He hadn't wanted to stop cleaning at all. He'd been on a roll, and when Val was on a roll, not much could slow him down. When his rumbling stomach became too difficult to ignore, though, he'd finally caved and reluctantly set down the duster for a lunch break.

Val was surprised to see that it was after one by the time he got to the kitchen. No wonder he'd been so hungry; he hadn't eaten since early that morning. He held a hand to his belly as it let out another irritable growl and took to the fridge, wincing at the cold air as he fished out last night's leftovers. The idea of a hot bowl of soup made his mouth water. Humming softly to himself, he scooped out a good-sized serving and stuck it in the microwave.

Not wanting to get too settled in and lose his momentum, Val opted to eat standing up, leaning against the counter with the bowl in his hand. He hadn't realized how hungry he was until the first bite hit his stomach, and suddenly he was wolfing down his lunch like he had minutes to live, his empty stomach guiding his pace. He didn't slow down until the bowl was nearly empty. By that point, he realized, he was undeniably stuffed, his belly feeling taut and bloated after gulping down so much soup so quickly. There was only a little bit left, though, and he supposed he may as well finish it.

The last few bites went down more slowly, but it wasn't long before the bowl was empty. He sighed, resting a hand on his full belly as he took a moment to settle. He'd definitely overdone it a little; he felt like a stuffed turkey with his tummy bulging out snug against his pants. Still, there was cleaning yet to be done, with a dirty bowl now added to the to-do list. He hummed as he washed it, round tummy pressing against the counter as he scrubbed.

With the bowl out of the way, Val returned to the living room and went on dusting. He stood on his toes as he reached up for a high shelf, leaning in as he strained to dust off the books hiding atop it, and heard a clatter below him. Looking down, he realized he'd bumped a picture off the shelf with his protruding belly. Fortunately, it had landed on the soft rug and didn't appear to be damaged. Sighing, he leaned down to pick it up. He was stopped, though, when he found that he was too bloated to lean over all the way. He stood upright, hand on his belly. Then, cautiously and awkwardly, he knelt down on the floor.

"Having a little trouble?" Val looked up, startled, to see Connie on the stairs, leaning against the railing with an amused look on her face.

"It got away from me," he said, smiling sheepishly. Connie laughed.

"They do move pretty quick," she chuckled. Val pulled himself upright and set the picture back in its place. Connie approached him and draped an arm over his shoulders.

"I think you've got this place looking pretty sharp," she said, giving his tummy a fond pat. "Why don't you call it a day before you knock anything else over?"

"Ha, ha," he said, unable to hold back a smile. He slipped his arms around her waist and hugged her warmly, planting a gentle kiss on her jaw before letting his chin come to rest on her shoulder. Connie smiled and patted his back.

"Alright, come on, Romeo. There's better places to hang around than the bookshelf."

"Oh? And where did you have in mind?"

"Hm, if you're still in a cleaning mood, how about the bathtub?" He looked up, and she gave him a sly smile.

"Oh, I could be persuaded," he grinned. "Maybe we can go change the sheets afterwards, how about that?"

"It's a date."

a writing question! i have ADORED both of your series both for alexia and for lessi. I feel like I enjoyed them so much because there was such elaborate backstory to the plot and depth to the characters stories and personalities especially “me”. But when you write, do you associate yourself with the character? I find most times when I read I really don’t picture it as myself because obviously I haven’t been through any of this and fanfiction is exactly that, fiction. So I’m curious how the writing process works for you!

Yeah look I definitely try to avoid nowadays saying “y/n” in my more current writing because I find when I read it both in my fics and others I quite literally say “your name” in my head and not my own lmao. But when im writing I really don’t picture myself in the story? I know it’s a x reader but as the writer I find it’s easiest to just pretend im writing two characters even though obviously one of them is a real person.

I think that’s where everyone sometimes finds fanfics either are or aren’t for them when they’re based on actual human beings and not just characters from some form of pop culture or media, because at the end of the day reading and writing for real life people can feel weird and that’s okay for it to not be for you!

I just try not to overthink it too much because obviously though it’s enjoyable to write I absolutely am not delusional enough to think I would ever ever have a chance with any of these women and sometimes that’s why I don’t do certain requests or write about certain events because they feel a little too much like someone is really trying to paint themselves into someone’s life if that even makes sense.

But I’d say overall no not really I don’t ever picture my writing as myself! I think that’s part of what I enjoy about it so much is creating these different “reader” characters and bringing them to life with their own stories and lives.

look some days i give myself the ick and im like wtf am i doing? and for seconds I contemplate just erasing my work and peacing out, and maybe one day i will! but for now i try not to overthink or take it all that seriously, just a football lovin gal trying to find an escape from the heartache and ups and downs of being a gooner 😔✊🏼

My BTS Experience, Pt. 2

2-part series

The final straw that overcame my BTS reluctance was the category that most interests me in movies, books, TV shows, or life - relationships. My sister had mentioned the members were exceptionally close, but I hadn’t really seen much up to that point that struck me in any particular way. 

