#basically ra's al ghul (the sequel)

since al ghul isn't really a surname — it's a title, meaning "of the demon," i started thinking about the different monikers (i.e., organs) that could be attributed to the other members of the family.
ra's is the head, the mind that plots, the will that commands. rúh, the soul, is the unseen force—the essence of the dynasty.
talia al ghul – the heart (qalb) talia is the emotional core of the al ghul family, often torn between loyalty to her father and her love for bruce wayne. her decisions, though calculated, are deeply driven by matters of the heart—love, betrayal, and faith. she embodies passion and connection, making her the family’s qalb.
dusan al ghul – the shadow (dhil) dusan, the "white ghost," operates in the margins of the al ghul legacy. his role is one of quiet devotion, cast aside, yet, always present. his loyalty and sacrifice, earn him the title of the dhil, the shadow that follows without faltering.
nyssa raatko – the spine (amud al-faqr) nyssa is the backbone of resistance and rebellion within the al ghul family. her strength and defiance against her father’s rule position her as the amud al-faqr, the spine, unyielding and essential for standing tall against opposition.
melisande – the blood (dam) melisande represents the lifeline that connects the family to its mortal roots. her role in the al ghul saga may be fleeting, but her influence flows through talia and the family’s lineage, much like blood sustains life. she is the dam, a vital yet often overlooked element.
sora – the lungs (riyah) sora, ra’s al ghul’s lost love, is the breath of life that once inspired him. her memory fuels his ambition, and her loss suffocates him. she is the riyah, the lungs, symbolising both the life-giving force and the void left behind when it is gone.
damian wayne – the hands (aydi) damian, born of both the waynes and the al ghuls, is the agent of the family’s will. whether building or destroying, his actions carry the burden of legacy. as the aydi, the hands, he represents both creation and conflict, the tangible force that shapes the future.
athanasia al ghul - the pulse (nafas) athanasia is the constant heartbeat that keeps their future alive. she sustains life, binding the waynes and the al ghuls, a reminder that their stength lies not just in their past, but in their ability to endure and evolve. this vitality makes her the nabadh, the pulse, the promise of renewal.
mara al ghul – the eyes (ayn) mara is the family’s watcher, a presence that perceives more than what it reveals. she is a visionary, seeing not just what is before her, but what lies beneath and beyond. she is the ayn, the eyes, ever watchful, attuned to every rhythm and dissonance.
[ we know very little about dusan's wife, but i think that she would be the sawt, the voice, a balance between silence and sound. ]

Batman Ally Movie Ideas, Part I: Robin
Given the general size of the Batfamily, I have decided to cover specific mantles and the assortment of major individuals who have taken it on. So, we start with Robin, who was originated by Dick Grayson, the circus acrobat whose parents were killed in an "accident" caused by a gangster extorting the circus, who was then taken in and adopted by Batman. After a falling out led to Dick becoming Nightwing, Batman took in a street urchin named Jason Todd after he tried to steal the tires off the Batmobile. That one we've already covered under Red Hood. After that, we got Tim Drake, a fan of Batman and Robin who convinced them to take him on. Stephanie Brown I'll cover more under Batgirl, and then we had Damian Wayne, Batman's son with Talia al Ghul. I understand there's a newer one named Duke Thomas too, though he seems to go by Signal mostly.
Origin Movie: One of the biggest difficulties with portraying all of these characters is that the movies so far seem to be allergic to using even one of them. The Burton-Schumacher series took until the third one to portray Dick, and the Nolan trilogy had John Blake, a young cop only cheekily referred to as Robin at the very end. And since there is a natural order to these characters' introductions, saving Dick until way down the line typically means Jason, Tim, and Damian are basically sh*t out of luck for adaptation. So, I'd say the most natural way to make sure we at least head for the other characters getting portrayals is to start with Dick as a major player, possibly almost have him as the "main character," learning about Batman and being taken on by him.
Sequel Movie: This is the way we seem to have gone so far, and as a result the series never gets far enough to start including everyone else. With Dick introduced in an origin, we can at least have space to bring in Jason in a sequel.
Finale Movie: If you're introducing Dick here, everyone else has basically been given the finger for that series. Jason Todd as Red Hood as the finale villain, though, does give you a natural setup for Dick and Tim to be part of the plot as well, and both Jason and Damian have ties to Ra's al Ghul, who is also a solid finale villain.
Standalone Movie: A standalone Nightwing movie could be awesome, as could a Red Hood movie. A "Son of Batman" movie starring Damian could be cool too. Honestly, I feel bad for Tim. He's the only one that doesn't have good standalone movie potential that I can think of.
Overall, here are my rankings of them:
Standalone Movie: Lots of possibilities there.
Finale Movie: Good options that would require you to set up several of them earlier.
Origin Movie: Starting the series with Dick already established is the least we can do to even try to include everyone.
Sequel Movie: I think we've done that particular tactic to death, personally.
What do you think? Who should I cover next?

Gotham Villains x Hotel Owner!Reader || Headcanons
Explanation / Topic: You run one of the cities dingy hotels except this one, in all of its glory, is only ever visited by bad guys. Your hotel is well known as the place rogues hide away in when they're planning or they're just out of action for a while because you refuse to give up information to the police no matter what (Its proprietor-client confidentiality! Ha ha) and you're treat them fairly (Although- on the kinder side of course)
These are the many ways they show their gratitude, no matter how small.
Character involved: Most, if not all, of Fox Gotham's rogues. Except Ra's Al Ghul because he bores me. Nevertheless, not just the Legion Horrible's like the picture might lead you to believe- that's just the picture with the most villains that I could think of.
Warnings: Probably too much fluff. I'll make a sequel to this with the less-then-pretty, nitty grotty details of this hotel too probably XD
Barbara likes to invest every now and then, "Just making sure my affairs are in order baby- gotta make sure my hidey hole's still there when I need it." but she always adds a little something for you to buy yourself 'something pretty' (Since your style is SO plain, according to her but then again who isn't plain compared to her XD). This little something is always upwards of a hundred dollars. She's such a sugar mommy you cant convince me that she isn't-
Butch (Or Cyrus Gold, or Grundy. he has too many names) has made it clear that if you ever need help, you can always call him and he'll be there. Very gangsta about it. He's such a big, tough guy but such a softy on the inside XD When he had Grundy brain, he still had some kind of tracker in his mind like dogs do that took him 'home' (To your hotel), dragging Ed along with him. He gave you a big, bone crushing hug when he got there.
Dr Strange is not allowed in as he'll steal your guests and experiment on them.
You don't know Ecco too well yet and vice versa but when she turned up with Jeremiah and Jervis- you definitely appreciated her presence more then that of Jeremiah's. You were still sore over Jerome and didn't trust this new brother. Still, you complimented the bullet in Ecco's skull, saying it was pretty cool, and now she loves you XD When she's in the neighbourhood she occasionally likes to pop in and say hello; Spread a little chaos, you know the deal.
Honestly you probably new Bridgit long before Strange forcing upon her the heat resistance thing and her becoming Firefly. She of course didn't remember you but soon *warmed* up to you after you gave her one of the few rooms with a fireplace and easily forgave her when she accidentally set the couch in her room on fire (I mean its for sure not the worst thing that has happened within these walls- no worries). She has been known to go around lighting the fireplaces for you under the pretence of having fun (Which is true) but also so that you can worry about one less thing. Firefly is also one to come chat with you if she's bored.
Fish Mooney obviously doesn't stay with you very often at all, because this lady can find better dwellings (As, no offense but your hotel is kiiiiinda dingy. What can you do about it, though? You house rogues and a lot of them don't have a lotta money) but she still absolutely appreciates what you do. She'll send bad guys that she does business with that have deeper pockets then your usual client, your way. She's also kind to you, which to me is even better honestly haha XD
Headhunter stays with you a lot when he's on business and often reminds you that you get a discount from him if you require his services. Hey, you keep him in milkshakes! He's gotta repay you somehow.
Okay, the twins. You knew Jerome first and got off to a bad start with Jeremiah due to that. Still, we aren't talking about relationships; We're talking about nice things. So moving on. Just assume that you warm up to the brainier twin.
These two are hard XD Cuz their 'good' and 'bad' sides kinda blur together as they're so unpredictable and don't really care about anyone.
Still, I can see Jerome being pretty light with you and valuing the fact that you can keep up with his banter- so he keeps you alive. You're basically his mother actually, despite the possible lack of age difference. Like, he wants to show you stuff he does and tell you about chaos he's created.
And Jeremiah honestly appreciates that you'll listen to his long speeches (You've gotten pretty good at just sitting and nodding your head and you've perfected the art of the well placed understanding noises like 'Hmm' and 'Ah!' and 'Oh dear' in your line of work)- so obviously, you're invaluable to him. Must keep you around. I mean, Ecco listens, but does she really understand? That is the question.
When he's around, Jervis is very polite and gracious. He'll duck into the kitchens after dinner and start helping you with the dishes and clear dining tables, he'll ask you how you are and mean it (Like, he'll stand there and discuss it with you), he'll try to keep Jerome from barging into your room in the early hours of the morning, etc. Just nice things like that ^^
Magpie tries not to steal from you... Haha XD Like, she'll pick up a pretty clock off a mantle piece and then go to leave with it... then realise that this is yours and go 'Oops!!' and put it back, giggling nervously.
... When she leaves you still find various items from other places in the hotel, in her room, but still. The fact that she tries is enough!
Mr Freeze is a pleasure to have around, of course!! He's quiet, he nods to you when he passes, and he's there to freeze assholes that harass you (And then take them outside so they don't melt all over your carpet). A respectful dude. He has frozen Jerome multiple times... particularly when Jervis has been unsuccessful in persuading him not to wake you up at 3 in the morning.
Ivy gets so happy whenever she sees you. Lots of hugs and telling you all about how she's been. Her energy is enough to cheer you up, and on your birthdays she always brings you a new plant that has meaning to her. Like, a sunflower for how kind you are, a Ficus for abundance, etc. Always in a pot of course, never dead. So of course, you have to take care of them but its a small price to pay for the sweetness ^^ And the not being murdered thing.
Like Mooney and Barbara, Oswald doesn't stay often due to having that mansion from his father but he remembers your kindness from when he would fall on hard times before that (And after the fact, too of course) and whenever he's making some kind of mafia deal he always ensures your and your hotels safety in the contract.
Pyg / Lazlo (I cant decide which name I like best XD) is just very polite, like Jervis. Gentlemen. Also his impressions- God. Have fun with that. He might just do your favourite Looney Tune character if he's in a good mood.
With Ed... look, if you even try with his riddles without being prompted, he'll do anything for you. It's well documented. I'm not sur about nice deeds, cuz Riddler's kind of a dick, but he'll for sure send you a birthday card every year! Christmas probably too ^^
Scarecrow: I will not spray you today. You: Gee thanks. // No but seriously, he's quiet about his gratitude but he is definitely once of the good ones ^^ Would absolutely take it upon himself to come save your ass if you got abducted.
Tabitha... well, you know how Headhunter will you get a discount if you want someone killed? Tabitha will do it for fucking free.
Hey, if you feed Victor (Zsasz), you have a friend for life. He will bring pizza and just hang out together. He is also willing to murder someone for you.

