hate that I have to clarify whenever I think of two characters as having a powerful and purely platonic bond as "just friends". like I have to say that but they are not "just" anything.

did you hear me. I said they are friends. not brothers or siblings or maternal or paternal or any other familially-defined relationship. they are friends!!! do you know how powerful that is??? they! are! friends!!! they are FRIENDS

I think another aspect of conservative thought people need to understand is the idea that it's all about dominance.

The reason why sayings like "we don't want to trans your kids, we want trans kids to live" is because, in the conservative mind, you are replacing their dominance with your own. It can never be about what is best for others, it is always about expressing absolute power and control.

Natural selection, at its ideal, will weed out the people who "shouldn't live." If their existence is a threat to the already-established hierarchy, then it's obvious that they shouldn't exist in order to challenge hierarchy.

While this certainly isn't a "conservative-only" mindset, it's a trend I have noticed more in conservative spaces. This is why I don't always think it's helpful to go on about how, "Oh, we don't want to threaten your worldview. We just want people to live 😊". You will fundamentally be threatening their power in their minds. Therefore, nothing you say can truly take away from the anxiety, fear, and anger at losing control that may be instilled.

Finished a whole playthrough of Mask of the Rose a few days ago, need to make my way to a certain ending of The Silver Tree, please...

on one side of my apartment, my building hallway reeks of wet dog. on the other side, my balcony neighbor is smoking pot, and the smell seeps into my apartment. my poor scented candle can't keep up. I think this is one of those days I need to leave and not come back until the sun sets.

the little reveal at the end was fun and while the last couple of fights weren't Too bad I could see them being some real bastards in a MD setting

if you can't win those clashes the inevitable sinking deluge is a ticking time bomb

appreciate that sinclair is growing a backbone and actually sort've getting a character, it's neat to see the characters that've had "their arc" and their emotional trauma handled sorta pull weight more

though it makes me wonder how high the stakes will get in later cantos if the majority of the cast end up like that

also rodion literally just like hauling off ishmael seems to imply she is pretty strong which I found interesting

:-) time to get a good ol baseball bat. tw for ??? just general like. home invasion?? stressful subject?? man idfk.  under the cut. 

over the weekend some fucker destroyed the lock that separates my apartment from my upstairs neighbors apartment. the guy took a screwdriver to it, and promptly ripped the screws out. he managed to get into my apt, didn’t steal or damage anything, but he messed with some of my stuff. entrance mat being all cattywumpus, kitchen utensils out of whack, etc. could have been worse. didn’t hear anything bcs I had earplugs + headphones at max volume in, as my neighbors were partying until fuckin 4:30 am. the guy who did this is... not one of my upstairs neighbors, but was a guest at their party. according to them, they saw him with the screwdiver, but didn’t bother stopping him from breaking the lock and entering my fucking apartment. cool.  

thank god I lock my bedroom/bathroom doors before going to sleep, so there’s that. I don’t know if he rattled my doorhandles, or tried to get into my bedroom-- he had a fucking screwdriver. he sure could have. don’t know if there were multiple people in my apartment either.

but I’m. not exactly enthused, or feeling safe in my own apt rn.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CASSANDRA CAIN!!!!!!!

For Cass' birthday, I'm gonna do a little dive into Cass and gift-giving! Not a super formal meta but just going through some significant moments where gifts are involved.

Cass' very first appearance in Batman #567 is a gift - she gives an apple to Barbara. The association with teachers and apples is of course apt, but it's also significant that Cass gives a gift for the first time. Gifts represent relationships, agency (choosing to give someone something), and ownership. In a way, gifts are the very opposite of her upbringing!

Then, in Azrael: Agent of the Bat #61, Babs explains gifts to both Cass and Azrael. I really like this set-up because, with Jean-Paul there, Cass is not made to feel like she's the only one who doesn't know. Here Babs leans into the relational aspects of gifts: "when you get a gift, or give one, you feel valued and... not alone."

In Batgirl #33, we really see that 'not alone' aspect. After a disastrous encounter with David Cain (where we learn Cass' birthday!!), Cass returns to her base dejected and sad. Then Bruce shows up and gives her a gift, and it cheers her up. We don't know what the gift is - the giving is what's important, showing how much Bruce cares for Cass (this is also, if I recall correctly, the first time we really see the word 'father' in association with Bruce).

Only four issues after Bruce gives her a gift, it's David Cain's turn; he gifts her a knife that he gave her before as a child. #37 is a heartwrenching issue, diving into Cass' relationship with Cain. In the end, she decides to destroy it, symbolising her desire to break off connection with him. In light of her acceptance of Bruce's gift, it's clear that gifts are incredibly important symbols of her relationships to people.

Skipping way ahead to Urban Legends #10, Cass gets Dick for Secret Santa and helps him out of a jam as a gift! I love how Dick is super grateful here, and I think it makes complete sense for Cass to do service-oriented gifts rather than purchasing something. Gift-giving will always be super special for Cass, but now she's getting used to casual, lower-stakes gifts, showing just how far she's come from her first introduction!!