Up to this time, my sister and I had been watching BTS performances for a good while whenever we visited. One day she played the song Yet To Come, and I told her that it sounded like a good-bye song. I asked if they were taking a break or stopping their act any time soon. She didn’t think so and was rather adamant about denying the possibility. Soon after she pulled up the Festa 2022 dinner that had just occurred. (Yes, that one.😔) I had never seen a Festa event, so I watched with curiosity. My sister had to leave part way through, but I was very intrigued and invested in what I had seen up to that point. Not only did it seem I was right about the break, but the emotions and interactions displayed during the dinner were genuine and visceral. This dinner inspired me, for the first time, to pull up BTS content on my own, where I watched, then rewatched, the Festa dinner.  I then went down the infamous BTS rabbit hole.

In the rabbit hole, I discovered more about each of the 7 very interesting and talented young men.  They each bring unique personalities and skills to the group, both which work together to create great performances and music. In addition to being known for their successful musical products, another of the group’s greatest attractions is the relationships they have with one another. Each pairing displays different dynamics based on their varying characteristics, but as a whole, the synergy and camaraderie observed is heartwarming and inviting. They’ve been through a lot together. They have identified strengths and weaknesses over time and determined how to best operate as a team.  They created relationships that they describe as more than friends, but as family. We got to watch much of the development occur in real time by way of the amount of footage but also by the types of programs they chose to create (such as In The Soop, Bon Voyage, Run BTS, etc.)

Because of the quarantine, the overall pandemic, and my specific circumstances, I had time to catch up on a lot of BTS’s history and achievements in quick fashion. I became more and more impressed with their journey and their accomplishments. I also got to know each member better and became more aware of the relationships within the group. Although I haven’t been a fan for long, it sometimes seems like I have done more research and connecting of information than some people who have been in the fandom longer - based on many anon comments I read. With that said, I realize I do not know everything and still have a lot to learn. I also know that some thoughts I have now may change as I learn more information.

One reason I feel in tune with BTS’s journey is I tend to look at original footage and Lives as well as read articles and interviews in which the guys participated. I try to get more of my information from what BTS says and does rather than from 2nd hand sources (although I still have to rely on translations). Another reason I feel very entrenched is that I went back to the start of their career and investigated their journey to understand the context of the information I was seeing. I’m still researching and viewing new (to me) older content to this day. The hiatus for their military service has provided me more time to catch up before this journey continues forward after the guys return.  

Probably the greatest reason I feel like I have been around longer than I have is because Big Hits documented and showed so much of their thoughts and experiences. I don’t recall ever seeing a group talk to and engage with fans, or reveal so much information as it was happening as this group has. BTS exposed their excitement, happiness, sadness, struggles, successes, celebrations, and frustrations to the public. Anyone who cares to know and understand them can explore the journey at any time, straight from their own words and experiences. In my shortish time I have read their book, watched several documentaries, watched & read interviews, watched Lives, performances, concerts, etc. etc. etc. (Their journey has been such a rollercoaster ride that sometimes I’m glad I wasn’t there to survive through those turbulent, earlier years. However, it definitely still seems a bit hectic to me now.)

Final thoughts:   I am a Jimin bias, OT7 Lover, and JiKook observer. (OT7 = One True 7, 7=1; JiKook = Jimin and Jung Kook pairing) Everything my sister told me about BTS turned out to be true. One thing I learned by watching more non-performance BTS content is that the guys sincerely care about each other and are naturally very affectionate toward each other. They sometimes do mild ‘skinship’ for the fun of performances but mostly they are close anyway. Jimin has remarked, in essence, that he doesn’t like being fake and his interactions with others are genuine, and basically he would do the same affectionate actions with or without the cameras being there. I believe that is mostly true with BTS as a whole. They interact or don’t interact affectionately of their own moods or wills.  Due to the fact that BTS was originally ostracized from the KPop community, BTS ended up breaking away from many of the cringy, expected behaviors that other groups did & still do. I am so happy about that because some of the early stuff is hard to watch from before the change was made. 

Since I have been investigating BTS, I have seen many people say that when they first got into the fandom they were flooded with TaeKook material due to algorithms. (TaeKook = Taehyung and Jung Kook pairing) Somehow - perhaps because I came in from solely the music direction first - I missed that experience. My sister never mentioned specific friendships or pairings. She only said they were all very close, which is genuinely true. I wasn’t looking for anything to show itself. It didn’t even cross my mind to think about it.

As I began watching original footage that was not performances, Jimin and Jung Kook’s interactions stood out to me. By the time I saw TaeKook material, I already knew what was and what was not accurate compared to what I had seen or did not see in the original material. There was nothing that convinced me Taehyung and Jung Kook were anything other than close BTS members. I’m still stunned about how some undeniable events have been discarded with ridiculous explanations or about the efforts some go through to lie about what actually occurred. Even if we (me & anyone else) don’t reach the same conclusions, we should at least be able to agree on what we actually see within a whole event, without adding or erasing pieces and parts.  Step one.

In regard to the whole group, there have been questionable interactions I recall about almost every pair in BTS, sometimes due to cultural differences, sometimes due to playfulness or whatever.  However, Jimin and Jung Kook were always different, very different, so I began observing them more closely and continue to do so to this day. Joint military enlistment? Who’d have thought? They still fascinate me. 

