability, many local showrooms champion eco-friendly kitchen remodeling ideas and products. Seeing and touching these items fosters a deeper understanding of their environmental impact. From water-saving faucets to energy-efficient appliances, showrooms can be a hub for sourcing products that align with your commitment to sustainability.
Building Community Connections
Choosing local showrooms is a way to invest in your community. These establishments contribute to the local economy; supporting them, you help maintain vibrant, diverse retail spaces. Additionally, establishing relationships with local suppliers and artisans can lead to a network of trusted resources for future home projects.
Seamless Integration of Technology
While emphasizing the tangible benefits, many showrooms must catch up in the tech department. They integrate digital tools like virtual or augmented reality to enhance the customer experience. This technology lets you see how products will fit into your space and make more informed decisions.
In the quest for bath, kitchen, and plumbing supplies, Broomall's bath & kitchen showroom in Broomall stands as a beacons of quality, expertise, and community connection. Beyond being spaces to buy products, they offer an immersive journey that engages your senses, nurtures creativity, and fosters a deeper understanding of your choices. So, the next time you embark on a home improvement project, consider the enriching experience that awaits you in the aisles of a local showroom.

@puppy-steve added this, and I want to add to it:
Things are a little uncomfortable at first. The Munsons don’t quite know how to make themselves at home in their new house, and Steve, despite his insistence that it’s their house, still feels a little territorial of it. It’s the house he grew up in. Hell, it’s practically been solely his house since freshman year, when his parents decided to start leaving him in Hawkins for months at a time. So, of course the plates go in the cupboard next to the oven, and the cleaning supplies goes in the downstairs coat closet that’s next to the half bath.
But he tries to remind himself that it’s technically their house now, and there’s no way they could have known where things go because the Harringtons had movers clear out all of their belongings, including Steve’s, which they had put in storage. (And moving all of that on top of the Munsons’ belongings in the middle of summer is hell on his still healing back, and could have been totally avoided if his parents had even thought for one second to call him. Although, he’s grateful that they even left his stuff behind for him. The Munsons were already having to build back from the ground up. Acquiring a third thrifted bedroom set on top of everything would have sent him over the edge.)
So, yeah, it takes all of the self-control and character development he feels like he’s gone through over the past few years to not bitch at Wayne when he wants to hang his mug collection from the hanging pot rack over the kitchen island or to tell Eddie, no, the pool house can’t be a smoking lounge, there’s too many toxic chemicals in there.
But it’s also really nice to have people making noise in the house again. And the Munsons’ decorating style is far superior than Tiffany Harrington’s showroom style. It actually starts to feel like a real home, with the comfy couch and the various chintzy knick-nacks, and the fading family photos in mismatched picture frames. It inspires him to repaper his room with a wallpaper that doesn’t make his migraines flare up.
Wayne takes his parents’ old bedroom, and Eddie sets up in Richard Harrington’s old office because he can’t quite make it up the stairs yet.
It’s nice having the two men around. Steve finally has someone to watch baseball with, and, although he refuses to admit it, he enjoys the racket Eddie and his band make out in the garage whenever Eddie’s finally feeling up to playing the guitar. When they get a big enough fold out table, Eddie starts hosting DND games, which means the kids come over more. And Wayne loves lounging on a pool float with a cold beer after work, so Steve finally has someone else to keep the pool clean for (and maybe he enjoys seeing Eddie in only his swim trunks, and he doesn’t yet want to confront why).
As the months wear on, they fall into a groove together. Soon, Eddie is healed enough to make his move up to the bigger bedrooms upstairs. But just because his wounds are mostly healed, doesn’t mean he’s stopped having nightmares. Steve hears him one night and goes into check on him because he knows how awful the post-Upside Down nightmares all, and they stay up all night talking. At first it’s about the Upside Down, then it’s about the kids, then their shared memories of high school, then their deepest and most personal hopes and regrets, and then because everything got dark and heavy again and they are well into the early hours of the morning, their conversation turns nonsensical and full of sleep-deprived giggles until they finally succumb to their fatigue. And when Wayne comes home from work, it’s to find them curled up in Eddie’s bed, having good dreams for once.
They don’t mean for it to become a thing, but the next night, the two of them are hanging out in Steve’s room chatting about everything and nothing until they fall asleep again, and it just. keeps. happening. It doesn’t matter if they are in one or another’s bed or on the floor or even on the couch, whenever they have their nightly conversations, they always end up sleeping curled up into each other’s sides. And it’s definitely not intentional. They just keep finding ways to drag out their conversations, or Steve was watching a baseball game, or Eddie was reading aloud to him, or the album is better listened to with eyes closed, or—
Okay, so maybe it’s intentional.
It takes a full month of these excuses and near sleepless nights and miserable early morning shifts after said sleepless nights, until they’re finally ready to admit that maybe sleeping side by side is actually what they want. Then it takes another week and a half for them to realize and admit that they want to sleep together. Before they know it, they’re hopelessly in love.
By the time Christmas rolls around, they are a fully domesticated couple that pretty much the entire town knows about because they are almost always together and just can’t seem to keep their hands off of each other in public (seriously, does a deli trip really necessitate holding hands the entire time?). And the neighbors who were cold to them before—because they’re a bunch of rich snobs who resent the fact that “trailer trash” moved into the neighborhood—go out of their way to avoid the town queers. And although Wayne hates that people feel some type of way about his boys, honestly, he’s relieved that they’ve finally stopped pretended to be nice to him and coming up to talk to him when he just wants to garden in peace.
This kind of got away from me, but just..the three of them living together and building a home.
Eddie and Wayne getting not just any house post-vecna, but the Harrington house itself. Steve's parents were selling it to any buyer, govt took it and threw it at the munsons as part of their hush money.
Steve's in the middle of getting evicted and he's miserable but then shock! eddie and wayne invite him to live with them! and so on and so forth...