Spider-Man: The Gathering of the Sinister Six (1999)
The Machiavelli Club, mentioned on pages 34-35 of Gathering of the Sinister Six, as well as pages 162-163 of Revenge of the Sinister Six, was founded by Professor James Moriarty, from the Sherlock Holmes stories "The Final Problem," "The Adventure of the Empty House," and the novel The Valley of Fear. Its members include various rogues from comic books, movies, prose fiction, and so forth:
* The waiter at the Macchiavelli Club is Henry from Asimov's BLACK WIDOWER stories. * Wilson Fisk (The Kingpin) * Obadiah Stane (The Iron Monger) from Iron Man. * Gruber brothers: Anton Gruber first appeared in the prose novel Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp (a sequel to his homosexual murder mystery The Detective). Anton Gruber was basically a Baader-Meinof/Red Army Faction-style terrorist. He was renamed Franz Gruber for the film Die Hard, while his brother Simon appeared in Die Hard With a Vengeance. * Doctor Fu Manchu is obviously "the long-lived oriental gentleman" that the Gentleman refers to. (Although later on it is said that the Gentleman harbors prejudice against the Chinese, he makes no snide remarks about Doctor Fu Manchu.) The Gentleman believes that Doctor Fu Manchu is dead due to the events of Master of Kung Fu #118, though he showed up alive and well in Marvel Knights I #4. Marvel currently refers to him as the Ghost, due to licensing issues. * Auric is Auric Goldfinger, from the Ian Fleming novel. Auric is derived from the Latin word for gold, from which its elemental symbol, Au, is derived. * Lex is Lex Luthor. * Justin Hammer is an Iron Man villain. * "The German Herr Taubman." An alias used by a recurring villain called "The Deaf Man" in "The 87th Precinct" novels by Ed McBain. Great novels BTW. (Taubman is German for deaf man as I recall.) Here's a clip from a fan site. * The Wrightsville Diedrich Van Horn is from the Ellery Queen novel Ten Day's Wonder, written by Ellery Queen. (Ellery Queen was a sleuth created by two cousins who adopted his name as their pen name. He went to a town called Wrightsville for vacations. In the movies, Ralph Bellamy played Ellery Queen-Bellamy also appeared in two Eddie Murphy movies as one of the Duke brothers.) * Ras is Ra's Al Ghul, from the Distinguished Competition. * Soze is from the film The Usual Suspects. * Hannibal is Hannibal Lecter, from the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, and later Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. * Carmen is Carmen San Diego from the computer game and cartoon show. * Mr. Glass is from the film Unbreakable, as played by Samuel Jackson. * Napier refers to the Jack Napier, the Joker, from the 1989 Batman film. * Ernst is Ernst Blofeld from the Ian Fleming novel Thunderball. * Randolph and Mortimer Duke are from two Eddie Murphy films, Trading Places and Coming to America. While in both these films Randolph and Mortimer Duke, insider traders, were played by the same actors (Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy), Eddie Murphy was not playing the same person in these films, which were otherwise unrelated.
Although not mentioned as a member of the Machiavelli Club, Caspar Gutman worked with the Gentleman in the past, per page 166 of Secret of the Sinister Six. Casper Gutman comes from the Dashiell Hammett novel The Maltese Falcon, published in 1929.
Source: Marvel Universe Appendix
Carmen Sandiego is part of the Machiavelli Club, along with Jack Napier, Hannibal Lecter and Mr. Glass. Among others. Moriarty was a founding member, and the Gruber Brothers and a villain from an Ellery Queen novel have been members. The Gentleman briefly converses with two brothers, Randolph and Mortimer, who made their money on the futures exchange, and wonders how they earned a place at the club as they are no more 'evil' than standard stockbrokers.
Though not mentioned by name, Clint Eastwood, Robert Downey Jr. and Sylvester Stallone are all heavily implied to be attending Brick Johnson's funeral.
The cast from Scooby-Doo shows up at the end of the final book.
The 27th Precinct's Detective Briscoe takes statements.
Dr. Christian Szell is an old associate of The Gentleman.
Quentin Beck passes Cassady and Jesse.
In the third book, the Gentleman credits the inspiration for his overall Evil Plan to be a late associate of his named Auric.
One of the police officers in the third book is implied to be the son of Marge Gunderson.

Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Movie Review
I don't know how I never saw this movie before. Obviously I am a huge Batman fan and I used to love TMNT cartoon as a kid. I even enjoyed the first live action movie when it came out. I was always a big Leo fan. I never read the Batman/TMNT crossover comics, but this is definitely something I would have watched at the time of its release if I had been aware about it. The 'vs' in the title is a misnomer as this is a true blue Batfamily and TMNT team up against Shredder and Ra's al Ghul. And its quite a fun team up.
The film in essence is another plot to destroy Gotham as Ra's plans to use the Ooze given to him by Shredder, and combining it with Joker Venom to turn all of Gotham's citizens into monsters, so the city would tear itself apart. In returns, he promises to give Shredder access to the lazarus pit. So obviously, the TMNT follow Shredder to Gotham and run into Batman, who is investigating the robberies being committed by the foot clan. The film's fun is definitely watching all the various interactions between character. Its fun to see Batman fight Shredder on two separate occasions and its fun to see Batman team up with Leo, given they are the two leaders of the respective families. You see Raph and Robin bond and you see Batgirl and Donnie work together to come up with a antidote to the Ooze. The plot is clearly a fairly silly one. There is an entire section where the Arkham inmates get turned into various animals, led by the Joker and Batman, Batgirl, Robin, and the TMNT fight all the various Arkham inmates. But the film has a few inserts of some dark stuff, like Leo being exposed to Scarecrow's gas and seeing his brother be killed in a vision, which later leads him to push past his fear when he's fighting Ra's at the end. Then there is a section when Batman is turned into a monsterous Bat monster and there is a pretty strong implication that he kills Mr. Freeze. But the film knows its general tone because you have Batman saying 'cowabanga', Mikey riding a skateboard around Wayne manor to Alfred's exasperation, Mr Freeze turns into a polar bear and Ivy turns into a literal plant. So the film knows just how goofy it is by the very essence of its premise but it doesn't compromise on the essence of the Batman characters. The action scenes are fun. Definitely the Batman vs Shredder fights were a highlight for me, and the whole Arkham sequence was a lot of fun with Freeze, Ivy, Harley, Joker, Two Face, Scarecrow, Bane turning into a variety of animals. Also, the post credit scene is actually pretty neat.
When it comes to negatives, there is definitely some tonal clash. Clearly TMNT is aimed at a slightly more humor filled audience than Batman and at times it does feel a bit eye rollingly silly. The plot of turning Gotham citizens into animals is definitely something that is very much aimed at children and the fact that all the Arkham inmates are so happy to be turned into animals is also a little dumb. Shredder and the foot clan are also basically left to be side villains for Ra's, since Ra's is the one who devises the master plan. Some of the voice acting is also a little flat.
I will say that Troy Baker is a little meh as Batman. I feel he makes for a much better Joker. Cas Anwar also isn't particularly menacing as Ra's. Eric Bauza, Darren Criss, Baron Vaughn, and Kyle Mooney are all good as Leo, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey respectively. Rachel Bloom is a solid Batgirl as is Ben Giroux as Robin. Brian George as Alfred, Tara Strong as Ivy/Harley, Dimaggio as Mr Freeze, and Andrew Kishino as Shredder are also notable. All in all, this delivers exactly what you would think would be delivered in a Batman/TMNT crossover. I hope the post credit scene of Shredder Joker means that there will be a sequel because I would love that. A 7/10 for me.

Arrow Fanfiction Rec Reposted
Here is my Arrow fanfiction rec! Most of these are a few years old, since it's been awhile since I've read any Arrow fanfic. But they are all still really good! This is reposted because I was having trouble with the formatting, so I ended up deleting the post and reposting it.
Past is Prologue
By: Naitch03
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10709156/1/Past-is-Prologue
Summary: We all have regrets. But one person now has the power to do something about it. 25 years in the future, Thea Queen, the Green Arrow, has gathered the most important people in her (and her brother's) lives from the past for one purpose- to change the past. Join them as they watch the first 2 years of Oliver's journey to become the first Green Arrow.
My Comments: This is one of my all time favorite Arrow fanfictions. It is a characters-watch-the-show fic, but the transcripts are written by Naitch himself. This fic is really well written and Naitch transcribes the show beautifully. I really love the “audiences” reactions and how they react to Oliver’s life. I really love the backstory set up of why they are there and the reasons too. It is also one of the few characters-watch-the-show fics that are actually completed. It only goes to season 2 of Arrow though, and then AU from there. At the time it was written season 3 was just coming out. But still highly recommend giving this one a read!!! Naitch does have two fics of this series posted on both AO3 and the full series posted on ff.net, so I will link both down below.

By: Stegro88
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11260290
Summary: Oliver Queen has returned to Starling City after being lost at sea for five years. And he doesn't return alone. Who is the woman with him? What happened to him while he was away?
My Comments: This fic is basically written about what could've happened if Sara and Oliver switched places, Oliver joining the League of Assassins, and Sara being recruited by ARGUS. Sara is only in 3 chapters, I think, but it's still a really good fic. I love the romance between Oliver and Nyssa. Not to mention the plot and the OCs are just amazing. This fic is cross-posted on AO3, but it only has the first 14 chapters, so if you want to read the complete fic, you have to go to ff.net.

By: WriteWithUrHeart
https://archiveofourown.org/works/3445124
Summary: In the aftermath of his fight with Ra's Al Ghul, Oliver finds himself somewhere unexpected: his hospital room when he first came back from the Island. --- With a second chance to right the mistakes he's made since coming back to Starling City, what will Oliver do to save the people he's loved and lost?
My Comments: This is a pretty good fic. I really love this fic, time travel has always been a favorite trope of mine, so this fic was a delight to find. I really love Oliver reassembling the team, and not to mention the friendship between Felicity and Tommy is awesome, something the show robbed us of. I would highly recommend it. There is one chapter in the second half that I absolutely LOVE!!! Do read!!! This fic is cross-posted on ff.net, so I’ll link that down below.

Forever is Composed of Nows
By: Bre & So_Caffeinated
https://archiveofourown.org/works/5626840
Summary: Sometime in the not-so-distant future, things aren't going all that well. At least, that's the story Oliver and Felicity are told when a supposed-time-traveler (and their friend, who should currently be in a coma, who is a supposed-superhero called The Flash) pops up in the lair with a toddler in tow.... who calls them "momma" and "daddy." The future isn't safe for her currently (or futurely, I guess), but her once and future parents haven't got a clue what to do with her in this time. Slade Wilson, however.... he might have his own agenda when he finds out his nemesis is apparently a father.
My Comments: A really great fic!!! I would HIGHLY recommend this fic! It truly is a work of art that I still read all the time. I love the romance between Oliver and Felicity too! I mean both of them are forced to confront the chemistry between them while at the same time trying to parent a 3 year old. Not to mention Sara was a total badass in this fic! And I love the relationship between Moira and Felicity, and (Spoiler) how it just does a 180 once Moira meets Ellie. The plot is to die for and definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat. This fic is part of a series, so I’ll link that down below. And it is also translated to Portuguese and French, and cross-posted on ff.net. So I’ll link that all down below.

Summary: Thanks to The Flash, some visitors from the future help give Oliver a new perspective on some things.