I don’t declare to know for sure the extent of any BTS relationship, and I try not to define them until I hear it directly from the guys themselves. Based on what they have said and what I have seen, I do have my own thoughts and opinions about what I think is happening. We should remember that this is still the entertainment business, but it is also their real lives, and we only know as much as we can know and see as much as they allow us to see, but I’m certainly intrigued. Could my opinions be wrong? Absolutely. And I’d be okay with that - although I would really hope for some direct information to explain how I could have so badly misunderstood what I’ve observed.

By the way, my sister does not subscribe to any TaeKook or JiKook theories or theories about any other pairing at all. To her, it is impossible for there to be any conclusion other than the one she’s reached. She excitedly talks about how she can’t wait to see them find nice girls and settle down. They are all very close friends and brothers. She doesn’t talk negatively about any of the guys at all. Despite the fact that she is a Jung Kook bias and denies any specific JiKook bond, she loves Jimin and compliments his talent & celebrates his achievements as she does with all of the guys. She just refuses to acknowledge or discuss any interaction JM & JK have together that presents any intimacy that can be seen in footage, platonic or not. Before we got to our more peaceful place, we had frustrating conversations. To prevent further angry conflict, we ended up agreeing to disagree and let it go as a topic we could discuss together. However, we can still have enjoyable conversations about BTS as a whole, as individual artists, and about their music.

On the other side of my BTS world, I have another sister who is V-biased [We’re all maknae-biased.😊] and is a mild TaeKooker (no hating or posting). She is a person who likes to get much of her information from snips and clips, so she tends to believe some of the distorted or misleading things shown from that side. When I’d tried to show her the fuller context of some events from original content, she declined to hear or watch any of it, falling back on some commonly-heard excuses.  Still, she and I can also have pleasant conversations about the group in the same way. We also agreed to disagree and to leave that conversation off the table.  However, she has recently said she now sees that JK & JM are very close. Progress? 🤔  Step one at least.

The lack of ability to have these conversations with my sisters explains a big reason for how I ended up finding Tumblr.

So finally, the BTS fandom … Yes, that has been a surprise.  For the group who drew me in with their positive, inclusive message and encouraging, thoughtful lyrics, the fandom is somewhat disappointing. At least a loud, vicious part of it is. I don’t think it is the whole fandom, of course, and I don’t think it’s BTS’s fault. Their whole experience has been extreme, exhausting, new, and fast. They had little time to rest and figure out what was going on in their own careers and lives and even less time to manage the behavior and psyches of a quickly growing fandom.

I do wish BTS did, or would now, address some of the issues within the fandom, but they may need or have needed time to figure out what and how to do that. Hopefully, the fandom will self-correct, and free them from having to wield a corrective sword, but that seems unlikely.  It would be a shame if their tireless efforts were destroyed by the very fandom that they worked so hard to gather and connect with. I apologize because I can’t remember who said this, but I remember reading a commenter who said something like, “Let’s hope that BTS is not destroyed by Hybe and the government from the outside or by the fandom from the inside.”  For shame.  

Anyway, that’s my story. I enjoy reading people’s introduction and bias selection stories, so I figured I’d share my own.  I still have much to learn and my present thoughts are based on my knowledge and understanding up to this point. I still have pockets of content to view in completion, which I hope to get to during this year, like more In The Soop and Bon Voyage type things. My views are subject to change as I learn more information. I am just as intrigued, if not more, as I was after viewing that Festa 2022 dinner. I feel there are more interesting events and stories to come for these 7 fascinating men.  (Oh, and by the way, my sister was right, I now know that Jimin is, in fact, a giggle box. And I love it.🤭)

AUs i’m not sure that i’ll ever write, so i’ll make a post with headcanons part 2: warehouse AU!!

aka AU where y/n is fresh out of college and lands a job as an area manager at a local warehouse, only to be a total dumbass and end up dating a homra boy aka her employee. featuring S4 as the leadership team that is underpaid, overworked, and 100% done with everything

note: this is actually based on real life lol, so some things are oddly specific. also, i wasn’t able to include the hmr trio and anna in this one 😔

just to be clear, warehouse associate is just another title for a warehouse worker, while an area manager is someone they would report to for their shift and assignments. an area manager cannot be having any type of relationship with their associates out of the workplace, as this can be seen as a conflict of interest and cause perception of bias amongst the other associates. this still applies even if the associate doesn’t directly report to them in the warehouse. so in short, managers dating warehouse associates are a huge no-no and can lead to both parties being fired. riskier for the manager since the job markets tough and it will be hard to find another well paying job, especially if the reason for termination was due to inappropriate workplace relationships.

