Today's door no. 3 takes us back to the 17th century. More precisely, to a trading vessel and to Maryland. Say hello to Dove
Tumblr media
More about her below:
Ark and Dove were the two ships used to establish the Maryland Colony. The Ark was a 400-ton cargo ship hired by Cecil Calvert to transport about 140 colonists and their equipment and supplies to Maryland. The Dove was a much smaller cargo ship with a capacity of 40 tonnes, purchased by Cecil Calvert and investors so that the colonists would have a ship of their own once the Ark sailed for England.
The two ships set sail from the Isle of Wight on 22 November 1633. Three days later, on 25 March, a storm arose in the Channel and the Dove was seen waving emergency lanterns at her masthead before disappearing into the storm. Those on board the Ark assumed that she had sunk in the storm. It wasn't until six weeks later that they learnt otherwise, when the Dove arrived in Barbados and joined the Ark.
The two ships reached Old Point Comfort on 24 February 1634, after a three-month voyage (including 66 days at sea). After spending a week at Old Point Comfort, they departed on 3 March and sailed up the Chesapeake to the Potomac River, where they landed on St. Clements Island. They spent the rest of March exploring and negotiating with the Indians for a place to settle. On 25 March, Father Andrew White held a thanksgiving mass to celebrate the acquisition of 30 square miles of land on the east bank of the St. Mary's River, and on 27 March the colonists left St. Clements to occupy the acquired land and name their settlement ‘St. Mary's’.
Ark returned to England at the end of May, leaving Dove behind to organise the transport of goods traded on the Atlantic coast. In the autumn of 1634, Dove was sent north to Boston to trade corn for stockfish and other goods. In August 1635, Dove was sent back to England with furs and timber to trade. Dove was never seen again, probably lost at sea.
The Dove in the picture is an older replica of a vessel from the late 17th century. The newer Dove is dated a few years earlier.

John Paul Jones
John Paul Jones (1747-1792) was a Scottish-born sailor who served in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). His raid on the English port town of Whitehaven in 1778 and his victory over the HMS Serapis the following year turned him into a war hero and led many to consider him the 'Father of the American Navy'.
Jones began his maritime career at the age of 13, serving aboard various merchant vessels and slave ships. After killing a mutinous sailor in the West Indies, he fled to the British colony of Virginia and joined the Continental Navy when the American Revolution broke out in 1775. He was given command of the USS Ranger, which he used to attack British commercial shipping in the Irish and North Seas. He raided Whitehaven, plotted to kidnap the Earl of Selkirk, and commanded the USS Bonhomme Richard in its grueling, 3-hour naval duel with HMS Serapis. These actions cemented Jones' reputation as one of the best naval commanders in US history. After the war, the Continental Navy was disbanded, leading Jones without prospects. He therefore entered the service of the Russian Empire in 1787 but left in disgrace two years later, after sexual assault allegations against him sparked an international scandal. He died in Paris on 18 July 1792 at the age of 45.
Early Life
On 6 July 1747, John Paul was born at the estate of Arbigland in the county of Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland – he would not add 'Jones' to his name until he came to America. His father was the head gardener at Arbigland and had seven children, five of whom would survive to adulthood. Though John Paul attended the nearby Kirkbean School, his true education occurred at Carsethorn, the local port. He would spend much of his free time there, breathing in the briny sea air, marveling at the comings and goings of ships, and talking with sailors, learning everything he could about life at sea. Paul could not long resist the call of the sea and, at the age of 13, he obtained an apprenticeship with John Younger, a Scottish merchant and shipowner operating out of the English port town of Whitehaven.
It was not long before John Paul embarked on his first voyage, sailing out of Whitehaven aboard one of Younger's vessels, the Friendship, as a ship's boy. The voyage took Paul across the Americas, stopping first at Barbados before sailing up to the British colony of Virginia. Here, Paul briefly reunited with his older brother, Thomas, who had previously emigrated to Fredericksburg, Virginia. In 1764, upon returning to Whitehaven, Paul was released from his apprenticeship early, because Younger's business had gone bankrupt. He found work aboard a slave ship and spent the next three years transporting human cargo from Guinea to Jamaica. In 1766, the 19-year-old Paul became first mate of the slave ship Two Friends, a lucrative position. However, he gradually grew disillusioned with the slave trade and became disgusted at his own role in perpetuating it. In 1768, he abandoned the Two Friends while it was docked in Kingston, Jamaica, and booked passage on a ship bound for Scotland.