He Deserves a Shot (at Being Happy)
By: ChronicOlicity
https://archiveofourown.org/works/7187378/chapters/16311917
Summary: Tommy Merlyn has spent most of his life being an expensive disappointment to his family, but now he's a part-owner of a semi-successful nightclub in the worst area of town (it's seriously looking up) alongside his best friend, who, after five years on a deserted island, decided to come back to be a freakin vigilante. It's a long story, one that's longer than Tommy wants to remember, but it took the Glades collapsing and the death of one of the best friends to get him officially done with being a troublemaker. Nothing interesting. Just running a nightclub, and trying not to get into any trouble. Oliver's been gone to god knows where for most of the summer, which means he's stuck being the big brother to the guy's snarky little sister, whose boyfriend "Ron" seems to be completely set on getting himself killed. An afternoon of test-driving Verdant's new cocktails gets interesting when Felicity Smoak and John Diggle show up asking (more) questions about where to find Oliver, and Tommy has to decide whether he wants to keep his new rule. Spoiler alert; he doesn't.
My Comments: This has to be one of the most funniest fics I've ever read. It's hysterical!!!! Tommy is slightly OOC, but god do you just fall in love with him. I also like ChronicOlicity’s take on season 2, and how it could have played out with Tommy still being alive. I also love the romance between Oliver and Felicity in this fic as well, it’s to die for!!! I would definitely give this one a read. Also as a side note this is one of the longest fanfics that I’ve ever read. And it literally only took me a couple of hours because I could just not put it down!! This is sort of cross-posted on ff.net, but the ff.net story only has the first chapter. So if you want to read the whole thing, you have to read it on AO3.

To Embrace
By: Kiko-Butt
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11576452
Summary: She was too stubborn to embrace death, that was how Thea Queen found herself staring at her 16 year old reflection. Hopefully her stubbornness would come in handy once her brother returned to Star City, or Starling City. That name change was hard enough to get used to once, now she had to do it all over again.
My Comments: This is a really good time travel fic. It's the first one I've read that's Thea-based though. I do really like it though. I love how it talks about things before Oliver returns. I'm pretty sure it's been abandoned, which is a shame because it was really going places. I would still recommend reading it.

The Arrow and the Canary
By: NinjaRiderWriter
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11296587/1/The-Arrow-and-the-Canary
Summary: Oliver and Sara Lance have returned to Starling City after defeating Ivo with Slade and Shado. They have directed themselves on the path left by Robert Queen for his son to right their family's wrongs. Armed with a list of names, the two set forth to bring down the wicked. Together, alongside their allies, they strive to make Starling City safe from those who wish it harm.
My Comments: So this is actually a sequel to another fanfiction. Although you don't really need to read it to read this one. All you really need to know is that Ivo shot Oliver instead of Shado, he died, and when Slade arrived he injected Oliver with the mirakuru to bring him back. This is a pretty good fic that I really enjoy. I have to admit that Oliver having the mirakuru kind of put me off at first, but the author manages to make it work. I also like how the author shows the differences between Sara and Oliver's methods as well. I would recommend reading this fic. This fic is not on AO3, but the prequel is, so I’ll link that down below.

Technical Assistance
By: ThatMasquedGirl
https://archiveofourown.org/works/1359190
Summary: Felicity Smoak swore she'd provide technical assistance to all who need it. She's just not sure she's prepared for her newest client.
My Comments: So this is basically a what if Oliver came to her as the Hood for help instead as Oliver Queen. It's actually really really good, and very well written. I love Masqued’s version of season one. And how the romance builds between both Felicity and Oliver and Felicity and “The Hood.” Felicity’s backstory is a bit different in this, but I actually kind of liked it more than her ‘origin story’ in the show. The only thing is that this fic can only be read by AO3 members, so you have to have an account to read it. I'd highly, highly recommend it!! Also there are way too many sequels, or outtakes is what they really are, for me to link in, so instead I'm just going to link the entire series instead. ThatMasquedGirl also has this story published on fanfiction.net as well. So I’ll link that site down below as well.

To Hell and Back
By: Nyame
https://archiveofourown.org/works/12961884
Summary: Oliver Queen was sixteen years old when he washed up on Lian Yu. Barry Allen was 14 when he washed up. And Kara Zor-El was 12 when she landed on Lian Yu with her baby cousin Kal. Together they fight to survive the harsh reality that they are all facing together.
My Comments: I have to say that the summary above (which I wrote) does not even come close to doing this fic justice. Now this fic still keeps the basic backstories for all the characters (except Oliver's). Kara's world still explodes. Barry's mom is still killed by the Reverse. Only difference is that Robert wasn't on the Gambit, only Oliver was. Also since Oliver was still in high school, he and Laurel never get together (they do later on in the fic). Also what I didn't put in the summary was that they follow Sara Lance's island adventures rather than Oliver's, so the trio winds up in Nanda Parbat rather than with Argus. Now also this fic is not centered on the island times, but rather on afterwards, when they arrive back in Starling. This is truly one of my most favorite fics and I HIGHLY recommend it. You won't regret it. Also this fic is cross-posted on ff.net, so I’ll link that down below. This fic also has a TV Tropes page, so that’ll be down below as well.

What's a Little History (Between You and I)
By: Sarcastic_Fina
https://archiveofourown.org/works/1184075
Summary: In the wake of the Undertaking, Felicity returns to Starling City when her brother Tommy is severely injured. and soon finds her world turned completely upside down.
My Comments: This fic is based on the premise of Felicity being Tommy's younger sister. I have to say I really love the backstory that Fina has set up for this premise. I've read a couple other fics with this same trope but none have even come close to pulling it off as well as Fina did. The only thing I wish for is that Fina would've explained how Season 1 would've worked without Felicity, since she was, you know, vital to dismantling the machine. But other than that I have to give this one a 10/10.

I Took a Wrong Turn Somewhere (And Somehow Ended Up Here)
By: LadyChi
https://archiveofourown.org/works/1107700
Summary: Felicity Smoak made one mistake in her whole life, and his name was Oliver Queen. They had one night together, and then the Queen's Gambit went down. Then she found herself crying in a dormitory bathroom, hoping what she knew down to her bones to be true was a lie...
My Comments: So the basic premise of this fic is Felicity and Oliver hookup before the Gambit, and Felicity ends up getting pregnant from it. And God, do I think the author managed to pull it off. I have to say that the thing I loved most about this is how it showed all the dynamics of everything. And I also really enjoyed Lady Chi's take on season one of Arrow. The author didn't really leave off at a cliffhanger, but even so it still leaves me aching for more. I do think that even though this is discontinued, it is still worth your time!

Summary: Oliver and Felicity have been dating in secret, but when they get engaged they know they’re going to have to start telling people. They know though that Tommy, Felicity’s older brother and Oliver’s best friend, won’t take it well.
My Comments: The summary up above is from the first fic in this series. I have to say that this is a delightful read. I’ve been reading and rereading this series all week, and god is it wonderful. This series takes place in an alternate universe where the island never happened, and Felicity is Malcom Merlyn’s daughter and Tommy’s younger sister. Summary: Felicity ends up making a few less that clean hacks after Cooper’s supposed death and ends up being coerced into working for ARGUS, and Amanda Waller has the perfect partner for her…
My Comments: This fic is set during year three of the island, where Felicity is there for Hong Kong and she’s paired up with Oliver working for ARGUS. I have to say that I fell in love with this fic. Year three was always my favorite part of the island. And I love secret agent Oliver as well. Even though there are only five chapters (6th is an author’s note) this fic is to die for. Kaylee is doing a rewrite of this fic, of which there is only one chapter, but even so I’ll link it down below. Eyes on Fire
By: Bindy417
https://archiveofourown.org/works/4949116
Summary: Felicity Smoak never wanted to be a member of the cyber-terrorist group Brother Eye. For five years she’s been searching for a way out with no success. When Felicity hears rumors of The Arrow, the dark and dangerous Starling City vigilante, she knows she’s finally found her salvation. Determined, Felicity seeks out The Arrow. What she discovers is a world beyond anything she could’ve imagined and a hero who may just need saving too.
My Comments: I can’t believe I haven’t recommended this fic before. This is an old favorite of mine that I found a couple of years ago. This AU is just amazing, and the romance between Oliver and Felicity is just to die for. Not to mention the mystery and suspense just have you on the edge of your seat. Tomorrow Will Be Different
By: Schrijverr
https://archiveofourown.org/works/56013616
Summary: Instead of managing to meet up later, Oliver has to keep running with Akio. The only way to keep them safe is to go public with Oliver being alive, leaving him back home in charge of Akio, while Tatsu and Maseo are still in the wind. Oliver has to get used to being back home where he doesn’t fit anymore, while also taking care of a child and getting caught up in a larger conspiracy that keeps the existence of the Alpha-Omega virus secret. In the meantime, his primary mission is to reunite Akio with his parents, something that isn’t the easiest when being back from the dead and in the spotlight.
My Comments: This is an ongoing fic that I absolutely love. I loved the bond between Akio and Oliver, and seeing it build and play out is just wonderful. I also love Oliver trying to adapt to life back home after everything he’s been through. The author updates this fic fairly regularly so be sure to keep an eye on it.

What if Oliver Queen still came back to Starling City to right his father’s wrongs, only this time, with a wedding ring and a more emotionally stable mind-set?
My Comments: So while this fic is just starting off, it’s already quickly becoming one of my favorites. Year 3 of the Island was always my favorite, and this concept is just to die for. I love the romance between Oliver and Felicity. And even more I love Tommy and Thea in this, while they’re trying to figure out why Oliver’s so different. God I just love this fic. Comics this week (4/21/2021)?
Superman: Red and Blue #2: I got the sweet David Choe variant cover I was hoping for! A win. The Seagle/Douleau/Brosseau story was...odd, character-wise, the Brown/Cowan/Stanisci/Sotomayor/Sharpe story was a fun adventure with some neat ideas but felt surprisingly light given this was the first use of Val-Zod in however long, the Phillips/Zarcone/Leigh story was the exact story you’re always going to get with every Superman anthology ever from now until the end of time, and the Howard/Napolitano final entry was fun and also happened to nail pretty much exactly how I’d like Cyborg Superman to be portrayed. The clear standout however was Dan Panosian’s Luthor story, a total hoot.
Justice League #60: We’re starting to get rolling on the vibe of the team dynamic here if not especially the plot, but keep giving me those pretty Marquez drawings over Bendis-chatter and those delightful V/Xermanico Justice League Dark backups and I’m more than good.
Catwoman #30: Ok I kept saying I was waiting for V and Blanco’s tack for this run to reveal itself, and that it’s “Selina WANTS to be in a nice Brubaker/Cooke run where she’s comfy, but dopey Batman shit keeps creeping in around the edges and fucking with her equilibrium” is basically EXACTLY what I want to see. And that double pager from Blanco? Baby.
Batman vs. Ra’s Al Ghul #6: I’d reread this if I thought it’d explain anything that happened, but I know it wouldn’t and for that I’m grateful. Could this live up to being the sequel to Batman: Odyssey? No. Is there still an extended sequence where Neal Adams characters, who speak and act like Neal Adams characters, perform a science demonstration? Yes. God, yes.
Haha #4: I liked this one! Definitely the least Ice Cream Man thing Prince has written since he started that, which I note mainly because everything else about his work remains at a steady rate of high quality so it’s that variation that most stands out.
Radiant Black #3: Ok, it’s got me sold through at least the three remaining issues of what’ll be the first trade. This is the most the superhero stuff and the personal work have felt like they meshed, and also the most interested I’ve been in the former thus far.
Ultramega #2: Aw yeah, we’re on that good worldbuilding kick I’m here for.
Orphan and the Five Beasts #2: This issue pivots on the most hilariously nightmarish twist I’ve seen in comics in god knows how long and I am enthralled, even with Stokoe firing on all cylinders I don’t know how he intends to match this issue in the remaining issues.
The Many Deaths of Laila Starr #1: The title on critics’ lips this week, this takes a well-worn “what if a higher being had to live among us miserable meatsacks and learn how rough things can be down here” premise and manages to not just reinvigorate it, but set it up with legs that look like they’ll be carrying it forward for a ways to come. The star of the show is Filipe Andrade, who pivots sharply between rendering the divine mundane and the standard bursting with energy as serves the scene; he actually gave me a bit of a Nick Dragotta vibe here, though the end product is something entirely his own. Not quite my favorite of the week as I know it was for a lot of folks, but I’m in for wherever the long haul takes us.
The Mighty Valkyries #1: I’ve been hoping since Gronbekk started that we’d see more of her clear potential as she was hopefully given more opportunities, and this issue represents a titanic leap in that direction - I was already impressed, but there’s a steady hand and conceptual boldness here that’s leaps and bounds beyond what she was already doing and I’m so glad this book is back to give her the chance to flex these emerging muscles.
Carnage: Black, White & Blood #2: The Zdarsky/Checchetto and V/Fernandez stories are both solid, but this isn’t anybody’s best work.
Avengers #45: Ahh, this is what I was starting to miss from this book. It isn’t good, but it’s definitely the exact kind of high-concept brain droppings Aaron’s versed in that effortlessly short-circuit any normal sense of good taste I might possess.
S.W.O.R.D. #5: I’m following multiple X-Men books, and enjoying seeing threads cross between them. Incredible. Is this what it’s normally like for people who dig these? I can’t see it being enough to build an entire comics-reading identity around them, but it’s a treat nonetheless.
Way of X #1: As someone with complicated feelings on X-Men: Legacy and very uncomplicated feelings on how great Doctor Nemesis is I was really looking forward to what Spurrier would do here, and honestly? One issue in and this feels a lot closer to what I want out of Hickman’s X-Men than that book itself has often delivered. This feels like the perfect balance of what I want out of these books and what people who like X-Men comics *not* by Morrison or Hickman want, and while there’s no way it’ll get the audience it deserves I hope it’ll at least get a sizable enough fraction of it to see it go as long as all involved please.
Eternals #4: An extremely good and dense issue, maybe my favorite in a week with some stupendous competition, that I just don’t have a ton to say about - its virtues are self-evident and we already know that this book is great and the specific kind of great it is. My biggest personal item of note that’s not immediately obvious is that it’s with this issue that it clicked for me for the first time that the expressions Esad Ribic gives his characters remind me a bit of Steve Dillon’s.

