Hi I haven't written a fic for this fandom in over a year but I saw the first couple paragraphs in my drafts last night and went in a trance at 1am finishing it anyways here's a little snippet from The Early Days section of my They're Just People AU enjoy
-
Thomas glared at the small flock of seagulls a short distance away, fighting over the small scraps of food Edward threw in their direction. "You shouldn't feed them.”
His colleague merely shrugged. "A little won't do too much harm," he said, chucking another scrap towards the hungry birds.
"Nasty things," grumbled Thomas, shaking his head. "Lost many a decent meal to them back when I was on the streets.”
"Well you needn't have to worry about that now. You're plenty fed.”
A tut and an eye roll was Thomas' only response.
Come to think of it, the young’un had been in a particularly sour mood for the majority of the day. More so than usual. Reaching into his lunchbox, Edward pulled out half a sandwich then held it out to his companion. “Sarnie for your thoughts?”
Thomas wrinkled his nose. “Ain't tuna is it?”
“Chicken and sweetcorn.”
Satisfied Thomas plucked the sandwich from Edward’s grasp, wasting no time in scarfing it down while Edward waited patiently for his colleague to spill the beans. He didn't pressure Thomas, even after the young lad had finished eating and opted for fiddling with the cuffs of his sweater in silence. He knew Thomas would speak up in his own time. For whatever reason, ever since that fateful night the pair crossed paths at Barrow Central Thomas had chosen to put his full unwavering trust in Edward, although Edward wasn't exactly sure why. All he did was offer the lad a hot meal in exchange for getting him and his engine across the bridge.
“Reggie and Bart returned to the Main Land this morning.”
Speaking of.
Edward's brow raised in surprise. “Have they? Huh… that's the first I've heard of it.”
“And Alfie and Raymond are leaving this evening,” continued Thomas. “Isaac and Harry too.”
Humming, Edward grabbed the flask sitting next to his lunchbox. He unscrewed the cap and took a small sip of his tea. “Seems more and more are heading back by the day.” After another sip he gave a reassuring smile. “Worry not, I'm sure it'll be us soon.”
“And then what? What happens after we leave here?”
“Well… I suppose it's back to passenger trains and goods runs across the Furness line. Shame really. Not that I'm complaining, no. But Sodor’s been a breath of fresh air I suppose. Nice to feel useful after…” Edward trailed off, trying to shake off the memories of how his coworkers back on the Main Land often spoke down or belittled him. “Still, the Furness Railway is my home.”
The two lapsed into silence, though it wasn't comfortable, the air still felt as if something was left unsaid. Taking a quick peek at his pocket watch, Edward wasted no more time in packing up his lunchbox. “Right, come along you. Sir Topham Hatt wanted to see us before our goods train this afternoon.”
“Is’at right? What could the Fat Controller want to see us for?”
Edward tsked. “I do wish you wouldn't entertain the other's idea of such a demeaning nickname.”
Thomas waved him off. “Shove off will ya, it's not like we call him that to his face.”
“I dare wonder if that makes it even worse.” Shaking his head, Edward continued, “Regardless, we should make haste. Who knows, perhaps he'll tell us our loan period is up ‘an all. That this time tomorrow we'll be the ones crossing that bridge back to the Main Land!”
“Back to Furness Railway, you mean?” Thomas asked quietly, expression unreadable.
“Precisely.” Tilting his head to one side, Edward frowned. “Hadn't we just gone over that?”
Abruptly, Thomas stood, balling his fists at his sides. “But Edward- I don't work for Furness Railway, remember? You picked me up off the streets because you didn't have a fireman. What's going to happen to me once we go back? They'll kick me out the moment they realise I'm not one of them! I can't go back to living on the streets, Edward - I can't go - I don't want to go back there! I-”
Two warm hands gently clasped Thomas’ own that had found their way up to gripping his hair somewhere amidst his panic. “Thomas, I need you to breathe for me. Deep breaths now, in - and out. Good lad, and again.”
Thomas followed suit, taking a few shaky breaths. When had his breathing gotten out of control? When did he start crying for Christ's sake? His hands slowly lowered from his head, feeling Edward give them one last reassuring squeeze before pulling away. “...sorry,” he said pathetically.
“Don't be daft, you've got nothing to be sorry for,” Edward replied without a beat. His gaze softened. “I should apologise. I had no idea how distraught you had been feeling about all this. I just wished you had brought it up sooner rather than letting it build up like that.”