Not long into the voyage, both the ship's captain and first mate died of yellow fever. Since there was no one else on board who knew how to navigate a ship, Paul took charge and guided the vessel safely to Scotland. The ship's grateful owners rewarded Paul with ten percent of the vessel's cargo. Impressed with his nautical skills, they also offered him the captaincy of a merchant brig named John. Paul accepted and captained two voyages to the West Indies. It was during his second voyage, in 1770, that Paul had the ship's carpenter flogged with cat-o'-nine-tails as punishment for neglect of duty. The carpenter died at sea several weeks later. When the John returned to port, Paul was arrested and imprisoned at Kirkcudbright Tolbooth, charged by the dead man's father of having caused his death. Paul maintained that the carpenter's death had been unrelated to the flogging, that it had instead been caused by yellow fever. After producing several witnesses to substantiate this claim, Paul was acquitted, although the incident left a dark stain on his reputation.
In 1772, Paul once again sailed into the West Indies, this time captaining a merchant vessel called Betsy. Toward the end of the voyage, in 1773, the Betsy arrived at Tobago, where several sailors decided to stage a mutiny. Paul responded to the mutineers' demands by running the ringleader through with his sword, killing him. Although Paul would always claim that he had acted out of self-defense, he knew that the public opinion in Tobago would be against him, since the man he had killed had been a local. To evade a trial, he fled to mainland North America, where he added 'Jones' to his name to help conceal his identity. After the death of his brother William, he went to Fredericksburg, Virginia, to settle his affairs and decided to live there himself.

The survival story of the Patawomeck Tribe of Virginia has been remembered within the tribe for generations, but the massacre of Patawomeck men and the enslavement of women and children by land hungry colonists in 1666 has been mostly unknown outside of the tribe until now. Author Lora Chilton, a member of the tribe through the lineage of her father, has created this powerful fictional retelling of the survival of the tribe through the lives of three women.
1666: After the Massacre is the imagined story of the indigenous Patawomeck women who lived through the decimation of their tribe in the summer of 1666. Told in first person point of view, this historical novel is the harrowing account of the Patawomeck women who were sold and transported to Barbados via slave ship. The women are separated and bought by different sugar plantations, and their experiences as slaves diverge as they encounter the decadence and clashing cultures of the Anglican, Quaker, Jewish and African populations living in sugar rich "Little England" in the 1660's. The book explores the Patawomeck customs around food, family and rites of passage that defined daily life before the tribe was condemned to "utter destruction" by vote of the Virginia General Assembly. The desire to return to the land they call home fuels the women as they bravely plot their escape from Barbados. With determination and guile, Ah'SaWei WaTaPaAnTam (Golden Fawn) and NePa'WeXo (Shining Moon) are able to board separate ships and make their way back to Virginia to be reunited with the remnant of the tribe that remained. It is because of these women that the tribe is in existence to this day. This work of historical fiction is based on oral tradition, written colonial records and extensive research by the author, including study of the language. The book uses indigenous names for the characters and some of the Patawomeck language to honor the culture and heritage that was erased when European colonization of the Americans began in the 16th century. The book includes a glossary for readers unfamiliar with the language and names.