s4 abc boys + fushimi are the area managers along with y/n, seri is the operations manager, while munakata is the station manager who doesn’t appear unless shit really goes down

homra abc boys + yata & kamamoto are warehouse associates

hmr guys are the troublemaking associates that are the bane of s4’s existence. always coming in late smelling like cigarettes or weed, missing from their assigned locations for hours, and always arguing with the managers because they refuse to follow the rules. there is a lot of back and forth between the s4 managers and the hmr guys (obviously), and things calm down once seri gets involved

the boys are either lowkey afraid of her or just don’t believe in disrespecting women. but that doesnt stop one dumbass (either bandou or chitose) making an offhand and inappropriate comment about her. andy and hidaka once got into an argument with chitose and bandou bc they were lounging around in the breakroom instead of working. the two managers were trying to get the boys to get back to work, only for the guys to be resistant, which leads to a verbal back and forth that required seri to come over. it was during that argument where bandou blurts out that seri would be a lot cooler if she got laid more often….only for the entire breakroom to suddenly get quiet and colder than before. bandou learns that day to never make that statement ever again. and he never really got the confidence to look at seri in the eyes after that event

majority of the management team begrudgingly admits that dewa is someone they can see growing within the company, since he has strong potential. he’s less obnoxious, actually understands the business, and when he occasionally puts in effort, he pulls the highest stowing and induct metrics for the shift. his downfall is the friend group he surrounds himself with, and the fact that he doesn’t put in a lot of effort for the most part. one time, dewa actually found himself on the ‘employee of the month’ board, which got the other guys teasing him and telling him to treat them to dinner to celebrate. dewa is just confused cause he doesnt even remember taking that picture (he was high from a smoke session with chitose and kamamoto in the parking lot, when a disgruntled fushimi yanks him as soon as he enters the building and takes a picture of him for the board)

of course fushimi has told a lot of associates, including the hmr boys, that theyre a bunch of idiotic lowlives who have nothing to look forward to. of course a behavioral investigation has been initiated against fushimi, who didnt hesitate in confirming the allegations raised against him. of course munakata was able to pull some strings so that fushimi got away with a write up instead of getting fired, since he is an asset to the team. as punishment, fushimi was tasked of delivering positive feedbacks to the associates, in order to earn their trust. kamamoto and bandou were alarmed and slightly afraid for their lives when fushimi approached them with a compliment on their stow rates and how he appreciates the efforts theyve been putting in. yata, chitose, and shouhei take the opportunity to piss him off even more. yata, being the little gremlin that he is, would have a shit eating smirk on his face when he says, “what was that, saru? cant hear ya when youre mumbling and the musics all loud.” dewa and eric probably get into it with fushimi cause sassy men clash with other sassy men

in this AU, y/n’s personality is really dependent on the homra guy she gets with. so if she gets with chitose, her personality would be completely different from if she were to get with dewa

but regardless of her personality, y/n is a complete dumbass bc she risks her job (and possibly have to pay back a 10k sign on bonus for getting fired before she makes a year with the company) by getting with a homra boy, who happens to be an associate working at the same warehouse as her.

as mentioned before, y/n is a college hire new to the team. she joins around the time yayoi yoshino resigns, which leaves her to be the only female in the team, along with seri. a little upset about yoshino leaving the team, seri quickly takes y/n under her wing as a protege.

but unlike yoshino, y/n has a tough time adjusting to the job and some of the team members. y/n hates the job and is constantly wishing that another opportunity opens up for her.

akiyama, benzai, kamo are too strict for her, especially with kamo being a divorced father. fushimi and fuse are mean and ignore her, fuse being the nicer one. andy is too hyper for her to keep up with, and sometimes a little too blunt. goto is weird, no added commentary. hidaka started off nice, but then started getting creepy with boobs always being the main topic of a lot of his conversations. enomoto, despite being nerdy, is the only one y/n genuinely gets along with. he joined the team a little before her, so they spent a lot of time together during the onboarding process. it doesnt help that he’s clearly flustered by being friends with a pretty girl, so y/n uses it to her advantage by having him complete some of her work

on y/n’s first day, she is immediately noticed by a lot of the male associates, including the homra boys. its not that often they get a female manager joining the team, especially a very pretty female manager who seems to be more laidback than seri

bandou somehow finds her instagram page and shares it with the rest of the boys (luckily for them, her page was public). bandou and chitose shamelessly view her posts and stories, followed by shouhei and eric, who were a little hesitant at first. dewa, fujishima, kamamoto, and yata refuse to stoop to their level.

when y/n realizes that her recent ig story is being viewed by some warehouse associates, she immediately blocks them before making her page private

she is a little intimidated by the group at first, based on what she heard about them and from what she witnessed. once she was done with onboarding and training, she was especially nervous about having to work directly with them, since they seem to be mean to the other managers

the first few weeks in the job had her being tense and nervous while some of the guys would try to flirt with her. but she eventually opens up to them, when she realizes that theyre not as bad as the s4 managers described them to her (well duh, theyre not trying to get with the other managers). theyre nicer to her, listen to her instructions, and even help her out with the larger packages without her even asking. near the end of y/n’s shift, its common for her to be surrounded by some of the hmr boys at her desk while she works on her end of shift report. this pisses off some of the managers cause the boys are still on the clock, but y/n is letting them lounge around her

some of the boys start to vent to y/n, claiming how theyre always being “mistreated” and “harassed” by the other managers, that theyre probably “discriminated” for their tattoos, and that y/n is the only manager who treats them nicely and acknowledges their hard work. y/n being the dumbass that she is, starts to believe them and thinks that the managers are using their power against the boys (which is not completely wrong, but theyre using it for valid reasons okay)

she especially likes the group better when she realizes that there are other male employees who may not be rowdy, but are definitely more creepy towards her. the homra boys may or may not have beaten up those creepy guys outside of work once they heard y/n complain about feeling harassed by them

but out of the group, there is one who caught her attention. the one who tends to walk slower than the rest of the group so that he can walk and talk with her. the one who stands the closest to her at all times. the only one she accepted to share a car ride with, even though she previously rejected an offer to carpool with the entire group. and even though she resisted his advances at first, she eventually lets her guard down by letting him take her out on dates after work, where they grab a meal after a long day, before he finally drops her home. she finds herself to be a goner when she finally lets him kiss her in the privacy of his car. she secretly exchanges her number with him, and follows him on ig after unblocking him. there’s been multiple times where they both would sneak away during work to sneak in a quick makeout session in hidden areas with no cameras.