“I’m sorry,” Thomas said again. “It's just that, coming here - to Sodor - has been the best thing to ever happen to me, least from what I remember. I have a roof over me head, I don't have to worry about when my next meal will be, I have a job, and you- Edward you've been ever such a good friend to me.” He paused, batting a hand across his damp cheek. “I'm terrified to lose it all.”
Edward swallowed a lump in his throat at being called ‘friend’. He never had quite gotten along with his coworkers back home, so in a sense, Thomas was his first real friend since joining the railway. He placed a hand on Thomas’ shoulder. “I wouldn't be such a good friend if I allowed you to go back to living on the streets, would I?”
Confused, Thomas asked, “But where else would I go?”
Edward shrugged. “Well, while my flat isn’t exactly grand in size I'm sure there's some room to squeeze you in.”
Blue eyes widened. “What? You're saying I can come live with you?”
“I mean- only if you'd like to-”
“Of course!” Thomas cried, leaping over to squeeze the other in a hug. “Thank Edward, thank you! I won't cause no bother I swear!”
Edward grinned. “No bother? That doesn't sound quite like you,” he teased, giving the other lad a pat on the back.
Pulling away, Thomas matched him with a cheeky smile of his own. “Well- within reason, of course.”
“Of course. And I'm sure we can try and get you work on their railway, although the chances are it won't be as my fireman, there are still plenty of opportunities. Even if it's something as giving Old Coppernob’s engine a good polish.”
“As long as it's nothing to do with stinky fish I'm up for anything!”
Chuckling at his enthusiasm, Edward took another glance at his pocket watch and almost gawked at the time. “Right, come along you, we're running late! Don't want to keep the Fat - I mean - Sir Topham Hatt waiting.”
Renewed with energy and anticipation for the future the pair climbed aboard their engine together ready to tackle the rest of the day ahead, unbeknownst to them that the Fat Controller was about to drop the bombshell that Furness Railway had expressed that they now had zero interest in having Edward, nor his engine, return home to them.

ARRR! Talk Like Pirate Day is September 19!
Bringing Her Yards Aportland, Tackles to the Gooseneck of the Tiller, Sheer Off, Running His Guns, Setting Fire to the Powder, Raising Their Metal, Bringing Her on the Careen.
These are terms most of us do not hear very often, or are unfamiliar with, but to ship’s captains and crew during the Age of Sail, all of these were well understood.
Acts of piracy on the high seas had been common from the time people first took to the sea, but for most of us today, the word Pirate conjures up images of 18th-century buccaneers made popular in art, books, and movies. Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, Captain William Kidd, Stede Bonnet, Anne Bonny, “Calico Jack” Rackham, Bartholomew “Black Bart” Roberts, and Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy are just a few of the men and women who “Went on the Account,” that is, turned to piracy.
This book, The Lives and Bloody Exploits of the Most Noted Pirates, Their Trials and Executions, published by Ezra Strong in 1839, describes the lives and careers of many of these pirate captains in colorful detail.
Perhaps the following speech, included in this book, (pages 129 and 130) and attributed to pirate Captain “Black Sam” Bellamy, gives us an insight into the reason why so many seafaring men, during the Age of Sail, chose to became pirates. Captain Bellamy, commanding the Wydah Galley, captured and plundered a sloop commanded by a Captain Beer while cruising off Rhode Island in late February of 1717. Captain Bellamy to Captain Beer:
I am sorry they [Bellamy’s crew] won’t let you have your sloop again, for I scorn to do any one a mischief when it is not for my advantage; - the sloop, we must sink her, and she might be of use to you. Though you are a sneaking puppy, and so are all those who will submit to be governed by laws which rich men have made for their own security; for the cowardly whelps have not the courage otherwise to defend what they get by knavery; but-ye altogether:-them for a pack of crafty rascals, and you, who serve them, for a parcel of hen-hearted numskulls. They vilify us, the scoundrels do, when there is only this difference, they rob the poor under the cover of law, forsooth, and we plunder the rich under the protection of our own courage. Had you not better make one of us, than sneak after these villains of employment?
Captain Beer rejected throwing in with the pirates.

