Since it’s Crop Over season in Barbados, now’s a good time for newbies to learn Carnival wining etiquette. (video by Dawnisha Best)
What is Crop Over? Once called “Harvest Home”, the origin of the festival can be traced back to the late 17th century when Barbados was the world’s dominant sugar producer. It began as a way for the enslaved Africans to celebrate the end of the sugar cane harvest.
After World War 2, the sugar industry and, consequently, the festival declined. However, the festival was revived in 1974 and evolved into a vibrant three-month celebration of Bajan culture and history that continues today. The finale of Crop Over is Grand Kadooment, which features an impressive masquerade parade.
As Bajans say, “Crop Over, it sweet fuh days!”
Crop Over Dates:
Crop Over season: May to August
Official Crop Over season: July to August
Grand Kadooment Day: every first Monday in August
