Granada Holmes season 1 thoughts
I (finally) started watching this with my grandma and my roommate, who decided to join us. Unfortunately grandma wasn't impressed (pacing) so she dropped it after ep 4. But me and my roommate are enjoying it! So now we're watching it together, 1 ep/day.
Anyway here are my very unfiltered thoughts. Straight from the notes app
--
1- SCAN (30 iul)
Yessss. I liked it. A lot. Loved the disguises, i didn't even recognise him in the first disguise.
..why did they change it to "Irena" tho?? At least that's how they pronounced it. Weird.
At least they didn't butcher her personality
2. DANC (31 iul)
I liked this but it seemed slower. And after they get the bad news i feel like it should've been a bit.. worse? At least make the wounds more horrible. And why is Elsie still in the house? They had time to get her to a hospital.
3. NAVA (1 aug)
I hadn't read this one so i didn't know what to expect. I liked it. We made a lot of fun of Percy. I thought at one point that he had hidden them and was playing it up but no, he really was that dramatic.
Poor Holmes hurt his hand :(
Also very funny, i actually hurt my hand like 10 minutes after the episode ended.
Like during the episode I was all "awww do you want one of my pink peppa pig bandaids :(" and guess what. Guess fucking what.
4. SOLI (2 aug)
Well well well
I enjoyed this
I especially enjoyed Holmes beating up that creep
I have not read this story either but i listened to the Sherlock and Co episode. So i kinda knew the basics but not too much, yk.
My roommate appreciated how polite Holmes was with miss Smith. And i was reminded of that one part in the books where Holmes said that he thought of one of his clients like his own daughter. (Don't know what story it's from tho, i only saw it in screenshots on here)
I think it had a good ratio of intense (the obvious) and funny (holmes being kinda mean to watson, the ending :) )
Also the whole wedding in the woods bit was insane. Who would really think that that's enforceable. Jeez.
5. CROO (4 aug)
I mean it was alright. The "david" thing was a bit weird? Especially because she muttered it in her sleep? Like i guess it's something like calling someone a karen but still. The fact that she still said "david" in her sleep was odd.
Also what... How could someone do that? Indirectly (try to) kill a person who trusts you bc you like their girlfriend. That's insane.
He had it coming. Too bad it took 30 years🤷
Also Holmes being mean to that guy in the beginning was hilarious.
Oh oh and Watson's deduction at the end? "Elementary, my dear Holmes" :)))) that was good. We cheered for him
6. SPEC (5 aug)
AAAHH YEAASSSS YESS FINALLY this is my favourite story from the books, it's one of the ones i read when i was around 10 and it was my favourite then and yeah. Love it.
But yeah loved to finally see it on screen. I imagined the snake bigger and spotty-er but yeah. Oh and i loved the interactions between Holmes and Watson. And between them and Miss Stoner. (I told my roommate if i see one more person describe him as cold and emotionless, I'm throwing hands)
I liked that Holmes kinda felt bad for bringing Watson along because it was so dangerous, only for Watson to immediately go anything for you Beyonce :))
And then in the room, his hand shaking? Quality content. Bc yeah. It's a wild animal, it's unpredictable. (Super stressed at the end when he picked it up?? In his hands?? Like yea the leash was there but bruh-)
Also poor Watson being woken up twice :)) (does Holmes know how to wake someone Watson up like a normal person? Unclear)
Also also- "my intimate friend"
Yes
7. BLUE (6 aug)
Right so i do know the original story but i read it a while ago. I still think it's nice that they let the guy go but i remembered him more sympathetic in the books. Idk. Also, did Holmes keep the stone? I thought it was a bit of an odd choice. And how were they able to free the plumber guy without the culprit or the stone? Ehh yeaah, odd.
Also is everyone forgetting that Holmes and Watson aren't the only ones who know that the carbuncle is with them??
Anyway
God he looked so different at the beginning of the episode, before he did his hair. Also my roommate made a comment about having cigarettes for breakfast and. Yeah, petition to have this guy eat a normal meal?? *Sigh*
Also why did we see Watson with a bunch of presents and then never saw any one of them opened? Chehov's Christmas presents. I wanted to see what he got for Holmes
(At least we have the Sherlock and co episode...)

Curious question, how many Sherlock Holmes adaptations have you watched? Also, if you watched several , which one is your favorite?
Well, setting aside the Great Mouse Detective because it's unfair to compare other adaptations to something I loved as a child and thus can only view with perfect adoration in spite of any actual truths.
I am a tumblr user of repute, so I've of course seen the BBC's Sherlock. I think that A Study in Pink is the best episode in the show because the editing and cinematography are outstanding and serve the story beautifully. The writing is mediocre but competently sets expectations for the quality of the rest of the show. Then the second episode is so shockingly racist. So overall, it's bad, but influential in fandom whether we want it to be or not. I enjoyed it at the time, but as a more... like. Informed adult? It's bad. Don't bother.
