griddlehark Barbie heist AU, divergent timeline 2020's. Harrow is working on her final thesis project, something that will make or break her career/future. she's so close to being done, but she's missing one important thing: footage from the lost media Barbie (1983). a movie that was originally projected to break the box office and usher in a new era of media, it ended up shelved due to corporate bureaucracy with most copies destroyed, never to see the light of a theater. only one complete copy is rumored to exist, but it's location is lost along with its director, former legendary film maker John Gaius, who disappeared -- seemingly off the face of the planet -- soon after the movie was shelved.

hijinks ensue, and Harrow ends up having to rope in her longtime childhood enemy/rival/dubious subject of multiple erotic dreams Gideon Nav in order to plan and execute the heist. with the director missing, and everyone else involved either sworn to secrecy or just as hard to find, Harrow and Gideon will need to dig deep to find a way to work together and overcome their troubled history.

the closer they get to each other, the closer they get to the truth -- but as they piece together the mystery of Barbie (1983), they end up stumbling on a worldwide conspiracy that, if revealed, could end up having nuclear consequences.

Today I remembered that my favorite thing about having so many AUs is to pick up 2 AUs like Barbie dolls and clack their faces together while making smooching noises.

Behold my beloved DCxDP AU amalgamation monster: DeamonTwinAU and PhantomThiefAU (aka: Selina gives Danny a slutty slutty cat suit, good times)

The story vaguely goeth thusly: Danny is a halfa, the Balance, the Bridge Between Worlds, he is....... the Observants' glorified gofer. You see, there are a lot of cursed/enchanted/ghostly artefacts floating around loose in the living Realm and they need Danny to go retrieve them. Danny would rather not, but they just won't leave him alone about it. Can't a guy just live? At least let him poop in peace! Ancients! Fine, he'll do it if it'll get them to shut up. (Spoiler: it does, in fact, not get them to shut up.)

But you see, Danny has a secret: he was raised in an assassin ninja cult (at least for the early years) before getting adopted by the Fentons. Now the killing? Not a fan, no thanks, he's working on not increasing his kill count, thx. But the sneaking? He could use that. Sneaky ninjas are also good thieves, right? So he cobbles together a knock off League of Assassins outfit, buys a cheap portable lock picking set, and decides to make a game of how far can he get without using his powers (much. He's new at this okay?)

Batman is not having fun. There's some (possible?) League assassin running around stealing verified cursed/magical artefacts! Is Talia planning something? Is Ra's planning something? (Isn't he for real dead? Silly reader, no one is ever for real dead in DC.)

Robin is super frustrated. For all the same reasons Batman is but also because he just knows this new rogue is taunting him. Personally. Because he's Damian al Ghul Wayne and the whole world revolves around him, obviously. (And also because he once pointed at Robin and laughed before jumping out a window.)

Selina is intrigued. Who is this kid? How does he know what to go after? How does he keep evading the bats? Luckily she runs into him mid heist (fortunately they had different targets, she's intrigued but not enough to hand over her shinies to him) and oh he's adorable! She has to train him, it would drive Brucie up the wall. But then she sees his face and oh, she knows exactly who he is, even if he seems oblivious.

Because Danny? He's in Gotham for the ecto, for the Thomas Wayne full ride scholarship he managed to snag, and also because for some reason Gotham is full of so many cursed/ghost artefacts. (Lady Gotham is seething, she worked hard to collect all those curses! But this is her beloved dark knight's kid and she kinda wants him home. But she also doesn't want to give up her curses!) Back to the point: Danny doesn't care about ANY of the rich bougie people. The Waynes give out a lot of scholarships? Cool, that's nice and all. They probably also rub elbows with Vlad or Sam's parents. No thanks. Doesn't care. He's got better things to worry about.

Selina has got a plan though! She's gonna teach this boy how to thief properly, starting with better tools (including the slutty, slutty cat burglar outfit). She also knows that she can't let any of the Waynes (in or out of costume) meet Danny (out of costume). So does Lady Gotham. So does the universe apparently (or just Clockwork maybe), because all kinds of unlikely things keep happening to prevent it.

Danny is having so much fun though! He's learning new skills. Selina is giving him an allowance so he's not living off ramen and peanut butter sandwiches, he's doing well in school, he gets to stretch his ghost powers regularly to go above the smog cover and star gaze in peace. Everything's coming up Danny.

Selina decides it's time to flaunt her find in front of Brucie and makes Danny go to a gala as her date, she spends the entire time clinging to his arm and introducing him around to everyone. Including Bruce himself (who just so happens to have Damian in tow). Danny may not recognize Bruce, but he sure recognizes Damian, and Damian recognizes him if his utterly flabbergasted face is anything to go by. But Danny remembers what it was like living in the League. And so far as he knows Damian is still in it, he was the Demon Head's heir after all. Damian made sure of it.