Many of the recent “wildcat” strikes in Barbados have been triggered by workers’ frustrations over a lack of communication by management. Labour minister Colin Jordan made this assertion while speaking on Friday’s Down to Brass Tacks radio programme which discussed the current industrial relations environment which has seen a number of work stoppages in recent weeks in both the private and public sectors. This week, employees walked off their jobs at Duty Free Barbados, the United Commercial Autoworks Limited and the School Meals Department and these followed similar action at the Ministry of Education, the Transport Board and the Sanitation Service Authority. Suggesting that many of these incidents are a result of issues which have been simmering for a long time, Jordan said that such action by workers could have been avoided if management was more proactive. “We still have some ways to go with regards to worker/management relations. What we see in industrial relations is reflective of what we see with wider society - the inability of people to just sit down, be civil and talk through issues. Persons who consider themselves to be in leadership have to be concerned and considerate enough to engage with those who may be considered to be lower-level and talk through issues. “Persons do not like to feel as though the issues they have raised are not being attended to and sometimes the matter is being attended to, but those who are being impacted are not aware. Again, this comes down to communication,” Jordan said. The minister said the Labour Department has been involved in the resolution of many of the recent cases of industrial action, including Duty Free Barbados and the Transport Board. Can you tell us anything more about John Hartnell's time on the Voltage?
Hell yeah, I can! I have some pictures from the log books I can post later, too. I legit sat for H O U R S reading tiny handwriting from the master’s logs. Most of the logs were lists of chores, punishments, notes on the weather, and any major events. John’s time on the Volage can be divided pretty neatly in half, between the ship’s North American tour, and its Irish Sea patrol, all between 1841-45.
The North American part was probably pretty exciting for him, considering that he’d been a shoemaker since he was thirteen years old. Compared to what his brother had been up to on the Volage (the Aden Expedition, Battle of Chuenpi, etc.), it focused less on military ventures and more on transportation and patrol. The first major thing it did was in December of 1841, when it accompanied the HMS Warspite and HMS Thalia in taking the King of Prussia, Frederick William IV to England to attend the christening of the Prince of Wales. After that, it scurried over to Plymouth to get new fittings, and then took off for the Caribbean.
A lot happened in the Caribbean, and reading through the log books (always written in very non-emotional language, but still entertaining) paints a very eclectic picture of their activities. The Volage went to Jamaica first, awaiting orders until they were ordered to go to Saint Martha to pick up... $800,000 in gold. Legit, that sat on the Volage for two months until they dropped it off in Port Royal. By then, half the crew was incredibly ill with a mix of diseases including what might have been dysentery. Amazingly, for all of John’s terrible luck, he doesn’t appear on the sick list, even as one of the lieutenant’s eventually died as well as the clerk.
They scurried back and forth across the Caribbean from January of 1842 until they departed for Halifax, Nova Scotia later that summer. (Land of @theiceandbones!) In all honesty, the Volage didn’t get up to much during it’s time in Halifax. They didn’t necessarily have a mission, but it does make for some really entertaining reading! There was a lot of shore leave, for instance. Here are some of the notes I wrote on my read-through between the Caribbean and Halifax (which is from ADM 54/312):
Mondays and Fridays are mandatory clothes-washing days.
8th of July 1842 - “Punished Michael Logan with 48 [!] lashes for Disobedience of Orders and Insolence”
12th of July 1842, 6pm - “Committed to the deep the Body of Samuel Marvin (AB) Deceased.” / “Departed this life William Baillie (boy) - Buried at sea on the 13th.”
18th of July 1842, 10:50 pm - “Heard the report of several Guns from the North” [in Halifax]
20th of July 1842 - Halifax Citadel visit and the burial of Robert Webb (boy), Samuel Gibbon, John Barnes, and Samuel Brummage (carpenter’s mate) on shore
Godden reports that several warm nights, sailors were permitted to use their hammocks and sleep on the beach! (I put a smiley face next to my note here!)
Most of their Halifax mooring was spent cleaning. Lots of repainting, holystoning, repairing, etc.
Multiple discharges for “uselessness” and “disgrace”.
The latter note is really interesting, considering that none other than Charles Dickens visited Halifax that same year, and made note of sailors making total idiots out of themselves on oysters and champagne. Indeed, there are plenty of punishments recorded for that summer for drunkenness, insubordination, and desertion, again sometimes up to 48 lashes. (I’ll post a picture of the log just to confirm that.) On a high note, John Hartnell wasn’t punished once! And believe me, I looked!
They did have to have some repair work done to fix a leak in October before scurrying back down south with the “Squadron”. Godden makes some pretty boring notes about looking at the United States coast (as in essentially saying, “Yep, there it is!”) before they hang tight to the coast of Mexico.