After the Return
For the amazing @smoaking-greenarrow
This work is a short sequel/slight continuation your fic Come Back When You Can (https://archiveofourown.org/works/14949939/chapters/34641729). It’s my favorite of all of your stories. I loved the initial premise and what you did with it. The ending was amazing and I kinda wanted to explore what happens next. Hope you enjoy!
-Sincerely @laxit21

Oliver helped Nyssa and the Thanatos Guild defeat Ra’s and returned back to his family. The first 24 hours he’d back don’t quite go the way he hoped.
The same night that Oliver returned from his mission to stop Ra’s, and he discovered Felicity was pregnant again based on her cravings, he got to do something he never thought he’d ever have the chance to. He got to put his son to bed.
Eli was excited that his daddy was home, and understandably reluctant to go to sleep. Daddy was home, now he could see all of the things Eli used to tell him about and they could play with his toys. He didn’t want to go to bed.
“It’s time to go to bed, sweetie.” Felicity told him.
“But Momma! I’m not tired!” He said with a pout. His seriousness was undercut when the five year old let out a yawn.
“Oh, you aren’t tired, huh?” She asked him.
“Nope. ‘Sides Daddy said he’d play trucks with me.”
“You can play tomorrow. Isn’t that right, Daddy?” She said, looking over to Oliver.
Oliver wanted to give in to his son’s adorable expression, but he knew Felicity was probably right. Despite how awake Eli claimed to be, he looked sleepy and yawned again. “I think it’s time for bed, bud, but you know what? We can play all day tomorrow. Whatever you want.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.” Oliver said sincerely. “But it’s bedtime now and you need to go to sleep.”
At the little boy’s insistence, Oliver helped him get ready for bed and tucked him in. Eli asked for a story, so Oliver told him the story of the first time he saw Felicity in his father’s office so many years ago. He finished the story and told Eli goodnight.
“Night Daddy. I’m glad I don’t have to talk to the picture no more.”
“Me too.” Oliver said as he closed the door.
Felicity was standing in the hallway and was openly crying. “Hey, what’s wrong?”
“I didn’t know he did that.” She said sniffling. “He asked me for a picture with you so he could keep it close but- he talked to you every night. He told you about his day and he wished you goodnight and-“
Oliver didn’t say anything but put his arms around his wife. “It’s been an exhausting day, in a good way. I think its time for us to go to bed too.”
“You’re probably right. Eli’s gonna wake you up at the crack of dawn to play.” She admitted. They went to bed and they both fell asleep fairly easily.
Felicity was woken up in the middle of the night by movement. When she was fully awake, she could feel that Oliver was thrashing in the bed next to her, in the midst of a nightmare. He was muttering something in a language she didn’t understand. It sounded like he was pleading with someone.
“Oliver?” She whispered, hoping to wake him up. “Oliver!”
His muttering switched to English. “No, not her. Leave her alone! Felicity!”
“Oliver, you’re having-“ Later, she’d realize how idiotic it was to try and shake him awake. In the moment, all she could see was her husband clearly distressed and wanted to help him. As soon as her hand touched his shoulder, he grabbed her and flipped her over, pinning her beneath him. He was holding her in place, but not causing her any harm beyond that. His eyes were open, but she didn’t think he was fully awake. “Oliver, it’s me.”
He seemed to wake up and scurried to get off of her. “I- I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. I probably shouldn’t have tried to wake you up when you were having a nightmare.” She said. “Are you okay?”
“Am I okay? I could’ve hurt you. I could’ve hurt the baby. I- I should-“ Oliver had messed things up. He could’ve hurt, or worse killed, Felicity or their baby. He shouldn’t have come back here, at least not yet.
“I swear to Google, if you say you should leave or anything like that, I’m gonna shoot you with one of your own arrows.” She said. “it was an accident. Everything’s okay. Stop feeling guilty over it. You spent five years fighting to survive. I wasn’t expecting you to come back and everything be perfect.”
“Still, I shouldn’t- I’m dangerous. What if Will-? Oh god, what if Eli-?” He said.
“Hey, look at me.” Felicity said in a bossy tone. “Nothing’s gonna happen to Will or Eli. You were taken off guard, and we can have a conversation with Eli tomorrow about not surprising Daddy. You were startled, that’s it.” She told him. She was so happy that Oliver was back and she didn’t want him to start pulling away from her or their family because he thought he was a danger to them. “Do you wanna talk about it? Your nightmare?”
“I- he had you. Ra’s al Ghul. He took you because he couldn’t make me forget you. He- all I could do is watch as he slowly killed you.” Oliver admitted.
“It was just a dream. I’m right here. I’m safe, see?” She poked him in the cheek, which earned her a small smile. “And we’re gonna be okay.”
Felicity went back to sleep and Oliver was able to get a few hours before he heard thundering footsteps racing towards them. They were too light to be an adult, but they woke him up nonetheless.
“Hope you’re ready.” Felicity whispered.
“Ready for what?” He asked, right as the door to their room opened.
He felt something jump onto the bed and crawl towards him. “Daddy! Wake up!” Eli said. He could tell that the boy was trying to whisper so that he wouldn’t wake Felicity up, but he didn’t exactly succeed. “It’s time to play.”
“Shh. Momma’s asleep. Let’s not try to wake her up.” Oliver said, sitting up to see his son’s face a few inches from his. “It’s time for breakfast, then we’ll play, okay?”
The boy agreed before bouncing up and down, trying to get Oliver to get out of bed faster. Eli led Oliver to the kitchen, talking a mile a minute about how excited he was to spend the whole day with his father. He tried to talk Oliver into making pancakes, but they didn’t have the right ingredients, so he settled on cereal.
“Which kind?” Oliver asked. “This one?” He held up a box.
“Momma said I can’t have those.”
He looked at the box of Reese’s Puffs. Nothing about the cereal seemed weird or concerning to him. “Why not?”
“Will likes them, but Momma said I was ‘lergic to peanuts and it would make me sick.” Eli said before pointing to another box. “Can I have Coco Pebbles?”
Oliver nodded and brought down the right box. He felt bad that he didn’t know his son was allergic to peanuts. He didn’t even know basic things about his son like what he couldn’t eat. What if he’d given him the cereal without thinking?
“I’m sorry I almost gave you the wrong breakfast.” Oliver said.
“That’s okay. Momma said your head hurts and you don’t ‘member stuff sometimes.”
“Your momma is right.”
“Duh, she’s always right. Momma’s the smartest lady ever.” Eli told him.
“Yes, she is.”
The two Queen boys ate their cereal and Eli pulled Oliver over to where his toy trucks were so they could play. Felicity and Will woke up within the next hour and joined them. As he watched his family go along with Eli’s made-up stories about the cars, Oliver realized something. The Queen family had a long way to go before they were whole again, but they were going to get there just fine.

For the week of 11 November 2019
Quick Bits:
Batman & The Outsiders #7 throws some further ramifications of Ra’s al Ghul and his minions meddling with Duke and Sofia. Some particularly disturbing transformations going on with Duke that should be interesting. The level of intrigue that Bryan Hill is keeping in the story is gripping.
| Published by DC Comics
The Batman’s Grave #2 is another excellent issue. A little more packed with action than the first one, allowing Bryan Hitch to cut loose with some of the sequences. Also, I’m loving the humour that Warren Ellis is giving us between Alfred and Bruce. That acerbic wit is something we’ve seen from Alfred a lot and Ellis just nails the voice.
| Published by DC Comics
Battlepug #3 is more fun from Mike Norton, Allen Passalaqua, and Crank! Some really nice stuff here as Bryony cuts loose on Nobody’s Ponies. I absolutely love the mix of traditional sword and sorcery storytelling with rather over-the-top humour that basically lampoons it at the same time.
| Published by Image
Black Cat Annual #1 is a fun tale of a heist on the Maggia by Black Cat and Spider-Man from Jed MacKay, Joey Vazquez, Natacha Bustos, Juan Gedeon, Brian Reber, and Ferran Delgado. It features the usual humour and action that we see in the series and I quite like how the artists are broken up each following one particular aspect of the story. Though it’s all one narrative, it gives a nice differing feel to each part.
| Published by Marvel
Black Hammer / Justice League: Hammer of Justice #5 concludes what has been an excellent series from Jeff Lemire, Michael Walsh, and Nate Piekos. Ultimately, this has reminded me of the old JLA/JSA crossovers of old, and just feels great as an overall story. Plus the possibility of seeing a sequel.
| Published by Dark Horse & DC Comics
Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda #3 begins “God Loves, Moon Kills”, another two-parter for this series, from Jim Zub, Lan Medina, Craig Yeung, Marcio Menyz, Federico Blee, and Joe Sabino. I love this story format, giving us essentially quick-hit missions dealing with a problem and then moving on. It’s yielded some pretty tight storytelling and some fascinating situations.
| Published by Marvel
Black Stars Above #1 is another incredible debut for Vault, with Lonnie Nadler, Jenna Cha, Brad Simpson, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou delivering an incredibly deep and unique horror story. It centres around a young woman in a family of fur traders, as the trade itself begins to die in Canada, and it’s impressive as to how real the characters and their struggle feels. The artwork from Cha and Simpson is exquisite.

Buffy + Angel: Hellmouth #2 continues Buffy and Angel’s descent through hell. It’s much more cerebral than you’d expect, with the demons trying to get into Buffy and Angel’s respective heads in order to manipulate and destroy them. Plus, a rather interesting surprise. Jordie Bellaire, Jeremy Lambert, Eleonora Carlini, Cris Peter, and Ed Dukeshire are doing some great work with the core of this event.