Oh it. Is. ON! Now Danny is on a mission! A sibling rivalry mission! He is going to make Damian's/Robin's a living hell. Selina going on a heist that has no magical artefacts? Danny's there anyway, always have back up. That necklace in the museum has barely any powers and he wasn't even going to bother with it? Too bad, it's back on the list. He has no reason to be out at all but the bats are on patrol? Well so is Danny. Catch him if you can, suckers!

It's good for Danny, it's enrichment!

Viserys takes a cautious step towards the board - smiling at his students. "Thank you for accepting this job offer," he humored, looking around the room and familiarizing himself with everyone's faces. Some were familiar like - Aegon, Aemond and Rhaenyra, but some were new like - you, Harwin and Mysaria.

"We'll be living here, for now - until the heist happens and it won't matter wherever you go." he smiled, turning back to the map on his hands. It was a map of Old Valyria (a city that was now filled with nuclear waste) but it was his home - his father's home - and their names will be built around that.

"I thought we were using planets da-I mean sir." Aegon raises his hand. "I was supposed to be Mars, and one-eye can be Uranus." he kicked the chair in front of him - earning a small chuckle from his uncle. "I don't want to be Uranus," Aemond rolls his eye.

"Why?" Aegon frowned.

"It's an anus." Aemond turned to look at him - nailing daggers on his brother's face. "Language! Young man." Viserys scolded, walking back to the board.

He reaches for the chalk, writing on the board what names were available for the choosing. "No one is allowed to use their real names - just in case someone gets captured and etcetera," he mumbled and the crowd erupts into a chorus of agreement.

It made absolute sense to stay anonymous.

Daemon turns to look at you - a mischievous glint on his eyes. "It makes sense," you mumble - playing with a pencil. Viserys turns to look at you - a smile was on his face. "Why don't you choose first?" he offered. There were interesting names on the board.

Lorath, Lys, Myr, Norvos - but Volantis felt right.

"Volantis," you answered quickly - and the man turns to offer other people their choices of names. Daemon wraps his arms around your waist, leaning closer towards your ears. "The oldest and the proudest of all the Nine Free Cities. But Volantis has changed its name - it's Thessaloniki now." he whispered.

Viserys glares at his brother - seeing the closeness between you.

"- and you?" he raised an eyebrow.

Daemon reaches his full height.

"Rhyos. I am Rhyos."

That was the day you started calling yourself Volantis. The man beside you who was ogling at your breasts was Rhyos or Daemon. His face was familiar - you've seen him in the television - from millions of pounds to diamonds to armored cars. He's the biggest criminal in Europe and Asia. He was a fucking shark - but anyone can swim with him, you'd just feel nervous all the time.

The other guy who was staring at Mysaria's ass was Aegon or Norvos. He's not that big of a criminal - but he's wanted for stealing one of the Ambani Family's treasured jewelry. There's a saying 'Steal from the poor and they'll vote you for the next election. Steal from the rich, and they'll bite your ass.'

The guy in front of him was Aemond or Lorath. He went to jail at sixteen for leaking an unreleased episode of his favorite show - pretty much a rookie as the episode was getting aired the following day. Fuck, Game of Thrones eh?

Then there's that beautiful woman a few inches away from you. Her name was Rhaenyra - she is yet to choose a codename, but everyone already knows who she is. She used to be a model in the '00s. The most beautiful woman in the world - was what they called her. Until she was caught laundering billions of euros - she would've gotten away with it if her step-father didn't rat her out.

She's your role model. Your barbie, basically.

And the reason for why you know all of them?

You spend a lot of time reading the news.

(D-DAY 8.35 AM)

Six months of planning and it was reaching fruition. "Hands where I can see them!" you yell, pointing it at the truck driver. The first step of the plan was getting the unmarked paper bills to the Royal Mint.

"If someone calls the radio, you will answer like there is nothing wrong, okay?." Daemon briefed, pacing back and forth between the men - exuding his confident aura.

This was one of the few moments you were thankful for the minimum wage. These men were paid 1,600 euros per month - thus they didn't care whether or not their cars were getting hijacked. If their daughters were in the trunk, they wouldn't have opened it - but paper? Darling, they couldn't have given a lesser fuck.

"Now, let's go." he turned to look at you - leading the team towards the hijacked cars. Mysaria hands you a blonde wig - fixing it on while you settle the seatbelt in between your breasts.

"Don't take your eyes off the girl, we can't afford mistakes." Daemon looks at you - holding your chin softly. He takes a moment - licking his lips, then moving back and tapping the car - telling Mysaria to drive away.

"Let's find the little lamb," Mysaria breathes - driving through the empty road swiftly. "Who even takes a field trip to a Royal Mint? It sounds boring," you slump on your chair, holding the seatbelt tightly as you cruise closer to the Mint.