The Volage appears to have been outfitted for doing survey work, which is part of what they did for the next few months. Between that, mooring for absolutely nothing, and hanging out with slave ship hunters (I like to think they high-fived the HMS Racer at some point) their zig-zag order of ports of call are:
Barbados > Puerto Rico > Grenada > St. Vincent > Jamaica > St. Lucie > Antigua > Jamaica (long-term Port Royal mooring) > Haiti
By early 1843, the Volage was headed back home. They docked in Plymouth for a time before getting their next orders for the Admiralty for the apparently much-maligned Irish Sea duty. At this point, Captain William Dickson had a temporary replacement for the deceased Lt. Davey, but eventually, that lieutenant had to leave as well. Captain Dickson did get a note from the Admiralty that he was to get his replacement at the Cove of Cork, and according to the sudden burst of tiny handwriting at the bottom of the page on Tuesday, August 29th, 1843, Captain Dickson totally forgot about that. Literally, the note for the day is kind of falling off the page from squeezing it in, but reads: “Read the Commission of Lieut J Irving”.
Because Lieutenant John Irving hopped on board as a new replacement, thus using those sweet, sweet letters of his to describe the next few months. He was absolutely meticulous about dating his letters, and having them on hand in his memoir made it easy to line up with Godden’s notes in the master’s log, confirming everything between the two of them. This time, Irish patrol got kind of exciting.
First, here’s Irving talking about joining the Volage, saying much nicer things about Capt. Dickson considering the captain was probably going, “Oh shit right I forgot we were doing this.”
“To my great joy I found the ‘Volage’ at anchor here. I was afraid she might have gone somewhere else. I went on board direct from the steamer, and was introduced to Sir William Dickson, the Captain; rigged myself in a blue coat and a pair of epaulettes; the hands were turned up, and the Captain read my commission appointing me lieutenant of the ship to the ship’s company. There are three of us. I am the second in seniority. Our mess consists of seven--viz., three lieutenants, one master, surgeon, a lieutenant of marines. They are all very good fellows. I was three years messmate of one of them in a former ship, so am comfortable in that respect.”
Irving noted that the officers were frequently invited to parties in Cork (”I could be at parties every day if I liked;”), and Godden does say that the rest of the crew were given shore leave fairly frequently, even though they didn’t have enough officers to allow them to leave as often.
For the next four months, the Volage remained at Cork, doing patrol with several other man-of-war’s. On land, there were frequent clashes between the Protestants and the Catholics, but more importantly, there were the Repealers following Daniel O’Connell’s urging to repeal the Acts of the Union and re-establish the independent Kingdom of Ireland. Between Irving and Godden, the image of this time from the perspective of the Volage is one of a lot of bloody rumors and high tension (a Protestant curate was killed, houses were being burned down). However, O’Connell’s followers were very civil to the sailors and actually invited some of the Volage officers to visit their homes. Irving called their hospitality “quite Highland”.
The Volage was temporarily relieved of its patrol in December, and returned to Plymouth by January of 1844 for refitting and repair work after shearing off part of her keel. Godden and Irving both noted that sailors and officers were boarded on a hulk, or a non-sailing ship. Godden also noted that several sailors were permitted leave to go visiting nearby. (John Hartnell did have family in Plymouth, and Thomas Hartnell may have been visiting the area at the same time, if a pet theory of mine holds up.)
They were back in the Cove of Cork by February, with the Volage now as the flagship. During a period between February and June, the Volage frequently made trips between Cork and the town of Bantry, after further pro-Repealer agitation began to raise tensions once more. Godden’s log doesn’t say much on the subject aside from weather reports and notes on officers leaving the ship to attend parties, major gatherings in town (there’s a really interesting bit from Irving on scaring the bejeezus out of a group of paraders and stealing the Waterford city flag), and switching out officers. However, the tensions once again didn’t amount to much more than far-off reports of violence and a few observations of pissed-off “pisantry”. The Volage did return to Plymouth for Christmas before returning for a short turn in Cork, and then being paid off completely. The log for that topic shows that John Hartnell was paid off on February 1st, 1845.