they both fail to be subtle at work, however. multiple managers slowly start to notice that one homra member always being wherever y/n is. he’s always assigned to her area, he’s always hovering near her when theyre away from the operations floor, and he’s suddenly sitting near the leadership desk where the managers are during lunch, instead of sitting with his friends. according to fuse, that guy is always hovering around y/n as if he wants everyone to know that she’s with him. hidaka follows y/n on ig, and notices that she posted a pic where she’s wearing an oversized jacket he swore he saw that homra guy wear a couple of times at work.

fuse even notices that the homra guy is even more hostile than usual to him after he scolded y/n for making a mistake at work

but shit gets crazy when the guy posts a picture of her on his ig page. he thinks he’s being smart by covering her face with an emoji, but he forgot that he has a lot of followers from work who would be able to recognize that manager, even with the emoji covering her face

you bet one of those followers showed the picture to hr because he was salty that he wasn’t the one who y/n got with

the picture soon started spreading amongst the management team. seri is stoic on the outside, but extremely disheartened. when fushimi first pulled her aside to tell her that she might wanna speak to y/n cause shes awfully close to that homra guy, she was in denial. when munakata would argue that y/n is one of the least performing managers and may need to be put in a performance improvement plan, seri defended y/n and was adamant that there was improvement, and that she just needed time. so to see that someone she put in a lot of faith on and took in as her protege violate a huge policy just like that?? she’s never trusting another person ever again.

akiyama, benzai, and kamo are disappointed, but figured that hr makes the call on what happens to y/n and the homra guy. fuse and fushimi think y/n is a dumbass and should get fired since she’s not that useful to the team anyway. andy and hidaka are betrayed, since it seems like y/n is sleeping with the enemy. goto straight out asks y/n if she’s fucking the whole group. while enomoto? he actually knew this whole time bc y/n confided in him. and was he going to snitch? hell no! sue him for not wanting to cut off the only pretty friend he has

poor enomoto tho. in general, he’s been an easy target for the hmr guys to bully since he’s visibly nervous when he confronts them on his own. but bc he’s always around y/n, he finds himself in the shitlist of y/n’s man. with ‘accidental’ shoves and hostile glares thrown his way, poor enomoto is scared and confused

during the investigation, y/n and the homra guy were both in denial, claiming that the girl in the picture could have been any other girl who had similar hair and nails to y/n. the guy states that he is dating someone else and that he doesn’t like how his privacy is being violated. y/n is the only manager who’s nice to him, but why would he put his job at risk by dating her? y/n states that she heard rumors about the guy liking her, but she would never date a coworker. they dont make it any easier when they both take the same day off after the investigation during that week.

unfortunately for the team (and fortunately for y/n and her man), the picture was not a substantial evidence due to the emoji covering her face, even if there are multiple coincidences and rumors about them. therefore, the most they can do is have y/n sign the relationship policy document, confirming that she understood the policy, and that she understood that she will be terminated if she is caught in a relationship with an associate

that doesn’t stop the two from dating though. although they keep some distance from each other in work, theyre still seeing each other outside of work and going on dates. the homra guy makes sure to unfollow everyone from work on ig, except for his boys bc they knew from the beginning and never snitched. y/n makes sure that he goes private on ig as well, and that he blocks the managers that she’s following. On the week of her bday, they both take the entire week off, which is noticed by the entire leadership team. but until they get a clear picture of the two together, they can’t do shit.

y/n once comes to work with a bandaid on her neck, which eventually falls off and reveals a fresh hickey. the managers are not impressed (“can’t you cover that shit up with makeup?” -andy)

goto once lurks around and finds that y/n has another page on ig thats filled with her posts at the gym. she doesnt have much followers, but he sees that she is following that homra guy, along with her main page. when he shares that info to the other guys, he’s immediately told to pull up the page and take screenshots. but when he pulled the account again, he noticed that she went private, so he couldnt take any screenshots.

will they ever get caught? maybe, theyre not as stealthy as they think are. but theyre both stupidly “in love” and not realizing the seriousness of their situation

how do you come up with your character backstories? they're all so detailed and well thought out and you always seem to have an abundance of fun and interesting trivia for all your characters as well. would you be willing to give tips to someone who has a hard time coming up with anything beyond like. the basics lol 😔👉👈

WAH THANK YOU FOR SENDING THIS 🥺 i always feel a little embarrassed talking abt my ocs because i tend to start and never stop lol, and theyre all very special to me so its a sort of vulnerable extension of myself in a way. even if im only sharing with them with the lovely ppl who live in my phone its always a little stressful, so i really appreciate that they left a good impression!!

