WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 8 OF 9 Friday, March 17, 2023
"We must never confuse professionalism with expertise. Expertise is something to work for and to share; professionalism is—by definition—elitist and exclusive, sexist, racist, and classist." - Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English

QUOTE OF THE DAY Sunday, January 22, 2023
"Then, in the 1980's, came the paroxysm of downsizing, and the very nature of the corporation was thrown into doubt. In what began almost as a fad and quickly matured into an unshakable habit, companies were 'restructuring,' 'reengineering,' and generally cutting as many jobs as possible, white collar as well as blue . . . The New York Times captured the new corporate order succintly in 1987, reporting that it 'eschews loyalty to workers, products, corporate structures, businesses, factories, communities, even the nation. All such allegiances are viewed as expendable under the new rules. With survival at stake, only market leadership, strong profits and a high stock price can be allowed to matter'." - Barbara Ehrenreich, Bright-Sided: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America

I’ve been thinking a lot about the current literal Hollywood fanfare over the movement to combat sexual harassment and assault, and I’m reminded of the words of wisdom shared by Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw while speaking on a panel at the CUNY Graduate Center (along with Ai-jen Poo of the National Domestic Workers Alliance; Author Barbara Ehrenreich, Professor Frances Fox Piven, and moderated by Laura Flanders) titled, “Insurgency from Below: Activism in the Trump Era.” I have been a fan of Professor Crenshaw’s work since my freshman year in college when I bought the book, “Critical Race Theory: The Key Writings That Formed the Movement” (otherwise known as the Bible of race and law studies to lawyers/social justice advocates alike). I would skip classes at UC San Diego to hear her speak at UCLA where she taught classes on critical race studies, gender and diversity. She is the founder of the theory of intersectionality, which is currently being co-opted by the modern-day women’s rights movement as if it some new idea (😒). But Professor Crenshaw’s message hasn’t changed in the over 30+ years she’s been an attorney/scholar. And that is, we cannot begin to have discussions about class without talking about race and gender. Similarly, we can’t talk about gender without taking about race and class. And, in the same vein, we can’t talk about race without talking about gender and class...💁🏿‍♀️ . . . #kimberlecrenshaw #professoroflaw #intersectionality #feminism #ucla #cunygraduatecenter #columbiauniversity #founderofintersectionaltheory #intersectionalfeminism #criticalracetheory #raceandlaw #raceandgender #raceandequality #raceclassgender #genderandthelaw #aijenpoo #barbaraehrenreich #francesfoxpiven #socialjusticeactivism #resisttrump #fucktrump #impeachtrump (at The Graduate Center, CUNY)

Quote
It seems to me that the principle psychological factor in living is desire. Reason is purely intellectual (natch) but desire is so basic that it is never explained in any book about psychology I have read. The problem is: is the purpose, essence, of desire no desire (as it certainty seems to be) or is the purpose in the incompleted (unfilfilled?) desire? Is the purpose of life death - or is it in living? Desire seems to be an unsatisfied longing for its own absence, in fact it is.