As far as what life would have been like for John Hartnell on the Volage, it’s hard to say for sure since, once again, Godden’s logs are impersonal. However, he was responsible for recording all punishments, injuries, illnesses, and deaths, of which there was no lack. He also kept meticulous note of what chores were to be done on particular days, as well as drills. I noticed there was a lot of repetition in the chore schedule, and there was a slight uptick in sailors suddenly taking ill with “unknown” illnesses about two and a half years in, especially on days that had chores requiring a little more elbow grease.
But I think, as I said, this would have been very exciting for someone like John. After all, he voluntarily signed up for the Erebus four months after signing off on the Volage. Unfortunately, we don’t have any letters to or from him that might hint to how he felt during this time, so we have to take it from his actions rather than his words. I like to think he enjoyed himself.

The U.S.S. Cyclops
During World War I, the U.S.S. Cyclops served along the eastern coast of the United States until January 9, 1918. At that time, she was assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service. The Cyclops was scheduled to sail to Brazil to refuel British ships in the south Atlantic. She set out from Rio de Janeiro on February 16 and after a brief stop in Barbados from March 3 to 4, was never seen or heard from again. All 306 passengers and crew were gone without a trace.
About the time the search for the Cyclops was called off, a distressing telegram was received by the State Department from Livingston. It stated that Captain Worley was referred to as the damned Dutchman and apparently was disliked by other officers. There were rumors about men being confined and one was even said to have been executed. Livingston wrote that there were numerous Germanic names.
The Office of Naval Intelligence investigations revealed that Captain Worley was born Johan Frederick Wichmann in Germany in 1862, and he had arrived in America by jumping ship in San Francisco in 1878. By 1898, he had changed his name to Worley. During this time, he qualified for the position of ship’s master and had commanded several civilian merchant ships.
The investigators discovered Worley berated and swore at officers and men for minor offenses, sometimes becoming violent. There were allegations that he was pro-German and might have conspired with the enemy. His closest friends and associates were either German or Americans of German descent. One of the passengers on the final voyage was Alfred Louis Moreau Gottschalk, the consul-general in Rio de Janeiro, who was pro-German. This led to the theory that Worley handed the ship over to the Germans. After the war ended, German records were searched and this theory was debunked.
The disappearance of the Cyclops is often credited to the Bermuda Triangle, which is an imaginary line from Miami, Florida to Bermuda to San Juan, Puerto Rico. It’s considered one of the earliest documented incidents involving the disappearance of a US ship. Many people cite the fact that the vessel disappeared without sending a distress signal as evidence it was lost in the Bermuda Triangle. Ship-board communication was in its infancy in 1918 and it wasn’t unusual for a fast-sinking vessel to have little or no time to make a distress call.
It’s alleged that, in 1968, a Navy diver reported the discovery of the wreckage of an old ship off of the Norfolk, Virginia coast in about three hundred feet of water. He said it looked like the bridge was on stilts. When he saw a picture of the Cyclops, he was convinced this was the ship wreckage he had seen on the sea bottom. The location would have been in the area where the violent storm of 1918, occurred. Further expeditions to the site failed to find the wreckage. The disappearance of the Cyclops remains an enigma of the ocean.

On September 3rd 1650, Cromwell defeated the Scots at the Battle of Dunbar.
This is a longer post than I would normally post but I think it is important to understand what happened after Dunbar.
On paper this should have been an easy win for the Scots, but battles are not fought on paper or there would have been different results at Stirling Brig and Bannockburn, where the English easily outnumbered the Scots, so what went wrong? The religious zealots thought they could fight a war with an army of religious zealots. We had the beating of Cromwell here, after had attempted to take Edinburgh he hightailed to Dunbar.
You might wonder how the Scots ended up fighting Cromwell's Army, in the previous decade they had been allies in their war against  King Charles I but when the English decided to execute him that was a different matter. Charles I had been born in Dunfermline and was still technically a Scot. This was too much for national pride in the monarchy. Charles II was instantly proclaimed king in Scotland and Cromwell felt himself left with no option but to invade.