Rating Different Versions of Will Blake
Because Fever Swamp Brain is real
Official
OG Book: Not much to say, he was clearly just a dude. A guy alright. Twist is there just because we need a twist, but you can feel a good chunk of personality whenever Cassie antagonizes him.
8 R.L. Stines/10
Graphix: Great design since the art style is killer, and absolutely love the way it’s more obvious here that he’s actively interested in Grady for some reason. The gay undertones are slowly becoming apparent.
10/10
OG TV Show: Will’s actor has to take on both Will and Cassie’s roles in the story since Cassie got cut, but he really does bring Will to life as a character. He’s a more active threat, even if he canonically dies in this version. The eclipse scene though? * Chef’s kiss * absolutely gay as hell, if Will Blake was in Twilight (and the actors were all the same age) he would’ve bagged Bella AND Edward.
11/10
Movies: My personal headcanon is that the monsters in the Manuscripts are beta versions of the characters in the official books, and this is why almost none of them match their book versions in either personality and design. The design is absolutely killer, but it’s obviously not the twelve-year-old if his six pack and tattoo weren’t obvious enough. Even the branding makes it clear that this is “The Werewolf of Fever Swamp” as a character, rather than Will Blake.
If he was a character in the book I can totally see him as like, Will’s cooler older brother who’s also a Werewolf and maybe Will would have less trauma in my fic.
0/10 as a Will, but 10/10 as a Design.
Horrortown: Just like Bart.
IDK maybe the designers just saw the word “flat-top” and went buck wild, I would believe his character design belonged to CONAN before Will Blake (ToT). Personality wise, he’s straight ;^; also if he wants Marty to leave Courtney alone, he should just date him - boom, problem solved. When he isn’t being the “Am Am Werewolf” in Courtney King’s General direction he’s pretty fun since he’s basically a Dogboy.
6/10
- IDK if Will cameos or even gets a mention in the Fever Swamp comics besides sharing the name “Blake” with a main character. Hit me up if he ever appears in anything else. Fanfic Will’s in the Readmore.
Non-Canon
The Werewolves of Fever Swamp by Monokuma_memes(X): My own Will and I’m not deluded enough to rate my own writing, so read it yourself and make your voice heard. He’s gay and has trauma and that’s all I’m spoiling now.
?/10
You Never Grow Out of Your Goosebumps Phase by bluemandycat(X): Kickstarted me actually sitting down to write my fic, mostly because I wanted to put my own fucked up Will out there. Beware because Grady and Will aren’t really healthy at the point the protags of this fic find them, but you do feel a little bad for Will when he’s not being a dick. For what little we see of him, very interesting.
6 bullets from Cassie/10
Goosebumps United... (2014) by Lord Candycane(X): Aw yes, the Infinity War of Goosebumps/j. Not much for Will to do in this fic besides cameo every once in a while, since there are like...100 characters here. Though I do like the idea that Grady and Cassie just keep him in check like it’s their job. He also gets to be emo about being a Werewolf here! No gay undertones, since Grady holds most of them in that one chase scene.
5/10
Goosebumps United (2021) by Sweetiebuttons(Ao3:X and FFN:X): Okay, so SB made a fic based on Candycane’s fic(basically their own take on the idea) and just went hamwild. It’s crossposted on FFN and Ao3 but for some reason under different names and also FFN has more chapters uploaded(maybe they’re retooling the fic for ao3??). SB portrays him much more sympathetically, sometimes to a kinda cheesy degree? Honestly. it’s pretty endearing in a “webkinz milk cat” kind of way. Absolutely love him becoming friends with people that did this to him:
Tumblr media
Not to expose myself for having terrible taste as a kid, but I like the touch of comparing Will to another gay-coded werewolf. Will gets to meet other werewolves and it’s definitely fascinating to think how he’s the only lycanphobic werewolf in GB canon - there’s even some more Fever Swamp lore based on what little we had in the first United fic. I do like how Will is now the straight man and just has to deal with constant BS from his fellow werewolves, and I especially like the idea of Will not being comfortable with how gung-ho Grady is about being a werewolf.
The dialogue is kinda confusing, and Will just goes all over the place and never finishes the interactions so we don’t get much. But I do like the ideas that are presented here.
