It’s been a minute since I posted a Goodwill find, but I have a fun one to post today - (most of) Barbie’s Color ‘n Curl play set (sorry the light wasn’t great today).

The play set came with a working battery operated dryer (I put batteries in but sadly this one no longer works), a wig stand, various curlers/pins/ribbons/brush/comb, four wigs that used the same color change hair as the Color Magic Barbie (these wigs have definitely been through the color and cut process a few times but I think I can getting them looking cute again), two bottles of color change solution (I’m given to understand these were basically one acid and one base solution and you can create solutions from baking soda or vinegar to duplicate them), and a Fashion Queen head.

And since I actually had a spare body of the type the Fashion Queen used, this beauty just has to wait until the wig styling is done to model some new looks:

And along with this set there were a bunch of the original Barbie and Family doll pamphlets for dolls, fashions, houses, cases, and play sets. I’m going to spend so much time going through these, they are super neat:

Silver in a pretty dress, that ISN'T her usual one!

Some of you may already know this, but I LOVE drawing frilly and poofy dresses! ESPECIALLY when they're moving!!!

I love the ways the folds rearrange themselves!!!

This first dress wasn't really inspired by some barbie doll dress, just a random redesign I guess??

I feel like the lineart isn't that visible though, but I'm too lazy to fix it lol

This dress was requested by @tea-132 and I thank them!!!

It's REALLY pretty and I would've missed out on it otherwise aqnd it was extremely fun to draw so thanks a lot :DD

And yes, before you ask, she will come in more poses I just need to figure them out and nothing seemed more fitting for this dress than the 'joyful-walk-with-a-new-skirt' pose!!

I will say that I totally put no effort into the design on the outer lace and ibis Paint was a giant help with the stars (I love you ibis, marry me <333)

I'm happy with how it turned out and be prepared to expect more dresses soon

Over the years, Barbie has been an astronaut many, many times, so I am going to preface this by saying this is not an exhaustive list of the number of times Barbie has been to space. But Barbie's space explorer aesthetic has changed over the years and some of these are super interesting!

The original astronaut gear (and the rerelease in the "My Favourite Career" set) was very much informed by the actively ongoing space race. Barbie is packaged with an American flag and a relatively sedate spacesuit.

I mention sedate, because compare that to how the astronaut Barbies looked in 1985, 20 years on from the first time Barbie went to the moon!

Marketed as "packaged with sparkly skirt and tights", Barbie is combining space travel with runway fashion. Can't explore space if you don't look cute!

In 1994, Barbie is no longer dressed in bright pink, though her moon rocks do glow-in-the-dark. Interesting to note that though Barbie has a USA flag patch on her spacesuit on her left arm, the flag she is holding bears her own name and branding.

Come 2013, Barbie is no longer content with merely exploring space or landing on the moon.

In an official NASA collaboration, Barbie is now exploring Mars. Her spacesuit is now a combination of white and pink, though her accessories are now glowing pink.

2020 brought us the space discovery playset. Barbie is now in a muted blue suit with a pink headset but what I really love about this playset is that she has a puppy with her who has his own rocket ship.

There is one more particularly interesting Barbie in space that I want to talk about but I will save that for a separate post as this is already enough to scroll past.

I posted some pictures previously of a vintage Barbie Color 'N Curl Set I got from Goodwill. I had fun playing with it and using the various accessories to style the wigs (which sadly had already been cut but the styles were cute). One of the wigs had obviously been partially dipped in the color change solution but not completely changed:

So I finally decided to try changing the wig color completely with the color change solution (which I made by mixing baking soda and water). And look at how rich the purple color turned out:

And it look really cute on Barbie too:
