Cackling to myself because there you have Nigel, who seems like a typical Good Character™️...
But then you realise he's dating Basile, a murderer who stopped killing not because of guilt, but because it's an act of love towards Nigel.
...And then he marries him.

"Silent Night" Review: Joel Kinnaman Stars in John Woo's Riveting Return to Hollywood
Tumblr media
In the action-packed film "Silent Night," dialogue takes a backseat to intense visual storytelling. Directed by John Woo, the movie marks his impressive return to Hollywood after a two-decade hiatus since his 2003 film "Paycheck." The plot revolves around a father, Brian (played by Joel Kinnaman), who embarks on a vigilante mission to avenge his young son's death caused by gang violence. Set initially on Christmas Eve, "Silent Night" cleverly uses its title to hint at the absence of dialogue throughout the film. We meet Brian in a frantic chase, sporting a festive sweater, as he pursues a gang responsible for his son's accidental death during a shootout. Brian's pursuit ends with him being shot, leading to his loss of speech. The film follows Brian's transformation from a devoted family man to a revenge-driven individual, reminiscent of Travis Bickle. He rigorously trains in physical combat, knife skills, and firearms, preparing to confront the gang and their leader, Playa (Harold Torres), who finds Brian's actions personal. John Woo's direction shines in the film's action sequences, including car chases and gun battles, all crafted with his signature kinetic style and slow-motion effects. The standout scene is a brutal, extended hand-to-hand fight that elevates the movie's intensity. "Silent Night" also showcases beautiful visual transitions between Brian's past happy life and his current grief-stricken existence, emphasizing the stark contrast between the two. The film's minimal dialogue, rather than being a limitation, adds to its impact, supported by Kinnaman's powerful performance. This approach proves to be a significant strength of the film, offering a unique and compelling action movie experience.

Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine Offers Authentic and Affordable Thai Dishes
There are days when I really crave for Thai cuisine. I really love Thai curries as well as a good hot bowl of Tom Yum soup. I even joined a Thai cooking class a few years ago hoping to improve my culinary skills. Thankfully, it’s so much easier to satisfy my Thai cravings these days since food delivery is always available. I don’t have to order from expensive hotels and Thai restaurants, because I found out that authentic Thai dishes can also be quite affordable at Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine.
From Palawan to Marikina, Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine is a popular restaurant in El Nido that had to suspend its operations when the pandemic started. They recently opened a new branch in Marikina City where they can continue to offer their Thai specialties using authentic Thai spices and ingredients. They are located in Mayor Gil Fernandez Avenue, Marikina and are open daily from 10am to 9pm. I haven’t been able to visit their branch yet, which also has a rooftop al fresco dining area, but I was really happy with my yummy Thai delivery last week.
Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine is actually on WheninManila’s list of 10 Must Try Thai Places for Thai Food Delivery so I was really excited to try it for myself. These are a few of their bestsellers which we had for dinner.
We started with the Yum Woon Sen (P199) for our fresh appetizers. This is a delectable noodle salad with a mix of shrimp, vegetables, and glass noodles tossed with their signature dressing. It’s light and refreshing to eat, a great way to start our Thai journey.
I thought that bagoong was a Filipino ingredient but it turns out that its origins are actually from Thailand. The Bagoong Fried Rice (P199) is one of their traditional dishes using shrimp paste or bagoong mixed with the rice.
Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine’s version comes with green mango slices, onions and egg on the side. But the highlight of the dish is the special caramelized pork that balances the salty notes of the rice. It’s a strong and powerful combination that will satisfy all the bagoong lovers out there.
For our main dishes, we had the Kapraw Gai (P189) or Thai Basil Chicken. This is a stir fried minced chicken cooked with basil leaves to bring out the flavors. The juicy pieces of chicken are good to go with the bagoong fried rice or even just plain steamed rice.
But our favorite dish at Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine is definitely the Kad Ped Deang (P259) or Red Curry. This colorful beef curry dish is so aromatic and flavorful. You can really taste the authentic spices and ingredients used to create this gorgeous red curry. Place some sauce on top of hot rice and you really have everything you need. This is also available with chicken instead of beef.
Their dishes are very affordable but you still get the quality of a five-star Thai restaurant. I highly recommend giving them a try. Tuk Tuk Thai is also having a Giveaway on their social media pages right now. Just post a review of any of their dishes on their Instagram or Facebook account and you can win some freebies. You can visit their branch in Marikina or just order for delivery through GrabFood and FoodPanda. Authentic Thai dishes are now within reach at Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine.

