Maxie: it's funny to me that I've followed you long enough that "Benedict put this post on my dash" makes me immediately go "okay what are the chances that this is a feghoot" fuckin bo place effect Benedict: y'know that study failed to replicate across other monks it turns out that one monk was just so bad at self-defense that no matter what staff he used, there was no effect- he sucked either way. the experimenter only noticed better prowess when the monk thought he was using the right staff because he seemed more confident and that was the result he expected. monk kept trying to put his attackers' eyes out and failing every single time, so the experimenter couldn't objectively measure results and had to fall back on subjective judgment that's what happens when your study has no blinding Maxie: god. I can't really speak to Buddhist monks, though. I know more about Catholic ones. But, y'know - for all we tout Gregor Mendel and men like him, a lot of people don't know that there's a lot of problems with their research too Benedict: oh yeah? Maxie: It's kind of an institutional thing. Like, for someone to be a monk, they have to be willing to live a life there they're at least somewhat secluded from the general populace… a lot of them take particular vows, poverty or silence or what-have-you… especially in the middle ages and Renaissance, they lived according to a pretty strict schedule… all those things shape their worldview and the methods available to them Of course, a lot of people would say that the root of the problem is that a monk has to be 1. a grown man 2. in good standing with the Catholic Church, which not only ensures a certain worldview but also neccesitates that they undertake certain sacraments but I'm sure you already know about confirmation bias Benedict: FUCK

NBA Jam is one of those games that defined an era. Originally released in arcades in 1993 before making its way to home consoles, it brought basketball to a whole new level—not through realism, but through high-speed, over-the-top action. The Sega Genesis version delivers the core experience of 2-on-2 basketball with high-flying dunks, shoves, and no fouls, making every game a chaotic, fast-paced battle.
At its best, NBA Jam is pure arcade fun. The turbo meter adds a layer of strategy, rewarding smart energy management, while the "He's on fire!" mechanic can completely shift the momentum of a game. The exaggerated, gravity-defying slams are still satisfying to pull off, and the game's fast rhythm ensures there’s never a dull moment. It also nails the competitive aspect—whether you're playing against the AI or a friend, comebacks are always possible, keeping matches unpredictable.
That said, the game isn’t without its flaws. While the arcade version was more fluid, the Genesis port has stiffer controls, and at times, player movement feels slightly awkward. Shot accuracy isn’t always consistent, and rubberbanding can be frustrating when the AI suddenly decides to go on an unstoppable run. The roster, while strong for its time, lacks certain big names due to licensing issues—something that fans noticed even back then.
Still, despite its quirks, NBA Jam on Genesis holds up as one of the most entertaining basketball games of its generation. It might not be the definitive version, but it still delivers the fast, aggressive, and unapologetically arcade-style experience that made NBA Jam a legend. Whether you're looking for nostalgia or just a quick, intense basketball fix, it remains a solid pick—even with its imperfections.

NBA Jam 99
NA release: 3rd December 1998
PAL release: December 1998
JP release: N/A
Developer: Iguana
Publisher: Acclaim
N64 Magazine Score: 83%
After playing a few Basketball games on the N64, I don’t think that the proper rules of basketball translate very well to a video game. It’s focuses on blocking with any attempt to get the ball off an opponent counting as a foul. The standard mode of NBA Jam is not much fun.
Luckily, NBA Jam has a second mode (called Jam) that allows for a more arcade-like experience and the ability to tackle.
This mode is a lot more enjoyable, although not without major flaws. You can keep doing the same tactics again and again to score hoops, and the game seems to be aware this and comes up with its own solution to balance this: CPU players will score almost every time they try to score, while players you control will miss. A lot. Even if they’re on their own right next to the hoop.

NBA Jam is a competent sports game, with a couple of extra minigames also thrown in, but it doesn’t reach the level of NBA Courtside.
And then there’s the Jam mode, which has made the basketball videogame what it is today. Acclaim’s version isn’t as ‘crazee’ as others, but there’s still infinitely more fun to be had here than in ‘Simulation’ mode, or in NBA Hangtime.

Console Sports Games of 1994 - NBA Live '95
Released on the SNES and Sega Genesis in 1994, NBA Live '95 is the first entry in the NBA Live/Elite series of NBA licenced basketball games, like many early entries in this series it was not developed by EA, with this first entry being helmed by Hitmen Productions who also worked on the PGA Tour series until their closure sometime after the 1996 release of PGA Tour 97.