6/10
Werewolf of Fever Swamp by sweetie buttons(X): Okay this fic is a revisionist piece on Grady having a Father/Son relationship with the Swamp Hermit, and Grady doesn’t become a Werewolf. Will is irrelevant in SB’s sequel to this fic, but for what was shone he sticks closely to his book counterpart. Except for the reveal, because like...Will did not even feel like he wanted to eat Grady. Like every description of him felt like Will wanted to cry and throw-up over how beautiful his boyfriend is. This Will would’ve bit Grady on purpose 100% and the Hermit and [REDACTED] were homophobic to get in the way of that/j.
5/10
Welcome to Goosebumps High by DanielDaponte(X): Not much to say, its Monster High but Goosebumps and it got put on permanent hiatus. But Will shows up for one chapter, now an adult and the school’s gym teacher(C.E. Teacher??), which is honestly the funniest thing that has happened with the character. I also forgot about the main character thirsting after him, which is doubly funny.
10 Werewolf Thirst Traps/10
The Goosebumps School(and it’s many sequels) by SquadMemberK17(X): This series is so fascinating, I could go on about how bonkers the sequels get and how weirdly engaging this self-ship fic about the hat guy from the Dead House live action episode. Like, a bunch of Goosebumps protags are brutally murdered in this fic it is so mindboggling. BUT we are here for Will and he’s a side character in the MC’s friendgroup, in fact, he’s the first person she meets. Will is weird because the author has a bunch of weird ships besides the main one with her self-insert, but Will gets paired with Hannah Stoneman from Werewolf Skin in what I can only call...Monster race shipping? Will honestly had more chemistry with the main character and Grady. Speaking of Grady!
The plot has Sarabeth doing weird shit to destroy the main character for some reason and it would take forever to explain, but one of her plans include getting the Swamp Hermit to kill the MC and Will. You see, in this canon the Swamp hermit killed Grady when he got turned and reveals Will’s past to the MC. Will then saves MC and kills the hermit, and after this traumatizing event it’s never talked about again?? Also, Grady’s cameo just involves his severed head so have fun with that (ToT). Will still had better chemistry with a Dead Grady than he did with HANNAH.
Goosebumps Adventure by Stone-Man85(X): It took me too long to realize this fic plagiarized the Haunting Hour movie, and even a more embarrassing amount of time to realize Grady and Will don’t show up (even in the Fever Swamp chapter). This led to a rabbithole that decimated one of my non-GB discords, but as for the Fever Swamp chapter I did not expect that much homophobia to be thrown into my face. Also, RL Stine is a real person in this fic and dies in the first chapter.
-85/10 a plague upon the Author’s house.
- I’m not talking about the fic where a dude’s fursona has a yaoi moment with the Movie version of Will. Or the Wattpad selfship fics.

Skeleton Island || Silver and Flint
@perfectmetaphore
Clouds rolled over Falmouth, the water lapping at the quay as tourists bustled into the National Maritime Museum to experience the ‘Pirates of the Nassau’ exhibition. There were people of every generation milling about for whatever their passions were. For the children, there was a section on cartoon pirates and the Muppets. While teenagers and adults got to enjoy the entirely fictional Captain Jack Sparrow and Edward Kenway.
The place was packed to the rafters and Professor James McGraw couldn’t argue that the allure of pop culture did have its benefits. After all, it was the second time in ten years that a lecture theatre was full of people willing and eager to listen to him talk. And if only one person learned something that sparked their curiosity, James would be proud.
The sign outside the lecture theatre read: Pirates, Monsters, Myths or Outcasts? And all one hundred seats were filled with ready and eager pirate fans. Some had even come in fancy dress store pirate hats and eyepatches. It was a bit naff, but they did seem to write notes as he spoke.
‘Black Bart, Edward Teach, Anne Bonny and Calico Jack. They all had something to say from what they left behind,’ James McGraw said as he opened his lecture. ‘Their stories are like the ship of Theseus. The more we tell them, the less we actually know.’
He clicked to a slide depicting Tim Curry as Long John Silver. It got a giggle from the younger listeners. ‘To start, let me tell you the story of Captain Long John Silver and the Curse of the Urca Gold...’

Gig Review: Mom Jeans - Boston Music Room [18/01/2019]
Tumblr media
The hype for this tour has been building ever since it was announced, and with it being Mom Jeans first time in the UK it’s a chance for fans over here to finally get a taste of them live. Supported by California Ska Punks Just Friends in the UK for the first time, and Essex Indie Rockers Don’t worry it’s sure to be a treat of a night. Being my first time attending a gig at Boston Music Rooms I’m delighted to arrive and note the all over atmosphere as great, with ‘American Boy’ by Estelle/Kanye playing over the speakers and fans enjoying their night already by grooving away happily.