Estudio ALA designs El Perdido Hotel with rammed earth walls and thatched roofs
Estudio ALA used thatched roofs and rammed-earth walls for this hotel in Pescadero on the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula.
Located outside a small agricultural town named El Pescadero, the new El Perdido Hotel was recently completed by Mexican architectural office Estudio ALA.
It is located 800 metres from the Pacific Ocean amidst farmland that is used to grow basil, chillies, tomatoes and strawberries.
Some of the hotel's walls can be fully opened for cross-ventilation
The hotel's stated goal is to foster the local area's way of life, so Estudio ALA wanted to use traditional construction techniques and materials.
"In a region where the corrosion of culture and tradition is being accelerated by rapid development, El Perdido embraces Baja California Sur's historical roots and material culture," said the practice.
"It provides a glimpse to the past while suggesting a potential design language for the future."
The architects employed local craftsmen and traditional building techniques
Rather than combine all of the hotel's rooms into a single building, the architects laid out guest quarters throughout the site.
They're laid out around a communal area, which includes the lobby and restaurant.
The smaller outbuildings feature rammed earth walls and timber-hewn roofs covered in thatch.
"This palette, typically disregarded in contemporary development for imported materials and tropical vegetation, is defined exclusively by locally sourced materials and built by local craftsmen," said Estudio ALA.
An observation tower forms part of the El Perdido Hotel complex
These contain the guest suites, which are appointed with their own lounge areas, a dining table, and kitchenette, making them feel more like standalone residential units than hotel rooms.
El Perdido Hotel's communal areas have no walls, allowing for natural ventilation and extending the functional spaces outdoors.
Between the buildings, local vegetation provides a lush backdrop to the pared-back and earthy interiors.
The architects used neutral tones and natural materials throughout the guest suites
Other communal spaces include a sunken conversation pit with a water feature and a chapel. The interiors feature natural materials, leaving the massive timber frame exposed and using hand-made wood finishes.
A tall, hourglass-shaped structure provides a lookout point for guests to take in the surrounding landscapes and views of the Pacific Ocean.
A shallow pond surrounded by local plants is a central feature of the landscape
The landscape was designed to use exclusively endemic plants and cacti, which require less maintenance amidst the area's dry climate and the typical temperature variations of a desert climate.
"The buildings are configured to maximize efficiency while ensuring a constant dialogue between the interior space and the surrounding landscape," said Estudio ALA.
"The result is a permeable building where the limits between the indoor and the outdoor vanish," they added.
The architects extended the living spaces outdoors to make the most of the area's climate
Estudio ALA was established in Guadalajara in 2012 by architects Luis Enrique Flores and Armida Fernández. They have also completed a minimalist chapel for the employees of a tequila factory in their city.
Other projects in the Baja California peninsula include a brutalist hotel with curved concrete walls by architects Ruben Valdez and Yashar Yektajo, and Nobu Hotel's first location in Mexico designed by WATG and Studio PCH.
The photography is by Iwan Baan.

