The Miles Behind- BarclayPierce!

Sometimes Nica wishes she could drive. She yearns to be able to get in the car and just go, chasing the highway horizon, music playing in the background as the time otherwise passes in silence, letting her head clear.

In the solitude and safety of the empty car, she thinks she’d find a sort of meditation, an inner peace. Nica would finally be moving forward, toward something, the repetitive motions of maneuvering the vehicle shutting down the anxious, restless parts of her brain.

While she’s endlessly fond of and grateful for her family, a small part of her longs for the peace of driving on her own, just for a while.

Andy first noticed this when they drove out to Chicago. He’d been worried the long drive would take a toll, something he’d feared was proven correct the quieter Nica became. But when he’d offered, she brushed off his offers of a stop, her piercing, beautiful eyes focused on the road ahead. He noticed her shoulders didn’t hold the same tension they would on bad days, and she hadn’t realized it but she was softly humming along to the radio, her face calm and lost in thought. By the time the sun had set, the road in front of them only visible by car and moon light, she had fallen asleep peacefully beside him.

After that, Andy made it a point to take her on the occasional long ride. Sometimes he’d use a trip or a weekend getaway as an excuse, and other times he’d simply grab his keys and ask “Wanna come?” Or “Let’s get lost.”

On those rides, they didn’t need to say anything. Occasionally one of them would softly share what was on their mind, offering some of the more vulnerable secrets they kept safely hidden. From time to time they would sing along to the music, exchanging smiles and laughter. But mostly they looked ahead, his hand over hers, still as they let the world pass by.

Nica sometimes wishes she could drive by herself, but if that’s not possible, she would gladly sit in the passenger seat with Andy beside her, just the two of them.

Putting the miles behind them. Together.

Maybe it was because he was from a different generation, but Andy wasn’t quite fond of the habit of taking pictures everywhere. The kids would do it all the time, Lexy would typically drive him insane by accident making feel like a tired old man for complaining. It was insane to think about how better adjusted to modern stuff Chucky was in comparison to him. 

He would also call him a tired old man. 

Glen had it practically as a habit part of their love language, they would want to take pictures with him anytime their were excited about something. Actually, Andy was almost sure he learned how to decently smile for a camera out of the constant repetition. His smiling pictures progressively became less of a forced awkward mess since they came into his life. 

He couldn’t thank them enough for that when Nica wielded the phone camera for the first time, cheerfully asking him to let her have one picture with him. 

“ C’mon, It’s not like I’m gonna be uploading it to Instagram or something.” She reminded him, almost ironically. “ I’m still a wanted criminal, remember? No one else will see it, just the two of us.” 

Unlike in the many times he would be chased by the kids, he seemed hesitant. Perhaps a bit insecure. 

“ Alright, but I warn you. It’s not going to be a cute one.” He joked, hiding what his inner thoughts meant. “ I’m tired and my hair is messy. Lexy wouldn’t dare point the camera at me right now, unless she wanted to make fun of me for the group chat.” 

It was exactly what Nica wanted, but he couldn’t tell. Always so sweet and oblivious, he thought she was just messing around. 

“ I don’t care, I want to form memories with you.” She explained, insisting on the matter. “ We barely get time for that, so we may have to find it on the little things… like your messy hair and my baggy eyes.” 

That was so sweet to hear that he had to throw the tough facade away.  He just had to, there was nothing else he could do about it. She had that effect on him, a product of the dangerous combination of how pretty and incredibly skillful with words he found her. 

She approached him really close and he smiled for the camera as he would have smiled for her. Still, he was hoping his shy smile wouldn’t reveal him as hopelessly infatuated as he truly felt deep inside. 

However, he had no idea Nica was about to make that image the background of her phone. Only for a few days, while she was away from him and the curious stares of the kids peeking to check on her screen. 

They never seemed to have much time to spend together, but she would always have him in that picture.