A Study in Emerald. Short story by Neil Gaiman. Barely constitutes an adaptation, but we deserve to be reminded of good writing after that last one. It's available for free on Mr Gaiman's website, here:
Apparently there's a graphic novel version of Emerald, but I've not read it. Unless the graphic novel is just the fake newspaper on the website? Wikipedia was somewhat unclear.
Downey Jr movies: I love them. Absolutely horrible adaptations, but fucking amazing films. More fun than you're expecting. Highly recommended.
Elementary: Probably the best modern adaptation. Captures the serial spirit and commitment to Solving Mysteries Realistically of the original. However, I cannot watch it. The lead actor's performance is basically perfect for 'what would the Holmes character be like today' but I cannot stand it for some reason. I haaaaate watching him, and that makes this one hard for me. I recommend it highly anyway.
I watched two of the Basil Rathbone films to the point of nausea as a kid, but over exposure to the Worst Kinds Of White People in high school discussions of his body of films left a bitter taste for me. Because these films were an adaptation for an audience MUCH closer to the audience of the original stories, there is a period and character authenticity that just cannot be matched by anything else. Honestly, if you only ever watch one adaptation, it should be one of these. I say that in spite of these movies attracting the worst people on earth. There's a reason the 'generic' image of Holmes looks that way, and it's Basil Rathbone.
I've only seen the Peter Cushing movie, not the show. But, he's very much the performance I imagine in my head when reading the stories these days. My favourite live action Holmes actor, and a really top tier Watson. Definitely worth the time. I'm told the show is, um. Not so good on the Watson front.
I didn't like The Private Life of Holmes. I thought it sucked. I have no redeeming statements for it. It's objectively better that the 2010 BBC show, but I have nostalgia for that one's fandom. I just hate this one. It's bad!! Watch anything else. Watch the Great Mouse Detective, it has the same plot but it doesn't suck.
Young Sherlock Holmes is also a bad movie, but it's a bad Pixar Kids Movie so it's still perfectly competent for what it wants to be. If you need something to give a Holmes loving kid under 12 has 'seen them all' give them this. It's forgettable, and thus kids never really see it anymore.
I haven't seen Enola Holmes yet, but I'll probably get around to it. So I guess that's a tentative recommendation there.
The BBC radio drama Adventures of Holmes and its sequel Further Adventures of Holmes is REALLY FUCKING GOOD. If you like podcasts or audio books or stage plays, you have GOT to try these. The first half is a complete adaptation of every Holmes story, and the second half is professional fanfic of identical quality. I've never tried the American version and don't intend to.
I liked the 3 VHS tapes of the Granada tv series that I watched as a little kid, but I honestly couldn't tell you if they're good. I haven't watched any of it since I turned 9. A lot of people like them to the point of thinking Jeremy Brett is THE Holmes actor, so they had to be doing something right.
Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century and Case Closed are both like... impossible for me to parse as Holmes adaptations. Wikipedia says they are but like........ okay. I've seen them both and they are their own entities to me lol. Case Closed in particular is bomb as hell, highly recommended. But like... in a retro anime way, not a Holmes way.
Miss Sherlock has been good so far. I haven't watched enough to have a strong opinion beyond, like. Gay shit. As a Known Fagotte, I gotta say. They sure did cast very attractive actresses and leave all the homoeroticism in place. This, reasonably IMO, distracts me from having anything valuable to say.
The Star Trek TNG episodes with Data and Moriarty are obviously personal favourites. If you can suspend your disbelief enough to accept the god like powers of the holodeck, I think it's a really good time.
And the only one I can remember that wasn't on the Wikipedia list of adaptations is Slylock Fox. These are riddle comics for very young kids, like, ages 3-7. They're to help early readers learn new vocabulary and practice critical thinking. They were my very, very first Holmes media.
I. Hated. Those. Goddamn. Comics. I wanted to kill them. Not the characters or the author, but the comics themselves as a concept. I NEVER solved ANY of the fucking riddles, and to this DAY I will NEVER FORGET that latex paint dyes water and oil paint doesn't.
Tumblr media
Probably good for kids who get bored in class a lot, but be ready for the rage.

“The Basics of Humanity” by @tisnotmydivison
On AO3 and Wattpad (more active)
Words: 4459
Rating: General Audiences
After the death of Charles Augustus Milverton, Holmes burns all of the remaining blackmail material...or almost all of it. He spends the rest of the night clutching the documents to his chest, and Watson resolves to discover what his dear friend is hiding.
Although this fic is a one-shot, it is packed with emotion and intrigue. Thanks to the masterful portrayal of a very nosy Dr. Watson (I may or may not have been talking to him through my screen at some point), this story reads much like an extra scene in the books. It’s certainly not hard to imagine Jeremy Brett moving like Holmes is described in this fic, and his dialogue is just as authentic. I love the inclusion of Milverton’s blackmail in uncovering Holmes’s past, and I found myself wishing for more than a one-shot while reading this, but the ending was so perfect that the author could go either way.
If you would like me to review/promote your Granada Holmes, Victorian or Canon fics, please email the links to [email protected]! Simply reply or message me if you would like to be added to a tag list for future reviews.

Watson’s Unspoken Choice in “The Sign of Four”
Um, so I just watched “The Sign of Four,” and if you know anyone who somehow isn’t convinced that Granada totally intended for a queer reading of their Sherlock Holmes, have them watch the last two minutes of this episode, when Mary Morstan leaves 221B. Seriously. TWO MINUTES, and they are so laden with meaning that I was stunned.
After the case is solved, Ms. Morstan is with them at 221B and she talks about how tired they both must be. Holmes says something to the affirmative while walking into another room, basically dismissing her. Ms. Morstan and Watson share some extended eye contact more than once, like they have been throughout the episode, and she leaves. Then Watson and Holmes have an incredibly loaded conversation about what Holmes gets out of a case where he gets no credit, and Watson goes to sit and watch from the window as Ms. Morstan gets in her carriage. I can’t get over it. I may write another entire meta on the double meaning in Holmes’ and Watson’s conversation about the case and the visual choices in the scene, cuz it’s all great, but I NEED to talk about the last few moments.
Tumblr media
Even ignoring the GIANT RAINBOW cutting through Watson’s face (@bug-catcher-in-viridian-forest has a great post documenting all the instances this happens in the show here), this moment is telling. The look on Watson’s face… I think I’d call it wistful? On the surface, he looks sad and there is more than a little longing there. You can tell from his behavior throughout the episode that he hasn’t felt this drawn to a woman in ages — possibly ever. And yet, he’s just sitting there, prepared to do absolutely nothing about it. Why? Because he’s already committed his heart to someone else.
This doesn’t seem like the behavior of a man who lives platonically with his friend/colleague and now has a crush on a client. Wouldn’t he try to have both, because his friend and his potential wife would fill separate roles? Other Watsons (including, to some dubious extent, ACD’s Watson) have tried.
Not this Watson. He knows he can’t have both, because Holmes isn’t just his friend and never has been. He is curious about Ms. Morstan, which I think he’s allowed, not just as a bisexual but as a romantic and an affectionate man. I imagine he’s wondered what it would be like to be married, to be able to love your partner out in the open. It doesn’t really matter in the end, however, because he knows what and whom he wants, no matter how difficult that life/person can be.
Tumblr media
And so he calls her attractive again, with a sense of finality this time. It’s mostly to himself, but it’s out loud, so he’s saying it to Holmes too. A lot of unspoken things seem to be understood between Holmes and Hardwicke’s Watson, so I like to think that Watson said it partially to let Holmes know that he had been musing, but it obviously changes nothing.
And Holmes’ sassy ass responds with:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How do I love these lines? Let me count the ways:
Holmes using the past tense for Ms. Morstan when Watson hadn’t.
Yet another iteration of “the fairer sex is your department, Watson.”
The fact that this can also be read as a jab at Watson, like, “I definitely hadn’t noticed that you’ve said that multiple times now.” (thanks for putting this idea in my head, bug-catcher!)
His words are pointed, but his voice is soft and serious. I don’t think Holmes is being particularly mean here; he’s just tired, and I daresay relieved that she’s gone. From the moment she arrived on Baker Street and Watson first gushed about her beauty, Holmes became tense and fidgety. He was almost uncharacteristically impatient with her while she was telling her story. It’s subtle, because they don’t draw any attention to it, but it really feels like Holmes was ever-so-slightly threatened by her presence.
Tumblr media
Now, though, he can finally relax. He flops himself into bed fully clothed, his door open, and falls asleep. He’s unguarded and completely at peace, because he knows Watson will be there when he wakes up.
I’m sure I’m not saying anything new, but I’ve seen people who don’t view this series through a queer lens say they didn’t understand why they chose to depart from the canon and have Mary leave.  Some even called the end depressing. I disagree, because it wasn’t just that she left; Watson let her go. Because he had already chosen, and he chose Holmes. And it’s one of the best damn things I’ve ever seen.

Would you abandon me here to my melancholy?”A case forces Holmes to reveal the truth to Watson and risks both their reputations and their liberty. Just how understanding is John Watson?
◎ Holidays with Holmes by KCS, 43k, General, humor, angst, friendship, lovely: A series of holiday-themed ficlets in the company of our favourite duo.
◉ The Case Of The Stolen Doctor by flawedamythyst, 47k words in one shot, POV Holmes and Watson: Moriarty kidnaps Watson, a journey of angst and feelings with a happy ending.
◉ A Study in Scarlet by tiger_in_the_flightdeck, 49k, Explicit, AU modern era: An indiscreet photograph ends up online, forcing Watson to postpone his pursuit of a medical degree. Turning to the life of a soldier, he takes a bullet through the shoulder and is sent home to London a lost and broken man. Friendless and facing homelessness, he is introduced to an eager young man in the chemical labs at Bart's Hospital. As a friendship begins to form between them, a murder investigation pulls Watson into Holmes' world. Between crime scenes, a killer with an eye on revenge, and frustrating police officers, their friendship grows into something neither of them had expected. g o o d s t u f f