Kate Kane faces a jury of her peers. The Bat Family convenes to cast their judgement on the actions of Batwoman who stopped Clayface from destroying Gotham, by murdering him.
    Cover A
    Cover B
DETECTIVE COMICS # 975 Writer: James Tynion IV Artist: Alvardo Martinez Inker: Raul Fernandez Colorist: Brad Anderson Letterer: Sal Cipriano Cover Artist: Martinez, Fernandez, & Anderson Variant Cover: Rafael Albuquerque Editors: Chris Conroy & Dave Wielgosz Group Editor: James S Rich Publisher: DC Comics
What You Need to Know: Clayface was out of control and larger than ever. A serum to make him revert to his human form was created by Dr. October, and a bullet infused with this mixture penetrated Basil Karlo’s Cerebral Cortex. The shot was taken by Batwoman, and then she faced the scorn of Batman and their team alike. None more than Cassandra Cain.
Kate is Bruce Wayne’s cousin. She is also marked by losing a loved one at an early age. Here a touching interaction between Kate and Bruce upon the tragic death of her Mother. Bruce advises his younger cousin the best he can, but it seems that she has a truly darker take on revenge than he does.
The look we see in Young Kate’s eyes is mirrored to the woman that she’s grown to be. It is clear that she does not regret her decision, and will be ready to face the consequences as such, but she seems to be haunted by Cassie Cain, who was in love with Basil.
What You’ll Find Out: Batman has called the entire family to the Batcave to meet and discuss Batwoman’s actions. Dick Grayson (Nightwing) stops off at the Clock Tower to check on Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) and rib her about taking notes to a family meeting.
Barbara (who has a photographic memory) understands that still after all these years it’s important to be prepared to debate with Batman, and is formulating her strategy as well as the argument. Nightwing is more of a man of action.
Cassandra, who has been staying at Wayne Manor, instructs young Damian on a lesson in personal Space and Manners. Tim wishes he had it on video. But the group heads down to the Batcave to begin.
Except they are surprised by the inclusion of someone unexpected, as they encounter Jason (The Red Hood).
What Just Happened? Batman instructs everyone, that he wants to have all sides of the argument considered.
Meanwhile, Kate communicates with Luke (Batwing) while she fights some Gorilla Gangsters and Monkey Mobsters. They discuss the possibility of starting their own team with Jean-Paul Valley (Azarel).
The discussion goes on and shifts perspective from player to player, well Damian does not particularly care, but Nightwing weighs in. Then Red Hood surprises everyone with his speech, yet no one was surprised by who he sided with based on his leanings towards violence.
Then Barbara shocks the room by attacking Batman directly. She says that they were all called here because they know Bruce better than he does himself and that they think he has a problem with Kate as his only living connection to his Mother Martha (your Mother’s name is Martha? Just joking). She says that this is not about Batwoman, but about Batman and his own feelings. No one comes to a verdict, and based on the argument that Barbara has, Bruce quietly ponders what she says.
Kate shows up to pay her respects at her mother’s grave.Soon the choice is made by Kate, and she appears to go back to working for the Government with her Father. It seems that he anticipated her answer and was at the ready with his fleet of aircraft.
Rating: 8 / 10 Final Thought: Though much less action, this one has all the hallmarks of a well-written story that furthers a plot. The addition of Red Hood was excellent and shows that the Bat-family is indeed in favor of granting second chances, and it is far better to get some conflict in the discussion because it would be worthless if everyone simply agreed with Batman. Barbara may be the gutsiest character in the DCU with her speech to Bruce. It will be interesting to see where the story goes from here. Will there be a division and conflict or a reconciliation with the promise of turning over a new leaf? We have seen what can happen in the past when Batman is not in control.

Detective Comics Came in at #3 in @multiversitycomics Best Ongoing 2017 Balloting
2017 saw “Detective Comics” release issues #948-971. From out of the darkness, the League of Shadows appeared. Jean-Paul Valley came into the spotlight during the ‘Intelligence’ arc. After being presumed dead for nearly a year, Timothy Jackson Drake escaped the prison of Mr. Oz and returned to his Bat-Family. In between all of that, Anarky built an underground city for the forgotten people of Gotham, and Batwoman was spun off. A lot happened. The breadth of content with which writer James Tynion IV and art team collaborators led by Alvaro Martinez with Raul Fernandez and Eddy Barrows with Eber Ferreira were able to get through in this year is a positive mark for DC’s double shipping scheme. More important, is the sheer consistent quality “Detective Comics” has achieved across those 23 issues and multiple art teams. “Detective Comics” hasn’t been the loudest book in DC’s staple of titles but it is the one I’ve looked forward to the most week in and week out. Not everything was great, but it features a consistency of quality that is worth recognition, even in missteps there was something interesting to say.
Uniting this year’s stories — running the gamut of assassin cults to killer robots to time travel — is Tynion’s exploration of (Bat)Family while diving into some of the more ideologically-fraught aspects of costumed vigilantism. This perspective turns a year of ‘Tec stories into examinations of how families deal with trauma and loss, alongside confronting the potentiality that their justifications as to ‘why’ they do what they do are, perhaps, more selfish than altruistic.
For all the spectacle, “Detective Comics” has been staring into an abyss and that core has kept it from falling in. This gaze is best represented in “Detective Comics” #968, as two versions of Tim Drake, one of the present and another a potential dark future, stare out at the city from the broken windows of the Belfry. “This whole building, Tim. This was our dream. It can still be our dream.” In Rebirth fashion, hope for a better tomorrow remains in Tim Drake. An implicit recognition that no matter what present darkness clouds the view the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.