Collapser #5 somehow gets even stranger in this penultimate issue as Liam creates a “perfect” world to run away from the problems he’s having in the real world. The real world bleeding through and a revelation of his girlfriend’s true intentions just ratchet up the strangeness further. Mikey Way, Shaun Simon, Ilias Kyriazis, Cris Peter, and Simon Bowland are just doing amazing work here.

Detective Comics #1015 takes an interesting turn as Nora decides that she likes being a villain. Through this, Peter J. Tomasi is definitely showing an interesting side to Mr. Freeze, emphasizing again that he’s a rather conflicted villain, only doing the various heinous actions to save his wife. Who now doesn’t need him.
| Published by DC Comics
Doctor Mirage #4 features more incredibly beautiful, inventive artwork from Nick Robles and Jordie Bellaire. The visual storytelling as Shan faces the Embalmer is just incredible. Magdalene Visaggio, Robles, Bellaire, and Dave Sharpe continue to deliver magic with this penultimate issue.
| Published by Valiant
Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Terror: Season Two #2 is another entertaining issue. The lead tale from Tom Peyer, Greg Scott, Lee Loughridge, and Rob Steen has traditional EC Comics horror vibes, as a scientist tries to communicate with our worm overlords. In one of the comics back-ups Mark Russell, Peter Snejbjerg, and Steen revisit the world of the breakfast cereal monsters. And there’s the usual prose pieces, poetry, and Hunt Emerson’s Black Cat.
| Published by Ahoy
Event Leviathan #6 concludes this series from Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, and Josh Reed. How much you enjoy it will hinge on how much you enjoy Maleev’s art and the realization that most of this tale is about moving one person off the board and the reveal of Leviathan to set up further stories. Also, Bendis paints a Batman who is ridiculously terrible at hiding his secret identity.

Fallen Angels #1 is the final new first issue of this first wave of “Dawn of X” titles and in many ways it’s more personal than the other X-titles, even Excalibur, delving into Psylocke (the former Kwannon, not Betsy Braddock) and her past. Bryan Hill, Szymon Kudranski, Frank D’Armata, and Joe Sabino deliver an interesting story with hooks on the darker side of the X-world, including some ominous bits from Magneto and Sinister, but I question the inclusion of X-23 and Cable. They don’t exactly seem to fit the roles they’ve been put into here.
| Published by Marvel
Family Tree #1 is a phenomenal debut from Jeff Lemire, Phil Hester, Eric Gapstur, Ryan Cody, and Steve Wands. This first issue perfectly captures that insidious nature of family drama mixed with creeping terror and body horror as a bizarre plague begins spreading across America.
| Published by Image
Far Sector #1 is one of the most impressive debuts I’ve read in a long time. NK Jemisin, Jamal Campbell, and Deron Bennett create a rich new world in the City Enduring and a compelling character in the new Green Lantern, Sojourner Mullein. The murder mystery that ties everything together is just the icing on the cake. Incredible world-building here and drop dead gorgeous artwork. Do not miss this.
| Published by DC Comics / Young Animal
The Flash #82 is part one of “Rogues’ Reign” from Joshua Williamson, Rafa Sandoval, Jordi Tarragona, Arif Prianto, and Steve Wands. It features a Central City taken over by the Rogues, transformed into their own personal playgrounds, as the Flash is nowhere to be found. It’s not bad, but the amount you’re going to like it may be relative to how much you’re also enjoying “City of Bane” and the recently concluded similar arc involving the Trickster.
| Published by DC Comics
Folklords #1 is off to a fantastic start from Matt Kindt, Matt Smith, Chris O’Halloran, and Jim Campbell. It starts off with a precocious kid in a fantasy world who’s been having visions of what essentially amounts to our world, whose quest sets out a rather draconian lockdown on their society when the Librarians rein in everyone from illicit action, like finding the Folklords. Highly recommended.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Forgotten Home #2 reveals more about Jannada, its history and society, and how an unjust queen was brought to rule through racial warfare. Love the artwork from Marika Cresta and Matt Emmons.
| Published by Vices Press
Gideon Falls #18 unleashes the Laughing Man on reality in part two of “The Pentoculus”. Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino, Dave Stewart, and Steve Wands are beautifully unfolding this twisted and horrific flower of a story.
| Published by Image
Gotham City Monsters #3 adds another element of DC lore to the series as Melmoth claims a particular prize. I really quite like how Steve Orlando, Amancay Nahuelpan, Trish Mulvihill, and Tom Napolitano are pulling together disparate bits of Gotham and beyond to craft this story.
| Published by DC Comics
Guardians of the Galaxy #11 is the penultimate issue of this series from Donny Cate, Cory Smith, Victor Olazaba, David Curiel, and Cory Petit. It’s basically a big fight between the remaining Guardians and everyone else. It doesn’t go so well.
| Published by Marvel
Hawkman #18 takes a somewhat different approach to Hawkman’s infection than what we’ve seen of the others so far. Rather than being a dark reflection of Hawkman’s own desires, he’s taken over by an Earth-3 incarnation in Sky Tyrant. Robert Venditti, Pat Olliffe, Tom Palmer, Jeremiah Skipper, and Richard Starkings & Comicraft instead use that to play the spirit of our Hawkman against.
| Published by DC Comics
Hit-Girl: Season Two #10 is part two of “India”. The artwork from Alison Sampson and Tríona Farrell is impressive, given an amazing level of detail to bringing Mumbai to life. Brutal and rich in colour.
| Published by Image
House of Whispers #15 takes a new twist as the Corinthian finds the House of Watchers, takes over, and everything changes. Nalo Hopkinson, Dan Watters, Dominike “Dono” Stanton, Zac Atkinson, and AndWorld Design kick off some new terrors as even Erzulie’s status quo is upended, and we get another guest appearance of John Constantine’s homecoming.
| Published by DC Comics - Black Label / The Sandman Universe
Invaders #11 pushes deeper into Steve and Namor’s history and relationship, as Steve refuses to give up on his old friend. There’s some very heavy, very good character work here as we head into the final issue. Chip Zdarsky, Carlos Magno, Butch Guice, Alex Guimarães, and Travis Lanham continue to astonish at the incredibly high bar they’ve set for this story.
| Published by Marvel
Justice League Odyssey #15 is a fun tale from Dan Abnett, Will Conrad, Rain Beredo, Pete Pantazis, and AndWorld Design. Jessica Cruz leading a rag tag band of villains (and Orion) against Darkseid and the previous JLO turned evil is unfolding as a very entertaining story with some interesting twists. Also, Dex-Starr is awesome.
| Published by DC Comics
Morbius #1 isn’t a bad start from Vita Ayala, Marcelo Ferreira, Roberto Poggi, Dono Sánchez-Almara, and Clayton Cowles. This first issue is largely just action as Morbius sets out on his quest to cure himself, again, but it’s not bad. The art from Ferreira, Poggi, and Sánchez-Almara is very nice.
| Published by Marvel
Oblivion Song #21 continues the slowburn investigation and reconnaissance of the Faceless Men’s base, as Marco tries to map it out and discover where they’re holding all of the people who decided to stay in Oblivion. Gorgeous artwork from Lorenzo De Felici and Annalisa Leoni as we see more of the Faceless Men’s technology.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Psi-Lords #6 does a bit more world-building as we find out more about the Psi-Lords and the Starwatchers, even as the four Earthers are beset by the other Marked in a bizarre farce of a trial. Fred Van Lente, Renato Guedes, and Dave Sharpe are telling a pretty great sci-fi adventure tale here. It largely stands alone in the greater Valiant universe framework and deserves more attention than its getting.
| Published by Valiant
Punisher: Soviet #1 is another welcome return to the Punisher by Garth Ennis, stepping back into Frank’s adventures like he never left. Ennis, Jacen Burrows, Guillermo Ortego, Nolan Woodard, and Rob Steen deliver a brutal and bloody beginning as Frank chases down someone who everyone seems to think is him.
| Published by Marvel / MAX
Reaver #5 is a fairly impressive spotlight for Breaker as he does what he really didn’t want to do again in order to help his “friends”. Justin Jordan, Rebekah Isaacs, Alex Guimarães, and Clayton Cowles present a number of twists and surprises in one of the most brutal issues yet.
| Published by Image / Skybound
Ronin Island #8 sees the remaining islanders largely stand together as they try to both stand up to and flee from the Shogun’s soldiers and madness. With a terrible occurrence that looks like it’s going to cause even more problems for the survivors. Giannis Milonogiannis and Irma Kniivila’s art continues to be everything.
| Published by BOOM! Studios
Sea of Stars #5 very nicely puts the pieces together as a disconsolate Gil has been captured and basically given up thinking Kadyn dead is brought to the world where his son is about to be gutted. Jason Aaron, Dennis Hallum, Stephen Green, Rico Renzi, and Jared K. Fletcher are telling an incredible story here and this issue throws even more twists at the reader.
| Published by Image
Seven Days #2 unfolds some of the fallout of people learning that they only have seven days left, as the superhero community is enlisted to try to stop whatever the shiny harbinger things are. Gail Simone, José Luís, Jonas Trinidade, Michelle Madsen, and Saida Temofonte are continuing to build an intriguing story here as we get more and more of the breadth of the Catalyst Prime universe.
| Published by Lion Forge / Catalyst Prime
Superman #17 is kind of a housekeeping issue from Brian Michael Bendis, Kevin Maguire, Paul Mounts, and Dave Sharpe, acting as a prologue to “The Truth”. A bit of reflection on the Unity Saga, Event Leviathan, and Year of the Villain.
| Published by DC Comics
Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Blackest Night #1 might well be the best of these one-shots yet. Tim Seeley, Kyle Hotz, Dexter Vines, Walden Wong, Danny Miki, David Baron, Allen Passalaqua, and Tom Napolitano give us a bleak look at a world where Sinestro chose not to share the power of the White Lantern light and essentially everything fell to Nekron and the Black Lanterns. It’s a very unique take on the zombie apocalypse on its own, made more interesting as a fallen Sinestro, Lobo, and Dove try to save this universe. The art from Hotz, Vines, Wong, Miki, Baron, and Passalaqua is perfect.
| Published by DC Comics
Trees: Three Fates #3 continues to build up the weird atmosphere from last issue, then turns around and focuses on more of the gritty aspects of Oleg, Mik, and Nina. Gorgeous artwork all throughout from Jason Howard and Dee Cunniffe.
| Published by Image
Triage #3 shifts to Commander Marco’s reality as the group flee from the Hunter. I really like what Phillip Sevy and Frank Cvetkovic have been doing with this story. Great high concept, but the interpersonal relationships are where it’s really at.
| Published by Dark Horse
Usagi Yojimbo #6 is a beautiful updating and embellishment of the very first story of Usagi from Albedo by Stan Sakai and Tom Luth. This single issue story really captures the spirit and magic of all of Sakai’s stories, wonderfully portraying his mix of action and folklore.
| Published by IDW
Vampirella/Red Sonja #3 explores more of what the Russians were doing in regards to Drakulon and more. More very nice humour from Jordie Bellaire in the interactions between Vampirella and Sonja.
| Published by Dynamite
Wonder Woman #82 begins “The Wild Hunt” from the new creative team of Steve Orlando, Kieran McKeown, Scott Hanna, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Pat Brosseau. It very much continues on from the plot threads and elements of the previous run, continuing to build on the current conflict between Wonder Woman and Cheetah.
| Published by DC Comics
X-Men #2 is pretty damn great, going back to the big and wild ideas bringing new elements into the X-universe, all while Cyclops gives some of the strangest parenting. Jonathan Hickman, Leinil Francis Yu, Garry Alanguilan, Sunny Gho, and Clayton Cowles give us a new mystery with the arrival of Arakko and the first of -|A|-’s missing original horsemen.