After a short wait, Don’t Worry takes to the stage and instantly pull everybody in from the corners of the room. This impressive four-piece start delivering sounds that work their way right into your heart, with personal lyrics entwined with music ranging from mellow to absolutely explosive. I notice a tear rolling down the guitarist’s cheek during the first song and can’t help but feel lucky to see such an honest performance. ‘Mood Swings & Roundabouts’ off their 2018 album ‘Who Cares Anyway?’ begins almost like a more Emo/Punk Circa Waves song, but Don’t Worry cleverly use spoken word throughout the verses creating a wonderful effect.
Tumblr media
Don’t Worry continue to deliver incredibly tight and powerful songs one after the other, leaving me wondering how they could ever be the first band of a line up. Their rhythm section really manages to hold it’s own behind the ear catching guitar lines, and both vocalists voices compliment the music they’re creating perfectly. A quiet band on the talking front, Don’t Worry captivate the crowd right through to the end of their set with everybody walking away a little bit in awe. I’m sure Don’t Worry became a new favourite band for many this evening.
Tumblr media
Just Friends are up next, and with a lot of the audience eager to see them for the first time they don’t waste anytime and jump right into it. Starting off strongly with the huge ‘Supersonic’ from their 2018 album ‘Nothing But Love’ it’s obvious their set is going to be serious fun. With lyrics like ‘you make me feel supersonic! The way you move is so hypnotic’ the crowd easily catches on and join in by shouting along. With 10 members on the small stage it could look like a stage invasion, but each member has a vital part to play in this wonderful performance. There is no way anybody in this room could possibly ignore (or want to) Just Friends as they smoothly work their way through a set so full of soul you just want to dance.
Tumblr media
‘Ryerson’ shows a bit more of Just Friend’s punk side, with impressive drum work from their drummer during the intro. The happiness emanating from the band is catching, it being so obvious how much they enjoy being on stage together and playing their music for people. The crowd reciprocates this feeling by dancing, it evident everybody in the venue is thoroughly enjoying the moment. Just Friends do not limit their music at all, and they really prove what they’re capable of during their set when the catchy vocals of ‘Never Gonna Bring You Down’ kick in. It’s thoroughly impressive how every member manages to play their parts perfectly and groove around such a packed stage, and as the set comes to a close the mood calms a bit and the emotional vocals of ‘Welcome Mats’ are projected across the room and the crowd look completely engrossed.
Tumblr media
Mom Jeans walk on stage and the crowd erupts with cheers of anticipation and excitement. When the ever-sweet guitar and drum lines of ‘Death Cup’ begin my excitement shoots up a major notch with it being one of my favourites, and seemingly a crowd favourite too. Mom Jeans are one of those bands that is somehow even better live, due to the energy and connection that seems to bring the band together in front of you. Every note is played just right and instantly the crowd is dancing and singing the lyrics right back at the band.
Tumblr media
With guitarists Eric and Bart and drummer Austin all singing at points the dynamic works incredibly and adds so much to what makes Mom Jeans original. Although the unique vocal harmonies in ‘Danger Can’t’ really capture your attention their bassist Gabe plays some of the funkiest bass lines in ‘Danger Can’t’ making me think about learning bass just so I can attempt to make sounds as good as he does.
Launching into the ‘season 9 ep2-3’, a single from their 2018 album ‘Puppy Love’, the energy in the room heightens and the crowd really start to go for it shouting out heartfelt lyrics while getting pushed around, looking like they couldn’t be any happier to be where they are right now. Mom Jeans create the type of music that takes hold in your memories and really ties you to the band, something that is evident in fans faces as I look around the room.
Tumblr media
Cracking a few jokes in between songs, Mom Jeans don’t wait for long to get back to the music as ‘Sorry it’s just people are complaining…’ comes over the speakers and both band and crowd look ready to erupt as they begin playing ‘Edward 40hands’. The three way vocal harmonies of the band are joined by a few hundred other voices echoing the words back much adding even more to the positive atmosphere.
