MAJOR NEWS FOR CROCODILE FANS In a newly published paper, Martin et al. describe a new genus of sebecid, Dentaneosuchus from the middle Eocene of France Whats cool about this animal is not just that its part of a group of terrestrial crocodylomorphs, i.e. croc relatives that lived and hunted on land But its also enormous The lower jaw was around 90cm long in the smaller specimen, which puts it in a similar size range as the enormous Barinasuchus from Miocene of South America pictured below (comparisson by Aledgn) this makes it perhaps the biggest land predator of Europe since the extinction of the dinosaurs.
PS: The paper doesn't go into it much, but among the lower estimates is a mere 3-4 meters. While the proportions are unknown, such a low body length seems rather unlikely given that this would mean the head was a whole third of the whole body. 5 to 6 meters seems a lot more reasonable.

A Dentaneosuchus crassiproratus, the newly described Sebecid crocodylomorph hailing from the Middle Eocene Sables du Castrais Formation of Southern France 41-37 million years ago, strolls along a riverbank with the head of a Lophiodon crushed in its jaws. D.crassiprotatus had a large skull with powerful jaws that was nearly a meter in length, and the animal itself could also reach a length of up to 5 meters long, making it one of the largest sebecids alongside the South American Barinasuchus as well as possibly Europe鈥檚 largest terrestrial predator during the Eocene. So even after the extinction of the dinosaurs, it seems that European mammals would still have to somehow live under the shadow of large sauropsids such as Dentaneosuchus and other crocodylomorphs as well as giant birds such as the herbivorous bird Gastonis.

My dear friend, thank you so much for your crocodile appreciation, but the idea that crocs and their relatives have only been Danger Logs since their split with the dinosaurs is simply not the case! Since their group, the pseudosuchians, diverged from the dinosaurs and pterosaurs almost 250 million years ago, they have held numerous ecological roles on every continent, including but not limited to:
Apex terrestrial predators, such as Postosuchus, Fasolasuchus (the largest terrestrial predator ever, outside the largest theropod dinosaurs, at 3-4 tonnes), Baurusuchus, Boverisuchus, Barinasuchus, and Quinkana. The latter 3 actually evolved after the time of the dinosaurs, and our human ancestors actually encountered Quinkana when they settled Australia.
Large marine predators, mostly the Metriorhynchids.
Armored herbivores, including the Aetososaurs, Simosuchus, and Armadillosuchus.
Large bipedal herbivores, such as Shuvosaurus, Effigia, and Sillosuchus.
And finally, small arboreal predators, namely the Mekosuchids.
Ironically, one role croc ancestors didn't fill back in the Triassic when the group first evolved was the Danger Log, because that niche was already filled, by giant amphibians, and by the crocs' archosaur relatives, the phytosaurs.
True, creatures we would recognize today as crocodilians have been around since at least the Late Cretaceous, but to say that's all they've ever been is overlooking an diverse and beautiful lineage spreading back nearly 250 million years.
love how crocodiles evolved like tens of millions of years ago and then were just like "boom. got it in one. dangerous log. that's my thing" and have been kicking it ever since

Dentaneosuchus, the new, roughly Barinasuchus-sized sebecid from Eocene France. Now I wanna prefice this by saying that this is reconstruction is not gospel. Sebecids are a rather poorly known group and there is a lot of guesswork, a lot of unknowns and a lot of things that are subject to change For instance, I based the outline on Sebecus, but if you used proportions more similar to baurusuchids, you'd get a larger animal (as is often the case with Barinasuchus), so really, while this is meant to give a general idea of the animal, its not infallible and doesn't need to be followed to a T