Writing Updates/Coming Up
After seven wonderful months, Robins and Other Flightless Birds will be wrapping up over the next week. So I thought now would be a good time to talk about what’s happening next!
· I’m mostly finished writing Rebirth, which is a fairly short fic about Talia being a mom to Damian, Jason, and Cass before reconnecting with Bruce. Features Good Mom!Talia, Toddler!Damian, Catatonic!Jason, Asian!Jason, and happy family hanging out in London.
· Soon I will be posting the first part of my Oz Project! This is something I’ve been working on for a very long time; it will eventually be a 14-part story about the ruler of Oz, based on L. Frank Baum’s Oz series. Features a genderqueer protagonist, the awesome Dorothy Gale, and a bunch of other cool stuff! Since The Wizard of Oz and all 13 of the sequels by the original author are well outside of copyright, this is a story that I could potentially sell someday. However, the first few parts, at least, are going to be available online. They’ll be posted on my dedicated Oz blog and on AO3, as they are still technically fanfiction. If you’ve enjoyed my Bat-fic, I really recommend you check this out when it becomes available! The Oz fandom on AO3 is definitely not huge, but this is not something you need any Oz-knowledge to understand and enjoy!
· My next Bat-fic project, We’re All Mad Here, is about Jason (post-Under the Red Hood) and Tim (post-Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker flashback) being roommates in the juvenile section of Arkham. Features almost everyone’s covers being blown and Jay and Tim just doing their best to take care of themselves (and eventually each other) when they don’t really know what’s going down in the outside world.
· Eventually there will be a sequel to Robins and Other Flightless Birds. It is called Crooked Arrows Flown True, and is still about the Bats, but also about Roy Harper. The first chapter is written, and will be posted on Tumblr soon. It won’t be posted on AO3 until I’ve finished some of the above projects, and can commit to a regular update schedule.
· Eventually there will also be a sequel to It’s Not That Funny, tentatively titled Maybe Someday We’ll Laugh Again. Jason and Tim continue to heal and reconnect with old friends, Jason and Damian bond awkwardly, and there is significantly more Cass. Also pretty far down on the list, though you can find scattered bits and pieces tagged “It’s Not That Funny” on Tumblr.
· I’m working very slowly on an original novel called The Witch Beneath the Stair, which features a hedgewitch and her son, a queen without a name, the medieval equivalent of a roadtrip, and a complicated magical/political system I came up with to avoid naming my characters.
· I’m also working on a sort of really depressing sequel to Swan Lake.
· There may possibly be a prequel and/or sequel to the title story in my book, which is a collection of seven fairy tale retellings that you should totally check out if you’ve enjoyed my fic! The title story is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, exploring the connection between identity, appearance, and intellect and addressing consequences of sexual abuse and parental neglect. Again, I’ve gone way out of my way to avoid giving characters names.
· Eventually I’m going to write a very long, involved series of Bat-fic beginning with Bruce’s adoption of Dick and going through pretty much the whole family. At least 7 parts, very difficult to finish because I keep wanting to write out of order, sympathetic to nearly every single character who isn't the Joker or Ra’s al Ghul, because I hate them. Basically the grown-up version of the Batman movies I watched in my head on long bike rides in high school. Snippets are occasionally posted on Tumblr.

Pokemon Bat
https://jaredmithrandirolorin.blogspot.com/2018/09/pokemon-bat.html
This is an idea for a Pokemon Rom Hack. I’d like it to be a Third Generation Romhack (Mainly LeafGreen) in-spite of the fact that one 4th generation Pokemon gets name dropped. I can't make it myself so I encourage someone else to elaborate on the basic ideas I'm laying out here. The region is called Gotham You play as Bruce Wayne, a ten year old. It is the two year anniversary of your Parents being gunned down in front of you by Pokemon thieves. After having a nightmare about it you run into the woods behind your house and fall into a cave where you befriend a Zubat, and decide to go off on a Pokemon journey, the Zubat becomes your starter Pokemon. Your Butler Alfred Pennyworth will function as both Bill and Oak, managing all the PC stuff for you. And Jim Gordon will play the role of Looker. The rival character is Selina Kyle, who’s starter Pokemon is a Meowth. The evil team in this one is more like Team Rocket, being mainly interested in money as opposed to later Teams that are basically cults. It is called Team Umbrella, and it’s leader is known as The Empoleon of Crime. His real identity is Oswald Cobblepot, a trainer of Bird Pokemon who runs a Pokestop called the Iceberg Lounge, that among other things houses the Ice Type gym. He won’t actually have an Empoleon on him though, this game’s roster should be limited to Pokemon you can use in LeafGreen. He is particularly obsessed with the Bird Type Legendary Pokemon, which includes the Kanto Trio and Ho-Oh. The Gym Leader of the IceBerg Lounge gym is Victor Fries. The other 7 Gym leaders include, Drury Walker, the Bug Type Gym leader, Lester Buchinsky, the Electric Type Gym leader and Joe Rigger, the Fire Type Gym Leader. I like including the three filler bosses of the Batman 89 NES game in any Batman video game ideas I come up with. Pamela Isley, the Grass/Poison Type Gym Leader. Jonathan Crane, the Ghost Type Gym Leader. Jervis Tetch, the Psychic Type Gym Leader. Natalia Mitternacht, Dark Type Gym Leader. The Elite Four will be League of Assassins Members, Bane (Fighting type), Onyx (Rock Type) Bronze Tiger (Steel Type), and Lady Shiva (Dragon Type). And the Champion will be Ra’s Al Ghul. Who’s Pokemon team will actually be the Legendary Beasts, Lugia, Celebi and Mew who he mentions was his starter centuries ago. I feel like that fits his Eco Terrorist agenda. What I'm doing with Ra's here is the most unprecedented in Canon Pokemon, having any NPC use Legenderies. (Though in Stadium a Rocket Grunt has a Moltress). Ra's Immortality is why I feel it works. It's sometimes implied that Mew is something that wasn't so rare in the distant past. I thought about referencing that immortality gimmick with an all Fossil Pokemon team, but decided that'd be more Vandal Savage, plus Fossils are all part Rock so don't have enough type variety for a Champion. The Johto Legendries have been the most strongly tied to the franchise's environmentalist themes so I see them fitting Ra's the best. Plus in this version of the Unvierse these character are not necessarily Evil. There will be an Unknown cave in the game where they are being researched by Edward Nygma who trains them exclusively, you can battle him but it’s not required. It’s companion Game is Pokemon Cat, where everything is the same except you play as Selina and Bruce is the Rival. And a different Origin story, someone else will have to write that. And Holly Robinson (your friend with benefits) will replace Alfred. I made a conscience decision not to shoehorn in every Batman villain, Black Mask, Two-Face, Deadshot, are all ones that wouldn’t work in this premise. Sorry @about-faces And that goes double for The Joker. There are many great Batman stories with no Joker in them. So given the Joker overload of the Arkham Games I figured a video game Batman universe that opts out of forcing in The Joker would be nice. Those left out can also be viewed as being saved for a possible Sequel. I was limiting this to the Pokemon available in the Advanced Generation games which are what I’m most Nostalgic for. It would be easier to come up with a Two-Face story-line in the Black and White Generation where the core Legendary Pokemon are Yin-Yang themed which makes them a fitting target for Two-Face. Other Pokemon that tend to come in duality themed pairs include Plusle and Minun (the first Pika clones), and Espeon and Umbreon the second Gen Eveelutions who are thematically day and night, (that factors into why they’re used in Pokemon Colosseum). He could also be someone who only fights in double battles. Hell, thematically the Sun and Moon generation fits my Bat & Cat contrast better with the Mascot Legendaries being a Solar Lion and a Lunar Bat. A Joker based Pokemon trainer would like have a pair of Poochyena/Mightyena as homages to The Joker’s Hyenas, and maybe he'd have interest in a Mr.Mime or Mime Jr.

Batman Villain Movie Ideas, Part XXI: Carmine Falcone
Strictly speaking, this post is for all of the general mob boss/crime lord types floating around the Batman-verse, such as Sal Maroni, Roland Daggett, Rupert Thorne, all those guys. Carmine seems to be generally the most popular, so we'll focus on him. Like Bruno Mannheim and Intergang, these characters primarily exist to be the "standard criminals" for Batman to fight when he's not fighting one of the more colorful rogues. Carmine, specifically, is known for being the head of the Falcone family, and loosely based on Don Vito Corleone. He also might be the illegitimate father of Catwoman both in the comics and, at least, The Batman's continuity. Sal Maroni is also generally known for being the guy who made Harvey Dent Two-Face.
Origin Movie: In theory, that's basically what Batman Begins did, at least for the first half of the movie or so, until he was upstaged by Scarecrow and Ra's al-Ghul. And yeah, if you want a more grounded take on Batman without all the colorful characters, Falcone or Thorne or whoever would probably be the best pick for that. (Also in that theoretical horror movie from the perspective of the bad guys, I'd assume that the main protagonists would be one of these guys and their men).
Sequel Movie: I don't know why you'd start out on one of the more colorful villains and then downgrade to one of these. Seems a little unbalanced. Unless it's just a reversal of what we laid out with Victor Zsasz last time, with the serial killer up front and then the mob boss after. One thought though, is maybe a trilogy building up to Two-Face as the finale villain, then I suppose Sal Maroni could work as the villain here.
Finale Movie: I suppose with him being the big bad mob boss, it's not unreasonable for him to be built towards at the end of a series, something like all the other villains prior working under his gang or something. More or less what Black Mask would do.
Supporting Villain: This is the best place for these characters, I think. Mooks and thugs that Batman would spend his time taking down as the more colorful villains rise to prominence as a third party creating complications.
Overall, here are my rankings of them:
Supporting Villain: It's what these characters are designed for.
Origin Movie: I so want to see that horror film.
Finale Movie: The big bad boss angle has possibilities, but there are better characters for it.
Sequel Movie: It just wouldn't work.
What do you think? Who should I cover next?