DC Rebirth In Review - The Batman Family
With Doomsday Clock just around the corner and with the Rebirth branding ending too, i thought i would look back at how Rebirth has done for each and every on-going that has come out.
So here’s the next chapter in the series, the previous chapter on the Superman family can be read here, but in this chapter we will be talking about the Batman Family of comics.
Batman - I am a fan of Tom King, his work on Vision, Omega Men and Grayson are amazing, but i am not a fan of Tom King on Batman. His story telling feels muddled at times with what is going on on the page, take the I Am Suicide story for instance, was Bruce and Selina telling each other how they feel really the right back drop for a prison escape plot? It also feels like King likes to tell rather than show, which is the wrong attitude to have in a comic book. The War Of Jokes & Riddles was hit and miss at most when the potential it had was immense, and that seems to be the trap that King is falling into right now. Can’t fault the artwork on this book at all, Finch and Janin provide some of the best and most consistent work for a bi-monthly book, but it’s a shame the writing isn’t doing it justice. - 6/10
Detective Comics - For me, Detective Comics is the definitive Bat-family book of Rebirth, Tynion has managed to turn the long running series into a team book with relative ease. The first issue of the series sees Bruce reveal himself as Batman to his cousin Kate Kane AKA Batwoman, to which she laughs and says she always knew. Together they recruit Tim Drake (Red Robin), Stephanie Brown (Spoiler), Cassandra Cain (Orphan) and Clayface to form a team and set up a new base called The Belfry, which stands in the middle of Gotham. The premise alone is worth the buy but the characterisations are fantastic too, particularly with Clayface. Traditionally a villain, Basil Karlo joins the team with the promise from Bruce that he can get his life back, and its his ascendance from a villain to a hero in his own right that shows what this book is capable of doing. Tynion is onto something with this series and i hope he is on it for a long time to come. The only downside is that inconsistent art teams on the series, Eddy Barrows and  Alvaro Martinez provide artwork for the first dozen or so issues but on an inconsistent basis that makes it jarring if you read in trades. - 9/10
Tumblr media
All-Star Batman - I really enjoy Scott Snyder’s work, he likes to tell big stories and isn’t afraid of rocking out in the process. The first story revolves around Bruce and Duke trying to transport Two-Face to a location for a cure to his mental illness but being stopped along the way by all manner of criminals looking to collect on a bounty put up by Harvey’s bad side. The back up story about Duke is rather interesting because it reveals for the first time that Duke is in fact a meta-human, the story ended but is going to be picked up in Metal at some stage i believe as well as the upcoming Batman: The Signal mini-series. The artwork of the series has been surprisingly experimental in places but it’s also been very good. A very good series, any time Snyder writes Batman you’re in for a treat but the series did feel like it had ran out of steam a little bit with the last arc. Still, a must-read for Batman fans, especially those who loved the New 52 series. - 8/10
Batgirl - A so-so series thus far, Hope Larson falls into the trap of having to serve up Barbara Gordon a love interest in each arc and it becomes predictable when a single young male turns up on the scene that Babs is going to have feelings for them. Was not a fan of Albuquerque on art, it felt very rushed, but Chris Wildgoose stepped up and brought a sense of the familiar when Batgirl returned to Burnside. There’s lot of work to do to get this series to be a must-read. - 5/10
Tumblr media