as for tips, i just wanna say as a disclaimer that i am very chronically online. ive also had multiple periods of extended free time in which ive been able to really hyperfocus on certain media and the characters i want to create within them. ALSO, a lot of my ocs ive had in development for several years and theyve just evolved naturally. ashara, for example, i made when i was 19, and im 26 now lol. ik this is cliche to hear, but i rly do think its important to go at your own pace when developing characters and do whatever makes YOU happy, before looking to anybody elses ocs , because we all have different lifestyles and creative processes and whatnot ❤️

that being said, i can def share a few things that helped me! firstly, i always start developing characters based solely on vibes and sensory stimuli, so i'd highly recommend making a pinterest moodboard for them and/or a music playlist! pinterest esp, since its such a great way to start brainstorming and getting a visual idea of what you want your character to look like/embody/represent. its a great place for inspiration in general.

secondly, one of the most important steps in developing any character is motivation. what does your oc WANT? why? what would they do to get it? should they get it? would would happen if they got it vs if they didnt? do they ACTUALLY want it or just think they do? answer those questions and you've already got a pretty solid foundation to work with. another really useful piece of advice a friend gave me several years ago was this: "what is something your character believes in at the start of their journey, that they no longer believe by the end of it?" for example, my warden oc elspeth believes in traditional heroics and black-and-white morality. by the end of dao she does not. theres a LOT to explore between point A and point B.

lastly, when i make ocs its very important to me personally that they feel inextricably TIED to the media they belong to. this is completely optional ofc, bc lots of people enjoy characters they can drag and drop into different stories, which is fine! for me though, i like taking cues from the world around them. it makes them feel natural to the plot, the setting, the canon characters, etc, because it helps me pin down some of their more hyperspecific quirks. there are a few ways to go about this.

the easiest way imo is to look at any major Core Issues within whatever media you're working with. like real life, people have OPINIONS about ISSUES and POLITICS lol, and those opinions are usually influenced by their own lived experience or personal belief system. so if you can identify a few key figures, factions or events in your story, and give your character an Opinion or Reaction to those things, it can pretty naturally be evolved into a unique and interesting backstory. to use elspeth as an example again: "elspeth dislikes orlais". thats a political opinion about a faction. and then to expand on why? "because her family/country fought in the occupation and she loves her family/country". from there we learn she's nationalistic and places value of lineage. then you could say — "she enjoys history and geography because it allows her to better appreciate her country. she cares deeply about all ferelden peoples, and has studied techniques from avaar and chasind communities". and you can keep branching out and expanding from there. and once you've exhausted that thread, move on to a diff one! "elspeth is nervous around mages". why? "because her religion tells her to and shes never thought to question it." why? etc etc etc.

alternatively, i find it really helpful to find an overlining theme in the type of media im working with/creating. sometimes its easy (baldurs gate 3 has a confirmed theme of autonomy vs authority, da4 will have a confirmed theme of regret, etc) but if its not as clear cut or your designing your own original world, its fine and great to take your own creative interpretation of things and run with it. for example, origins for me is very reminiscent of loss of innocence and war. inquisition is, to me, about personhood and losing it to your own mythology. once you've got a theme it can really help help translate into a cohesive story you want to tell and a character you want as an outlet. and since the character will be thematiclly relevant, you might also find it easier for them to connect to the cast/setting/story etc.

sorry this is so long, but i hope you gained something out of all this word salad lmao. one more thing i want to mention — its also fine to NOT do any of this. sometimes i get overwhelmed feeling like i have to come up with a unique/multi-faceted character every time i go into characterization, and virtually 100% of the time its Never that deep. if you find yourself getting stressed or overwhelmed, remind yourself that its perfectly fine to dream up a simple and straightforward character who makes you happy, and let the rest come to you as your character goes forth into the story. sometimes simplicity is best because you arent held down by the restrictions you've placed on them yet.

Can I confess something else? I just feel like... This whole episode itself was just... kinda... super disappointingly underwhelming (and based on one of the comments I've seen from SillyBilly's reaction to the ep, I know I'm not the only one).

It's kinda conflicting, I mean- DGMW, I'm glad we were able to learn about Marcus' life prior to DC; that he had a family & a daughter.. BUT WHAT ABOUT NINA??? Sure, we know that she's this sentient girl puppet/doll with supernatural/demonic powers, but that's ALL we know! They never tell us *where* she really came from or *who* created her or that entire toyline of dolls to begin with. Did a witch curse them with sentience one day, or were they brought up from the pits of Hell itself to wreak havoc on unsuspecting buyers? Did the person/people selling them *know* what they were like, and if so, *why* would they do this?? What's their motive???

There are SO MANY loose ends this episode could've finally tied for us but they NEVER did!!! And I doubt they ever will at this point.. (We won't get much information just from seeing two dolls tied to a safe in an abandoned house and then watching them fight to the death, Jared.)