I think the main issue here is that, when people say they ship Brutalia or want her to have a good relationship with Damian, they aren't really talking about it based off more modern comics or, in Damian's case, hardly any comics that include him. This is because most of the people who say that are fans of Pre-Morrison Talia (the version of her character from before Morrison character-assassinated her) and Morrison's terrible, out-of-the-blue evil characterization of her (which they have admitted themself that they failed to even read Batman: Son of the Demon, the comic they were supposedly basing their stuff off of, before doing) has affected so many writers afterwards that, ever since 2006, there's been almost no good comics with her at all.
Because of this, although I can suggest some decent older Brutalia comics for you to try, I can't suggest a ton for Damian and Talia's relationship. At the end of the day, she abused him, and even killed him that one time, which makes their relationship bumpy at best, even though absolutely none of that was the slightest bit in character for her pre-morrison characterization.
Also, to be clear, I would not consider myself a HUGE expert on Talia. There are plenty of way more qualified people to be doing this, but it just seems like my input is better than no one's.
So first off, the good older brutalia comics I was talking about:
-Detective Comics #411, #485, #750, and Annual 1
-Batman #244 and Annual 8
-The Batman Adventures #13 and #29
-Batman: Son of the Demon
-Batman: Bride of the Demon
-Batman Chronicles #8
-JLA: Tower of Babel
-Batman/Spiderman (Don't like Talia's characterization in general in this much, but the brutalia itself is decent)
-Batman: The Animated Series Episodes 44, 57, 58, and 69 (I know I technically said comics, but it's still connected)
-Batman: Brotherhood of the Bat (as well as the sequel, Batman: League of Batmen) has some heavy mentions/flashbacks to Brutalia (even though Bruce is technically dead in this universe), and it is also Pre-Morrison, so it kind of connects to this list. But even more importantly, although it does not include Damian because as I already said, Pre-Morrison, it does include a ton of Talia's more original, true-to-her-character parenting skills with the way that she treats Tallant Wayne-Al Ghul.
But obviously, that's kind of limited, and even though Morrison screwed everything up pretty bad, there are some decent technically-post-morrison stuff that basically mimicks pre-morrison in its own way, so I'll list some of that stuff here:
-Batman: The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul (includes both some light brutalia and her parenting towards Damian, both done in a much more true-to-her-character way)
-Batman Odyssey (2010) #3 (I wouldn't recommend reading the rest of this series though, Talia's characterization gets less good in even just the next issue, and overall this comic is just... absolutely awful lol)
-Batman: Li'l Gotham #11 and #21 (slight brutalia, but mostly her relationship with Damian just being... much more wholesome than normal)
-Young Justice (2011) #11-#12 (This Brutalia is genuinely more well-written than even some Pre-Morrison stuff, so it's definitely decent. No Damian, though.)
-The Batman and Scooby Doo Mysteries #5 (just more Brutalia, unfortunately. Her parenting is harder to find good stuff with, even post-morrison)
I'm probably forgetting some (or honestly a lot of) stuff, but eh... hopefully some of this is helpful.
I do not see the appeal of Talia and Bruce being a couple. I don’t really see the appeal of Talia being in Damian’s life.
To be fair I’ve barely read Damian’s comics and know little of his and Talia’s relationship. Same with her relationship with Bruce.
I’ve asked people to explain how she’s a good lover and mother and literally no one as answered me. If I could be pointed to some comics or anything like that that would help me understand I’d love that but ahhh

Cinematic Comic Characters Ranked! (Year 2005) Final Part
Another year, another ranking of our favorite comic book characters to grace the movie screen! This year we have the debut of several movies including: Aeon Flux, Batman Begins, Constantine, Fantastic Four, and Sin City; a spin-off movie centered on Elektra; and the final installment to an outer space trilogy, Star Wars: Episode Three-Revenge of the Sith! Here’s TOP 25!
*SPOILERS FOR ALL THE MOVIES HIGHLIGHTED ABOVE*
25. Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow (Batman Begins)
"There's nothing to fear but fear itself!"
The second-class criminal that becomes a threat to Batman in a new way. Even though Bruce trained his body physically to withstand anything, he had no preparation to deal with Scarecrow's fear toxin, an attack on the mind. It's Scarecrows toxin that threatens to destory all of Gotham via terrified citizens but it's clear he's not the one pulling the strings. When the toxin starts infecting people, Scarecrow goes on a terror spree until Rachel shuts him down with a taser to the face.
24. Satan (Constantine)
"Looks like someone doesn't have your back anymore."
Don't quite understand why Satan's feet are dipped in black paint all the time but this man is P-E-T-T-Y. John brings him in to save the day (it took me a minute to wrap that around my head too) and that's kinda what he does. He stops his son from trying to overthrow him and take over Earth and he puts the smack down on Gabriel. He really wants John in hell though so before he goes to heaven he brings him back to life so he could sin again because the man is what? PETTY!
23. Hartigan (Sin City)
"An old man dies. A young woman lives. A fair trade."
Hartigan is what I wanted Marv to be. Doing what needs to be done and stopping the bad guy because it's the right thing to do, not because he got great sex. He dedicated to stopping the pervs that keep going after Nancy and asks for nothing in return, he even turns down sex, which proves he isn't a perv either! I don't really think he had to go kill himself but he looked like he wasn't going to last long anyway so at least he went out nobly.
22. Abby Miller (Elektra)
"I don't respond well to authority and I don't take bullshit."
Abby is that annoying little sister you never had. As soon as she meets Elektra she wants to be just like her. She wants to learn how to kill, she wants to use sais, and she also wears her hair the same way. Turns out she's the "Treasure" which is a big deal for both sides. She knows how to fight with a fancy chain and her witty banter with Elektra is adorable so I definitely was happy when she was saved.
21. Rachel Dawes (Batman Begins)
"But it's not who you are underneath, it's what you do that defines you."
I like Rachel and she is a huge reason as to why Batman exists. She knows Gotham is falling apart and she decides to help save it in her own way: the courtroom. She becomes a great lawyer in the DA and won't back down when criminals try to scare her. She also lets Bruce know the huge difference between vengeance and justice and shows Bruce that fighting for the greater good is better than just fighting for yourself. I think this is also why she finds out his identity by the end of the film while most romantic interests like Mary Jane haven't found out their heroes identities until the sequels.
20. Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic (Fantastic Four)
"I found a broken gasket from space."
Mr. Fantastic is the most boring out of the Fantastic Four, in my opinion. His flexible powers are really handy and make him near indestructible as long as you don't freeze him, but that's kinda it? He's mainly valued for his brains and it's the only thing he relied on when the team went up against Dr. Doom. Seriously, all he did was bark orders while Sue, Johnny, and Ben did all the heavy lifting.
19. Mace Windu (Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith)
"May the Force be with us all."
Mace Windu is a boss. He knows how to shut shit down and if Anakin hadn't been a total back stabber (or hand slicer, really), none of the problems they're facing would've been a thing. Instead, Mace gets betrayed and killed by twp people he considered allies.
18. Gabriel (Constantine)
"You're fucked."
I kinda see Grabriel's frustrations in the film. Why should rapists go to heaven just because they repent? Like where's the justice in that? Do I think all humans need to prove their goodness by having Satan's son bring Armageddon to Earth? Absolutely not. Gabriel definitely goes a little insane and because he tries to help Satan Jr., God takes away his wings and makes him human.
17. Sithandra (Aeon Flux)
"You taught me a lot more than that."
Sithandra is a rebel and Aeon's best friend. She had a cool surgery done that replaced her feet with two extra hands. Her loyalty to Aeon is tested when it seems Aeon betrayed the rebels but their friendship prevails as she leads a team of rebels to protect Aeon and Trevor from Oren. Too bad she runs out of bullets just as Oren sends a missile her way, killing her in front of Aeon.
16. Chas Kramer (Constantine)
"You were right, John. It's not like in the books."
I was so angry when Chas died! Like here we have this young kid that just wants to help and actually does help in a huge way. At first all he does is drive John around in a taxi and fails miserably to get into Midnite's club, but turns out he really did his reading. When John couldn't muster up the chant to stop Satan Jr.'s birth, Chas came in and saved the day. And then he died, very brutally.
15. Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader (Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith)
"You underestimate my power!"
Anakin is the type of person who will literally do every shitty thing possible and then still try to make himself the victim. Like how can you justify calling the Jedi evil when you're out here killing children? He even admits he wants all the power in the world to Padme but still tries to act like the Jedi are selfish when Obi-Wan confronts him. Wack! I'm glad he burned to a crisp and I straight up GIGGLED when he got his legs sliced off (Obi-Wan literally told him not to and he does it anyway). He SOMEHOW survives and is transformed into the dangerous Darth Vader that fans of the series have come to know him by.
14. Gail (Sin City)
"Always and never."
I knew I was going to like Gail as soon as she listed tying people up in chairs as one of her specialties. She seems to be the leader of the prostitutes that run Old Town and isn't afraid to get her hands dirty. I think she actually prefers it, which is why I think its accurate that Dwight dubbed her as "Valkyrie." Only thing off about her, for me, was her relationship with Dwight. I mean it seemed obvious she was into him from the get go but I kinda hoped they didn't end up together.
13. Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Fantastic Four)
"I can't believe I'm doing this again!"
Sue is still in love with Richard but since he isn't willing to courageously take their relationship to where it needed to go, she ended it and tried to move on with the douchebag known as Victor. After the space storm she learns she can not only turn invisible, but she can also create force fields. She spends most her time figuring out where she stands with Richard in their new lives as superheroes but when it comes down to the fighting she's quick and ready to get her hands dirty. Was the proposal a bit rushed at the end? Maybe, but it's clear her and Richard were meant for each other so positive vibes to them.
12. Alfred (Batman Begins)
"What is the point of all those push-ups if you can't even lift a bloody log?"
Alfred is way more than just Bruce Wayne's butler. After his parents are killed he basically takes responsibility over him and raises him. Now that Bruce is a grown adult and bringing the Batman to life, Alfred starts going on his own secret reason. While Ra's Al Ghul is teaching Bruce how to become a legend, something that will never die, Alfred is doing whatever he can to make sure Bruce doesn't lose his humanity. He keeps wanting him to enjoy life and embrace who he is when he isn't wearing the cowl.
11. Aeon Flux (Aeon Flux)
"We're meant to die, that's what makes anything about us matter."
Aeon is the best assassin working with the rebels. After the government kills her sister she's the one they send to take down their leader, Trevor Goodchild. Turns out he's actually good and used to be married to Aeon before the whole world fell apart. She has some really neat gadgets like tiny marbles that explode, shiny egg looking things that disrupt all technology, and she can make her eye pupil grow so she can see if someone spiked her drink. Plus she can do a bunch of flips and knows how to use a gun. It turns out she was meant to destroy everything about the society she lived in and lead it's people to the world outside, one they thought was a wasteland but turned out to be rich with nature and plant life.
10. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars: Epidsode III-Revenge of the Sith)
"You were the chosen one!"
Obi-Wan Kenobi wasn't as condescending as he was in the last film so that was nice. In fact I think he was very much on his way to seeing Anakin as his true equal until Anakin decided to turn to the Dark Side. His infamous speech to Anakin after he's forced to take him down is pretty sad, he really cared about the other dude and it sucks to see someone you care about ruin themselves like Anakin did.
9. Dwight (Sin City)
"I'm Shellie's new boyfriend and I'm out of my mind."
So he starts off his chapter in a relationship with Shellie, fighting for her honor and then ends his chapter in a relationship with Gail, shooting down all his enemies. Besides him being a bit of a player, he was actually my favorite hero in all the stories. He's not ridiculously unbeatable like Marv and has more of a personalty than Hartigan. He actually admits to needing help from Gail and Miho to stop his enemies. He's obviously pretty smart because he's able to come up with plans left and right once things keep getting shittier which is also nice because I feel like everyone else just goes about things guns ablazing. He does to, but I like that he has back up plans.
8. Elektra (Elektra)
"I died once."
Back from the dead, Elektra has turned into a deadly assassin with no emotion or attachments to anyone. To save her from this dark path, Stick has her tricked into protecting Abby from the Hand, a bunch of evil assassins. She takes care of them no problem, like it seems like she's afraid but when she faces them she pretty much kills them all with no problems. Despite the movie being kinda lame it was so good to finally see Elektra in her red outfit kicking ass with her pair of sai. Like most characters in the Daredevil universe, her tv counterpart ends up being a better version, but unlike the others I would go on record to say that movie Elektra wasn't bad, she was just decent.
7. Yoda (Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith)
"At an end your rule is, and not short enough was it."
Yoda is my favorite and only because he really knows how to throw down when he needs to. Like some people try to talk the bad guy into seeing the error of his ways. Nope, not Yoda. He literally always just shows up and is like "So, we're fighting." Except, he mixes up his speech while he does it. His fight against the Emperor was epic and he totally won until the other got to his safety net of soldiers. Still, Yoda accepted failure with grace and decided to leave into exile.
6. Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Fantastic Four)
"Flame on!"
I feel like Johnny represents a lot of us in a situation where we discover we have powers and basically lose our minds because we've decided we're going to be superheroes. Like he changes their outfits, gives them their superhero names and basically creates the brand that is Fantastic Four because he's so excited to be a superhero. His fire/flying abilities definitely help feed the flame that is his confidence as he skyrockets to celebrity status via extreme sports and indulges in the pleasures of his female fans. Still, when it's time to actually be hero, he's there and ready to take on Doom, using his Super Nova heat to melt the metal man away.
5. Ducard/Ra's Al Ghul (Batman Begins)
"If someone stands in the way of true justice, you simply walk up behind them and stab them in the heart."
Ra's Al Ghul is the leader of the League of Shadows, a clan that serves their own justice against those who break the law. Wanting to take down Gotham, the international city of crime, he ends up training the city's prince, Bruce Wayne. Using the death of Wayne's parents as a tool, Al Ghul ends up basically creating the Batman. He's the one that really drills into Bruce's head that he won't fix anything as just a single man. Of course, his methods of justice are radical, to say the least, and it ends up putting him at odds with the new Dark Knight. This ends up being a classic battle of student vs teacher, with Wayne eventually outsmarting Al Ghul at the end.
4. John Constantine (Constantine)
"Gods a kid with an ant farm, lady. He's not planning anything."
My new aesthetic is John Constantine giving Satan the middle finger as he's ascending into heaven. I'm familiar of the character in the comics but I think I only know about the current magic-based one instead of the religious one they tried to portray in the movies. His goal is simple: get ins God's good graces so he doesn't get sent to hell. He doesn't accomplish this by defeating demons like he does throughout the whole movie, or by even stopping the birth of Satan's son, but by giving up his chance at life to spare one girl from a tortuous eternity in hell. He still doesn't end up in Heaven, but now he has a clean slate to live life right.
3. Ben Grimm/The Thing (Fantastic Four)
"It's clobberin' time!"
Ben definitely got the short end of the stick when it came to abilities. Sure he now has super strength but his new rock appearance has people, including his now EX-fiance, running away screaming. What's worse is that, unlike the others, Ben can't even turn it off or on, he's just stuck that way. So I totally get the depressed state he's in when he thinks Richard isn't trying to help him and appreciate so much that despite all that he's still loyal and quickly takes on the Thing again to help his friends go up against Doctor Doom and put a stop to him. In the end he does find happiness with Alicia and his witty banter with Johnny was one of the best parts of the film.
2. Miho (Sin City)
*Silently kills everyone*
Miho is the best damn thing about this entire movie. Each freaking story is about a man saving a helpless girl in some way, shape, or form and Miho just defies all that nonsense. She's a prostitute by day, assassin by night and she literally always gets shit done. She kills a car full of assholes all by herself and saves Dwight's ass several times during the chapter. She can handle several weapons including samurai swords, ninja stars, and a bow and arrow. I'm positive she could go toe to toe with every other character in this film and still come out on top, YES I'm even including Marv because his slow ass wouldn't even see her coming.
1. Bruce Wayne/Batman (Batman Begins)
"Bats frighten me. It's time my enemies shared my dread."
This is the first time we really get an in depth look at how Bruce Wayne becomes the Batman, Gotham's protector. The loss of his parents give him the anger, but its the teachings of Ra's Al Ghul as well as the advice from those close to him that give him the tools to truly serve justice in a city that knows no meaning of the word. It's a hard task getting the police on his side as he tries to rid the city of its most powerful criminals like Falcone and Scarecrow. There's even a personal struggle of keeping the bat separate from the man, as his romance with Rachel won't go any further unless he gives up the costume. Odds are he won't be giving it up soon after he investigates this new enemy that we all know very well. This film was a great birth to one of the most iconic super heroes in comics and one that finally gets DC rolling on it's feet.