Nightwing - The book picks up from the end of Grayson as well as Robin War with Dick Grayson returning to his classic blue Nightwing costume in order to go undercover at the Court of Owls, and later he returns to his pre-Flashpoint home of Bludhaven. Writer Tim Seeley takes on Dick Grayson minus his Grayson cohort Tom King and he brings a sense of stability to the series that some will find comforting if they’re moving over from Grayson to this book. Seeley hasn’t been afraid to take risks with Nightwing and it pays off with some really personal story telling later on in the series that will call back to the days of Grant Morrison’s Batman & Robin run. Coupled with the nice artwork from Javier Fernandez, Marcus To and Minkyu Jung, Nightwing has been one of the more consistently enjoyable books of Rebirth and is well worth checking out. - 8.5/10
Batgirl & The Birds Of Prey - In stark comparison to the other Batgirl title, this one is incredibly well written by the Benson sisters (who are also writers on the excellent TV show The 100) and while the artwork hasn’t been the best, it’s still perfectly serviceable and doesn’t spoil the book at all. The writing almost makes me feel like the Benson sisters are acting out the script of each issue because the conversations between Barbara, Helena and Dinah feel so natural and funny too. This book is easily one of the most underrated of Rebirth, it should just be Birds Of Prey though. The recent additions of Catwoman and Poison Ivy to the line up has been refreshing to the series too, so hopefully the Bensons are free to be a bit more liberal with the line up. - 9/10
Tumblr media
Red Hood & The Outlaws - If someone told me in January 2016 that i would be recommending a Scott Lobdell series i would have laughed in their face, but here we are and i’m about to eat some serious humble pie. RHATO is not only one of the best written series in Rebirth but also one of the best looking ones too. Pairing Jason Todd with Artemis (not the one from Young Justice) and Bizarro was a stroke of genius. Artemis challenges Jason to be a more moral man and Bizarro brings out a side of Jason that can only be described really as fatherly. Their moniker of the “Dark Trinity” is not very accurate as there’s not much dark about them, except that they are willing to do things that the classic Trinity are not. Lobdell strikes a great serious tone with a funny one too but he doesn’t overdo it like he has with his other works. Perhaps the only complaint i would have is that he’s yet to have that big storyline just yet that makes you go “fuck yeah!” but i’m sure it’s coming. The artwork by Dexter Soy and colourist Veronica Gandini is so incredibly well done too, with fantastic detail and colour and an almost anime feel to it. Just like New Super-Man, this book flies under the radar for most people but it is well worth reading. - 9.5/10
Batman Beyond - My first big exposure to Batman Beyond was via the Futures End series so some of the references and characters are a little lost on me. The story telling beats are solid though and the art is very nice. Probably one for the die-hards though. - 7/10

Batwoman - This was one of the first Wave 2 books and is only a handful of issues in, but so far i really like it. I’m not sure how the writing duties work with Marguerite Bennett and James Tynion on the title but it’s clear the book is well plotted. Steve Epting on art duties provides a moody backdrop to the series that suits it well, but i wonder how it would translate to other locales. Solid so far, can’t wait to see where Kate Kane goes from here and teaming her up with Alfred’s daughter Julia is a big plus too. - 7/10

Conclusions
The Bat Family of books have always maintained a high level of quality and that continues into Rebirth. It’s strange but the only two books i have problems with are the ones that were very popular in the New 52 era, Batman and Batgirl. I don’t see changes happening any time soon though, Batman is still DC’s biggest selling comic and Batgirl is still popular in her Burnside guise too, but i would like to see a change in writer for each book to change things up a little bit.

Just like with the Superman Family of books, the big winners from Rebirth are the ones who were let down by the New 52 era such as Tim Drake and Jason Todd. A real sense of legacy is coming out of these books right now and it’s a great time to be a Batman fan.
Thanks for reading!
Next up: The Justice League!