Tumblr media
With the set nearing an end a few people take the opportunity to crowd surf up to the stage and the crowd really gets moving now, desperate to enjoy it while they can. ‘Poor Boxer Shorts’ offers fans one last chance to dance and they definitely don’t pass it up as the beginning guitar line is played. Mom Jeans end their set on a high, having definitely reminded the people in the room why they hold the band and their music so close.

Knock Knock
Latest Review: Starring Peter Capaldi, Pearl Mackie and Matt Lucas Guest starring: David Suchet Co-starring: Mariah Gale, Mandeep Dhillon, Colin Ryan  Ben Presley, Alice Hewkin, Bart Suavek and Sam Benjamin  Written by Mike Bartlett Directed by Bill Anderson Produced by Nikki Wilson Executive Producers: Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin First broadcast on BBC1 on Saturday May 6th at 7:20pm  This review contains spoilers and is based on a standard, non-binaural preview version of the episode.  Speaking at the BFI/Radio Times TV Festival last month, Steven Moffat remarked that one thing he'd like to do after showrunning Doctor Who is write a play. Moffat has done his bit for trafficking between the worlds of theatre and TV talent this season, however, by securing the services of both Rona Munro and feted playwright and Doctor Foster creator Mike Bartlett. King Charles III, one of Bartlett's recent and highly successful plays, is about to hit our television screens in an adapted version, whilst 2016's Wild -- a piece based loosely on the Edward Snowden case which took a radical turn into almost Who-esque territories -- has shown Bartlett's affinity with relevant material. Now, it would seem, is very much Mike Bartlett's time to clamber aboard the occasionally creaking but always smartly veneered Whoniverse. Knock Knock is, let's face it, a rather cheesy title, gesturing at those repetitive old "Who's there?" jokes that probably still generate endless amusement among the programme's youngest fans. But by giving this reference an adult spin -- for this is a riff on the venerable haunted house subgenre -- Bartlett cleverly blurs together child and adult sensibilities right from the outset. Playing with the Doctor's relationship to Bill, and having her address him as "grandfather", is also a lovely throwback to the 1960s show; I initially responded to it in exactly this manner, as a gift to long-term fans. But cunningly, it also slots perfectly well into the theme of this episode's eventual and familial denouement, a smart tongue-and-groove piece of thematic construction (and generational confusion) that's hidden in plain sight.   Writers new to Who have a tendency to emulate the leading tropes of their commissioning showrunner -- Matthew Graham's Fear Her often felt like RTD-lite, and Stephen Thompson's The Curse of the Black Spot replayed Moffat's favoured device of 'technology gone awry'. Here, we get an aspect of the ordinary, everyday world transformed into a fantastical threat, something which, though it has an extensive history in the programme, has also become part of the Moffat repertoire. And there's a kind of variant take on "are you my mummy?" which harks all the way back to The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. Having said that, Bartlett doesn't only seek to fit seamlessly into the Moffat-esque way of things, and also stamps his own mark on proceedings, notably in a comedic sequence criticising the state of students' rental accommodation in the UK, albeit imparting its critical stance with a deftly light touch. On the minus side, I felt that Bartlett was sometimes a little cramped by the demands of a 43-minute single episode when he's evidently used to working with longer dramatic forms that have more space to unfold characterisation (something that the serialised Doctor Foster achieved quite brilliantly). Since the haunted house story calls for a number of characters who can be bumped off, Bartlett is also pretty much obligated to give Bill a decent number of housemates. This immediately causes a difficulty because each one threatens to become a student stereotype or a single-note creation. Perhaps slightly fewer students to be menaced by Wester Drumlins -- sorry, Bill's new residence -- would have helped on this front. The tightly-coiled demands of an episode that has to set up atmospheric menace before delivering a pay-off 'reveal' also make life slightly difficult for guest star David Suchet, who is required to oscillate between ordinary-but-odd, outright creepy, and something far more essentially and basically human. It's a tough ask, and in places Suchet's performance seemed a little too mannered to me. But regardless of that, Doctor Who is fortunate to attract actors of such calibre, and I was admittedly disappointed that fan speculation regarding 'the Landlord' (that he would become a recurring character of some mysterious and Time Lordly status) fell wide of the mark. Suchet's character is very much a one-shot, belonging to this story alone.    Series 10's Vault storyline continues to gather pace, and the concluding moment -- withholding a reverse shot that would have revealed who was in there -- was deliberately cheeky, and all the more effective for it. But an episode entitled Knock Knock is bound to rely, more than most Doctor Who, on its sound design and soundtrack. On the whole, this worked very well, though the level of aural threat could perhaps have been more intense (I'll be interested to see whether advance hype surrounding this as a very scary episode is reflected in the general fan and audience response, as well as how much difference the binaural version makes). I'm a horror fan, but for my money this was far stronger on atmosphere and build-up than any genuine sense of shocks, jumps or 'scares'. The monsters' mass presence was, in the end, effective without being remarkable -- we dodged a Tractator-level incident, to be sure, but all the CGI hordes still felt generically competent rather than truly memorable.   And packing an episode with wood-related content is, I suspect, always going to be a risk in terms of inciting reviewers' puns or provocations (you can just imagine how any journalist looking for a punchline would reach for their finest grain of 'wooden' material). Actually, focusing on this dimension -- something that has rarely featured in Doctor Who other than as a challenge for the sonic screwdriver -- gives this episode a very specific and quasi-historical flavour. Yes, it's a present-day story, but instead of brutalist concrete-morphing creatures, steel-and-chrome monstrosities, or electronic/nano-techno-villains, there is something almost pleasingly quaint, if not retro, about a good, old wood-based threat. There's a sense of sedimented history, and the dust of ages, that setlles over 'Knock Knock', making the eventual reveal of Eliza's presence (and identity) an integral part of this 'return of the repressed past'. Knock Knock does what the best of contemporary Doctor Who has always strived for: it combines fantastical threats with social commentary and moments of touching emotion and humanity, at the same time as fusing 'child' and 'adult' levels of meaning. As the proverbial 'family television' it also uncovers a gothic, dysfunctional family -- one that needs to be fixed by the Doctor's intervention. Holding on to the past at any cost is shown to be a powerful mistake, and 'Knock Knock' is ultimately about a very different kind of fear to its earlier evocations of creaking floorboards and unseen forces, zeroing in on the fear of loss, and all the misguided actions it can provoke, rather than notching up a villainous case of megalomania or 'evil'. In this, it marks its distance from certain previous incarnations of the show, and develops an approach highlighted in The Pilot. But the question that remains, given the Doctor's chatty engagement with the Vault's occupant, is whether he too, like the Landlord, is mistakenly holding on to an aspect of the past... In a week or two, we'll start to get some answers.  http://reviews.doctorwhonews.net/2017/05/knock_knock.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

Storytellers and Holiday Entertainment
Another MUST DO for the Epcot International Festival of the Holidays is to stroll the World Showcase stopping to see costumed performers bring the traditions of their home countries to Epcot with holiday stories and music, along with a variety of other international festive entertainment.
The new Hanukkah Storyteller (located between Morocco and France)
Tip – As soon as you get into the park pick up a times guide (or two) for the week, because this is the only way to find out what times performances are happening in each pavilion.
Chip ’n Dale’s Christmas Tree Spree
Chip & Dale are on a scavenger hunt, collecting ornaments for their Christmas tree—and they need your help!
Here’s a look at this year’s map!
To get started, simply purchase a map and stickers ($6.99 plus tax) from select merchandise locations including Pin Central, Disney Traders, and World Traveler at International Gateway.
As you travel around World Showcase, be on the lookout for Chip & Dale in each World Showcase pavilion.
Once you spot them, add the corresponding ornament sticker to your map. Then, take your completed map to Disney Traders or World Traveler and exchange it for a festive surprise, courtesy of Chip & Dale!
Tip – Look carefully for Chip & Dale on wreaths on the Holiday Kitchen buildings…some are hard to find, so be patient!!!
IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth
The Illuminations: Reflections of Earth nighttime spectacular of fireworks, special effects, flame torches and more includes a special holiday finale nightly until December 30, 2018.
This is the view from the area between France and the United Kingdom pavilions.
This will be the final holiday season for IllumiNations, as the show is currently scheduled to conclude at the end of summer 2019, with new thrills on World Showcase Lagoon set to debut immediately afterward (more on this soon).
Tip – While most of the fireworks and special effects take place in the air, I still like to arrive 30 minutes before Illuminations: Reflections of Earth begins (make sure to check your times guide) to find a spot close to the water so I can see all of the magic!