I remember, leading up it, SolarVolar kept mentioning a special surprise guest or smth that would be in the episode, and I was hyped because I thought they were giving us, like, a crossover or something with a guest character, or a big reference. Turns out he was just talking about the fact that he voiced Chet. 😅 And I mean, great for him, but... Idk. I just thought we would've gotten more. 😔

fully agree with you both on the couple and the episode. although, honestly, Anika and Molly were at least more interesting to me because they were obviously so dysfunctional. like, if they were just a perfectly cute goth x prep couple, i would've been like, "aww, that's nice" and then promptly forgotten about them. then again, is it better if i remember them because i was slightly annoyed by them? at the very least, ONC got me to not feel bad about Marcus kinda screwing them over in the end, which i assume was the point of making them not very rootable.

the episode itself was... really weird. so, you're telling me that the entire Real Girl doll line was haunted for reasons completely separate from the death of Marcus' daughter? why? what happened to make that doll line cursed? we didn't learn anything about it!

and then, Marcus goes to chase down this (apparently) haunted doll that his daughter never even had out of some sense of guilt. he just wanted to get one so that he could... leave it at her grave site, maybe? he never actually says that. it felt at times that the script was written where the writers knew that going on this quest would give Marcus a "new daughter," yet forgot that Marcus would have no idea that that would be the outcome when he went to seek the doll out.

speaking of "new daughter," that ending was... honestly really off-putting. i imagine that, like me, many other people believed that Nina (the doll) would be revealed as the spirit of Marcus' dead daughter. however, that... just didn't happen? which means that, instead, Marcus took this completely separate sentient being who he had met literal minutes before making this decision, said, "yeah, that's close enough," and decided to name it after his deceased daughter. and then he altered that completely separate sentient being's appearance to better match the specter of his past. that's super creepy.

i suppose i can sum up my thoughts on the staff stories real quick here. to me, there's a clear top and bottom half. the Kristal and Trevek episodes were both pretty good, containing some nice insight into Kristal and Derek's characters respectively. meanwhile, Marcus and Jensen's episodes were both pretty meh. at first, i thought Jensen's was my least favorite-- i'm not much of a dog person, and without that "aww" factor, the episode was a very cliche "guy and his dog" story. however, after writing out all that about the Marcus and Nina episode, i think that has to be the worst one. i at least appreciate the commitment to showing Jensen's sister die on screen, hilariously unexpected as it was.

that's not to say that other people can't rate the episodes differently, of course! those are just my takes on it :)

Starting with the first album for the event, it pains me to put Songs from a Blackbird last because I don’t think it’s her weakest album at all. Actually, if I was ranking this based on what I think is her best rather than my favorite, this album would actually be a lot higher. Maybe top three? Anyways, it’s last mostly because I realized much like Spark, I don’t really come back to this album a lot. I think it’s very cohesive, and several songs sound like it could’ve been from the 70’s. The highlights of that album are Driving and the extremely underrated You and I. I will say, my least favorite respect about this album are the lyrics. Driving is one of her best written songs as well as Never Leave Me, but I’m not a fan of the extremely vague lyrics that a lot of these songs have. In particular, On Fire is the most guilty of being nondescript, and that song had three songwriters in total. Honestly, the weakest lyrics she has ever put out on an album, and it’s my least favorite Marion song ever. (Sorry On Fire fans. 😔) But there IS a very reasonable explanation for this, and IIRC it’s because Marion wanted keep it more on the vague side because, in the past, she usually wrote her lyrics more openly and this time she wanted to keep some things to herself. So that’s why the lyrics were more nondescript. But imo, you can still be an interesting songwriter without needing it to be personal. And before I talk about this era, I wanted to give a little context before this album came out. Marion had came back to Norway around 2010 to be a judge on X Factor, and she was around 26-years-old. She had been grinding and working so hard throughout her 20’s, trying to make an intentional career, but it didn’t work out for her. So when she had gotten a call in LA to join the TV show, you can probably imagine how exhausted she was and just wanted to go home. And this call essentially changed her life for the better. People still had very nasty opinions about her, and she essentially work hard to rebuild her reputation, which she ultimately did on a show called Hver gang vi møtes. She got to talked about her side of the story, and people got to see the real her. Part 2: Marion has stated how much this show means to her, and I do believe this show influenced this album (aside from the fact that she grew listening to 70’s music because of her parents.) So this album is a start of a lot of things her. And I also wanted to make note that Marion had also made a huge transition in her sound. Before, she was known to making rock music, so when she switched, some of her fans didn’t like it, and some of her haters also took jabs at her. This was especially the case when she had released Found Someone and Colors Turned to Grey as singles before this album became a thing. But again, I think this change of sound was necessary for her career. I don’t know if she would still be in the industry if she didn’t adapt. Anyways, more that I could say, but I’ll end it here. Will released the next album in the ranking tomorrow.

Hmmm this is kind of broad so I’m not totally sure how to interpret it I guess I will go with like. If it was a tv show. What visual motifs or recurring shots would there be. I think if there were constantly shots of Rocio alone like in an empty space that would be kind of funny imagine watching a show and there’s an obvious meta narrative focus on how lonely you are I’d be so mad. That and shots of like her back while she’s reading something or working on something like she’s closed off to the world or whatever. Definitely a lot of contrast of darkness vs light though for sure like places with people in them being associated with yellow/orange light whereas empty places are associated with the dark. 

Also there would probably be many unnecessarily long shots focusing on nature and the environment around the characters bc that’s what I personally like to see

8.) what inspired your world building, if anything?