"Boring when you're poor, but classy when you're rich." she replied.

Entering the Mint was easy - but finding the little lamb.

"Where the fuck is she?" Mysaria curses, opening all the bathroom stalls. "It's like a game of Where is Waldo," you sigh - pointing the gun at every door you open. "What?" she raised an eyebrow, unfamiliar with the game. "It's a game where you find this little guy in a striped shirt," you explain and she rolls her eyes.

"Where is the little lamb," she rephrased the game - smiling in satisfaction as she opened the last stall. Revealing Cersie Lannister.

"Thank the Seven," you breathed - grabbing the girl by her arm and dragging her to where all the hostages were. "I-I need my phone," the girl stuttered reaching for the Iphone on Mysaria's hands.

The older woman pulls it away.

"Influencers," you mumble like a slur - earning a glare from the child.

"My boyfriend took my phone and retweeted a fucking anti-climate change movement. I don't care if I die today - I will get cancelled." she cried, and you pointed a gun at her waist - making her cries harden. "Are you serious?" you frown, biting back a loud laugh.

Being cancelled was going to be the least of her worries.

Daemon removes his mask as the last hostage puts on a blindfold. "Happy Friday, I hope everyone has had the chance to go to do their novenas. I want to say sorry for what we're doing today, it's not a happy way to end your week. Follow our instructions and you'll be safe." he smiled, Aegon nods his head - telling him that all the phones were currently under control.

"I hope that you enjoy this experience - write a book about it in the future, it might get you into a good college. Harvard or Yale, they love their sob stories." he chuckled, playing with his rifle that he named 'Dark Sister.'

A groan escapes your mouth, pointing a pistol at an old man's head. "What's the fucking pin?" you cursed, holding his Samsung with your left hand. A tear rolls down the man's eye. "Pin?" you repeat in an annoyed way - knowing that this wasn't supposed to be your job.

Another tear falls down his eyes.

"0."

"0."

"0."

He lowered his head in shame.

"0." he whispered, and a small laugh exits your mouth.

"You were acting really smart with me - and your pin is 0000?" you tease him, throwing his phone down the other sacks of phone. "Anyways, no shame in that." you chuckle, taking a step away from him.

"All the phones are unlocked, Lorath - you know what to do."

Aemond nods - smiling at you.

"Do you know why I do this?" Rhaenyra slurred - laying on your bed while she stunk of whiskey and vodka. "- because I want my sons back. I want them back from their father - whose actually not their real father." she chuckled bitterly, feeling the tears fall from her irises.

She grabs into your collar - pulling you closer to her body.

"I know where they are - they're in America with their fake grandparents, and I'll get them back once I get the money." she swore to herself, ultimately mumbling their names before falling back asleep.

so there's this fic rec podcast @ficclique and in their latest episode they discuss my Ted Lasso heist AU they will see us waving from such great heists at length! what's especially amazing about this is that two out of three of the hosts have never seen Ted Lasso but nevertheless they liked the fic enough to talk about it for nearly half an hour (also one of them thought for a while that Trent Crimm was played by Brett Goldstein. This is deeply hilarious to me.)

Anyway it's high time I made an FAQ about this but this is how you pronounce laiqualaurëlótë (which is Quenya Elvish for "green gold flower"):

laiqua - lai-kuh, like the camera Leica

laurë - lao-reh with the 'r' rolled, as in Italian 'laurea'

lótë - lo-teh, as in Spanish 'elote'

Should I have chosen a handle that was easier to spell/pronounce/remember? probably. I came up with it when I was a bored 14-year-old in computer class and now it's stuck.

As to the question of "what AU would you be in if you were in an AU fic", I would be in a historical detective mystery AU. I should like to be the glamorous gunslinging detective but realistically I would be the chaotic ingenue, à la Maud Blyth in @fahye's The Last Binding trilogy or Abby Matsuda in Deadloch.

realizing I probably should have posted about it here before, but the 30th chapter of redemption arc (link here) went up about a week and a half ago, meaning the fic is finally complete!

it's so wild to think that it's finally done! this time last year, i had just barely started posting chapters, and now, it's Big!!! it's Done!!!

I have my biases in this, I'll admit, but I genuinely read the not-so-good Doctor as bi/pan in that I don't think he particularly cares about gender when it comes to his attractions and there's textual support over the years with various iterations of him showing interest in or having chemistry with both women and men. Yes, yes, Have a Gay Old Time and all that, but his intro comic suggests, "he certainly is a queer fellow" - given that his Year One backstory is a gender-flipped Carrie, itself popularly read as a gay allegory (hell, I think his bullies even were specifically homophobic towards him), given the long affinity between LGBT+ folk and horror/identifying with the horror monsters, and even given how blissed out Nolan!Crow looked getting his hair pulled by Batman, I'd say there's a lot to work with there.