Meet Santa and Mrs. Claus
If you are looking to take an iconic Holiday photo, head to The American Adventure pavilion where you can pose for a photo and share their holiday wishes with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Tip – The lines to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus can get quite long, so if you are visiting with little ones try to have one adult wait in line while the other adult keeps the little elves busy with the Kidcot Fun Spot at the pavilion or by grabbing a snack from the nearby Holiday Kitchen.

Big US tobacco company buys stakes in Canadian cannabis growers, American hemp firm
Published February 8, 2018 | By Bart Schaneman A publicly traded U.S. tobacco company has bought controlling stakes in two Canadian marijuana producers and invested in a North Carolina hemp grower, making what is believed to be the first foray by a significant tobacco business into the cannabis industry. Alliance One International, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol AOI, said it acquired a 75% equity position in Canada’s Island Garden and an 80% stake in Goldleaf Pharm. Terms of the transactions were not disclosed. The moves were first reported by New Cannabis Ventures. Alliance One is an independent leaf tobacco merchant based in Morrisville, North Carolina, that serves large multinational cigarette manufacturers. The company selects, purchases, processes, packs, stores and ships leaf tobacco. Alliance One works with contract growers in North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Europe. The company’s sales for the first nine months of its fiscal year totaled $1.2 billion Alliance One’s purchase follows a similar move in October by global alcohol giant Constellation Brands, which bought 9.9% of Smiths Falls, Ontario-based Canopy Growth for 245 million Canadian dollars ($190 million). Both transactions mark the alcohol and tobacco industries’ initial attempts to capitalize on the rapidly growing marijuana industry – particularly in Canada, which is slated to legalize adult-use marijuana this summer. “This might be the key piece that (the industry) needs,” said Nic Easley, CEO of Denver-based 3C Consulting. “Constellation was the first (outside player), a major alcohol company. “Having a major tobacco company come in – let’s bring in some firearms and we have a party.” Canadian acquisitions According to a news release, Alliance One purchased the two Canadian cultivators in January through a subsidiary, Canadian Cultivated Products. Island Garden is one of three licensed producers tapped to supply Prince Edward Island with cannabis. The company has a 20,000-square-foot indoor growing facility in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and plans to expand its facility by 250,000 square feet of greenhouse capacity. Goldleaf Pharm is an applicant to become a licensed medical marijuana cultivator in Ontario, Canada. The company is completing construction of a 20,000-square-foot indoor growing facility with plans to add 710,000 square feet of production over a three-year period. Alliance One entered the hemp business in December, acquiring a 40% equity position in North Carolina-based Criticality, with an option for consolidation of up to 50% by 2020. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Criticality grows industrial hemp in North Carolina under the state’s pilot program for CBD extraction. The hemp company plans to expand to other states in 2018, CEO Brian Moyer told Marijuana Business Daily. He said Alliance One is buying cannabis companies because it wants to “leverage their core competencies in new and emerging markets.” The tobacco company also brings infrastructure to the deal, Moyer said, adding, “They have global expertise in growing and processing.” Start of a trend? A North Carolina hemp farmer who is familiar with the deal, Bob Crumley, said the tobacco industry is almost certain to increase investments in the cannabis industry. “R.J. Reynolds and other big tobacco companies have always had, in the back of their minds, one day being in the cannabis business,” said Crumley, president of Founder’s Hemp. Founder’s Hemp contracts with former tobacco farmers to raise hemp, then processes it into CBD products in Asheboro, North Carolina. Tobacco farmers and outdoor cannabis growers can use the same cultivating equipment and drying facilities, and both crops are labor intensive, Crumley said. He argues that cannabis’ suitability in tobacco-growing areas explains why hemp was made legal in the 2014 Farm Bill. “It was politicians from tobacco states who said, ‘We need something to replace tobacco,’ who are responsible more than anyone for hemp being in the U.S. today,” Crumley said. In its news release, Alliance One said its five-year goal is to become a leader in CBD production and consumer products. J. Pieter Sikkel, Alliance One’s president and CEO, said the company intends to “broaden our business portfolio over the next three to four years by focusing on consumer-driven agricultural products, with increased operating margins when compared to our historical leaf processing businesses.” For the first nine months of Alliance One’s fiscal year, sales increased 8.8% to $1.2 billion mainly driven by the larger South American crop and a 7.5% increase in average sales price due to a favorable product mix. Alliance One’s net earnings for that nine-month period were $56.9 million, or $6.34 per share.