Honestly. Not much lol I feel like a lot of it is just me trying to make something that appeals to me personally just thinking of like aesthetics 

in the extended secret worldbuilding there are some aspects inspired by or influenced by real history. that being said I try not to avoid making that too direct or have it come up too often bc 1) it’s easy to make it extremely tasteless or at least inaccurate/shallow in its portrayal ofc 2) it is ultimately a fantasy world where I wanted to make shit up + have everything be original rather than have like. direct copies of real places + events. I think it’s like background concepts can be to some extent based on reality but specific events are all homebrewed yk

I guess you could say I was inspired by actively trying to go against like. Tolkien esque or popular YA fantasy tropes of the late 2010s early 2020s. Bc a lot of what made me want to make the story in the first place was being tired of and annoyed by the kind of tone that was prevalent in YA fantasy at the time 

I literally CAN’T think of much this is so sad. My worldbuilding is just too original you guys 😔

13.) how long have you been working on this project? what has changed from the outset?

A little over 3 years like since February 2020 :3. I love this question it feels very behind the scenes like Im talking in a documentary.  Mostly the structure of the story has become much more linear when the original was like arcs based if that makes sense? Like episodic even though the episodes were pretty large in scale + theoretical length. Ofc a lot of the characters’ personalities have as well. I think the main focus too like initially it was just for fun but when I first added like a vague general central theme it was a lot abt dissociation from your identity + the weight of living and things like that. Life is hard but it’s worth it <3 And now there’s more focus on the nuances of interpersonal connection and things like that. I do like the original theme though I wouldn’t want to drop that idea entirely even though I’d probably want to have it show up in a more nuanced or subtle way idk 

16.) imagine the entire story takes place but in the meantime the characters all also have tumblr. what kind of (terrible) tumblr posts would happen?

rocio would hate all forms of social media viscerally. if she absolutely has to use it then it’s several thousand word long rants that stay in the drafts for eternity 

cirillo probably the type to just use it as a diary 

angel runs an extremely popular yet controversial fan page for enstars or some shit (<I mean. in universe it would be about 1400s romance novels) but occasionally vagues abt his personal life and everything he says sounds extremely concerning. And then like once he ends up on the news everyone’s like omg… bone stealing witch tier drama 

gloria only posts thirst traps + posts that are like “will be in [x city] tomorrow if anyone wants to meet up 👅” with every location change

9/19 first day of no code!!!! Only did visdev today. I noticed I had a harder time problem-solving my art after binging programming - I never really believed the left-brain-right-brain shtick as more than a mental model, but maybe there's something to it. 

Either way, I did finally settle on a visual style I think is iconic enough - If there is time, I will return to the gray portrait one for special events, but I'm otherwise going with the limited palette one. I wish I had more time to iterate more, but I think I just have to proceed.  Art was very slow today. Drew from 9-11, 12-5(?) 10-11? so 8 hours???

Final - still need to tweak yellow and blues

9/10 good lord finding a way to detect when my instantiated scene ends is ROUGH. I in fact did not find a way. I instead made it so that the end of the instantiated scene code changes a global variable, and the base file is always checking for changes in the process function. IT WORKS THOUGH and character events are implemented.  I thiiink i worked from 9-11, and 12:30- 3:30. 5 and a halfg hours total.

Make out of life ending Display currencies STRETCH: find a way to dynamically adjust randomization of random events (again) STRETCH: Make a system to force certain events STRETCH: create stat screen + replay

By 4:30 i have done everything but the stat screen!!!!! ANd i pretty much refactored my entire event code!!!! Now it's still unwieldy, but in a different way - I think it's easier to understand but harder to find bugs now.  The character event and random events now use the same script, and events without choices no longer need empty array placeholders to match the ones with choices. This is handled by sporadic if statements that check a boolean i put at the top instead. 

The other systems were not too bad to add - somehow my base file is pretty simple and easy to modify - but we’ll see how long that lasts. Worked from 9-11, 12-4:30 (if sporadically)

From about 5-8:30 made the stat screen!!! Replayy button was 2 hours of frustration ❤️‍🔥 10 hours total.

Worked from 10:00 - 1? 2-6:30? 8-10. 9.5 hours.

Did more refactor than anticipated,,, all for that dang resart button. Its good now though. Clean as i can make it with my current skill and time gate.

Drew 8 character images, finally properly sized the default bg and midground.

Implemented 4 “final” character events and they work perfectly. 

Due to how clunky my system is, implementing the lines takes a fair bit of time.

9/16 sECOND DAY!!!! Did indeed start over - very little code was reused. Resources for dialogue are completely abandoned. 

Worked from 8:30-1PM, 2:30 - 6:30. 8:45-9:35. 10 HOURS. 

The code for everything up to the dialogue choices is very neat and easy to read. Everything that has to do with the dialogue choices is painful to read - but it does work, and is bug-free.

It now has:

Randomly picked events

Additional events can be added without changing the main code

An advance button to proceed through dialogue

Events with and without dialogue choices

When a dialogue choice is present, the advance button is hidden/locked

Dialogue choices can have different ends to the event.

Main image changes depending on the choice picked

There can be as many dialogue choices as i want

Currency changes depending on the event

To-do:

Score changes for dialogue choices

Lock dialogue choices/visibility until text is finished

Weighted chance of events system 

Maybe separate SE’s from CR’s

A new main file that instantiates SE or CE
