Chicago Weekend 23 May-26 May 2024:
Take Offs and Landings Rilo Kiley (Barsuk) (originally released in 2001, this reissue came out in 2023)
Having not paid any attention to Rilo Kiley when they first appeared on the scene means I am endlessly trying to understand their back catalog. Today it barely pays to engage in a new band that is actually old, because if you just randomly buy an older album, such as this which was their debut full length, you will discover that it is different from the original pressing. Making matters worse, I actually thought this was their debut EP expanded (because that 1999 EP is tremendously confusing in all of the permutations it comes in).
This is the band's debut full length studio which came out in 2001. It came out on the band's own label and it contained 13 tracks. Barsuk reissued it later in the year and it suddenly contained 15 tracks.
Then in 2011 Barsuk reissued the album on vinyl for the first time and it became a double album with the same amount of tracks. It evidently had some weird etching on the runout grooves. Then Barsuk, who seemingly loves this album reissued it on white vinyl before reissuing it again in 2023 which is the version I've ended up here. All so very confusing, but this was certainly cheap compared to sealed copies of the etched version or the white vinyl version.
Above are the album cover and the back of the album. Below you can find a close up shot of the hype sticker.

Below you will find shots of the insert included in the album, both front and back.

Someone on discogs claims that he fails to understand why this isn't a gatefold cover if it is a double album. Why are record collectors idiots? Not all double albums are gatefolds, dude. Think London Calling for a great example. Yikes.
The four sides of the record labels appear below. While Side 4 has one track, it does not have a label, so what you see is the area sans label (it almost looks like the whole album, but it isn't.

Thursday, December 7, 2023 4pm ET: Feature LP: Death Cab For Cutie - Plans (2005)
Plans is the fifth studio album by American rock band Death Cab for Cutie, released August 30, 2005 on Atlantic Records. Emerging from the Pacific Northwest in the early 2000s, Death Cab first rose to prominence on the strength of its confessional lyricism and textured indie rock sound. Following a longstanding partnership with indie label Barsuk, the band made the leap to a major label,…

10 years since game changer album 'Not Art' by Big Scary was released - to celebrate we've pressed a limited edition transparent orange vinyl, available via our shop or your fav record store. Order limited edition transparent orange vinyl
This album opened many doors for Big Scary and ultimately led to the official beginnings of Pieater. We have much to thank for the music behind the monstera leaf.
'Not Art' allowed Tom Iansek to develop his production skills, he explored sounds, textures, techniques and got to work with some incredible NYC talents first via gospel singers at Broadway Inspirational Voices and then Tom Elmhirst mixing the album. Jo also began navigating the industry beyond solely a musician, foraying into developing management skills and business nous, to make her one of the most talented & well rounded industry professional today.
We threw a party at our first HQ 'Mixed Business', released in the US with Barsuk Records, toured OS multiple times, got nominated for awards, won awards, played many fantastic festivals, grew the live band with Gus Rigby, Christopher Port, Callum Barter (FOH). We thankfully had the belief of Justin Cosby (Vale) and Mark Dodds at Inertia, Evan Davis at Village Sounds, Grant Gillies at GaGa, Natasha Bowron & Melody Forghani. It was these passionate early team members who helped make the difference to enable Big Scary to grow.
10 years on the music still sounds incredible, my current fav is 'Invest' and I truly can't wait to watch Jo and Tom perform this record again one day. Go give the brilliant ‘Not Art’ another spin, very happy listening 🧡