Never had there been so much infighting amongst Scots, we had an able general under David Leslie but he wasn't really allowed to lead. The religious bampots at the top saw this war as amounting to a presbyterian 'jihad' and started to purge the army on the grounds that only the godly were good enough to fight Cromwell's army of puritan 'saints'. The godly started to dominate the army councils too. War by religious committee - the outlook was not good. On 3 September 1650 Cromwell took apart his bickering enemies. Thousands of Scots perished, either on the field of Dunbar or afterwards as prisoners, or were transported to the colonies or pressed into English service.
It left Cromwell with a problem, 10,000 prisoners, half of them were sick, wounded or starving, sending trumpets round Scotland to tell people that they could come to the Battlefield and pick up their sick and wounded, Leslie had waged a scorched earth war, Cromwell's own men were on meagre rations themselves. The only way to deal with the problem, if you discounted mass slaughter, was to march the Scottish Soldiers to where they might be covered, secured and fed. Durham Cathedral was empty and the march of 100 miles set off first, with Cromwell’s own hungry and marched out (exhausted) troops, to Berwick upon Tweed and then to Durham, stopping at Wooler and Newcastle. The tale of this being a death march is just that.
Half starved, poorly clad many perished enroute to Durham, it should be understood that the land between Dunbar and Berwick had been completely cleared of anything that Cromwell’s army could subsist on, including grazing. So between Dunbar and Berwick it is thought they would have had nothing at all to eat.  At Morpeth they were held in a field full of cabbages and they ate the whole crop raw. Nowadays starvation is more understood and the men would have suffered what they now call Refeeding Syndrome causing respiratory failure, heart failure, confusion, constipation, and diarrhoea. After five days without food the condition is critical; after ten days it is dangerous and (Oh Yes) that is in modern hospital conditions. The men didn’t die by the side of the road because of the march. They died because the thing they wanted most of all killed them – food!
The Prisoners were counted upon arrival at Durham Cathedral, the number was 3,000, so around 2,000 either died or escaped between Dunbar and Durham. More likely they died on the side of the road. The remainder of the prisoners were held in Durham Cathedral and were supplied with bread and milk and given straw to sleep on, the deaths continued due to illness, starvation and poor sanitation, the main cause of death is said to have been through dysentery, around 2,000 men died, although numbers vary.
It’s not clear how long the surviving prisoners were held, but historical accounts say some were ordered to work in the salt-pan, linen and coal mining industries or as general labourers in North East England IIt is thought that around 500 were sent to Ireland to serve in the Parliamentarian army with others shipped to France, Barbados or Virginia. Some of the sick who had survived were forced to drain the Fens in Norfolk.
About 150 prisoners boarded ships for the New England region of America where they were sold for £20 to £30 each to work in sawmills or ironworks as indentured servants. They were able to gain their freedom if they saved enough to redeem their sale price or if they worked the full term of their indenture and a number went on to become successful farmers in Maine.
ow in previous posts, most recently with William Wallace's execution, I have noted that the English were meticulous bookkeepers, and this is the case with the aftermath of Dunbar, letters are available to read sent between Cromwell and his man in the North of England   Arthur Haselrig. What can be noted in the English records of all this, is that not once, NOT ONCE, did the Scottish Government, that is The Covenanters who had controlled Scotland since 1639, enquire about the men after Dunbar, their fate was left entirely in the hands of Cromwell's New Model Army.
More recently, in the remains of some of those that died at Durham were discovered in two graves. An estimated 1,700 prisoners died and were buried in Durham; it is possible that further mass graves exist, perhaps under what are now university buildings. The human remains, all men and mainly aged 13 to 25, were discovered in November 2013 during building work for a new cafe. The men were reburied in May 2018 in a ceremony attended by hundreds of people, a headstone was erected designed in the tradition of the 17th Century. The wording on the stone was chosen following extensive consultation and reads:
‘Here lie the remains of those Scottish soldiers from the Battle of Dunbar who died in Durham 1650-51, were excavated from Palace Green Library in 2013, and were reburied here on 18 May 2018’.
There is also a memorial plaque at Durham University, near the Cathedral. The plaque is mounted on stone quarried from the site of the Battle of Dunbar and has been placed in the library's cafe courtyard where they grave was unearthed.