But of course the major gift of her life is, and will always be, Batgirl. In Legends of the Dark Knight #120, it's the first gift she received from someone who isn't David Cain, and getting to wear that symbol - a symbol, to her, of compassion and redemption - is a step in overcoming her guilt and self-hatred. The fact it's presented as a gift (in a box) is also really important. "When you get a gift[...] you feel valued and... not alone." After years and years of wandering, Cass is finally gifted a home.

So happy birthday to Cassandra Cain, and may you get all the best gifts in the world!!!!! Here's to 2025 holding a lot more wonderful Cass things in store for us!!!

“always an angel, never a god” and making it about the robins with batman is heartbreaking and all but have you considered:

the robins to the previous robin.

robins 2-5 looking at robin 1. the hero worship, the love they have for dick grayson. they want to live up to “the golden boy” “the golden standard”. they want to make him proud.

but dick grayson himself? he looks at batman, in his eyes he doesn’t live up to his mentor. sure he thinks he’s good, but it’s not like he thinks he’s the best. to himself, he isn’t “the golden child”, he’s not “the golden standard”, there’s too many mistakes, too many sins, to make him view himself the way others view him

There's actually a time when Damian is feuding with Tim about something and he's like Grayson is the "Golden Child", Todd is the "Black Sheep", and you're something something. He didn't actually say "something something" but you get the point. Damian doesn't like to be forthcoming with his words, but - "We were the best, Richard. No matter what anyone thinks." THOSE WORDS CAME OUT OF HIS MOUTH. The fact that Damian literally calls him the golden child tho is literally ascending me. He loves his dad.

Jason gets fear-gassed once in Truth & Justice (2021) comic and it reveals that one his worst fears has always been about living up to the massive legacy Dick left behind. There's a change in the way Dick is portrayed because Jason is terrified of Nightwing, not Dick. Because he knows that Dick loves him and stuff but Nightwing is downright petrifiying. Because Nightwing and as Robin, Dick created the firsts for everything. The first partner, the first side-kick, the person who created their world. Not just Jason's but Dick opened up the gateway to Every. Single. Hero. That came after him. And he did it perfectly. He excelled in every aspect imaginable and then surpassed them to create the golden standard that every single person that came after strived to touch. Not just for what they should do, but who they should be.

Tim straight up tells Dick to his face every time that Dick is the best robin that ever existed. No squalms, no hesitation, it's just pure fact for Tim. There is simply, no one better.

Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War: Scorched Earth

Stephanie didn't have a lot of interactions with Dick and she wasn't close to him but she still had a huge deal of respect for him. It was almost deference, the way she treated him. I considered that it might be because he was Batman but she treated Batman very differently than she treated Dick!bats.

But despite literally every single Robin thinking how perfect Dick is, how unattainable he set the standards, Dick himself feels so pale in comparison to his mentor.

I wrote this post a long while back regarding Dick's thoughts of insecurities about bruce to the tune of Toxic Thoughts by Faith Marie which pretty much encapsulates all his worries. But the thing is, even Bruce tells dick how amazing he is and he's so much better than him, and he means it.

There's a time when Bruce fights each of his former robins and he takes them all down easily but he's trekking his way to the last one and he's says "Attack of the Robins, that leaves only the first one. Hand-to-hand, the toughest of them all." He says this all in his mind. Which means when he tells Dick he's better, he really means it but Dick? Dick will never, ever understand the weight of Bruce's sincerity towards him. He always thinks he's not a good enough leader, good enough detective, good enough whatever there is. In his mind he will never be good as Bruce in anyway because for him Bruce is the best person to ever exist. For him, despite everyone in the entire superhero community exalting him and singing his praises, he feels he'll never be like his hero.

But you know who this insecurity really affects more than him?

The Robins! Literally everyone else!

You know, there's actually panel about Roy that explains how he feels about Dick's insecurities towards Bruce-

And the reason why I brink it up is because I think this is exactly how Jason feels about Dick. In Jason's eyes there is no one better than Dick and it's a nasty feeling that the person he thinks it the best feels inferior to someone else.

Tim also has opinions on the same line except in his case, he hates Dick's unconditional loyalty towards Bruce (yes I'm referencing gotham knights). He loves Bruce but he hates that Dick loves him to the point that he'll follow him endlessly because he has this romanticized, rose-sunglasses view of Bruce. WHICH IRONICALLY ROY ALSO FEELS-

Where it bothers Roy and Jason that Dick would think anyone is better than him, it rankles Tim and Roy that he's being subservient to a mentor he's far better than.

He looks so tired, doing God's bidding. But this aligns perfectly with the fact that Bruce has a canonical god complex AKA consistently inflated feelings of personal ability, privilege, or infallibility. People who have god complexes are highly dogmatic in their views, meaning the person speaks of their personal opinions as though they were unquestionably correct.

Literally and metaphorically he's an actual angel because he works as a messenger of God (Bruce in the DC world) and is the epitome of goodness, someone who always offers comfort and aid to everyone.