Shit I Hate #1: Killing Villains
I love movies. I love superhero movies in particular. These statements should be no surprise to anyone. But like everything I love, these things have a lot of elements that just grind my gears, so I’m making an infrequent series for me to detail my issues in depth. And what better issue to start with than one of my biggest pet peeves with the superhero genre: killing the villain.
Now, comic books have always had wonderful rogues galleries full of insane and creative foes for the heroes to fight; sure, Spider-Man is interesting on his own, but he’s even better when you set him up against someone like Green Goblin, Mysterio, Venom, or Kraven the Hunter. Heroes are only as cool as the villains they fight, basically. And comic book movies have always done a great job of bringing villains to the screen, be they obscure or beloved… the problem is, by film’s end, these villains are typically dead.
Now, this pisses me off for a great many reasons, the chief among them that killing off the rogues gallery tends to spit in the face of the comics; sure, people like Norman Osborn have died before, so him dying is perfectly fine, but when you kill characters like Doctor Octopus, Ronan the Accuser, and the fucking Joker of all people, there’s a big problem. This almost always leads to cases where villains who could have been interesting recurring foes get totally shafted as a best-case scenario (which is the case with characters like Ronan, Joker, Penguin in Batman Returns, Ultron, and so on), or worst case a villain who was boring or poorly developed is not allowed to improve since they are now dad, with Malekith being the worst offender in this regard.
Now, to show you how widespread this issue is, I’m going back to the big kickstarter of this trend, Tim Burton’s Batman, and showing all the major superhero films that did this between then and today. Obviously I’m only going to focus on films that kill a major rogue of one of the main hero.
Batman: Jack Nicholson’s Joker is killed off
Dick Tracy: Almost every antagonistic force in the film is dead by the end.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder dies at the end. I believe this keeps in line with the original comics, but at this point in the franchise Shredder was an established archenemy; it’s a very weird case.
Batman Returns: Penguin and Catwoman are both dead at film’s end, though Catwoman is ambiguous… though she may as well have been dead for all the later appearances she made.
Mask of the Phantasm: One of the few animated films that sort of fall into this, Joker’s fate is rather ambiguous. While he still shows up in the series, this movie almost seems like it’s in its own canon. Again, very weird case.
Batman Forever: Two-Face falls to his death, though Riddler lives; he’s totally insane at this point but it’s still something.
Batman & Robin: As more evidence that this isn’t a terrible movie, none of the major villains die; Ivy and Freeze are both alive and locked up by film’s end, as Batman would do in the comics. Hell, Clooney’s Batman is the only Batman that has not in any way been responsible for the death of one of his foes in some way.
Return of the Joker: Batman’s biggest foe comes back only to be completely erased forever. He dies twice over the course of this film.
X-Men: Magneto is one of the biggest names to avoid this, as he has consistently survived every movie he’s in. Toad and Sabretooth are not quite so lucky here.
Spider-Man: Green Goblin dies, though at least this is in line with the comics and he does impact the whole trilogy. Still counts though, as he was a major antagonist for a long while before his first ‘death.’
Daredevil: This one actually has both Kingpin and Bullseye live; in fact, it is one of the heroes, Elektra, who dies.
X2: X-Men United: Stryker does die in this, as does Lady Deathstrike.
Hellboy: Rasputin dies.
The Punisher: I really shouldn’t have to even list this, because with a guy like Punisher, no villain is coming out alive. This goes for War Zone later on down the line.
Spider-Man 2: Doc Ock is dead by film’s end. At least he didn’t posses Peter’s body.
Batman Begins: While Scarecrow is a notable aversion as he cameos in the following two films, the one DC villain best known for being immortal, Ra’s al-Ghul, dies at the end.
Superman Returns: Proving yet again that this film, while flawed, has the heart and spirit of
Superman right, Lex does not die in this film.
Fantastic Four: Doctor Doom doesn’t die, surprisingly.
X-Men: The Last Stand: Phoenix gets snikt’d by the end. Magneto, however, gets away.
Spider-Man 3: 2 out of 3 villains die, with only Sandman surviving; Venom and Harry Osborn are both dead at film’s end.
Ghost Rider: Blackheart dies, and I’m pretty sure a powerful demon like that doesn’t just die in the comics.
The Dark Knight: In a depressing twist, Joker lives, but Heath Ledger did not. Two-Face plays this straight yet again, dying with very little time to shine.
Iron Man: Interestingly, Iron Monger was originally going to be hinted to have lived. Perhaps he did, but right now everything points to dead.
The Incredible Hulk: Depressingly, every villain lives, but due to issues with distribution rights for Hulk, none of their plotlines have been followed up, meaning Abomination and Leader are in cinematic limbo.
The Spirit: The Octopus dies, which is the least of this film’s problems.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine: Deadpool dies, which is bad enough.
Iron Man 2: Whiplash is dead, but Justin Hammer is in jail. Yay. The lame villain lives.
Captain America: The First Avenger: Red Skull is maybe dead… though it’s not only ambiguous, but highly probable he’s still out there. For now, he’s presumed dead.
Thor: Loki is another notable aversion; he still hasn’t died after appearing in three major films.
X-Men: First Class: Not only does Sebastian Shaw die, but every single villain dies offscreen between this film and the next, which includes Emma Frost and Azazel.
The Amazing Spider-Man: The only thing this movie does right is letting the villain live.
The Avengers: Loki lives, as stated above.
The Dark Knight Rises: Bane and Talia are both dead by the end of the movie.
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance: Blackout dies.
Iron Man 3: The Fake Mandarin dies.
Man of Steel: As is well known by now, Superman snaps Zod’s neck, and Zod’s pals don’t fare any better.
Thor: The Dark World: Malekith dies, wasting any potential he may have had.
The Wolverine: Viper and the Silver Samurai both die.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2: In this not-so-amazing sequel, Electro maybe dies. Goblin and Rhino live, however.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier: Arnim Zola may or may not be gone for good; it’s pretty likely he’s still out there, but again, gotta presume him dead. Pierce is definitely dead.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Ronan the Accuser dies.
X-Men: Days of Future Past: Trask doesn’t die, yet another reason this movie is amazing.
Ant-Man: Yellowjacket dies at the end.
Shitastic Fuck: In this turd, Gimp Doom dies.
Avengers: Age of Ultron: Ultron is killed in an ambiguous fashion. Klaw, however, is ok, if down by a hand. Strucker on the other hand… dead. And so is Quicksilver.
Deadpool: Ajax is dead.
Doctor Strange: Kaecilius is probably dead.
Batman v Superman: Luthor is sadly not dead, but Doomsday and KGBeast a re.
Suicide Squad: Enchantress gets killed in the end.
Captain America: Civil War: Zemo is thankfully alive at the end.
X-Men: Apocalypse: Apocalypse is blown apart in the end.
A LOT of these villains are dead, or if not, they never amount to anything ever again. It pisses me off that studios refuse to continuously utilize beloved foes, especially when it ends up going against a heroes code by letting the villain die or killing them themselves. It’s a trend I really hope dies off soon (ha ha).

So tynion’s detective comics?
Finally completed a reread, so now I can say with confidence that while it’s inescapably flawed - the art frequently gets shaky in the final third, a major Ra’s Al Ghul subplot is completely dropped, and it ultimately makes the argument for Batwoman’s independence from Batman’s narrative weight by temporarily subsuming her to it via changes to the most basic elements of her status quo in ways that can’t be entirely undone - it’s probably the strongest testament to the Bat-Family as a narrative concept. So much of 2010s Batman has been about him as a force of inspiration to Gotham, but Tynion’s work here is entirely about seeing what that means on a person-by-person basis, how they interpret those methods and ideals in light of their own natures and goals and the degree to which they can live up to or make them their own. Especially given it tackles those questions by way of sci-fi superhero action wrapped around a core of characters bluntly mulling over their own symbolic weight, it reads like not only a direct sequel to Snyder/Capullo Batman, but a more coherent and deliberate articulation of many of the same themes, even if Batman didn’t ride a dirt bike in this one.