27. If they could meet a character from another show/movie/etc, who would be the most fun for them to meet?

Absolutely love this one! I've already had a ton of fun speculating with you about him meeting Dani Ardor of Midsommar, fitting because she's even a psych major if I remember correctly, and going back and forth with what could be done with such an AU. Honestly, any horror villain and/or hero(ine) would suit him because what's so great about Crane is that as Scarecrow he works within any text to reveal a character's deepest fears and relationship with fear, while also having an academic/professional interest in them as a psychiatrist. I do think I've seen posts on here speculating on the fun he'd have with Jack Seward as a potential ally and/or rival/disappointing colleague, so that's a definite one also! And because I'm predictable, it would likely not be healthy (in that he would enable/encourage her most violent instincts, but hey, at least theyr'e supporting each other?) but at least a little touching and sweet that he'd be a needed avuncular figure to Carrie White.

30. The funniest scene they had? Oh, gosh, hard to pick just one! When old school Crane declared his plan was to commit heists for more money to buy books? When he beefs it so completely and utterly with Becky and has the chutzpah to think her issue with him is that she wants him to alter that godawful Mistress of Fear straw corset and muppet mask costume? "This is a perfectly rational response to my traumatic experiences, and if you don't believe me, I'll kill you!"? His little dance of joy out the window in the first volume of Year One? The entirety of his appearance in Happy Halloween, Scooby Doo, an extension of his habit of just Showing Up Places He Has No Business Being (including other canons)? On that note, literally everything he does in the Dark Knight Trilogy as he Barbies his way through every villainous profession in Gotham's gig economy? (Though going down that easy in Batman Begins and his sassy little strut out of the truck in The Dark Knight are highlights.) For such a frightening and tragic character, the guy is funny as hell!

Bit of an au idea cause something made me rankled:

The biggest fight that happened in between Rogues was a huge blow out between Digger and Hartley. It all started when James got everyone to watch Barbie: Princess and the Pauper. James thought Hartley would like the musical element and that the rest would like the main villain.

When the two main leads met each other, Digger made a comment saying the princess shouldn't be complaining, since she had such a position of luxury. Hartley took offense as people had said similar things about him with his mother when he had still lived at home. He made some comment about gilded cages still being cages and then it devolved from there. Digger stormed out of the house and Hartley locked himself in his room.

They did not talk to each other for two weeks and refused to run heists. Len ended up letting James lock them in a room to force them to talk and work together. Digger realizes he messed up and he and Hartley end up running their own heist together.

Lord, have mercy! I am falling behind so quickly with this project. Vacation/disruption of routine is not good for my writing! Okay, here we go:

Do you have a writing day? Or a writing hour? When do you get most of your writing done?

I say disruption of routine, but you know, I really don’t have much a routine in any aspect of my life. It’s still survival mode over here with these kids. So no, I don’t have a writing day or a writing hour or some days even a writing second! I write when inspiration hits.

When I first got back into writing, I had a stretch of time during the middle of the night that worked for me. But then I got tired and sleep was more important than dreams.

I write when there’s a deadline. Usually the last few days (or hours!) of a @troped-fanfic-challenge deadline!!

Lately, I don’t know what my writing “time” is at all. I’m sure it would help me to build a simple routine. Waking up early before the kids with coffee, during nap/play time, car pick-up lines, just 10-15mins here or there instead of mindless scrolling on the internet, but it’s so hard.

What is your favorite trope to write and/or read? And is there a difference between reading and writing the trope?

Definitely TIME LOOP AU! I love to read this trope, I love to write this trope, I love to WATCH this trope!

So I’ve only written it once, and it was pretty difficult, but I honestly love the trope so much. My favorite films/tv shows have time loops and time travel and I am very obsessed with the concepts of time.

It feels more fun to read/watch versus writing, but I’d like to try writing it again!

Structure as offense and characterization as defense, or the other way around. Is this something you think about? Do you have other metaphors when you think about your stories and how they work?

I love to world-build. It’s my favorite thing about writing. Creating spaces and characters and life that exists only in my brain.

I can’t explain it, but my brain feels like a Polly Pocket World when I’m thinking about story ideas. That’s why it’s so hard to put a three dimensional thing into something flat like a word doc.

I spent a lot of time as a child playing pretend with my Beanie Babies in my Barbie Dream House. And I think that translated into the way I write. There’s a few rooms in the houses I build, an opening looking in, and lots of blank space left for the reader to fill in. Or like Inception, I can take you into my dream world, but don’t look to closely at the details and try to talk to any of the projections.

I don’t know. I miss writing. I miss worldbuilding. I love these questions, but I have got to get back to my Fantasy Heist AU! Send me good writing vibes, friends!!!

"No, you are," she said for the other spoon, imitating her best Argentine accent. She pressed them together then, smiling proudly at her little show.