Episode 77 – Walking… no.. Driving On The Moon!
Greetings, and welcome to Episode 77! In this one, Brian reviews another arcade, breaks down a top ten list, and finishes up with a breakdown on Moon Patrol!
If you would like to contact the show, you can send an email at [email protected] or you can leave a voicemail for the show at 734-623-0832, just make sure to state which show you’re calling for.
You can fine the podcast wherever you listen to them. Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and iHeart Radio just to name a few. RSS Feed: https://anchor.fm/s/4481fd0/podcast/rss
The show also has a Facebook page, and is also on Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, TikTok (when I have videos) and Tumblr. All of these links can be found at https://linktr.ee/arcadeaddictbrian. I am also putting the back catalog on Youtube as well, a little bit at a time. Just search for arcadeaddictbrian or the podcast, and you will find them!
You can help the show by leaving a five-star review wherever you listen to it, which helps other people find it. If you want to help the show directly, go to https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coaa and click on the Donate button. For as little as a dollar a month, you can help the show develop further as a podcast, as I use those funds for things directly related to the show (buying podcasting and streaming equipment, and funding arcade runs to new locations to review). My deepest thanks to Kevin Hoffman and Benjamin Broedel for their continuing support! Without your help, I would not be in the position I’m in!
Now, for those who wish to donate and cannot do so through Spotify, I have a ko-fi page. Ko-fi.com/arcadeaddictbrian
I’m streaming live on Twitch. Twitch.tv/arcadeaddictbrian. If you’re a listener to the show, please do me a solid and drop me a follow over there. That helps grow the stream, and who knows, maybe I might become a big-time streamer! A guy can hope, right??
Discord server under the GamerNation Productions brand coming soon!
Hope to hear from you soon, and good gaming out there!

Review: NBA 2K25
The return of MyGM really only brings in additional dialogue and the office building, but the overall experience remains the same. This can also be said with the presentation aspect, which feels like it's just going through the motions at this point. Most importantly, NBA 2K25 is a lot of fun and a great basketball experience to play with friends and experience the current and past NBA.

NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC is often hailed as a spiritual successor to the iconic basketball games NBA Jam and NBA Hangtime, both of which were crafted by Midway. These titles share common gameplay mechanics, featuring exaggerated dunks, brisk action, and an overall more laid-back and entertaining approach to basketball.
Everything looks perfect on paper, but I can't help wondering where the competitiveness is. I mean, I've basically said the same thing about the game's console versions, and I'll say it again for the original: this title lacks depth, and more involved gameplay would have been highly appreciated.
Twenty-four years have passed since its release, and I find myself contemplating how a highly anticipated game like this could be made so accessible, rendering its gameplay virtually non-existent. Upon revisiting the game after twenty-one years, it took me merely half a quarter to reacquaint myself and effortlessly secure a victory on my first try.
While defending poses some challenges, the real perplexity lies in the offensive aspect. I found myself able to execute virtually anything I desired; I missed only a handful of 3-point shots, and I was thwarted occasionally. Trailing throughout the entire game did not concern me in the least; I was confident in my eventual triumph.
The redeeming quality of the versus mode does little to alleviate my disappointment—why should I need another player to enjoy the game? Especially when, back then, a single game cost as much as 4 credits, four times that of the majority of other arcade titles.
In conclusion, no elaborate final thoughts seem necessary; the last paragraph succinctly conveys my sentiments. It stands as a significant letdown with nothing more to add, a disappointment of considerable magnitude.
Fun Fact: the game was also included in a dual cabinet alongside NFL Blitz 2000, which Midway called the "SportStation." That’s the version I’m playing now.

Fox Sports College Hoops ’99
NA release: 23rd November 1998
JP release: N/A
PAL release: N/A
Developer: Z-Axis
Publisher: Fox Sports
N64 Magazine Score: 25%
Instead of opting for the fully professional basketball teams, Fox Sports instead went to the various colleges and universities to include their teams (but the players are all fictional). I personally find college sports being watched nationwide to be a bit of an odd thing, but it’s very popular in America.
College Hoops starts out with some extremely epic menu music, which is far too good for the game. Once you get past the menu and into the game, the only good part of the game – that music – is completely over and all you’re left with is the mess.
The game itself is hideous, each player looks out of proportion in a different way and you have an ugly wall of a crowd to look at. The gameplay doesn’t fare much better as it’s slow and unresponsive. Defending barely works and anything I tried resulted in a foul, I had much better luck by simply not taking control of any of the defending players.
You can hold the Z button to bring up button prompts to throw the ball to specific players, but when none of them get into good positions, the ability is wasted. I really struggled to get the ball through the hoop, with it bouncing so often or the opposing players forming a brick wall, so I could completely trashed.
College Hoops is definitely one of the worst sports games on the N64 so far.
All of which leaves you wishing you could be doing just about anything other than playing this pile of complete and utter dross. Falling down a flight of stairs, cracking your head open on an icy pavement, vomiting copiously into your lap, anything. Frankly, Fox College Hoops is the worst basketball game in the world.
- Tim Weaver, N64 Magazine #26
Remake or remaster?
This adds nothing to the genre.

Console Sports Games of 1994 - NBA Action '94
NBA Action '94 is the first entry in the NBA Action series of basketball games released in the mid-90s, primarily on Sega consoles. This first entry was exclusive to the Sega Genesis, with the Sega Game Gear and Sega Saturn receiving releases in this series. Only NBA Action '98 would release on other systems.
This first entry in the series is a licensed basketball game with all 27 of that season’s NBA teams present, as well as a good number of real-life players. With the use of a multi-tap adapter, up to five players can play in a season of 20, 40, or a full 82-game season.
